Thursday, March 21: Frankenshred, “Dogs of War”

After two records of instrumental mayhem, Frankenshred recruited a vocalist for Cauldron of Evil- two actually, since the album was recorded with two different lineups.  But that didn’t matter as far as the sound, since “Dogs of War” continued Dr. Frankenshred’s mission to riff and solo like the love child of Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Yngwie Malmsteen and Jeff Waters.  The tune was actually a bit more dynamic than the above might suggest: the guitars were blindingly fast, but there was also a thrash chug and some tempo changes to keep things from getting too monotonous.  But with a name like Frankenshred, and a guitarist calling himself Dr. Frankenshred, there was no question as to what was in store, and on that front, “Dogs of War” did not disappoint.

[Unbezahlte Werbung] Richmond, Virginia’s HUMUNGUS mix it up between traditional Metal and Thrash with shred parts here and there and a skilled vocalist named Jack Bauer (go to hell Nina... sic). The band formed in 2010 and ‘Balls’ is their second output to date. The bands lyrics mostly deal with partying, no wonder their first EP was named ‘Drinkin’ a Beer’. HUMUNGUS is fun for the whole family, never too serious or too dangerous. The whole material is up-tempo like their label mates FRANKENSHRED but HUMUNGUS’ music is straight forward never meandering or overdoing the shredding parts and Bauer does a nice job on the microphone. Although this output is a nice one Peyton Gregory’s statement that HUMUNGUS will change history is highly exaggerated. Never heard of FRANKENSHRED? Then it is about time you will. Formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1996 they originally intended as an instrumental band but then they added a singer for the fourth output in 2004, although there is enough shredding time left to fill for Johnny Frankenshred. Vocalist Roland Ledesma gives the shred fest the needed extra cheese (think MANOWAR meets MALMSTEEN style-wise). Speaking of vocals, Ledesma is often the weak link when it comes to the songs, the overall up-tempo compositions are often self-serving (the shredding is overdone) and if these guys would try to compensate for this flaw they would need a singer that fits better into the rather complex structures but unfortunately Ledesma cannot keep up with Johnny Frankenshred (not for lack of trying). Sorry to say this but FRANKENSHRED is not my cup of tea, maybe many others love this but it’s a no from this head-banger.
