Tien dagen Zappa - 6/10 - Frank Zappa: Zoot Allures
Midden jaren ’70 had Zappa wat problemen met zijn platenmaatschappij. Enkele composities die bedoeld waren voor “Zoot Allures” werden niet weerhouden en het album werd uiteindelijk bij Warner Bros. uitgebracht. Later zouden de niet weerhouden songs alsnog worden uitgebracht (o.a. op “Sleep Dirt”). Voor “Zoot Allures” waren de meeste Mothers terug paraat. Drummer Terry Bozzio was een nieuwe kracht en zou later nog een belangrijke rol vervullen in de Zappa-bands. Opmerkelijk is ook dat Captain Beefheart nog eens als gast te horen is in enkele nummers. Hoogtepunten zijn o.a. “Wind Up Workin’ in a Gas Station”, “The Torture Never Stops” (cf. clipje) en “Disco Boy”.

Song Review: Frank Zappa - “Wind up Workin' in a Gas Station” (Live, Nov. 22, 1975)
Weird choice for a lead single.
With wobbly sound and poorly mic’d drums, the Nov. 22, 1975, live version of “Wind up Workin' in a Gas Station” finds Frank Zappa and band basically playing a demo on stage.
Instrumental and still coming together, it’s loose and not terribly intriguing, save for a short, typically outstanding, FZ guitar solo in the middle passages.
The track previews the Oct. 14 release of the full concert as Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana. It can’t possibly be the best music from the show. If, however, it somehow is, the album will be a hard pass.
Grade card: Frank Zappa - “Wind up Workin' in a Gas Station” (Live, Nov. 22, 1975) - C+
