Day 1 BLUESFEST 2015
Bluesfest 2015 – Day 1
Awesome turning up at Bluesfest yesterday afternoon at Media HQ with the soulful voice of Emma Donovan onstage with Diesel and Dub Collective powering through the breeze from the nearby Mojo Stage... a very soothing and grounding introduction to the vibe of this years Bluesfest, as The Moon revealed itself from behind the clouds overhead. Diesel and Dub, (featuring Radical Son, Emma Donovan, Frank Yamma, Alex Lloyd, Declan Kelly, Pat Powell and Tony Hughes) play everyday across an array of different stages except Saturday. Great to see the support of the STOP The Forced Closure of Aboriginal Communities movement on their stage shirts too. Inspirational and Powerful!!!
A great Aboriginal presence featured on the Mojo Stage kicking off with the annual Arakwal Welcome to Country, followed by Frank Yamma and of course Diesel and Dub. Considering the uncertainty of Boomerang Festival’s future (and the loss of The Indig Stage at Bluesfest), this gesture was at the same time heartfelt and powerful.
Out of the other acts I grazed on (Boy and Bear, Hozier, Augie March, Playing for Change, Jurassic 5, Playing for Change and SOJA), whilst all inspiring, it was definitely the artists on the Jambalaya Stage that touched my Spirit and captured my attention last night.
Playing for Change, a collective of souls from all over The Globe (Netherlands, South Africa, Israel, Congo, Italy, Cuba, USA and Japan) entertained the energetic crowd with masterful and uplifting renditions of soul, reggae and civil rights classics. PLAYING FOR CHANGE supports music schools and programs that are created and operated by the local community and then purposefully connect those communities around the world. Returning to Bluesfest for their third time, Playing for Change certainly connected all those enjoying the vibe last night. A definite must see for those wanting to groove and sing a long en masse. You can catch Playing for Change every day on various stages.
An unexpected highlight for me on the first night was Bluesfest virgins, SOJA. Collaborators with Michael Franti, and stage fellows of the likes of Dave Matthews Band and Damien ‘Jr Gong’ Marley, these guys hit the punters with the kind of pure raw energy that few can equal. Socially conscious in lyric, the group traversed almost every possible rhythm on the planet with complete ease, even throwing in some Lovers Rock and a touch of Crowded House too!!! Displaying superb vocals and killer percussion shared throughout the band, SOJA are one act you don’t want to miss out on seeing. See them today and also Monday (when they team up again with Michael Franti and his Soul Shine Yoga and Acoustic Jam).

Midnight Oil Facebook Live stream Press release
1980’s Australian rock band Midnight Oil announced on Friday the 17th of February their first world tour in over two decades. The world tour called the Great Circle 2017 was announced in true rock star style on the back of large a wooden passenger boat on the Sydney Harbour. With their backs facing the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House, camera men and reporters faced the band on the upper deck platform and asked detailed questions about their up and coming tour and CD release.
This tour, which is due to start in mid April, will kick off at a smaller intimate local pub (with details to be announced later) then continue their live shows around the world at over 30 locations including Sao Paulo, LA, London and Paris. They will be playing at festivals with other large international acts like Arcade fire, Sting, and the Pixies to name a few. They return home to play 18 Australia concerts through out the country with Great Australian bands like John Butler Trio, Adilita, Birds Of Tokyo, The Living End, Something for Kate, Spiderbait, Urthboy and Frank Yamma.
The press release was broadcasted on television stations ABC, Seven, Nine and Ten with Go Live on board (No pun intended) to Live stream on Facebook’s live streaming platform Facebook live stream. The benefit of hosting the conference on Facebook live was that MNO fans on social media were present to receive the good news Live of the up and coming tour and interact and asked the band questions about what they have been doing personally since the last tour.
For this Facebook streaming event, we used a three-camera set up, wide, tight and a camera clamped to an upper deck ladder to get the stunning Harbour Views. These feeds were sent to back to our switcher to be mixed with Audio, Watermarks and holding slides to give notice of when the Facebook streaming will commence. During the Facebook live streaming event it gained 40,000 views and over 200 shares. Presently this video has over 271,000 views and 1600 shares, which is continuously increasing.
If you are interested hosting a Facebook streaming event. Give us call to enquire about what we can do for you.

Midnight Oil Plot 'Great Circle' 2017 World Tour
Midnight Oil Plot 'Great Circle' 2017 World Tour
Midnight Oil will grind the diesel and the dust on their first world tour in more than two decades.
The Aussie rock legends set pulses racing with an announcement last year of a comeback and the promise of “some gigs in Australia and overseas during 2017.” That original statement, it turns out, was wildly underplaying their true plans.
The ARIA Hall of Famers on Friday unveiled their 50-date-plus Great Circle 2017 world tour, and announced three box sets including a collection called The Overflow Tank which is stuffed with more than 14 hours of previously unreleased and rare works.
The classic line-up of Peter Garrett (vocals), Rob Hirst (drums), Martin Rotsey (guitar), Jim Moginie (guitar, keys), and Bones Hillman (bass) will circle the globe over six months, starting and ending where it all began with gigs in Sydney (a secret pub show will launch the trek).
Through the warmer months, the expedition will stop for multiple dates in the Americas and Europe, playing iconic venues such as Sao Paulo’s Espaço das Americas and the Wiltern in L.A., London’s Hammersmith Apollo and the Olympia in Paris. The voyage will climax with an 18-date homecoming run in October and November, and including shows in several regional centers; Michael Gudinski’s Frontier Touring will produce the Australia leg.

— Midnight Oil (@midnightoilband) February 16, 2017
These will be the Oils’ only shows since they disbanded in 2002, save for a pair of stadium benefit concerts, “Waveaid” at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2005 and “Sound Relief” at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2009 (and their respective small warmup gigs). They’ve not embarked on a major outing since the early 1990s.
A reunion became a fantasy when Peter Garrett walked from the band 15 years ago to embark on a career in federal politics. Though he never quite shut the door on rock ‘n’ roll. When he announced his retirement prior to the general elections of 2013, the Oils’ door swung wide open.
“I went off and did something else for 10 years,” Garrett quipped during a press conference Friday on Sydney Harbour. The band, he added, has “never felt better, fresher, nastier, sweeter and more energetic.”
After forming in 1972, Midnight Oil went on to become one of Australia’s most popular bands – and certainly its most politically-charged. Through song, the group pushed for indigenous rights, and they took an anti-war stance. The 1987 set Diesel and Dust came in at No. 1 in the 100 Best Australian Albums, a compendium of homegrown recordings published in 2010. The group was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006.
The fire of activism still burns in the group, and the shaky political climate should only add fuel. “We’re part of the pushback and we are not alone,” drummer Rob Hirst said at the media gathering to announce the tour. “There’s a whole bunch of people here, and throughout Europe and other places that we’re touring, who feel the same way.”
Details on Midnight Oil’s boxsets and a first ever complete vinyl collection can be found at midnightoil.com/store. Click here for full international dates.

Day 1—Byron Bay Bluesfest
Tumblr media
I’m just waking up after my first full day in Byron Bay, and let me tell you—it was extraordinary! Here’s how the day went down…
After making my way into the city center from Suffolk Park (and having the most amazing shakshuka eggs with haloumi, preserved lemons, and avocado at this café called Ginger Pig), I hopped a shuttle to the festival grounds, Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm. It drizzled off and on throughout the earlier part of the morning; the weather here reminds me of New Orleans in the summer—hot, humid, intermittent rain showers and blazing sun. My hair loves it! Anyway, I arrived at the festival grounds and immediately learned that I was at the wrong gate to pick up my press pass. The shuttle dropped us at the south gate, and I had to pick up at the north gate. It was a long walk but beautiful; the area is surrounded by all kinds of flora and fauna, most of which I cannot identify but am captivated by, none the less. And with it being a tea tree farm, the air smells clean and fresh. Supposedly there are also koalas on the grounds, but so far, no sightings.
After finally procuring my credentials and getting set up in the media tent, I decided to go for a stroll to familiarize myself with the layout of the festival. There are five stages, all covered (which is nice, especially since rain is forecast throughout the week), all spread out amongst the vendors and port-o-potties. Crews were setting up most of the stages at this point, with a few performing preliminary sound checks.
Since I had some time before the first acts began, I thought it would be a good idea to check out the vendors. With so many dope options to choose from, offering everything from handcrafted jewelry to funky hats and even knickers (fancy underwear—I kid you not), I made a mental note of the items that caught my eye and promised myself to revisit them on the last day of the festival. Souvenir shopping is go (on Monday)! The food offerings were just as enticing; there is something about festivals and the aroma of grilled meat on a stick, right?! Again, way too many options to choose from, and too much opportunity to do too much too soon. But since I’m in Australia, I settled on a Thai chicken pie. Y’all. It changed my life. The pie was piping hot, and for whatever reason it didn’t occur to me to grab a fork as I headed to my table, so I ate this thing like a wild woman! I wish I’d taken a photo before, because I massacred that poor little led yummy thing. It didn’t stand a chance. The lemongrass flavor that burst through with each bite, the huge chunks of chicken, the buttery, tender, flaky dough…Have mercy. I washed it down with a ginger elixir—a heavy dose of fresh ginger, honey, and rain water. Rain water? Word.
At long last, it was time for the opening ceremony and performances. I missed the ceremony (I  was in the media tent charging my devices, of course), so the first performance I caught was Frank Yamma. An Indigenous Australian singer, songwriter, and musician, Yamma’s soulful voice and space acoustic guitar stopped me in my tracks. I’d never heard of him before, but I’m definitely a fan now. This is one of the best things about music festivals—you have the opportunity to experience artists you’ve never heard, performing live. It’s as much about discovery as it is about rockin’ out to your favorites!
Diesel N Dub, a supergroup of sorts led by Declan Kelly, was up next, performing reggae versions of Midnight Oil classics (Midnight Oil is renowned in Australia and around the world for their unending commitment to social issues and using their platform to educate and empower. They’re best known stateside for their 1987 hit, “Beds Are Burning,” which got major play on MTV). Diesel N Dub’s aim is to bring awareness to Indigenous literacy efforts and to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. With guest vocalists like Emma Donovan (another artist whose work I can’t wait to get into) and Radical Son, the band pushed through several of Midnight Oil’s most beloved songs and got the crowd moving.
On my list of must-sees for the first night of performances was Chris Robinson Brotherhood. Robinson, former front man for the Black Crowes, led his musicians through a slightly subdued southern rock set. Having seen Robinson with the Black Crowes in 2011, I may have been expecting the same level of energy from this new group. They sounded fantastic, but it was definitely a different vibe.
After getting a little taste of CRB, I wandered around in search of dinner. I found BBQ chicken wings, and they were divine. Does the “we can’t eat chicken in public” rule apply outside the US? Hmmm…
Since this is, after all, a blues festival, I was elated to find that it wasn’t so in name only. The Music Maker Blues Revue gave me life, bringing that good Delta blues to Australia by way of Albert White, George Stancell, and Super Chikan. It was the closest thing to a juke joint I’ve ever experienced. All I needed was some whiskey.
There were still a handful of artists I wanted to see, but #jetlag. Thankfully, they’re performing throughout the week, so I won’t miss them! But I had to head back after a long day, get a good night’s rest, and get ready to rock Day 2.
Have a look at this video clip from Day 1!

Stay tuned!
