Favorite thing about them: His fundamental goodness and likability. He's warm, caring, and devoted, first as a friend and ultimately as a husband and father too, and he's lively, fun-loving, artistic, and enjoyable to be with. It's no wonder that he's been the first literary crush of countless young girls over the years. Personally, I also find his flaws and mistakes relatable and his coming-of-age arc engaging. I'm sure other readers, both male and female, would feel the same way if they would stop reducing him to "the dreamy boy next door."

Least favorite thing about them: His immaturity throughout so much of the story: the way he pranks Meg with fake love letters, his unwillingness to go to college and the trouble he constantly gets into while there, his moments of casual boyish sexism regarding girls who aren't the Marches, and of course, his passionate yet childish marriage proposal to Jo and his "you'll be sorry" attitude and months of sulking after she refuses. Fortunately, he matures by the end.

Three things I have in common with them:

*I'm fun-loving.

*I can be overemotional and lazy.

*I love music.

Three things I don't have in common with them:

*I'm not good at composing music – I've tried, but I don't just lack genius, I lack talent.

*I don't play pranks.

Random headcanon: Mr. Laurence's late granddaughter was Laurie's sister, not a cousin. She was his older sister, who died only a few years after they came to live with their grandfather, and Laurie was too little at the time to remember her very well anymore. But having lost her is partly why he latches on to the March girls as surrogate sisters, just like the loss of his parents makes him latch on to Marmee as a surrogate mother.

Unpopular opinion: He's just as dimensional and well-developed a character as the March sisters and he goes through just as much personal growth as they do. To reduce him to his role as a love interest and to treat him as just a prize for the most "deserving" March sister to win does an enormous disservice both to the sisters and to him.

Song I associate with them: His introductory song from the 2005 musical, "Take a Chance on Me" (not to be confused with the ABBA song of the same name).

Review: I have always loved Foley's fictional writing, it's really some of the best out there. But it took me this long to read his memoir of his time with Tiger Recon and his long career in the army. Let me just say this, Foley is very good at telling a story, crafting the narrative, and giving all the details to set the scene. He's an excellent writer, and the information he shares really puts you in the scene, each step of the way. Whether it's his time in Germany repairing radios and radars or with Tiger Force, he's not shy about letting the readers know just how far out of his element he was, and how shocked he was to actually succeed. He always feels like everyone else is better, has their shit together, and as he puts it, he's more Jell-O than rock. It's a great insight into training and being a trainer at Ft Benning, various locations in Vietnam, being a LRP, being in Tiger Force, and more. A really great book.

dinadan and gawain are just so hilarious. they hate each other. they are each other. they both recognise themselves in each other and hate that so that they don't have to hate themselves for it. incredible.

soredamors is the sister of gawain, and falls in love with alexander when he visits arthur's court. the two pine over each other for a while until guinevere decides that enough is enough and sets them up. they marry and soredamors gives birth to cligès before they all return to greece. they are very cute, they spend ages questioning whether they're in love, their love juxtaposed with a war, soredamors' little debates with herself (as taken from the submitter: 'i am really fond of soredamors' little internal monologue agonizing about whether she should call alexander her sweet friend or not, it's so real and cute to me (also guinevere then comes in and calls him friend easily iirc, which. like. love's overthinking)')

One of many iconic posters whose images you’ll still find reproduced as prints, on T-shirts, etc. It’s so great! And not inspired out of fantasy, but reality, as you’ll see when the actual pictures start coming up on this blog :)

Intro to the fair from the Chicago Architecture Center:

Rather than turn longingly to the past, the 1933-1934 Century of Progress Exposition looked to the future. It was the second world’s fair hosted by Chicago. The site of the fair was Northerly Island, an artificial stretch of land that is actually a peninsula, not an island.

Despite its name, the fair was less a retelling of Chicago’s first 100 years and more a showcase for modern living, consumerism and entertainment. All of this was driven by the need to stimulate spending during the Great Depression. There were nearly two dozen corporate pavilions at the exposition pushing the latest gizmos and gadgets for home and car—a big increase from the nine corporate pavilions at Chicago’s 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.

The exposition’s architectural team included Daniel Burnham’s sons, Hubert and Daniel Jr., who took the reins of their father’s practice following his death. Unlike the elder Burnham—who 40 years earlier emphasized the Beaux-Arts style in the “White City”—the 1933-1934 fair planners embraced a vibrant modern aesthetic. These styles would later come to be known as Art Deco and Art Moderne. They feature clean lines, synthetic materials and bright splashes of color. Leading the charge among a who’s who of designers assigned to construct areas of the fair were young architects Louis Skidmore and Nathaniel Owings, who would later found Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. They designed exhibitions throughout the grounds, ensuring a consistent aesthetic—one that Frank Lloyd Wright, left out of the planning, derided as a “sham,” but that others saw as progressive.

George Keck's famed House of Tomorrow also debuted at the exposition. It was later transplanted to the Indiana dunes alongside other futuristic homes. This steel-framed model home deployed a radical use of glass and a curtain wall system. It included not only a garage, but an airplane hangar for the day when we’d all need a space to park our private planes. The interior of the house was more down to earth, with features like dishwashers and air conditioning that would indeed become commonplace household items.

The Century of Progress Exposition had many lasting architectural impacts on Chicago. It introduced millions of people to newly created lakefront land near the Museum Campus and put them in contact with new inventions.
