Thinking about James Fitzjames' Worst Summer Internship Ever on the Euphrates and his boss's eccentricities because apparently Francis Rawdon Chesney buried his wife, Everilda (what a name!) with the military uniform he wore on their wedding day in 1839. This mean little man gets stuck in the Shatt-al-Arab, comes home, marries, loses his wife and then one of his rising-star former adjutants is lost in the Arctic. You can't make this stuff up.

Things we don’t talk about enough in the Terror and Franklin fandoms:
Graham Gore served on the Dotteral as an 11 year old and a young Francis Crozier was the Mate. Gore’s dad was the captain.
Gore’s grandfather was a lieutenant on Captain Cook’s expedition to try and find the Northwest Passage.
The Euphrates Expedition that resulted in James Fitzjames’ walk across Mesopotamia was led by Francis Rawdon Chesney, Crozier’s namesake.
James Fairholm is wearing Fitzjames’ jacket in his daguerreotype, according to a letter he sent to his father.
John Irving was such a math nerd that his silver medal from a mathematics competition he entered was found in his grave.

@rhavewellyarnbag replied:
They were apparently named after the same man, Francis Rawdon-Hastings, first Marquess of Hastings, at one time the Earl of Moira. He was a friend of Crozier's father, and Chesney's father served under him in the American Revolutionary War.
RIGHT, and given that 1. they were both born in county down 2. their fathers had at least this one friend in common 3. victorian society in general (and the expedition business in particular) seems to have been a fairly small world, i think it's safe to assume that they would have had SOME awareness of each other.
have no idea if chesney and crozier ever had anything to do with each other irl, but in the Terror Expanded Universe i like to think that they know each other, and hate each other, and are both absolutely furious whenever someone confuses one francis rawdon for the other
like early on in his acquaintance with crozier i think fitzjames makes some joke comparing the two of them, just in a “haha what are the chances” kind of way, and crozier is LIVID

#Francis RAWDON Chesney I believe #because it was obviously James Fitzjames’s goal to serve under as many Francis Rawdons as possible #Francis Rawdon Chesney #Francis Rawdon Moira Crozia (via @blasted-heath)
Fitz Fact Day 17: Known as the best Walker in the service, James Fitzjames once walked and rode a camel for 500 miles just to deliver some mail and also get as far away from Captain Francis Chesney as humanly possible.

Crozier and Chesney were actually both named for the same guy, Francis Rawdon-Hastings, Earl of Moira, Marquess of Hastings. Chesney Sr. served under him in the military, and Crozier Sr. was his lawyer. Hastings Co, Ontario, and Rawdon Crawley (Vanity Fair character) are also both named for him.
omg that’s a cool detail about the jacket!
