Francis Henderson Sr’s Family
i’m back for a little bit to share what i’ve learned about Francis Henderson Sr’s wife and kids after he moved to Newport, Rhode Island. i am unsure if any of this information has been discovered and shared in the time i’ve been gone, and if so, i’m sorry for repeating information. i haven’t been on Tumblr since my last post, iirc, and i don’t feel like checking, i’m sorry!
For quick background, in Francis Sr’s letters to John Adams, he says that he is living in Rhode Island and briefly visiting South Carolina. Reminiscences of Abbeville also states that Francis Sr lived in Newport and vacationed in South Carolina during the summer. It also states that after he left Junior in Scotland and moved to Rhode Island, he got remarried and had children.
The first of this information is a Newport census report from 1850.
Listed is a 71-year-old man named Francis Henderson, who it says was born in Scotland, which matches Frances Laurens’ ex-husband. Included in the household is a 53-year-old woman named Elizabeth, a woman named Janet, and a man named Robert, both in their twenties. Also included is a woman named Jane Armstrong, who it says was born in Ireland.
Using this information, I was able to find a Find A Grave connected. The cemetery the grave is connected in is located in Newport.
The grave lists three people, Francis Henderson, his wife Elizabeth Gouffran, and their daughter Janet Carruthers. There is a discrepancy, as their graves say Francis died at 80 on March 24, 1853, and Elizabeth died at 75 on March 7, 1855, while the census states they were 71 and 53 in 1850. Janet’s age is also discrepent, but I’m inclined to believe these are the same people, and I’m more inclined to believe that their graves display their accurate ages. This estimates his birth year as 1773 / 1774, meaning he was 21 or 22 when he married 18-year-old Frances Laurens.
Find A Grave connects this grave to that of a man named William H. Henderson, born in 1816. If this is the son of Francis Henderson and Elizabeth Gouffran, the H likely stands for Hoggan, as another grave found is for a nine-year-old girl named Elizabeth Hoggan Henderson, the “eldest daughter of Francis & Elizabeth G. Henderson.” A grave for a Robert J., who was listed on the 1850 census, is not connected. However, a Newport record does list the death of a Robert James Henderson, born est. 1826 and died in 1914, and is described as the son of Francis Henderson and Elizabeth G. Henderson.
With this knowledge, my personal current belief is that after arriving in Rhode Island, Francis Henderson Sr remarried to Elizabeth Gouffran, and they had at least three children, possibly four or more, including daughters named Elizabeth and Janet, a son named Robert, and possibly another son named William. Unlike Francis Junior, all of these children remained in Newport, Rhode Island. There is no evidence that, unlike their father, they vacationed in South Carolina as they are not mentioned in Reminiscences despite it otherwise being very information heavy. They likely never left / moved away from Newport, unlike their older half-brother.

Adding a few more details to this. According to “Reminiscences of Abbeville (etc.)” Francis Henderson Jr “boarded with the McLaren family.” According to a letter Francis Sr wrote to John Adams, Francis Jr first arrived in Charleston in 1821, “Myself and Son, soon afterwards, arrived here, to spend the remainder of the Winter and Spring, and attend to the affairs of my Family, in the State of South Carolina.” The letter is dated 6 April 1822, and Francis Sr continues with “... at Newport, Rhode Island,—to which place, please God, I shall return the end of this or early next month. “ “Reminiscences” stated that Francis Sr lived in Rhode Island, “spending the winter in Charleston and Abbeville,” and would board with the McLarens with his son when he did stay. It doesn’t say when Francis Jr started living full-time in Abbeville exactly, but that after graduating from a German college he “traveled a year or two. He then came to Charleston and read law with Jas. L. Pettigrow...” likely referring to James Louis Petigru, a lawyer who lived in Abbeville County. It says that Francis Jr only left Abbeville three times (although this is in the time the author knew him, which was after 1834).
Hurrah for Hampton says that Edward Henderson was born in 1828. From my understanding, the claim that Edward was Francis Jr.’s son isn’t even sited, as the source “157″ is a census from 1880 about Edward’s household. Despite that, Francis Jr could have fathered him. He was in the right place and living with the people it says he was living with. If Francis Jr is Edward’s father, it’s completely possible that John Laurens’ might have descendants living today, as it says that Edward had a wife named Harriet and at least one child, a daughter named Mahala, probably born in 1866.
Are there still descendants of any of the Laurens siblings still alive like you know how Hamilton still has descendants alive.
From what I've seen, all the surviving Laurens kids ( Patsy, Harry, and Polly ) had long lasting lines of families, and there are likely living descendants to this day; but I can't really find any persons in particular. The only one whose bloodline stopped rather shortly; is John Laurens, because his grandson, Francis Henderson Jr, didn't have any children.

John Church Hamilton to unknown, New York, [January 12, 1824]
Dear Sir: In the proceedings of the Senate, I yesterday ob served the Report of the Committee of Foreign Relations on the Petition of Francis Henderson Jr. In the course of my inquiries I have had an opportunity of forming an opinion of the services of Lieut. Col. Laurens and of the estimation in which he was held by the family of the Commander in chief, which entitles him, beyond all question to the first rank among the young men of the revolution. During his immediate attendance at headquarters he was, with Col. Hamilton always selected to perform the most delicate offices of his station, and was entrusted with Gen. Washington's most secret confidences, and, from the period of the arrival of C D'Estaing, until the close of the campaign of 1781, in the communications with the officers of our ally, the aids derived from him were invaluable. His military career has left behind him an uninterrupted blaze of glory. Sent forward to R Island, by Gen W. to superintend the conduct of affairs in that quarter until Gen. Greene took the command; to Col. Laurens is principally attributed the reconciliation of D'Estaing, who had been offended by Gen. Sullivan's indiscretion, which excited the most serious apprehensions as to its effect on our ally. His gallantry on this occasion was so conspicuous that he received from Congress a vote of thanks and a tender of a commission of Colonel, which he declined from delicacy to his brother aids. At Monmouth where every member of Gen. W's family seemed to contend, not only for their country but for their personal reputation, as connected with their chief, he participated in all the exposure of the day and, in the controversy between W. & Lee which agitated the camp and Congress, such was his devotion to the former that, late in the year, he invited Gen. Lee to a rencontre, who, after receiving a slight wound, made an explanation equally honorable to himself and satisfactory to his antagonist.
On the invasion of Georgia in '79, Co' L. hastened to Carolina. Here he was conspicuous in preparing for the expected invasion. In order to aid the councils of the State, he was elected a member of their Legisla ture where he used every arg to call out the militia and forward the black levies which he had begun to recruit. On the arrival of Gen. Lincoln, he immedi ately joined him; was present in the storm of Savannah, and such was his chivalry, that, after the retreat was sounded, and the troops had fallen back, he continued on, in the direction of the enemy's fire until C D'Es taing, who was himself wounded, pointed him out to Lincoln, who ordered him to draw off a detachment in order to remove him from the field.
The misfortune of that day menacing the most alarming consequences, Laurens rode express to Philadelphia, in order to urge succours to the Southern Army. Here he received a new mark of confidence; being elected by Congress Secretary to the Minister at Versailles- a situation which he peremptorily declined (though sought for by the most conspicuous names in the country)_ in order to rejoin the army, and was at last induced to accept, on an intimation “that there was no other individual on whom the two parties in congress could unite.” Circumstances having occurred to render his departure on this service unnecessary, he hastened from Philadelphia and arrived in sufficient season to take part in the defence of Charleston, where I presume, he was taken prisoner_ (this fact I have to learn). The most important incident, however, of his life and that having the most immediate relation to the claim before you, is his mission as Envoy to France in Feby. 1781. The magnitude of his services on this occasion are matters of history, but among many inte resting incidents connected with this event there is one which may not be before the public. Vergennes was opposed to any open interference on our behalf at the outset of the quarrel, and always continued adverse to our independence. In this spirit he presented every obstacle in the way of Col. Laurens negotiation,_ Wearied by these delays L. obtained an interview with him, and after a warm expostulation, characteristic of his noble spirit, he broke from him_ prepared a memorial to the king, and, waiting upon him in the succeeding levée, regardless of the etiquette of the court, handed it to Louis in person. This decisive bearing although it excited great astonishment, was followed by the happiest effects. On the succeeding day the ministers contended with each other in their zeal to promote his views, and he returned here in sufficient season to aid us in a most critical posture of our affairs. (The money obtained by Laurens was deposited in the Bank of N. A. and sustained the financial operations of Mr. Morris until the signature of the provisional treaty). Laurens arrived in Boston, in Sept. 1781, and he immediately joined the army and in the storm of the Redout on the night of the 14th Oct, which was the closing scene of my father's service, L. who, with a body of picked men, was detached by him to take the enemy in reverse and intercept their retreat, entered the works among the foremost and made prisoner the commanding officer. As a compliment to his gallantry and in reference to the capture of Charleston, he with the Viscount De Noailles, was appointed a commissioner to settle the terms of the capitulation. (Signed) John C. Hamilton.

Blurb: For years, old woodcarver Mr. Meacham has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter Grace, who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales...until she meets Pete, a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant green dragon named Elliott. From Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie, an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

John Laurens' grandson was probably a physician
Francis Henderson Jr, only surviving child of the marriage between Frances Eleanor Laurens (one and only children of John Laurens) and Francis Henderson, a Scottish merchant who met France in a bank, according to the newspaper of Abbeville, (I have a post about that and here you can see the microfilm of the newspaper).
In the newspaper, the author claims Francis Jr was graduated of the University of Edinburgh, they also said he was a specially well-informed and intelligent man, studying in “one of the first universities in Germany” too.
Since I read that, I asked myself what studied Francis Jr and maybe, today, I have the answer.
According to George Washington's Indispensable Men, Francis graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1819. However, I haven't seen it mentioned in any other place and even in the article from the newspaper (written by a known of Francis Jr) doesn't mention the date of his graduation and the reference they use in George Washington's Indispensable Men is a Washington's writing, therefore this can be an inexact date (as happens with the year of born of Francis Jr, which some sources have it in 1800 and others in 1801)
I didn't know it, but the University of Edinburgh has a great conservation of graduated students since 1585, unluckily, the year of 1819 isn't available in the Archive Online, however, the faculty of medicine has its own recompilation of graduates.
Honestly, I didn't consider possible Francis Jr being a physician, he was raised by his father's side of the family, who were all merchants, and considering Francis Henderson (father) was considered poor I would have thought his family too, making it more complicated to Francis Jr study medicine.
That, without mentioning he was a good friend of Andrew Jackson (being invited to the White House during the trial with his father) therefore I would have expected him being focused on law or politics.
But, as soon as I searched in the Historical Alumni, I found there's two Francis Henderson graduated in medicine, one of them graduated during 1815 and the other, during 1817.
Even when this can be a strange coincidence, I find incredible John Laurens' grandson could have been a physician. Maybe I'll try searching what could have been the German university Francis Jr graduated too.

Lafayette and Francis Henderson
These images are from Google Books’s snippet view of the book Sales by Parke-Bernet galleries (published 1960.) Parke-Bernet was an auction house that according to Wikipedia was bought by Sotheby’s in 1964. This book is presumably (based on the title) a record of items sold by Parke-Bernet.
I was trying to research Martha Manning Laurens when I came across this, and was immediately intrigued. Francis Henderson, to whom the letter seemed to be addressed, was John Laurens’s son-in-law.
Did this mean Lafayette was in contact with John Laurens’s descendants?
So I searched up some longer phrases from what I could see in the above images, and found the full letter here. A print (not microfilm) version can be found in Congressional Serial Set, Issue 200.
Lafayette’s full tribute (in a letter to Francis Henderson, November 10th, 1825):
“Having been called upon by the representatives of the late Lieutenant Colonel John Laurens of South Carolina to express my opinion of the merits and services of that distinguished citizen and soldier, I must first return my thanks for the opportunity they give me to pay a tribute to the memory of an heroic companion in arms and bosom friend who as I was not long ago publickly expressing it in his native State, has been an honor to his country an honor to mankind.
The brilliant, devoted, and steady services of Colonel Laurens in our Revolutionary struggle are so conspicuously connected with the history of American independence and freedom that a minute account of his civil military and political career would be superfluous. I shall only observe that, either as the champion of a cause, and the citizen of a country, both of which he loved with enthusiasm-- or as a most valued Aid de camp to the Commander in Chief-- as a gallant leader in the field of action as an intrepid volunteer-- or, also, as a Representative of Congress and by their direction, an organ of the army and head quarters to the Court of France, where pressing matters were to be provided for, and important plans were to be arranged-- he has displayed such eminent qualities and patriotic virtues as must impress every well informed mind with the highest sentiments of admiration and respect.
‘That his disinterestedness even to carelessness was a trait among his other qualities,’ is a fact known to his surviving to which may be added, that, whenever cause and country were stake this disposition knew no bounds.
So is the memory of our beloved and universally respected John Laurens the worthy son of a venerated patriot, Henry Laurens, entitled to feeling of regard and affection in the hearts of a Republican posterity.”
Okay so my main takeaways:
“bosom friend...” This whole thing is so affectionate and gushing! It really shows how Lafayette still remembered and loved John Laurens several decades after Laurens died.
“The brilliant, devoted, and steady services of Colonel Laurens...” Kind of related, but Lafayette is almost reverential in his praise for Laurens.
“I was not long ago publickly expressing it in his native State” Lafayette had very recently come back from America, and this implies he spoke about John Laurens in South Carolina. I wonder what he said; could he have perhaps visited Laurens’s grave?
And here’s the more personal letter to Francis Henderson, which is from the Congressional Serial Set 200 I linked above.
“Dear Sir:
As a first answer to your favor from Newport R. I. August 7th, has, no doubt reached you, and as, in consequence of a previous investigation of your claims, you have only applied to me, for what you are pleased to call a certificate of important diplomatic and military services, it now remains for me to send, in time for the session of Congress, a tribute of my personal admiration, love, and patriotic gratitude, for the character of my beloved friend [John Laurens], and for the obligations, which as an American patriot shall ever bind me to his memory. Not knowing whether you are now in Charleston, or on your way to Washington, I take the liberty to entrust this letter to the kind care of the President, who, I am sure, will be glad to forward a correspondence, connected with the merits of one among the best citizens who have illustrated the American character. I request you will offer my affectionate good wishes to his [John Laurens’s] grandson, and believe me with great regard,
Yours,
Lafayette.”
Lafayette was sending “affectionate good wishes” to Laurens’s grandson, Francis Henderson jr.
The context for all of this is that Francis Henderson was (as far as I can tell from the book I linked) trying to acquire more of the money that was owed to John Laurens for his time in France. When Lafayette talks about the “representatives” of Laurens, he means Laurens’s family. The details are all in the book, but it does seem Lafayette at least partly wrote his tribute for the congress session.
But this does not lessen the meaning. In fact, that Lafayette cared that much about Laurens’s descendants shows his intense loyalty to John. Also, Lafayette does seem to want to make clear he is grateful for the opportunity to write about Laurens, saying, “I must first return my thanks for the opportunity they give me to pay a tribute to the memory of an heroic companion in arms and bosom friend...”
Something seems really special about this letter and tribute. I think it’s that there's not very much from either Hamilton or Lafayette about Laurens after he died. We have only a little knowledge of Hamilton’s feelings right when he found out about Laurens’s death, and as far as I know, no knowledge of Lafayette’s. But here’s Lafayette, so many years after Laurens died, finally talking about his friend. Still loving him, trying to look out for his descendants, and ultimately remembering him.

I did more surface level research on Francis Henderson Sr's family. I did some basics back in March, which you can see here. Something else that is important for later information is the research into the possible descendants of Francis Henderson Jr, which you can find here. With new evidence that's popped up, I think it's even more likely that Francis Henderson Jr possibly had a child.
To start, as far as I'm aware, there seems to only be evidence of four children by Francis Sr and his second wife, Elizabeth. William Hoggan Henderson (1816 - 1897), Elizabeth Hoggan Henderson (d. 1828 aged nine), Janet Henderson Carruthers (1822 - 1856), and Robert James Henderson (c. 1826 - c. 1914).
William married a woman named Mary (1817 - 1906). The couple only had one child, Anna, born 1849 and died 1855 at the age of six.
Janet obviously married due to her surname, but I couldn't find any information regarding her marriage, or if she had any children. It's likely that the marriage was short-lived and childless, as she died at 34 and was buried with her parents.
Robert has the most sources out of all of his siblings (including Francis Jr). Robert married a woman named Haley Russel Salisbury. Apparently, she was born in France. They had at least three children, a daughter named Mary Phillips Henderson, born c. 1862, and another daughter born in 1865 probably named Isabel Henderson. They had another son, William H Henderson, born c. 1869.
I couldn't find any later sources for Mary or Isabel (but to be completely honest, I didn't look too hard), but I found one for William. He married a woman named either named Bertha or Elizabeth and had four children. Mary, born c. 1892, William, born c. 1895, George, born c. 1900, and....Mahala, born 1906.
Now, if you read the research I did on the supposed descendants of Francis Jr, you probably had the same reaction I did, of "Hmm??? Mahala???" While I initially wrote it off as a wild coincidence, when I went back to all of my previous research on Mahala (who, for the uninitiated, was allegedly the only surviving grandchild of Francis Jr), it actually lines up shockingly well. Mahala, her husband Coleman, and their children all moved to Rhode Island sometime between 1898 and 1900. I even pointed out in my post that the fact Mahala and her family decided to go to Rhode Island, where their supposed great-grandfather's family lived, was interesting. And Mahala isn't exactly a common name, even in this time period.
I don't know. It seems pretty likely to me that Mahala got into contact with her maybe-cousins and decided to go live with them. It's obviously just speculation; it could just be a wild coincidence.
I haven't done any further research because I was just eager to share after being gone for apparently eight months.

Quote
But just at that seemingly propitious period, he [Francis Henderson Jr] learned of the existence of his mother, whom he supposed had died at his birth, and with the message there came to much for him; his proud heart broke and though caring not for the bowl he sought refuge in it from thence until the grave closed over him.
‘Reminiscences of Abbeville’ in the Abbeville Press and Banner, 19 April 1876
Francis Henderson Jr was the son of Frances Laurens (daughter of John Laurens) and Francis Henderson Sr. The pair separated in 1801, just a year after Francis Jr’s birth, and Francis Sr gained custody of the child. He then apparently left his son with relatives in Scotland and returned to America to oversee financial affairs while Laurens lived in England for the rest of her life. According to this, Francis Jr believed his mother died in childbirth, and after finding out she was still alive he started drinking, something which would contribute to his premature death in 1847.
