Paralimpiadi: giorno 3

“The recurring characteristic of the ugly woman in medieval comic poetry is her advanced age. This element continues to be dominant during the fourteenth century, but the focus moves to a special category of old woman: the guardian. The guardian is a recurrent character in medieval romance.
In the Roman de la Rose (circa 1275), and its Italian rewriting in Dante’s Il fiore (circa 1285-90), she typifies the duenna, the shrewd old woman who, rather than chaperoning and protecting the young woman’s chastity, indoctrinated her in all the tricks to gain the lover’s favour. The Vielle of the Roman (and its Italian variation La Vecchia in the Fiore) is the archetypical medieval literary Old Woman who survived a life in the sex war and now acts as a guide to younger women.”
“In Italian comic poetry of the trecento the guardian appears within the topos of vituperatio vetulae and as a particular version of the Latin comedy and Romance examples. Instead of being a go-between and indoctrinating the inexperienced woman into the arts of seduction, the guardian of comic poetry acts as an obstacle to the love affair, and she is often accused of and cursed for not understanding young people’s need for love. In the comic poems on the old guardian the poet inveighs against the custodian of the young beloved.
Hostility towards the old woman reflects the poet’s feelings towards a female figure who is an impediment to union with the beloved, and who appears to control the situation. These poetic texts are particularly significant since they reveal how male fear of a woman in a position of power is expressed through virulent misogynist attack. What is particularly disturbing to the male poet is the fact that a woman appropriates the gaze.”
“Rules of conduct for medieval women prescribed that both young girls and mature women refrain from looking at others, particularly in public and in the presence of men. In Francesco da Barberino’s Reggimento e costumi di donna (circa 1314-16), we find repeated mention of the importance of women keeping their eyes lowered, particularly in public, not returning the male gaze, and in older ages not even spending time at the window or at the door, to avoid possible visual contact with the outside.
The old guardian who looks thus transgresses the rules of appropriate behaviour is attacked in invectives not only because she guards the poet’s beloved but also because she insists on looking.”
- Patrizia Bettella, “Transgression in the Trecento and Quattrocento.” in The Ugly Woman: Transgressive Aesthetic Models in Italian Poetry from the Middle Ages to the Baroque

Kean & Co. The Potential Breakouts from U19 Euro
11-August-2018
Several stars shone during the Azzurrini’s run to the final of the Under 19 European Championships. There’s depth for days in this Italy squad who will represent the nation at next year’s under 20 World Cup in Poland. In a league where promise from local youth is seldom exchanged for faith and playing time, Osservatore Azzurro looks at who could (hopefully) pop-up again throughout the coming Serie A season. Some have already shown their face during the last campaign.

Fans and followers of Italian football should already be familiar with the raw talent shaped as Juventus’ forward Moise Kean. As a 16 year old, he became the first player born in the new millennium to play in one of the top 4 European leagues. Less than a year later, he doubled down on that record by scoring his debut goal; the first born in the 2000s to do so from the top 5 major European leagues.
Leading up to the Euro finals, Kean was out on loan with Verona gaining valuable experience. His 4 goals from 19 appearances wasn’t enough to fend off relegation, but his performances earned plaudits; particularly his brace against Fiorentina. He was expected to go out on loan again, with Parma and Borussia Dortmund muted as some of the many possible destinations, but he’ll now stay on at Juventus at least until January. With the stellar frontline available to Allegri, it’s hard to see the 18yo getting much game time. Expect a handful of very late entries into games with settled scorelines and Coppa Italia appearances, then a loan move in January to a relegation battler struggling to score goals. In Finland, Kean alternated between starting for the Azzurrini and coming off the bench as an impact sub; with devastating effect in the final. In total he notched up 4 goals and was Italy’s top scorer.
On several occasions, Kean linked up very well with Christian Capone. The latter’s back-heel assist during a one-two with the former kick-started Italy’s comeback to force extra-time in the final. Capone notched one himself against Portugal in the group stages when he opened the scoring with a cool finish. His intelligent running and positioning also got the ball rolling in the semi against France. The forward has a fondness for the French, having also scored against them in a friendly for the Under 21s. Unfortunately, Atalanta elected to send Capone back on loan to Serie B outfit, Pescara, where the 19yo made a name for himself last season. If his parent club progress in the Europa League, there’s an outside possibility he’s called back early, especially if the unsettled Cornelius moves away in January.
Two of the other attackers in the squad find themselves at Sassuolo this term. Enrico Brignola, the forward for Benevento’s romantic first flight in Serie A managed to ink 3 Serie A goals to his name, and former PSV man Gianluca Scamacca. The latter has yet to break pop his cherry in the top flight, but he did make his mark on the Under 19 Euro in contrast to Brignola’s bit-part. The powerful striker showed his prowess in the air by scoring 2 great headers, both in separate games against Portugal, adding to an assist in the opening tie with Finland. Having also appeared for the Under 21s, Scamacca will now be looking to make an impact domestically; so far his only goal came on loan with Cremonese in Serie B. Both Brignola and Scamacca will have to wait their chance, however, as they find themselves in a pool of 9 forwards. Despite employing a 4-3-3, Sassuolo coach Roberto De Zerbi has left the pair in the stands for the opening 2 games. It’ll be imperative for them to make the most of the very few chances that will come their way if they’re to have any say this campaign.
Andrea Pinamonti, was another of Paolo Nicolato’s attacking troop who didn’t make the anticipated impact. More was expected from the Inter youth product who now finds himself loaned out to Serie A new boys, Frosinone. While it’s obvious he’ll receive more playing time with the Ciocari, he and his teammates have it all to do in order to avoid immediate relegation. Despite the arrival of Joel Campbell, the competition for places is not overly daunting, and Pinamonti was already given 10mins in the opening thrashing at the hands of Atalanta; just enough time to see Atalanta score a 4th. An ACL injury to fellow forward Dionisi will bump him up the pecking order, but Pinamonti will need to work hard to prove his promise.
Talented midfielder, Nicolò Zaniolo, was famously involved in the deal that took Nainggolan from Roma to Inter, with Zaniolo moving in the opposite direction. Having impressed enough to feature in the Euro team of the tournament (albeit as a substitute), Zaniolo’s goal against Finland christened the tournament and what followed was 3 assists in the following 4 games. After failing to make his Serie A debut with Inter, Zaniolo will find it just as hard to do so at Roma in the midst of a midfield crowded with talent. Despite being named on the bench in Roma’s opening day win at Torino, it’s largely presumed that Zaniolo is 9th and last in coach Di Francesco’s midfield pecking order. A few months training along the likes of De Rossi and co. will be useful, but he may be nudging his agent for a loan move come January where it’s challenging to see anyone other than a relegation battler taking a chance on him.
Other outsiders who may see some injury times minutes in secured games are Bettella (Atalanta), Tripaldelli and Frattesi of Sassuolo, and the impressive Bellanova (Milan). In Serie B, Melegoni joins Capone at Pescara on loan from Atalanta, although coach Pillon is known more for his pragmatism, rather than his courage in blooding youngsters. Do keep an eye on Brescia, though, where Sandro Tonali will again strut through their midfield after his break-out last season. A player who press and fans can’t resist comparing to Andrea Pirlo due to his style, appearance, and launching club.
Personally, I prefer such comparisons being made when the end product aligns. Precocious talents like these quickly generate a lot hype, possibly because of the excitement we feel when we imagine the lofty heights they’ll one day reach. Or perhaps, like Tonali, we desperately hope they’ll fill the voids left by favorite players who’ve retired; a dangerous game to play. Many regarded the ‘predestined’ Davide Santon as Inter’s answer to Maldini, Lorenzo Tassi (who?) was once seen as the rising of a new Baggio, while the advent of Scuffet had fans and pundits hailing the next Buffon. But if the Inzaghi brothers have taught us anything, it’s that superior talent and skill doesn’t equal a superior career. There are variables, dedication and a bit of fortune among many, that can influence the success or obscurity of a player’s path, but arguably it will come down to the individual’s desire to maximize their tremendous potential. Football is fickle, and it doesn’t take much to discriminate between who will be the next Maldini or the next Macheda.
