This weekend Tarjei, director Frøydis Fossli Moe, and actor Sjur Vatne Brean participated in a Q&A after the premiere screening of the short film "Hemale Education." SPOILER ALERT this video contains spoilers for the film, so watch at your own risk! That being said, this is delightful, and I hope you enjoy it.
Subtitles by me, HUGE thanks to @evakcardamom who worked all day yesterday with me to get this translated and subtitled to share with you all! 👏🏼🙏🤗
Tusen takk to Frøydis Fossli Moe for filming this for us, as well as fielding a few of our questions 😊 I can't wait to see this film! 🤩🎬 More at @hemaleeducation on IG. Moderated by @mikwiik.

Thank you as always to @teejaysnow for giving us an excellently written and well thought out review of a Tarjei thing almost none of us can see yet. 🤩❤️
I went to Gothenburg for a Hemale Education showing and all you’re getting is this crappy blog post (also, beware - here be spoilers…)
Okay, so… first things first (because I know it’s what y’all want to know anyway) - yes, they keep the men half naked all through the film. And yes, Tarjei looks really good in white shorts. So yes, there will be some very pretty gifs coming our way once the film hits the internet…
(Which I hope isn’t for a while yet, btw [although if anyone out there has a bootleg, I’d be more than happy to receive a copy, please and thank you] because the film definitely deserves to first do the rounds at various short film festivals and win all the prizes. Or at least some of them.)
Anyway, from here on there will be major spoilers, because… well, it’s hard to talk about the film without mentioning them, okay? So if you don’t want to know the story, this is your final warning…
Right. So… let’s start a bit non-spoilery anyway - Tarjei’s acting is fantastic (although when isn’t it, right?) As is Sjur’s, btw - but we all know why I was there in the first place, so…
The film starts with Sjur having a nightmare, a dream sequence where all the colours look almost washed out - probably even more so since the film was shown directly after Fence, which had more of a… I guess earthy, natural colour scheme? (Also, on a side note, but… well, on the subject of Fence - where do you find wild boars for a film? Are there breeders you contact about it? Do they have an agent? Hell, yeah, I’m curious!), but even afterwards, once the colours get a bit more saturated, there is still a somewhat drained feel to them, adding to the film’s increasing feeling of hopelessness.
After the dream sequence we are then presented with a closeup of a bum in very shiny (not to mention tiny) shorts, which is more laugh out loud funny than sexy. (Sorry, bum. I’m sure you’re a very nice bum, but… for a film where most of the people are half dressed all through the story, it never feels sexualised? There is often talk about the male gaze in cinema [and sometimes also the female gaze, but that’s usually in response to the male gaze to begin with] but here it’s more of a… well, of a neutral gaze, maybe? I mean, there are no lingering camera shots, no zoomed-in body parts, not even a gratuitous shower scene? Michael Bay could never.)
We keep on following Sjur’s character through the film in a rather Groundhog Day way (which… well, since I watched it on Groundhog Day, that is very on brand, really), but where Bill Murray relives only one day and can change his story every time, the military routine make Sjur’s days all alike, his only ounce of comfort found in tiny interactions with Tarjei’s character at bedtime - just a glance or a smile, nothing big, just enough to make it through another day.
But - and here comes the big spoiler (although if you’ve watched the vimeo video of the film premiere’s Q&A then I guess it’s old news) - after a while Tarjei’s character starts looking drained and sickly (good job both acting wise and make-up wise there, btw!) and those interactions stop as Tarjei is too exhausted even for something as small as a glance. Finally he’s too weak to manage the strict day to day regime and collapses - and with the camera on Sjur’s turned away face we only hear how Tarjei’s character gets beaten to death.
After this, those endless days of repetition just keeps gruelling on with Sjur’s character’s only respite being dreams of freedom (where he’s for some reason frolicking in the sea with Tarjei, which… well, same, tbh), and the film ends with the camera resting on the men waiting for the whistle that will allow them to eat, all of them showing signs of exhaustion - except for the new recruit sitting in what used to be Tarjei’s seat.
Now I would very much like to know if the film was written without dialogue to begin with or if it was a later decision, but either way it’s very effective. These men really have no voices, and - as the ending shows - are also completely interchangeable. It would probably have been a very different film with dialogue (well, duh…), but would it have had the same impact? Who knows.
I’ve already mentioned the rather bleak colours adding to the bleakness of Sjur’s existence, but the editing is also effectively enhancing it. There are a lot of quick cuts of the same relentless exercises being repeated all day every day, from the wake up call until bedtime - giving an almost Auschwitz-y feel to those repeated routines and the officers’ stony faces and brutal behaviour. The men are treated like objects - not even valuable ones - and not only by the officers, but also by the camera.
Could the film have upped the satire even more to make its point even clearer? I mean, considering I overheard the couple leaving just in front of me talk a bit about how they hadn’t really understood the film (unfortunately they walked off in another direction so I never got to hear exactly what it was that they didn’t understand), then I guess so. So there could perhaps have been a bit more of an edge to the message, but it’s still a film that will start conversations - and isn’t that about all you can ask from a film anyways?
Now, did I like the film? It… both was and wasn’t what I expected, but… on the whole, yes. Yes, I did. Maybe it could have been twisted just that little bit more to really hit home, but… the concept is interesting, the acting is top notch, and the production is pretty damn good as well. So yeah, it was well worth those two three hour train rides and staying at a hotel (with the added bonus of an hour and change of having to listen to the couple in the room next to me having loud marathon sex, which… was that woman wailing in ecstasy or from chafing? Inquiring minds want to know…)
Oh, and ever since I watched the film my brain ever so often annoys me with the pink ladies pledge - so for the rest of you, just remember to act cool, to look cool and to be cool. Till death do us part. Think! Pink!

Hemale Education director Frøydis Fossli Moe had an interview with Fotopodden in 2020. In the interview she is talking about the motivation behind making the short film Hemale Education.
Translation by @teejaysnow:
“No, but I like, I like in a way to play with people’s emotions. Like, right now I’m making a film called Hemale Education with Tarjei Sandvik Moe and Sjur Vatne as the main characters. And it began with me reading the newspaper - I need a newspaper intervention, really, I get so provoked. No, but I was sitting reading the newspaper and it feels like the world is going to hell, and not only that, but women’s rights are also going to hell. Countries that used to have good legislation for women have then gone back so we’ve taken one step forward and three steps back. Like, the abortion laws in many states in the USA, right? And there’s… there’s the same thing in all of Latin America and in really religious communities and all that. And it’s just like this, there is nothing that makes me angrier than this, so then I called a friend and said let’s write a script together, I’m really frustrated”. And I don’t know why, I just got… it’s very weird to explain because it’s an extremely absurd universe I’ve created here. So what I really did was, the first thing I did to get the anger out was to write a list of things that frustrated me. How can I tell this to my audience, how can they understand where my anger is coming from. So I made, like, bullet points, three bullet points that I wanted to develop. And then I took it to the next level, so it’s basically what women go through on a day to day basis with structural oppression, and then I do it to men, just a notch more extreme. So men in this universe, they are… really, they go through so much, you feel sorry for them. And they’re sexualised too, they walk around in white boxers while the women are fully dressed. If you’ve seen the music video for Blurred Line, with Pharrell Williams, it was released and everyone loved it, the music video. And the song. It is, like, a catchy song. But it is men in suits with women who walk naked around them, and nobody reacted. So I wanted to do the same. It got really disgusting, I felt like Harvey Weinstein when I was fully dressed and around me I had twelve men who were wearing almost no clothes. But that was part of the point, though, to see the woman rule this universe. Then the men can simply get to learn their lesson.
It sounds like a very interesting film.
Yeah, it’s… it’s… twelve to fifteen minutes without dialogue. So, it’s pretty out there...“

I got home from Oslo not too long ago and I’m currently looking through photos and videos from the Hemale Education Q&A. Cast and crew were placed in the front rows and audience were placed in the back rows, so even with iPhone 12 pro the photos I took got really bad!
I didn’t film much of the Q&A, as I were the only one filming (I asked Frøydis Fossli Moe through insta dm’s a while back and she said I could film) (Everything were being recorded by the crew so everything will be published in a while I hope 💚)
When I have seen through the few clips I have I will post them here on tumblr, if not today I will tomorrow.

Hemale Education
Today Tarjei has been a part of cast that was filming short movie by the name of Hemale education. This short movie has been written by Mari Ørstavik and directed by Frøydis Fossli Moe.
The short is about a world where the woman is at the top of the food chain and the man's only job is to be of service to the woman. We are taken into one of the institutions where the man is prepared and trained to live in this world. The man does not resist, the woman has long been sovereign and unbeatable. There is both a hopelessness about the situation these men are in, but also a desperation to reach out, be good enough. We are shown the rooms in this building, which is a villa on Oslo's west edge. Men run on the treadmill to be in shape, they stand in the kitchen and have to feed the woman, and they sit in the basement and sew pink clothes for them. With a stylistic twist that is reminiscent of Wes Anderson in scenography, this short wants to create a humorous yet serious image of feminism and feminist opponents.

I messaged Frøydis Fossli Moe on instagram yesterday, asking if it would be okay to film the Q&A and she responded back to me later in the evening saying that we’re allowed to and that it’s not a problem, SO I’ll be filming the Q&A!
She will get a friend to film too, but it will be so nice to be able to have the Q&A on my phone as well!
25 more days to go!

Frøydis Moe director of Hemale Education just posted this to her instastory!
I really hope that I will be able to see the screening. It’s free entry but who knows how many people will be allowed due to covid restrictions. Maybe it’s 200 now?
I will also see 20 November that day, originally at both 13.30 pm & 16.00 pm, but the day will show if I decide to go to both times 💚
