I'm awake and I WAS ABLE TO WRITE even tho idk if I'm happy about this scene I think it's time to tell y'all how our dear Mobei-Jun is doing

He's...... Well. Here we go.

Mobei did his best to avoid the food and water, but the chambers were not a laughing matter, the sequence of battles disrupting his recovery, forcing him to feed instead of meditating and gathering energy. They have gotten progressively worse, to the point of him finishing the last one with a cold to his bones so intense that made him swear to buy the softest carpets for Qinghua when he got back.

Because he would be back. Not if, when.

Another problem had been time. It felt like it ran differently inside the weird temple; he would look at the running numbers on the floating parchment, fight for hours, glare at it again and see that a few minutes had passed by. He was tired, but certainly not enough to lose time? But the other option would be the shapeshifter being capable of manipulating it. Then, how long has it been since he saw Qinghua? Weeks? Months?

He mustered all his energy to put the dark thoughts aside, head throbbing, arm numb. This time the Thing had made him exhaust his shadows, the roaring beast of his ancestors’ power eerily subdued.

He was ready to fall face forward on the bed when the sound of clapping made him turn around, an ice sword at ready.

“Oh, I apologize. It wasn't my intention to startle you,” the Thing said as kept Its distance, hands still clasped together.

“What. Do you want.” Mobei kept his sword pointed at It, muscles burning from tension. It was like a river of fire was coursing through his veins, making him hyper aware of his vulnerable state.

“I've came to congratulate you.” The Thing took a step to the side, then other, then one more, starting a wide circle around Mobei. “Your progress through the chambers has been remarkable. Better than expected,” It stopped next to the table where all the foods and drinks were served, most of them untouched. “However, your strength still is not up to your normal standards.”

Mobei had to force his body not to react, to not attack and kill the Thing and be done with this farce of kidnapping once and for all. It was provoking him, baiting him into being harsh. Even so the grip on his sword tightened, the ice not cracking purely because of it being made by Mobei himself.

“I don't understand what you mean by that.”

The Thing picked up one of the many berries, turning it side to side before eating it with a blank expression. Then It licked Its fingers, staring at Mobei.

“Would that suffice?” The bowl was pretty, translucid jade carved with drawings all over the rim, a piece of beauty that seemed to have been stolen from the Heavens. He could easily reach and grab it. He was wise enough to ignore the offer. Instead he kept his eyes on the Thing, considering his chances.

If Mobei attacked It, he would die. He was too tired and using a portal would be impossible at the moment. He considered running to the door, but what would be the chances of it being unlocked? Slim to none.

He might not have another opportunity, but it was most certainly a trap-

“What do you mean?” he asked instead of acting, the tip of his sword scraping the jade bowl, tapping it to the side.

“I've just demonstrated that the food is not poisoned. I have no intention of harming you, that would make this entire interaction pointless. If I wanted to kill you, you would already be dead.” It said with a small tilt of Its head to the side, picking up another berry, slowly chewing it as if having to count the bites. “You've been maintaining the bare minimum to survive the chambers,” the Thing made a noise that Mobei guessed it was supposed to be a sigh. “However, to have accurate data you need to be at your full strength. Which means you have to eat.”

“I have eaten,” he snapped as he shifted his foot, talking the smallest step towards the door. Many years ago, the possibility of even considering running away from an enemy would be unspeakable. Now? His husband had taught him more than once the advantages of living another day to fight back.

He couldn't- he wouldn't die here, away from Qinghua.

“Not enough,” the Thing moved Its fingers as if plucking the air, the clicking sound of a lock settling in place making Mobei let a curse through his teeth. “Consider this an incentive. The more you postpone having proper meals and rest, the longer it will take for you to return to user UV001.”

Again with that cursed title, as if Qinghua were a thing instead of a person, as if he were an amusing toy and all of this has been a ploy to make his husband dance in circles trying to find Mobei.

“Why do you call him that?” He didn't want to keep talking with the Thing, but he recognized an opportunity to gather information when he saw one. “Why not call him by his name?”

“Why would you want to know?” the Thing asked after eating Its third or fourth berry, bright green eyes focusing on Mobei-Jun as It started walking back towards the door. “This information is not relevant to you or to your progress in the chambers.”

This wasn’t his type of battlefield, and Mobei wasn't good at improvising. Politics and thinking fast on his feet had been Shang Qinghua's skill. It was what made them a ruthless pair. When his husband's honey words weren't enough, Mobei was there to be his sword and see that his will was done. And when Mobei ice and shadows couldn't reach the minds and hearts of enemies, Shang Qinghua was there with a whisper and a smile, ready to turn the tables to their favor.

It wasn't as if he were bad at court machinations, he had been raised by his uncle after all. He just preferred not to deal with it. And by letting Qinghua be responsible for most of the paperwork in the past years, he might have become a bit rusty on these types of confrontations.

He didn't close his eyes, but still he threw a prayer for any Gods that might hear to lend him the brains to beat the Thing in their game.

“Shang Qinghua had many names during our life together,” he said slowly, buying himself time to think. “But you call him by a title this one has never heard before. Makes this one think that you've known Shang Qinghua from somewhere else.”

“Ah,” It walked towards Mobei, offering the food one more time, a stilled smile pulling Its face, baring Its teeth in a poor imitation of kindness. “Good to see that your mind is sharp even with your levels of exhaustion. However, this information cannot be given freely.”

“And I'm willing to pay a price for it,” he took the bowl from the Thing's hand, eating one of the berries in a demonstration of good will.

The Thing's eyes glowed as they became unfocused, staring over Mobei's shoulder. The silence dragged, heavy as a serpent-boar from the southern valleys, the Thing static, as if It had been frozen.

It blinked, the image of Its face shifting like a spectral shadow, overlaying for a second, worsening Mobei's headache. The unsettling smile; that It had dropped while staring at the wall, came back with vengeance as the Thing pulled too many of the magical parchments up, the crackling magic giving It a maniac air that sent shivers down Mobei's spine.

He swallowed dry, as if a heavy stone scratched his throat and sunk down on his stomach, the taste of berries turning into ashes on his mouth.

“Let's make a deal, then.” It said as It touched one of the parchments, moving Its fingers over symbols that Mobei couldn't comprehend. “For each chamber you complete using your full strength and energy you will acquire a number of points. You can trade these points for answers. As a reward.”

“Very well,” he agreed with a sharp nod, holding back a flinch when the cold fingers touched his forehead, right on his demon mark. “Congratulations, congratulations, congratulations. I hope you enjoy your beta user experience!”

Then It vanished, leaving Mobei with the feeling of having sold his soul for a meager price.

Issa & family - They are apart of a family of 6, two of which are college students, while their youngest child is 12 years old. They are trying to evacuate and continue their children's education!

Hafez & his daughters - He is a father two young and bright girls, Malak, a 5-year-old with a love for school and his baby Habiba, born during the occupation. Please donate so they stay healthy!

Mostfa and his family – A young Palestinian body builder who has broke many records and set a precedent for his community, he and his family suffers from the occupation and sickness caused by it.

Eldarya Come-Back

Eldarya EU servers are back up. For people out of the loop, a fire destroyed both the servers and the backups of Eldarya. It's not beemoov's fault.

BR and US servers, stored somewhere else, are perfectly ok.

The FR server accounts were lost, but the story retrieved.

All the others (IT HU PL DE ES RU) have both the accounts and the story wiped out. ANE has been re-translated/Recovered, but origins is currently only playable in english.

Only the first 2 episodes of ANE have been translated so far. Errata corrige: PL, RU, ES haven't released any ANE episodes yet. DE IT and HU have the first 2 available in english. DE and HU appear to be broken.

Level 7 and episode 6 of origins (completed) are needed to access the market.

BUG REPORT: Currently there is a bug where if you change the name of your companion for the first time after evolving it you lose 100gc. please take care.

BUG REPORT: If you already have a companion and you play episode 3 of Origins you won't be able to hatch the companion Kero gives you and you might get stuck right after "Objective: Go to Kero’s room to complete the Companion Questionnaire"

♦ WHAT DO I GET?

Everyone gets 1000 maanas, 100 gold coins and 350.000 ancient coins upon creating an account. You will also get 5 big exp potions, 10 small, 5 big energy potions, 10 small, 1 evolution potion and 3 incubators. You will also get the companion Sogiluv... it's not very good. You can retrieve some (most?) of the currency you bought by contacting the support (see below), you will be credited maana/ancient coins depending on your purchases; once you get the money back the 3 spin-offs will automatically unlock, along with the bank outfits.

The first companion to hatch will require no incubation time.

BR and US Server got 10.000 AC for their troubles too, but no maana or GC or items.

♦ WHAT'S THE BEST COMPANION TO USE?

Since you can now get any companion you like if you want to get the "best" one in terms of energy/luck ratio you should consider these:

PLESE NOTE: Hatching an adult companion (Chiromagnus, Blobbiathan) has the advantage of giving you an adult companion AND saving the evolution potion. This could be nice to have, for example, during a map event, you can use all the energy of your companion after midnight, then hatch another egg, use all the energy of the baby, evolve with the potion, use all the energy of the adult. If well played , with a baby companion, it means potentially 400-500 energy to use on the map

"Best" Companion, bought food (36 maana): Blobbiathan Energy 170 (already an adult when hatched) Luck 360 - 400

"Best" Companion, bought food (30 maana or less):

1. Chiromagnus Energy 160 (already an adult when hatched) Luck 340-390

I consider the Alfeli "better" because its food, elven grapes, comes from a 20energy/30 min area, Mont sizhe, compared to the food for the gallytrot, gallyflore, from the Cave (35 energy/60 min).

♦ WHAT CAN I USE ANCIENT COINS FOR?

There is a special ancient coins shop (Until May 9th) with ALL the items ever released in the game. I do not advise using them for Origins illustrations but I suggest you grab some of the rarest items at least. It's among the boutiques.

BANK ITEMS WILL ONLY APPEAR AFTER RETRIEVING THE PURCHASED CURRENCY (? Im not sure about this, some are there from the beginning and I'm still waiting on the email I sent for the currency)

♦ HOW DO I GET MY BOUGHT MAANA/GOLD COINS BACK?

Go to "your account" by clicking on your name (top right). There is a button to retrieve the credit, for many payment options there is a simple form to fill.

However, if you paid by credit card or paypal you have to send an email to the support (you can get the adress by clicking on "other"). In the mail you should include:

Credit card:

- Old/New Username (if they aren't the same) - The email address associated to the accounts - The date and the amount in €/$ of a recent transaction (max 12 months old, the most recent, the better). - Last 4 digits of the credit card you used. - I'm not sure what happens if you you used more than a credit card, I'd suggest sending one transaction per credit card and telling them about this issue.

Paypal:

- Old/New Username (if they aren't the same) - The email address associated to the accounts - If it's not the same email address, the email address/username of the paypal account. - The date and the transaction ID* of a recent transaction (max 12 months old, the most recent, the better).

* Transaction ID's can be found in the confirmation email you get when you make a payment or on the paypal website, in the payment history section.

One ID should suffice, they can retrieve them all from there.

♦ WHAT DO YOU ADVISE WE BUY?

On a general note, do not buy things that can be found at all times, like explorations items, other than that, anything you like, but I'd at least consider to buy/play the following:

*** PLEASE NOTE: I've heard rumors that during each event, you will be able to find things in explorations from the previous events of that kind, so easter should have the other easter events' outfits on the map. I'd wait a bit to spend the coins to see if we get any confirmation, the store will be open until May 9th.

HOW CAN I KNOW WHERE (SOMETHING) IS FROM?

Wiki. Or This wonderful site. Or the wikinyan (c'est moi!), I don't mind answering specific messages, I'll update this post with any question I get. If you don't know the french name you can find it out in the French shop.

1. COMPANIONS:

Other than the event companions that you like you should probably consider...

GET:

Minaloo and Draflayel. These only comes from the purro'swap. Once the store closes, if you're unlucky, you'll never see them again.

Calunko and Bunraku. They're 2 of the japan expo rewards and with the merchandise boutique closed, they're incredibly hard to obtain, you need a physical code.

Chiromagnus, while you can get this from explorations, the scroll for it is extremely rare, and 2000 AC is stealing it.

ON THE FENCE:

The Seryphon , Poulpatata (both of them) and the chestok. These can be found on AH but require Gold coins to get in exploration. Personally I won't get them, but it's personal preference.

SKIP:

All the normal explorations companions, no matter how rare. They'll start popping up at the market soon enough

2. CLOTHES:

This is clearly completely at your own discretion, Events and ranking rewards should be considered. However there are some times never released before, like the fireflies so...

GET:

Fireflies. A beta-tester reward item, they were never made available to purchase before.

Steam girl set (Total: 1594 AC). It's the japan expo 2017 reward, 9 pieces

Maana demon and its other 3 colorations is a skin never seen in the game, previously reserved for admins. It could however be added to explorations, like other items of this kind.

Frency French was once an inside joke for ChiNoMiko, has not been made available to the public before, you can buy the skin, the hairstyle (it's a special jackson), Frency French Top, etc it's just a joke, but it's still something you won't see again, if you like it.

ON THE FENCE:

Depending how much you hate alchemy, you can consider some alchemy stuff.

Some rare Skins like Nan'vi, that could be hard to find in explorations

Rainbow and Pearly hair colours, if you like them, they can be rare/offered only in rare circumstances.

Crylasm set (526 AC), top, socks, hat. It was a special Christmas outfit released one piece at a time during Christmas events of 2016, 2017, 2018

Healer support Set (400 AC), made of 7 pieces, it was a special gift given at the beginning of the 2020 pandemic)

Rainbow Spirit (1594 AC), released for the 2020 Pride month (sorta)

Roy’s response to struggling in this particular scenario was to be vulnerable and reach out to someone who in the past had done his best to help him (through addiction—which Dick later throws in his face in a fight during this same period—through getting custody of Lian, etc), and who had struggled with him through other hard things. Like, man, I'm only on chapter 6 or 7 right now. There are like 153 chapters total. I don't think I can keep doing this, it just makes me hate the original devilman and make me never want to pick up manga again, fr.

I don’t believe in people whom instagram page updated once a year. People says when you actually enjoy your time, you wouldn’t even bother to share it to the world. It was our mind, our freaking mind. We barely accepts life as the way it is and that is why we always feel miserable. What people posted on their pages doesn’t summarize the actual truth behind the pictures anyway. Right? So Why bother to count how many people likes our picture - how many people seen our stories and stuff when you can post whatever you want regardless of how many people pays you attention. Love yourself. Start what you wanted to do. Make it the fullest. Post whatever you want eventhough the picture is a mess - if you like it ; then post - in the end f the day, it’s not the numbers of likes that matter. What matter is You. What matters is what you are thankful for; for what you have.

May 14 FT4 Mock Contest Session Canceled, New WSJT-X Beta Version Pending

A second hour-long FT4 “practice contest” set for May 14 UTC has been cancelled, following the success of an initial mock contest held on May 9 UTC (the evening of Wednesday, May 8, in continental US time zones). The event followed ARRL RTTY Roundup rules, with everyone working everyone. WSJT-X program suite developer Joe Taylor, K1JT, was among those jumping into the fray. He called the exercise “very useful” and has drawn some preliminary conclusions as to how the FT4 protocol functions in a contest setting.

“FT4 works well, but — as implemented WSJT-X 2.1.0-rc5 — it has some rough spots and performance issues,” Taylor said in a post to the Yahoo WSJT Meteor Scatter and Weak Signal Group. “Many of these have been fixed already during this beta-testing period, and more improvements are still to come.”

Taylor said a second mock contest session using the current -rc5 “release candidate” (beta version) would not be helpful, and it’s not convenient for the developers to build and distribute -rc6 in time for a session early next week, a few days before the Dayton Hamvention. “Instead, we are aiming now to release WSJT-X 2.1.0-rc6 about 2 weeks later — probably in the last week of May or the first week of June,” Taylor said. “Another mock contest practice session will be scheduled soon after that release.” The current -rc5 beta version will expire automatically on June 7.

Taylor said he used a program build that was probably closer to the pending WSJT-X 2.1.0-rc6 beta version than to -rc5. “With my dial set at 7.090 and a 4 kHz displayed spectral window, my waterfall was mostly filled with FT4 signals from well before 0000 UTC to well after 0100,” he said. Taylor managed some 60 stations in 22 states, four Canadian provinces, and in two DXCC entities.

“Generally I found WSJT-X to work well in FT4 contesting mode, but I noted several behavioral oddities that still require attention,” Taylor continued. For example, he said the “TU” message need only be sent once, and if the new station needs to be called again, the leading “TU” should be stripped. He also noted that the “Call 1st” check box becomes unchecked in certain circumstances. “This was intentional, part of an attempt to defeat robo-QSOs; but there may be a better way to address this issue,” he remarked. He said the “Best S+P” button was effective, but feels its behavior can be improved. “Its selection of a ‘best’ caller should favor new multipliers, and perhaps also stronger signals,” he said. “Currently, the button only functions as desired during a reception interval.”

In a post to the Yahoo WSJT Group, Rich Ferch, VE3KI, described the mock contest in one word: “chaotic.” He requested eliminating the “feature” that lets the operator continue to call a CQ-ing station, even after the station has come back to someone else. “At the very least, make it wait until the other QSO is over before calling,” he said.

Before the practice event, Taylor said the developers were “looking for feedback on what works well, what does not, and what an FT4-enabled contest might be like.”

The WSJT-X Development Group reports that it’s aware of several other anomalies in the -rc5 version of WSJT-X 2.1.0. In addition to unexpected program crashes, the program will reset itself to FT8 protocol after the operator accesses the Settings screen. The current build of WSJT-X 2.1.0-rc5 does not run correctly under macOS.

Installation packages for Windows and Linux are on the WSJT-X page. A full release of WSJT-X version 2.1 is targeted for release in July 2019.

Our story: How my mum’s former employer tried to bill grieving widow £5500 for 105 mins work.

I want to share an experience and lesson, so that others can learn, not to go thru the same and maybe save thousands of pounds too.

Our Story

My Dad passed away in Jan 2017.

What you won’t know is that since then, we have been in arguing against the legal system and my mum’s former employer, a solicitor in Scotland who tried to bill a grieving family £5500 for 105 minutes work.

For many people my age, sadly, the number of weddings you attend goes down and is replaced by attending funerals.

I share our experience, in the hope that it you can be informed and save thousands of pounds, from going to lawyers and others who prey on the vulnerable, use and write the law to be on their side, have some frankly disgusting behaviours and unethical practices when people are at their most vulnerable.  

My Dad had a simple estate, three bank accounts, a credit card, a pension and some shares. We knew the balances and looked for legal advice to close it down. In a time of despair, where would you go? As there is only a handful of solicitors in Irvine, and the fact that my mum used to work there it was a simple decision to go there.

Not that we were functioning much logically at the time, but we presented the death certificate and asked to transfer everything to my mum, nothing more needed. No feuding, no ex-wives, no brother, sisters, sons, daughters, cousins staking any claim, no complicated affairs, nothing. As simple as it gets. When my mum worked there, there were an extremely frugal company to say the least. I remember going into the office after school. Very much the typical dinosaur type lawyers, technology wise and frugal beyond belief that resisted change and spending on anything at all.

So, without applying my normal diligent thought process, we signed the terms and conditions to close the estate. People have been dying forever and the legal system has been dealing with it for centuries. Expecting solicitors to charge 2-3 times what you would expect, I naively thought we might get a bill for £500-£1000. So, five months later we did get a bill.

Not for £500 but for £5500.

Let that sink in a little. One, maybe two or max three hours work I estimated, so even for the craziest charge by the 12-minute slot of laziest lawyers. Not £1500, Five thousand five hundred. £5500.

As you can imagine, that came as quite a shock. A big shock.

So naturally, like someone querying a large phone bill, I asked for an itemised break-down.

This was a challenge. A much great challenge than you would think because solicitors don’t want you looking deeply into what they have been doing and spending time on. Despite four months and four requests, I did receive a list of sorts which was not itemised, no running totals and not one that made a lot of sense.

I have a first-class university degree and over twenty years’ experience in business & finance industry. I am a computer & maths geek with accountancy experience and I still couldn’t understand it. It took me 3 weeks to attempt to decipher the charges, match them to who did what when, at what charge and what items related to the costs levied. Even then I could not completely decipher it. Best summation I could do, was that the solicitors had done 105 minutes work and sent 57 pages of letters, for a total of £5500. Various bills and sums to companies I had never heard of, nor details what the amounts were for or why.

Law firms are in a position of trust. A law firm with an audit file and a legal mandate to charge whatever they please because you have signed terms and conditions whilst in bereavement. Law firms operate this way whilst your guard is down, when you are extremely vulnerable and whilst my perception was that my mother’s former employer would may be even do us a favour and look after her after her husband of 50 years has just passed, follow the regulations and acting as per law society regulations. In short, act in your best interest and be someone you can trust.

I know from having some other friends going through similar process of losing parents and that no-one was paying attention to their solicitor, everyone accepting what their lawyer said and months later subsequently charged, this greatly disturbed me. So, when you are at your lowest eb, having lost a parent, not thinking straight, any solicitor can act in your “best interest” and charge you whatever they please. Who else have they taken advantage of in this way?

I followed the Scottish Legal Complaints Commissions guidelines and complained to the firm’s client relations partner. This got us nowhere. The offered to take £1000 of the bill initially, then £1500 but were not interested in sending a fully itemised bill, nor willing to discuss all the points I had raised about overcharging.

For months we had a lot of pressure via phone calls and solicitor letters demanding payment in full but we resisted them anything until the matter was resolved.

We had a lot of family discussions about giving in & just settling it. Who can argue with a law firm? Who has the energy for that? They are geared up and rightly so, to be above reproach and in a position of trust. My Dad has instilled in me a tremendous sense of stubbornness and resilience, my Dad was never one to back down when he believed in something, especially injustice from big companies and authorities. So, I was determined not to back down.

Next step after getting nowhere with the client relations partner, I decided to take this to the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission. This was frustrating and more difficult than you can imagine. It took me two months of phone calls and letters and proving my case for Scottish Legal Complaints commission to accept my case as valid. First time I tried they said it wasn’t a valid complaint. One of those scenarios where you no one was about to accept responsibility, it was no-one’s fault and the whole thing was about to fall apart. To the SLCC it was the Law Society’s fault, then the Law Society saying they didn’t deal with complaints so it almost fell into a black hole.

Eventually, I did manage to get SLCC to accept 9 complaints out of my original list of 11 complaints accepted for further investigation against the firm. Part of this process, to resolve it quickly that is in less than a further fifteen months, you can have a mediation session to resolve the issues before a formal complaint it registered. I accepted this. I met with two lawyers from the firm and one trained mediator.

What was said in mediation is confidential and I cannot repeat exactly what was said, but I can share and want to share publicly the facts of our experience.

 How Solicitors will con money unethically

Communication & Trust

According to many solicitor’s terms and conditions, they publish and share hourly rates of solicitors, para-legals, secretarial / admin rates. They are obliged to publish rates in terms of business. They are obliged to act in best interests of the client. What ours did, is use £195ph solicitor for everything. Solicitors, also do not charge for anything less than 12 minutes. Like it or not, which I do not, but all solicitors charge a unit of work for the most trivial matter. That I cannot change. What I dispute strongly is that if you are handing in a bank statement or a trivial administration matter, that anyone could validate if documents acceptable and you should be charged at minimum admin fees, not £195ph fully trained solicitor.

There were many examples where solicitors have been operating the same way for years, without questioning the purpose or common sense of doing it that way. Three examples we were grossly overcharged for : share price validation, audit fees and letters.

Valuations

My Dad worked for BP fr over 25 years and had shares. We knew the amount of shares held, and in less than a minute on Google anyone can work out the value. Despite that, under the pretence of acting under a clients best interest, ours wrote a letter (1 unit of work & a letter £39+£40.25=£79.25) to Smith & Williamson to request a valuation. Smith & Williamson charged a valuation fee of £60 and then our solicitor, added also 1 unit of £195 ph again read the reply to that letter. £180 to tell you what you already knew. Not something I asked them to do beforehand either but comes under the arguement of they’ve always done it this way and it’s in the loosely described, wide ranging terms and conditions.

Auditor fees

Typical business practice is for another company to audit your work. So, for us, that 105 minutes of work for £5500 also included £400 of auditor fees. For an external law firm, validated that everything in the file represented good value for money, was all in the client interest and an accurate bill. This stinks to me. I would prefer to see a customer panel or external to the legal system truly assess solicitors fees charged. Or every firm to be more transparent itemised billing, in simple English not the obsfucated, obscure and confusing shambles it is now. The auditing firm knew next to nothing about the case. Despite it having more holes than the Titanic.

Letters & Lack of common sense

One of the credit cards my Dad owned was an M&S credit card, which had the princely sum of £66 balance outstanding. Our solicitor spent 1 unit crafting a letter to request the balance, 1 letter sent initially, 1 follow up letter as the first one was not answered in 5 days, then another unit reading the reply and another letter to us to tell us they had received the balance amount from M&S. Again, the absence of logic, common sense and acting in the best interest of the client sorely lacking but our solicitor did expect to charge over £200 for this admin sorry “legal service”.

RBS 4 letters and 1 unit just to confirm we have an account with them, which we knew already and could prove for free. Again, low amount balances and charges that are completely unnecessary and can be done yourself, done for a fraction of the cost. There is never a warning in advance, do you want us to process this, do you want us to write letters and charge you £195ph for something you can do yourself in 2 minutes? No warning to say that you can do things yourself upfront, without incurring completely unnecessary costs, that require zero legal skill and are purely administration or secretarial tasks at best. This theme is repeated for our entire case, there was nothing complex about closing an estate, nothing complex that required top legal advice for more than an hour at best, then for a secretary to carry out the instructions from the solicitor.

Cost Estimates & Explanations before work is done

We were never given any ball park costs, no estimate, no range of expected costs in advance. Solicitors are reluctant to estimating costs upfront. Solicitors hate this, and want to use the terms and conditions, hourly rate maximum billing with no-one watching how long, or how much anything costs. As I have experienced, challenging this is very difficult and even when taken to Legal Complaints Commission, to get a full investigation, solicitors do not like this at all. In every other walk of life, being transparent, held to account is standard practice. When dealing with someone’s estate, trust is paramount in solicitor, it is everything and it should be unquestionable trust.

If you have to have your solicitor do something for you, give them enough work to do in bulk. If you give them five * one-minute tasks spread over five days that will cost 5 units. If you give them all 5 at once and stipulate you expect this will be one unit of work, this will make it easier when reconciling both statements on effort, cost and billable units.

0.5-1% of estate value goes to Solicitor for doing nothing

Valuation of the estate was another bizarre exercise. After being charged over £200 for share valuation which went to a professional firm, the valuation of my parents house was done by me. I have zero residential property skills, zero interest or knowledge in property valuation other than googling house prices in Irvine. I gave an estimated value and this was accepted without question. So the most valuable part of the estate is valued by me? The total value of the estate is essential part of closing down an estate. One of the most unscrupulous pieces of business is that solicitors will also claim 0.5%-1% of the estate for themselves. This is for the sole purpose of them providing escrow, security and trust to distribute the estate. Watch out for this. In estates that are passionately disputed by warring family members I can see why it is needed, for a flat fee, not for a percentage of the estate. This is a disgusting and underhand tactic, which can be thousands of pounds for doing next to nothing.

Now I do not doubt that complex estates that have families in dispute do require legal professsionals, all the same having worked in consulting, having this experience and several other painful experiences with the legal profession, there is a huge amount of money to be made prolonging the problem. Consultants and lawyers take great delight in charging by the unit, making the complex more complex and time consuming.

What’s wrong with the billable hour

You would expect that law firms believe in putting the client first, doing things the right way and having a deeply rooted ethical values which drives all behaviour. The billable unit and billable hour is at great odds with this.

The main problem with the billable hour performance metric is that it specifically rewards and underpins behaviours that can be both to the detriment of the firm and, more importantly, its clients.

Customers do not like the billable hour. It is far to open to abuse. There is little correlation between quality of service and cost as the client still gets charged the same amount whether the solicitor wins or loses. There is more money to be made doing a poor job than a great one.

Rather than engendering a positive relationship with clients, billable hours create an huge debate between parties with both sides analysing, evaluating and auditing the fees. When solicitors only present the audit file after the invoice and have a lack of transparency and hidden charging mechanisms around pricing means that clients never really know how much and for what they will be charged at the end of a project.

Clients know that billable hours are inflationary because they will be charged for a block of unit time whether or not they use the whole block. This inevitably leads to a negative perception.

What’s more, the fear of being charged a significant amount for simply contacting your lawyer means there is little incentive for regular communication. The clients can be reluctant to call the lawyer and equally they can become cynical or suspicious every time the lawyer contacts them.

Within the firm, billable hours drive inefficiency. To generate more revenue for the firm, somewhat counter-intuitively, individuals seem to be rewarded for prolonging litigation, ‘churning the bill’ and creating unnecessary work.

  Law Society Admits it needs reform and is out of touch

The professional body for Scotland's solicitors has called for wide-ranging reforms to the way legal services are regulated.

The Law Society of Scotland claims the current regulatory framework is "in drastic need of modernisation" and is "no longer fit for purpose".

It has put forward 11 recommendations for change to an independent review of legal services regulation.

They include overhauling the legal complaints system.

The organisation argues the current system is "complex and confusing”

I wholeheartedly agree it is complex and confusing. We settled our complaint early. From my Dad’s passing it took fifteen months to get to SLCC, thru mediation and our complaints accepted.

It would have taken another eight to fourteen more months for the complaints to be investigated.

We accepted a settlement at 50% of original cost, still was almost £3000 to be paid more for the fact to get rid of the energy taken up arguing against the legal system. I vehemently agree we would have won our case against the firm and maybe even entitled to compensation. But we didn’t have the energy for that.

They admitted every complaint, they admitted they could do better and it was eye opening experience for them. They are dinosaurs and not operating in the real world, they are not alone but operating in a bygone era of charging whatever they like, regulated by legal firms doing the exact same billable hour practice which maximises their revenue at the disgust of the customer.  

My mum wanted an end to the fighting. 

This was my email to SLCC explaining our decision

Following a lot of family discussion after the mediation session, we have decided to end the complaint process at this stage. This decision has not been taken lightly, but mainly due to my mother's health, the emotional strain, stress has gone on long enough and the thought of another 8-14 months of time to conclude the complaint, is far too much to bear.

 Make no mistake, or be under no illusion, this absolves the firm of nothing. They accepted and admitted being culpable for 9 complaints registered, and I have no doubt whatsoever if it were not for such a protracted process to resolve things, they would be found guilty of all matters raised against them.

 Having witnessed face to face how out of touch law firms are with reality, how damaging bereavement is, having to deal with solicitors’ incompetence, how open to abuse solicitors have in billing to people that are grieving, then also go thru another 15 months of intimidation from this process, completely disgusts me. People are completely broken during this process, have no energy to face life, never mind be proving that a law firm and its processes are completely wrong and out of touch, is something that needs to change. As a professional I charge for my expertise, so will not be telling the firm how to improve their business practices but I will be informing the public how they can avoid untrustworthy, out of touch companies who try to extort and pressure widowers and families out of large sums of money, hiding behind a process which even the law society says is broken.

  Time for Change

It is time to change this behaviour, process and practice. 

Solicitors overcharging and exploiting bereaved clients, still grieving and without the energy to fight the legal system absolutely disgusts me.

I want my experience to be shared, as I know several other people and friends of friends recently going thru the same experience, with no idea how much their bill will be and what they are being charged for.

How to integrate SEO into the translation process to maximize global success

When expanding internationally, there is common misconception that SEO, and in particular technical SEO, should be done once the website has been built. However, by implementing any SEO recommendations after a website has been translated, there could be extensive rework which will delay a website launch and impact on budgets. There are also some aspects in a site’s infrastructure that are essential to optimize in advance to avoid extensive rework later. So, how do you go about building this into the translation process?

The old approach to translation

For a while now, companies have been aware of the need for a local language website when targeting new global markets. Back in 2014 a Common Sense Advisory report stated “75% [of web visitors] prefer to buy products in their native language. In addition, 60% rarely or never buy from English-only websites.” Competing in global markets with a non-translated website is no longer seen as a viable option if a company wants to compete against local business.

The traditional approach has been to focus on translation only, with the key debate being around whether you should use a human translator or machine translation, such as Google Translate.

This approach is now shifting as companies have begun to realize the benefits of localizing their content and website for their target markets. Instead of a single piece of content being translated word for word, companies are now adapting the content to resonate and engage, allowing them to compete more effectively against local competitors. This is known as transcreation, where marketing messages are adapted to different cultures and languages whilst maintaining the original context and intent of the messaging.

However, localization and transcreation are still not enough to succeed globally. Customers need to be able to find your website and the only way to do that is to increase your online visibility. This is where integrating SEO into translation workflows comes in.

A new approach to succeeding globally

To succeed in new markets, you need to maximize the visibility of your products or services. To do this SEO needs to be woven into the translation process, but it needs to be adapted to different markets. The key elements to consider are localized keyword research, site structure and hreflang implementation.

Localized keyword research

Many companies simply translate domestic keywords in the hopes of ranking well in new markets. The problem with this strategy is it doesn’t take account of the search volume in different markets or country-unique keywords that may have high search volume but no domestic equivalent terminology.

The only way to ensure you are targeting the right relevant keywords is to use a vendor with native linguists who also understand the process of keyword research. However, many believe keyword research is enough to help you rank in new markets. This process needs to occur alongside technical SEO, two elements of which we will now discuss.

Site structure – which domain?

When it comes to site structure, it is important to consider future expansion plans and ensure the option you pick is future proofed for your needs.

There are three main options to consider:

ccTLD – Country Code Top-Level domain (example.fr)

In general, this is the preferred domain option when expanding internationally. By using the ccTLD you’re not only sending a strong signal to search engines that you are targeting a specific country, but you are also establishing trust with the user, which will result in a better click-through rate from the SERPs. For example, users in France are notoriously swayed by .FR websites and will be more likely to click on these than generic domains such as .com

The downside to ccTLD is there is no sharing of link authority from any parent top-level domain. In essence, you’re building up the link authority of these sites from scratch, which can make it harder to rank. There is also the potential for your domain to be unavailable in new markets.

Sub-folder (example.com/fr)

The main benefit of using the sub-folder approach is the shared link authority of the top-level domain. Any links built across all the country sites will benefit each subsequent site because that link authority is held within the top-level domain. This can have a real ranking benefit for all your regional sites, even if they are relatively new.

The downside is it creates less trust than using a ccTLD structure and as a result, this may impact on the click-through rate. It is also a weaker location signal to search engines compared to ccTLD and using a sub-domain structure.

Sub-domain (fr.example.com)

This approach sits between the other two in terms of pros and cons. Firstly, there is a degree of location signal given to search engines because you can host separate sub-domains in separate countries, which could potentially give you a ranking boost in that country. There is also some sharing of the authority of the main domain, but certainly not as much as you would see with the sub-folder approach.

The downside is that there will still be some linking activity required because you won’t benefit from all of the link authority of the ccTLD. The location signal is also not as strong as you would get with a unique ccTLD.

It is important to choose a domain structure that is right for your business and future expansion plans. ccTLD is the ideal structure but for some companies it may not be possible, or you may decide the sharing of link authority is more important and opt for a sub-folder structure. Whichever option you chose, it is important to consider site structure before building a website, not after.

Implenting hreflang

Hreflang is an HTML tag that you can add directly to the source code of a page when you have duplicate content in multiple languages. It helps search engines understand the language of a piece of content and therefore help ensure it’s served to the right users in the right market. Correct implementation of hreflang is essential to ensure your localized websites are ranked correctly.

A key element to consider is how to implement hreflang correctly for two bits of same-language content that target two different countries e.g. French for France versus French for Canada. By incorrectly implementing the hreflang code you could not only affect your chances of ranking organically in an entire market but also affect the original and other connected sites.

One vendor or two?

When it comes to integrating SEO and translation into one workflow, a big consideration is whether to have one vendor who specializes in search engine-optimized website translation or two vendors, one an SEO specialist and the other a professional translation company.

If you already have agency support for SEO as part of your integrated digital marketing strategy, deciding to just outsource the translation element may seem like the easiest option. However, managing two vendors can become a tricky task and it is difficult to weave the SEO into the translation process this way. Also, some digital agencies may be experts in SEO but they may not have the same expertise when it comes to international site structures or international keyword research. Finally, every time you update content, there is also a potential for previous SEO work to be overwritten and this can lead to large costs as previous SEO work will have to be redone having implications not only on project costs but also search traffic to your site.

Having one vendor allows you to manage the process much more easily. The workflows of the language service provider should be refined to weave SEO in throughout and there should be one upfront cost for the SEO work, which should save you money in the long run. Having one vendor also helps with ensuring keyword research has been carried out that is relevant to the new market rather than a simple translation of domestic keywords.

So, what next?

The translation industry has changed a lot in the last few years, moving from just accurately translated content to localizing content to resonate and now optimizing on a local level for increased organic visibility. Whilst incorporating SEO is a big step in the right direction, there is still more that can be done to increase the chances of success in new markets. The next step for companies is to consider the cultural elements when they expand internationally. This includes the best payment methods, delivery options and trust signals for those markets. By incorporating this with SEO, you will improve your online visibility, conversion rates and ultimately your overall ROI.
