Anthony's Stupid Daily Blog (795): Mon 20th May 2024
Like a fool I listened to Chris Jericho's band Fozzy's new ingle that he's been using as his entrance music in AEW for the last few weeks called "Spotlight" and GOD DAMN IT, now Fozzy have two songs that I like. If I keep liking their songs that will really make it hard to maintain my narrative that the band is shit. This damn song was stuck in my head all damn day which made it feel even longer. I agreed to so an extra half hour overtime again after my shift had finished. I'm lucky that this has come along because it's extra money for doing fuck all really as all we have to do is walk around doing as much cleaning as we can in half an hour. The time goes by really quickly and if I do this for a week once a month then that will pay for my petrol for the entire month so I'd be a fool not to do it really. Getting this car really was the best decision I could have made because not only do I not have to agonise about whehter I'll actually make it to work like I was with that fucking bike but now I'm prioritising my money to make sure I've got my rent and car payments sorted out before I pay for anything else. Annoyingly whenever I'm driving home down the narrow road towards Sunderland there has recenlty been a group of about ten or fifteen kids just wandering along it in a big cluster, not even in a straight line like the Lost Boys do during the Following The Leader song in Peter Pan. They always take their sweet sweet time getting the fuck out of the way too. I realize that I can't mow them all down because I think that's still illegal in my neck of the woods but if they would just walk in a line then I could just mow down the one at the back who would then fall onto the kid in front of him and so on and so on creating a domino effect. If I did this I think I could convince the courts that I only meant to kill the one at the back and the remaining fourteen deaths was just a hilarious case of manslaughter. WHen I got home I re-watched the iconic Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a movie that impressively has gone on to cultivate a legacy as one of the greatest horror movies ever made despite not containing that much blood or gore. Much of the horror in Texas Chainsaw comes from what you don't see and is merely implied and the horror in question is beautifully illustrated by the blood curdling screams of actors Teri McMinn (Pam) and Marilyn Burns (Sally). Their screams of agony and torment mean that you don't need to see what they are seeing, their shrieks paint a horrific enough picture in your mind as it is. The one part of the movie that still frightens me to this day despite half a dozen viewings is the bit where Jerry opens the freezer and sees the presumed dead body of Pam lying there which then sits up and uses the last bit of energy to try to get out of the freezer before Leatherface shows up, caves Jerry's head in and then puts Pam back in the freezer. It's even more terrifying when she sits up as it's accompanied by the sound of a wooden door opening which you wouldn't think would go with this scene but I'm telling you the sound plus the look of desperation in McMinn's face is the stuff of nightmares. I read an interview with McMinn where she says that her character of Pam was a born fighter and McGinn believes that she would've found a way out of her predicament and survived…hmmm yeah you keep thinking that Teri. I personally can't think of a way that a woman who had spent an undisclosed amount of time hanging by their back from a meathook and then placed in a freezer would manage to escape despite massive blood loss and possible hypothermia but if you can that's this week's competition so if you can think of an answer just write it on a shovel and then whack yourself in the face with it.

Returning Too Late

A/N: Check out Mattie’s entrance theme at the end.
I looked around at the back hallways of Daily’s Place like I hadn’t seen it in a long time. It wasn’t like we hadn’t been back to the place over the last year and a half, but there was something different about it now. My heart was full in a way that I couldn’t explain. It had been a long road getting here, but it was time.
Tonight was Mattie’s in ring debut with AEW. Her first real match on the roster. The first one not with Matt or Nick or one of her extended aunts.
I sat backstage in her locker room, watching as she sat on the floor stretching. She looked so much like Matt just then, her dark hair hanging long around her face as she moved into a split and leaned forward. I couldn’t count how many times I’d seen Matt and Nick do the same thing, pulling each other back and forth before a match.
“Are you nervous?” I asked, leaning back against the wall.
Mattie looked up, her blue eyes bright and wide. “Terrified,” she said with a grin. “But I can’t wait.”
She pushed her arms high above her head, and I could have sworn I heard her shoulders pop. Her head rolled side to side before she flopped onto her back and stretched from her fingertips to her toes. I smiled fondly as she bridged up and kicked over into a handstand before rolling over to her feet.
“How’s your knee?” I did my best to keep the nervousness out of my voice. The last thing I wanted was to let her know how truly worried I was. She’d trained for this, that every single member of her family—extended or not—had helped her get read for the moment that was about to come.
My daughter walked over to the duffle bag on the couch against the wall. I watched her unzip it, her fingers shaking just a little. “It’s okay. Doc says I’m cleared.”
“I know, Tea,” I replied. “Trust me, after all the years I’ve been with your Dad and Papa, I know that Doc Sampson and TK wouldn’t let you anywhere near the ring if you weren’t ready. I mean… does it hurt?”
She pulled her gear from her bag. It had been a surprise from Denise Cutler. Growing up, Mattie had loved the paint splatter gear that Matt and Nick had worn when they were in New Japan and Ring of Honor. Denise had gone out of her way to find fabric like that again. She’d made stretchy crop top and high waisted bottoms of that material, stitched patches of it on a denim jacket. Mattie’s name was written in neon sequins on the back. Soon afterward came her knee brace, sheer and fishnet tights, socks, and a pair of custom white and splatter Air Force One high tops.
Matt and Nick had been particularly proud of her when she’d decided she wanted to wrestle in Nike’s rather than traditional wrestling boots.
I’d no more than thought about them than there was a knock on the door and Matt poked his head around, Nick just a few steps behind. “Can we come in?”
“Sure, Papa,” Mattie said with a bright smile. She ran her hands through her hair, pulling it up into a knot. She’d go to hair and makeup soon.
Nick looked at our daughter like she’d hung the stars. He’d been particularly emotional about her simultaneous debut and return to the ring. It had been almost eighteen months since her surgery. Eleven of recovery and another six of rehab before she was even allowed in a ring to start prepping for her return. Neither of my husbands had spent more than a few hours away from Mattie since the moment she’d broken an arm and destroyed her ACL, but Nick had hovered more than the rest of us.
“Feeling nervous?” Nick asked with a curl to his mouth. He plopped down on the couch by her bag while Matt leaned against the wall a few feet away.
Mattie rolled her eyes. “Why does everyone keep asking me that?”
“Because it’s the first time you’re going to be on TV. And you haven’t been in the ring with anyone but us in months,” Matt said matter-of-factly.
I stood up and crossed over toward him. The moment I got within reach, I thumped him hard in the chest. “Are you trying to make it worse, Matthew?”
He put the flat of his palm on his chest and made an ow face. “Best to be honest about all of it, Mama. So she knows what she’s walking into.”
Mattie grabbed her gear and pushed her way into the bathroom to change. She left the door open enough hat she could yell back out at us. “Papa, I’ve grown up here. And I know just about everything I could possibly know about it. The hard camera is ramp right. Aubrey is the ref tonight. We’ve got ten minutes right after nine. Then a backstage interview right after the match with Marvez. I promise… I know what’s going on.”
Nick grinned. “And you know Papa and I will be out there with you. You won’t be alone.”
“And I’ll be backstage, Tea. Right next to TK.” The truth was, regardless of how Mattie felt, I was more nervous than I’d ever been.
The bathroom door opened and Mattie stepped out. She stretched, rolling her shoulders and testing out the way her gear felt. Neon paint splatter in pink, greens, blues, and blacks. Ripped fishnets over sheer tights. Those Air Force Ones that Matt and Nick had ordered for her debut. My vision blurred with tears as I looked at my eldest daughter. She had grown up so fast.
“I promise,” Mattie said with a bright smile, “I’m fine. I’ll be fine.”
Matt grinned and pulled her into a hug. He stuck his nose in her hair and squeezed her tightly. “I know, Tea. I know. You’re going to be amazing. Now, you need to go down the hall to Jericho and say ‘Thank you.’”
           “For what?”
Nick stood up, grabbed her denim jacket with his free hand, and pushed her toward the door with the other. “You’ll see.”
***
When it was almost time for Mattie’s match, I sank down in a chair next to Tony Khan at the production table. He pushed a bag of Sour Patch Kids toward me with a sideways grin before reaching for my hand. Tony had come into our lives at a time that couldn’t have been more perfect. Mattie had been almost three when he’d reached out to Matt and Nick with the offer to start a new wrestling promotion. Weeks of conversations and negotiations had led to my husbands deciding that they were finished with New Japan and Ring of Honor. They wanted a new start… one that was closer to home. That gave them a better chance to be with our daughter. To raise her for real and not over FaceTime and Skype.
The moment she’d learned to talk, Mattie had started calling him Bub. Tony had been more than happy to live up to the name. They had been thick as thieves for as long as I could remember. Whenever we brought her to the arenas, she loved going to wherever Tony was. She sat on Tony’s lap through meetings and managing the live show. He’d been ecstatic when Mattie said she wanted to wrestle, and he’d been willing to give her a contract at thirteen—one that delayed officially until she was sixteen and became binding when she was eighteen.
Matt and Nick talked him into waiting until she was seventeen to make an official offer.
“Are you as nervous as I am?” I asked Tony as I grabbed a handful of the candy.
He grinned in that way of his. All energy and wide brown eyes and enthusiasm. “She’s going to be amazing. Just like we’ve always known.”
Dustin Rhodes came by, a girl just a little older than Mattie at his side. She was petite with a happy smile and short black hair. Alexis Smart. My daughter’s opponent for the night. She’d been trained by Dustin and Serena Deeb. Tony was giving Mattie a good showing on her first match on TV. The girls would be debuting on Dynamite together.
“You guys are going to be fantastic,” I called out to her as she walked by. She turned and grinned. Dustin stopped by the table a few feet away.
“Thanks, Mrs. Jackson,” Alexis said, her voice a little nervous.
Dustin put his hands on her shoulders and squeezed. He looked over at Tony. “You still giving them ten minutes?”
Before he could answer, Mattie walked around the corner with Matt and Nick in tow. They practically beamed with pride. I couldn’t blame them. I felt it rush up beneath my ribs the moment that I realized she was a few minutes away from wrestling on live television for the first time. That she was going to follow in her fathers’ footsteps.
“No,” Tony said as Mattie stepped up to the table next to Alexis. He looked between the girls with an impish grin. “No, I’m giving them fifteen. A few over if they really need it. I want you two to have a great first night out.”
Mattie smiled nervously and reached out for the other girl’s hand. Their fingers laced together and squeezed hard.
***
I watched as Alexis went out to the ring during the commercial break. Dustin would be in her corner. I’d watched her get better and better as she worked the YouTube shows and dark matches. There’s no one else I would have picked for my daughter’s debut opponent.
Mattie waited at the end of the tunnel, Matt on one side and Nick on the other. They each put one hand on her back before leaning their heads against hers. I could see their mouths moving in prayer, the ritual they had before every match. My heart swelled with pride and love. I would never get over how much I loved those two men and how much they had given me just by loving me.
The opening guitar of Superkick Party began only to be stopped with a record scratch. A heavy drumbeat and strong guitar rushing through the speakers. I grinned the moment that Mattie realized what it was. She’d sworn up and down that she was fine using her fathers’ entrance music, but Matt and Nick had been working behind the scenes to get her something of her own. When Chris Jericho heard them talking about it, he practically begged them to let him give her one of Fozzy’s songs if she’d take it. Instead of putting the idea to Mattie, the three of them together decided to surprise her with it. They’d settled on Unstoppable, playing over a plain black screen with Mattie’s name scrawled in white with a red line beneath.
Mattie took a breath and took off through the tunnel, Matt and Nick glancing over their shoulders at me before they disappeared. I turned my attention to the monitor in front of me. The ramp camera came into position. Mattie stopped at the top, giving her best Wonder Woman pose. The arena erupted with noise as Matt and Nick came out behind her, falling into their trademark pose. I wiped the tears from my cheeks as Mattie grinned. Streamer cannons went off.
Justin Roberts’ voice filled the air. “And her opponent, accompanied by the Young Bucks, making her Dynamite debut from Rancho Cucamonga, California, Mattie Jackson.”

So, y'all love R-Truth, right?
But how many of y'all remember K-KWIK???
R-Truth origin story behind cut.
So, here's the deal. Back in the Attitude Era, there was this little place called WWF New York. It was a theme restaurant, not unlike the old Hard Rock Cafes and Planet Hollywoods. It was situated right in the middle of times square and, while anyone could go into the gift shop, you needed a reservation (I believe) to go in the restaurant.
One of the features of the restaurant was a stage where they would have WWF shows performed, as well as an announcers booth where the commentators could stand.
At the point where our story takes place, WWF NY was the host of Sunday Night Heat. The matches for the show were taped during RAW events and aired the following Sunday, while the commentary I believe was performed live at WWF NY. Also, there would sometimes be musical acts for Heat. One week around this time, Disturbed played Stone Cold's new theme song. Another, "Moongoose McQueen" led Fozzy in a cover performance.
Yes, you read that right. Fozzy. At the time, Jericho was performing in Fozzy under a stage name to try and keep the two acts separate. Also, at the time, Fozzy was strictly a cover band. It's a wonder the group lasted long enough to make Judas.
Getting sidetracked.
Anyway, so Road Dogg Jesse James, now a singles performer and broken off from DX and Billy Gunn, was scheduled to do a musical performance on Heat. However, he found himself presented with a young man named K-Kwik in the green room.
K-Kwik's story was that he was a huge fan and that he wanted to perform with Road Dogg in the show that night. Road Dogg, having just freed himself from another run with Billy, told him NO WAY, I'm on my own now, I like it that way.
Well, Kwik was not to be deterred. He swore up and down that he had skills and that Road Dogg NEEEEEDED to let him perform. All the while James kept trying to shoo him off.
In the end, K-Kwik wore Road Dogg down and he decided to let Kwik perform with him.
Cue the two of them going on stage and performing a several minute long song that specifically referenced the two of them teaming up.
Because that makes sense.
Anyway, after they performed their clearly rehearsed duet, Road Dogg decided that K-Kwik was pretty dang good and thus, a new tag team was born by the name of... Road Dogg and K-Kwik.
And their entrance theme was, indeed, the same song the pair had rapped on Heat, performed much like how R-Truth raps "What's Up" on the way to the ring.
Of course, things don't always work out and Road Dogg hit the wacky sack a bit too much and was fired soon afterwards for constantly showing up to shows stoned off his ass. K-Kwik became a solo act with a new, non-doggy styled version of the theme, and soon faded into obscurity, leaving the company before the Ruthless Agression era even began.
And that would have been the end for Ron Killings in the WWE, were it not for his resigning in 2008 as R-Truth. K-Kwik was no more and, as far as I know, never referenced again, and R-Truth would go on to become the national treasure we all know him to be.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, we did eventually get an officially released version of the Sunday Night Heat duet... about 20 years later on Uncaged VII.

Hamilton, But Sung By The Muppets
This is a fan-made rendition of act 1 of the hit musical Hamilton sung by The Muppets.
youtube
The impressions of the Muppets aren't bad and the "casting" is about what you'd expect:
Alexander Hamilton - Kermit the Frog Aaron Burr - The Great Gonzo Eliza Schuyler - Miss Piggy Marquis de LaFozette - Fozzie Bear George Washington - Sam the Eagle
I don't know if listening to this all the way through is wise, but you should listen at least until Kermit/Hamilton makes his entrance at ~1:18. Oh, and skip ahead to 17:09 to hear The Swedish Chef do Samuel Seabury and to 19:01 to hear You'll Be Back performed by Animal. (via open culture)

While celebrating his victory over the new kid, Aries goes still as the lights cut, a single voice echoing through the speakers, chanting softly "I've become I've become I'm becoming...." before playing Fozzy's "Judas". The crowd erupts in cheers as the Jumbotron flashes a single question again and again "AM... I... EVIL?". Those words, that music, it can only mean one thing. AEW World Champion Chris Jericho is pulling off an Invasion, and he's brought the Inner Circle with him....
“Ladies and Gentlemen, here is your winner, and new number one contender for the X-Division Chapionship! The Greatest Faunus Who Ever Lived! Aaron Ares!”
Ares favored his injured knee, while his hand was raised in the air. He then motioned across his waist, letting the crowd know that he would soon be wearing the gold of the X-Division Championship soon.
However Ares didn’t have long to celebrate. Seconds later, the lights of the arena went out. The VCW crowd went silent, as just like Ares, they were wondering just what in the world was going on.
And then…
“I’ve become, I’ve become, I’m becoming…” Ares felt a chill run up his spine at that whisper that seemed to echo about the arena. Then the jumbotron flashed to life showing a question. “Am I Evil?”
The crowd erupted into silent cheers, as “Judas” by Fozzy began to play. It was still dark in the arena except for the jumbotron, but could Le Champion actually be here? Everyone got their answer a few moments later when the lights came up. Le Champion was indeed here. And he wasn’t alone. All the members of the Inner Circle were with him. Jake Hager, Sammy Gueverra, Santana and Ortiz. And they were all surrounding the ring.
Ares was surrounded on all sides, and was completely alone in the ring seeing as Locke had rolled out of the ring. Fine by him. Ares was used to being a loner. And if it meant fighting off wrestlers from another company with uneven odds with a bad knee? Well then bring it on!
Ares wasn’t going to wait for these schmucks to attack him in his ring. Bad knee or not, this was his ring. His ring damnit! He caught Le Chapion in the face with a running, or rather limping dropkick, managing to land on his good leg as he sent Jericho back to the floor. The Inner Circle was now in the ring. Ares managed to land a few blows onto Santana and Ortiz, and even got Gueverra in the nose, but that was as far as he got. Hager kicked out the back of Ares’ knee, which forced the wildcat Faunus onto his good knee.
The beat down on Ares commenced seconds later. Every member of the Inner Circle was now stomping and kicking Ares while he tried to get his hands up to protect his face. Gueverra then grabbed Ares’ injured leg, and began to repeatedly drive his elbow down into it, which caused the wildcat Faunus to cry out in pain.
Jericho had gotten back to the ring, having recovered from the dropkick. He got Gueverra to back off, and now had hold of Ares’ legs. Though Le Champion didn’t put the wildcat Faunus into the Walls. No, instead Jericho locked in the Lion Tamer, digging his right knee into Ares’ shoulder blades, and didn’t relent even though Ares was frantically tapping out. And as if to add insult to injury Gueverra was in Ares’ pained face, taunting the Faunus … and was subsequently met with a knee to the face!
Wave Aideen had seen enough, and had charged into the ring. Rivalry with Ares aside, he was not going to just sit in the back and let other wrestlers just come onto this show and do whatever they wanted! Wave nailed Gueverra in the face with a Shining Wizard, and he was not the only one to join in the fight. Locke had recovered, and had done a slingshot-DDT through the top and middle rope, and slammed Jericho’s head into the mat, making Le Champion release the Lion Tamer.
Though Gueverra and Jericho were temporarily out of the fight, it was still two to three … which became three to five. Ryder, Omega Red, and Inigo Daturas had charged the ring. Joining their fellow Dust Club member and friend in staving off the members of the Inner Circle.
Red, Ryder, and Wave proceeded to back Hager into a corner, and proceeded to deliver a beat down. Inigo and Locke were laying forearm strikes and kicks into Santana and Ortiz, before dropkicking the two. Stacking both of them up in the opposite corner.
Inigo irish whipped Locke into the corner, the dark skinned Mistrali hitting both AEW wrestlers with a body splash. Locke then got on all fours, signalling Inigo to make his move. The smaller wrestler charged forward, using Locke’s back for a springboard, and nailed poetry in motion, by hitting Ortiz and subsequently Santana with his right hip and thigh.
The Club then turned their attention to Jericho, who was slowly recovering in the middle of the ring. The crowd’s cheering sounded like a jet engine revving up, and Ryder and Omega Red aimed their fingers at Le Champion, as if aiming guns at the wrestler. The two leaders of the Dust Club then hit the AEW Champion with a combination superkick and a high knee.
The Club aided by Locke had forced the Inner Circle out of the ring, Wave having picked up the microphone that Locke had knocked out of his hands. Red grabbing Jericho’s hair, dragged Le Champion to his feet. Wave and Inigo then superkicked him out of the ring seconds after Jericho was dragged onto his feet.
“Hey Jericho!” Ryder yelled into the microphone Wave had offered to him. “Jericho, while you lie there hopefully as uncomfortable as you possibly can be. I want to ask you something!”
Hagar and Gueverra had retrieved Jericho, seconds later and helped him up to his feet. The Inner Circle’s invasion of VCW had backfired, and they were retreating up the entrance ramp.
“Let me ask you something Le Champion!” Ryder said those last two words in a mocking way. “One champion to another ... did you really think you’d just stroll into another show, try and beat down one of our best wrestlers, and just what? Walk out like it was nothing!?”
Inigo and Wave had gotten Ares back to his feet, letting him rest in a corner as Ryder continued speaking.
“Oh and another thing ... You think you guys were gonna walk out?” He pointed to the jumbotron. “Because I know a few guys who would take exception to that!”
“Wrestling has more than one royal family!” The VCW crowd went absolutely ape when Kingdom began playing through the speakers. All the members of the Inner Circle slowly turned around, and there they were. Cody and Dustin Rhodes, The Young Bucks, ‘Hangman’ Adam Page, and Kenny Omega. All the members of the Elite were standing on the entrance ramp, and the Inner Circle was now caught between a rock and a hard place.
And it was about to get worse!
The Elite and The Dust Club aided by Locke and Ares charged the Inner Circle, and commenced a massive beat down on the heel AEW faction. Both the Elite and The Club were driving the Inner Circle back into the ring, while slowly nailing their finishing moves onto every member of Circle other than Jericho, slowly thinning out their numbers.
The Young Bucks nailed Santana and Ortiz with dual Superkicks, spinning them around only for the two to get hit by Wave and Inigo. Those two being hit by Inigo’s Red Arrow, and Wave’s Shining Wizard. Omega and Red got Hager with dual V-Triggers, Dustin hit Gueverra with Shattared Dreams, before Cody followed up with the Cross Rhodes.
Ryder, Ares Locke, and Page were all focusing on Jericho. Punching any part of Le Champion they could find, before Ares rolled the AEW Champion back into the ring. Jericho tried to make a break for the other side of the ring, but Inigo and Wave were blocking him. Locke blocked off another portion of the ring, helping Ares up while never breaking eye contact with Jericho.
The third side of the ring was blocked off by the Elite, and Ryder, Red and Paige had the last side cut off. And as Jericho turned to face that side, he was suddenly blasted by the ‘Hangmans’s’ Buckshot Lariat.
Ares got Locke’s attention, motioning for the newbie wrestler to go up top. Picking up on this Locke quickly got on the top turnbuckle. He didn’t posture this time, just made sure he was clear, before delivering the Coffin Drop to a downed Jericho.
Getting up, Locke signaled for Ares to get into the ring, which he slowly did due to his injured knee. The wildcat Faunus then locked his fingers together across Jericho’s face, rolling over Le Champion and locking in the Last Chancery.
VCW went off the air with Jericho tapping out. Still locked into Ares’ Last Chancery.

torukun1 mentioned you on a post “*incredibly resentfully ripping the Fozzy cd’s* I will always remember...”
@yungcrybby-anonymousbosch I remember recently when you described Fozzy's music as like, the generic metal music in a movie RLM would review in BoTW and it's stuck with me ever since
there is literally no difference between Slade Craven from Turbulence 3 and Fozzy.
this is terrible but i actually find that a lot of Rocky Romero’s njpw music is the same generic type stuff but a different genre. it’s trying to be this but Azucar needs more resources to make something epic sounding. i love hiromu but i couldn’t stan his entrance music.

99: list some songs that resonate to your soul whenever you hear them.
I know of literally no songs that can “resonate to my soul” whenever I hear them but I can list a few I’ve been listening to recently
1: Slow Chemical (a cover by It Lives, It Breathes)
2: Metalingus (Alter Bridge)
3: Judas (Fozzy)
4: The Hearse Song (Chris Ray Gun)
5: It’s just a bunch of The Undertaker (that wwe superstar)’s songs- like the versions of his entrance music which is really good

Chris Jericho’s beautiful view atop the wrestling world
Being the top guy has a specific meaning to Chris Jericho.
The pro wrestling legend is back at the summit of the business at age 49 as the first and only world champion in All Elite Wrestling history. Being the headliner and face of a major company for a significant period of time is a role Jericho has rarely had in his three-decade career. He never won the world title in WCW and only had a combined five WWE or World Heavyweight championship reigns in his nearly 20 years with Vince McMahon’s company.
Being a promotion’s standard-bearer, who carries the weight of helping it and the talent around him succeed, is a job he’s never been more ready for.
“Could I have done more in WCW in a headlining position? Would I have been good? I don’t know. In my mind I’d be great,” Jericho told The Post. “The first time I was put in a headlining position in WWF, I wasn’t ready, and in WCW, it was a couple years earlier. So maybe I wasn’t ready.
“And as the career goes forward, I can tell you the exact moment when I knew I had become a legit, headlining, main-event guy and the exact moment where I became the top guy, which was in New Japan Jan. 4, 2018 [versus Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom], which led to [me] being the top guy here in AEW.”
Now that he’s been “given the baton,” Jericho’s goal is to help elevate others in the company to legitimate main event players, giving them their piece of the spotlight.
youtube
In the more than 13 months since AEW launched, Jericho has had singles matches with Scorpio Sky, Jungle Boy, “Hangman” Adam Page, Darby Allin, Cody Rhodes and others. He cut a memorable promo with Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF), and has surrounded himself with Jake Hager, Sammy Guevara and Santana and Ortiz in his Inner Circle faction. He has been a big backstage supporter of Allin. Jericho described giving the hot upstarts the chance to beat the grizzled veteran heel as the “magic” that wrestling is about.
“We had a match a couple weeks ago where Isiah [Kassidy] from Private Party had such a great false finish, people thought Isiah was going to beat the champ,” said Jericho, the son of former New York Rangers winger Ted Irvine.
Most of the company’s younger talent had very little, if any, cable-TV time before appearing on “AEW Dynamite.” Now they get to share the ring live on TNT or on pay-per-view with one of wrestling’s most recognizable faces. Jericho said he wants to have a match with Orange Cassidy, a slow-moving comedy wrestler with a cult following, at some point, too.
“When you’re the top guy, you don’t hide and stop others from getting in there because then it just becomes stale and it dies,” said Jericho, who was at the New York Toy Fair, where AEW showed off its new action figures and ring sets from Wicked Cool Toys and Jazwares. The first series will be available this August.
“Your job as the top guy is to help everyone else up on top of the mountain so that there are 15 top guys and everybody is making money and everyone’s having a great time, people are enjoying the show and the product.”
AEW’s first series of action figuresAll Elite Wrestling
Wrestling legends are among those taking notice.
“Hulk Hogan called me a few months ago and said, ‘What you guys are doing is putting guys no one had ever heard of in a main-event spot and having them believe that they can beat you,’” Jericho recounted.
Jericho’s current rival is Jon Moxley, formerly known as Dean Ambrose in WWE. The two have a match for Jericho’s title set for AEW’s Revolution pay-per-view on Saturday. Jericho recruited Moxley to AEW knowing his talent level and understanding he was unhappy as he was transitioned into a comedy character in WWE. What Jericho didn’t expect was exactly what person and character would emerge in AEW. When Moxley debuted and attacked him and Omega at the “Double or Nothing” pay-per-view last May, Jericho saw someone who had “completely” changed.
“This is not the guy formally known as Dean Ambrose, this is a completely different person, a new character, performer,” Jericho said. “He’s totally different, not even the same guy. And that to me is another feather in our cap because it shows the creative freedom that you have in AEW that allows you to live and breathe and be what you know you can be.”
Moxley, also the name he used prior to joining WWE, is a violent, unpredictable badass babyface whose tendencies AEW announcer Jim Ross has compared to Stone Cold Steve Austin’s.
“I knew he’d be good,” Jericho said. “I didn’t expect him to just become this amazing. I say that with the utmost of respect. I don’t think anybody, including Mox, would have been able to predict that.”
Both Jericho and Moxley also recently wrestled for New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where Moxley is the promotion’s United States champion. When Jericho was in Japan for Wrestle Kingdom in January, he beat legendary wrestler Hiroshi Tanahashi in a match that would have given his opponent an AEW title shot with a win.
It led to Jericho being outspoken about wanting the two companies to work together in the future given the financial opportunities that would come, especially given the history he, Rhodes, Omega, The Young Bucks and other AEW talent have with New Japan.
He is willing to help make that happen, but Jericho noted that “in other people’s opinion, we shouldn’t” work together before floating the idea of an AEW/New Japan invasion a year down the line.
“I think it would be beneficial relationship,” Jericho said. “Do I think we need New Japan? No. Do they need us? Well, if they want to work in the States, they may want to think about it.”
youtube
During that appearance in Japan for Wrestle Kingdom, the hashtag #fatjericho made its way onto social media along with pictures from the match that showed a heavier version of the Canadian star.
Jericho said the added weight was by design. He wanted to look more like the character portrayed by legendary wrestler Bruiser Brody, a pain-causing killer whom everyone feared. In Jericho’s experience, bigger-looking wrestlers are more respected in Japan. He likened it to Robert De Niro gaining weight to play the role of Jake LaMotta in “Raging Bull.” He has dropped some of that weight since coming back to AEW, posting workout videos to social media.
“When you see the online criticism, I love the idea of the fat Jericho because I can take my shirt off right now and I’ve got six f–king abs,” he said.
It’s all part of Jericho’s constant attempts to reinvent himself, creating new wrestling moments and catchphrases. Recently, the crowd at the episode of “Dynamite” taped aboard Jericho’s rock and wrestling cruise loudly serenaded him with his entrance song “Judas” by his band Fozzy — continuing to belt it out long after he first appeared. It’s continued at each show since.
“The next week, I went to the producer of the show, Keith Mitchell, and said, ‘Let’s pull the music down a little earlier,’ and I went to the announcers, Jim Ross, and said, ‘Don’t say anything,’” Jericho said. “When the music stops, let’s see what happens and let’s see if they continue to sing. We made it a thing.”
When it does, Jericho lets it happen, saying even as a heel, trying to tell the audience to shut up and don’t sing would spoil the vibe and organic nature of the moment.
“If they want to sing the lyrics to ‘Judas’ for an extra 30 seconds, that’s something that everyone’s talking about,” Jericho said. “People are going to go, ‘Wow, are you seeing this?’ It transcends good guy, bad guy. That [leads to] iconic moments in wrestling, which is what we strive for so much and when it happens organically, that’s a gift from the wrestling gods, so don’t mess with it.”
Chris JerichoAll Elite Wrestling
Jericho said the AEW talent is having fun backstage as well. In his opinion, there is no “snaky-snaky bulls–t” going on. The company continues to grow. “Dynamite” was renewed on TNT for three more years. A separate hour-long TV show is in the works, and AEW will run its first “Dynamite” in the Tri-State area on March 25 at Prudential Center in Newark.
“Dynamite” has consistently beaten WWE’s NXT show in the ratings each Wednesday and has had a headlock on the 18-49 demo. While not specifically correlating it with ratings, Jericho believes that AEW highlighting young stars such as MJF, Guevara, Jungle Boy and Marko Stunt is helping to attract a younger audience because “we don’t send them to the developmental league or whatever for five years.”
It’s helping the company expand into action figures and potentially video games down the road. Jericho said he has had around 200 different action figures over his career. The AEW line, which will debut with Jericho, Cody, Brandi Rhodes, Omega and The Young Bucks, stands out to him not only because of the figures’ detailed looks, but the story around them. As the company’s top guy, he’s been one of the biggest driving forces behind all of it.
“We’ve only been on TV since October and these will be coming out in August, so it’s a quick turnaround and the reason why the turnaround is so quick is because the product is hot,” Jericho said. “That’s of great pride to me because obviously when I came to AEW, there was a lot riding on my shoulders to make sure it was a success.”
He’s never been more ready to ensure it.
