#horror island#1941#american cinema#horror film#george waggner#maurice tombragel#victor mcleod#alex gottlieb#dick foran#leo carrillo#peggy moran#fuzzy knight#john eldredge#lewis howard#hobart cavanaugh#walter catlett#ralf harolde#iris adrian#foy van dolsen#emmett vogan#fairly charming‚ fairly silly‚ very minor effort from Universal's comic horror era (see also 1940's The Invisible Woman). truthfully this#would have benefited from a bigger name from the studio's roster getting involved; no Lugosi‚ no Karloff‚ not even an Atwill or a Chaney#don't get me wrong‚ i enjoyed Leo Carrillo's large performance as a salty old sea dog and in particular loved Lewis Howard‚ whose every#scene (all too few of them it must be said) is an unexpectedly camp delight. but it could really have done with an iconic presence in a#leading role. the rest of the film... well a little slow to get going‚ and kind of silly obvs‚ but once we actually get to the island and a#mysterious phantom starts picking off the characters‚ it all livens up quite considerably#and settles into a fairly familiar Old Dark House shape (well‚ if it works it works‚ who's to blame them)#a fun but forgettable time; of interest to ye olde horror freaks but with little to recommend it to the casual viewer
