He was called a “lazy Indian.”

Aboard an ocean liner with the likes of a West Pointer named George Patton and a Hawaiian swimmer named Duke Kahanamoku on their way to the Olympics, he was found “relaxing” on a deck chair, according to the Smithsonian. 

A newspaperman approached him and asked, “What are you doing, Jim, thinking of your Uncle Sitting Bull?”

Though the comment was insensitive and racist, he simply replied, “No, I’m practicing the long jump. I’ve just jumped 23 feet eight inches. I think that will win it.”

The Peace Page has shared stories before of Jim Thorpe - how he was raised as a ward of what they called then Indian residential schools and how he was stripped of his gold medals at the 1912 Olympics, but with the Olympics upon us, the Peace Page wanted to share another story of Thorpe’s.

Every once in a while a picture of Thorpe starts circulating on social media, the one where he is wearing a pair of mismatched shoes. The post claims that Thorpe won a competition at the 1912 Olympics wearing different socks and shoes.

It became so popular that even Snopes had to check it.

Snopes concluded, “This photograph does indeed depict Jim Thorpe wearing mismatched shoes shortly before competing at the 1912 Olympics. Thorpe participated in 15 events during the 1912 Summer Games and won eight of them, leading to his capturing gold medals in both the pentathlon and decathlon. His feat was all the more remarkable for his having contested several of those events wearing mismatched shoes.”

Yes, it was a remarkable “feat” - no pun intended.

But, before we get to the story itself, let’s provide some background.

“Jim Thorpe never had it easy,” according to Noble Humans. “As a member of the Native American tribe the Sac and Fox Nation, he was born in Indian Territory outside of Prague Oklahoma in 1887. The children of these tribes were separated from their parents and taught to be more Anglo-American, they were told to forget their heritage. It goes without saying that life on the Indian Territory was tough.”

“Thorpe was orphaned after his father Hiram passed away,” according to writer John Duffley.

His native name was Wa-Tho-Huk or “Bright Path”.

“Thorpe, like just about every other Native American, faced discrimination,” according to Victor Mather of The New York Times. “The founder of Carlisle, Richard Henry Pratt, had an educational philosophy that Pratt summed up as ‘Kill the Indian, save the man,’ and believed Native Americans must shed their culture and assimilate into mainstream American culture.

His twin brother, Charlie, died at one of those residential schools from an epidemic which swept the school.

His son, Richard, once asked him where he got his strength. Thorpe responded, "he inherited it from his brother. He felt his brother, Charlie, was with him all the time."

Jim Thorpe became "one of the greatest American athletes of all time,” according to Noble Humans. “He played six seasons of major league baseball for the New York Giants (1913-1919) and bounced around the NFL to six different teams.”

But before all that, before he was finally honored on a Wheaties box (48 years after he died), Jim Thorpe would be remembered for his remarkable feat (sans matching shoes and socks) at the 1912 Olympics.

Thorpe had already crushed “the field in the now-defunct pentathlon, which consisted of five events in a single day,” according to Sally Jenkins of the Smithsonian Magazine. “He placed first in four of them, dusting his competition in the 1,500-meter run by almost five seconds.”

“A week later the three-day decathlon competition began in a pouring rain. Thorpe opened the event by splashing down the track in the 100-meter dash in 11.2 seconds—a time not equaled at the Olympics until 1948.”

On the second day, Thorpe’s shoes went “missing.”

Some say they were stolen.

The sleuths at Snopes reported:

“Bob Wheeler, founder of the Jim Thorpe Foundation and author of the biography ‘Jim Thorpe: The World’s Greatest Athlete’, appears to have been the first to uncover the back story behind this photograph. Wheller [typo? by Snopes] conducted more than 200 interviews with teammates, family members, and friends of Jim Thorpe before publishing his book in 1979.”

According to Wheeler, “There’s lots of theories about why they were missing or who took them or what happened, but the fact is that he had a matter of minutes to get to the starting line. He frantically asked teammates if they had an extra pair of shoes. One teammate had an extra shoe. It was too small but he squeezed his foot into it. And the other shoe he found in a trash bin. It was too big and he put a couple pair of socks to make that fit.”

Note that “this was before Olympic athletes had Nike deals [and, back then] the IOC and the AAU ensured that the atmosphere was more like a modern-day High School track meet than the Olympics we know today,” according to Noble Humans. “He couldn’t just go to someone to get new shoes, and he didn’t want to be late.”

After all that, however, he still “went out and competed against the greatest decathletes in the world and won the race at 1500 meters,” according to Wheeler.

Thorpe “was hailed internationally and got a ticker-tape parade up Broadway in New York,” according to the New York Times.

Of course, if you read the previous stories of Thorpe on the Peace Page, you would also know that Thorpe would be stripped of his medals.

Not because he was wearing mismatched shoes and socks.

But, because he “played some semi-professional baseball before competing in the Olympics, violating the IOC’s code of strict amateurism.”

Note again, this was before the Olympics allowed professional players from participating - we’re looking at you, NBA players.

“The IOC’s decision in 1912 to strip Thorpe’s medals and strike out his records was not just intended to punish him for violating the elitist Victorian codes of amateurism.” according to the Smithsonian. “It was also intended to obscure him—and to a certain extent it succeeded.”

“Oddly enough, it was American officials who pushed the hardest to take away his medals,” according to the New York Times. “They were motivated by an almost fanatical devotion to the notion of amateurism, and, most historians say, a healthy dose of racism.”

“In 1912, there was a little bit of prejudice against Indians,” adds, Thorpe’s son, Richard Thorpe, in The New York Times.

But, then again, that’s a whole ‘nother story there you can find on the Peace Page archives.

“Nobody was in his class,” says Olympic historian Bill Mallon.

Mallon, co-founder of the International Society of Olympic Historians, who has served as a consultant statistician to the IOC, believes that Thorpe’s 1912 performances establish him as “the greatest athlete of all time.”

Even with mismatched shoes and socks.

October 25th 1984

"Y/n , Y/n , Y/n wake up I've called for you three times" I rolled over before seeing my stepmother Jill who had my six and a half month old brother Peter on her hip , I sat up before saying "what time is it". Jill responded saying "Matthew already left so now I have to drive you , let's go" she walked out of my bedroom before slamming the door to my bedroom , now I know what your thinking what a shitty way to wake up in the morning but this wasn't uncommon for me. Before my dad married Jill life was a lot more different , my mom Emily was the absolute perfect mother , made everyday and every holiday special that was until she got sick. When I was eight my mom passed away which sent me practically spiraling , I didn't talk to anyone , I stayed in my room and just wanted to be alone until more recently in the past couple of year when I was slowly starting to break out of my shell. When It was just my dad and my brother Matt and I everything was different without mom but we had each other until my dad brought a friend of my mothers over for dinner and told Matt and I they were going to get married , Jill my stepmother had known since I was a little girl. I never really liked her but she was okay , she worked with my mother and would babysit us from time to time but that was all now she was my stepmother who treated me more like cinderella , I did most of the cleaning , I was practically raising Peter who was my father and hers son they had a year after being married and I was exhausted. I was up with Peter in the night , I had school and didn't go to bed till late meaning I was getting maybe three or four hours of sleep. I was tying my shoes when Jill walked into my bedroom , she spoke saying "Y/n lets go now please" I responded saying "I'm ready now Jill" she shook her head saying "what have we talked about you can't call me that it'll confuse your brother". I spoke again saying "I'm ready now mom" she nodded saying "good let's go" I hated when she did that , make me call her mom that isn't fair I have a mom and if she was here she wouldn't stand for this. Jill pulled up in front of the school before she spoke saying "come home strait away I need you to watch Peter this afternoon I'm busy" I rolled my eyes not being shocked before mumbling something under my breath. Jill of course caught me since she spoke saying "what was that" I shook my head as she added "Y/n what was that you said" I looked at the clock above the radio before saying "I uh I have to go or I'll be late and I have a biology test" she huffed before I got out of the car.

I walked into the school and quickly speed to my locker before bumping into someone and knocking whatever was in their hands , I spoke saying "I'm sorry I wasn't looking-" I cut myself off once I saw who exactly I ran into. Steve Harrington , most girls would've have just loved this and would've jumped up and down and squealed like a pig in mud but I was not like most girls. I hated Steve Harrington , a long time ago before my brain fully developed  I had a major crush on him up until I went to a party and woke up the next morning with a splitting headache and a passed out Steve next to me. I quickly dropped his books I was handing back to him before walking to my locker , after grabbing what I needed I finally made it to my first class. I walked in to Mr. Andrews History class to be greeted by the sight of my brother Matthew or Matt and his girlfriend of almost five years seated on his lap. I knew he and Colleen were affectionate (I sadly had walked in on that a couple times) but this was almost embarrassing , I shrugged that off and took my seat before Mr. Andrews walked in saying "Ms. Thomas could you find a seat other then on Mr. Paterson" everyone in the class chuckled except me since I didn't think that was funny before he started the lesson.

My lunch tray had just been filled with what appeared to be mixed vegetables , mash potato's and what they were trying to pass as meatloaf when I walked over and took a seat with my friends as well as bandmates. Yes you heard me I'm in a band , I play drums and sometimes sing backup it was what was getting me through high school and losing my mom and the only thing that was really helping besides art. I took the seat across from our guitarist Ross who was your typical bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks he was seated next to Francine or Franny who  was our lead singer and Ross's on again off again girlfriend. Oh and of course next to me was our keyboard player Brenda Sinclair who also wrote songs from time to time but never let any of us see or hear them since she was so shy. Ross spoke saying "Fran I'm not telling you again I'm not wearing a costume to Tina's party I'll look like an ass" she frowned saying "come on Ross it's Halloween and besides Nancy Wheller in my biology was talking and her and her boyfriend are dressing up , please Ross". He shook his head saying "no way and besides who cares I mean isn't she with the freaks sister" Brenda spoke saying "knock it off Ross he isn't a freak and besides she's with Steve Harrington" I gaged at the mention n of her name before Franny turned to me and spoke saying. "are you going Y/n" I shrugged as she added "you all are so lame come on Halloween of are senior year lets do something fun". Ross spoke again saying "we can do what we did last year" Franny rolled her eyes saying "if you mean getting drunk and going cow tipping then you can go alone" he nodded saying "sounds like fun Brenda you gonna join me" she shook her head saying. "Can't have to stay and watch my sister and wait up for my brother" Ross sighed before saying "Y/n my favorite drummer in the whole wide world" I shook my head as he scoffed saying "you know what you all suck" he got no response before a voice spoke up "Y/n" I looked up to see my brother's girlfriend Colleen standing there . She then added "can we sit with you guys or-" she was cut off by Ross saying "sorry no ex cheerleader allowed" that was low , even for Ross she then nodded before walking away from the table "what in the hell is wrong with you" Brenda said before Ross chuckled and looked at me saying. "What is wrong with you Colleen Thomas seriously you think little miss prim and proper thinks she can belong with us cause she's screwing your brother" I rolled my eyes before Brenda said. "You just think your so great don't you" he nodded saying "I'm the greatest thing that's happened besides that chick kicking Harrington's ass a couple years back" Brenda scoffed before he added "what you don't agree". I huffed saying "first jackass she broke his nose and second that was really shitty what you did to Colleen". Ross responded saying "oh whatever are you gonna do that Paterson thing and storm off or-" Ross was cut off by another voice "hey guys so what's going on" I looked up to see Jeffrey he took the seat next to Brenda before saying "so I got us a gig" we all nodded before he said "so Tina's idiot brother spilt a beer on the speakers so she's looking for a band and I may or may not have told her that the Pinheads are available that night and we have a gig she's paying us two hundred dollars so between the five of us that's forty each". We nodded again before he added "oh and we have to wear costumes" Ross of course rolled his eyes before Nathan continued to tell us about our upcoming gig.

I grabbed the final books I needed before walking out into the parking lot to see Jill's car , I got into the passenger seat before she spoke saying, "I need you to sit in the back" I rolled my yes saying "why" Jill responded saying "Peter fussed the whole time and I don't feel like running my errands with a fussy baby now get in the back". I rolled my eyes before picking up my backpack and sitting in the back seat , I hadn't sat in the back seat since I was ten and now I had to sit because of Peter. I loved Peter don't get me wrong but after the day I had I didn't want to sit in the back seat , I buckled my seatbelt before looking over to see Peter was fast asleep. Jill chuckled to herself before pulling out of the school , on the drive to who knows were I pulled out my Walkman before sliding a tape into it.

When we got to the register at the grocery store and the cashier began to scan the groceries Peter dropped his pacifier and began to fuss , thankfully I caught it before it could hit the germ infested ground and gave it back to him before he calmed himself down. The cashier spoke saying "adorable baby" Jill nodded since anytime someone had something nice to say about peter she agreed but when it came to Matt and I she completely disagreed and had something bad to say. The cashier spoke to Jill again saying "oh so are you grandma" Jill's face dropped before she spoke saying "I beg your pardon" the cashier then added "oh I just saw a young girl with a baby so I assumed-" Jill interrupted the women saying "no we aren't that charity case family trust me , we sadly live across from them , what a tragedy" I shook my head saying "mom really that's Matt's friend-" she cut me off saying "oh please you mean his side peice". I sighed before saying "mom can we just go your being really embarrassing" she shook her head before looking at the cashier saying "sorry about her it's probably her time of the month" my jaw feel before Jill paid for the groceries and we left.

We were sitting at the dinning room table my dad spoke saying "how was practice Mathew" he nodded saying "good we got a game Saturday" dad nodded before saying "how about you Y/n make anyone cry" I rolled my eyes before saying "fine". He nodded again before adding "how are your grades" I responded saying "their good dad" he sighed saying "good grades don't get you in to college great grades get you in , Matt's lucky cause he'll get an athletic scholarship but you need to focus on those grades do you understand". I nodded before Jill spoke saying "well you'll never guess what I heard today" Dad nodded to seem interested in whatever she was saying she then spoke again saying "I heard that the Buckley's are getting a divorce". Dad gasped saying "no kidding" I sighed before she added " I bet she's leaving him , I know I would" I shook my head before she spoke again saying "I'm sorry do you have a problem with that Y/n" I shook my head before saying. "Yeah I got a problem that's none of your damn business" she scoffed saying "young lady you won't talk to me like that , I am your mother". I shook my head saying "no you aren't my mother is Emily Paterson and your will never come close to her" I yelled , I had never yelled at Jill. Sure I've dreamed of it but I never really did it and it appeared Peter didn't like my yelling cause he began to fuss , Jill stood up and picked him up before walking out of the dinning room before my father spoke saying "Mathew get a head start on that homework , Y/n young lady you'll do these dishes" I sighed before beginning to take the dishes off the table.

I had just finished the dishes when I saw Jill standing in the doorway of the living room , she spoke saying. "Y/n your father want to talk to you" I nodded before following Jill in the family , Jill took a seat on the couch next to my father , he looked angry almost disappointed. I took a seat in the chair across before seeing there was an object on the table , it was a red flask. Dad finally spoke saying "Y/n is there something you'd like to tell me , maybe about were this came from". He then gestured to the flask , I shook my head before Jill spoke saying "Y/n honey I found this in your laundry hamper honey you can tell us , did somebody sleep over last night" I shook my head before she added "Y/n Matthew already told us he bumped into somebody coming downstairs , you don't need to be embarrassed okay your at an age where your going to start being interested in those things but you need to be carful". What in the actual hell was she talking about , I didn't have anyone over last night , dad spoke up saying "tell her what else you found Jill" Jill frowned before putting another object on the coffee table , I knew by the foiled wrapper exactly what it was. dad frowned before saying "your grounded for a month , I won't tolerate this in my house and your will start helping your mother with Peter" I sighed before saying "dad I-" he cut me off saying "your too young to drink and your too young to be doing any of that , doesn't that girl down the street scare you she's got a baby there is no way she'll have a future and I don't want that to be you". I scoffed saying "Matt has Colleen over all the time" dad shook his head saying "well that's different , now I want you to apologize to your mother and go upstairs do you understand" I huffed saying "no I'm not apologizing to her , she went through my stuff and she treats me like I'm a maid or her nanny I'm not doing it" I went upstairs before hearing my dad call for me a couple of times , I continued to walk upstairs and ignore his calls before beginning to knock on Matt's door. A moment later the door opened and before he could say anything I spoke saying "what the hell is wrong with you , you told dad so guy came out of my room this morning seriously" Matt shook his head saying "no I didn't okay dad asked me if I've ever seen some guy leaving here and I was honest and I told him the truth" I rolled my eyes saying "did you tell him it happened two years ago when he and Jill were on their honeymoon". Matt sighed saying "no I didn't actually cause he didn't ask" I rolled my eyes saying "well now I'm grounded for a month" he responded saying "well that's what happens when you sleep around I guess-" he cut himself off by saying "Y/n I didn't mean that I " I walked away before entering my bedroom and shutting the door.

I was seated on my bed looking through the box I kept under my bed , it was filled with pictures of my mom , Matt and I , some of just her and few other things one of them being a locket I had remembered her wearing when I was kid. For some reason something came over me and I felt the need to try it on , to wear it and maybe just maybe wearing it would make me feel something , realize something. I pushed my hair aside before putting the necklace around my neck and fixed the clasp on it before putting my hair back and began to feel like it was that cold winter night when I was six years old again. It felt like my mom was their , watching over me but if she was then why was she then why would she let this happen , I felt like cinderella but at the end of her story she got a prince and their no way that'll happen any time soon right ?

I read-ended another car at an intersection. Both of us were stopped at a light. When the light turned green, the other car started moving and immediately slammed on brakes. #ChicagoMed (S2, Ep. 14) "Cold Front" Recap/Review

Like a cold front being the cold air, a new Chicago Med brings once again another great and powerful episode.

 "Cold Front" will be most remember from it's emotional and powerful stories of our heroes facing the odds to help save their patients. If there's an episode that best describe what the show is about, it would be this very episode.

  When a blizzard hits Chicago, it causes a huge pileup on the highway and it looks like everything will be coming to Med. Choi and Jeff are there to treat as much as they can along side with Casey, Severide and Bowden being there. There there was a family of four in a van, a man that was in an explosive truck and a pregnant woman that was found away from her car.

 Let's start with the family: a family of four, one being a cousin, comes in as the father was taken to the OR fast, mother being treated for cuts and wounds but it was the boys that were in need of treatment. One with a hip fracture and the other a leg fracture.

 Both were in dyer need of blood but with a storm and none can't come in, the hospital was low on O- blood, but there was only a couple left. It left a heavy decision time for both doctors and even the mother/aunt as to who gets the blood. The one who'll survive would be the lady's nephew. Do you think that her husband agreed with it, no he couldn't believe that she let them pick her nephew than their son.

 Let's move on to probably one of the most memorable story in this episode was of Dr. Ethan Choi, who treated the burned victim from the crash. But when Dr. Latham saw him, he wanted Choi not to give him treatment because he was burned over 95 percent of his body but Choi tries to fulfill his patient's dying wish for to tell his wife how much he loves her. 

 But after putting him on the vent, Rhodes tells Choi that they needed it with the shortage due to the storm. Choi takes his patient off the vent and helped him pump air til his wife gets there, but still Rhodes later wanted him to help put a tube in for another patient, at that point the patient hears what's going on and grabs his arm to tell him that it was okay to let go. I don't know about you but I was literally in tears throughout Choi's story. But here's probably another one, as soon as Choi is done with that other patient, he overhears Halstead and Manning about the son's condition and that he needed O- blood now, Choi is O- blood and gives as much as the kid needed. 

 Over moments: Rhodes and Latham kind of had another good to WTF moment. Dr. Charles meets a loud patient who needed a refill but when he leaves the hospital and "his brother" calls to tell Dr. Charles that he has died, it kind of set Charles down a moody path. But here's a stunner, he really didn't die, that in fact he wanted to treat Charles badly, but he would pay the piper at the end: being held for 72 hours. And I think we might need to keep an eye on Wheller down the road, I'm a bit worried about him after the last couple of weeks. 

  "Cold Front" is another great and powerful one hour of television. The writing was so powerful and the acting was on another level. I'm literally want to give Brian Tee the performance of the night, maybe even the performance of the week as he was just outstanding. Also Gehlfuss and Torrey also gave their best performance but mostly we got to see a couple of #Manstead moments. Overall, I give this episode a 9.5/10.

As i stood in front of some of my family and friends and a few of my dad's coworkers , I noticed that Steve and his mother were there but his father must've been busy, oh who am I kidding , he probably couldn't care less. He was the kinda man who rescued a pesky orange kitten during a snowstorm and who end up taking a liking towards it. The person who must've read curious George a million times , must've sang never ending story a thousand more times. He didn't do it for recognition , but because that's who he is , the most sweetest , funniest and smartest man. Never once missed a day of work , an anniversary or anything , he was selfless and spoke to each individual with kindness. I loved my dad because of these and many other things, I always aspired to be him , strong , hardworking , courageous. He never once turned someone away , never had anything bad to say about anyone. He had a full heart and a kind soul , that ederments touch everyone. I used to take some of the things he said for granted , but now I understand when he said to watch what you said to someone cause it might be the last. I have to admit the last thing I said to my father was a silly complaint that I wish I could take back. I love you dad , dusty , mom and I miss you even mews misses you , I love dad and I'm sorry . I then stepped back again in silence , I could feel my cheeks soaked with tears. I also saw some of the attendees were teary eyed , "that was beautiful sweetheart" my mother said to which I nodded saying. "Thanks mom". I then looked down and wiped a stray tear out of Dustin's eye , after the service had ended and my father was buried. We entered the hall where light refreshments would be served , in the middle of talking to Jonathan I felt a tugging on my arm as I turned I became face to face with Steve. "Can I talk to you" I sighed excusing myself from Jonathan and began walking outside with Steve , "Helen" he said before adding "I am so sorry , that was totally selfish" I nodded, he then added "listen of you need anything or you need help with-" he then paused not remembering Dustin's name. I sighed "Dustin his name is Dustin" I spatted before beginning to walk away , adding "were best friends , how could you not know that , I know everything about you and you couldn’t give less of a shit about me”. He sighed following me saying “I know your upset-” I then interrupted him saying “no you don’t , I’m upset about a lot a things right now and you probably couldn’t even name one”. He huffed in annoyance saying “I’m not talking to you , until you calm down” he then turned around walking towards his car.

A few hours later I was sitting on my bed , still in the dress I wore earlier. starring deeply at the phone beside my bed , contemplating weather or not to call Robin. I sighed before garbling the piece of paper with her phone number inscribed on it , before dailing it. After a few minutes I heard the most beautiful voice say “hello” I breathed in before saying “hi Robin this is Helen Henderson”. She responded saying “oh hi Helen , how are you” I almost squealed in shock that she remembered me “okay I guess” she sighed before saying “that was really sweet , what you said about your dad earlier”. I again nodded saying “thanks , I didn’t see you there though” she sighed saying “I saw you and Steve , I didn’t wanna bother you guys. It looked intense” I could feel my cheeks flush with embarrassment that she had to see Steve and I argue. “Yeah he can be a drama queen sometimes” she chuckled saying “ yeah he sounds like a real dingus”. I couldn’t help but giggle hearing that word , even though I had never heard that word for some reason it just sounded like Steve. “He really can be” I said to which she responded with “so” before adding “why do hang out with him”. Before I could respond she said “you don’t have to answer that” I sighed before saying “I guess after I moved hear , he was the first person to talk to me” I then added “he probably only hangs out with me since I help with Clicks homework”. She huffed saying “yeah I get it , her class is the worst , I’ll probably end up failing”. I then musked up the courage to say “I could help you study” she responded with “really , can we meet after final period tomorrow” I almost passed out with her response. I mumbled out a quick “yes”before I could say anything else my mother entered my bedroom saying “Karen Wheller brought over a casserole , put down the phone and join us” I nodded saying “Robin can I talk to you later” she responded with “yeah sure , I’ll see you tomorrow Helen”.

After hanging up with Robin I couldn’t help but feel the excitement of tomorrow and the smile creeping onto my face
