Look, time travel is impossible because not only are we traveling through time but also through space but if we can manage to triangulate the exact position of the sun and the earth and the galaxy with a constant point—say the center of the universe and the origin of the Big Bang and the place the entire universe has been expanding from, perhaps we can at least find the coordinates, temporally and unigraphically, that we need to make the jump.
#I’m going to blame Diane Duane and her young wizards for this line of thinking#four thousand years in the grand scheme of things isn’t so big a jump#of course we have to get the coordinates for Now as well#for science#and research

Oh Mighty Word Wrangler, bestow upon me your wisdom!! ♥ What do you think makes your amazing fics so popular? Apart from your OBVIOUS talent and writing ability, of course ;) Is it frequency of posting? The pairings? Amount of smut? I'm curious :D
HAHAHAH THANK YOU FOR THAT COMPLIMENT YOU SNUCK IN THERE but also I’M PANIC at the thought of trying to answer this question lol?? I mean, this is the question for the ages, right? What makes a fic popular, and how do we boost the engagement with our own work?
Let me preface this reply by saying it is based just on my experiences and hypothesizing, and NOT on anything systematic. Trust me, I’d study this like a science if I could, but then I wouldn’t be writing. HAHA. Also, I’ll mostly focus on popularity on AO3 and not on Tumblr, since I would argue that I’m only “known as a writer” on Tumblr because people followed me here from AO3.
First of all, I want to highlight the fact that popularity does not equal quality, and vice versa. I’ve read some fics that are AMAZING but have little engagement. Some examples are Last Call by @galadrieljones (Ameridan/Lavellan) and this very short Fenris fic that I just read recently. On the other hand, I’ve tried to read some fics that are extremely popular with tons of hits/kudos/comments, but my judgmental ass thinks they’re poorly written and/or poorly characterized. There really is not a clear linear relationship between the quality of a fic and its popularity. (Anyone who is discouraged by the lack of engagement with their work: please keep this in mind.)
Another thing to consider: what do we even mean by popularity? On AO3, is the most popular fic the one with the most hits? The most comments? The most kudos? Even then, a longfic that’s been updated weekly for a year is going to have more hits than a completed oneshot, just by virtue of its length. Frequently updated fics will show up week after week in search results, since AO3’s search results show the most recently updated fics by default. So when I think about popularity… ehhh, I guess I’m thinking about a vague combination of all three of these things – hits, kudos, and comments – while keeping the length of the fic in mind. Given all of this, in the grand scheme of things, my DA fics really aren’t that popular. I didn’t actually do a search because I didn’t want to make myself sad, but if you search my DA pairings (e.g. Fenris/female Hawke) on AO3 by number of hits/comments/kudos, I won’t come up on the first few pages of search results. We’ll come back to the topic of search results later.
ANYWAY. Let’s pretend I’m relatively popular, leaving out the Big Names™ in DA fanfic (whom I won’t tag here because I don’t want to annoy them with a random tag lol). What do I think make my fics somewhat popular? I can think of four things:
Frequency of posting
The combination of fandom and pairing: filling a gap
Varying lengths of fics for a single pairing: something for everyone
I have no idea
Frequency of posting
The most obvious factor that jumps out to me is that I post regularly and frequently. Currently, I update my two ongoing longfics weekly or every other week. When I first got really heavily into Fenris/Rynne Hawke, I was updating almost every day. As I mentioned before, AO3’s search results are shown by the most recently updated fics by default. So if I’m posting regularly, that means my fic is regularly appearing at the top of the list of search results when people search my tags or pairings, which means a higher chance of new readers seeing it and deciding to dive in week after week.
Fandom and pairing: filling a gap
For this point, I’m going to call back to the fandom where I first became “well-known”, which is Horizon Zero Dawn. I’ve written a number of ships for that game, but my OTP is Aloy/Nil. My fic Stormbirds and Stalkers is the second most kudos’ed fic if you search for that pairing on AO3, and the #1 most kudos’ed fic if you exclude fics that are multi-ship (i.e. shipping Aloy with multiple people in a single fic, which is common in the HZD fandom). Importantly, this was a popular pairing in a very small fandom. There weren’t many fics for this pairing at the time, and there weren’t any fics that did what I was doing: a monogamous love story, with explicit smut, that was actually being updated.
Funnily enough, though, my second most popular fic in the HZD fandom is my fic for Aloy/Ikrie. This is an extreme rarepair even within a small fandom, with only 19 Aloy/Ikrie fics on AO3, but my fic for this pairing is the one with the most hits/kudos/comment and is also my one fic with the most subscribers on AO3. Clearly people were excited about this fic and wanted to see more of this pairing.
So what’s the logic here? A rarepair in a small fandom, a popular pairing in a small fandom… what’s the pattern? From what I can tell, a fic will be more popular if people are starved for that content. If a fic falls into that gap where people clearly want MOAR, but MOAR doesn’t yet exist, it’s going to get more engagement. Popular pairings in a small fandom fall perfectly into that gap, as do highly-coveted rarepairs with little existing content. A Dragon Age example of this is my little Cole/Lavellan romance fic. Colemances are quite rare, sexual ones even more so, and I think the reason for my Colemance fic’s popularity is because it fills that gap.
If we return to the rest of my Dragon Age fic, however… [nervous laugh] the logic I just outlined above doesn’t really apply. That takes me to the third factor.
Varying fic lengths for a single pairing: a little something for everyone
Most of my Dragon Age work is for the most popular pairings for the games I’ve played: FenHawke for DA2, and Solavellan for DA:I. (Yes, yes, Cullen is even more popular, but I’ll leave my Cullen/Inquisitor work out of this analysis because I think it’s a special case.) I’ve heard that it’s notoriously difficult to get engagement when you’re writing a popular ship for a bigger fandom, since readers get inundated with choice and your fic can get lost in the shuffle. I would in no way say I’m “popular” for the pairings I write, considering that the most popular Solavellan fics have like… tens of thousands of hits and thousands of comments. Still, I have been surprised and thrilled by the engagement I have gotten in this fandom, especially since I’m kind of a noob to the DA world.
One of the reasons my DA work might be relatively popular is that I write fics of varying lengths and types for my pairings. For Fen and Rynne in particular, I’ve got everything from non-smut oneshots to smutty oneshots to smutty longfics to AUs. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone, and I suspect that someone who was like “I just want a oneshot” might get interested enough by the one thing they read to check out my other work, even if they didn’t start out looking for more than a oneshot. Similarly for Solavellan, and also for Abelas/Lavellan, I’ve got oneshots and a multichapter drabble collection, so there’s something both for the people who are searching for a quick oneshot and for those who are searching for multichapter fics. In short: more variety means more potential to show up in AO3 search results.
Don’t get me wrong; some of my Dragon Age stuff has fallen flat, namely my Blackwall/Lavellan work. That was actually the first DA ship I ever wrote for. The smutty oneshot collection has been relatively popular in terms of hits and kudos, but the two little multichapter mini-fics I wrote for Baewall have had very little attention, and I don’t really know why. Baewall isn’t the most popular ship in the fandom, I know, but it still doesn’t really explain the popularity of the smutty oneshots versus the mini-fics, which are also smutty.
Which brings me to my final point…
I have no idea.
LOL. Seriously though. I’m sure there are other things at play that I’m not aware of, so maybe this can open a little discussion! What do you guys think? Any other theories on why some fics get more popular than others?
Thanks for the interesting ask, Elvenybae! I definitely spent too much time thinking about this today, LOL!! 😂 😘
- Love from your friendly neighbourhood Pikapeppa xoxo

a/n: I managed to fill both the anon prompt (Bellarke + Camping) and also fills one of my kiss meme prompts at the same time!
kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
In the grand scheme of life, Bellamy considers himself to be a pretty good boyfriend.
There have been times when he’s gone out in the middle of the night when his girl needed tampons or chocolate cake, sometimes both if that’s what she asked for. They have date night at least once a week and he’s gone to every Griffin-Kane family function since him and Clarke started dating.
And Clarke is a great girlfriend, don’t get him wrong. She rubs his shoulders while he grades papers and she makes him homemade chicken soup when he’s feeling under the weather.
But there is one thing that Clarke refuses to do that he loves and that’s camping.
It’s been a beautiful summer so far, never a day over ninety degrees. Basically the perfect weather for a camping trip. Nathan Miller, Bellamy’s close friend and the football coach at the high school he teaches at, calls him one morning in late July. Miller asks him if he and Clarke would want to plan a camping trip with some of the teachers and their families. Bellamy knows it’s a long shot but figures, what the hell, and leaves their bedroom to find his girlfriend.
Clarke is in their kitchen, one hand texting on her phone and the other stirring a spatula in a pan full of scrambled eggs, when Bellamy finds her.
“Morning, gorgeous.” He kisses a line from her ear to her neck and Clarke lets out a happy sigh.
“Good morning,” she says, leaning back into his chest. “Who was that on the phone so early?”
He drops one more kiss to the top of her head and heads towards the coffee pot. “It was Miller. Him, Jackson and the boys are going camping this weekend with some of the other teachers. He wanted to know if we wanted to come.”
Clarke groans. “Bell, you know I hate camping. It’s nothing but dirty sleeping bags and gross bugs. Not to mention sunburns and…”
“Babe,” Bellamy laughs. “Calm down, okay. I told him I’d ask you but that you’d probably say no.”
Clarke’s glare is fierce when she looks back at him. “You told him that?”
“Well…” Bellamy shrugs. “You hate camping. This isn’t really news.”
Her lips purse and twist. “Who all is going?”
“Miller, Jackson and the twins. Monty and Harper. Raven and Shaw. And probably Murphy and Emori, but Miller isn’t sure if she can get off work.”
Clarke sighs and leans against the counter so they are facing each other. “So, what you’re saying is basically everyone but us because I suck.”
Bellamy laughs and pulls her close to him by the front of her shirt. “Baby, no one thinks you suck. If you don’t want to go, we’ll find something else to do. It’s up to you.”
He can practically see the wheels turning in her head as she considers it. “We’re going.”
“Really?”
Clarke rolls her eyes and presses a kiss to his chin, which is the only part of his face she can reach without stepping on her toes. “Yeah, really. Let me know the dates and I’ll let the hospital know.”
He texts Miller to let him know that they will be coming and jumps on Amazon to find a tent worthy of his queen.
“This thing is ridiculous.”
Bellamy laughs as he stands back and admires the tent he put up just minutes before. It’s huge, with room for a queen size air mattress, and is so tall that he can stand in it without having to duck.
“Miller and Jackson don’t even have a tent this big and they have two kids!” Clarke nods to where Miller and Jackson are setting up their modest four person tent.
“Yeah, well. Their kids are only four so it’s not like they take up a lot of space.” Bellamy reaches for her hand and pulls her towards the opening of the tent.
He’s set up the inside for maximum comfort. There’s an outdoor rug on the ground, underneath a brand new air mattress that’s made up with her favorite blankets from home. Their beagle Ares is asleep at the foot of the bed, just like he does when they are at home.
“Looks like the pup is comfortable,” Clarke laughs, rubbing between the dog’s ears as she passes by him. “Bellamy, you didn’t have to do all of this.”
How this girl still doesn’t realize after years of being together that he’d do anything for her, he doesn’t understand.
“You didn’t have to come.” He puts his hands in her hoodie pocket and pulls her to him. “But you did and I love you for it. I just want you to be happy.”
She leans up on her toes to kiss him and right before he can deepen the kiss someone clears their throat.
“Uhh…sorry to interrupt but everyone is getting ready to go swimming.” Bellamy looks up to see Raven’s new boyfriend Shaw standing awkwardly at the entrance of their tent.
“We’ll be there in five,” Clarke tells him and Shaw nods and heads back towards the others. “Well, that was embarrassing.”
Bellamy drops a kiss to her forehead, then her nose and then down to her lips. “I know we don’t know him that well yet but I’m sure that’ll change after this weekend.”
He zips up their tent so they can change into swim suits and he tries not to stare when Clarke adjusts the top of her bikini. “You know you’re basically killing me, right?”
She just laughs, slips into a pair of black flip flops and tugs his arm out the door.
***
“So we’re down by six in the fourth quarter, fifty seven seconds on the clock. I know that it’s a Hail Mary call but I tell Stevenson to run the ball and what do you know, the kid fucking makes it!”
Bellamy chuckles as he listens to Miller’s story about the final football game of the year. He’s got his arm around Clarke and the neck of a cold beer bottle dangles between two fingers of his free hand. It’s a gorgeous night, not a cloud in the sky. You can’t see stars like this in the city and it reminds him of when he was a kid and him and his little sister Octavia would lie out in the backyard and trace the constellations with their fingertips.
Clarke yawns and curls up with her head on his shoulder. They spent the day laughing and swimming in the lake before barbequing burgers on the sand. Ares found a piece of wood that was bigger than him and dragged it all over. Miller and Jackson’s twin sons, Max and Jake, had a blast playing fetch with the dog and Bellamy has a hard time not thinking about what it would be like if he and Clarke had kids of their own.
“Getting sleepy, baby?” Bellamy presses a kiss to Clarke’s temple as she nods. “Let’s go to bed.”
He looks around the fire, at the friends he’s made over the past few years. Monty and Harper are cuddled by the fire and Raven and Shaw are making s’mores and laughing at a joke Murphy is telling. Murphy’s girlfriend Emori is asleep already, her sleeping bag pulled up next to the fire because she didn’t want to miss anything.
He loves these people, they are his family, and he’s happy to be here with them.
“We’re going to go to sleep,” he announces to the group and they all tell them goodnight in return. He finishes his beer and drops the bottle into a bucket they designated for recyclables before grabbing Clarke’s hand and leading her to their tent.
“I had fun today,” she says with another yawn. “I didn’t think camping could be this fun.”
Bellamy grins. “See what happens when you try new things?” He points up and Clarke follows the movement. “The top of the tent opens up to see the stars. There’s a screen, of course, so no bugs.”
She nods so he unzips it and then turns off the plastic lantern he brought in with them. He kisses her when its pitch black, the only light coming from the stars above them.
“This is so fucking romantic,” she says into his kiss and he snorts. “What?”
Bellamy shakes his head, even though he’s pretty sure she can’t see his face, and laughs as he kisses her again. “You’re just so adorable it kind of blows my mind.”
Her hands find his waist and she’s pushing his shirt up and over his head. “Shut up and kiss me.”
So that’s exactly what he does.

The Foolproof Immune-enhancing Plan That Cleanses And Purifies Your Body, While "Patching Up" Holes, Gaps, And Inefficiencies In Your Digestive System (And How To Do It Without Wasting $10+ Per "Meal")
Step 1: Soaking
By soaking grains correctly we can create an environment that starts to counteract anti-nutrients such as lectins and phytic acid.
The four conditions needed for proper soaking are:
1. Water/Moisture
2. A Slightly Acidic Medium
3. Warmth
4. Time
--->> A simple and effective way to this:
1. Pour Rice (or grain of choice) into a glass bowl
2. Cover with warm water (warmer than room temperature - 100 degrees or so is ideal)
3. Add 1 teaspoon of acidic medium, per cup of grains.
a. The acid medium can be either vinegar or lemon juice. Homemade whey can be used too. (I usually just use lemon juice)
4. Store at room temperature or warmer
5. Let it soak overnight (12-24 hours is ideal)
6. When you're ready to cook the grains, just throw out the acidic water, and rinse the grains in fresh water.
7. Drain and cook immediately, or let it sit for 1-3 days for better health benefits.
8. Enjoy your low anti-nutrient meal!
You'll notice I used rice as my example. This is because of all grains, rice is already low in anti-nutrients.
Health Tip: Brown rice is the bigger offender here since it has the whole bran/grain intact, thereby hoarding more anti-nutrients. It's not "bad" for you, but requires a little extra prep time for it to be best absorbed. White rice is surprisingly not so bad since it is simply the rice, stripped of the bran and all the anti-nutrients that come with it (it is the best, and one of the few "good" refined foods out there. Most Asian cultures, known for their longevity, will agree that white rice)
And a quick section on gluten: Many other grains (besides rice, quinoa, buckwheat, and millet) are problematic because of higher lectin/phytic acid content, or even worse, lots of gluten.
I have noticed tons of issues with gluten, especially with digestion/bloating and skin issues, so I eat them VERY rarely. (Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye...three foods I generally avoid like the plague, except for the occasional dark, fermented whole rye bread.)
The problem is well-documented in recent research, with gluten sensitivities causing a host of chronic illnesses, even for people who do not have celiac disease (gluten intolerance).
Gluten is now thought to be a major culprit in:
Weight retention and Fat Gain
Joint pain and Osteoporosis
Depression
Dementia, ADD and other mental function issues
Chronic Fatigue
These conditions are in addition to nausea, constipation, bloating and abdominal pain that is known to be a symptom of gluten sensitivity.
For this reason, I recommend that at a bare minimum you cut out gluten for 30 days.
This is easily achieved during the intro "Insulin Reset" phase I recommend for most overweight/obese types (eating protein, fats, and veggies with low carb intake).
I can just about GUARANTEE you will feel way better on an all-natural, grain-light, gluten-free diet.
And for the times when you choose to eat more grain-based foods in the "Primary Fat Loss" and "Leangevity/Maintenance" phases, just stick to the essentials that have been around for thousands of years.
*Think about it this way.*
Would you choose bread or rice?
Option #1: Whole Wheat Bread (upwards of 20 ingredients; full of sugar, industrialized fats, etc; made in a factory full of chemicals and toxins)
Option #2: Rice (1 ingredient; ZERO chemicals or pesticides when buying imported varieties; made in natural rice paddies)
I'll choose rice any day.
Also, please beware of "healthy foods" such as oats and sprouted breads. Oats are likely to have some gluten in them, and the packaged versions are loaded with sugar.
As for sprouted breads (Ezekiel is a popular brand), they're OK but many still are wheat-based, and gluten-rich. While the sprouting does reduce some anti-nutrients, isn't always enough.
Choose this over regular bread any day, but try to keep intake to a minimum in the grand scheme of things (1-2 slices a day, max. But preferably 1-2 slices or less every 3 days).
Putting breads aside, sprouting is a great option for beans, seeds, and other legumes.
Step 2: Sprouting
The process here can be more time consuming than just soaking, but is incredibly useful for better digestion, increased availability of vitamins and minerals, increased protein content, and decreased carb/starch content.
1. Soak beans overnight in water (about 8-12 hours)
2. Drain beans. Then rinse and drain again (tilt the container upside down so the draining can occur more efficiently)
3. Cover the bowl or container you're using, with a cheesecloth of muslin. Secure this with a rubber band/elastic band.
4. You'll see sprouts appear soon.
5. Continue to rinse and drain the beans twice a day for 3 days or so. (5 days max). You can rinse/drain through the cloth.
6. Once they've fully sprouted (no more than . inch), let them finish draining and store in the fridge or get cooking!
This process works great for beans, nuts, and other seeds (quinoa, amaranth, etc.).
Which brings us to the last similarity among traditional cultures: the consumption of lacto-fermented foods.
This is HUGE.
Step 3: Fermentation
Fermentation of fruits, vegetables, grains, and other foods allowed these cultures to store food for months on end. This was especially useful during cold, hard winters, or other times when important foods would be out of season.
Additionally, the fermentation process helped to remove the vast MAJORITY of anti-nutrients in grains and legumes.
Soaking and sprouting are steps in the right direction, but for *full wellness* benefits, fermentation does the trick.
The process also creates a surrounding atmosphere that is flowing with beneficial bacteria, which is VITAL for our intestinal health.
Once it enters our system, it can help kill off bad, poisonous bacteria, while promoting the growth of more healthy bacteria.
This is in addition to the fact that properly fermented foods can:
Vitamins B, C and K2 are especially enhanced through fermentation
Some well-known fermented foods that we know and love these days have been around for hundreds of thousands of years:
Pickles (fermented cucumbers)
Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage)
Kimchi (fermented, spiced cabbage)
Kefir, Yogurt, and other Cultured Milk Products
Kombucha (tea)
Alcohol (Beer, Wine, Brandy, etc.)
Please practice moderation. No more than 1 drink per day, if you must.
Sourdough Bread
There is one problem to keep in mind, though.
If you buy these foods in their packaged, store-bought versions, you're in for trouble.
The vast majority of fermented foods these days are tainted, due to cheap chemicals used in the fermentation process (especially with sauerkraut, kimchi, and pickled foods).
Additionally, manufacturers are quick to add in sugar or other harmful ingredients to fermented foods like yogurt and sourdough bread.
To make matters worse, most of the fermented foods purchase these days are sold in cans or plastic containers.
It is a BIG mistake to eat these foods, since plastic can leech out into the food. In fermented foods that are stored in cans, up to 90% of the vitamin C content is destroyed. The canning process also damages many heat-sensitive food enzymes.
---> In other words, you want to avoid commercially prepared and/or canned versions of fermented foods, at all costs.
Rather, you can ferment foods yourself! So many possibilities!
The process is actually quite simple (though it takes some practice to get it right, without spoiling the food).
I'll start you off with a simple recipe:
(Note: This recipe is from the outstanding book, Nourishing Traditions, by Sally Fallon)
Pickled Cucumbers
Ingredients:
4-5 pickling cucumbers or 15-20 gherkins
1 tablespoon mustard seeds
2 tablespoons fresh dill, snipped
1 tablespoon sea salt
4 tablespoons homemade whey (if not available, use an additional 1 tablespoon salt)
1 cup filtered water
Steps:
1. Wash cucumbers well and place in a quart-sized wide mouth jar.
2. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over cucumbers, adding more water if necessary to cover the cucumbers. The top of the liquid should be at least 1 inch below the top of the jar.
3. Cover tightly and keep and keep at room temperature for about 3 days before transferring to cold storage.
Lacto-fermentation is an anaerobic process (without oxygen), so make sure the container you use is airtight (quart-sized mason jars are great for this).
If oxygen gets in during the fermentation process, the final product will be ruined.
Cool? Cool.
Quick recap:
Today you've learned 3 of the most important things traditional cultures did to prepare and preserve their foods....soaking, sprouting, and fermenting.
These "smarty-pants" cultures intuitively (or through massive trial/error) knew how to enhance digestibility, remove anti-nutrients, boost the immune system, and improve gut health and inflammation....all with a few simple tweaks to food.
Use these tips in your kitchen today, and you just might be surprised by how great you start feeling!
