Architecture is a three-dimensional form of art that uses form, texture, space, color, repetition, variety, and emphasis to make a structure visually appealing on the inside and the outside (p. 387). In addition to making the building aesthetically pleasing, architects must consider what the function and purpose of the building they are designing is. Architects need to be knowledgeable about building codes, zoning regulations, and have the approval of planning committees (p. 389). They also need to make sure their buildings will stand to last; “buildings must not fall down” and “roofs must not leak” (p. 389).  Most buildings were originally created to provide shelter. Geography and climate need to be taken into consideration before deciding what materials to make a building with and the shape of the building and roof. For example, architects had originally attempted to copy building styles from Rome, in Russia. They used domed-roofs and porches supported by columns to make buildings, but they caved in from the weight of the snow (p. 390). Architects then created “a snow-shedding solution” by making an “onion” dome, intended to look like a flame, like the St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow (figure 13.6, p. 390-391).
Architecture differs from most art because the artist/architect has very little part in actually creating their artwork, instead other people usually do the actual constructing. An architecture’s artwork is based off of their ability to communicate their designs through detailed drawings, written instructions, and choosing the materials that will be used (p. 389). Similar to other three-dimensional artists, architects use their work to “manipulate people’s movements” (p. 392). Their work provides comfortable, realistic shelter, in addition to “organizing their activities three-dimensionally (p. 392). Architecture reminds a lot me of installation art, where the location is extremely important and the structure affects activities and feelings.
Maya Lin wanted to “take the idea of sculpture and grow it into a park.” When she took on the project of fixing up the park and skating rink, she didn’t realize that she would have to be an architect too. She had to create bathroom and pick out lights amongst other things. She takes the idea of considering geography, climate, and weather to another level. She turned the skating rink into something she calls, “the three stages of water,” which includes a mist fountain, a water fountain, and the skating rink (gas, liquid, solid). She wanted to bring the idea of the Grand Rapids back and made her design look like water rings. Her mind then went to astronomy and she made the rink look like a reflection of the night’s sky. When they looked down on the work from above, it was mesmerizing. It was calming, made the world seem small, and was very comforting. I think it embodied the idea of a park perfectly, a care-free place that allows you to escape from the real world.
Andrea Zittel is a relevant artist that is best known for her installation artwork and her use of the environment and her surroundings. She wants us to appreciate our surroundings, rely less on material objects, and inspect how we live. She focuses on everyday life and routine activities in her “A-Z Administrative Services.” In her piece “How to Live” the small, open building is surrounded by large stones and cut down trees. I think this shows that we take the beauty of nature for granted. Buildings were originally created for shelter and the little home shown only has a chair, a pillow, and a blanket. The cut down trees could have been used to make the structure of the house and the steps. It makes me realize that buildings were intended to keep us warm in cold weather, dry in wet weather, and cool in hot weather. I looked around my apartment and realized that most of what’s in it aren’t necessities. It made me realize that we take more than we need from nature. I think this piece differs from the other architects we read about because she does the absolute least in making this building flashy and it serves the one purpose of shelter.

im soo back
im actually leaving the house lately bc im moving officially for reals so i'm trying to take my furbs out with me sometimes
yeyy!!
i also have to limit my phone use bc of my joint pain so i've not been on furblr a lot lately
or anywhere tbh
but im back i just need to name my new buddy and make a cute sign for them to add to the intro post i rlly wanted to make for all of them
but i gotta think of a nameeeee
i kinda wanna add Lloyd to it, but was also thinking of adding Vertigo or Migraine to their name bc i'm inspired by Nausea the beautiful gorgeous orange furby
but idk yet i can't decide ahh i kinda want a long Distinguished name for the silly smol tiny creachur.
the longest name any of my furbies have is Fountain Mist Aesthetic Blog lol i really love her name <3 sadly my new room prob wont be the color Fountain Mist bc i think we are using a different brand this time so they have different names xD but it will still match, i can't wait to take cute pics of her in her new home!! hehe
