What is a Foundry And how it’s Being Cast
Foundries are essential for our modern living conditions and economic growth, but most of us think about them as little as none. What's a foundry, then?
A foundry is, in simple words, a factory where castings are made by melting metal, pouring molten metal into a mold and then allowing it to solidify. Even if you've never seen a foundry, or even knew what one looks like, you're surrounded by the metal castings they make. There's a fair chance you're less than 10 feet away from one reading this.
Foundries not only manufacture metal goods for the parts of engines, railroads, or tubing. They also shape machine components which are required to produce many of the important consumer goods on which we rely. Metal casting accounts for 90 per cent of all finished products.
THE CASTING Method You need to consider the casting process, in order to understand a foundry. Patternmaking, molding, grinding, mixing, ejection, washing, fettling and testing are the general measures involved in casting.
The final casting form refers to the mold in which it is poured, and molds are deliberately formed with a pattern-the material to be casted is a wood or metal copy. Although silica sand is the most common mold medium, it can be made from a variety of different materials based on the casting metal used and the process.
Charging is one of the foundry's most dangerous activities. Faults can be deadly.
A furnace to melt is "filled" with metal and heated past the melting point of the metal. If the molten metal has reached a particular pouring temperature, it is placed into a refractory lined steel pouring ladle from the furnace through a spout. Some slag or impurities are skimmed from the top of the base of the molten metal. Instead the ladle is tilted to spill molten metal into the cavity of a mould.
The mould cools until the metal solidifies, then the cast is expelled until removed from the pipe. The washed casting is done with fettling, a method that eliminates excess material from the casting for the final product to reach defined measurements. Fettling can be rapid and simple, or extremely detailed work, depending on the casting specifications. The foundry then inspects completed castings until they are shipped.
Foundries render not just bare castings. They house a variety of activities, mostly including component design, tool building, prototyping, machining, assembling and other after-sales facilities.
