hey! not sure if you’ve seen how they’ve changed the foundation application in the uk, but wanted to know what you think about allocations being done by an algorithm? Also, any advice of where to pick? currently trying to rank deaneries for fy1 lol
Hi anon,
Yes I saw that and I really don't think it was a good idea. The UKFPO are going to try and say it works because more people got their first choice this year than previously (75.42% compared to 71.02%) but actually the percentage of people getting one of their top 5 compared to 2023 was lower (94.99% compared to 92.40%) This means if you don't get your first choice with the new system, you're more likely to get one that was much lower down your list.
There were definitely problems with the previous system, and whatever system they use people are going to be disappointed and not be in their first choice. But with the previous system it did feel like you could have some control over your choice, by performing better at med school/in the SJT. Now I could do a whole post on the SJT and whether it's a good test but anyway, at least having something like the scores from the PSA/a national clinical exam in final year to rank people gives them something to aim towards to increase their chances of getting to where they want to be
I guess it does allow people to get into very competitive deaneries who are perfectly good doctors but just don't perform as well in exams, but also there's only a certain number of spaces in those deaneries and a random allocation doesn't make it any more likely that people who would have previously ranked lower would get in, because there's still going to be A LOT of people ranking it highly, perhaps even more now, because some people who might have thought they 'didn't have a chance' will have ranked it higher if that makes sense haha
One thing to say is the 2 years go SO quickly, so if you do get somewhere you didn't want, it's not going to be long before you can look for jobs elsewhere/apply for specialty and try to get to a different deanery.
In terms of where to pick, there's lots of considerations and it's about deciding what's important to you
where you went to medical school - staying in the same deanery as your med school means that you might be familiar with the hospitals which can help ease you into foundation, plus if your friends are staying then this is really good for support because F1 can be tough
where your family are - again if family are a good support system for you then being near them can help!
what the training is like there - i'm fairly sure somewhere there's results comparing the foundation schools based on the national training survey, but remember all the deaneries will have a variety of hospitals - tertiary, DGH, some will have more rural things as well depending on what you want you'll have a big choice of jobs to rank once you know what deanery you're in
Hope this helps! let me know if you have any more questions, and if anyone wants to add to this feel free
Good luck with final year :)

also its so dumb that one of the arguments ppl have against a sims 5 is that theyve already invested too much money into 4. like yes its fucking scummy that ea charges so much for dlc and its Ludicrous the amt sims 4 costs if you have all the dlc and its going to keep getting more and more expensive but . to be honest . why are you paying for sims packs. im sry
#ik not everyone can pirate i get it and its your money do what you want#but itis your choice to invest so much into like. a sinking ship DJRNFJFNG. idk....#i want 2 be optimistic and believe that somehow they WILL be able to fix every single issue with ts4#but i honestly believe thats require them to take an extended break from releasing new packs and shit#and i genuinely honestly dont think theyll do that. lol.#but like. i think itd be a good idea like. Cut down on new releases and focus on fixing the base game and then pack refreshes#bc itd be rly cool to have like. pack refreshes to make them more fleshed out#but also like. sigh. it rly does come down to the packs bc i judt genuinely find it kind of disgusting how little is in each pack#and how many of the packs could be consolidated#genuinely earnestly feel like growing together and parenthood shouldve been one pack. like. and honestly throw hsy in there...#hsy could do with a refresh Badd ik its fairly new but oh my god the school is so fucking buggy#and in general like. IDK. id rly love the packs to be refreshed and id love love love More fucking lots in the worlds oh my god. multiple#worlds have literally 4 lots. Thats fucking actually insane it makes me crazy#i get like. ooh bc you can travel between worlds the worlds can be smaller but i hate it 😭😭😭#i think its just bc i grew up playing 3 perhaps but like. i rly loved like. idk when i choose to play in a sims world i want to play in tha#world. i dont want to have to like. i live in moonwood mills (5 lots .) and thej i have to go to like. san myshunonif i want to go to a bar#or whatever. is there a bar in san myshuno idr#IDKIDK. i feel like Innnn my opinion there should be like. at least 1 of the basegame lot types for every world maybe with some exceptions#and there should be enough empty slots ppl can fill it out more if they want...#but also like. idk. i suppose it wouldnt affect me much bc i usually stay on my home lot as much as possible#bc of the loading screens#it wouldnt be so bad if like. idk. i understand why they didnt wanna do open world like ts3#well i dont its fucking actually stupid. but i get that ts4 wasnt supposed to be what it is and it wasnt built to be a longrunning game.#hence why ts5 should happen instead as a Strong Foundation BUT WHATEVER but like. yk. and ik im not the only person in the world and other#ppl want different but i feel like maybe you could have options .. idk. im not a programmer#but itd be cool to have some sort of way to toggle between like. open world semi open world and closed world#where itd be like. ts3 style where the exteriors of everything r there but the interiors r loaded in when u visit (if that is how ts3 works#i may be a bit off) nd closed would be ts4 style Loading screen to go . next door#am i misremembering or are there even loading screens between like. the new apartments with forrent.... there were for the city living ones#skull Fuckk i ran out of space

this person doesn't even particularly seem to understand what IQ tests have to do with eugenics (though I totally would get what they are trying to say here if the other examples would make any sense at all), but someone claiming that the MBTI test and the HOGWARTS HOUSE TEST were designed to group people into hierarchies so we can kill or eradicate certain groups has got to be the most insane thing ive read this morning

I'm a big fan of wizards-as-programmers, but I think it's so much better when you lean into programming tropes.
A spell the wizard uses to light the group's campfire has an error somewhere in its depths, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The wizard spends a lot of his time trying to track down the exact conditions that cause the failure.
The wizard is attempting to create a new spell that marries two older spells together, but while they were both written within the context of Zephyrus the Starweaver's foundational work, they each used a slightly different version, and untangling the collisions make a short project take months of work.
The wizard has grown too comfortable reusing old spells, and in particular, his teleportation spell keeps finding its components rearranged and remixed, its parts copied into a dozen different places in the spellbook. This is overall not actually a problem per se, but the party's rogue grows a bit concerned when the wizard's "drying spell" seems to just be a special case of teleportation where you teleport five feet to the left and leave the wetness behind.
A wizard is constantly fiddling with his spells, making minor tweaks and changes, getting them easier to cast, with better effects, adding bells and whistles. The "shelter for the night" spell includes a tea kettle that brings itself to a boil at dawn, which the wizard is inordinately pleased with. He reports on efficiency improvements to the indifference of anyone listening.
A different wizard immediately forgets all details of his spells after he's written them. He could not begin to tell you how any of it works, at least not without sitting down for a few hours or days to figure out how he set things up. The point is that it works, and once it does, the wizard can safely stop thinking about it.
Wizards enjoy each other's company, but you must be circumspect about spellwork. Having another wizard look through your spellbook makes you aware of every minor flaw, and you might not be able to answer questions about why a spell was written in a certain way, if you remember at all.
Wizards all have their own preferences as far as which scripts they write in, the formatting of their spellbook, its dimensions and material quality, and of course which famous wizards they've taken the most foundational knowledge from. The enlightened view is that all approaches have their strengths and weaknesses, but this has never stopped anyone from getting into a protracted argument.
Sometimes a wizard will sit down with an ancient tome attempting to find answers to a complicated problem, and finally find someone from across time who was trying to do the same thing, only for the final note to be "nevermind, fixed it".

MDX Dubai offers over 70 UK degree programmes and professional qualifications and as the largest UK 5-Star KHDA rated university, it stands out as a leader in British education.
Some high school students are ready to begin their journey to university at an earlier stage: This is where the Middlesex University Dubai International Foundation Programme (IFP) comes into play. As a 120-credit programme, it provides you with the required skills for entry into one of our undergraduate programmes. In addition, it helps you to transition from high school to university by teaching the use of academic conventions, fostering a learner-centred environment and encouraging independent learning. You will also develop transferable skills in your chosen subject area along with communication and problem-solving skills.
You are given the opportunity to try out a range of different subjects offered at Bachelor’s level at MDX Dubai, developing foundational knowledge so that you can easily continue to undergraduate study in your chosen subject.
International Foundation Programme (IFP)
The IFP Programme is aimed at students with intermediate to advanced levels of English, who have completed high school with good grades but would like to improve their study skills to meet the entry requirements for an undergraduate programme at MDX Dubai.
The programme is divided into a number of fulfilling and diverse core units, during which you will gain the academic writing and research skills necessary for study at undergraduate level. You will gain transferable linguistic skills that will support you to successfully complete the other IFP modules. You will also be introduced to higher level thinking skills through critical and lateral thinking exercises, along with time management and independent learning skills. Incorporating one-to-one Academic Advising and support, which aims to build your confidence in readiness for undergraduate studies. The maths module covers introductory areas of mathematics including numbers, algebra, data collection and statistics in a structured and supportive environment. Software will be used to demonstrate real world situations.
Following these core modules, you will be introduced to your chosen pathway, which will be selected from the following options: Business, Law and Politics, Psychology, Media and Film, Art and Design, Computer Science, Technology and Engineering. Each module successfully provides a taster introduction to each programme, equipping you with excellent foundations for further study.
The benefits of studying our IFP are numerous: You will develop academic language skills, and essential independent learning skills. You will gain comprehensive in-person and online support and can connect with both faculty and students on potential future degree programmes. Graduates of the IFP have gone on to become some of our most successful students.
Careers linked to all 6 specialisations are numerous, and the pathways are offered based on global market employment need, ensuring a successful career launch.
Dr Louise Edensor, Head of the International Foundation Programme said: “Having the opportunity to experience life at university before beginning an undergraduate degree is a brilliant opportunity for any school student, in the UAE or beyond. This is a chance to step onto campus, learn academic skills, trial a specific subject you are interested in and meet new friends, all before you commit to your undergraduate degree. With an IFP under your belt, you’re guaranteed entry to one of Middlesex University Dubai’s amazing undergraduate programmes.”
Launchpad for a Successful Future
Most of the MDX Dubai IFP alumni’s have gone on to study an MDX Dubai undergraduate programme in order to prepare for a career in their chosen industry, or even further their studies at postgraduate level.
Former MDX Dubai IFP student Hadia Iman chose the Psychology pathway, and said of her experience: “IFP has sharpened my skills in so many ways and has laid the perfect groundwork for my upcoming years of study. The course not only focuses on classes for a specific major but also on essay writing, referencing, critical thinking, etc, which has helped me polish myself in a way other fields of study could perhaps not. Middlesex has become a safe haven for me and I look forward to spending the rest of my years here. My grades speak for themselves I think, I have never excelled in my studies as much as I did studying this course!”

Local communities learn about the cooperative model in Lao People's Democratic Republic.
Tumblr media
The ILO organized training workshops for district officers, vocational teachers and students and cooperative members in Attapeu province, Lao PDR utilizing its Think.COOP and Start.COOP packages.
Three workshops using ILO’s training tools, Think.COOP and Start.COOP, were held in Attapeu Province on 29 February and 1 March 2024, by the ILO in collaboration with COOP Okinawa, Japan International Labour Foundation (JILAF) and Lao Federation of Trade Unions (LFTU).
Around 75 participants from the Attapeu Department of Industry and Commerce, vocational training educators and students, and members of Lao’s rice whiskey producing cooperative Lao-Lao took part in the workshop. Representatives from JICA Laos and Okinawa also joined as observers. The training sessions used select modules of Think.COOP and Start.COOP tools to help participants learn about the benefits of collective action, principles of cooperatives and rights and responsibilities of cooperative members.
Ms. Heejin Ahn, Technical Officer in ILO Bangkok stated in her presentation that ILO is the only specialized agency of the United Nations with an explicit mandate on cooperatives. Ms. Ahn gave an overview of ILO’s support for cooperative policy development, where over 100 countries have used the Promotion of Cooperatives Recommendation, 2002 (No. 193) to develop and revise cooperative policies and laws. Ms. Ahn also provided an overview of the Our.COOP tools, including Think.Coop, and Start.Coop, developed for people interested in setting up, launching, or joining a cooperative.
Mr. Ishihara from COOP Okinawa quoted the origins of the cooperative idea in Lao PDR as “If you share it, there will be more; if you compete for it, it will never be enough”. An official of the Attapeu Department of Industry and Commerce noted that “This training helped me put into words what I have been practicing all along. Now I can share this knowledge with others.”
Participants visited the cooperative’s production facility of the Lao-Lao (Lao’s rice whiskey) in Xai Village, Attapeu Province. The ILO will continue raising awareness and strengthen cooperative development by conducting trainings using Our.COOP tool with COOP Okinawa, JILAF and LFTU.
The training was conducted jointly by two projects; ILO’s Building Youth Capacity and Network in Asia-Pacific project, which aims to empower 50,000 youth and vulnerable people using sustainable, scalable and impactful training tools in countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Lao PDR; and COOP Okinawa’s Project which aims to support the establishment of cooperatives in Attapeu Province. Both projects are funded by the Government of Japan.
