The DTC Blues
I remember the 1990s, when the internet was the wild, wild west. Entrepreneurs, flush with tech know-how and investor money, but not a whole lot of marketing sense, launched a wide variety of dotcoms. The common thinking was that virtually anything could be sold online, from furniture to 50-pound bags of dog food, wheelbarrows, and potting soil.
Why not? Folks had seen Amazon take off in the virtual world, and they wanted a piece of the action, too.
The dotcom bubble burst around the turn of the century, and many of those start-ups crashed and burned. The lesson learned was that, just be cause you can, doesn’t always mean you should.Skip forward to the last few years, when COVID found all of us shopping from home, and a new wave of dotcom darlings started to flourish. These were different from the 1990s start-ups, though, in that they were DTC—Direct To Consumer—brands that sold only via their website. These corporate verticals did everything from manufacturing to marketing and retailing.
The problem is that it is very hard to establish a brand in the virtual space these days. Yes, Amazon did it, as have others. But Amazon is selling other people’s products, complemented by its own private label merch. Today’s DTCs face the uphill battle of entering consumer choice sets, remaining top-of-mind, and then making the sale.
No small task, and last year saw many DTCs file for bankruptcy. The outlook for 2024 is not good either.
Perhaps the best chance a DTC has of survival is to add BAM locations, but that takes money and management skills, something they are often lacking. Inventories must be held at each location, further increasing the costs of doing business.
But those storefronts may be the only way to build brand recognition. Retail is a crowded space on a good day, and if you reside only behind the invisible wall of the internet, even the best laid SEO and keyword buys can still fall short.
Eyewear seller Warby Parker has found success by adding stores. In the process, though, price savings to customers have shrunk. But the company is still around. It’s better than facing a protracted death scene like Peloton is enduring.
Peloton, the maker of expensive stationary bikes and treadmills, scored high during COVID. We couldn’t go to the gym, so we bought our own equipment. But with COVID restrictions behind us, the market for home exercise equipment has cratered. To the company’s credit, they retooled and started focusing more on workout software subscriptions, distribution through Dick’s Sporting Goods and Amazon, and product placement in every Hilton hotel property. But it most likely still will not be enough.
Never mind that home exercise equipment is, for most people, just an aspirational purchase. They wind up being covered in clothes or dust.
The DTC that gets discussed the most is Wayfair, the online home goods retailer. Even though they have been around since 2002, they have showed many signs of being vulnerable. And with 14 million different products, they might just collapse under the weight of their inventory.
The Wayfair business model is a classic. Basically, by being available only online, they could afford to sell at much cheaper prices. Stir in their own private label goods, and you have something that, on paper at least, looks and smells a lot like Amazon. But no matter how much advertising Wayfair has done in the last few years, they are still having trouble attaining top-of-mind status.
It is when you read the dire reports of DTCs that you begin to appreciate just how fortunate Amazon is. Jeff Bezos built a brand name from scratch, the same thing all these DTCs are trying to do. It’s just that he did it early enough in the internet era that it caught everyone’s attention. Launch a new DTC today and watch the people yawn. It’s not buzz worthy these days.
Of course, this doesn’t mean there won’t be successes in the years ahead. Someone will come along and show us how to be a DTC darling, how to break through the clutter and become a household word, how to make money at every step along the way. It won’t be easy, though.
Meanwhile, hope springs eternal in the human breast, and we will continue to see entrepreneurs willing to give it a go anyway, caution be damned. Because if you can survive long enough to pass through these choppy waters, there’s gold on the other side. Just don’t bet the farm on it too early, though.

Why You Need To Forget Everything You’ve Heard About “Location, Location, Location”

It used to be that location meant everything. Covid-19 has changed that.
For instance, if you were looking to buy a Subway franchise, you were told that “the location is key.” For the most part it was. In fact, choosing a good great location for your franchise business has always been a crucial piece of the puzzle.
Note: investing in a franchise is a fairly complex undertaking. It’s definitely one that should be done with the help of experts.
Speaking of experts, most franchisors that require a location have a dedicated real estate person on staff (sometimes an entire department). Their job is to help you find suitable property to lease for your new franchise business. And they’re probably experts at it.
With that in mind, you should know that they usually have real estate contacts in local markets. However, it’s likely that they don’t know your area like you do.
In view of that, it’s important for you to listen to their ideas. At the same time, you need to remember that ultimately, both parties (you and your franchisor) need to agree on the location. In other words, you do have some leverage.
Equally important, and a point often overlooked, is the fact that the franchisor needs the location to be an excellent one. That’s because the better the location, the better the chances are that the franchisee (you) will make money.

In franchising, the more money the franchisee makes, the more money the franchisor makes.
It’s Survey Time
The Washington Post and the University of Maryland just did a survey about consumer shopping habits. The results are ugly.
They found that while a majority of consumers (56%) are comfortable shopping in a grocery store, 67% are not comfortable with the idea of going into a retail clothing store and 78% don’t want to go into a restaurant for a sit-down meal. Feel me?
The results of another survey, this one focused on retail space, stated that “more than 15,000 stores could shutter in 2020, far surpassing 2019’s record 9,548 closures.” I’m actually convinced that number is going to be higher, but let’s stick with theirs for now.
Some Cold, Hard Facts About “Location, Location, Location”
To begin with, It’s no secret that Amazon, and to some extent, Wayfair, and the like, have been hammering the crap out of retail stores. Even so, the potential store closure numbers above are off the charts.

As if that’s not enough, rising rents and more competition have made it tougher for more than a few retailers and food franchise businesses to gain enough market share to be profitable.
In view of that, my question to you is this:
Are “locations” as important as they were a few, short months ago?
It’s something to ponder.
How Important Is Location In An Amazon, Covid-19 World?
Without question, if you’re buying a franchise that requires a commercial space, location is still important. But, again, is it as important as it was last year… or even a few months ago?
Suddenly, it depends on the type of business it is. How weird is that?
For example, if you own a pizza franchise like Domino’s, where delivery is the focus, your location isn’t that important. It just needs to be easy for your employees to get to. Case-in-point: they can’t hire delivery drivers fast enough!
So if you’re interested in buying a food franchise with serious delivery revenue-like Domino’s or Little Caesar’s, instead of looking for space in a high-visibility strip center, you may permitted to investigate alternative (and cheaper) locations to setup your business.
Franchise Location Alternatives
One idea for your franchise location; rent space in a secondary strip center. It would be less visible, but it shouldn’t matter that much.
Better yet, you could take a look at putting your store in a light industrial park. As long as it was easily accessible for your drivers and the few customers who would pick up their food themselves, it should work.
As a result, you should be able to reduce the cost of rent. That means more money for you!
Finally, what about sit-down restaurants?
In a nutshell, full-service restaurant franchises, like Eggs Up Grill, are a different story.
I say that because most full-service restaurants may not have full dining rooms again for a while-because of social distancing guidelines. That’s horrible news for franchisees who’ve invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into these franchises.
That said, if you’re the owner of a full-service food franchise, there are two things you can do to try to keep your business afloat until things change.
Sit down with your accountant and go through all of your expenses, line-by-line. Get them down to the bare minimum, and then go back and chop them more.
Call the CEO of your franchise.
The reason you need to do make that call is to see if you can work something out.
Maybe you can negotiate a lower monthly royalty, or even a complete royalty payment waiver for a set amount of time. Believe me, your franchisor does not want to see you go under, as it’s not a good look for the company.

Are You Still Bound And Determined To Purchase A Retail Franchise Or A Food Franchise?
If you’ve been leaning towards franchise opportunities that require a physical location, have you started to change your thinking a bit? If so, I certainly can’t blame you. But wait. There may be an opportunity for you here.
Namely, have you thought about the fact that commercial space is going to be plentiful in the coming months?
Translation: if there’s a lot of empty retail space around, landlords are going to deal more. With that in mind…
I hereby decree that the law of supply and demand is now in force.
What does that mean for you?
In a nutshell, cheaper rent.
Imagine for a moment how nice it would be if you could score a prime piece of super-visible space that normally goes for $8,000 a month…for only $5000 a month?
If that happened, you just lowered your expenses 25%. That’s huge! Think about what you could do* with that money?
*I would take some of it and invest in marketing. But that’s me.
The bottom line?
If you purchase a location-based franchise this year, chances are rather good you’ll be paying less for it. Plus, you’ll have more choices.
This Needs To Be Said
It’s a fact that (some) property owners have had a reputation for being rather difficult to deal with.
Not only that, some of the prices they’ve been charging over the years for their commercial spaces have been outrageous. It’s not a good combination.
Is it any wonder that retail and restaurants close so often?
Tip: Make sure you hire an attorney who’s familiar with commercial leases. They’re wordy, complicated, and they totally favor the landlord.

Case Study: IKEA and the Morality of Fast Furniture
Section 1: Introduction
Writer Helen Edwards defines fast furniture as; furniture that was ‘made for a season…often made from poor quality materials like particle board and will be tossed into landfill within a short time.’
For too long, fast furniture has been overshadowed by the looming threat of fast fashion. Though the two are extremely similar and hold an equal threat to the health of our planet, the production of cheap and trendy furniture has had minimal coverage compared to its partner in crime.
The common mentality of ‘more, faster, cheaper’ has helped put our planet and eco system at risk. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that by the year 2030, the negative impact on our planet could be irreversible.
Brands such as World Market and Wayfair have dominated in sales and helped push our environmental state closer to dangerous levels of damage.
In this essay I want to discuss the biggest furniture brand on the market, IKEA. Which leads me the question I wish to answer: is IKEA a moral company?
Section 2: The Dark Side of IKEA
Everybody knows IKEA. Your local, friendly furniture store that sells stylish and trendy decor at a low and reasonable price. With the number of visits to IKEA stores worldwide from 2010 to 2020 reaching a whopping 825million, IKEA has easily established itself as one of the leading brands of the home decor industry.
IKEA states its concept as a company is to ‘offer a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low, that as many people as possible will be able to afford them.’ Which, on its own, is a good stance from a business point because of its inclusivity to lower income families. However, there is a point were cheapness in price meets cheapness in quality.
The most common resource IKEA uses is a material particle board, which is made from woodchips held together with resins at a high temperature and pressure, wrapped in a plastic coating. In theory, this is great resource as it uses scrap wood to create something new. Unfortunately, this material isn’t very durable and breaks easily, making it counterproductive for users as its lifespan is so short, they will have to keep wasting money on new products. The cheap quality found in IKEA products makes it hard to reuse or resell them, leading to the only way to get rid particle board, incineration. This then adds to the emission of carbon dioxide into the earth’s atmosphere, increasing global warming.
During the 80’s it was reported that IKEA was using high levels of formaldehyde in its products, some over the legislation allowance. This leads to a negative impact on not only the people using the product, but also the environment.
Section 4: The Bright Side of IKEA
Coming into the case study, I thought I would find lots of negative coverage on IKEA, I thought I would discover multiple articles discussing their negative affect on the environment and their unsustainable business methods.
However, I found myself scrounging for those articles and when I looked at the overall attitude of this company, I was pleasantly surprised with all of the positive contributions they have made to better themselves and reduce their impact on the planet.
They are very outspoken about this pressing issue and even have multiple sections on their website listing everything they’re doing to improve.
In 2014, Wrench & Wood News stated that ‘IKEA is likely the world’s largest single consumer of wood using a staggering 1% of the world's wood every year.’ At the time, 25% of IKEA’s wood was sustainably sourced and FSC certified. Since last year, IKEA stated ‘by the end of 2020, we aim for all our wood to come from more sustainable sources including FSC certified and recycled wood. Today we have reached more than 91% of our goal.’
The brand has also become more environmentally conscience and made promises such as only using recycled and renewed materials by the year 2030, cutting down on water waste and reducing energy consumption.
Section 5: My Thoughts
I have mixed feelings when it comes to this company. On one hand I think IKEA’s usage of cheap and flimsy materials such as particle board encourages their customers to buy into the toxic mentality of ‘more is more’.
However, on the other hand, I think how IKEA responds to an issue as important as the environment is a fine example of how all companies should conduct themselves and put sustainability first. This not only creates a good company image for themselves but also takes a step in the right direction in encouraging other companies to think about the future and take care of the planet we inhabit.
Overall, there are clear good and bad sides of IKEA. However, I think when any brand continuously tries to better themselves to encourage sustainability, it should be celebrated. Therefore, I will continue to support at IKEA for as long as they plan to help the planet rather than hinder it.
So, to answer my question; I would say yes. Despite their poor use of materials, I consider IKEA a moral brand because of their mind set to do everything in their power to nurture the planet and make the right choices.

I placed the order about 1pm.... at 3:30pm I got an email saying it had been shipped! Like what the fuck?! I’ve never had something shop that quickly!

Showrooming shoppers cost UK High Street £18bn in sales each year
High Street retailers need to harness showrooming or lose out
Research reveals that bricks and mortar stores are losing out on more than £18 billion in sales each year as consumers find products instore, before leaving and purchasing online.
With 74% of UK shoppers admitting to browsing a product in-store before purchasing online, high-street stores have a fight on their hands to convert showrooming consumers into instore sales.
The findings from leading retail job board RetailChoice have revealed that while one third (32%) of shoppers are showrooming once a month, one in ten (12%) are doing so once a week. With the average consumer having spent £467 through showrooming in the last year and more than half (53%) stating they enjoy browsing products instore, even with no intention to buy, there’s lots to be gained by retailers who can encourage those potential buyers to make instore purchases.
Unsurprisingly, purchasing behaviours change between products as consumers feel the need to go instore for furniture (41%), scented products (40%) and jewellery (39%) whereas electronics (38%) and home appliances (32%) are usually bought online. In order to best address and serve these inter-changing behaviours, retailers need to understand how to maximise and utilise staff, instore experiences and initiatives to generate and maximise sales.
Despite the top ask from consumers to retail staff being for them not to be pushy (48%), Retail Choice’s research has revealed that, generally, consumers not only value retail staff but want more from them. Consumers value face to face interactions with store staff, with over half of Brits (57%) more likely to spend money in a store if staff are friendly and approachable. However, shoppers would also like retail staff to have knowledge of the products available (42%) and a willingness to listen (28%).
Oliver Wren at RetailChoice explains: “The Christmas period is arguably the most important time of the year for UK retailers, so it’s essential that stores are able to convert as many browsing customers into happy purchasers as possible. Despite everything we hear about the ‘death of the high street’, bricks and mortar stores have a winning card to play – their workforces – who are championed by British consumers.”
Wren adds: “What’s more, 51% of shoppers are more likely to spend instore if staff are passionate and knowledgeable. Making sure that staff are well trained and confident in talking to customers about the products available to purchase in store will help bricks and mortar stores to better meet the demands of shoppers who may well be inundated with the number of products now available instore and online.”
Andrew Goodacre, CEO of the British Independent Retailers Association, says: “Independent retailers are incredibly well placed to tackle the effects of showrooming. By offering a level of service that consumers can’t get anywhere else, shops can advise and support customers with their purchases, getting to know them by name and offering product suggestions most suited for them.”
He concludes: “Most independent retailers run their businesses because they have a passion for what they sell, they will have tried and tested the products themselves, so there is a level of trust you can expect when shopping with them. There is a misconception that bricks and mortar retailers are more expensive than online, however, they can be incredibly competitive and you have the added benefit of taking the product home there and then, without the added cost of delivery.”
What does that mean for Christmas
Looking ahead to the upcoming Christmas period, recent RetailChoice research revealed that more than half of Christmas-celebrating Brits (55%) say they will buy the majority of their Christmas gifts this year online. These tech-savvy shoppers argue that online shopping offers better convenience (58%), the option to have shopping delivered straight to their door (46%) and there being better deals to be found online (44%).
Despite this, e-commerce brands, such as Boohoo and Wayfair, have recently announced that they will launch high-street pop up shops during the festive season this year. These brands might not be far off the mark, as two-fifths of shoppers (40%) will hit the high street for most of their Christmas gifts, as 67% of in store shoppers want to see products before purchasing and 56% purchase instore so they have the product right away.
Men are leading the charge on weekly showrooming, with 17% practicing the trend at least once a week, compared to just 9% of women. Men also report spending more than women do, with the average male having showroomed to the value of £594.10 in the last year, compared to the £332.90 spent by women. Shockingly, this means that every pound spent by a woman equates to £1.78 spent by men.
Last year, Bloomberg reported that women drive 70-80% of all consumer purchasing, whether that’s women making more purchases or influencing someone else’s purchase. But why are women such powerful consumers?
Interestingly, men are less likely to be popping down to pop-up stores opened by typically online stores - 46% of men state they would visit on these stores, compared to 60% of women. While this may be due to 59% of women enjoy browsing products in store, even without having any intention to buy, compared to 48% of men, the top reason women cite for wanting to visit these stores are to check the quality of products before purchasing. Men, on the other hand, are on the hunt for bargains, with men most likely to visit these stores if the products were cheaper than online - potentially signposting why they’re spending more online after having spotted a product instore at a faster rate than women.

Burrow - Making Everyone Comfortable but the Competition
“Does anyone know what JAND is?” Stephen Kuhl and Kabeer Chopra were in Ethan Mollick’s entrepreneurship class at Wharton in 2016 and had no idea what JAND was or what could possibly be contained in the powerpoint professor Mollick was waving in front of the class. It happened to be the initial pitch for Warby Parker, a leader among direct-to-consumer brands -- something they would come to know quite a lot about, soon enough. Stephen and Kabeer’s class project would snowball into a ride through Ycombinator and on to become the rapidly emerging direct-to -consumer sofa business -- Burrow.
Sofas are a huge pain. If you want something fast, it’s going to be cheap and flimsy, and you’re going to spend the weekend with an allen wrench, wood dowels, and an instruction manual that may as well be in Swedish. If you want something nice, it’s going to take forever to ship, let alone the difficulty of getting it through the door, in the room, and settled on the floor.
It was no different for founders Stephen and Kabeer. Kabeer went to West Elm and found a sofa he liked for twelve-hundred dollars, but it would take twelve weeks to arrive. If he picked something that was in stock, they could deliver it for two-hundred and fifty dollars in two weeks. Fortunately, he lived next door, so he went back to his apartment, retrieved a dolly and wheeled it back himself. Meanwhile, Stephen spent six-hundred dollars and the greater part of the weekend learning Swedish.
Burrow was born out of Stephen and Kabeer’s frustration with exactly these problems. No one sold a sofa that was comfortable, stylish, easily shipped, high-quality, and available, quickly. The market, as they saw it, was broken.
The founders went to Ycombinator the summer of 2016 and started taking preorders. They developed a novel, modular design that incorporated premium materials and finishes but wouldn’t require an expensive logistics and trucking system to get a monolithic sofa to the curb, up the stairs and to the floor. The design would culminate in a sofa that achieved the same quality standards as Crate & Barrel, but could be shipped in pieces that could be assembled quickly and intuitively. By the second half of 2016, they had more than one thousand preorders. It turns out, the customer shared their frustrations.
But there was a problem. No one wanted to work with them. Stephen and Kabeer wanted to make sofas, merchandise them online, and ship them in a week. There were more than one-thousand people who agreed with them, and they were expecting their sofas by October 2016. The big manufacturers in North Carolina and throughout the South practically laughed them out of the room. They were built for large volumes, long lead times, and traditional designs. The prospect of retooling a manufacturing line to accommodate a thousand orders seemed more like a favor than a business proposition. By some fluke, they had a Wharton connection whose family friend owned a manufacturer in Mexico.
Delays meant Burrow wouldn’t be able to meet their fall delivery deadline. They couldn’t deliver until December, at the earliest. It was bad news, and Stephen and Kabeer were worried they would disappoint their customers, so they decided to reach out to them. They called and emailed everyone who had preordered the sofas, so they could explain the situation. Thinking it was just some big, faceless manufacturer, they were surprised to speak with Stephen or hear from Kabeer and learn that it was just the two of them at the helm, raising the sails, cleaning the decks, and steering the ship. Some took their money back; others were grateful for the consideration and encouraged them to sail on.
And they were sailing with a strong tail-wind. Millennials account for over forty-percent of all furniture spending. They expect fast and free shipping and online shopping. One-third of people in their twenties move every year, according to Burrow’s research. Online furniture shopping is only 15% of the $111b furniture industry, but it’s growing at 20% a year. Demand for Burrow wasn’t a fluke. It was exactly where the market was heading.
By April 2017 Burrow was delivering sofas within a week. They rapidly outgrew the Mexican manufacturing partner in mid-2017. It was time to go back to the manufacturers who had rejected them before. Stephen set out for a few weeks on the road with the Mississippi Development Authority. It turns out that the legacy of the Russian immigrant, Morris Futorian, had set the stage for a strong, sophisticated furniture manufacturing base in Mississippi, and the Development Authority was more than happy to share it with Stephen.
The so-called University of Futorian comprised the many generations of entrepreneurs and craftsmen who emerged from Futorian’s workshops and factory in New Albany, Mississippi. Morris Futorian moved from Chicago in September 1948 with a vision to reinvent furniture manufacturing --an industry dominated by individual craftsmen-- along the lines of Ford-style assembly-line manufacturing. He named the factory the Futorian - Stratford Furniture Company, after the street he lived on in Chicago and trained members of the depressed local farm community to fill out the lines. The efficiencies he introduced to furniture manufacturing would lead to high quality output with faster production and lower prices -- it was fitting that Burrow’s innovations would find their way to production through Futorian’s legacy.
Burrow moved manufacturing to Mississippi in the summer of 2017. Stephen had found a facility in Tupelo that had been recently acquired by a former corporate executive at Target. The husband and wife team were eager to take on the flourishing brand and put their factory to work. It was exactly what Burrow needed, but it wouldn’t be their last manufacturing partner. As luck would have it, growth continued to spike, and they rapidly outstripped the capacity of the Tupelo facility. Indeed, customer demand grew so quickly that the Burrow team had to step in and lend a hand with manufacturing operations to ensure the consistent production of an escalating number of sofas.
When Burrow shifted manufacturing again, this time to North Carolina, they were met with a much warmer welcome. Manufacturers were starting to understand the power and the scale Burrow, it’s ecommerce-driven model, and the innovative, modular construction brought to the furniture industry.
Wayfair goes to manufacturers, asks what they’re making, and puts it in their marketplace. Article goes to manufacturers, asks what they’re making and puts their brand on it. Burrow turned furniture sales on its head. Stephen and Kabeer went to manufacturers with a design and a juggernaut of demand. They focused on simplicity of construction, speed of manufacture, ease of shipping, and the ability to put a high-quality sofa in the living room of every one of their customers within a week.
The Burrow sofa materials and quality are on par with a premium brand. The cost of goods is essentially equivalent, but traditional brands have to ship a fully assembled sofa to a distribution center and then, once again, to the customer, through a specialized trucking company. Many of these costs are bundled into the sticker price. Burrow’s patented modular assembly and locking mechanism means they can just ship it via UPS -- a much faster, cheaper option. Burrow can sell an equivalent or better quality product $500-700 cheaper than Crate & Barrel. Moreover, because of the efficiencies entailed by the Burrow design, they can build and deliver faster, so they also have negative working capital.
Behind the sofa, however, stands the team and the culture that Stephen has developed. Seasoned, strong candidates from big, successful brands are drawn to Burrow. The team includes the former SVP of Marketing from Design Within Reach, the former SVP of Product Design for Fab, and Creative Lead from B-Reel.
Burrow closed 2018 with twenty-nine employees and having booked five times their first-year revenue of 2017. In the first two years, they booked more than $20m in revenue for just one style of sofa. They have already introduced ottomans and chaises, and they recently launched leather and corner-sectional sofa sofas. Pillows and throws have become a key add-on item for their customer community, and these will be followed by tables and rugs. Their market-success has also led to a growing list of accolades and awards: the Time Magazine 50 Best Inventions of 2018; the Fast Company 10 Most Innovative Retail Brands in the World; the 2018 Good Design Award; among others. Burrow now competes with the strongest brands in the world.
It’s been a remarkable rise for Burrow through Stephen’s leadership. He continues to attract the most prestigious job candidates and has now reached thirty-seven employees, with an additional ten part-timers at their first retail showroom, Burrow House, in Soho. The core business continues its strong growth and has benefited from the expansion of product categories, distribution channels, and new markets. The successful launch of Burrow house in NYC brought in-store retail into the fold, but it also led to a doubling in online ecommerce conversions in New York. Expect new stores in Chicago and Washington DC soon. Even now, Stephen and the team reach out to every customer after a year, just to see how they like the sofas. No one expects it. Everyone loves it. Thanks to Burrow, we’re not stuck with long lead-times and indecipherable instructions any time we consider a sofa.

Why You Need To Forget Everything You’ve Heard About “Location, Location, Location”

It used to be that location meant everything. Covid-19 has changed that.
For instance, if you were looking to buy a Subway franchise, you were told that “the location is key.” For the most part it was. In fact, choosing a good great location for your franchise business has always been a crucial piece of the puzzle.
Note: investing in a franchise is a fairly complex undertaking. It’s definitely one that should be done with the help of experts.
Speaking of experts, most franchisors that require a location have a dedicated real estate person on staff (sometimes an entire department). Their job is to help you find suitable property to lease for your new franchise business. And they’re probably experts at it.
With that in mind, you should know that they usually have real estate contacts in local markets. However, it’s likely that they don’t know your area like you do.
In view of that, it’s important for you to listen to their ideas. At the same time, you need to remember that ultimately, both parties (you and your franchisor) need to agree on the location. In other words, you do have some leverage.
Equally important, and a point often overlooked, is the fact that the franchisor needs the location to be an excellent one. That’s because the better the location, the better the chances are that the franchisee (you) will make money.
Franchise Rule #1
In franchising, the more money the franchisee makes, the more money the franchisor makes.
It’s Survey Time
The Washington Post and the University of Maryland just did a survey about consumer shopping habits. The results are ugly.
They found that while a majority of consumers (56%) are comfortable shopping in a grocery store, 67% are not comfortable with the idea of going into a retail clothing store and 78% don’t want to go into a restaurant for a sit-down meal. Feel me?
The results of another survey, this one focused on retail space, stated that “more than 15,000 stores could shutter in 2020, far surpassing 2019’s record 9,548 closures.” I’m actually convinced that number is going to be higher, but let’s stick with theirs for now.
Some Cold, Hard Facts About “Location, Location, Location”
To begin with, It’s no secret that Amazon, and to some extent, Wayfair, and the like, have been hammering the crap out of retail stores. Even so, the potential store closure numbers above are off the charts.

As if that’s not enough, rising rents and more competition have made it tougher for more than a few retailers and food franchise businesses to gain enough market share to be profitable.
In view of that, my question to you is this:
Are “locations” as important as they were a few, short months ago?
It’s something to ponder.
How Important Is Location In An Amazon, Covid-19 World?
Without question, if you’re buying a franchise that requires a commercial space, location is still important. But, again, is it as important as it was last year… or even a few months ago?
Suddenly, it depends on the type of business it is. How weird is that?
For example, if you own a pizza franchise like Domino’s, where delivery is the focus, your location isn’t that important. It just needs to be easy for your employees to get to. Case-in-point: they can’t hire delivery drivers fast enough!
So if you’re interested in buying a food franchise with serious delivery revenue-like Domino’s or Little Caesar’s, instead of looking for space in a high-visibility strip center, you may permitted to investigate alternative (and cheaper) locations to setup your business.
Franchise Location Alternatives
One idea for your franchise location; rent space in a secondary strip center. It would be less visible, but it shouldn’t matter that much.
Better yet, you could take a look at putting your store in a light industrial park. As long as it was easily accessible for your drivers and the few customers who would pick up their food themselves, it should work.
As a result, you should be able to reduce the cost of rent. That means more money for you!
Finally, what about sit-down restaurants?
In a nutshell, full-service restaurant franchises, like Eggs Up Grill, are a different story.
I say that because most full-service restaurants may not have full dining rooms again for a while-because of social distancing guidelines. That’s horrible news for franchisees who’ve invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into these franchises.
That said, if you’re the owner of a full-service food franchise, there are two things you can do to try to keep your business afloat until things change.
Sit down with your accountant and go through all of your expenses, line-by-line. Get them down to the bare minimum, and then go back and chop them more.
Call the CEO of your franchise.
The reason you need to do make that call is to see if you can work something out.
Maybe you can negotiate a lower monthly royalty, or even a complete royalty payment waiver for a set amount of time. Believe me, your franchisor does not want to see you go under, as it’s not a good look for the company.

Imagine for a moment how nice it would be if you could score a prime piece of super-visible space that normally goes for $8,000 a month…for only $5000 a month?

It used to be that location meant everything. Covid-19 has changed that.
For instance, if you were looking to buy a Subway franchise, you were told that “the location is key.” For the most part it was. In fact, choosing a good great location for your franchise business has always been a crucial piece of the puzzle.
Note: investing in a franchise is a fairly complex undertaking. It’s definitely one that should be done with the help of experts.
Speaking of experts, most franchisors that require a location have a dedicated real estate person on staff (sometimes an entire department). Their job is to help you find suitable property to lease for your new franchise business. And they’re probably experts at it.
With that in mind, you should know that they usually have real estate contacts in local markets. However, it’s likely that they don’t know your area like you do.
In view of that, it’s important for you to listen to their ideas. At the same time, you need to remember that ultimately, both parties (you and your franchisor) need to agree on the location. In other words, you do have some leverage.
Equally important, and a point often overlooked, is the fact that the franchisor needs the location to be an excellent one. That’s because the better the location, the better the chances are that the franchisee (you) will make money.

In franchising, the more money the franchisee makes, the more money the franchisor makes.
It’s Survey Time
The Washington Post and the University of Maryland just did a survey about consumer shopping habits. The results are ugly.
They found that while a majority of consumers (56%) are comfortable shopping in a grocery store, 67% are not comfortable with the idea of going into a retail clothing store and 78% don’t want to go into a restaurant for a sit-down meal. Feel me?
The results of another survey, this one focused on retail space, stated that “more than 15,000 stores could shutter in 2020, far surpassing 2019’s record 9,548 closures.” I’m actually convinced that number is going to be higher, but let’s stick with theirs for now.
Some Cold, Hard Facts About “Location, Location, Location”
To begin with, It’s no secret that Amazon, and to some extent, Wayfair, and the like, have been hammering the crap out of retail stores. Even so, the potential store closure numbers above are off the charts.

As if that’s not enough, rising rents and more competition have made it tougher for more than a few retailers and food franchise businesses to gain enough market share to be profitable.
In view of that, my question to you is this:
Are “locations” as important as they were a few, short months ago?
It’s something to ponder.
How Important Is Location In An Amazon, Covid-19 World?
Without question, if you’re buying a franchise that requires a commercial space, location is still important. But, again, is it as important as it was last year… or even a few months ago?
Suddenly, it depends on the type of business it is. How weird is that?
For example, if you own a pizza franchise like Domino’s, where delivery is the focus, your location isn’t that important. It just needs to be easy for your employees to get to. Case-in-point: they can’t hire delivery drivers fast enough!
So if you’re interested in buying a food franchise with serious delivery revenue-like Domino’s or Little Caesar’s, instead of looking for space in a high-visibility strip center, you may permitted to investigate alternative (and cheaper) locations to setup your business.
Franchise Location Alternatives
One idea for your franchise location; rent space in a secondary strip center. It would be less visible, but it shouldn’t matter that much.
Better yet, you could take a look at putting your store in a light industrial park. As long as it was easily accessible for your drivers and the few customers who would pick up their food themselves, it should work.
As a result, you should be able to reduce the cost of rent. That means more money for you!
Finally, what about sit-down restaurants?
In a nutshell, full-service restaurant franchises, like Eggs Up Grill, are a different story.
I say that because most full-service restaurants may not have full dining rooms again for a while-because of social distancing guidelines. That’s horrible news for franchisees who’ve invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into these franchises.
That said, if you’re the owner of a full-service food franchise, there are two things you can do to try to keep your business afloat until things change.
Sit down with your accountant and go through all of your expenses, line-by-line. Get them down to the bare minimum, and then go back and chop them more.
Call the CEO of your franchise.
The reason you need to do make that call is to see if you can work something out.
Maybe you can negotiate a lower monthly royalty, or even a complete royalty payment waiver for a set amount of time. Believe me, your franchisor does not want to see you go under, as it’s not a good look for the company.

Are You Still Bound And Determined To Purchase A Retail Franchise Or A Food Franchise?
If you’ve been leaning towards franchise opportunities that require a physical location, have you started to change your thinking a bit? If so, I certainly can’t blame you. But wait. There may be an opportunity for you here.
Namely, have you thought about the fact that commercial space is going to be plentiful in the coming months?
Translation: if there’s a lot of empty retail space around, landlords are going to deal more. With that in mind…
I hereby decree that the law of supply and demand is now in force.
What does that mean for you?
In a nutshell, cheaper rent.
Imagine for a moment how nice it would be if you could score a prime piece of super-visible space that normally goes for $8,000 a month…for only $5000 a month?
If that happened, you just lowered your expenses 25%. That’s huge! Think about what you could do* with that money?

Fifteen {beautiful!} peel and stick wallpaper options
Hello friends! I hope you had a fun and relaxing weekend! I've used wallpaper quite a bit in our newish home and have loved it! Wallpaper has made a comeback in a BIG way, and I am here for it. :) I've used four different wallpaper designs and don't regret installing them for one minute! With traditional glued wallpaper, you need to be pretty set on the design and make sure you love it, like the blue floral wallpaper I used in our little hallway:
I had loved that one for so long and found it for much cheaper (it's sold at Anthropologie 😬 and is NOT cheap there) so finally went for it. That little hallway is one of my favorite spots in our home!
I found the glue method pretty easy to install, but the peel and stick wallpapers that are big right now aren't hard either. They are a lot like contact paper and I've used them in a few spots in our home.

And this cherry blossom design on the backs of the DIY office built ins:
My most recent project with it is this peel and stick gray grasscloth looking stuff I hung in our master (I STILL need to paint the trim and lower walls!):

The peel and stick is supposed to be easy to remove -- and shouldn't harm your walls in the process. I haven't had to remove it so I don't have any first hand experience with that. I've heard from some that it comes of clean but a couple people have mentioned it pulled paint. We'll see when the time comes! But because I've had such great luck with these peel and sticks, I decided to share some of my (mostly very affordable) favorites I've found online. There are SO MANY pretty and fun options out there right now! First up -- Target! They have a crazy good selection! I found my powder room wallpaper there (they usually have a good amount of options in the store). I love this take on the birch tree wallpaper that is so popular right now. This one is much more subdued and pretty (links to each one are under the photos):

I love this one SO much -- it's a beautiful floral pattern that reminds me of my office wallpaper. I love the colors, the design...I may need to find a spot for this one:

This is similar to the grasscloth wallpaper in our master, but in the more natural color. If it's like mine, it will have a very slight texture but it's not rough like real grasscloth:

Now let's check out the options at Walmart! This floral watercolor design was a favorite -- how great would this look against white board and batten?:

Don't want to install shiplap on your walls? This rustic shiplap wallpaper looks like the real thing! A friend of mine tried to hang a regular shiplap wallpaper and said it was impossible to match up the lines perfectly. This looks like it might be a bit easier?:

This tweed wallpaper is another favorite -- it leans a little more masculine which I really like. How great would this be in a media room or office? It comes in a few different colors:
