This is actually a really interesting question, because it’s something that @kristnirpresti have discussed a lot this week, well everything that happened at Upsalla. I am what you would call a bit unobservant, so I rewatch and pick shit up I never picked up before and I had missed that he basically was willing to sacrifice Athelstan, so that he would have sons. 

It’s’ a hard thing to know, because that’s still very early in their friendship. Athelstan was still technically a slave, but I do not think that Ragnar wanted to sacrifice Athelstan.  He was going through his Henry VIII phase, so he was willing to do whatever it took, but I do think it would have had an effect on him.

He would not have communicated it, or pain he felt, but Athelstan was already a confidante, and I think that Ragnar would have felt good and in many ways, he would not have become someone who did know religious tolerance, who did have the bravery to question the Gods, to see that there’s more than just one side of life, had Athelstan not been a part of his life.

It would have likely changed how he turned out and his tolerance and open mind are part of what made him so great.

tbh that confused me too??? (having historical knowledge while wanting to enjoy historical dramas is a pain *looks at the tudors*

It’s honestly so annoying.  Louise de La Vallière was a huge part of why he fell in love with Versailles to begin with, and they just skirt over her. She’s there for like 10 minutes in a few episodes, and it’s like seriously?  I feel like it should have started from an earlier point, because if it’s called VERSAILLES, that is pivotal, in my opinion.

Even the thing with Henriette is ended so quickly, and that annoys the fuck out of me because they are my OTP and I am endlessly glad that I get to write amazing things with them here.

It just seems like other important relationships he had were ignored, in favor of the annoying, boring, toxic mistress. 

It is such a pain to be such a History nerd and know all these things, because I watch and while I adore this show so much, I needed more of that foundation.
