Just now, I just found an old post saved in my drafts from 5 years ago. And what I love so much about it is that even though we don't say it every night any more, but still all my foster kids pick up on it and they request to say it occasionally. I just said it with Older and Younger Brother the night before last. Passed down from my grandfather to my dad to me to these boys. So sweet.

@fosterthoughts was talking about their family way of saying “I love you” and it really resonated with me. Growing up my Dad had a saying he would always say when he told me he loved me. I won’t share here because it feels too private, but essentially it meant he loved me no matter what I did or how bad things were. I probably used to roll my eyes whenever he said it, but I used to secretly feel all warm and cozy when I would hear it. His father used to say the same to him.

I’ve kept the same for my girls, but added a part beforehand that’s new. My girls request it most nights after the lights are off and I’m sitting there waiting for them to fall asleep. All three of our voices in the dark promising to love each other no matter what. (Of course my 5 year old usually adds the word p00-p00 in there somewhere, but it’s still beautiful nonetheless.)

The 21st More and less on a set of scales :

This post is especially important to me, as it keeps turning loops in my head, and gave me many restless nights. I often try to draw the summary of how my dream-way of educating the dwarf is actually resembling our reality. And I often feel that I lack miles behind my actual concepts and visions.

I'm a romantic fellow. I like to believe that the best children can get is being outside, getting dirty and sweaty from wild play, and then come home for a hot soup in front of the chimney. I personally imagine that the simple toys, the natural toys are the ones that let their fantasy bloom the most. And that the adventures they invent themselves, instead of us parents offering them, are the most memorable ones.

I do know that this is not 1950 anymore, and luckily so. Children must learn to adapt and find their ways through our century's rules and speed. But then I also see how hard it is for them to find a healthy balance once you offer them a tablet to watch cartoons. I did that for the first time last week when the dwarf was sick, and I was too tired and down to interact with him. Since then he keeps asking for another film, as those bright colours and lively scenes left a big impression, obviously.

For my taste dwarfie owns too many things. Too many little cars and dolls and clothes that I am not sure about whether another child had to sew them. These things just happen - either friends or family give him things, or we parents feel overwhelmed and are so happy to get a moment's relief when he checks out a new car. He LOVES cars. And as such, that should be ok, letting him chose the things he is interested in - as long as it isn't getting too much.

But somehow I cannot shut up that nagging voice inside of me, preaching of the oh so natural life, that I personally am living much less than the dwarf. Because as a mother, you want to do better through your child. Wicked, wicked habit.

I would really appreciate if anyone has thoughts on this, similar experiences, or totally different attempts.

I love painting for my friends. This is a painting I did a few weeks ago for a friend's wedding. She is from New Zealand and he is from Italy so I painted different plants from both countries. Italy has an olive branch and a cactus that is typically grown it the south of Italy. New Zealand has a fern and a kowhai, the national flower. I would have liked to add more plants but then I really liked the simplicity of the painting.
