"You know what the worst thing about being a line cook is?" Foster sighed, leaning on the table, resting his chin on his arms. "It's that I almost never feel like cooking for myself at home."

Need some utopia in your life? #Repost @50wattsbooks ・・・Dome overload from “R. Buckminster Fuller: Pattern-Thinking” by Daniel López-Pérez / 368-page paperback with flaps, 6.5 x 9.5 inches, hundreds of illustrations *** "Packed with illuminating archival illustrations, this deep dive into one of the 20th century’s greatest design-thinkers covers everything from his analysis of the cornea of the human eyeball to international economic structures." -- Christopher Knight ― Los Angeles Times "For Fuller, nature is the most exquisite technology we know; and what underlies all of his work is the quest to uncover nature’s fundamental principles--in order to foster their manifestation as a pattern integrity 'for successfully regenerating all life aboard our planetary spaceship.'" –Jaime Lawrence Snyder, Lars Müller Fuller Series Editor The work of R. Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983) is among the most extraordinary and inventive in 20th-century design and architecture, not least for its incorporation of a range of intellectual and technical disciplines. Fuller described himself as an “engineer, inventor, mathematician, architect, cartographer, philosopher, poet, cosmogonist, comprehensive designer and choreographer.'' R. Buckminster Fuller: Pattern-Thinking is a major reassessment of Fuller’s legacy in the context of design, examining his singular vision of new conceptual models for design and architecture, alongside his ideas on their potentially world-altering consequences. Drawing extensively on his archive and with over 300 images, the book follows Fuller’s explorations of geometry, language and intellectual property in their relation to design principles and pedagogy, organizing its survey of Fuller’s work through parallel conceptual threads rather than in a linear chronology of his career. https://www.instagram.com/p/CfgveFQOj0Z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Week 2: “Accumulation”
PART ONE (Burrow’s Reading)
Reading the intro to Burrow’s, I have provided my own thoughts and definitions of the concepts brought up in the book. There is further development on repetition because this concept is more of the focal point of this segment.
Principle: A principle is not a rule, but more of a foundation, guideline, or platform to work from. Principles can vary from person to person and are what we decide of them. They should be used to help guide and foster the work, rather than dictate it.
Material: Rather than looking at material as an individual phrase or piece, material to me is the breadth of work that one creates and the connecting thread that runs through it all.
Habits: A habit as a human or a dancer is one that is so engrained in our being that sometimes they can become a part of our natural state. They can be positive, negative, neutral, or sometime go completely unnoticed. When it comes more specifically to movement, habits can sometimes form what others call style or aesthetic.
Repetition: The concept of repetition is one that can embody a movement, thought, or phrase to add further weight and emphasis to it. Within movement, using movement or and idea over and over is a repetitive tool. Depending on the use and meaning behind the repetition, it can create a strength or a weakness to the work.
Repetition Strengths: Through the allowance of seeing something more than one time either through direct succession or throughout a piece, it can aid both the viewer and the mover to be that much more involved in the idea. Within a work, if repetition is applied sporadically throughout like with the concept of a motif, it can be pleasing to see the same thing or a variation of it return.
Repetition Weakness: Although when using repetition, if it is used in a redundant (haha!) or extremely expectant manner, it can give a feeling of expectation or unexciting. With the use of repetition, it can sometimes be viewed a lazy on the part of the choreographer in using the same material over and over. The viewers could also become board with having to watch the same thing throughout a piece.
PART TWO (Choreographic Examples)
“Café Müller” by Pina Bausch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WLazG0bQPI
With this excerpt from the piece, it involves a trio of dancers with a singular phrase that is repeated in succession with each time happening a little quicker and more exasperated than the last. In regards to repetition in this piece, I believe that it was used successfully and added to the strength of the work. With the repeating movement, it drives home the feelings of desperation, longing, force, giving up, connection, and more.
PART THREE (Reflection)
a. Step-by-Step process: With this process, it wasn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be. Although when I’m creating phrase work, I found it difficult to move through this. When I create phrasing I usually work in succession, but because this exercise was working step-by-step I found myself getting stuck more easily.
b. With a Beat: Once the phrase was complete, I first tried it with music that had a stronger base and pulse. Although I liked the song, I found that it wasn’t as enjoyable to move too. It felt like with the stronger pulse it was dictating my movement more than I wanted it to.
c. Without a Beat: The second song I picked didn’t really have much of a beat and I found this to be a much more enjoyable experience. The reason for this is because I felt like I could move more to my inner tempo and rhythm rather than being forced to move my the music.

"I wish I had teenage responsibilities, but I'm definitely way happier not living at home," Foster agreed. "But things did seem way easier when we could just have someone else solve our problems for us." He paused for a moment, wracking his brain for an answer. "Uh.... Not much, I guess. Overworking myself as usual. I pop on and off dating sites, but, I don't know, my deep need to keep my private life as private as possible doesn't really gel with most people."
Tumblr media
"sometimes i wish i was a teenager again, everything was much easier then" it was kind of a joke but also, a little bit true. sydney smiles softly, "my life? nothing much is going on" that was a lie, she'd not really spoken to her siblings about what had been happening with jude, "how about you go first?".

"That checks out with everything I've heard about youngest children." Foster laughed a little. "I don't think my youngest sister was extra spoiled, but maybe it just looks different in every household." He gave Jasmine a grateful smile. "That's really nice of you. I'll try to remember to take you up on that in the future - it's probably not good for me to just... never talk to people about my problems."
Tumblr media
“that is a privilege, I am not privy to; seeing as I'm the youngest of my siblings. guess that's why I'm so accustomed to being spoiled.” jasmine remarks with a shameless grin, confident in her role as the baby of the family. “well, you can always burden me with your problems. I don't mind. I like hearing others speak. in my career—all I do is the opposite.” she adds, rubbing the nape of her neck, exhibiting some bashfulness at last. “that's true. they should enjoy this while it lasts. before my soulmate finally learns how to use their gps.”

"They're not so bad once you know how to season them," Foster insisted. "But I'll take any excuse to get take out instead - thanks for spending some time with me before I head back to my empty flat; it really makes a difference, you know?"
Tumblr media
"Yeah. No. Frozen meals don't sound appealing in the slightest. Gotta pass on that one," said Tae with a shake of his head and a laugh. "But, yeah, exactly. It's only right we do that. They support us, we support then and so the world continues to turn."

"Something like that - I never really put much stock in it. Maybe I should." Foster snorted; clearly both he and Liam had that problem. "Honestly, that does sound really fun - and it'll probably be good for both of us to start looking forward to things that aren't just... work and in your case, kid stuff."
Tumblr media
"ain't that the truth," liam said with a laugh, shaking his head. "yeah that's why people say, isn't it? ' let the body and mind rest ' or something like that," honestly, liam didn't listen much but he knew people did say he needed to get more hobbies, apart from work, his band and things his daughter wants to do. "we'll make a list, like, of things we wanna do, see what we can make happen, and set dates. it will be real fun!"

Foster flushed deeply, letting out a very nervous laugh. "Oh - well - that was definitely not what I meant, but thank you for that." Navigating around compliments and flirtations was not exactly Foster's forte, but neither was getting them. "It is fancy, but I promise there's a few affordable items, as long as you're okay not getting duck or lamb." He paused for a moment. "I don't think I've ever had grits."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"well, sugar," the redhead smirked, "we could be sharing a tongue if you wanted to, pretty face like that. you might have to buy me a drink first." there was a freedom to being newly single, to having tossed her engagement ring into a lake and driven to the nearest airport the moment she found her fiancé—ex fiancé—had been playing her like a fiddle for months. "it's pretty darn fancy up there, right? i'm more a grits and gravy kind of girl. maybe i could afford a lettuce leaf up there, a glass of tap water or something."

"Sometimes I do portioning, but honestly, I think I ruined myself for leftovers, because now I'm such a snob about fresh food." Foster laughed a little. "I love making fresh bread; but it's definitely something you need to make sure you have a full day planned after throwing it in the bread maker, because it's hard to resist just staring at it and willing it to cook faster."
Tumblr media
"junky foods are fine in moderation. besides, the best part about cooking, and since you cook for a living, you should know there's this thing called portioning. just split the recipe in half and you won't make as much, therefore won't have as much laying around, and it's less waste if something goes bad," she said. "ooh, bread is fun to make. once it's in the bread maker, it's a boring process, but it's yummy and it's food, so it's worth the wait," jamie said with a nod. "oh, i have more ramen in my house than anything else. i have so many teenagers in and out of my house all day everyday, i just make one big pot of it and that's what they eat throughout the day. if i decide i love them enough, sometimes i'll make a big batch of chicken alfredo, but on lazy days, ramen is my go-to."

"I'm not knocking it - I mean, it's not to my taste, but good thing we don't share a tongue, right?" Foster wrinkled his nose. "Y'know what, please just forget I ever said that." A soft smile spread over his face at Evanie's question. "I love being a cook. I know it's sort of corny when people say that this was what they were made to do, but I really do feel that way. I work Belle Nourrture, I'm a line cook there." @rufficns

unlike foster, evanie was out there on her own. she was with gilly in london but, if anything, it was her job to support her younger sister—the last thing she wanted was for her little sibling to have to pull her out of the mud again. "don't knock it. it's warming, comforting. makes you feel invincible if you're watching bridget jones." the british classics still had her sides splitting after a glass too many. "where do you work, anyway? do you like being a cook, even if it exhausts you?"

"Like, I love cooking, don't get me wrong - I really do enjoy my job," Foster insisted. "But usually after cooking and prepping all evening, by the time I get home I just want to pop something in the microwave or dump hot water into a ramen cup."
Tumblr media
"What would that be?" Atlas asks, lifting his eyes up towards the other as he places his own hands down against the table. "Oh shit, yeah." He chuckles, nodding his head. "I probably wouldn't want to fucking cook at home either."

"I don't mind the food there, actually; if I'm on the tail end of my shift, I'll quickly throw something together to bring home if I have the time, but lately they've been really stingy about who can bring what home and how much of what can get thrown away," Foster let out a defeated sigh. "Maybe I'm just lucky that I work at a nice restaurant and not a fast food joint."
Kashvi glanced up from where she had been nursing a cup of coffee and a scone and couldn't help the grin on her face at his statement. "I think a lot of people in the food industry particularly think that way. Do you also hate eating the food from the place you work at?" She was lucky that way--she had no problems in dancing around no matter if she was on the clock or not, but it wasn't exactly what people would consider as normal if she was dancing down the sidewalks in the city.

"Tell me about it," Foster rolled his eyes with a playful look on his face, but there was a hint of sadness. "Sure, we can just start now. I'm curious as to what's going on in your life anyway, so it'll give us an excuse to catch up, too."
Tumblr media
"yeah we do, i guess that's what happens when you become an adult" sydney teases him. these days she didn't really do much, so she appreciated the company of her older sibling, "it would be, give me a chance to cook for more than one person for a change. we should do it more, but hey, let's start now".

"I guess it comes along with being the oldest," Foster chuckled a little. "At least, in my case. So I don't always like to burden my sisters with whatever loud chaos is going on in my head; it feels like I'm burdening them with something." A soft laugh though his nose followed. "Well I guess the general public is lucky you're so giving."
Tumblr media
“oh, I do that all the time. I try not to, but I just can't help myself it seems. that negative voice in the back of my head has no reason to sound so sure and yet, it often does. but whenever I'm in doubt, I just lean on my friends and family. they help me make sense of my confusion.” jasmine concluded, arms outstretched as she felt her muscles tense from prior exhaustion. “he would if I had one. instead, I'm just giving compliments away for free!”

"That's exactly what I'm thinking; I have some frozen meals I could eat, but now that I'm thinking about someone else cooking?" Foster chuckled a little to himself. "Clearly I need to support others making a living too."
Tumblr media
"You're on," said Tae with a laugh, although he wouldn't really say no to someone giving him an excuse to cook. Despite working in a restaurant and not working in the kitchen, he did enjoy working his magic whenever he got a chance. It was all self-taught, the main reason he wasn't actually in the kitchen. "Might just have to get takeout tonight, let someone else do the cooking completely."
