You Gotta Lose? Hell, Some Of Us Ain’t Dead Yet by Mary Leary
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0fz3FVBlOE
NRBQ has done so many amazing songs. I never thought much about “Roll Call,” from Tiddlywinks - for one thing, it has a lighter, almost Billy Joel sound that’s more about latter day Terry Adams style than what I think of as the classic Q. Yet just as Adams’ work has grown on me, this track has made its way into my consciousness. The lyrics speak to me more in 2020 than they did when Tiddlywinks was released in 1980, before the D.C.-area music scene had lost Robert Goldstein (Urban Verbs), Kevin MacDonald (brilliant visual artist and scene stalwart who helped me design and layout [The] Infiltrator), Danny Gatton disciple/guitar maverick Evan Johns, bassist Michael Maye from the original H-Bombs, Rick Dreyfuss (Half Japanese/Chumps/Shakemore), Libby Hatch and Michael Mariotte (Tru Fax and the Insaniacs), Sally Be/Berg - REM/Egoslavia/SHE/Robert Palmer), Nurses member Marc Halpern (heroin, 1982), Lorenzo (Pee- Wee) Jones (Tiny Desk Unit) and hybrid rocker Jim Altman (HIV, 1990s). Goldstein, Dreyfuss, Maye and MacDonald succumbed to cancer, while Evan Johns’ deterioration followed years of touring, hard drinking and pushing himself past the limit.
(Top to bottom: Tommy Keene, Kevin MacDonald, Susan Mumford)
Those named above have been joined by Tommy Keene (the Rage/the Razz/solo/Paul Westerberg/Matthew Sweet - cardiac arrest at the age of 59; 2017), TDU’s Susan Mumford (cancer, 2018), David Byers (Psychotics/H.R./Bad Brains), and Skip Groff (Yesterday and Today/ Limp Records/Dischord - seizure, 2019). This is just an imperfect/incomplete naming of D.C.-area losses - I’m sure journalists from other cities could make lists. A horde of New Wave and early alternative musicians have died within the past few years. Whether through the stress of hard living/poverty, substance abuse, cancer or Covid-19, we’re seeing artists pass much earlier than I, anyway, expected them to.
(Top to bottom: Fred "Freak” Smith, Michael Maye with Evan Johns, Tru Fax and the Insaniacs)
We’re already past the loss of all the original Ramones. All the Cramps less Poison Ivy. Joe Strummer. Robert Quine. Hilly Kristal. Lou Reed. As of July, 2020, since 2018 we’ve also lost Andy Gill, Ivan Kral, Genesis P-Orridge, Adam Schlesinger, Danny Mihm, Ric Ocasek, Daniel Johnston, Kim Shattuck, Lorna Doom, Mark Hollis, Keith Flint, Ranking Roger, Mark E. Smith, Glenn Branca, Randy Rampage, Hardy Fox, Pete Shelley, Matthew Seligman, Bill Rieflin, Dave Greenfield, Florian Schneider, Ian Dury, Benjamin Orr, Kirsty McColl and David Roback.
(Top to bottom: Sally Be/Berg, Ranking Roger, Danny Mihm)
Talking about the deaths of talented, gifted creatives is a helluva way to start a column. But here we are. Older performers don’t always get the attention afforded newer, so the rest of this piece shares and celebrates artists from the original New Wave/punk scenes who are still around and active. Many are from the D.C.-area cornucopia I know best, while others have just come to my attention, or seem especially noteworthy.

The Zeros’ Javier Escovedo has been steadily emitting tasty Americana-ish rock while occasionally dropping some Zeros sturm-’n’-drang - most recently with Munster Records single “In The Spotlight” and a track on Burger Records’ Quarantunes compilation. Quarantunes is a seven-album affair featuring 140 alternative/punk performers old and new, all of whom wrote songs between March-April 2020. A cursory listen to Volume 2 reveals the recorded version of a good night at a very wild bar, with Zeros still handily kicking ass of all ages.

Velvet Monkeys/B.A.L.L. player and Sonic Youth/Teenage Fanclub producer Don Fleming reports, “We’ve put out new tracks ‘Theories of Rummanetics’ and ‘Legacy of Success.’ Jay has written a few ‘modules’ and Malcolm and I are having fun doing the music,” adding, “I play some electric six string on the new Rob Moss album - it’s fun to be on, with lots of guitar slingers from the DC daze.”
Yup, Rob Moss of Skin-Tight Skin has solicited contributions from Fleming and from Marshall Keith (Slickee Boys), along with a pile of talent including Stuart Casson (Psychotics/Dove/Meatmen), Franz Stahl (Foo Fighters/Scream), Billy Loosigian (Nervous Eaters, the Boom-Boom Band), Nels Cline (Wilco) and Saul Koll (the guy who made guitars for Henry Kaiser and Lee Ranaldo). The set is called We’ve Come Back To Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Chumps/Workdogs/Jam Messengers player Rob Kennedy apparently has too much energy to throw in the towel - he’s kept recording, performing and making various sorts of lo-fi, DIY mischief that never loses that fresh, ‘70s feeling. Jam Messengers released Night And Day on vinyl in 2017. One of my fave Kennedy tracks, “A Low Down Dirty Shame” speaks to this moment as well as any.

Former Tiny Desk Unit/Fuji’s Navy/Rhoda & the Bad Seeds members Bob Boilen, Kevin Lay, Michael Barron and Bob Harvey have released a new Danger Painters joint, Thank Speak Love This Record. Lay joked, “I have a voice made for Morse Code” before revealing his recent work with Rhoda and the Bad Seeds material, released June 30 as Live at Nightclub 9:30. Boilen continues to introduce artists both vital and obscure via Tiny Desk Concerts and All Songs Considered/NPR.

I’ve seen David Arnson play recently and can attest to his proclivity for unfettered growth via Insect Surfers, the instrumental group that originally had some trouble establishing cred. with younger D.C. punks. The Surfers’ most recent release was Living Fossils (2019). Arnson celebrated the band’s 40 years of existence with a European tour in 2019.

Jad Fair says, “Half Japanese will have a new album released in November on Fire Records.” Jad’s art was recently featured at the Hiromart Gallery/Tokyo, while David has created a Facebook page where fans can pick up his colorful images for, well, mere bags o’ shells, as far as we can see - https://www.facebook.com/David-Fair-Painting-107055447700859/
Despite health issues for several members, Bad Brains has collaborated with Element to make BB themed skate wear https://www.elementbrand.com/mens-collection-bad-brains/ and added some killer live tracks to its YouTube channel.
Former WGTB programmers John Paige and Steve Lorber have been presenting Rock Continuum on WOWD-LP FM 94.3 since 2017.
Mike Stax continues to give excellent motivation for hunting down a pair of Beatle boots - Munster released the Loons’ 7” EP, A Dream In Jade Green, last year. The latest issue of Ugly Things, said by Stax to be heavily focused on the Pretty Things’ Phil May, was reported in early July to be nearing publication.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6jSc7gEAv0
Razz (the) Documentary will tell the story of how an uncommonly combustible rock band - especially with the Bill Craig/Abaad Behram line-up - helped spread the Flamin’ Groovies gospel while throwing down oddly compelling originals and taking the two-guitar thing up several notches - the producers are purportedly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Whether anyone can ever recreate the experience of being in an altered state via obsessive, sometimes conversational repetition of certain chords, anchored by Ted Nicely rethinking just what can be done with a bass guitar, given girth by Doug Tull’s intuitive drumming; with Mike Reidy the heat-seeking missile somewhere near the center... well, I doubt it. ‘Cause at this point you’re feeling no pain and it’s not about drinking; there is no room for anything but water - the beer will be knocked over when you’re this busy matching David Arnson’s other-side-of-the-front-line’s leaps into joydum while PCP’d out yahoos from the sticks learn the hard way that hugging Marshall amps can lead to lifelong repercussions. There (in case nothing I want to say about [the] Razz makes it into the film) - I’ve said it.
Discussions among old friends have confirmed that I’m not alone in being happily surprised at this development - we never expected our actions - which led to the hardcore explosion that’s received a lot more attention... would ever make it into any history book. Yet coverage of many of the D.C.-area musicians featured in this piece also comes with Punk The Capitol, A History of D.C. Punk and Hardcore, 1976-1983. Spring 2021 is the projected date for streaming/DVD release.
Ivan Julian came back from a scary 2015 bout with cancer to do a show in New York in 2016. The cancer has returned. Friends have organized a GoFundMe to raise money for surgery and basic needs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDB_3by-xkI
The Shakemore fest also refuses to fade, promising “eight hours of streaming steaming video” on August 1. Sounds will be provided by R. Stevie Moore, Velvet Monkeys, Tav Falco’s Panther Burns, Half Japanese, Johnny Spampinato, Weird Paul and the Chumps, among many, many others.
Despite having played at CBGB and other alternative venues in 1979, at the height of the New Wave, Gary Wilson’s work is so distinctive, he’s rarely been included with any musical genre other than the oft-vague “experimental” category. Folks were too unmoored by his visceral performances to get behind him. Wilson’s 14th album, Tormented, was released by Cleopatra in February.
Paul Collins recently published a book that he wrote with Chuck Nolan; I Don’t Fit In: My Wild Ride Through the Punk and Power Pop Trenches with the Nerves and the Beat (Hozac Books).
As “Heath,” Michael Layne Heath, a journalist who contributed to (the) Infiltrator and many other ‘zines, published My Week Beats Your Year: Encounters with Lou Reed in May (Hat & Beard Press).
In April, X released its first album in 35 years; Alphabetland.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ1I-laItPI
As exciting for me as any of the above is Richard Hell with the Heartbreakers’ 2019 release of Yonkers Demo 1976. Hell’s “You Gotta Lose” is one of my picks for best punk/new wave singles of all time. The Heartbreakers version is, predictably, messier than the Robert Quine guitar-spiked classic. Its more excessive charms are growing on me...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48QnsysCN_A
This piece could go on and on - compiling it has been exhausting. The best part has been the response to my social media call for any info I didn’t have re: the D.C.-centric scene I left for New York in 1983. Musicians anxious to keep their compadres’ names alive have hammered that post with 138 comments to date. Urban Verbs percussionist Danny Frankel, who’s played with a colorful spread of artists including Beck, Marianne Faithful, Lou Reed, John Cale and k.d. Lang, made a point of being sure I knew about the passing of Marc Halpern, a source of obvious pain. People were worried I wouldn’t mention John Stabb (Government Issue - 2016), rockabilly player Billy Hancock (2018), Fred “Freak” Smith (Strange Boutique/Beefeater - murdered in Los Angeles, 2017), John Hansen (Slickee Boys - 2010), record store owner/Wasp Records starter/music supporter Bill Asp, Jimmy Barnett of The Killer Bees, and David Byers.
One of the hardest for me to write about is Chris Morse, whose 1984 passing from a drug overdose wrenched so many - I managed to get an obituary into, I think, The New York Rocker (that physical trek was part of a long-ago blur; a very hot day of traipsing over steaming concrete in a narrow-skirted dress to deliver the copy). Chris popped up in my dreams for years - one “visitation” pushed me to write a poem about it in the ‘90s. Morse, who played in Rhoda & The Bad Seeds and worked as a doorman at The Pyramid after moving to NYC in the early ‘80s, was on one of the Urban Verbs’ early flyers. I’m on another.
(Top to bottom: Me in an early Verbs flyer/photo shot at the Atlantis; Chris Morse on another Verbs flyer)
I ended up getting so burnt out on the responsibility of populating this sad roll call, I’ve started a memorial page for them all on Facebook. The nature of truly alternative music is such that many of its lights still fail to fill the pages of major publications. Many of these lights gave a great deal of their lives, if not everything, for the art they believed in. It’s good to remember them, and those heady early days. It’s good to enjoy what we still can.

Fossil Q Marshal Gen 2 Smoke Stainless Steel Touchscreen Smartwatch FTW2108
As you may already know the Fossil Q Marshal Gen 2 is great looking smartwatch. But looks are not the only thing that matters to consumers these days. Most of us are looking for a combination of both style and functionality. The Fossil Q Marshal Gen 2 delivers in all areas and here’s why.
Let’s start with the Specs
First the watch is sandwiched with snapdragon 2100 with 512 megabytes of RAM. An internal storage of four gigs inch LED screen with the resolution of 320×290. It comes with three sixty milliamp hour battery which will last for about a day and it charges via wireless charger and finally it is water-resistant with an IP rating of 67.
With specs out of the way here’s a brief rundown of the Fossil Q Marshal feature set, see the full list here
It comes to the stainless steel straps which can also be changed with other straps. On the outside it doesn’t have many buttons but just a single button on the right and on the left side there are speakers with a mic.
When you power up the device a beautiful dial is what comes up first. What is great about this dial is, it is fully customizable and you can also choose from presets which are customized beforehand. Just like an Android phone from top down a notification bar can be pulled down from which you can choose to go to settings to adjust to your liking. And most importantly, it does let you call via this watch using the microphone.
It has the Q fossil app for customization and obviously Google Play Store from which you can choose to download applications or you can simply sink your phone with this watch and the applications will sync on its own. Some of the basic preinstalled applications include, weather app, and google maps. But the stock application that really comes in handy is google assistant app.
So some of the features of the Fossil Q Marshal Gen 2 that we personally like…. is that it really helps when you’re out there looking for some directions to places on maps. To have this on your wrist really comes in handy.
Another cool feature is flashlight althouh not a bright light but yes does its job perfectly fine during night.
The most important and the most useful application and will probably get the most use, is find my phone app. It does what it says, it’s really useful and saves the trouble of turning over pillows to find your phone.
If this Fossil Q Marshal Gen 2 doesn’t work for you be sure to see the rest of the options here
If you are planning to buy this watch you can go here to checkout actual customer reviews. But keep in mind there are other alternatives like the Moto 360 which you can find below.

I have PopSocket grips on all the different phone cases I use because I can’t imagine using my phone without one.
A smart display
source
Google
Google Home Hub, available at Walmart, $129 (originally $149)
The Google Home Hub puts all the smarts of the Google Assistant into a smart home hub with screen. That way, she can see visual answers to her questions, the weather forecast, news reports, YouTube videos, and more right on the screen as the Assistant reads back the information. It also has a speaker, so she can play her favorite music. Plus, the Home Hub can control smart home devices.

Bellabeat has been making gorgeous pieces of smart jewelry for years now, and the Leaf Urban and new Leaf Chakra make excellent gifts. Not only does Bellabeat’s smart jewelry look fabulous as a necklace, bracelet, or brooch, it also packs a lot of smart features. The Leaf Urban and Chakra can track activity, mindfulness breathing exercises, and sleep patterns. It also doubles as a silent alarm so she’ll awaken peacefully each morning.
A smart herb garden
source
Amazon
AeroGarden Harvest, available on Amazon, $140.69 (originally $149.95)
Who doesn’t love fresh herbs? AeroGarden’s Harvest herb garden isn’t super high-tech, but it is techy in that it uses hydroponics to grow delicious herbs and other produce quickly without much effort on her part. All she has to do to get her herbs growing is pop the seed pods in the planter, give it water regularly, and add the included plant food now and then. The planter does the rest, providing light on a schedule, moving the water, and alerting her when it needs more. In our tests, we had great success with this garden, and we’re sure she will, too.
A pair of stylish headphones
source
Amazon
V-MODA Crossfade 2 Wireless Over-Ear Headphones, available at Amazon, $339.99
V-MODA makes some of my favorite headphones. The Crossfade 2 are wireless, so she doesn’t have to deal with wires or worry whether her phone has a headphone jack or not. These are definitely statement headphones, but they are classy looking and the rose gold accents look gorgeous. Most importantly, these headphones sound great.
A cool, artistic smart light
source
LIFX
LIFX Wi-Fi LED Beam Kit, available at Best Buy, $129.99 (originally $149.99)
If her design aesthetic is modern and a bit funky, she might just love Lifx’s cool smart light beam kit. The Kit comes with six light beams that she can arrange on a wall in cool patterns to create accent lighting in her home. In the app, she can choose which colors she wants the beams to display and turn her space into an art exhibit. We tried the Beam Kit and we loved it.
An attractive hybrid smartwatch
source
Bloomingdale’s
Fossil Q Harper smart hybrid watch, available at Fossil, $115 (originally $175)
If the women in your life don’t like smartwatches, but they still want to feel connected to their phones, a smart hybrid watch is a great gift to give. The Fossil Q Harper hides high-tech features inside a classic, attractive, simple, analog watch body. You’d never know that this watch is so smart by looking at it, but it can buzz with notifications, adjust to different time zones, track fitness, and wake her up peacefully with a silent alarm.
A gorgeous Bluetooth speaker
source
Marshall
Marshall Stanmore Wireless Multi-Room Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Speaker, available at Amazon, $399.99

The Stanmore Bluetooth Speaker comes in a soft off-white color with rosy gold hardware that is subtle and classy. You can also go for the classic black version if your girl isn’t into light color palettes.
A fitness tracker that’s also a smartwatch
source
Fitbit
Fitbit Versa, available at Fitbit, $159.95
The Fitbit Versa is the best-looking fitness tracker Fitbit has made to date. It looks a bit like a more angular Apple Watch and you can choose from a lot of different brands to personalize it to match your leading lady’s style. The Versa has a few smartwatch features and apps, but it’s best at fitness tracking and keeping tabs on workouts.
An instant camera
source
Instax HQ/Fujifilm
Fujifilm Instax Square SQ20 Camera, available at Amazon, $159.95 (originally $199.95)
Instant cameras make cute, fun gifts for shutterbugs, and the new Fujifilm Instax Square SQ20 is the latest and greatest one you can buy. A Kindle Paperwhite
source
Amazon
Kindle Paperwhite, available on Amazon, $129.99
Amazon’s new Kindle Paperwhite is finally waterproof, so she can take it into the bubble bath with her and read until the water cools and the bubbles disappear. A light therapy alarm clock
source
Amazon
Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock, available on Amazon, $104.99 (originally $139.99)

It uses a colored sunrise simulation to gradually wake you up 20 to 40 minutes before your alarm is set to go off. She can choose between five different nature sounds for the actual alarm, too, so she won’t have to deal with a blaring alarm if the light doesn’t work its magic. She can use it as a bedside reading lamp, too.
A smart luggage tag
source
Away
Away x Tile Luggage Tag, available from Away, $30
Lost luggage is an all too common experience but with the Away x Tile Luggage tag, she’ll always know where her bag is. The classic black leather tag has a Tile Bluetooth tracker inside that connects to an app on her phone to show her where her bag is in real time so long as it’s within range of her phone or other Tile members.
A cleaning kit for her phone
source
WHOOSH
WHOOSH! Cleaning Kit, available on Amazon, $16.99
Our smartphones get dirty and nobody likes a grimey phone. Luckily, WHOOSH! is here to save the day with its cleaning kit, which disinfects electronics safely. It comes with a cleaning spray and cleaning cloth.
A pair of stylish glasses that block blue light from electronics
source
Felix Gray
Felix Gray Glasses, available at Felix Gray, $95
Blue light from electronics can lead to eye strain and make it hard to fall asleep at night, so why not get her a pair of blue light-blocking glasses? Felix Gray makes both prescription and non-prescription glasses that look great and work well to block out those harmful blue rays.
A beautiful wireless charger
source
Native Union
Native Union Drop Wireless Charger, available on Amazon, $59.99
Most wireless chargers are boring black or white pucks that are functional but not very pretty. Native Union’s Drop charger is the opposite. The tech titan is preparing yourself to release two wearable innovation tools on its updated operating system.

Launched globally earlier thіѕ year, bоth Q Marshal аnd Q Wander wеrе launched іn India late lаѕt month аt а price оf Rs 21,995 each, pitting thеm dіrесtlу аgаіnѕt thе Moto 360 аnd thе Moto 360 Sport .
Bеѕіdеѕ Q Marshal аnd Q Wander, Fossil аlѕо launched 10 mоrе smartwatches аnd fitness bands іn thе country асrоѕѕ іtѕ owned аnd licensed brands -- Emporio Armani, Michael Kors, Misfit, Chaps, аnd SKAGEN. Thіѕ gіvеѕ thе company ѕеvеrаl fallback options іn а market thаt іѕ ѕtіll considered niche. Wе rесеntlу gоt оur hands оn оnе оf іtѕ Android Wear-based smartwatches, thе Fossil Q Marshal. Iѕ thе smartwatch а hit оr аnоthеr mіѕѕ bу thе company, read оur review tо find out.
Design аnd display
Whеn іt соmеѕ tо smartwatch design, companies rеаllу don't hаvе muсh tо play аrоund with. So, mоѕt products еnd uр lооkіng nеаrlу thе same. It's thе minor details аnd thе finish thаt marks а difference. Fossil hаѕ fоllоwеd thе ѕаmе theory аnd hаѕ chosen а simplistic design fоr іtѕ Q Marshal. Thе оvеrаll lооk іѕ similar tо оthеr watches wіth circular dial.
Thе circular metallic case оf thе Fossil Q Marshal іѕ pretty muсh identical tо thаt оf Moto 360. However, lіkе I said, thеrе аrе ѕеvеrаl сhаngеѕ whеn уоu lооk closely. Thе mоѕt prominent іѕ thе grove design surrounding thе dial. It соuld trick уоu аt fіrѕt tо thіnk thаt thе groves rotate lіkе іn Samsung Gear S smartwatches. But thеу don't.
Thе metal build gіvеѕ іt сеrtаіn level оf sturdiness, ѕо thе оvеrаll design gеtѕ а thumbs-up frоm us. Wе received thе Black colour variant аlоng wіth Black Silicone band, whісh tоgеthеr gave аn оvеrаll stealthy essence tо thе Q Marshal. Of course, thе Silicone band іѕ detachable аnd саn bе replaced wіth thе metal band оr thе leather brown strap. Wе lіkе thе Silicone band thаt саmе wіth thе unit.
It's comfortable аnd doesn't irritate еvеn whеn wearing іt fоr hours. Juѕt lіkе а classic analogue watch, thе Fossil Q Marshal аlѕо hаѕ а side crown, whісh аgаіn tricks уоu tо thіnk thаt іt саn bе rotated but unfоrtunаtеlу it's јuѕt а push button wіth limited functions.
Thе Fossil Q Marshal features а 1.4-inch circular LED display wіth 320x290 pixels, tab bit lоwеr thаn thаt оf Moto 360's 1.5-inch 360x330 pixels LCD display. This, however, shouldn't mаkе а difference аt all. Thе touch screen іѕ easily viewable іn bright daylight. But whаt bothered uѕ wаѕ thе flat-tyre display аnd thе extra screen bezels. Fossil could've mаdе аn effort tо remove thе bezels аnd mаkе thе screen lооk slightly mоrе bigger аnd immersive. Thе Huawei Watch's circular display ѕtіll holds thе crown fоr uѕ wіth іtѕ 1.4-inch 400x400 Super Amoled tech.
Thе Q Marshal's display stays іn thе Always-On mode. Yоu саn аlѕо double click thе side button tо completely shut оff thе screen. Long-pressing іt opens thе app menu. Thеrе аrе аlѕо ѕеvеrаl gesture-based functionalities аvаіlаblе іn thе smartwatch ѕuсh аѕ single-handed use, covering thе screen tо dim іt аnd more. Performance аnd battery Thе Fossil Q Marshal runs fluid whеn іt соmеѕ tо thе performance. Engaging wіth notifications, opening аnd working apps lіkе Google Maps, BBC News, Hangouts, Swarm аnd оthеrѕ wеrе glitch-free. Thе smartwatch іѕ powered bу а Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 processor аlоng wіth 512MB RAM аnd 4GB оf inbuilt storage.
Besides, а stutter-free performance, thе smartwatch соmеѕ wіth 20 preloaded watchfaces, mоѕt оf thеm imitate thе lооk оf а classic analogue watch. Switching watchfaces іѕ easy аnd ѕо іѕ navigating thrоugh apps. Fossil uѕеѕ thе pure Android Wear interface wе hаvе ѕееn іn оthеr competing smartwatches аѕ wеll ѕо іtѕ pretty muсh easy tо understand аnd straightforward.
Swiping frоm rіght tо left opens thе app menu аnd swiping tоwаrdѕ rіght gоеѕ оnе step back. At thе home screen, уоu саn аlѕо swipe frоm top tо bottom tо access 'Do Nоt Disturb', 'Sound', 'Cinema Mode', 'Brightness' аnd 'Settings' options.
There's аlѕо in-built activity tracker іn thе Q Marshal. Yоu wоuld hаvе tо connect thе watch wіth thе Fossil Q app аnd Google Fit tо kеер а track. Yоu саn change watchfaces dіrесtlу frоm thе app аѕ well. Thе device іѕ compatible wіth Android OS 4.3 аnd iOS 8 аnd lаtеr OS versions.
Whіlе іt tracks pretty muсh еvеrуthіng -- frоm walking tо cycling аnd mоrе wе wеrе quіtе disappointed wіth thе company's decision tо omit thе heart rate sensors, whісh аrе present іn mоѕt оf thе nеw smartwatches іn thе market. So, mаnу health-conscious users mау nоt find іt thе rіght piece оf wearable fоr them.
Coming tо thе battery оf Fossil Q Marshal, thе company claims іtѕ wearable саn run fоr 24 hours. But thаt іѕ whеn thе device іѕ іn ideal condition. Thе battery life саn vary based оn hоw уоu uѕе it. Fоr us, thе smartwatch ran fоr а lіttlе оvеr 12 hours bеfоrе bеіng charged. Whіlе thіѕ wаѕ оn regular day-to-day usage, heavy users mіght nееd tо charge thе device аftеr 6-8 hours.
In addition, thе Fossil Q Marshal takes аlmоѕt 2 hours tо charge fully frоm 0% tо 100%. It соmеѕ wіth а bundled wireless charger аnd shows uр а dim screen wіth charge percent indicator аѕ ѕооn аѕ іt іѕ kерt оn thе wireless charger dock. Sо all-in-all wе fоund thе battery life оf thе device аlmоѕt thе ѕаmе аѕ ѕоmе оf thе оthеr competing smartwatches. However, іf уоu аrе lооkіng fоr а wearable wіth good battery life, Pebble ѕtіll rules thе game. Verdict Thе Fossil Q Marshal іѕ оnе beautiful-looking smartwatch. Itѕ appealing rugged design аnd thе stainless steel build rеаllу gіvеѕ а premium feel. Attaching а leather strap оr а metal strap furthеr enhances thе looks. Unfortunately, design іѕ whеrе thе game ends.
Thе performance оf thе smartwatch іѕ јuѕt аbоut average аnd raises nо eyebrows аѕ such. Thе simple Android Wear UI іѕ easy tо use, whісh іѕ hоw wе thіnk іt ѕhоuld bе аnd thе battery life іѕ аlѕо nоt muсh impressive.
Untіl аnd unlеѕѕ уоu аrе аll fоr thе design оr аrе а loyal Fossil fan, wе wіll nоt recommend it. If уоu аrе lооkіng fоr а mоrе 'value fоr money' smartwatch іn thе ѕаmе price segment, Moto 360 (2nd gen) іѕ аlrеаdу аvаіlаblе оn ѕеvеrаl ecommerce websites. Sports enthusiasts whо wаnt а health-focused smartwatch, саn gо fоr Moto 360 Sport. Huawei Watch аnd thе Samsung Gear S2 аrе аvаіlаblе іn thе ѕаmе price bracket.

Tymometer Watch Face for Android Wear OS
An hour glass brings a sense of urgency. Sand trickling down slowly is hard to avoid. We tried to bring the same to a digital surface. We were constantly on the lookout for new and unique ideas that would keep this project alive. Our goal was to move away from familiar ways of displaying time and formulate something entirely different. That’s when the possibility of viewing time on a meter struck us, and we created the watchface, Tymometer for your smartwatch. Tymometer indicates time as simply as a digital watch would but it gives your smartwatch a great look with the hour-to-hour scale that runs along the centre. The minutes are distinguishable through a contrasting shade that deftly sweeps across the watchface and takes over at the end of an hour. These features make reading time at a swoop incredibly easy and give your device a striking look. These are the Android Wear smartwatches getting the Wear OS update Google has published a list of devices that will get the Wear OS update. The list does not drastically differ from the list of smartwatches that would get Android 8.0 Oreo. Google rebranded Android Wear to Wear OS, though the changes are mostly cosmetic. Google’s rebranding of Android Wear to Wear OS might not have been entirely surprising, but it was still noteworthy. Less noteworthy are the changes with Wear OS, since there are none. Because of that, Google‘s list of Android Wear smartwatches that will get the Wear OS update is almost identical to the December list of smartwatches that would get Android 8.0 Oreo. A couple of new additions include the Skagen Falster and TAG Heuer Connected Modular 41, as they were announced in the time since that December list. In the early days, there were only a few options, mainly from Motorola and LG. Interestingly, the new Wear OS app does feature some changes, such as improved screen glanceability with darker backgrounds, improved Google Keep experience, and more. Diesel On Smartwatch Review

Diesel On Smartwatch Review
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Made for tech companies, adopted by fashion brands – that is one of the best ways of summarising Android Wear. The platform was first introduced to bring the Android operating system to the wrist, but now that smartphone manufacturers haven’t had much luck appealing to wide audiences, fashion brands are having a go. Popular brands such as Fossil and Michael Kors, most of them under the Fossil Group umbrella, have launched smartwatches including the Q Marshal and Access.
Diesel, a popular name in the fashion industry, also licenses its name to Fossil Group to manufacture watches. It has already had a go at a hybrid watch, the Diesel On, and has now launched an Android Wear model called the Diesel On Smartwatch. Priced at around Rs. 25,000, can it make a strong case for Android Wear? We find out.
youtube
Diesel On Smartwatch look and feel
Diesel watches are known to have big chunky cases and funky bands, and this smartwatch follows the same design principles. The watch has a big 48mm aluminium case that is sure to draw attention. Diesel has gone ahead with a dual-colour design with black machined finish for the bezel while the rest of the body is silver, making it stand out. The display is set lower than the bezel rather than flush with it.
To keep the case and the display safe, there are four sidepieces that also function as a design element. On the right side, these pieces have hardware buttons with the crown in between. On the left, there are has two screwheads and a speaker grille in between. The crown can be pressed and rotated in either direction. If you take a closer look, it also sports the Diesel logo on it. Overall, the design is quite similar to that of Diesel’s analogue watches in the market.
Flip the watch over and you can see that the metal rear cover has an acrylic window in the middle to facilitate wireless charging. Diesel hasn’t let go of a branding opportunity and the charging window has another logo on it. Sadly, the Diesel On Smartwatch misses out on a heart-rate sensor which is fairly common on competitors’ models at this price.
The Diesel On Smartwatch is sold in two variants in India, one with a metal strap and the other with a leather strap. Our review unit had a 24mm leather strap with quick-release pins that make it easy to swap it with any standard 24mm watchband. The leather strap has two screwheads riveted on for looks. The watch weighs around 96g and does make its presence felt on your wrist without really getting uncomfortable.
Diesel On Smartwatch specifications and features
While the design is typical Diesel, the hardware is similar to most other Android Wear devices in the market. The Diesel On Smartwatch is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform and has 512MB of RAM. While this does seem low in comparison to what modern smartphones pack in, it is adequate to run Android Wear 2.0 without any hiccups. There is 4GB of internal storage which can be used to store apps downloaded from the Play Store as well as music if you have subscribed to Google Play Music.
There’s a 1.4-inch round AMOLED display which does not have a flat tyre design like the Moto 360 (2nd Gen), which means the entire display is utilised. There’s an ambient light sensor and so the watch is capable of adjusting its screen brightness based on light conditions. Viewing angles are good and the display is viewable outdoors. There’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, but no GPS or NFC.
Diesel ships a charging cable in the box with a wireless charging pad on one end and a USB Type-A plug on the other. The wireless charging pad looks a lot like the one shipped with the Apple Watch. Charging time depends on the adapter you plug the cable into. We used a 10W charger and it took over four hours to take the smartwatch’s 370mAh battery from flat to full.
Shop On SecondCovers
The Diesel On Smartwatch runs on Android Wear 2.7 on top of Android Oreo. It’s compatible with phones running Android 4.4 or above and also with iPhone models running iOS 9 and above. Diesel has added quite a few of its custom watch faces for you to choose from, and each of them can be tweaked to the minutest detail. You can also download more watch faces from the Play Store. Supported standalone apps such as Telegram can be downloaded and used when the watch is connected to Wi-Fi. For text input, you have the option to trace alphabets, type using an onscreen keyboard, or use speech-to-text.
Diesel has preloaded a few of its own apps, called Dial Effects and Diesel T-ON-I. Dial Effects has Weather Mode, which shows animations to represent the weather at your current location; Activity Mode, which shows how active you are; and Do Not Disturb mode which causes a shatter animation to play every time a notification comes in. If you have been inactive for a while, it fills the watch face with virtual dust. The T-ON-I app conveys information about the weather, current time, and your activity.
Diesel On Smartwatch performance
Android Wear is quite light, and the Diesel On Smartwatch can run it without any issues. We faced no lags but you might occasionally see a loading screen for large apps. While a majority of the watch operations are touch-based, the crown can be pressed in to call up a list of installed apps. Rotating the crown lets you scroll through the list, and pressing it again acts as a Back button. The two buttons on the watch are completely customisable and you can set them up as shortcuts to launch your favourite apps.
Calling is supported on the watch via Bluetooth. However, this isn’t turned on by default and you’ll need to go into the Bluetooth settings menu to do so. Calls can be initiated from the watch and are routed through the paired phone. We had to pull the watch up to our ear to hear what our callers were saying, and they also complained that we sounded tinny. We used a Google Pixel 2 (Review) to test the watch and found that call quality was quite erratic. At times, when answering incoming calls on the phone, neither party could hear the other. We were able to converse when we turned Bluetooth off and just used our phone normally, so to us this seems like an Android Wear issue. While we were able to pair a Bluetooth headset with the watch, we couldn’t use it for voice calling.
Battery life is one area in which the Diesel On Smartwatch falls short. It managed to run for one day with normal usage such as checking notifications and occasionally answering a few calls, with the Always-On mode enabled. With the battery saver mode, the watch managed to go for a day and a half. Overall, battery life isn’t great and the long charging time provides no relief. We would highly recommend charging the watch every night before going to bed.
Verdict Fashion brands have shown a keen interest in wearable tech, and the Diesel On Smartwatch is a fine example of that. It scores in terms of looks, but it does seem overpriced for what it offers. It lacks GPS, NFC, and a heart-rate sensor which are common on smartwatches at this price point. If you are considering this smartwatch, do keep in mind that you are paying more for the brand and the software customisations. If you are using an iPhone, the Apple Watch Series 2 will offer you more value for money despite the slight premium. If you are on Android and are more concerned with functionality than looks, you might want to try to get your hands on the Asus ZenWatch 3 or the Huawei Watch 2 instead.
Price: Rs. 24,495

So I bought a new smart watch while I was overseas.
By overseas I mean Norfolk Island, although it’s just 1600km or so from the Australian mainland.
It was one of those spur of the moment things. I didn’t really need another watch. I have several already, but this one was on special and, well – you can’t have too many watches.
The Fossil Q Marshal Gen 2 is a good looking watch and one that looks like a real watch, not some geeky toy.
It set me back a modest $A255 duty free, but the Q Marshal goes for considerably more than that on line.
After getting it home, though, I’m beginning to wonder if I have bitten off more than I can chew – this watch could be smarter than me.
Like my mobile phone you have to charge it at night and again like my mobile you can alter the appearance electronically, with a zillion different watch face designs to download.
It’s an Android based device that can do a lot of things my phone can, either by itself or in tandem with the phone – I just have to learn how it’s done.
As a brand Fossil makes fashionable, affordable watches that offer plenty of bling and are fun to wear, without worrying too much about losing or damaging them.
It’s not Fossil’s first foray into the smart watch arena.
You might remember the wrist PDA from 2003, a forerunner of today’s smart watches that ran the Palm OS.
The Fossil Wrist PDA released in 2003.
Although I can’t say I owned one the Q Marshal is not my first Fossil, but at 45mm is a little smaller than the others which is a little disappointing.
Because big is better, especially when it comes to smart watches, because more real estate means more precious screen space – screen space as you can imagine is limited.
What it gives away in size, however, the Q Marshal more than makes up for in functionality.
Powered by Android Wear 2.0, the watch is compatible with phones running Android 4.3 and higher as well as iPhone 5/iOS 9+, but the features supported could vary by platform.
All devices feature Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy with wireless B, G and N connectivity.
Using Bluetooth the watch remains connected to my phone and when I receive notifications they are repeated on my watch – both visually and audibly.
With a built-in speaker and microphone, you can even answer phone calls with the watch – although I’ve haven’t been game enough to try this yet.
This microphone means the watch will also respond to voice commands, with Google Assistant ready and waiting – just hold the power button and say “Ok Google”.
Find answers and get things done even when your hands are full. Reply to a friend that you’re running late, remind yourself to call mum or ask for directions.
What it doesn’t and perhaps it should is a heart rate monitor and built-in GPS – but with activity tracking, it can still keep track of my everyday accomplishments including steps, distance and calories burned.
For example, in my other life as a humble courier, I easily clock up 15,000 steps in a day (a fact I’m grateful for because I’m being paid to lose weight).
But, after seeing this number of steps was consistent, I decided it was safer to no longer wear the watch at work because it could easily be damaged – especially the watch face (scratch resistant or not).
Like a phone you can fit screen protectors to watches, either plastic film or tempered glass – but the trick is working out what size to get.
The specs don’t say what size it is and even Fossil support couldn’t tell me when I contacted them – they suggested I measure it!
LOL. Seriously? If they don’t know, who the hell will?
I tried one tempered glass screen, purchased cheaply from eBay, that turned out to be slightly larger than the actual watch face, but was otherwise okay.
It quickly built up a halo of dust on the exposed underside, which wasn’t a major drama in itself- but a couple of days later I realised it had fallen off.
Back to the drawing board.
The other thing I did was purchase a second watch band.
The Q Marshal features a clever quick release system that allows you to change bands quickly and easily. So I got a nice leather strap that combined with a change of watch face makes it dressier when required.
A single charge in most cases lasts an entire day and to recharge the thing you sit it on a small disc that is attached to the end of a USB cable.
Sounds easy but the system can be finicky unless the watch is sitting in exactly the right position otherwise it won’t charge fully – mind you I’m still trying to work out exactly what the correct position is.
Like a mobile phone you can download plenty of apps for the watch from the Play Store, many of which are free – others come at a small charge.
A real party trick is to download a new watch face with your phone and watch it magically replace the current one on the watch – it’s pretty cool (at least the first few times).
Q Marshal is not the most expensive nor the most sophisticated smart watch available, but it looks like a real watch and is kind of cool.
It’s as good a place as any to put a toe in the water.
It and its competitors are sure to get better with each generation.
In fact, as we speak, the next round of Gen 3 watches have already hit stores.
Physically they are slightly smaller and slimmer than mine, with three side mount buttons instead of one – like a traditional sports watch.
The watch faces also occupies the whole screen this time around, losing the small squared off section at the bottom of the screen that people found annoying.
Other than that the specs are the same and both watches seem to do exactly the same thing.
