Heyo!
Thought I'd share a few of my favourite landmarks I like to drop at during games if for some reason anyone wanted unusual drop spot ideas.
My friends complain about my weird spots all the time and then proceed to say, "With that spot, how did we get all this good loot?!" Shocking, eh? YOU followed me there. Don't complain that we lived longer than we did in the spot YOU picked.
There are many other spots you can land at, but these are some of the best places that I've noticed that have very few (if any) others that land there and has pretty decent loot if I say so myself because they are so easily overlooked by the bigger POIs.
See 'Keep Reading' for a slightly more in-depth view of my Top 4 (Yes, four, not five. I'm lazy minus one) favourite spots.
Note: not every spawn listed CAN be guaranteed depending on the rates, so be wary of that!
Fridgeberg:
There's a holo-chest to the EAST of the landmark in the small 'Reality Warriors' building.
2x possible Dirt Bike spawn
A maximum of 4 Oathbound chests can spawn (70% chance, likely there will be at least one)
3x possible safe spawn (2 in houses, 1 near where holo-chest is)
7x maximum chest spawn
5x maximum ammo box spawn
Near the middle of the map, making it presumably easy to rotate in the circle if need be.
Exile Isle + Humble Hamlet:
(Counting these two together since they are two landmarks really close to each other and it's easy to loot one and then swim to the other.)
On the outer edge of the map, incredibly unlikely to come across a player unless it's a bot.
^ like above, since it's on the edge unless your lucky and get a near circle/in the circle it's likely you'll have to do a big rotate first circle.
2x Oathbound chests (1 each, 70% as always, though there is a third one in a hut on the hill to the east.)
Quite a lot of chests! - roughly 20 can spawn, same amount for ammo boxes.
Two holo-chests, one each.
2x Dirtbike spawn within Humble Hamlet - a Bear can be found on the beach towards Frenzy however.
1x Weapon-O-Matic in HH
2x Motorboat spawn
4x possible safe spawn (+ another one near where the Bear might spawn)
Secluded Spire:
2x possible Oathbound chest spawn
One possible dirtbike spawn
Didn't get a hammer or a dirtbike somehow and need to rotate? There's a gas station not far to the west, that or the multiple slap berries around!
Holo-chest
3x possible safe spawns
8x regular chest spawn
Omega Knight NPC spawn (has Port-A-Bunker + Hammer)
Solitary Shrine:
Holo-chest spawn
1x dirt bike spawn
8x slurp barrels
9x possible chest spawns
3x coolers
2x safes
A campfire! For some reason...
11x ammo boxes
And some of my honorable mentions would be; Coastal Battlement, Meadow Mansion (Diamond Diva NPC spawns there) and a tough tie between Royal Ruin & Forest Forge.

okay whatever the event sucked but does epic really think chapter 2 alone isn’t enough to get players?? they really had to shove FOUR musicians in there?? one of which we already had added to the game less than a year ago?? what is actually going on

asteria is really fun but also super freaking intimidating because it feels to me like there's so much more open space or more vantage points so i constantly feel paranoid, the massive sudden drastic changes in geography (like the huge ass dropoffs littering the map) and huge loss of vehicles/quick mobility forcing you to be more cautious about planning your journey because if you don't, you'll either misstep and fall to your death or you'll have to spend time detouring around a steep mountain instead of running or driving through it. like i always feel like i'm in danger of being seen or being stuck
#fortnite#shitposting#i see people complaining that the POIs are kinda samey#true but we have plenty of seasons for that to change

fortnite lore is so funny bc you’ll be doing season voiceline quests and the first character that talks to you will be like “haha fishstick got his head stuck in a toilet go get my plunger from insert poi here so i can get him out!!!” and then the second one will be like “every night I am haunted by visions of a dying island and a godless world. please kill 3 people with this epic suppressed assault rifle.”

This is a stand in ask that I lost. It was about Sonic Frontiers. It was a four-part ask written kind of smugly about the open zone areas of Sonic Frontiers, and how all the random clutter (springs, dash panels, etc.) and high level of scripting/railroading doesn't fit in very well with open world design. They suggested Sega would have to go back to the drawing board and really change the design for whatever follows next.
So I wanted to redo this ask because I feel like I had a pretty good response.
I opened this ask jokingly calling the anon out for sounding a little snooty, because it used some big words. But my main opener was: Haven't you played Super Mario Odyssey? Each level in Super Mario Odyssey is effectively its own little open world, particularly something like Tostarena.
it's this huge area dotted with a town, ruins, and other landmarks, with big stretches of empty space between them. The landmarks are where the traditional gameplay is -- platforming challenges, enemies, puzzles, and so on, and you have to traverse across the desert to reach them.
I also think about Jak & Daxter, maybe one of the first open world platformers ever, and how it has kind of a hub-and-spoke system. Generally you are working out of a base, like a workshop or a village or something, with roads that lead out of, around, and back into that base area (or to other buildings that act sort of like self-contained dungeons).
Each "road" takes the place of a level. Now, there's nothing keeping you on the road, which is part of the fun, since you can cross between roads, go around obstacles, and so on. But roads are definitely setup to guide you through a space like a level would.
And as someone who plays a lot of it, I think in the context of Fortnite, which is this huge island covered in a spiderweb of roads and pathways leading to, from, and around POIs (Points of Interest).
It's a system that drives all good open world design, and was kind pioneered in Disneyland all the way back in the 1950's. Disney didn't call them "points of interest", he called them "weenies" -- big iconic areas that you can see from long distances that are interesting enough to make you want to explore them, while also helping you stay oriented in the overall space.
So take this screenshot of the current Fortnite map:
My car is parked at a crossroads. Directly ahead of me and a little to the left is a shack where Gwenpool is roaming around. Further in the distance is the POI of "Reckless Railways", which houses the map's Grand Central Station, where the train rolls through and restocks its supplies. Further beyond that are the snowy mountains and the massive Grand Glacier hotel. To the far left, on the edge of the image, is the forge at Dr. Doom's castle.
Roads are meant for traveling quickly down. They lead you to points of interest, where you slow down and comb through an area carefully. And, obviously, there's all kinds of little landmarks dotted all over the place between major POIs, encouraging you to get off the road and go exploring. Gas stations and ruins and little shacks and stuff.
It's extremely easy to adapt these concepts to a Sonic game, which is what's so baffling about Sonic Frontiers being such an incoherent mess.
Roads should be your boost Sonic zones. It can't be a random collection of junk, it can't be something you unlock as a means of "fast travel." There has to be an identifiable road, a series of pathways leading you around the island. You put grind rails and boost pads and dash rings along this road. This is where players are supposed to go fast. Roads = travel.
These roads will lead you to points of interest and other landmarks. A POI, like in Super Mario Odyssey, is where puzzles, platforming, and exploration are mostly done. I do not mean "four stone buildings" like in Sonic Frontiers. I mean a place that feels like a place. A location that feels like it has character. Personality. Something you work your way through, absorb, and conquer. Again, like Odyssey.
And then you stash little secrets and landmarks off the beaten path for players who want to go offroading.
2-3 islands per game, 2-3 biomes per island. You can have specific race or time trial missions to and from different landmarks, you can have POI exploration missions, you can have missions to change the state of these POIs like blowing up power plants or unlocking gates. Maybe Eggman has a giant pipe he's using to pump toxic chemicals into the water, so you have to turn off the pump and then you get to run down the inside of the empty pipe like an F-Zero GX track.
It's easy to design this game. You don't even need cyberspace levels. Heck, remember GTA5? Most missions had bronze, silver, and gold medals. You can still have a ranking system in an open world game.
Look, I even drew art of this concept, what, four years ago? five?
Somebody should pay me a livable wage for this kind of stuff

this does not make sense with the Fortnite lore at fucking all. Why is fucking ice spice here??? Why fucking snoop Dogg?? Why Eminem??? They shouldn’t be on the map. I would get it if they were just gonna be in the shop or in the Fortnite festival thing but no they’re gonna have POIs on the map. They look okay but it just feels like Fortnite is just putting shit in that attracts the ppl who don’t play Fortnite. This is just like how they put Peter and that stupid TikTok guy in a battle pass. :-/

Fortnite idea that Epic Games will never do even if it's funny:
In a named location with really tall buildings, install elevators that are entirely separate locations from the main building, leading to a bizarre pocket world inside the elevator where nobody can shoot you out or blow you up.
There's some relaxed Muzak playing in the box. You'll be in there for just a little too long compared to how fast you could sprint down the stairs. Perfect for breaks from combat to heal and reload, even if you can only find elevators in this tall building POI. (They're also perfect for an ironic twist of relaxation if you're getting shot at before you jump in the elevator)

Fortnite Wilds - First Impressions
Loot pool is a STRONG improvement over MEGAs. While I hope we get some kind of mobility item later in the season, the current guns feel like they fit the theme a lot more, and none of them feel too strong or weak. This opinion may change given more time.
The new biome is GORGEOUS. I was really worried from the trailers and screenshots that it'd lack a strong visual identity, and that it'd all end up being that same overgrown temple look. I'm so glad it isn't just that. The new walkable canopy is going to lead to some insane fights in Zero Build, the prop density is insane, there's so many plants and trees making the biome feel properly lush. One of my complaints with the Neo Tokyo biome is that while the POIs were gorgeous, it felt really empty, and there wasn't enough making it stand out from the rest of the map. This biome avoids that problem, the terrain style, plants, etc, all are extremely differnet.
The lore. I'll keep quiet on this because no one wants to hear me nerd out but we're so back chat. I'm actually feeling the fires of speculation burning within me once again, which I haven't felt since Chapter 3 ended.
I've been far more critical of Chapter 4's visuals then most people, but with the new biome, the storm being purple again, the improved volumetric cloud systems (the storm looks terrifying,) it feels more cohesive. I certainly still have some problems, namely the trees, and lack of foliage, but I'm feeling it.
The new mechanics feel really solid. The vines you can grind on feel far more purposefully placed then the grind rails. They'll get you to a good vantage point, or across the biome. The mud makes sliding far quicker, which is great for mobility. The new plants make exploring the biome interesting, especially when you're low on shields. The new vaults seem.. weird, I need to mess with them more.
New augments feel good to use, the current augments list feels great to use, no filler ones. Hope to continue seeing useful and unique ones.
There's a list of new items that look to release this season, and unlike last season, they're not basically all collabs! One thing I'm really excited for is the synergy between the cloaking item and the Thermal DMR. It gives a GOOD REASON to pick up the item, beyond just enjoy how it plays. I love stuff like that, and I wish it was more common.
Job boards are cool.
Negatives:
My frames are so bad bro, constant dips from 60 to the 20s. :skull:
Chances are, we'll get very little map changes again, which kinda sucks.
The Kinetic Boomerang seems, okay? No mobility attached, nothing that really makes it stand out, beyond the fact you don't need to aim.
I've not seen any raptors despite them being one of the advertised features. Might just be me, maybe they don't spawn in the Jungle, for.. some rason.
I'm just not feeling the Battle Pass. I like one skin and set, and that's about it.
Wildwasp's seem completely useless, just like fireflies.
WHY IS SLONE ITEM SHOP GRAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
Losing the Auto Aim Pistol and Shield Kegs sucks, the first was one of the most unique items added in ages, and the other was great for squads.
The lack of any major movement / game feature this season is unfortunate, I was really hoping we'd see one of the leaked features such as First Person, Wall Running, or Hill Climbing releasing. The last one would fit really well with the crumbling item vibe.
There weren't enough unvaults. Things like the Flintknock, Infantry Rifle, etc. would fit perfectly this season. The fact they weren't included makes me really sad. I'm really afraid I'll burnout on the lootpool quick like last season.
Still no LTMs :lunadepressed:
I really should've wrote down notes while playing, cause it was a struggle remembering what I did and did not like. Despite it seeming like there's more negatives, I'm actually feeling really great about the season so far. I think it's gonna be be far better than MEGA was for me.
This is the most excited I've felt about Fortnite since early Chapter 4.
8/10, I hope the rest of the season is as great.
..I need to check out the lighting as well, it looked really foggy and weird in the jungle biome, and I need to know if the rest of the map is like that, or if they fucked with my precious volumetric lighting. We'll see!
