When I consider those words, I have to think of the connection between eternal treasure, the words of the Bible, and the work of the Spirit.

In the epic closing of John chapter 6, our Savior said, ‘It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.’ John‬ ‭6‬:‭63‬‬

If the Bible had a list of ingredients on its back cover, the Holy Spirit would be the first on the list. He fills the pages of Scripture, taking words off a page (or a screen) and planting them like seeds in your heart and your mind. Because he is divinely working, the Bible grabs you in one verse, slaps you to your senses in the next, and allows you to be still and know that he is God before your devotion is over.

WIP Wednesday

It’s Wednesday again! Thanks for the tag, @thequeenofthewinter! I was sick last week, worked over the weekend and then took two more sick days, so my sense of time is completely warped right now and I don’t have anything TES-related to show… but I had dug out my maps and notes for a Weird West homebrew DnD campaign that I started writing way back before grad school. So, uh, have a map I guess?

The campaign takes place mainly in the dying mining town of Copper Creek and is based on the story of the Forrest Fenn treasure (which had yet to be found when I started writing the campaign). It draws heavily on the history, legends, and my own experiences of living in the American Southwest.

Mysterious letters draw a disparate group of adventurers to the town, where they’re given with a series of cryptic clues and set off on a race to track down the hidden treasure of a fabulously wealthy and recently deceased eccentric. Along the way they contend with the challenging environment and monsters living in the desert as well as a zany cast of drifters, grifters, gamblers, and gunslingers. Among others, our intrepid fortune-seekers stumble upon a band of outlaw wizards, an undead undertaker, and a religious mission full of anti-magic zealots. I have the campaign 60%-70% prepared, but all the maps are small-scale sketches in my notebook (the one above is about 4.5”x7”) so I need to redraw them digitally so I can get them printed in a larger format.

forrest used to love airports. there was something about the possibility of them, so many people and so many stories all gathered in this odd liminal space. what kind of things had these walls seen? a be-suited agent in dark sunglasses carrying a stainless steel briefcase containing priceless intel? twin siblings separated at birth, reuniting by pure happenstance? a criminal on the run, looking to start fresh somewhere else, unaware that they’re being pursued by a doggedly determined officer of the law?

all right, so maybe that was fenn’s cinema-saturated brain coloring his perception of reality yet again. but there was so much beauty in the everyday stories, too. he passed a family with young children, all gleefully plan out their theme park adventures; nervous but excited college students embarking on semesters abroad, a couples reuniting after a long separation. 

his heart twisted as he saw that last scenario playing out just as he’d almost reached his gate. he vaguely wondered if jordan would welcome him at LAX with a similar amount of gusto, and if stepping into her arms would make him feel like he was home. but no, he already knew the answer to that, didn’t he? he'd already left home earlier that day, had ached for that sense of comfort and familiarity as soon as he’d said goodbye to dottie. nothing else would make him feel like he was exactly where he was meant to be, and despite the fact that he’d spent years trying to reconcile with that painful truth, he still had miles to go before he slept. he sighed quietly, hitching his carry-on bag further up his shoulder and carrying on further and further away from where he knew he truly belonged.

. I’ve not exactly posted much about one of the most important people in my life right now! INTRODUCING MY MAN!!! Samuel Forrester! He prefers Sam. To me he is my best friend, my crazy person, my rock, my outlet, my comfort blanket, my world, my sunshine on my darkest days, my Dewey to my Gale and my Sora to my Kairi. Over the last 500+ days We’ve gone from being the best of friends, to something more, to then something that will be forever. • Sam invited me out on a date with him October/November of 2021. Due to my heart being repeatedly broken I wasn’t ready emotionally. But that didn’t stop him wanting to hang out, not just with me but with my group of friends too. After a few road trips and little outings as friends, March 2022 he plucked up the courage to again ask if I were able to go on a first official date with him. March 27th 2022 we finally did. Following that date, Every 2 weeks we went on another. Taking it in turns to choose the activity. We even took a week off work visiting other cities, exploring new and old places. We soon made it official, but kept it within our own bubble. After all the greatest of luxuries is your secrets and for us it was just that. By August all of our immediate family knew, Sam and I took another week off and went on several more little adventures with friends and meeting family. Little did I know was already in the mindset of something more. September, He met with my Dad for lunch 👀. October we had a 5 day weekend, we visited the temple, enjoyed thrill-seeking at Thorpe park with friends, had fun scouting for photography locations and then on the 24th of October Sam took me to The Fenn Bell Conservation Project. A small zoo that aim to rescue and enrich the life of wild animals, they look after a variety of animals including 6 gorgeous foxes. My favourite animal is a fox and low a behold Sam had booked a 30 minute experience with the foxes for both himself and I.
