Opportunity For Rahul Dravid To Create Future Champions: VVS Laxman

Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman is of the opinion that Rahul Dravid's appointment as head coach of the Indian team for the Sri Lanka tour is an opportunity for him to create future champions.

"I don't think that there is any pressure (on Dravid). It is an opportunity for him to create future champions of Indian cricket. It is not necessary that everyone will get an opportunity to play in this series. But just spending time with Rahul and sharing his experiences, which is already done with a lot of players in the squad will just enhance their future," said Laxman on Star Sports.

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan said that Dravid is easily understood by youngsters as he brings clarity to the table.

"What Rahul brings in is clear communication. Even when he was the leader of Indian cricket team... at that time also, he was very clear with any youngster. If anyone had any kind of problem, they can go up to him and just talk about it freely," said Pathan.

Pathan went on to remember an incident from 2007 World Cup which gave an insight in Dravid's positive thinking.

"I remember a very small incident from the 2007 World Cup in West Indies. He came to me and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He said, 'Look we are all upset. Let's go for a movie'.

"We went to watch the movie and then he said, 'look, yes we lost the World Cup. We all wanted to make a big difference. But this is not end of it. Life is much bigger. We will come back tomorrow'. That's the kind of character he is. He is always looking to put cricketers in a positive frame of mind. So, if someone unfortunately goes out of form in Sri Lanka...if that happens, he will be the first one to guide him and give confidence," said Pathan.

India will begin their white-ball series in Sri Lanka with an ODI in Colombo on July 13.

Shastri probably forgot to mention one key stat – most of those runs, along with that average, have come on Indian pitches. On home soil, in familiar conditions. But for many, an Indian batsman’s legacy is judged by the way he performs overseas, particularly in the SENA countries. Take the Indian greats, for example. Every one of them. In England, he has played three matches and six innings, scoring 88 runs at an abysmal average of 14.22. In South Africa, he has played just four innings, scoring 74 runs at an average of 18.50. In Australia, his numbers are slightly better – 319 runs at an average of 39.87. Do not forget the fact that 91 of them came in that famous second innings in Brisbane. Some may argue, with a degree of justification, that the sample size is too small. However, there’s more to these numbers. In quite a few of these innings, Gill got good starts. He has looked elegant and fluent before he eventually threw it away. In the third Test of the ongoing series, when Gill walked in at No. 3, India needed runs after the early dismissal of their in-form opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal. Instead, Gill decided to chase a seventh-stump ball and was caught in the slips. And this has been Gill’s story in a nutshell. Indian captain Rohit Sharma repeatedly stressed in his press conferences on this tour that getting set on these wickets and against this bowling attack can be a daunting task. But here’s the thing. If you are set, you have to make good use of it. You cannot throw away starts, as simple as that. And Gill has done that time and again. So much so that it is a pattern now. He has to take responsibility, especially coming in at No. 3 in red-ball cricket in overseas conditions. And he has played at this position for quite some time now. KOLKATA: Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman was retained as the batting consultant of Bengal, while Laxmi Ratan Shukla was appointed as Under-23 coach, marking his return to cricket six years after he joined politics. Shukla had become an MLA from Howrah (North) and later he served as the sports minister under Aroop Biswas.
