We're doing something different because the power sucks. Kathleen lost power and we lost her half of an episode, so we recorded The V Spot: Half Life Edition. Dani and the Silent Producer Andy talk science cheese! It's just 30 minutes and it's not edited! WE'VE GONE WILD!
Dani and Katt are vegans. They take a not-too-serious look at being a vegan in the real world, making jokes, puns, segues, cat sounds, and the occasional good point along the way. If you're a vegan or veg-interested, they're here to help and entertain. Updating every Friday.

The fashion, the music, the films… the 1990’s were a decade full of trends and subcultures that continue to make us nostalgic almost 20 years later. So many iconic songs and movements were derived from the 90’s- from the growth of the grunge scene to the cheesy choreographed boy band music videos, it had never been so easy to be an individual.
I want to start by talking about the popular music from the 90’s. Since I was only born in 1997, I was too young to really grasp anything significant from 90’s culture except for when I re-watch old home videos of baby me dancing to Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” in my living room. Being a huge music enthusiast today, I was baffled by how many hits from such a wide variety of genres we’re released in the 90’s while conducting my research. Grunge, Hip hop, Techno, Rock n’ Roll… the decade had it all. No matter who you were, there was a subculture shaped for you.
Groups like Nirvana, Sound Garden, and Alice in Chains are truly known as the creators of Grunge. Teenagers finally found a group where they felt their individuality and angst could be expressed. Sporting the thrifty look with greasy hair, ripped jeans, and oversized flannels, these rock stars had taken inspiration from Punk, Alternative, and even Classic Rock to create their own little genre.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, the internet and channels like MTV paved the way for Pop to take over the world on a massive scale, reaching more people at once than prior imaginable. Artists like the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC, and Britney Spears took over the digital world with their colourful music videos and choreographed dances. The dance moves from music videos like Bye Bye Bye, or …Baby One More Time are still remembered today by thousands of 90’s teenagers who found themselves watching the videos as a guilty pleasure… Hey, we all did it. However, we cannot forget to mention that our favourite kings of Pop, Michael Jackson and Prince were still releasing hits in the 90’s like Black or White and Diamonds and Pearls.
Tumblr media
Other genres like Alternative Rock, Rave music, and Hip hop all had their time to shine in the 90’s as well. From R.E.M to Public Enemy to Metallica, there was never a shortage of diversity when it came to music. The only problem was finding an efficient way to listen to it all. Though cassettes had already become a thing of the past with the popularity of the portable CD player in the 1990’s, little tapes were still the way to go if you wanted to create a mixtape. Nothing could have been more romantic than giving your loved one a compilation of all your favourite love songs they could listen to on repeat. Just make sure you don’t give your new girlfriend the tape your old girlfriend gave you for your birthday… isn’t that right Mr. Chandler Bing.
And on that note… it wouldn’t be a blog post about the 90’s without mentioning Friends, would it? Airing from 1994 to 2004, Friends just breathed 90’s culture. The Central Perk coffee house, the overalls, the “Rachel Haircut”, and all that denim, it’s hard not to find yourself dreaming about life in the 90’s while watching the iconic television series. That being said, no TV show epitomizes life in the 90’s quite the way The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air does. Flashy oversized sweaters, more overalls, neon colours, and 90’s technology everywhere, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic for a slightly simpler time when it always looks like Will Smith is having so much more fun than we ever do today.
Tumblr media
Sometimes we find ourselves longing for some things that we really hated back in the day… The familiar sound of dial up internet hits us with a wave of nostalgia, but has anything ever been so frustrating? Being forced off of the phone so that dad could… look something up? Did google even exist back then? It was technically created in 1998, so I don’t really know why my parents we’re paying for the exponentially overpriced internet before then. We had a Macintosh computer about 3 feet in depth that weighed a ton which I only remember using to play Bugdom or Snood. Not to mention the boxes of VHS tapes with titles like The Lion King and Mulan. And what an age for film it was! So many classics were released during the 1990’s. We all remember the deafening sound of the production company introductions like the one for THX or Metro Goldwyn Mayer.
The 90’s were responsible for the release of so many incredible movies, so I had to put a little list together because I couldn’t bare to edit it down.
Home Alone (1990)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Wayne’s World (1992)
Juice (1992)
Dazed and Confused (1993)
Jurassic Park (1993)
Schindler’s List (1993)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Forrest Gump (1994)
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Billy Madison (1995)
Toy Story (1995)
Se7en (1995)
Clueless (1995)
Fargo (1996)
Trainspotting (1996)
Titanic (1997)
Rushmore (1998)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Fight Club (1999)
AND SO MANY MORE!!!!!! What a time to be alive.
Today in 2017, the style from the 90’s is definitely coming back full throttle. Brands like Nautica, Fila, GAP, and Tommy Hilfiger are releasing new lines everywhere and sporting 1990’s style with overalls, all denim everything, and light up shoes, it had never been easier to relive the decade. I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing yet, but I am definitely excited.

A playlist of my top 90’s tunes will be up tomorrow so stay tuned!!
