The first time I heard of #ntozakeshange was at my Grandma Betty’s house. My Aunt Diane had a copy of the book and the poster #forcoloredgirlswhohaveconsideredsuicidewhentherainbowisenuf I was too young to fully understand the book but when no one was around I would read sections of it out loud. In 1998, I interned at @beaconpress and the only other black person there was an editor. I was helping to prepare for new releases. I saw #ntozakeshange had a book coming out. I gushed about how for colored girls changed my life. She wrote down Ntozake’s address and encouraged me to write and tell her. I never did. I’ve always regretted that. Back then (even now), writers like her were my life line. Her words gave me hope when I was in a hopeless situation. Although she may be physically no longer with us, her words, his influence live on in my writers like me.
