With so many sad things going on in the world I want to send out as much beauty as I can here on my Instagram account in the hope that it brings a smile to someone’s face and maybe even a ray of hope. We had a tornado warning here in Austin on Monday, which I never expected to happen, and after 45 minutes sheltering with our dogs in a coat closet under a staircase in the middle of our house the warning was lifted and nothing happened in our direct neighborhood. Unfortunately, Round Rock, a small town close by famous for its antique fairs, wasn’t that lucky. They experienced a tornado touchdown and with that quite a bit of damage but to my knowledge no lives were lost. My heart goes out to the residents of Round Rock! With the weather patterns creating the tornado came some much needed rain to Austin and my garden starts to green up a little. No open daffodils yet, but different from a week ago I can now see some daffodil flower stalks coming up. Much less than I planted though, which is a bit disappointing, but I can’t wait for these to open up. The tête-à-tête daffodils and tulips that you see in this photo were forced bulbs from the grocery store. So worth buying for me since I am longing for some cheerful blooms in my garden so badly! Roots gone wild! This is only 4 days growth. I'm forcing Paperwhite Narcissus and also amaryllis bulbs for my November 13th presentation on holiday plants at our county extension office 🌱 I normally would never start them this early...it feels so odd! 💜🍃💜 I am starting the dance of the potted bulbs right now. These have been undercover in my garage… So as to keep a little moisture in and critters out… And today I’m taking a peek to see how they are progressing. The hyacinths are really starting to explode and I see some tulips starting to peek out their little nubs. I’m going to give them a light water and then put them back into the garage until the temperatures moderate. We’re supposed to get a rain today and then extreme cold tonight.I’ll keep them tucked in the garage for a little while and then bring them out for good soon, especially the ones that are starting to show rapid growth. These white narcissuses have been blowing me away with their beauty and fragrance and I simply wanted to share them with you! Since I wasn’t home for most of the autumn I couldn’t force my own and bought these pre-forced at the grocery store. I find it a bit nostalgic in the best possible way to force bulbs indoors or buy them pre-forced to have them ready to bloom in the winter months. It is always a bit of a gamble if they flower at Christmas, though. For me it has become a bit of a tradition to have some forced bulbs indoors at this time of the year. Besides narcissuses my other favorites are hyacinths and amaryllises. Are you forcing or buying forced bulbs for winter or specifically for Christmas?
