The Autumnal Equinox is the time of year when daylight and nighttime are equal. After the Autumnal Equinox, the darkness will begin to win the battle, gaining an extra minute or so every day as we progress towards winter. Now is the time when nature begins to slow and the harvests become less plentiful. Though the autumn equinox can arrive as early as September 20th or 21st depending on solar patterns, this year it falls on September 22nd. So get ready to celebrate!

Like most Sabbats that are celebrated later in the year, the autumn equinox is about reflection and letting go of that which does not serve us any longer. It's a chance to slough off the old and prepare for rest. We clean out that which piled up during the business of summer and store up that which we will need for our winter rest. The colors of the Autumn Equinox are just as rich and warming as the colors of autumn—deep crimson, vibrant orange, lustrous gold, and earthy brown. If you're planning a feast, make sure to include all the fall bounties as well as late summer fruits and vegetables. Pumpkin, squash, berries, nuts, and corn are all fantastic inclusions. MAKE POPCORN

What's more cozy than snuggling under a blanket with a big bowl of buttered popcorn? Of course, you could always watch a movie, but why not take your treat outside to watch nature instead? Inhale that fragrant autumn air. Really take a few moments to appreciate the breathtaking hues of the trees. Watch the birds and squirrels as they prepare for winter. Simply take in the magnificence of the season. And if you're in a generous mood, leave a few un-buttered pieces of popcorn for the critters.

BALANCE YOUR CHAKRAS 

The Autumn Equinox is a time to find balance in your life. But while we tend to immediately think of time constraints as a place to find balance (work versus family time, family time versus self-care), when was the last time you balanced your spiritual centers?If you're not familiar, chakras are points of energy on the body that have spiritual as well as physical impact. When they are balanced, life is good. When they are imbalanced, we have unwanted manifestations, such as illness and financial troubles. The good news is balancing them is as simple as taking a few minutes for visualization! Like any visualization, chakra balancing gets easier with practice, so don't feel discouraged if you have trouble focusing during your first go around or two. A nice, simple chakra meditation can be found on YouTube. Get a blanket, find a quiet spot under a tree, and take some time to balance your chakras this Mabon! You'll be glad you did. HAVE A PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE

Admittedly, this suggestion is a little self-benefiting. But what's autumn without a warm drink laced with cinnamon and nutmeg? You can certainly buy one at your favorite coffee shop, but why not make one? I'm betting you already have the ingredients on hand. Take the time to really savor the process. Inhale the nutty aroma of the coffee before you brew it. Watch as the creamer turns your drink into a rich caramel color. Savor the first sip without scarfing down the entire drink. Life is a lot more pleasurable when we take time to relish the things we enjoy. Sit outside with your homemade brew, breathe deep inhalations of that luscious autumn air, and simply BE.

FOCUS ON GRATITUDE AND THANKSGIVING

With Autumn Equinox being a time of reflection and balance, what better way to celebrate than to make a list for all that you are thankful for? Take a notebook to the park and make a list of everything you appreciate—from big things, like your family or health, to small things, like hot cocoa and fuzzy slipper socks. Feeling crafty? Make a gratitude tree! Simply find a funky fallen twig that has lots of little branchy offshoots to hold your leaves. Place the twig (or twigs) in a pot of stones so it's standing upright, like a miniature dead tree. Collect fallen leaves or cut your own from construction paper. Write something you're grateful for on each leaf. Tape on a loop of string or thread, and hang the leaves from your twig! Beauty and function— my favorite!And remember, crafts don't need to be limited to children. Our children are grown and gone, yet we make a gratitude tree every year for Thanksgiving by adding one leaf a day for each day in November leading up to the big feast! Festiveness isn't just reserved for those too young to drive. Embrace life! Live it with all you've got! And don't forget to be grateful!

BRING IN SOME NATURE 

If you're anything like me, you're just itching to get something decorative in your home this fall. We don't really get in to decorating for Halloween with ghosts and goblins because we don't celebrate the way that most people in America do. We celebrate it the Christian way, not the pagan way. Why not take a nature walk and collect whatever beautiful, natural treasures you stumble upon? Colored leaves. Acorns. Gnarled twigs. Pine cones. Cool rocks. Bring a bag and collect whatever catches your eye. Arrange it on a table or counter top when you get home, throw in a candle or two (maybe gold and red) and you've got yourself an instant natural Mabon altar! You can even leave your natural masterpiece up for a few weeks as a spectacular (and FREE!) fall decoration!

WELCOME IN THE DARKNESS 

As the sun sets on the Autumn Equinox, we welcome in the darkness of the coming season. Grab a blanket, some lawn chairs, and allow yourself to be fully in the moment as the sun sets this equinox. Once the orange globe has dipped below the horizon, breathe in the darkness of fall and honor the tranquil introspection this season inspires. With tea, of course!

BRING ON THE COZY 

Having spent most of my life in Texas, what I miss most about autumn is the coziness. Soft sweaters. Knitted throws. Hot drinks. Crisp morning air. Chilly noses on rainy days. Envelop yourself in the coziness of autumn, even if, like here in Texas, you are still running the air conditioner and suffering in 90 degree weather. Whether that means decorating your home in autumnal flare, lighting a pumpkin-spice candle, or baking a cinnamon-scented apple pie, do something special that puts you in that autumn state of mind.

TAKE IT IN

The best part of autumn is undoubtedly the simplicity. Life seems to slow down just a little, following the graceful dance of nature herself. Take the time to slowdown alongside her. Treat yourself to a pumpkin latte, head over to your favorite park or even your own backyard, and just exist. Watch the passersby as you sip your drink. Observe the colors of autumn, the slight crisp that's beginning to blossom in the air, the chatter of birds as they prepare for winter. Breathe deep. Slow your mind. Just exist. It's something we don't do often enough, but fall is most definitely the time for it!

FIND BALANCE

 Whether autumnal or vernal, equinoxes are the perfect opportunity to find balance, just like nature! If you've been doing a little too much of anything—eating, working, worrying, whatever!—now is the time to take a step back and evaluate how to change your behavior in favor of a more healthy approach. Remember, anything in excess is damaging. Even drinking too much water will kill you.I know! Crazy, right?!If you find it difficult to disconnect from work. If your vice is copious amounts of sugar. If exercise has become obsessive. If spending has exceeded income, take the time to make positive changes. NOT to belittle and berate yourself. NOT to feel guilty and swim among the self-loathing waters. Objectively look at the situation, find a reasonable solution, and make changes. Shame doesn't fix the problem. It's a warning bell that alerts us to the need for change. Nothing more. Take a deep breath of that fresh autumn air and start again. You've got this!

CINNAMON FLAMES

Autumn seems to bring out the craving for bonfires and campfires. If you're lighting one up this Autumn Equinox, toss in a couple of cinnamon sticks for good luck in the coming season. Plus your backyard will smell heavenly!

Spiritual Spotlight: Barzahk the Passage

Obedience: Walk a road for an hour and keep a constant eye out for signs of fallen travelers or roadside graves. Tend to any of either you find. Benefit: Gain a +4 insight bonus on Survival and Knowledge (Geography) checks to find locations and to avoid becoming lost, as well as on saving throws against magical effects which would cause you to become lost (such as Maze or the Primeval Landscape ability of the Whisperer).

(*IMPORTANT NOTE: The Subdomains are my best guess; Subdomains are not listed in Concordance of Rivals.)

Step 1) Don’t get arrested, stuck in a dungeon, or trapped too far away from civilization.

Step 2) Fail step 1.

Not an easy Obedience to perform if you’re the types to wander into the untamed wilds or find yourself frequently trapped in locations where you have no easy access to a road. A lot of Obediences that rely on terrain being nearby are brutal if you’re on the march or are pinned in one inconvenient location for a while, and this one is especially painful because going into the untamed wilds is a thing adventurers do regularly.

However, if you’re in a relatively urban environment and can come and go as you please, this Boon is a complete non-issue. In addition, if you’re actually traveling via the roads, you can very easily do this Boon alongside your normal marching. Also note that the wording of this Boon basically means you can walk a half-hour on the right side of the road, and a half-hour on the left to save your party the frustration of tracking you down each day. Technically you can walk in a 10 or even 5 minute loop, as well, but that’s against the spirit of the Obedience and Barzahk may not take kindly to that.

This is probably one of the easiest Obediences to hide, by the by, especially if your travel is uneventful. You’ll just seem altruistic! Just... try not to get discouraged if that ‘fallen’ traveler suddenly leap up with a knife as his buddies emerge from the roadside. It’s likely only going to be a one-off incident. I’d discourage making “tend to” into a deadly euphemism, but would understand if you get ambushed one too many times. I’m sure Barzahk would, too.

Boons are gained slowly, gained at levels 12, 16, and 20. Servants of the Monitors, though, can enter the Proctor Prestige Class as early as level 8. If entered as early as possible, you can earn your Boons at levels 10, 14, and 16. You MUST take the Monitor Obedience feat, NOT Deific Obedience. Monitors grant only a single set of Boons.

SECOND NOTE: Barzahk is unique in that they’re the only Usher who has had their Boon set expanded upon. Without the DMs permission, you will only be able to take the Exalted set if you enter the Proctor class.

EVANGELIST

Boon 1: Know Who Passed. Gain Alarm 3/day, Perceive Cues 2/day, or Speak With Dead 1/day.

Ooh, I never even heard of Perceive Cues until today! It’s definitely one of those ‘would never prepare, but would love to have‘ spells that gives you a nice and chunky +5 bonus to Perception and Sense Motive for a whopping 10 minutes/level. As Perception is the most-rolled skill in the game, slapping it on just before creeping into a spooky manor or dingy cave can save you a lot of headaches. The bonus to Sense Motive is also useful when dealing with NPCs, sniffing out lies or hidden information.

Speak With Dead holds the distinction of being either useless or scenario-defining, though it’s certainly useful in situations where you stumble upon a scene of carnage or slaughter all the guards in an area after forgetting to interrogate them. Alarm has its niche uses as an emergency alert when you’re camping, or to alert you to someone following behind you, but I’d prefer to just have Perceive Cues most days.

Boon 2: Wings of the Wanderer. As a standard action, you may assume the form of a Giant Raven as if using Beast Shape II, and may remain in this form for 1 hour per HD you have; this time need not be consecutive, but must be used in 1-hour increments. While in this form, you have the raven’s Scavenger ability, a +2 insight bonus to your AC, and a +3 insight bonus to Perception checks. In addition, as a standard action, you may consume 1 hour of the transformation’s daily allotment to cast Enlarge Person or Reduce Person on yourself as a spell-like ability.

You ever wanted to be a bird? Now you can be! You start at 14 hours of birdyness and that only goes up from there, which is a GENEROUS amount of bird-being--a little over a typical adventuring day! Thankfully, it gives you something to spend all your Bird Points (BP) on in the form of letting you shrink or grow as you see fit, letting you put the Giant Raven’s stabbing beak to good work. More importantly, though, is the fact you can shrink yourself down to around normal bird size (ravens are a lot bigger than most think) to elude suspicion as you flit around an enemy’s encampment and see what they’re up to.

With the raven’s 60ft fly speed, you can also use it as an emergency escape button to flit out of danger’s path... But try not to get trapped in combat anyway, because once you go black(bird) you have to wait a whole hour to go back(bird). Using this ability in combat is almost never worth it unless your enemy is scared of ravens specifically, and while its scouting potential is incredible, the fact you’re stuck as a bird for an hour will prevent you from acting on what you’ve learned or even relaying what you’ve learned unless someone knows Speak With Animals.

Boon 3: Terrain Dominance. For every 5 HD you have, you gain one Terrain Dominance as if you were a Horizon Walker; you do not need to have the Terrain Mastery class feature to select a dominance. If you do not have a Favored Terrain bonus from another source, treat your Favored Terrain bonus as +2 when dealing with creatures native to the terrains over which you have dominance; you do not otherwise gain the benefits of Favored Terrain.

Oooooh, lovely! Terrain Dominance has some juicy selections in it, such as the Astral Plane (which lets you use Dimension Door 3 + Wis mod times/day), the Plane of Fire (Fire Resistance 20), mountains (DR 2/adamantine), and the Plane of Air (Fly as a spell-like 3 + Wis mod times/day). You get one dominance for every 5 HD you have, beginning at 3 and maxing out at 4, which is actually one more than the Horizon Walker gets for going through its entire class!

And then there’s the nice little bow on top with “you get +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks, as well as attack and damage rolls against creatures native to your selected terrains” written on it in very, very small letters. On the other side of the bow is some fine print that reads “I’m not sure if you can select new dominances each time you perform the Obedience or not but I’d love it if you could.”

Huh! Weird! That’s just what I was going to say! It’d make you a hell of a lot more flexible than the Horizon Walker is regularly, too... to the point I’d almost say ‘no you can’t change’ just to throw the poor class a bone. You may want to beat the class to death with a bone, though, and in such a case I won’t stop you! Custom tailor yourself for every day you face, and every terrain you embrace!

EXALTED

------

Boon 1: Prepared Traveler. Gain Adjuring Step 3/day, Animal Messenger 2/day, or Phantom Steed 1/day.

Three niche spells, nice! Animal Messenger allows you to hypnotize a tiny critter and send it off on an errand for you, usually to deliver a small object to a specific location, but how often are you going to need to do that? You’re more likely to need Phantom Steed, a spell I’ve covered several times already but to reiterate: it’s great if only you and maybe one other person need to get somewhere quickly, but for someone who regularly travels around with a party? It’s usefulness is crunched unless everyone else in the party has a method of keeping up with your sweet ride.

Adjuring Step is a spell we haven’t yet seen, and it’s an interesting one for a caster. It allows you to take two 5-foot steps a round while preventing someone from taking an Attack of Opportunity against you once you do... But the effect breaks if you move more than 5ft with your move action, cast a harmful spell, or take an attack action. This limits its usefulness somewhat, especially since a DM may rule any spell which deals no hitpoint damage but still inhibits an enemy’s functions (even something as relatively innocent as Obscuring Mist) is still ‘harmful.’ If they rule ‘harmful’ only pertains to spells which deal damage or directly prevent a creature from moving or attacking, then Adjuring Step becomes MUCH better, letting you slide on out of a typical Medium enemy’s attack radius without getting slapped for your cowardice.

Of course, if your DM does rule ‘harmful’ includes any stifling of the senses, you can still use this ability to protect yourself while buffing allies.

It’s still not especially useful since it takes a full standard action to cast and prevents you from repositioning quickly without losing the effect, but if you find yourself always in an enemy’s Pain Zone, then you may consider taking it with you. 

Boon 2: Seasoned Traveler. You no longer take nonlethal damage from moving at a hustle overland. You gain Endurance and Nimble Moves as bonus feats.

“Hustle” is moving about twice your normal walking speed, by the way. This ability grants you the ability to briskly jog for an infinite amount of time, which is impressive from an athleticism standpoint but basically useless for the average adventurer since A) Your party will lag behind your superhuman stamina, and B) If you alone need to get somewhere quickly, you’ll usually know ahead of time and can prepare Phantom Steed.

Endurance and Nimble Moves are decent quality-of-life feats that are incredibly dull to have as a divine boon. Endurance gives you a +4 bonus to saves versus an enormous amount of environmental factors, such as holding your breath, swimming against the tide, staying awake while fatigued or exhausted, or surviving on little food or water. Nimble Moves gives you the ability to ignore a single 5ft square of difficult terrain, a benefit so minor that it’s basically worthless, the feat itself only existing as a tax for fatter feats... Such as Acrobatic Steps, which gives you an additional 15ft of uninhibited movement.

THAT would be a good Boon, honestly. Or just do away with the feats altogether and give the worshiper difficulty-free movement. As it is, this Boon is incredibly disappointing.

Boon 3: Into the Dead Roads. 1/day as a full-round action, you can open a door to the Dead Roads and guide others with you to cross huge distances or travel the planes. This duplicates the effects of a Shadow Walk with a caster level equal to twice your Hit Dice. Alternately, you may use this ability as Plane Shift; in this case, the effect is not instantaneous, requiring 2d6 hours of travel by foot to arrive at a random point on the target plane.

The Dead Roads are the domain (or the true body) of Barzahk, and connect every plane that bears life to one another. With this, you can fling open the door and waltz on through whenever you feel like! Shadow Walk allows you to travel at the breakneck speed of 50 miles an hour and, thanks to this ability, has a double-take-worthy 2 hours/level of travel time. That’s 36 hours of travel at 50 miles an hour, or a grand total of 1,600 miles. That’s a little over halfway across America east-westwise, or all the way from Mexico to Canada north-southwise! WITHOUT having to deal with any inconvenient terrain, traffic jams, or highwaymen! “But what about--” Your Obedience? Good news! The Dead Roads count as a road for the purposes of your Obedience, and the personal stretch that you open up with this power is unlikely to have fallen travelers or gravesites to distract you from your journey.

Just make sure everyone goes to the bathroom and packs some snacks before going, because 36 hours is a while.

Also, as I covered way back in Ng’s article, having Plane Shift without the restriction of needing the attuned forks is a pretty nice tool to have, letting you throw open a doorway to anywhere you know of... But the 2d6-hour travel time kills its offensive uses, limiting it solely to a method of getting from Point A to Point B.

SENTINEL

------

Boon 1: Find the Lost. Gain Tireless Pursuit 3/day, Locate Object 2/day, or Follow Aura 1/day.

Niche gods will always have niche spells, I suppose. Tireless Pursuit is a little insulting because it reveals that Seasoned Traveler is the equivalent of a level 1 spell... And in fact Tireless Pursuit is better since it protects from forced marches as well. Hrm. Still falls into the same trappings, though, especially since it’s personal use only. Ew.

Follow Aura gives you the power to literally sniff out Chaos, Law, Good, or Evil, making you an expert at tracking down shapeshifting Outsiders or sniffing out items or spells bearing such a stench, but you must know what alignment you’re looking for (you can choose only one aspect) and it’s really only good if you have a few ranks in Survival to track the target. In addition, it has no effect on mortals who are just plain Evil or Good or what have you unless they have a palpable aura of alignment. It can only trace moderate or stronger auras, meaning that it’s usually only Outsiders or magic.

So that leaves Locate Object, a spell which does exactly what it suggests. It gives you a Long (400+40ft/level) ranged bubble that detects any one object you can visualize in your head, or the closest item matching a generic description. The radius is wide enough to catch a thief on the run but likely too small to sense a quest objective, plus it’s blocked by any amount of lead (much like other Locate/Detect spells) and any villain locking up a plot coupon will likely lock it up in a lead-coated box.

All three of these spells are of incredibly niche use, which as I’ve mentioned before, makes is difficult to know which one you’ll actually need on a given day. I’d probably pack Locate Object, just in case.

Boon 2: Studied Hunter. For every 5 HD you possess, you gain one Favored Enemy and a +2 bonus on Survival checks to track creatures of that type/subtype, as well as on Diplomacy, Heal, Knowledge, and Sense Motive checks regarding them, and a +1 dodge bonus to AC against attacks of creatures of that type/subtype.

So when you first get this Boon, you gain two Favored Enemies and have a +4 bonus on a bunch of skill checks and +2 AC versus them. Once you hit level 20, this is four enemies, a +8 bonus on all those skill checks and a +4 AC! Since you’ve selected your Favored Enemies likely long after the campaign has begun, you’ve also probably gotten a pretty good idea of what you’re going to face! This blessing is beautifully beefy, but you may notice that it doesn’t confer the damage boost against the enemy, trading that off for additional AC instead. A good enough trade, I’d say, because it’s a dodge bonus, so it applies to your touch AC AND--more importantly--stacks with any other dodge bonuses you may have!

You may also notice that these skills are mostly defensive and combat-avoidant, rather than the more offensive and sneaky skill bonuses the Ranger normally gets (Diplomacy instead of Bluff, Heal instead of Perception, etc). And I like that! Because Barzahk is about defending the Dead Roads from invaders, not hauling off and viciously tracking the invaders back in their home. These abilities make you better at resolving things peacefully with your chosen foes... And, especially in the case of Heal, allows you to better tend to the travelers you meet as you walk the worldly roads.

Also, much like with Terrain Dominance, it’s not entirely clear whether or not you can swap your selected foes each time you complete this Obedience. For the sake of game balance, I’d say ‘no.’

Boon 3: Warden of the Ways. You no longer need to drink, eat, or sleep to survive, though you must still rest with only light activity for at least 2 hours a day to renew your spells. While on a road, pathway, or tunnel, you gain DR 4/—; your DM has final approval over what qualifies as a road, pathway, or tunnel.

Speaking of defensive abilities, how would you like insurmountable DR when battling on your home turf? This ability makes you a truly tireless Sentinel of all paths you cross, removing your needs and allowing you to focus fully on your duties. Note that resting for 2 hours is only needed for restoring your spells, by the way, because if you have no spells to prepare then you technically never have to lay down. The biggest issue you’ll face is what to do while the rest of your party is snoozing, so perhaps doing a perimeter sweep for your Obedience’s sake would be nice? Or you can spend your day adventuring, and your nights crafting.... Oh yes, yes I like that. When is downtime for you? Every night!

Becoming needless is a decent enough Boon if you can take advantage of the extra hours in your day, and the recharge after only 2 hours (remember that almost every caster cannot regain spells more than once in a 24 hour period) of light activity is definitely something to keep in mind, but that would still make this Boon a weak one to end on, which is why Barzahk also grants you a massive (for a player) 4 DR that can only be bypassed by abilities that specifically bypass DR. While 4 DR isn’t exactly jaw-dropping, that still means you’ve essentially gained what a Barbarian waits 16 levels for, WHILE multiclassing! And unlike a Barbarian, Sentinels are proficient with heavy armor and tower shields to make damaging them as frustrating as possible.

... Of course, there’s the small but unfortunate detail that you only HAVE this bonus while on some sort of connector. While a common enemy may be dumb enough to fight you on your own turf, you’re probably not going to be brawling with actual threats in hallways, meaning this ability shuts off for most boss battles and set encounters. You’ll have to work to drag your foes into the narrow walkways from which you draw your resilience, but try not to stress too hard about it, because remember that magical damage typically ignores DR unless it deals physical damage. If you’re facing enemies wielding powerful magic, you don’t have to worry about making your way back onto the beaten path. You’re just as vulnerable as everyone else!

I became a veterinarian because I adored animals and could not think of another career that would be as rewarding.  I developed a fascination with the science of animal behavior and learning for a pupil, and a veterinarian, I observed that a number of my patients had behavior issues or could at least gain from behavioral management.  Once left unaddressed, and/or mismanaged (even by people with the best of intentions), behavior problems worsened, damaging the relationship with the proprietor.  This really drove home to me the importance of the area of veterinary behavior.

Many pet purchases are impulse buys.  A purchaser can be carried away by just how cute the puppy seems and neglect to think about what it'll be like when it grows up (bigger, stronger, more active, etc.).  Behaviors which are cute in a pup (chewing, jumping up, barking, pulling on a leash, etc.) tend to be unacceptable in a dog.  People may also not look at the depth of the commitment when getting a puppy or dog.  Dogs may live well into their teens, and also an owner should know that they will have the time, physical and financial resources, etc., to look after a dog for his entire life.

All dogs have physical demands (like exercise, toileting, eating, drinking, etc.), however, people sometimes forget that they also have behavioral needs (for social interaction, mental stimulation, etc.).  A dog also needs help learning how to behave in and out of his home and what's secure and what is not in his environment.  If the owner isn't meeting the puppy's behavioral needs, he will find an outlet for them independently.  The result might be pretty undesirable!

People also often select a puppy or puppy based on the look of the breed or on a romanticized idea of exactly what the breed/dog would be like.  Think about that:

(a) How a puppy of a given breed is shown on TV, at the movies or in books Isn't necessarily the way that strain (or any actual puppy ) will be;

(b) Breed fanciers, books or web sites may Emphasize the positive qualities of this strain, but may not mention temperament, activity level, or other features that could be challenging for an average proprietor;

(c) Dogs of a specific breed can vary markedly.  By way of example, dogs bred to work (hunt, herd, do military/police-type actions, etc.) are typically very active and require significant exercise and mental stimulation.  Dogs of the identical breed, bred for conformation or puppy functions, may be a lot less work to get an operator.  Dogs bred carefully and selectively for certain traits of this breed also differ from those consumed by so-called"backyard breeders" or puppy mills.  Nonselective breeding makes for much more variability and you also may not get what you expect!

Keeping in mind activity level, can you suggest some breeds you would recommend for a retired couple who want to travel and take their dog ?

An individual ought to be careful making assumptions about a puppy based on its own breed, since the individual might not be typical of this breed.  It's probably most important that the dog be comfortable in changing environments and meeting different people and animals.  These characteristics are not specific to particular breeds but could be decided by getting an adult dog whose character is somewhat understood or a pup whose relatives' personalities are known.  If the retired couple is looking for a quiet dog with limited exercise needs, they likely wish to steer clear of terrier types (which are often quite busy ), and other breeds with high workforce, such as herding (e.g., border collie) or some sporting dogs (e.g., German short-haired pointer), or any dog from working lines.

When one adopts a rescue dog what kind of socialization pattern do you recommend originally?

Puppies go through a sensitive period for socialization when they're developmentally prepared to learn about what is safe and what is not in their own world.  This really is between about 3 and 12 weeks old.  If one gets a puppy, the owner should benefit from that period.  If a person adopts a dog which has passed this age, socialization will not have exactly the same impact on the dog's behaviour.  An older puppy or adult dog can learn from his adventures but he is not as a"blank slate."  Attempts to socialize a dog may not be appropriate if he's already fearful of, or even competitive toward, certain people or animals.  If that's the scenario, it might be best to seek out the help of a veterinary behaviorist.

Socialization refers to controlled optimistic (not impartial, and certainly not unpleasant) vulnerability to various individuals, animals and environment, so the puppy learns that meeting new people and going to new areas is nice, not scary.  It also involves avoiding anything which may make the puppy feel anxious or frightened.  These principles may also be applied to introducing an older puppy or adult dog to new people and dogs.

Having a new dog, introduce people, creatures and encounters gradually and in a controlled manner, to see the way the dog handles them.  Examples of things to prevent, at least initially (since they may be overwhelming to your puppy, and so a terrible experience), are: taking him to the dog park (too many excited dogs might snore on him) and taking him into a block party (too many adults and children for one to restrain his encounters with them).

To prevent forcing a preconceived protocol in your recently adopted rescue dog, how long should you give it before deciding a course of socialization?

Part of keeping good social behavior is planning interactions with people and animals, and tracking themto promote positive experiences and avoid bad ones.  This means introducing the dog to people and to animals you know will not hurt or scare him.  With a new puppy, one might not have to wait long to have him meet creatures and people outside the household.  When he seems quite settled in his new home (which may be when the afternoon after he arrives), then you may start arranging for him to meet some of your pals and their (dog-friendly) dogs.

When family members work or are in school all day, do you recommend choosing a dog walker through the day to maintain a puppy aroused?  And, if so, is it better to hire a walker that might be bringing other dogs along or if he/she go it alone with your puppy?

This will be dependent on the puppy's age and toileting needs, as well as his or her temperament.  A young puppy will need to have regular toileting opportunities (because he can not be expected to"hold it" for more than the number of hours equivalent to the number of months of age, and one).  If you're thinking about a dog walker for an older puppy or dog, that person ought to be carefully interviewed to determine what he/she will do with your dog.  For example, will he/she walk him or let him out to relieve himself and then play with him in the lawn?  Will he/she bring different critters together?  How many, and will they be the same individuals?  Consider whether this will be a positive experience for your dog.  Remember that multiple dogs imply a higher chance of fights/injury and that your pet walker will not be able to devote as much individual attention to your dog.  It's also important to figure out the puppy walker's coaching plan and also to make sure he/she isn't likely to become disciplining (punishing) him inappropriately.

If you should invent 1 dog toy which would address several behavioral problems what would it be?

There's no single dog toy that can provide a fast cure for many behavior issues.  However, interactive toys (such as food puzzle toys that produce the dog function to get his treats) can certainly help to use up excess energy or occupy your pet when you're busy.  Various types of such toys exist, and dogs have individual preferences (one toy does not fit all).

Retired racing greyhounds make great pets and many become consummate couch potatoes.  Is there an action and surroundings you recommend for new owners to interact and socialize with them in the general public?

Groups which adopt retired racing greyhounds frequently require the puppy not to be off-leash except at a fenced-in area (to avoid the dogs from becoming hurt or lost if they take off after something they see).  Otherwise, owners can do exactly the very same things they want with another type of dog, depending on the individual dog's character.  Owners of retired racing greyhounds may also be able to network with other greyhound owners to get group actions.  Play dates with dog friends in a fenced yard or other place, are great.  Walking on leash or more structured dog activities such as nose or agility function are other options.

Because many owners are fair-weather forms, what do you recommend if their exceptionally sociable dog that's been walked every day in spring, summer and autumn, suddenly finds itself relegated to the house for extended hours, becomes bored and begins destructive behaviour?

It is important to pre-empt this kind of scenario by foreseeing the dog will require something to perform.  On days when the weather prevents the owner from taking the dog out for exercise, interactive activities with the proprietor (s) are a good substitute.  You can think of it as taking time you would typically spend on the walk and spending it upon play or reward-based training in the house (for instance, you could try suggestion coaching ).  This provides exercise, mental stimulation and interaction on you, just in a different context.  You can even supply independent activities for your dog (for instance, giving him food mystery toys).  And there is also the choice of classes in a doggy activity that interests you both.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

When getting a puppy do lots of research to be certain you are getting one that will complement your lifestyle.  Place him up for success by planning ahead to meet his behavioral needs.  This means giving him acceptable ways to make use of his mental and physical energy and assisting him to grasp the way to behave correctly by showing him what to do and rewarding him for his efforts.

Sealing Your Home's Leaky AC Ductwork

Simple as it may sound, inspecting and restoring your home's ac duct system may be hot, sweaty and risky. Most likely, you will end up forced to enter in the crawl space. In some events, you will probably have to enter the attic. Furthermore, you might have to use home insulation materials, restricted maneuvering space and darkness.

Before beginning the method, have a flashlight and poke your brain in your home's crawl space. On some houses, this space is indeed tight that even ac repair professionals groan before entering. If you are fearful of snakes, hate spiders or have certain closterfobic responses to tight places, just close the hatch and call your local AC service center.

Still want to do the work yourself? Here goes:

1) Proper Clothing - Pull out or buy a mechanic's jumpsuit. A cheap one costs around $15.00, but better protection emanates from durable equipment. A jumpsuit will give you full body protection against dirt, grime and creepy crawling things. It also has an extended range of pockets for carrying choice tools.

2) Tools - Sealing AC ductwork doesn't take lots of tools. You need:

** Closable box cutter with extra blades.

** Flashlight equipped with a focus adjustable base.

** One-inch wide, extended-reach paint brush.

** A standard dust mask

** Tin snips and tie-down straps, the 1st for trimming back joints as well as the second for re-hanging fallen ductwork.

** Backup flashlight for emergency exit.

** A roll of two-inch wide or three-inch wide, cold weather HVAC Aluminum Foil tape.

** A four foot amount of one-inch PVC pipe with the elbow on a single end - to moving fallen insulation, left out debris and if necessary an aggressive snake.

** HVAC certified sealant that meets the following testing procedures: ASTM E84, NFPA 255 or UL 723. The flame spread rate have to be less than 25. The smoke development rate have to be under 50. These products may be purchased in a caulk-tube format, but you ought to also use a brush to stay the sealing.

3) Sealing Process - Making Your Air Conditioning Ducts Airtight

Side-eyeing the Black Furies

I recently reread the Black Furies revised tribe book because as I’ve gotten older, I’ve liked the Furies less and less.  I thought maybe tribe book would help. It didn’t.

It tried to get away from the main stereotype of “but we’re not like other Girls!” but unfortunately it introduced a different issue and reinforced the ongoing issue of “we’re a matriarchy- it values exactly what patriarchy does, but with girls on top!” But not those other girls. Only the cool girls who are not like other girls.

hrrrgh.

Beyond that, the one consistent thing you’d had in all editions is that the Furies are champions of the Wyld. Nobody understands the Wyld like the Furies, not even the Red Talons.  

But the Revised tribe book you’ve got some very, very Weavery shit going down. One of the issues has been there in every edition, two are brand new problems with Revised. W20 sort of backs off this due to space issues, but you can basically still go with “expanded information in Revised tribe books is still relevant to W20″. (the By Night LARP rules are really, really dif, so I’m not talking bout them here)

I’m gonna slap rest behind a cut, but here’s the three issues here so you know what the hell I’m gonna yell bout behind the cut.

Vengeance/justice

age roles

gender

and at the end of this big rant I’ll address those three issues and the general “matriarchy is patriarchy with the serial numbers filed off” and what WOULD work as a coherent whole for Furies.

Issue one, vengeance/justice.  Revised try to refocus on the Black Furies as the actual FURIES. This is their thing. They are the ones that seek vengeance for transgressions against universal moral laws. Murderers, rapists, oath breakers, etc. 

Which is fine... but rest of book harps on their agents of the Wyld. Vengeance or Justice is anything but random, chaotic, or creating something new.  And you’re enforcing moral laws applicable to humans so they’re not truly universal. They’re quite artificial.  So they’re agents enforcing artificial law. Often by ending the life of something and returning it to the cycle.

That’s either Weaver or Balance Wyrm territory, possibly both.  It’s most definitely NOT of the Wyld.  While meanwhile going “nobody loves and supports the Wyld like us! You are all tools of the Weaver” 

K. pretty standard “do as I say, not as I do” for Garou, but still poorly integrated here.

Issue two, age roles.

I don’t hate this idea, but I hate the implementation here for much the same reason. The book itself doesn’t entirely agree on implementation, so I’m going to comment on the most extreme version.

So the cycle of age roles is Maiden/Mother/Crone.  That sort of triple deity set up works well in the Werewolf cosmology and particularly well with the Black Furies as the Greeks had a whole lot of these and majority were female triads.

The execution of this idea though... hrrrrrrgh.

Its tied explicitly to their reproductive status.  Which ties back into the issue of “its patriarchy with the serial numbers filed off”  Defining them by reproductive status is exactly what they’re bitching about with other tribes.  But we’re not like those other tribes!  We value women... based on their reproductive status!

They get into how much they revere motherhood but then actively either kill male infants (historically) or give them away (modern era).  So you give your male Garou cubs away, to be raised by the patriarchy you hate so they’ll grow up to actively participate in it?  I know Garou are good at creating their own problems, but REALLY.  (I will bitch about this more later)

Anyway, so the most extreme version they present in book is tied entirely to change in reproductive status.  You’re a Maiden until you get pregnant.  Once pregnant you’re a Mother... even if you miscarry or must immediately give away that child at birth.  A mother with nothing to mother. You’re a Crone as soon as you lose the ability to give birth.  Female Metis automatically are Crones. 

So three big issues here. One, ideally the age roles are progressed through voluntarily.  But they CAN be forced through them.  Which rather goes against the whole actual age role thing. They’re lacking all the other markers appropriate to that role. Your Metis starts as a Crone once they go through First Change.  A Homid that was wounded badly during Rite of Passage and is now infertile is also a Crone. These are teenagers possibly even TWEENS. Stupid, rage fueled teenagers. Other than inability to have biological children, they really have nothing in common with that role in other ways.

Two, you’re mechanically presented with a Rite specifically to restore fertility to those that lost it.  So you can mechanically turn back time and go back to a previous age role. What. Again, while that may work when its based entirely upon reproductive status, it doesn’t work with all the rest of the spiritual setup.

Three, it dances around the “well if you choose not to breed, that’s okay too” but its clearly NOT as this is included as part of the reason you can’t have male Black Furies. They can’t bear a child, so can’t really understand.  Which then circles you back to a female Black Fury who doesn’t breed can’t truly be part of the tribe either. They sort of touch on this as why they occasinally give away female metis too.

Related to this is a peculiar omission. There’s a Rite to let an adult female Garou join the Black Furies as a tribe. There is NO Rite to formally adopt children. With that Mother role, you’d think that would in there, especially since you have a pretty high mortality rate among Garou.  There’s going to be quite a lot of orphans and yet, despite that... adoption is never mentioned. Biological offspring, or nothing!

Issue three, gender. Let’s be clear here there’s a difference between biological sex and gender.  Both are treated poorly in tabletop. the new BNS LARP rules sort of address this for balance issues, but not the core issue I have here.

First, you have the age roles and assigning them based entirely on reproductive ability or loss thereof.  This very clearly sets up that biological sex as they key factor here. Trans women are therefor not women and can’t have age roles and can’t be Black Furies. I'm going to give this benefit of the doubt that this is more a function of the age of the book and just overlooking it vs actively excluding trans and intersex individuals as the BNS LARP rules kinda sorta address this, but the tabletop still has the biological sex setup.

Two, almost all the material conflates biological sex with gender as if they’re the same thing.  Gender is constructed, and gender roles are really what the Furies are really pissed off about.

Yet... exclude male Lupus.  Your newly changed male Lupus is more or less a blank slate as to gender roles.  What are those? and is more or less going to conform to whatever is presented as normal to them.  So instead they give away their male lupus to other tribes to join those tribes and be raised with the gender roles that actively hurt them and the Furies as a whole. Why don’t you just hand them to BSDs while you’re at it?  okay, that’s a bit extreme, but you’re effectively empowering the system you’re opposing!  

But we’ll keep male metis because something-something mumble its kind of poorly articulated in canon.  This sort of ties into the whole justice/vengeance up top, but its kind of poorly presented. They do mention they don’t always keep female metis! It really comes down to punishing the mother for sexual transgressions. But we’re not like those other tribes! 

Male Homids, get out of here... but we’ll keep male human Kinfolk. Your Lupus might not get the gender distinction and may be fine with it (wolves tend to disperse from their birth pack, so may seem natural to them).  But your Homid you give up to another tribe. It’s likely that they WILL know they’re adopted.  and with Rage fueled critters, that they were given up because of their sex is likely going to grind at them.  Not every one, but enough that you’ve likely created some really resentful young Garou who may be ACTIVE foes of the Furies. This is definitely in “creating your own problems” territory.

And again, it comes back to reinforcing the whole biologic sex is destiny.  Male Garou that could reproduce are given up because they can’t become pregnant and therefore can’t understand.  They are worthless without a womb.  which is basically part of what they’re bitching about with patriarchy that women are valued only for their ability to bear children... WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THE FURIES ALSO VALUE.

You’re back to its Patriarchy but with girls on top. It’s exactly the same values but with women on top and absolutely no room for deviation from Biology is Destiny.

And this doesn’t even get into issues with trans or intersex individuals. 

alright, enough bitching, what do you DO to overhaul this whole mess.

I think you’re still going to have an endless round of “but we’re not like other Garou!” because pretty well EVERY TRIBE says this. That’s how you get a tribe. But you can have one that’s more internal consistent.

One big change you can make that will tie all the rest of this together is head slappingly simple. Black Furies are not just matriarchal they’re matrilineal. Descent is determined through your mother’s line.

They’re not explicitly so in canon. Think about that for a minute. That’s really something that should be specifically called out and emphasized.  Descent and lineage is determined through your maternal line. Your paternity is irrelevant. 

They sort of dance around it in canon but its not addressed with Kinfolk and that really should be explicitly stated.  It’s a really significant thing that makes total sense for them and also marks them as clearly different than the other Garou tribes. And would be a source of conflict with other tribes who default to patrilineal as part of patriarchal system.

I’m also going to point out the spellcheck in this browser refuses to recognize matrilineal as a word. That’s WHY is needs to be called out explicitly, not hinted at. Most readers are going to miss hints because they were raised in a patriarchal society. The default is that you don’t need to distinguish between types of descent so it doesn’t recognize either matrilineal or patrilineal as words. 

alright, now to the specific three issues I had.

one, vengeance/justice. This is mostly a shift in framing.  You’re NOT an agent of the Wyld here, you are part of the greater cycle.  Yes, this may mean you are at times acting as an agent of the Weaver and/or the Wyrm, but that is how it should be.  The Wyld cannot be protected by the other parts of the cycle being ignored or neglected.  

So you’re bringing justice because otherwise because of the Wyrm’s corruption, the cycle fails to complete correctly. We’re enforcing these particular artificial laws because to do so prevents the cycle stalling out.  

But while you’re doing that, the artificialness of some of those laws need to be acknowledged at same time.  The point is in keeping the cycle turning, not necessarily in enforcing laws just for reasons of enforcing them. You fight the Weaver and the Wyrm when they stall out the cycle though things cannot return to the Wyld, not because of inherent wrongness of the other two portions of the Triat.

Part two, age roles. The tribe book offered some slightly less harsh options for transitions, but you still had them tied explicitly to reproductive status.

Toss that. Age roles are now based more on matching the other attributes of the role.  Frequently reproduction IS the trigger for transition, but not always. And we’re going to tie that to the renown attributes and the three categories. So some auspices tend to stay in certain roles for longer or shorter periods. 

Maiden is the time for Glory, Rage, and the Wyld. It is the time for the self.  One’s own actions are the most important contribution. Rage drives your action as the purity and surety of your conviction is clearly demonstrated in a growing mastery of your own powers and the world around you. It is time to try new things and just as quickly discard them. This is where all Furies start out. Ahroun’s and Galliards tend to spend longer as Maidens than other auspices.

Mother is the time for Honor, Willpower, and the Weaver. It is the time to realize that sometimes other needs take priority over your own. Your actions still matter, but often your role is to do for others what they can’t do themselves or can’t do YET. Many times your role is getting them to the point where they CAN do for themselves, while not losing your temper. This is the time to start planning for long term. To find something and stick with it with dedication. Furies transition to this role when they’ve spent a full lunar year as a caretaker for something or someone. This is most often a biological child, but having a child doesn’t automatically mean they’re actually ready for this role.  The trigger can also be caring for an adopted child, tutoring a convert from another tribe, taking on an important caern position, or fulfilling a specific quest.  Whatever it is that they invest their time and dedication to bringing to fruition. Philodox tend to move quickly to this role and stay there longer.

Crone is the is the time for Wisdom, Gnosis, and the Balance Wyrm. It is the time for seeing the coming end and being ready to move on while also making sure the cycle continues. The Crone is less concerned with individual actions and more with the cycle as a whole. She often can hurt other’s feelings with her bluntness (she ain’t got time for this shit) but also can be the most understanding because she realizes the value of a kind word now in averting future trouble. Menopause is a frequent trigger for this, but anything that truly forces the Garou to confront the fact that they likely won’t see next generation grow up could be a trigger.  A crippling battlescar, the death of a packmate,the death of their child, the loss of a caern, etc. Something triggers that their life will never be the same as it was before whatever triggered the introspection.

point three, gender.  Let’s go with the Furies should NOT be giant dickheads that insist sex and gender are exactly the same and very firmly divided. That they are genuinely mad about artificial human GENDER roles and not about some kind of biological essentialism.

Which then leads you back to the big issue with NOT having male Furies if their anger is directed at patriarchy, not some inevitable biological destiny. But lets jump back to that one big change mentioned at the beginning: make the Furies matrilineal.

In this case, the important thing is descent from a Black Fury on your mother’s side.  That includes through Kinfolk. So male Black Furies, unless they mated with Fury Kinfolk, their kids aren’t considered Furies.  They belong to tribe of their mother. This does set them up for conflict with other tribes with some disputed cubs, but that will still fit in with original background of giving away cubs.  The cub belongs to the mother’s tribe, even if she’s Kinfolk because we’re matrilineal and we think it works that way. Female cubs (or Kinfolk) where father is not a Fury are just more likely to claimed by the tribe.  Males might be adopted back, but its less likely (afterall,patriarchy does benefit them!) so are almost all go to the father’s tribe. This gives the impression to other tribes that they give up male cubs.

This also gives you a much firmer reason to keep metis born to Furies.  Their father has no claim on them. Of course they’re Furies.  Same with Lupus. and same with Homid. matrilineal descent is really easy to track in almost all cases so its really hard to have lost cubs.

5 Ways Nintendo Could Fix Breath Of The Wild's Clunky Interface

Nintendo’s latest Zelda game ​Breath of the Wild has garnered deserved praise for presenting users with an immense, emergent open world full of discovery, surprise, and charm. However, as I’ve been digging deeper into the game, I started to notice some areas that could benefit from a few quick user experience (UX) design improvements to reduce some bad friction and busywork.

The following article was republished with permission from Amped-UX.com. I wanted to share these thoughts today as I believe these changes would result in a more fluid and intuitive user experience.

1. Streamline equipment management.

Breath of the Wild offers a much wider variety of equipment than Zelda games in the past, but the weapons and bows can break after extended usage. While there has been some online controversy about the wisdom of this decision, I’m not questioning it. In fact, I think it works because in the context of a much larger world to explore, players need a continuous feed of new and interesting weapons and choices to try, as this provides tactical variety and supports longer-term mechanical engagement.

The problem starts when the player walks over a dropped weapon and a UI button cluster prompt appears on-screen to pick it up. If you have space in your limited weapon inventory, no problem. However, if you don’t have any space, it tells you you’re out of room, and nothing more. This is an error, and good ux designs don’t permit users to make errors, they handle them. This happens often because users tend to horde weapons.

To get around this, users have to press Start, navigate into the weapons tab, search for a weapon they don’t want, select it, then navigate to the “Drop” item in a sub-menu. This problem with full weapon management is made worse when a new weapon is inside a treasure chest, since the chest closes when the user doesn’t have enough space to pick up the weapon inside. This requires the user to re-open the chest after going through the previous routine of clearing out weapon inventory space.

One of the ways I work around this clunky method is to press the Right Bumper to throw the undesired weapon away (which can be used as an attack move, such as to throw spears). This works for melee weapons, but bow and arrow weapons can’t be thrown away, nor can shields. In this case, if you have full bows or shields, you have to browse through the equipment menu again to drop something.

Because you are dropping and switching equipment in the UI with greater frequency, users will likely encounter unnecessary friction. The best fix to avoid this clunky experience would simply be to add a context-sensitive “Swap” option that only appears when the user tries to pick up a weapon or open a chest when the weapon inventory is full. This would no longer force users to go through this frequent and tedious routine, making weapon inventory management more fluid and keeping users focused on the adventure and exploration, not futzing with menus.

2. Give users shortcuts to food.

One of the more consistent hallmarks of UI design in the Zelda franchise, even since the 16-bit era, has been the ability to remap the button functions to use different items. With Breath of the Wild​ we now have a system of magic rune powers that gives users agency over the game’s physics systems, and an ingredient and cooking system that allows users to create different food items and elixirs to restore health and/or grant status benefits, like increased damage or resistances.

While you can select from the magic runes by pressing and holding D-pad Up (more on this in a bit), there is no quick access to food items. Users have to press the Start button, browse to the Food tab, sort through several sub-pages, then sift through an item matrix to read and evaluate which dish or elixir confers the desired status effect and/or restores the right amount of health (too much health would waste the food’s benefit, too little and the user has to eat multiple items).

This UI song-and-dance routine wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t happen all the time, but combat tends to be less forgiving and more lethal in this new Zelda than previous entries in the franchise. Even within the first several dozen hours of play it’s quite common for enemies to nearly kill you in one hit, requiring frequent pauses during combat to sift through menus and evaluate healing/buff items.

This puts quite a crimp on the pacing and fluidity of combat, so one possible solution would be to clear up one of the D-pad directions for a list of user-configured Food shortcuts to better support personalized, predetermine playstyles and introduce more of an element of planning versus clunky reactiveness.

Here are two potential solutions, both of which would involve a number of cascading changes to the UI to make it work.

Relocate the Horse Whistle – Pressing D-pad Down makes the player character (Link) whistle to summon his current horse. While it’s a semi-frequently used function, an acceptable tradeoff to place this one or two steps away.

It could be grouped within the Rune Magic functions, or contextualized as a special item like a whistle or ocarina and placed within the Start Menu. Many times the horse can’t reach the user anyway (due to distance or obstacles), so this is another instance of UX design permitting bad friction by allowing uncertain or undesired outcomes.

Relocate the Arrow and Shield Switching functions – Pressing D-pad Left brings up an auxiliary menu that permits users to select shields or arrow types, depending on the primary weapon type the user has currently selected. In my experience with the game so far, the frequency that I need to switch my shield or arrows is either moderate or infrequent , so these functions could be relocated.

Expanding the primary weapon selection (on D-pad Right) from a linear row of weapon selections to a matrix of 2 rows would achieve this. In the case of the melee weapon selection, the top row would be weapons, while the bottom row would be shields (which would be greyed out if the player selects a two-handed weapon). If the user draws their bow, then the top row becomes bows, while the bottom becomes the arrow types.

Regardless of the solution used, users would also need an additional submenu item added when selecting food items to “Add to Shortcuts” or “Remove from Shortcuts.”

There may need to be some additional constraints around the number of food shortcuts users can add, but I don’t see a reason why the food shortcut UI couldn’t be an unlimited 2d matrix instead of a linear list, or it could be contextualized as a limited but upgradeable quantity, much like the weapon capacity upgrades users find later in the game.

3. Make rune magic selection more fluid.

Another solution to free up one of the D-pad buttons for Food Shortcuts would be to revamp or streamline the Rune Magic selection interface.

Selecting a specific Rune is a little clunky – users have to press D-pad Up to bring up the Rune selection UI, then use the Right Analog stick to browse through the linear list, release D-pad Up, then hold the Left Bumper to activate the Rune power, which usually requires another few steps, such as aiming with the Right Stick, then throwing or dropping one of two bomb runes or activating the power with the “A” Button.

What makes the Rune selection process slightly clunky is that if you hold the Left Bumper to enter the Rune mode, and you have the wrong power selected, you have to back out and go through the Selection process again.

A more fluid solution would be to change the function of the D-pad during Rune Magic mode so that it overrides the weapon selectors. Users can’t use weapons, shields, or arrows, during Rune Magic mode anyway, because the mode tends to be used more for solving physics puzzles (though not always).

Because there is less of a pressing need to configure weapons in Rune Magic mode, changing powers on the D-pad would enable users to swap between the different Rune magics more fluidly without the need to fiddle with backing in and out of the current Rune Magic UI to find the power you want.

4. Warn users that food status buffs don’t stack.

Instead, the effect of one food item overrides the other. While I would’ve preferred to err on the side of greater user agency and allow stats to stack, especially in a game that emphasizes player freedom and agency over saying “no” to the player, I can understand that it might make combat too easy.

​What I would prefer to see would be some warning or confirmation prompt that you’re about to replace and lose your previous buff. This would be especially helpful if you just consumed a rare, high value, or powerful food item and were about to wipe it out with a weaker one, preventing user error.

5. Give users better item sorts.

When you sort items, like ingredients for cooking or crafting, there is one sort type and it doesn’t really tell you much about the method it chooses to sort by. It seems to be by a general type (such as fruit, plants, meats, critter, mineral, for ingredients, and then by effect type for food). But in some instances, this enigmatic sort is not helpful.

What if you’re talking to a merchant and you want to sort the items by worth to find out what’s the most valuable item? Nope! You have to sift through items one by one to see how much you can sell them for. How about sorting them by what you have the most of? Ditto, no can do.

This fix is pretty simple—just enable the sort button “Y” to cycle through a few additional sort types and adding a few text labels (“Sort by Value”, “Sort by Amount”, etc.) to improve usability and alleviate inventory busywork.

That’s bad… After presenting a consistently godless universe in ten theatrical features, two TV movies, six TV series, and lord knows how many books / comics / games, the concept of God has been dropped into Star Wars (hell as a concept was introduced back in Empire Strikes Back).  I’m absolutely not saying that God has no place in popular entertainment, just that the universe of Star Wars -- both in concept and execution -- consistently portrayed a culture where the very idea of God had never been introduced (but this may be attributable to bad scripting; see below…).

That’s good… Snoke’s throne room is like something out of a 1950s MGM musical, and I mean that in a good sense:  It looks genuinely futuristic and other worldly.  There are some small edits and cutaway shots in the film that look like nothing else in the Star Wars universe (and not big special effects scenes but rather subtle little moments).  Now and then there are specific call outs to earlier films, in particular Luke Skywalker dying (Fnck you!  I told you there would be spoilers!) under twin suns echoing the moment in the original Star Wars when he stared off into the twin sunset of Tatooine and realized destiny was calling him elsewhere.  And the salt-encrusted mineral world of Crait is the closest thing to a genuinely alien world that we’ve ever seen in Star Wars.

That’s bad… As my son-in-law Bobby Dragulescu observed, the Star Wars universe is only visually consistent:  In no shape / fashion / form does it portray a uniform worldview (or rather, galactic-view) of a society that could actually function.  The political systems are a hot mess, and for all the endless talk about trade alliances in the prequels, there’s virtually no signs of actual large scale interstellar trade or commerce (with the possible exception of the bio-factory on Kamino cranking out endless copies of Temuera Morrison in Attack Of The Clones).  Mind you, virtually all space operas suffer from this flaw (Star Trek The Original Series hid it better than most by taking place so waaay far out there that commerce had not yet completely caught up with the Enterprise).  Star Wars looks pretty but makes no damn sense, and this problem only gets worse with each additional installment, building towers of cards on foundations of sand.

That’s good… Poe’s brief exchange with General Hux was Monty Python / Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy level hilarity, shockingly unexpected in a funny (not offensive) manner, and an absolute delight harkening back to the cheekiest lines in the original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.

That’s bad… The rest of the film has the worst dialog heard in a Star Wars movie written by anybody other than George Lucas.

That’s good… More (human) diversity in the roles, with females and non-whites / non-Europeans filling in a lot of supporting roles.

That’s bad… I almost typed “There isn’t a single good performance in this film” but realized that isn’t true; there are several good performances but the bad ones are so bad they suck all memory of the good into a black hole of mediocrity.  Daisy Ridley as Rey does a good job, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux and Benicio del Toro as DJ both chew scenery with great gusto, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico struggles mightily to make a silk purse out of her sow’s ear and ends up with a nice imitation leather wallet, Andy Serkis draws ahead of Doug Jones as the best-actor-you-never-actually-see-onscreen race, but much to my delight Adam Driver as Kylo Ren goes so far over the emo top that I am capable of forgiving the film of all its grievous flaws.  That being said, The Last Jedi does Carrie Fisher no favors in her final portrayal of Leia Organa (flying through space like a Marvel superhero doesn’t help, either), Laura Dern is woefully miscast and seems to think she’s just doing a table read, and although serviceable as Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamil proves himself to be the least compelling performer to play a Jedi or Sith.  (He does shine as the voice of Dobbu Scay, a trollish alien who insists on shoving coins up BB-8’s nether regions.)

That’s bad… When it’s good (see themes up above) the script is very good, but when it’s bad (50%+ of the remaining film) it sucks wet farts out of dead porgs.  Finn, Rose, and DJ have an incredibly convoluted / overly complicated hour long sub-plot that contributes absolutely nothing to the story’s final resolution.  They visit a gambling casino world that looks like a crappy swipe from a James Bond movie (tho the Gerry Anderson Supermarionation-looking alien was a nice touch), feature an alien critter race that’s a lift from Syd Mead, and chat incessantly via com-links while traveling through hyperspace despite the fact that tracking ships through hyperspace is repeatedly presented as a radical leap in technology!  And while it’s revealed the First Order has planted a homing device on Leia’s ship (something Darth Vader did in the original Star Wars with the Millennium Falcon) and has an agent on board, nothing is ever done with these ideas.

That’s good… Oh!  Snoke tells Kylo Ren to “get rid of that silly mask”.  That’s nice.

That’s bad… The Last Jedi drops the ball on several plot points in addition to the hyperspace tracking mentioned above.  Luke promises to teach Rey three lessons about the force, but only gets through two and the third one is never alluded to again.  They make a big deal about Rey’s parents being despicable drug addicts who sold her as an infant, completely lacking in Force pedigree which means (a) they are belaboring a non-crucial story point or (b) -- and we’ll give ‘em a benefit of a doubt here -- they’re planting a red herring in order to set up a big reveal for the next movie.  Snoke is demonstrated to be omniscient and capable of planning so far ahead and in so much detail that he can create a fake future in Kylo Ren’s mind for Rey to read, but conveniently leaves a live / fully charged light saber on the arm of his throne to get sliced in half by (and if he’s such a hot snot re Force abilities, why would getting whacked in half ala Darth Maul even slow him down?). 

That’s good… ...I got nuthin’…

That’s bad… Using a starship as a kamikaze by revving up to hyperjump speed and ramming it into the baddies’ ship is a cool idea but makes one wonder why didn’t anybody use it before in the Star Wars universe (c’mon, space torpedoes) and why did they wait to the very last minute to do so -- losing most of the supporting cast in the process -- instead of turning one of the other, smaller ships against Snoke’s flagship?  And nobody in the Star Wars universe has figured out that putting a sharp hairpin turn and/or baffles in an exhaust vent will keep people from dropping bombs / flying spaceships through it.

That’s good… Hey, no Death Star.  Finally.
