BBC WALESĀ āItās My Shoutā Application
Just thought Iād add my application to here since I mentioned Iāll be applying for the scheme. This is my idea for the short film documentary.
ABOUT ME
Iām an Estonian and was fortunate enough to have artistically expressive parents, my upbringing was filled with film, art and music. I was encouraged to think outside the box from an early age.
I developed a passion for the art of cinematography, which led me to come and live in Cardiff three years ago where Iāve been studying Visual Effects and Motion Graphics at the University of South Wales. Even though Iāve only spent a short amount of time here, itās allowed me develop a unique view on Wales.
Whilst studying I have been shot, directed and edited lots of projects, which have included music videos and documentaries. You can watch them here:
http://www.marimakarov.com/videos-1
Iāve also developed a deep fascination with photography and have created many personal projects which can be viewed here:
http://www.marimakarov.com/
My strengths lie in strong visual storytelling.
I didnāt grow up here yet I am lucky enough to really fall in love with the culture and the people in it, which is why I am drawn to documentary filmmaking, I want to showcase talented people in Wales. Iām fascinated by people who raise awareness about important global issues and I want to tell their stories, in order to stimulate national and international debate.
The āItās My Shoutā scheme offers me the opportunity to share my vision with like-minded people with the aim to create Welsh content that crosses borders and reaches wider audience internationally. I believe this initiative is the next major step to develop into the filmmaker I want to become.

PITCH:
Si Martin, was bullied at comprehensive school. The severity of bullying escalated and Si developed extreme depression. He was in a really desperate place and didnāt know where to turn to, he started to self-harm.
Self-harm affects 1 in 12 young people, yet it still remains a stigma-based issue that could be prevented by discussion in an understanding environment. In the last 10 years, hospital admissions as a result of self-harm in the UK have risen by 68%, and this figure is predicted to keep rising.
Si was able to overcome his mental illness through music, he let out his anger and frustration on a drum kit rather than himself. He now plays in several bands and often tours the world doing the thing he loves.
The term ādepressionā comes from the Latin deprimere, which translates as āto press downā and is thus itself metaphorical in its origin. I will recount Siās dark moments through visual metaphors. The fathoms of hell would be visually represented as Si is submerging in dark water, which represents all the pain he is pressing down. The calm before the storm is represented through Si floating in the sea surrounded nothing by just open water. This refers to how lonely he feels in the sea of his own self-destructing thoughts. Si is slowly submerging underwater as a cry for help in the sea of silence. The visual metaphors continue as the shots of the sea change into a storm, associating it with the forever changing moods and thoughts running through Siās mind.
As the intensity builds the film will intercut with Si performing live on stage and back to the visual metaphor. It will show Si being underwater swimming towards the surface and culminate in Siās head rising above the waves and getting a glimpse of him feeling a sense of relief.
Now Si, 25, has founded a non-profit organisation called Heads Above The Waves that raises awareness of depression and self-harm in young people through creativity. Si is sharing his experience with his peers so they know that theyāre not alone.
The film will show Si delivering creative events, workshops and training sessions, that give young people a chance to try out positive and innovative coping techniques for themselves, by exploring the issues theyāre facing through discussion. The film will show how HATW are making a difference by connecting with people through their mutual love for the freedom to create.
The thought-provoking and inspiring autobiographical journey follows Siās struggles of self-harm and joys of overcoming his mental health while helping thousands of others with getting through their own struggles. Si will be shown helping to bring people together through workshops, events and training sessions.
The aim is to show how many of us find support and sense of belonging through creativity. How there are so many positive ways to express ourselves, and to let anyone know who is struggling with mental health ā that they are not alone.Ā
