A/N: MAN this chapter got away from me. enjoy some fluff!

Summary: The weekend at Nekoma comes to an end. You settle in for the ride home.

The vibes are off and you're too tired to do anything but marinate in them.

Another shuffle of bus seats—three girls, two seats at most, but because it's at least daylight and you're alright with it, the others, including Takeda-sensei, have reluctantly allowed a single instance of co-ed seating on the bus, trusting that you'll hit Noya if he tries anything. (You'd gotten onto the bus after him, but you're pretty sure he threatened to fist-fight anyone who sat with him and took your spot. Taking the aisle seat didn't save you: he simply climbed over you to take the window seat.)

Surprisingly, he's not taken the opportunity to talk your ear off. He's kind of got the same vibes everyone else has had ever since this morning, the ones you can't place.

Tense, maybe? Moldy?

You try your best to sigh only internally, not fully willing to be forced to hash it out in an enclosed space regardless of who's decided to pounce on your mood. Instead, you stare at the same damn page of your book that you never got through on the way down here and don't process a single word.

Hinata… got too excited, you guess. Crashed right into Azumane because he wasn't paying enough attention to who the set was for. No one hurt, but then he started in about changing things (not a bad idea, in your totally-expert opinion as someone who has recently gained an entire half of an idea about how volleyball works but who also just spent the past day or so watching them lose), got totally shut down by Kageyama, and outright stated that what they're doing as a team isn't actually working. And ever since, this is what it's been: something pulled taut between the team, everyone on edge.

Something's gonna burst soon.

It's probably a good thing, you think? One of those throw-up-and-then-you'll-feel-better deals. They'll have, like, one big event that fixes everything, and it'll all go back to normal, and it'll be fine and the thing that gets you out of the house will stay fun.

Yeah. It'll be fine.

Mei had always been the weirdest Nishinoya sibling. Kaede was responsible (don't make trouble for Mom this month; she gets really sad around the time her ex-husband left); Satsuki was the troublemaker (I wouldn't have punched him if he weren't such a bitch). Yuu was the only boy, the baby, and only a bit less bad than Satsuki. But Mei?

Mei was quiet. She was a Nishinoya and she was quiet. Despite looking alike, the contrast between her and every single other Nishinoya sibling resulted in strangers assuming they were friends at best and that Mei was being harassed by strangers at worst. Jii-chan got to her too late, probably: all the shyness and all-consuming anxiety that Yuu learned to throw out, to set aside, to hold in for times when no one could see, remained her defining trait.

She didn't have any particular strong hobbies that she was willing to talk about. She cried seemingly at random. She spent long stretches of time doing what looked like nothing at all. She was smart and good at school, but where Yuu got to the test and found it almost impossible to focus long enough to finish in time, she'd sit down for an exam and be escorted out half an hour later, hyperventilating after talking herself into a panic attack. Where he'd learned to simply not give a fuck about academics because he was never gonna be good at them anyway, she was already good and stressed herself to tears.

It'd been Yuu who checked the college entrance exam results for her, Satsuki who screamed about her acceptance loud enough to wake the neighbors, and Kaede who baked a cake to celebrate. But before that, they had to bring home Soba.

Satsuki would kill him for saying it, but Mei was also his favorite sister. He had her to thank for teaching him to spot the onset of an anxiety or panic attack, and her to thank for being able to tell the difference between the two. It was Mei he learned simple, effective strategies for calming oneself for, and Mei who jumped to his defense when he brought home yet another shitty test score. It was hard to control his energy around Satsuki, just a year older than him and the most likely sibling to start or join a fight, and Kaede was kind and responsible but just didn't get it. Mei was the one he could sit silently with, decompress, just exist without feeling the need to be bigger than himself. He found that hard to do with anyone else, at any other time.

(It helped that Mei was the only sister who did not tease him for his height, being shorter than every single other Nishinoya sibling and the only boy.)

The day he found Mei crouching near an empty building in the pouring rain, he listened to her whispered instructions, and they stuck.

Don't push too hard. Crouch down, make yourself small so she doesn't think you're a threat. Let her smell you, but don't reach too fast or move too quickly. Don't shout or you'll scare her. If she hisses or shies away, back off. Be patient, and don't give up.

Admittedly, he's been trying to use the same methods that brought Soba home that first night to get close to you, and admittedly, he hasn't done a very good job with most of them, but you don't seem to have noticed when he breaks a cardinal rule by tackling you or shouting because he's excited to see you, and anyways you're not a stray cat and the two of you are more in the "befriending a nervous cat" stage, but the general strategy stands.

Mei's instructions after the two of them had gotten Soba home had been similar to the ones that got Soba out from under the porch she'd been hiding under, and following those instructions religiously were why Soba loved him and Mei and hated everyone else alive, save for you.

If she needs to hide, let her hide as long as it won't hurt her. It's not like we're trying to give her life-saving medicine, and we'll leave out the things she needs so she can access them on her own time.

Picture you, texting him multiple times in the middle of the night, asking for nothing but a picture of Soba with the sort of texting tone that indicated something was wrong. Picture you, refusing to explain what was wrong. Picture him, letting it go even when he can't shake the sense that you didn't just randomly decide you wanted to see his cat at four in the morning.

Try not to upset her routine. She's a nervous kitty, so doing things around the same time each day will help her get used to us.

This is how he justifies yelling your name and complimenting you every single morning. You're not quite as skittish as Yachi is, but he sees the way you walk yourself into conclusions in your head and he saw the way you spiraled directly into an anxiety attack that time you helped him Ryu and him study. And anyway, you smile when he tells you you look nice that day, so he's not stopping that anytime soon.

Let her come to you. Don't chase her down.

He's not sure near-daily marriage proposals qualifies for not chasing, so to speak, but he's really, really trying not to push any harder than you seem to be okay with.

This last one—other rules for acclimating the nervous new cat that he's decided also apply to courting the prettiest girl he's ever seen—is why, after the fortieth time since he slid into the bus seat beside you, he still doesn't ask why, exactly, you've been on the same page of your book for the past—he checks his phone—forty-three minutes, give or take.

There's no point to giving space to worry ninety percent of the time. If he can't change the outcome, there's no sense in worrying. It's not that he doesn't feel the worry—he just… sets it aside. It's easy to forget it's there if you switch focus to something else, and he's the champion of not focusing on anything at a given time. Shouyo gets too caught up in the game, he creates a new worry by smashing into Asahi's side, but no one was hurt, so forget about it—there's a set to play, a ball to bump, a point to keep in play until it lands on the other side of the net.

But here he is: four and a half hours on a bus, and his most frequent worry these days has been silent a different way from the usual. Yuu would like to think he knows the difference between your pleasant-quiet and your something's-wrong-quiet, and he would also like to think that this difference is fairly obvious considering how much of the past forty-three minutes of silence was you openly glaring at your book without reading it.

Part of let her come to you and don't chase means following cues and paying attention to how you react. You don't like when people worry over you. In fact, you do everything you can to make sure they don't have a reason to. It has the opposite effect, as far as he's concerned, but you take it to a new extreme. He even swears you try to hold in yawns until no one's watching you so no one thinks you're tired, even when the bags under your eyes are clearly running deep. And you're good at putting on a mask—he's seen you switch, the exact moments you decide to smile and talk sweet or otherwise mask some emotion you've decided doesn't have a place in the situation.

That being said, this latest glance worry-ways has him catching you before you sway into the aisle, a firm hand quickly grabbing your shoulder and guiding you back to safety.

Your eyes drift open as he tries not to laugh. "Mmgh?"

"You almost fell," he whispers. "Go back to sleep, we've got a while to go."

"Mmkay."

He shuts his eyes tight, presses a hand firm over his mouth to stop himself. Much like the first time Soba fell asleep on him, there's a life-changing pride that swells in his chest, spiking to what he's pretty sure counts as a cardiac event when you sway again, this time leaning over to rest your head against his shoulder.

"Uh—[name]-san—"

You turn your face into his shoulder wordlessly. You've already fallen back asleep.

Face burning, he shuffles to get comfortable, marks your page in your book, and sets it closed on your lap. Then, as an afterthought, he pulls up his phone's camera and starts a video recording.

"Before you fall back asleep, [name]-san," he whispers.

You wrinkle your nose, let out a tiny whine of acknowledgment.

"Marry me?"

You let out a breathy mumble that he's pretty sure is an attempt at the words stay still.

He won't argue with that.

You wake up with a sore neck.

You'd imagine it has something to do with the weight currently resting on your head, but you can't be sure and you're too tired to bother opening your eyes or moving. Instead, you listen to the ambient noise of the bus, which right now appears to be consumed with whispers more than anything.

"E-eh?" Yachi is saying to someone. "I-I can't just—that would be so rude—"

"Come on. You can always delete it if she asks when she's up."

"I-I'm sorry, Tanaka-san—"

"No worries. Here, let me just—"

You have a weird feeling about this. You shift, turn your face into whatever it is you've decided to use as a pillow for this bus ride.

This is about when you remember who you were sitting beside for the ride back.

"Got it! I'm just gonna—"

"Tanaka-senpai, if I open my eyes and I see you recording us in any form, I'm breaking your phone," you grumble, not bothering to unwind your arms from what you're pretty sure is Noya's midsection. You're also pretty sure that soreness in your neck has something to do with his head resting on yours, and you're absolutely certain that that's his arm around your waist. Put simply, any untangling right now is gonna wake him up if you're not careful.

All fine. You vaguely remember him catching you from falling into the aisle earlier. Given that he would appear to be asleep right now, you can't really blame him from shifting into a more comfortable position in his sleep, especially seeing as you can't see him moving your arms to wrap around his body in your sleep. That, and you know how often you wake up cuddling your pillow. For once, you're not going to kill him for something.

That being said, you're also pretty sure Tanaka can tell that you're not fucking around.

"Do me a favor and don't open your eyes yet, then," he replies simply. After a moment's shuffle: "Alright, now you don't have to break my phone."

Your phone—or maybe Noya's?—buzzes between you.

You'll bet actual money that he just sent whatever photo he took to one—or both—of you.

You open your eyes with a sigh, raising an eyebrow when you catch Yachi's sparkly look from over the seat back.

"Um." She takes a moment to collect herself. "Sensei says we'll be stopping at a rest stop soon, so everyone should be ready to get up and stretch their legs."

"'Kay."

Tanaka leers from across the aisle. "You can have the honors of waking your cuddle buddy up, [name]-san. Since you two are so close all of a sudden."

"I'm going to hit you."

"Lucky me, you'll need to wake him up to do that, and I'm pretty sure Noya-san will hold you back if you try."

You grumble. "Just watch me."

Finally, finally, you move to untangle yourself from Noya. Pat a hand on his chest in hopes of getting him to wake up. "Senpai. C'mon."

He shuffles a little. You shake him harder.

"Senpai."

He sighs sleepily, brings up his other arm to pull you against his chest in a crushing hold.

Tanaka stifles a laugh behind you. "By the way, he's got a bit of a death grip when he's still asleep. Good luck!"

"Don't you good luck me, help!" you hiss, wriggling in his hold.

"Promise not to hurt me for anything that's happened on this bus today?"

"Tanaka-senpai! After all I did for you—"

A hand reaches over the back of your seat, baps Noya on the head hard enough that it moves your head.

"Oi," Ennoshita says. "Get up. You're crushing [surname]-san."

A sleepy mumble. You feel the weight on top of your head shift, and you peek up at Noya, red-faced as you watch him process where he is.

Your one consolation is that he appears to become equally red-faced the moment he looks down at you. "Good morning, Senpai. P-please let me go so I can kill your best friend."

Impossibly, his hold on you tightens, sleep clearing from his eyes with frankly impressive speed. "What'd he do?"

"Irrelevant. I said please?"

He hums softly. "I'm not sure… we do need him for matches…"

Fuck. You need to get out of this before you combust. Not even just because this weird twist in your torso is starting to make more than just your neck hurt—every word from his mouth is rumbling through his chest, still sleep-tinged, and straight into you. "C'mon, Ennoshita-senpai can take his place, it won't kill you guys."

He studies you carefully, having apparently immediately grown used to the position where you've become a teddy bear. "Give me a strong yes and I'll think about it."

Alright, bet. Time to break out the big guns.

Looking at him with your best, sweetest puppy-dog eyes, you shift your voice into something just a touch cutesier than your usual. You'd normally never be caught dead with that tone, but desperate times call for desperate measures, right? "Senpai."

He blinks, expression going carefully blank.

"Please?"

He lets you go like he's been burned, and you immediately respond by launching yourself at Tanaka. Regrettably, Sawamura had sat across the aisle from the both of you as a pseudo-chaperone. He doesn't even look up when he sticks an arm out between you to block your path.

"The cleaning fees if you murder someone on the bus are ridiculous. All that hard work you and Yachi-san put in for donations would barely make a dent in it."

You frown, deflating a little. "I barely put in any work. Don't credit me for that."

He glances up at you curiously, but doesn't lower his arm until the bus pulls into the rest stop. "Tanaka, don't antagonize [surname]-san."

"Why am I getting yelled at? She's the one threatening me!"

Sawamura doesn't respond. You stick your tongue out and quiet down—Takeda-sensei's gotten up to address the bus.

"Alright, everyone, we're going to take some time to stretch and eat before getting back on the road. Feel free to get out, get some food, and everything, just please remember to be back at the bus in forty-five minutes."

Ukai nods along. "Don't make us hunt you down."

A round of affirmations stirs up in reply as your heart sinks.

You didn't bring any money.

No problem; you'll get off, bathroom break just so you can say you got off the bus, and then just get back on the bus and wait to leave. Maybe actually make progress on that fucking book you haven't been reading even though you've had at least six non-consecutive hours to read. It's getting ridiculous at this point.

You hop off the last step of the bus, scan the area until you find the large red and blue signs indicating the bathrooms. Before you can take more than two steps towards them, someone taps your shoulder.

There's Noya, grinning like always. "Where are you off to?"

"Bathroom. I'm pretty sure you can't legally follow, Senpai."

"Wanna grab lunch?"

"I'm not that hungry, but thanks."

He doesn't miss a beat. "I'll treat you."

"We've been over this, you don't have to—"

"Consider it payment for the exams I wouldn't have passed without you."

"You already got me chips and stuff."

"And now I'm getting you lunch. Come on." He guides you very deliberately towards the food court. "If you actually need to use the bathroom I'll let you escape, but if you hide there until we leave I'm picking food for you and buying it anyway."

"You're insane."

"You're stuck with me," he retorts, and, well, you don't have anything to say to that.

You get the Shunsai Curry and Noya gets a slice of pizza. He'd raised an eyebrow at you picking the cheapest thing on the menu, but let it slide when you pointed out it was a meal and you could have just refused to eat anything but gelato.¹⁸

He'd then insisted that afterwards, you get gelato. You'd insisted that he not buy you gelato. You've compromised, and now you're sitting across from him with a cup of gelato.

12:42. Be back at the bus in thirteen minutes. Give five minutes to walk, or three if you're willing to run, which Noya might be but you're not. Finish the gelato by 12:50. Easy enough, if you could make yourself take a bite.

"You alright?"

900 yen for the curry. 350 yen for the gelato. He's spent 1,250 yen on you in the past thirty-two minutes.¹⁹

Another glance at your phone. 12:43. You're going to be late getting back if you don't eat the stupid gelato, and you can't waste it. Not when he spent 350 yen on it.

This is so fucking stupid.

"[name]-san?"

A hand waves in your field of vision. You blink, snapping back into reality. Noya finished his gelato sometime between the walk from the stand to the table, while you haven't even tasted yours.

"Sorry," you mumble. You don't elaborate.

"I asked if you were alright. You're glaring at the gelato even harder than you were glaring at your book earlier."

"Oh. Sorry."

"One more apology, and I'm buying you a souvenir—"

"Stop," you snap, the anger startling even you. "Stop wasting money on me, Noya-senpai. You don't have to—I'm not a charity case, you know?"

He flinches a little, settles back in his chair. "Is that what you think I'm doing?"

"Aren't you? I'm not—I'm not destitute or anything, I just—I mean—Otoo-san has money, I could have just asked for money to spend on the way back, it's not—"

"I didn't think you were," he says slowly. "Poor, or anything like that. I mean, I've seen your house."

"Exactly!" you bite out as the first tears slip down your cheeks. "You've seen my house. You're probably just—I mean, everyone in the neighborhood probably knows that—"

He slips back into that gentle tone from before, the cat-coaxing tone like you're some scared animal. "Hey. Why are you crying? I'm sorry."

You drop your head, stab the gelato almost too hard with your spoon. "Do you seriously not know?"

"You're really going to have to elaborate for me to have any idea what you're talking about."

"…let's do this. Why do you go out of your way to be nice to me and buy me stuff?"

"You're the prettiest girl I've ever seen and I like being around you," he says, beginning to count on his fingers. "I'd say we've become friends, seeing as you actually started calling me Noya-senpai when I asked you to and we talk a lot, and I like doing things for my friends. Especially when they're pretty girls."

"…do you have a lot of pretty girls as friends?"

"Just the one!" He doesn't miss a beat. "Not only that, but a good senpai takes care of his underclassmen. It's my job to buy you and Shouyo ice cream and nikuman! Hm, what else… oh! Because I wanna spoil you! I said this before, but you've got a really nice smile, and even though you always try to stop me from spending money on you, you usually smile and you always thank me, which feels really nice."

Unbelievable. Actually unbelievable. Everyone in the fucking neighborhood knew about it. You spent weeks getting cards and flowers and fruit plates from well-meaning strangers. You stopped going to the closest grocery store because the owner kept giving you a pitying look and mysteriously forgetting to charge you for a few things. The only butcher shop you're willing to attend is because the owner has never even once commented on it, even though you're certain she knows. And Noya has no idea. "Is that seriously it?"

"Oh! Also because I don't think anyone should have to skip lunch just because they don't happen to have any money on them. I've got the extra to feed you, and Okaa-san and Jii-chan are both huge on the whole 'if someone goes hungry, you're failing them' deal. So right now I'm also feeding you because it's the right thing to do."

You study him carefully. You're not sure Noya can lie—he's refreshingly, frustratingly open at all times. He doesn't ever hold back. Even for stupid things like transparently trying to get you to let him try your cooking, he just admits to it when you confront him.

"…how good are you at keeping secrets?"

"Satsuki, my sister, has gotten into something like twenty fights in her lifetime and our mom has never heard of a single one of them. Does that mean anything?"

Fuck it. You've already broken down in public. "Do you want to come over for dinner tonight?"

He blinks slowly. "Yes. Absolutely. Why?"

"I… I'll tell you about it, but we really don't have the time right now, and I don't want to talk about it in front of everyone else in the club, so…"

"Dinner, then." He grins. Pats your head.  "Eat your gelato quick and try to get the sniffles out so we can run back to the bus without anyone asking any questions. I'll let you run my phone battery down with full access to the Soba albums once we're back."

You obey quietly: wipe your tears, eat your gelato. Noya checks his phone while you freeze your brain, and at 12:52, the two of you run back to the bus and pile into your seats at exactly 12:55.

Once again, you underestimated him.

Footnotes

18. In draft one of this chapter, I mixed up Nekoma and Shinzen's locations, so I laid out this whole itinerary for getting back from the weekend training camp to Miyagi and researched rest stops along the route they were most likely to take and settled on one in Tochigi before remembering that Nekoma was NOT the school based in Saitama and Karasuno would take a totally different route home. I had to re-write this section to accurately go off of what was available at the rest stop they would actually stop at, which makes me deeply sad for two reasons. One: the rest stop in Tochigi had lemon milk, which is now the second food item I have an aching urge to try someday as a result of research for this fic. Two: the sentence that originally started this scene was, "You get a karaage bowl and Noya gets the hamburger steak", which I personally prefer the general rhythm of. Unfortunately, neither of these items were on the menu at the rest stop they're actually at.

Dobson's Patreon: An Addendum to His Monument of Sins

(The following is a submission from @soyouareandrewdobson, meant to be an addendum to the multi-post submission @ripsinfest made a while back. Ironically, this one also had issues when being submitted, so I’ll be copypasting it here with all the images and links originally intended.)

In 2018, user @ripsinfest wrote a multipart series of posts for THOAD, recounting Dobson’s attempt to establish a patreon in 2015 and how it resulted in failure on a massive scale, to the point that his patreon is arguably “a monument to all his sins”.

Personally I think the post series is extremely well researched, rather “neutral” in terms of tone (letting the posts provided as evidence speak more for themselves than the opinion of the writer) and gives a detailed but quick rundown on what went wrong. Primarily that Dobson overestimated his own “value” as an artist and did NOT attempt to give his few supporters what they wanted through his artwork posted around the time.

I do however want to use the opportunity to also point out at certain obvious things that in my opinion (and likely the opinions of others) added to the failure of the patreon account, that were not accounted for in detail and are primarily related to how the internet perceives popularity and Dobson’s inability to understand, how to “sell” and make himself look good to the public.

To begin with, let’s just point out a certain truth about making money via Patreon: To do so, depends a lot on your popularity as a content creator online. That is simply because the more popular you are, the bigger your fanbase is and as such the more likely a certain percentage of people may be willing to donate money to you and your work in hopes they get something out of it, even if it is just the altruistic feeling of having helped someone they “like”. It doesn’t take a genius to see, how e.g. internet reviewers such as Linkara or moviebob (around 2800 and 4400$ earnings via patreon each month respectively) can make quite some money, while other, more obscure content creator or artists barely make money to go by, earning essentially pocket money at best.

In addition, popularity is fleeting. A few years ago e.g. internet personality Noah Antweiler aka The SpoonyOne managed to earn 5000$ a month via patreon, just shortly after establishing his account. But his lack of content over the years AND his toxic behavior online resulted in a decline of popularity and with it people jumping off his Patreon. As such, Antweiler only earns nowadays around 290$ a month via Patreon and most of that money is likely form people who have forgotten they donate to him in the first place anyway.

And Noah is not the only one who over the course of the last couple of years lost earnings. Brianna Wu makes barely more than he does, despite having once been the “darling” of the internet when the Gamergate controversy was at its peak. Many Bronies who once made more than 2k via video reviews on a show about little horses at the peak of its popularity (2013-15) earn less than 300-800 on average nowadays because interest on the show as well as people talking about it has declined.

Heck, in preparation of writing this piece I found out, that one of the highest grossing patreons nowadays is “The last podcast on the left”, a podcast that earns more than 67k a month by making recordings on obscure and macabre subjects on a regular basis.

So there you have it folks: As the interests of the internet users change, so does the popularity of certain people online and -in case they have a patreon account or similar plattforms- their chances of making money via their content.

Which now brings us back to Dobson, who was not popular at all at that particular time and managed to become even less popular as the months and years passed by.

Sure, Dobson had his fans via deviantart, people knew who he was. But the later was more because of “infamy” than popularity and the number of fans he had accumulated online were representing people interested in him at least since 2005 and did not quite represent his actual present day numbers of supporters at the time.

And mind you, the number of supporters was less than 100k, most of them likely underaged deviantart users. And if my research indicates something, then that most content creators with a halfway decent patreon earning need at least 100k+ followers in total. Because of those fans, only around 1-3% will on average then spend money on you, if you actually create content they enjoy and on a regular basis.

Which brings up the next major problem: Dobson did not create content people enjoyed and that in more than one meaning of the word.

On one hand, as pointed out by ripsinfest, he barely released any content at all over 2015 after a few initial months, despite the fact that he was obviously active online a lot, as shown by his presence on twitter. On the other hand, the few things he did create were not the stuff people wanted.

As an example: If you go to a restaurant and pay for a pizza, you expect the cook to give you a pizza. If however for some reason he just gives you a soda, you get ripped off and never come back. In Dobson’s case, the thing people wanted was not pizza but comic pages. But what he delivered was mostly bland fanart, such as of Disney and Marvel characters crossing over or KorraSami. Sure, a few strips of “So…you are a cartoonist” were still released at the time, but not really many.

To give an overview: Taking the release dates on Dobson’s official SYAC site into account, he released around 16 strips of it between March and August of 2015, the last two being “No Leia” being titled “Zip line”

Afterwards, the next official strip released was “Anything at all” in October of 2016.

Now to be fair, there was at least one more strip at the time Dobson released via patreon, that is also save to see on kiwifarms and other plattforms, which has not been uploaded to his official SYAC page. Likely because he simply forgot about it.

But I think that in itself should tell you something about Dobson’s work ethics when it comes to his webcomics. He promoted his patreon in his own video as a way to ensure he can make comics in a timely fashion again for others to enjoy, but in an environment where certain artists are capable to create multiple strips per week at minimum, Dobson could overall not manage to produce more than 16 over a course of six months, which means an average production of 3 strips per month.

For comparison, Tatsuya Ishida of the infamous sinfest webcomic (a garbage fire of epic proportions from a TERF who I think should be put on a watch list) has produced on average 4 strips per week, including full page Sunday strips, for years and nowadays even releases stuff on a daily basis to pass the covid crisis. So a mad man who wants to see trnas people die, has better work ethics than Dobson.

In other words, people expected Dobson to actually get back into creating comics (with some even expecting a return of Alex ze Pirate), but he got in fact even lazier than before, releasing only SYAC strips and random fanart as a product. Which he then also tried to justify as his choice to make because a) he had mental health issues and b) no one can tell him what to do.

And sure, people do not need to tell you what to do. But when people pay/donate money to you expecting to get a certain product in return, they should get the product. Linkara e.g. by all means doesn’t NEED to review comics to have a fullfilling life, but he got famous for his reviews, people want to see his reviews and they pay him for those reviews. So obviously, he will continue those things.

Then there is also the fact that despite Dobson’s claims how he wants to create comics for everone to enjoy and that he aims to keep his artwork online for free so anyone can view it…(his exact words in his promotional video AND text on his patreon once upon a time)

…the reality was, that he wanted to use patreon as a paywall. Something I actually kinda pointed out at on my own account (shameless self promotion) once, but want now to elaborate a bit. Basically at the time Dobson opened up his patreon, he also was on the verge of leaving deviantart as a platform people could look at his work behind. Which he eventually did.

Meaning that the only major platforms for people to watch any “new” stuff by him were his patreon or art sites such as the SYAC homepage or andysartwork. Which granted, he did EVENTUALLY put his stuff on.

But unlike other content creators who would put “patreon exclusive” new content up on more public plattforms often within a few days, weeks or a month after making them “patreon only” at first, Dobson waited longer and did barely anything to promote his sites as places to look his stuff up for a public audience. In doing so creating a “bubble” for himself that hurt him more than it helped, as Dobson made himself essentially come off as a snob.

A snob who did not create content for everybody to enjoy, but ONLY for those willing to pay him at least one dollar per month. As evident e.g. by the fact that as time went by, certain content was never released outside of his patreon at all, such as a SYAC strip involving Dobbear screaming at the computer because he saw a piece of art that featured tumblr nose.

Lastly, there is the issue of his patreon perks and stretch goals.

See, his perks were essentially non existent. Aside of the beggars reward of “my eternal thank you if you donate 1 dollar”, two other perks that come to my mind were the following: If you donated up to 5$ at minimum, you got your name thrown into a lottery to potentially win buttons and postcards of his artwork. Unsold cheap merch from years prior he failed to sell at conventions basically. There was just a problem with that thing: That lottery thing, which he also was only going to initiate when he reached a stretch goal of 150 dollar a month? It was illegal!

Patreon itself has in their user agreement a rule that forbids people from offering perks that essentially boil down to “earning” something via gambling, which this lottery by Dobson was.

(THOAD chiming in here to add that, in addition to all this, he fully admitted he would be excluding Patrons that he “knew were clearly trolls” from the lottery. Which made the already illegal lottery also fixed, so...yeah.)

The next thing coming to mind was his “discount” on previous books of his he offered online, if you donated at least 10 bucks per month to him. Or to translate it: You would get a bare minimum discount at pdf files of books such as Alex ze Pirate and Formera (you know, the permanently cancelled Dobson comics) if you paid up 50-75% of their original price on Patreon already. And considering the quality of his early works, he should have given you at least a book per month for free if you dared to donate him that much.

As for the stretch goals… lets go through them, shall we:

100$: A wallpaper per month. Something he did provide with eventually, but barely. And after less than five of those he stopped to make them overall

150$: Monthly Gift basket Lottery, which as I stated, was illegal and almost got him into serious trouble with his account. Also not an initial stretch goal he made up but instead came up with a few months into his accounts existence. Finally it got temporarily replaced by Dobson playing with the idea to use 150$ per month to open up a server and art site where people could upload stuff for free similar to deviantart, but under his administration. Promising a “safe space” for other artists. Which considering Dobson’s ego and inability to accept criticism or delegate responsibilities would have likely ended like this:

175$: Establishing a Minecraft server for him and his fans to play on. Meaning Dobson would have just wasted time he could spend on creating comics to endulge in his Minecraft obsession.

200$: Writing a Skyrim children book. Aside of the legal nightmare that this could have been (I doubt Valve would have been happy of someone else profiting of their property) I have to ask, who was even interested in Skyrim by 2015 anymore? Sure, Skyrim was a popular game and it had its qualities, but it was also a trend that had passed by that time. So in other words, there was not a market to cater towards here.

300$: A strip per week guaranteed.

… are you fucking kidding me? 75$ per strip essentially? Something people expect you to produce anyway if you want to be considered a “prolific” creator worth supporting online? Imagine if certain internet reviewers would do that, telling you that if they do not earn at least a certain amount of money, they will not produce anything, period, or less than usual. And Dobson had already proven that he can release more than just one comic within a few days, if he is motivated by enough spite.

600$: Starting a podcast with his friends to talk about nerd culture. In my opinion could only work under the assumption that people even like the idea of listening to Dobson and his opinions. Which considering how very little people like talking to him sounds doubtful. Also, considering how Dobson tends to be late to the party when it comes to nerd culture, likely tending to be out of date faster than he could upload. Finally... what friends?

700$: Returning the love, as he says it, by donating some of the money patreon users gave him to other content creators. This in my opinion is the most self defeating cause possible. On one hand sure, being generous and all that. But essentially Dobson admits here he would blow the money people give him to support HIS art on others, essentially defeating the purpose of HIS own account. He also does not clarify how much of that money he would donate, meaning there was a high chance that he would spend less than 10% of it on other creators, only creating the illusion of support while putting the actual earnings/donations into his own pocket.

2000$: A massive jump ahead. 2000$ per month would result in him getting better equipment (as in a new computer e.g.) and as such “potentially” make more comics. Mind you, only potentially.

This goal in my opinion is also the most fucked up one. Primarily for the following reasons:

Lets say Dobson would have achieved the goal and actually earned over 2000$ per month for at least a year. His annual earning would have been 24k, minus whatever he had to pay as taxes and payment for using the patreon service. And what would he do with this money? Get himself a better computer and equipment by paying a minor fraction of it once. Then he could use that computer for years to come while still having over 10k in his account, plus his monthly earnings. And he may still just produce 3-4 comics a month of a series that has as much depth to it than Peppa Pig if not less.

Sure, many patreon users have 2k+ as a stretch goal on their accounts to signify that if they could make that much monthly, they could have the necessary financial security to focus their time primarily on their content instead of a regular job. And if the content they create is actually well made, many people would support that or be okay with it.

But 2000 dollars to buy ONE computer and not account for how this money will add up over time? And that in light of such profits people may actually expect you to create more than you barely do already? That is either a case of narcissism, plain stupidity because you can't look further than 5 feet or just shows how Dobson did not understand at all the tool he had at his disposal.

Bottom line: Dobson, like many times before, fucked it up. He overestimated the potential support and resulting profits he could make, he expected that his name alone would be enough to assure gainings instead of creating content to justify support and he was unwilling to really give his supporters anything worthwhile back.

And while I am sure that there were also many other factors guaranteeing his failure, those at least to me, were his "common" mistakes most other people familiar even with the basics of internet popularity would ahve avoided.

Harrison didn’t believe in love. He didn’t fall in love. He did a lot of things, but he didn’t fall in love.

Unlike you, his best friend.

You believed in love. You fell in love. A lot. And when you were in love, you were madly passionate about him.

Unlike Harrison because he simply didn’t fall in love.

“C’mon, just this once.” You begged, trying to get him to watch your all-time favorite movie, The Princess Bride.

“No way.” He laughed, shaking his head.

“Why not? You veto all of my movies.” You pouted. Harrison sat down beside you on the sofa, a bowl of popcorn in his hands. You moved the blanket so that it was covering both of you and he set the bowl down in his lap.

“I hate rom coms. True love? It’s just bullshit.” He said before shoving a handful of popcorn in his mouth. It was the same argument every Thursday with him. For the past few years, you and Harrison would have regular movie nights on every Thursday night, and every Thursday (when it was your turn to choose) you would suggest a rom com. You only allowed him to veto the genre because you didn’t want him choosing any sort of horror movie.

“No, it’s not.” You shook your head, continuing to search Netflix for a good flick.

“It totally is. Look at you and Anthony. How long did that true love last?” He raised his eyebrows at you as he smirked.

“Eight months.” You grumbled. You turned to look at Harrison, “What about you and Lily?” 

“Long term friends with benefits.” He corrected you. “We weren’t dating. We never even held hands.”

“Oh, right. Forgot about your ridiculous rules.” You rolled your eyes, looking back at the TV.

Harrison had three rules when it came to his “relationships”:

1. No holding hands because that’s “far too intimate”- you just liked to mock him for being scared of coodies. 

2. No pet names because they create attachment. “Haz” was only acceptable in bed. 

3. No cuddling because, again, it’s too intimate.

And you were the unspoken exception to all three of those rules, which was why you were technically cuddled up to him right now.

“They’re not ridiculous. They’re established boundaries.” He argued.

“Please, you only established those boundaries to keep yourself from falling in love.” You fired back.

“I like my rules, okay? They’re better than falling in love with every person that lays eyes on me.” He quipped.

“I do not.” You protested.

“Fourth rule. You can’t mock me for my lack of love life when you also don’t have a love life.” Harrison stated as he shoved some more popcorn in his mouth.

“You can’t involve me in your stupid rules.”

“Yes, I can. I just did.”

“Whatever.” You sighed, “How does ‘John Wick’ sound?”

“Completely unromantic, so I’ll take it.” He smiled, smugly. You shoved his shoulder as you started the movie.

“What are you doing Saturday?” You asked quietly. The movie played on in the background, but you weren’t paying much mind to it.

“Probably just going out.” Harrison shrugged. You knew exactly what that meant; he’d go out for drinks with Tom or any number of other friends and find some hot broad to hook up with for the night. “What’s up?’

“My sorority’s having a formal. Anthony was supposed to go with me, but,” You trailed off. You weren’t sure why you were so quiet about the subject; it’s not like Harrison hadn’t been your ‘date’ to events before. He was your prom date back in high school because your boyfriend had, of course, broken up with you just beforehand. Harrison stepped in to save the day like he always did; no matter which boy broke your heart, you always had Harrison by your side. He was the one who’d help you through a bad breakup- and you were the one who’d help him through a bad hangover. 

“Do you want me to come?” He asked.

“Yes.” You admitted, “I just know everyone else has a date, but I don’t want to disrupt your boys’ night.”

“Of course I’ll go with you.” He replied with a soft smile. “I’ve got you.”

And so, just two days later, Harrison stood in his bedroom, unsure of which tie to wear for your formal. You had sent him a picture of your dress, but that wasn’t much help.

“You going somewhere?” Tom asked as Harrison came into the living room in his dress shirt and slacks.

“Which tie looks better?” Harrison held up the two ties by his neck.

“The one on the left.” He replied, still eyeing his roommate skeptically. Harrison tossed the back up tie on the couch and quickly began to tie the one Tom had chosen. “Where are you going? You don’t wear ties for dates.”

“Y/N’s got a formal.” He answered, looking in the mirror and checking his tie.

“Are you two dating yet?” Tom laughed from his spot on the sofa.

“Dating? No.” Harrison shook his head as if his friend had just said something blasphemous. “That’d be gross.”

“You’ve been friends for how long? You’re so into her, mate.”

“I’m not into her. Besides, I don’t do relationships and all Y/N does is relationships.”

“Have you ever thought that maybe you’re so afraid of commitment because you’re in love with your best friend, but you’re too scared to admit it?”

“Just because you’re seeing a psych major doesn’t mean you get to say shit like that. And I’m not in love with her!” Harrison shouted as he rushed back to his bedroom.

“Whipped.” Tom muttered. Harrison’s tie dilemma had set him back and now he was running late. He pulled on his shoes and grabbed his jacket, quickly putting it on. He checked his hair (and teeth) one last time in the mirror and sprayed one last thing of cologne before heading out the door.

“What took you so long?’ You huffed when he finally arrived at your place to pick you up.

“Couldn’t choose a tie.” Harrison explained as you reached over to straighten it.

“Well, I like this one. It brings out your eyes.” You said as he drove off towards the formal’s event center with a confident smile on his face.

A few weeks passed after your formal and Harrison found himself pondering on Tom’s words. Was his fear of commitment because he was into you? He refused to even consider the option that he was in love with you- that was ridiculous. Him being in love? With you? That’s the best joke he’s heard all year. Besides, there was no way you could possibly be in love with him. 

“Haz? Harrison!” You snapped your fingers in front of his face, drawing him out of his deep thought- about you.

“Yeah?” He asked, blinking away his thoughts. His eyes hurt, but he was sure that was from pulling an all-night because here the two of you were, in the library’s 24-hour section, deep in midterm season. He removed his glasses to rub his eyes, groaning, “What’d I miss?”

“I was just asking if you had plans on Friday.” You said.

“I was going to go out. What’s up?”

“Well, my friend-”

“You’re not trying to set me up with anyone, are you?” Harrison peered at you questioningly. 

“It’s just a double date.”

“A double what now?” He asked, not quite sure if he heard you right. He began to fiddle with the pages of his business textbook nervously.

“A double date.” You stated, “You know, a date where two people who like each other hang out alone, and it becomes a double date with a second couple there?” Harrison decided to ignore the fact that your description of a date was just the romantic version of anytime that he hangs out with you. “As I was saying, my friend, Maggie, knows this guy, and she wants to set me up with him. To avoid the whole awkward blind date thing because I hate that, Maggie suggested a double date.”

“So I’d be Maggie’s date?”

“Yes. You don’t have to actually be into her, but just- can you come along so I can just meet the other guy? He sounds like a great guy.” You pleaded, giving him your best puppy dog eyes.

“Y/N, you know I don’t-”

“Haz, please.” You pouted this time, putting your hands on top of his.

“Alright, but just for you.” He caved. “Yay!” You smiled as Harrison thought to himself ‘I could look at that smile for days’. He quickly shook those thoughts from his head, turning back to the book in front of him. He was absolutely not into you.

When Friday came around, Harrison told you he’d pick you up, just like for your formal. He stood in his bedroom, looking at himself shirtless in the mirror. He had three button-up shirts in his hands and he was trying to decide which one would look better on him. His room was trashed from him digging through his closet just to find the right jeans. He didn’t really go on double dates- in fact, he’s never been on one, so he didn’t know what he was expected to wear. He let out a sigh, looking over at his open door as Tom passed by his room with his eyes glued to his phone.

“Tom, come here for a second.” Harrison called out to him. Tom stood in the hallway, eyebrows raised at his friends’ condition. “I’ve narrowed it down to three shirts. Which one?”

“Middle one.” Tom replied almost immediately. Harrison had to admit, the other two were awful compared to the middle one, and he didn’t know why he had them as options. “Got a nice date?”

“Y/N wants to go on a double date.” He explained, pulling on the shirt and buttoning it up.

“You’re finally going on a date with her?” Tom asked in disbelief.

“No.” Harrison shook his head quickly. “Her friend is introducing her to this guy, and I’m going out with that friend tonight.”

“So you’re going to sit through Y/N being on a date?”

“I’ve done it before.”

“Yeah, but you’re always a grump about it the next day and you’re always hungover the next day.”

“I gotta go or else I’ll be late.” Harrison said, shaking off his roommate. With one last check in the mirror, he was ready to go and practically bounded out the door to his car.

“You’re looking sharp.” You stated, getting into the passenger seat of his car when he pulled up to your house.

“You look good.” Harrison replied once he had taken in your outfit of a simple floral dress.

“We’re going to that pizza place downtown.” You told him and he drove off, heading for your destination.

“So what’s Maggie like?” He asked.

“She’s a total sweetheart. I met her in my econ class last semester.” You said and he hummed in acknowledgement, “You don’t have to like her.”

“Depends on the beer at the pizza place, maybe I’ll like her a lot.” Harrison joked, making you playfully punch him in the shoulder.

“She’s nice.”

“I don’t like nice girls. That’s all I’m saying.” He shrugged with a chuckle.

“Don’t get drunk on this date, for me?” You pleaded, already knowing where his mind was headed.

“Fine, I won’t.” He shook his head with a smile as he pulled into the parking lot.

Once he had parked, the two of you made your way inside, where you met up with Maggie and your date, James. You and James clicked right away, meanwhile Maggie would try to strike up a conversation with Harrison, who would seemingly try his hardest to not interact with her. You would sometimes kick him under the table as a way to say “start flirting or else” and he’d take the hint for the next few minutes.

After you all had finished your pizza and a first round of drinks, James suggested you all go down to the pub for real drinks. Harrison drove you again over to the pub, giving you the opportunity to talk to him.

“Really? You’re not even going to try with Maggie?” You asked when the two of you were finally alone in his car.

“I’m not feeling it.” Harrison shrugged, trying to brush it off.

“I’ve seen you flirty off your ass with a fever, don’t bullshit me with the “not feeling it” excuse.” You stated.

“I just-“ he sighed, “I really am not feeling it.”

“Just try? At least talk to her. For me?” You turned on your best puppy dog eyes for him.

“Okay.” He grumbled, giving in to your pleas.

Harrison had told you he wouldn’t get drunk and that he would at least try to talk to Maggie. But once you all ended up at the pub, he wasn’t sure if he could keep his end of the deal. Harrison couldn’t describe it, the annoying urge in his gut to physically take on James for talking to you. He was so focused on you and James flirting up a storm across the high table that he could barely hear Maggie talk. You excused yourself to go use the bathroom, and when you returned to the table, Harrison was gone.

“Where’d Harrison go?” You asked, eyeing his empty seat.

“He, uh, said something about the bar.” Maggie replied. You looked over and saw Harrison downing a couple drinks as he talked to the girl beside him.

“I’m sorry about him.” You apologized, “I had a great time tonight, but I really should get him home.” You quickly left off to where Harrison was.

“What do you say, you wanna come back to my place?” Harrison asked the blonde in front of him, his signature smile as charming as ever.

“Harrison!” You exclaimed, smacking him on the arm with your purse.

“Hey!” He yelped, turning to see you. You could tell by the glazed look in his eyes, he was absolutely gone.

“Is this your girlfriend?” The blonde asked, stepping back from Harrison.

“What? No.” You replied and the girl left. Harrison took another shot as you took the blonde’s spot in front of him. Snapping your fingers in front of him, you tried to draw his attention back to you, “Hey, quit it.”

“No, let me drink.” He whined. Before he could take another shot, you took it from his hands.

“You’re done, let’s go.” You said, grabbing his hands and leading him out of the bar. Harrison leaned on you until you managed to get him in the passenger seat of his car. He let out another whine once you got him situated and then got into the driver’s side.

“I’m sorry I’m drunk.” Harrison offered weakly, though it came out mostly slurred.

“Yeah, yeah,” You muttered.

You were thankful he didn’t say anything else on the drive back to his place; you were too annoyed by his actions to even try to talk about it. You dragged him up to his room, trying to keep him quiet so as to not bother Tom.

“I’m sorry.” Harrison whined, flopping onto his bed.

“We’ll talk about it in the morning, okay?” You said, turning away from him to get some pajama pants out for him and a shirt for you to borrow. When you shifted to face him again, he was standing lopsidedly leaning against the wall, trying to kick off his jeans. His shirt was abandoned on the floor next to him.

“God, Haz.” You sighed, moving quickly to help him before he fell over. You had one hand on his bare chest to keep him steady while you used the other to push him back onto the bed. Once he was laying down with his legs hanging off the bed, you pulled his jeans off his legs fully, leaving him in just his boxers.

“I’ve always wanted this.” Harrison mumbled, resting a hand on your face.

“Wanted what? To get shit faced on a double date?” You asked, trying to get him to move so he was actually in bed. He just grabbed your wrists in his hands.

“You.” He gave you the best drunk smile he could muster.

“Haz, you’re drunk.” You said, shaking his hands from your wrists.

“I want you, want you.” He clarified through another tired slur. You shook your head, helping him get into the bed fully.

“Go to sleep, Harrison.”

“I think,” He breathed out, struggling to stay awake as his sleepy blue eyes found yours, “I think I lo-“ He cut himself off with a giggle. “I almost said it, but I didn’t! That would’ve been embarrassing.” He hiccuped, “What a rom com trope that would be.”

“Good night.” You told him, finally getting him under the covers. You changed into one of his shirts and crawled into his bed next to him. He was passed out by the time you’d gotten there. You let out a small sigh as you watched his sleeping form.

“I want you too, Haz.” You whispered before turning around and drifting off to sleep.

The next day, Harrison let out a loud groan as he woke up. He blindly stretched his arms, not wanting to open his eyes yet. He rolled over to reach out for you and he opened his eyes curiously when he found an empty spot beside him. His memory was a bit spotty from last night, but he knew he made it home with you, which meant you would’ve been there in his bed with him, just as you always were whenever you brought him home after a night out.

“Y/N?” Harrison mumbled, slowly sitting up and looking around his room for you. The only trace that you had been there was a glass of water with a couple Motrin pills on the bedside table. He gratefully took the pain reliever and then checked his phone, only to find no new notifications from you.

‘Hey, where you at?’ He texted you, hopeful for a response. He waited a few moments, and when you still hadn’t responded, he decided it was probably time for him to go take care of his morning problem, something which happened a lot when he’d go to sleep wasted with you beside him.

Harrison kept checking his phone throughout the day, but nothing. You weren’t replying to any of his concerned texts, and he wasn’t sure what to do about it. He’d call you, but he knows you hate getting phone calls, claiming that they’re too awkward.

And so, to distract himself from his thoughts of you, Harrison did what he did best on a Saturday night- he went out with his friends to get shit faced and find a hookup. But with each drink he took back, he just thought of you.

He wasn’t even that drunk when he found a girl to hookup with, but she was flirty and had eyes like yours, so how could he say no when she invited him back to her place.

“Haz,” She moaned out as he kissed down her neck.

“Don’t- don’t call me that.” Harrison breathed out, pushing her back onto her bed.

“Harrison’s too much,” She whined, her hands in his hair as she tried to bring him back to kiss him on the mouth.

“Call me Harrison.” He said before continuing to kiss her passionately. She moaned in compliance, her hands finding their way down to his jeans, skipping his shirt altogether. She didn’t even get the button undone when Harrison pulled away from her.

“Harrison,” The girl huffed at the loss of his touch.

“I can’t do this.” Harrison climbed off her.

“What do you mean?” She asked.

“You’re not her.” He shook his head before bolting out of her room and her apartment. Before Harrison could even process what he was doing, he ended up at your place.

Knocking on the door in an urgent manner, he was disappointed when your roommate opened the door.

“She’s not here.” Your roommate said.

“Where is she?” Harrison asked. He watched as your roommate paused for a moment to take in his current state. He shifted, realizing that maybe showing up slightly drunk at your doorstep with obvious hookup hair and swollen lips wasn’t the way to go.

“She’s studying at the library.” She replied.

“Thanks.” He nodded and hurried off to the library.

The whole journey over to the library, Harrison felt like he was losing his mind. Was he really about to go to confess his undying love for you like in some shitty rom com? Was he actually in love with you or was that the alcohol coursing through his veins?

He ran up the stairs of the library, already knowing where you’d be. He stopped when his eyes landed on you. You were sitting at your usual table, the table you always sat at with Harrison, but James was in his seat. And it was James making you throw your head back laughing. Harrison’s heart stopped at the scene.

As he hung his head low and began his walk back home, he knew why he didn’t fall in love. Because the heartbreak hurt too much.

The day after your double date, when you woke up in Harrison’s bed, he had his arms wrapped around you. It wasn’t the first time you’d stayed over in his bed, but it was the first time you’d woken up like that. You slowly moved yourself out of his embrace, not wanting to wake him. You gathered him some pain reliever and a glass of water, knowing he’d need it when he did eventually wake up. You let out a sigh when you set out this water and pills. He was so peaceful when he was asleep, and as attractive as he was when he was awake, his sleeping form was another level.

It was hard enough being in love with your best friend, but it was even harder when he didn’t believe in love. And somehow Harrison had managed to make it even harder by almost telling you he loved you when he was drunk last night. But he couldn’t have loved you, he was so adamantly against love; it just wasn’t Harrison.

You weren’t sure how much he’d remember when he woke up. You were scared to have that conversation with Harrison if he did remember what he said, or well what he almost said. You did what you’d never done before- you left.

All day, Harrison would text you, asking what happened and if you were alright, but you were at the library, trying to maintain your focus on your studies. Somehow, James had managed to find you in the library that evening. You offered him Harrison’s seat because, well, it was a Saturday night and you hadn’t spoken to Harrison all day- he was most likely off hooking up with a random girl.

But you almost wished you hadn’t invited James to sit with you. Sure, he made you laugh, but it wasn’t the same as with Harrison. You couldn’t focus on your studying with his not so subtle flirtatious jokes. After another small fit of laughter, you opened your eyes to see Harrison leaving the library. His back was to you and his shoulders were slumped in defeat. You sat on the edge of your seat; there was something wrong, he wouldn’t come here if everything was fine.

“Are you okay?” James asked, pulling you from your trance on where Harrison had once stood.

“I- I have to go.” You hurried to pack your things, shoving your notebooks and pens in your backpack carelessly. You ran off out of the library, chasing after Harrison.

“Haz!” You called out, running up to him under the moonlight. He jumped, turning around to face you.

“Y/N,” Harrison’s hands flew to your sides, steadying you as you stopped in front of him.

“What are you doing here?” You asked.

“I was just walking home. It’s nothing, go back to James.” He shook his head, trying to play it cool, but you noticed the tension in his voice.

“What are you really doing here?” You questioned again.

“There’s just-“ He sighed, “I want to tell you something.”

“Yes?”

Harrison sighed again, his fingers rubbing your waist nervously. When he realized what he was doing, he stepped back and dropped his hands from your sides. He looked anywhere, but in your eyes.

“Haz, you know you can tell me anything.” You said, reassuringly. Harrison took your hands in his, making you realize the gravity of what he so desperately needed to say- he was breaking another rule with you.

“I’m- I’m in,” He groaned, tripping over his words. You held back a soft smile, you’d never seen him like this. It took him another moment before he found his words and his blue eyes found yours.

“I’m in love with you, okay? I- I am so crazy about you and I love you. I love you.” Harrison repeated, nodding his head in affirmation, “I never believed in true love or any of that mushy shit, but you made me believe in that. You are the one that showed me love is real.” He paused, cringing a little, and you could tell he was still fighting the alcohol’s hold over him, “I’m not saying this just because I want to hook up with you. I mean I definitely want to, but I want to be your- your boyfriend first and foremost.” He tripped over his words as he said ‘boyfriend’ for the first time in ages when referring to himself, “Screw my stupid rules. I want to hold your hand, I want you to call me Haz whenever you want to, I want your cuddles, I just want you. You’re the only exception.” He paused when he realized you were quiet, “Please, say something. I feel like one of those guys in your romance mo-“ You cut him off by pressing a kiss to his lips.

“I love you too, Haz” You smiled, emphasizing the nickname, and Harrison just pulled you in for a longer, more passionate kiss. He let go of your hands and wrapped his arms around your waist, tugging you even closer to him.

He may not have believed in love before, but he certainly did now as he held you in his arms, kissing you underneath the moonlight.

You pulled away from kissing Harrison for a moment. “For the record, this is definitely a trope straight of a rom com.”

Most insurance brokers obtain both licenses, so if you only sell one form of policy, you only need to obtain the license that best suits your needs.

It is time to start preparing for the Rhode Island insurance exams after you have decided which licenses you will need.

Before taking the test in Rhode Island, you are not required to complete a certain number of pre-license credits. This means that it is entirely up to you to prepare for your test.

The majority of people opt to take an online insurance pre-license course. These courses are designed to provide you with the skills you will need to pass the exam. Others can learn on their own by purchasing books or other self-study materials.

It is a good idea to devote a week or two to study for this test. Take a little longer if you don't think you are a good test taker, but don't let it go on too long. 

The insurance test is the next step after you have completed all of your pre-license coursework or self-study. Each line of insurance you wish to carry would include a separate test. For these checks, Pearson Vue does deliver a "back-to-back" discount. This means that if you take two tests in one sitting, you can get a two-for-one discount.

This is a proctored exam, which means you will be in a controlled environment with a person watching over you. People who have never tested in a similar situation should keep this in mind and focus on calming down their nerves before taking the exam.

The cost of taking the exams is $80 for each attempt. When you arrive, you must have a photo ID and any other documentation requested by the testing facility.

Each exam is divided into two sections: general knowledge and state-specific knowledge. If you take an exam in Rhode Island and pass just one of the sections, you don't have to retake the section as long as you pass the other half within one year.

On the Pearson Vue Rhode Island Insurance page, you can register to take your exams and get more info. Keep your score report because you will need it in the next phase.

You are now ready to apply for your license after you have completed your exams and fingerprinting. If you passed the exam for more than one line of authority, make sure to apply for all of them.

An online application costs $120, plus a $5 NIPR fee, for a total of $125. There is a $50 license amendment charge if you want to add another line of authority later. On the NIPR Rhode Island website, fill out and submit your online application.

Prior to being licensed, the state of Rhode Island requires all insurance license applicants to request a background check. If you have any previous misdemeanors or felonies, your licensing efforts can be hampered. You must complete a background check with the Attorney General of Rhode Island. The hours for walk-ins are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Keep all of the paperwork they give you because you will need it for the next move.

Following the submission of your license application to the state, the licensing department will send you an email requesting your background check details as well as your exam score report.

Scan these documents and attach them to an email reply.

Your license application will be reviewed by the state after you have submitted it and met all of the other criteria. Your background check will be examined as well.

If all goes well, your license should be issued fairly quickly. It is possible that any items from your background check will need to be checked, which will slow down the issuance process. If this is the case, the state can contact you to get more information about the problems they have encountered.

Following receipt of the requested paperwork, the licensing department will review it for up to ten (10) days before sending you an email confirming that your license has been issued.

Where to begin? As most of you are no doubt already aware, Australia is currently enduring a major bushfire emergency, which began with fires in September 2019, which are ongoing and still posing major dangers. The past couple of weeks, since Christmas, have been particularly bad as the summer heats up and large masses of hot, dry air persist over the continent. I spent Christmas Eve with my family at an evening gathering. The weather was relatively cool, a nice change from some of the scorching Christmases we've had in the past few years. My aunt and uncle (who were hosting the event) told me of their plan to head down the south coast to their holiday home in the tiny beachside town of Lake Conjola, to spend some time relaxing over the summer holidays with their two children (young adults). I though nothing more of it, until a week later, on New Year's Eve. That day was very hot, with heatwave conditions across much of south-eastern Australia. This made the still-burning bushfires more intense and helped them to spread more quickly. I was keeping an eye on news sites for updates. Before I knew it, Lake Conjola was under direct threat. This town is at the end of a single access road running to the coast form the Princes Highway, the main north-south route along to the coast, here running a few kilometres inland. The fire burned across the highway, cutting it off both north and south of Lake Conjola, so rapidly that there was virtually no time between emergency authorities issuing an evacuation order, and subsequently having to close the road due to immediate danger. The fires closed in, cutting off Lake Conjola from the outside world. They burnt down power poles, cutting electricity to the town, and damaged cell phone towers. Just before communications were cut, my aunt sent the following photos to our family. These show a firefighting helicopter with water bucket collecting water form the lake, and then spot fires in the town ahead of the main fire front. My aunt messaged that her plan was to evacuate to the beach if the fire got close to the holiday house, where at least she could be safe. While the world rang in 2020, I had no idea if my aunt and uncle and their kids, or their house, would survive the night. I also had a friend who was down the coast with his wife and three young girls, in a separate holiday town a but further south. Their location was not under as immediate threat, but with the roads cut around them they also had nowhere else to go. I woke up on New Year's Day and checked the news. It was piecemeal because it was too difficult to get emergency authorities and reporters into the area, but indications were that the fire had gone directly through Lake Conjola. It wasn't until lunchtime on New Year's Day that I heard any news about my aunt and uncle. My cousin (their son) sent a message that many houses in Lake Conjola had been destroyed, but he didn't know if theirs was one of them. A bit later there was another message, saying that the street their house was on had lost no houses, so he presumed their house was safe. At this point I realised that he wasn't there in Lake Conjola himself. The next message he said that there was still no news about his mother (my aunt). It turned out that she had travelled down to the holiday house to get it ready for the holiday, buying groceries and so on. The rest of the family had been planning to go down a day or two later and join her, but they'd been stopped by the road closures on New Year's Eve, and never got there. My aunt was in Lake Conjola with no family. My cousin was naturally scanning for any news he could get and collecting information from any source he could find. The next thing he sent to us were photos taken in Conjola on New Year's Eve: He didn't say who took these photos, so I don't know. (I'm therefore unable to credit the original photographers - if you know, please let me know. I've since found some of the photos, uncredited, in this story from the Milton Ulladulla Times.) And that famous photo that made front page news around the world, of a kangaroo jumping past a house ablaze? That was taken in Conjola on New Year's Eve. That's where my aunt was trapped. At 3:30 pm, we finally had news from my aunt. She managed to find some patchy phone reception and sent word that she was safe, and the house was safe. The fire had gone through the tiny settlement of Conjola Park, a couple of kilometres west of Lake Conjola, and destroyed almost every house there. Fortunately for the residents of Lake Conjola itself, just as the fire reached the edge of town, destroying three houses, the wind had changed, blowing it away from the remainder of the town. My aunt was safe, but still trapped. The highway north and south was still closed with ongoing fires. It remained this way for the next three days. Lake Conjola had no power, no incoming food supplies, extremely patchy phone reception, and no way for anyone to travel anywhere. Emergency services had bigger things on their minds, with larger towns under threat and larger populations, up to 4000 people in some cases, to evacuate from more immediate danger zones. With the fire already turned back from Conjola, my aunt had to wait with limited food and fresh water, and no way to communicate. The road finally opened again on Friday 4 January, four full days after the town had been isolated. Emergency services personnel escorted small groups of vehicles out and along the highway to safety. No vehicle was allowed to travel without an escort, in case burnt trees fell and cut off the road - they didn't want people to go missing. Later that afternoon she was reunited with my uncle. This is just one small story from a disaster that is engulfing Australia. As I type this (on Monday 6 January), 25 people have been confirmed killed by the fires, 7 remain missing. Well over 1500 homes have been destroyed, as well as thousands of other buildings and structures. The total area burnt so far is over 80,000 square kilometres, which is larger than Ireland, almost as large as Austria. These numbers will continue increasing for weeks, as the fires continue to burn, unstoppable in the hottest part of summer, as we suffer the worst drought in recorded history. Even in places not directly affected by flames, the smoke from the fires is causing hazardous air quality across much of south-eastern Australia. For over a month now, air quality in Sydney (where I live) has been marginal some days, and officially "hazardous" on many other days. Visibility has been down to 100 metres or so because of thick smoke in the air, the sun shines down with an apocalyptic orange glow even during the middle of the day, and the smell of smoke is everywhere. Ash and burnt leaves fall from the sky, even in the middle of the city. Outdoor surfaces, wiped clean, are covered in a fine gritty ash the next day. Hospital admissions are up around 10-15% because of people experiencing increased asthma and other respiratory conditions. Canberra, which is a long way from any fires, has experienced several days in a row of horrible air conditions, with many institutions and government departments shutting down because it's too hazardous even inside the buildings for people to work. Historic towns, full of significant buildings, such as Cobargo, have been almost entirely destroyed. Mount Selwyn, a ski resort has been entirely destroyed by fire. Huge numbers of livestock are dead or dying, and there are fears that the task of disposing of the carcasses may overwhelm resources, leading to decay and the risk of disease spreading. An estimated 500 million wild mammals, birds, and reptiles have been killed. A fire on Kangaroo Island, a 4400 square km island in South Australia, has burnt almost half the island, killing over half the population of approximately 50,000 koalas there and injuring many others beyond recovery. The koala population on Kangaroo Island was considered the last bastion of koalas, as it's the only isolated wild population free of the chlamydia infection which is killing other koala communities. Agricultural losses are huge. Many of the destroyed buildings were old, from a time when asbestos was routinely used as a building material. The smoking ruins are now too dangerous to go near or clean up without a full environment suit, because of the risk of asbestos fibres released into the air. When and if the rain finally comes, there are fears it could wash enormous amounts of ash into our reservoirs, clogging treatment systems and threatening the water supply to major cities like Sydney. While this has been happening, the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been singularly unresponsive and unhelpful. In April 2019, prior to the Australian Federal election, a group of 22 former fire and emergency services chiefs from multiple states issued a public statement saying that Australia was unprepared for worsening natural disasters from climate change and Federal and State Governments were putting lives at risk. They requested a meeting with the next Government to discuss the increased risks and how to adequately fund and prepare emergency services for them[1]. By November, when the current fire crisis was already well underway, the Government had still not met with the group[2]. Morrison is the man who as Federal Treasurer in 2017 literally brought a lump of coal into Parliament during Question Time and told people how great it was to mine it and burn it[3]. As it was becoming clear just how terrible things would be in the week before Christmas, he took a holiday to Hawaii, which he cut short when it was clear how much public criticism this was attracting. Later, Morrison toured the destroyed town of Cobargo. Not to comfort people or ask what he could do to help. He tried to shake the hand of an exhausted volunteer firefighter, who told the Prime Minister, "I don't really want to shake your hand." Morrison reach for the man's right hand, but the firefighter pulled it away. Morrison then grabbed the man's left hand and gave it a cursory shake, before walking away.

Soon after Morrison spoke to a local incident controller of the Rural Fire Service: "Tell that fella I’m really sorry, I’m sure he’s just tired." The controller replied, "No no, he lost a house."

In the same visit, Morrison approached young mother Zoey Salucci-McDermott, 28 weeks pregnant, who had lost her home in the fire. As she was in the process of saying, "I'm only shaking your hand if you give more funding to our RFS [Rural Fire Service]," he reached for and took her hand forcefully - against her will - giving it a brief shake. "So many people have lost their homes ... We need more help," she continued, as the Prime Minister turned his back on her and walked away, letting a minder do the job of shushing the woman. Now, I'm not a politician, but I think a better option here would have been to: (1) not grab someone's hand - not a firefighter, let alone a young woman - when it's not being offered for a handshake, (2) listen to the people who are hurting, (3) tell them that you're listening, you understand that they're upset, and (4) ask them what they think the Government has done wrong and how it can change to make things better. I don't tend to be outspoken politically online, but when when things have gotten to the point where this sort of thing is happening, and I personally fear for the life of a relative in a disaster exacerbated, if not caused, by climate change, you can rest assured that I'm not happy about where we are, how we got here, or the role of the Australian Government in making things worse. The 5 Simple Marketing Metrics You Should Know

When you’re running a business, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with everything you need to do. A lot of business owners look at marketing as an afterthought. They’re focusing on other things.

That attitude’s a common one – but it’s not a great idea to ignore marketing. And while you might not have a ton of time to spend on marketing, there are a few basic marketing metrics that you should have at your fingertips all the time. In fact, not knowing them can negatively affect your business’s profitability over time.

#1: The Size and Demographics of Your Audience

Your audience, whether they’re subscribed to your email list or following you on social media, is the pool from which you’ll attract most of your new customers. It’s also representative of the people who’re most likely to buy from you even if they’re not in your audience now.

There’s no denying those things are important.

You should always know three things about your audience: – The number of people in your audience – Where they are – What they have in common with one another

Let’s look at each question in turn. The number of people in your audience is probably the easiest thing to track, but you’ll need to check multiple locations regularly.

For example, you can check: – Your blog metrics to see how many readers you have, on average – Your social media following on various sites (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram) – Your email and text subscriber lists

Getting a handle on the numbers will also help you understand where your audience is. You may notice that you have far more followers on Facebook than on Instagram.

The final thing you’ll need to do is to analyze your audience. On Facebook, for example, you can view age, gender, and geographical breakdowns of your audience. You can also see what interests they have in common. Having this data at your fingertips can help you build lookalike audiences and do a good job of creating content that your audience will enjoy.

#2: Your Online Review Status

Online reviews are important to every business. Research shows that 86% of all consumers read online reviews, and that 89% read company responses to reviews. Those aren’t numbers you should ignore.

To get a handle on your online reviews, you’ll need to:

Search for your company listings on review sites such as Google My Business, Yelp, and Angie’s List, and claim them.

Update your listings to accurately reflect your current address, phone number, business hours, and prices.

Set up a system for responding to all reviews, especially negative ones, in a constructive and professional way.

Find ways to encourage your customers to leave reviews for your business.

Another related “must” is to set up alerts, so you get notified when there’s a new review of your business. You’ll need to respond quickly to show existing and potential customers that you care about them and their experiences.

#3: Your Google Ranking

The third marketing metric you need to know – and it’s a hugely important one – is your website’s Google ranking.

You’ll need to conduct regular Google searches for your most important keywords and keep track of how you’re doing.

Your ranking for one page may be high while another page is down on the second (or third, or tenth) page of Google results. If that’s the case, you’ll need to improve your SEO and increase your visibility to improve your ranking.

Why does this matter? Well, research shows that the first result on Google’s SERP for any keyword grabs about 30% of clicks. The second and third positions can get as much as 10%, but after that the fall-off is precipitous. You’ll be lucky to grab 2% of the traffic.

The good news is that focusing on local SEO and voice search can help you improve your ranking – but you must know where you are now before you can attack the problem and rise in the ranks.

#4: Ad Performance

Whether you’re running just a few ads or juggling dozens of marketing campaigns, it’s necessary to track the performance of each ad. It’s the only way to know whether your marketing mix is right – and whether your money is going down the drain.

Let’s use Facebook as an example. Facebook provides tons of insights for businesses. You can see how many people your ads are reaching, get an overview of their demographics, and even track the days (and times of day) when your posts get the most engagement.

If you prefer an all-in-one solution that will allow you to track your performance on all social media accounts, you can use UTM tags to track them with Google Analytics. Or, if you prefer, you can use a social media tracking tool.

#5: ROI by Campaign

The final metric you should track is your Return on Investment, or ROI, for each marketing campaign. In case you don’t know, ROI is calculated as a percentage using a simple formula.

Here’s how it works: – Calculate your total revenue from the campaign – Calculate the total costs associated with the campaign – Subtract the costs from the revenue to calculate your profit – Divide your profit by the cost to calculate your ROI

For example, say you spent $200 on an email marketing campaign. Some of that money might be from hiring a writer to craft the emails and the rest might be the associated costs from your email provider.

Email marketing has a high ROI (4400%, to be exact). Let’s say that your revenue from this campaign was $9,000. That would mean the calculation would be:

$9,000 revenue – $200 cost = $8,800 profit, and $8,800 profit/$200 cost =  4400% ROI

ROI calculations will help you identify the marketing campaigns that are earning you the most revenue.

You can use that information to: – Rethink your marketing mix – Split-test and improve underperforming campaigns and ads – Put more money into the marketing tactics that are most impactful

You don’t need to be a marketing guru to run a successful business. You do need to be aware of these 5 key marketing metrics – and know how to use them to attract new customers and increase your profits.

The MSI B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI is a standard ATX board meaning that it measures at 12in x 9.6 inches. The motherboard features two aluminum heatsinks over the VRM for the CPU. A plastic cover accompanies the left heatsink and provides a cover to the top of the I/O panel. Two aluminum heatsinks are included for the M.2 SSDs below as well as an aluminum heat for the chipset. Unlike the X570 chipsets, the B550 doesn’t require active cooling and thus doesn’t contribute to the overall noise level of the PC.

  The area around the CPU socket is fairly clear and there shouldn’t be any components on the board that will interfere with a CPU cooler installation. MSI uses a stepped style heatsink for the VRM cooling so, the parts of the heatsink that are closest to the CPU socket are still low enough that most CPU coolers on the market should fit without an issue. However, always check beforehand just in case.

  Power to the CPU is delivered at the top edge connector in an 8+4-pin configuration. Not all the pins have to be used, in this review, I only used the 8-pin connector with no issues.

  The B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI has four memory slots and supports up to 5100 MHz DDR4 modules. Along the top edge of the board, there are two 4-pin headers for the CPU cooler or a water pump. Next is a 3-pin aRGB header. Moving around the right edge of the board, there are two more fan headers, the 24-pin ATX power, and a USB C case front panel connector.

  Continuing down the right side of the board is the SATA connectors followed by another 4-pin fan connector. Along the bottom edge of the board, there is a 2-pin power LED connector, the case front panel connectors, an additional 3-pin aRGB header, a case front panel USB 3 header, and two USB 2.0 headers.

  As we finish the tour around the edge of the board there is another 4-pin fan header, a LED control switch, a clear CMOS button, a fifth fan header, temperature sensor headers, a 4-pin RGB lighting header, and the front panel audio header.

  In the middle of the B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI, you’ll find the PCIe slots. There are two X16 slots. The top slot operates at x16 speeds whereas the bottom slot only operates at x4. Intermixed with the X16 slots are 3 PCIe x1 slots. At the top of the PCIe slots is an aluminum heatsink that cools the 1st M.2 slot. This slot supports PCIe 4.0 x4. The lower heatsink covers the second M.2 slot and supports PCIe 3.0 x4 and comes from the B550 chipset. Finally, a carbon fiber wrapped accent piece with the MSI dragon is attached to the aluminum heatsink for cooling the B550 chipset.

  The I/O panel features a DisplayPort, an HDMI port, a flash BIOS button, a PS/2 port with 2 USB 2.0 port under it. Next up there are two additional USB 2.0 ports with dual USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports under them. Wired network connectivity is provided by a 2.5 gigabit per second RJ45 connection and an additional USB 3.1 Gen 1 in red and a USB C connector. Antenna mounts are provided for the included wireless card. One digital optical out and 5 3.5mm jacks are provided for the audio solution.

MSI’s BIOS looks and feels the same throughout their product lines. Which, is a nice touch. I know a lot of other vendors do as well. Some however have a different look and feel depending on the motherboard. With that said, the BIOS is starting to feel a little long in the tooth and while it works just fine, it may be time for some updates.

The first time you enter the BIOS on the B550 Gaming Carbon, you’ll be presented with “EZ Mode” while there’s not a lot of tweaking options here, you can get the system up and running quickly. You can turn on A-XMP, AHCI/RAID, configure storage, and a host of other options.

  Pressing F7 will bring the BIOS into advanced mode. In this mode, all possible settings for the BIOs are exposed and can be tweaked. They will be found in the following menus.

    The settings menu and the settings submenus are where most of the configuration for the motherboard is done. Here you’ll find options for overclocking, integrated peripherals, USB configuration, and power management.

  The settings menu will also be where you set the boot options as well as save and exit from the BIOS.

  While there is overclocking options in the Settings Menu, there are many more options in the OC menu that can fine tune the overclocks on your CPU and memory.  If you overclock your memory there’s a feature here that allows you to try it before you boot.

  The hardware monitor is where you can set fan/pump speed curves based on temperature. The MSI B550 Gaming Carbon Wifi has a total of 7 FAN headers that can be configured.

  Lastly, there is the board explorer. By clicking on the red highlighted areas, the MSI BIOS will give you information of what’s plugged in there. Only slots that have a device plugged in will highlight for you.

  Since now both AMD and Intel use opportunistic boost clocks for the CPUs, for every CPU review, I run a single-core test in POV-Ray and capture the clock speeds for 60 seconds to verify the motherboard and CPU can hit the advertised speeds.

As you can see, the MSI B550 Gaming carbon hovers around that 4503 MHz mark with a couple of peeks into the 4.6 GHz. This is actually a pretty decent boost. Other boards I have tested show a slightly less average boost clock.

AIDA64 has a set of several 64-bit benchmarks to measure how fast the computer performs various data processing tasks and mathematical calculations. Multi-threaded memory and cache benchmarks are available to analyze system RAM bandwidth and latency. Benchmark pages of AIDA64 Extreme provide several methods to measure system performance. These benchmarks are synthetic, so their results show only the theoretical maximum performance of the system. The AIDA64 suite has various benchmarks for CPU, FPU, GPU, storage, and memory testing.

In both CPU and FPU testing with the B550, it keeps up with the more expensive X570 chipsets. This is a trend repeated throughout the benchmarks.

The 7-zip benchmark shows a rating in MIPS (million instructions per second). The rating value is calculated from the measured speed, and it is normalized with the results of the Intel Core 2 CPU with a multi-threading option switched off. So, if you have a modern CPU from Intel or AMD, rating values in single-thread mode must be close to real CPU frequency. There are two tests, compression with the LZMA method and decompression with the LZMA method. Once the total passes reach 100, the score is taken. 7-Zip gives the resulting score for decompressing, compressing, and an overall score.

  PCMark

PCMark 10 is a system benchmark for Windows PCs that focuses on common tasks performed in the office. PCMark 10 offers a variety of workloads categorized into four groups. The Essentials group includes web browsing, video conferencing, and app start-up time. The Productivity group includes tests based on spreadsheets and writing. The Digital Content Creation group includes photo editing, video editing, and a rendering and visualization test. The final group, Gaming, includes tests for real-time graphics and physics. It has three different benchmarks, PCMark 10, PCMark 10 Express, and PCMark 10 Extended.

To test the on-board audio on the MSI B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI motherboard, I use the Rightmark Audio Analyzer benchmark. To test the onboard audio of any motherboard, I follow the guide on RMAA’s site that talks about how to review Asus Xonar D2 in RMAA 6.0.5.

The built-in audio solution is perfectly adequate. It is in the range from what I’ve seen from other motherboards from MSI in the past as well as other manufacturers.

  Network Testing

For network testing, I have a QNAP QSW-1208-8C 10 GbE switch that is capable of Multi-gigabit switching. This means the ports on the switch will negotiate at 1 Gb/s, 2.5 Gb/s, 5 Gb/s, and 10 Gb/s. Since the LAN port on the Strix B550-I is 2.5 Gb/s capable I used this switch and another PC that is 2.5 Gb/s capable and tested using Performance Test 9’s network testing tool. For Wireless testing, I have a WIFI 6 Access point connected to the same switch and is connecting at 2.5 Gb/s. The same wired test PC is used.

test both TCP and UDP connections. TCP connections are connection based. This means the server and client talk back and forth to each other for every packet. Typically TCP will never reach line speeds. Still, I was able to average 1458 Mbps over TCP. UDP on the other hand is connectionless. This means the network clients (either server or client) send traffic without any back and forth communication. If the packet gets there, it gets there. UDP typically is a good indication of line speed and it shows here. My testing averaged 2057 Mbps. Wifi 6 is fast. With TCP I was able to reach an average of 581.3 Mbps and UPD averaged a bit faster at 667.1.

The MSI MPG B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI is a fine motherboard. From the packaging to the installation, it all just works. MSI may not have the fancy features of other motherboards and honestly, it doesn’t really need it plus it saves you a couple bucks here and there. The more I dive into the B550 motherboard the more I like them as well, the more I dive into MSI’s product line the more I like them as well. However, I’m not really impressed with EVERYTHING on the MSI B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI. The biggest complaint that I have is their BIOS GUI is getting a little long in the tooth and my opinion looks a bit dated. I think it needs a refresh. However, it does work and it is adequate for the task at hand.

  From a performance aspect, the MSI B550 Gaming Carbon met expectations. It was right in line with the X570 board from ASRock and the B550 motherboard from Asus. I do appreciate the fact that the MSI board tends to have a higher opportunistic clock than the other boards and results in slightly higher performance. It is a very slight performance increase but I’ll take any that I can get. My sample of the Ryzen 9 3900x does not overclock at all and it never has on any board that I’ve put it in. I did not win the silicon lottery with this CPU so I do not even attempt overclocking. There wasn’t one feature that stood out from the rest. All of them were just good. This motherboard is good all around.

The MSI B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI may not be for everyone. Some don’t like the carbon fiber accents and some may not like the MSI Mystic Light. I do have to say that Mystic Light is one of the less intrusive RGB lighting controls. The lighting on the board is done very tastefully and is easily shut off for those that don’t want it. MSI included enough fan headers and should please most consumers. The other thing that I appreciate is the M.2 slots are not covered by the entire chipset heatsink. Having individual heatsinks is a must if you swap out parts often.  Pricing on the MSI B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI as of this writing is $239. This isn’t the bottom of the barrel pricing but it’s not caviar pricing either. I feel that the price for this motherboard is decent. There are other boards for similar prices. The motherboard market right now is extremely competitive and we as consumers win when that happens. Overall, I would happily recommend this motherboard if you’re looking to upgrade or build a new system. AMD’s ecosystem continues to impress and MSI is right along with it.
