and you’ve never seen sokka so serious or concentrated on something and low key its very attractive

but also it only warms your heart because here is this boy who’s putting his all into trying to make a change in the world

and so it’s super serious and aang, katara, and toph are watching from a distance and getting frustrated bc y’all are actually taking this seriously

like the o n e time you’re alone y’all are actually getting shit done

but then

it happens

sokka sighs deeply and looks up, tired of looking at the map, and he freezes

there you are, sitting quietly, your bottom lip in between your teeth

sokka’s like 👁👄👁

and obviously everyone notices

now aang, katara, and toph are barging into the room making subtle comments

and toph is like “why is ur heart racing?”

and sokka’s like “stfu”

and you’re so confused but aang keeps elbowing sokka and motioning towards you 

katara is just giving you subtle winks and you’re turning bright red

“sokka why are you staring at (y/n)’s lips?”

“i am NOT!”

eventually it gets late and you two are left alone yet again 

you can tell sokka is kind of uncomfortable but you can’t help it

lip biting is a habit

the tiredness and frustration gets to sokka eventually and he finds himself leaning in closer and closer and closer

and bam!

y’all are kissing :’-)

the next morning the rest of the gaang wakes up to the two of you sleeping at the table, holding hands.

they all share a smile but you know damn well that they’re going to clown on you when you wake up.

Zuko

he’s not very subtle

y’all are probably tip toeing around each other but your feelings are very clear to everyone

whenever he’s around you, he gets flustered and he can’t help it.

your lip biting habit only makes it worse

you’ll be talking and he’s paying attention and then you stop to think and you bite your lip and he’s so distracted that he hasn’t noticed that you started talking again. 

it isn’t until a cool five minutes later that you realize that he doesn’t know what the heck you just said. 

it’s kind of funny actually

but yeah you catch on quickly enough and so does everyone else and soon enough you find yourself biting your lips at every possible chance

like, he’s sparring with aang? one look at you and aang is able to beat him in five seconds flat

he’s sword fighting with sokka? you’re in the background cheering him on and biting your lip in worry (it’s totally intentional) and sokka managed to land a blow

it works out though because you feel bad so you take care of him and clean his cut

you’re biting your lip in concentration when he decides he’s finally had enough and gently grasps your jaw, leaning in to press a kiss to your lips

now it’s you who’s a wreck and zuko has a smug smirk on his face

you do end up confessing though and when you join the others, they totally start revealing how you would do the lip biting thing on purpose

zuko is simultaneously mad and very happy and now every time you bite your lip on purpose (he can just tell), he can and will make you stop by kissing you

Sorting the main cast of AtLA into Hogwarts Houses

I know I’m late to the party because I’ve seen many different people tackle this before, but I feel like it is my civic duty as both a Potterhead and an AtLA stan to put in my two cents, since every single time I’ve seen it talked about people either misinterpret what each House values in their members or pick a House by taking into account only one aspect of their personalities. I want to make it clear that these are my own opinions, which I’m basing on the definitions we’ve gotten of the main traits of each House over the years and the “core values” of each AtLA character, and that I’m in no way am I trying to insult anyone who thinks differently. That being said, here goes nothing!

Let’s start with the easy ones. Namely, the Fire Siblings:

1) Azula is 100%, undoubtedly, definitely, incontrovertibly Slytherin. Just doing a quick rundown of the qualities Salazar Slytherin prized in his handpicked students, as stated by the Sorting Hat, Albus Dumbledore and Pottermore: Cunning? Check. Resourcefulness? Check. A disregard for rules? Check. Using any means to achieve her ends? Check. Shrewdness? Check. Ambition? Check. Self-preservation? Check. Pride? Check. An argument could even be made that, as a member of the Fire Nation Royal Family, Azula also kind of meets the “blood purity” criteria. I’m sure most of us agree on this. Even if she does exhibit a lot of loyalty to her father as well as courage and intelligence, there is just no contest. Azula is one of the most Slytherin characters I’ve ever seen outside of the Harry Potter universe.

2) In the same way, Zuko is irrefutably a Hufflepuff. Hear me out! I know that he’s very brave and daring, but when we think of Zuko, what is his most essential trait, what do people tell us again

about Zuko’s character?

He’s a hard worker. And what’s the House of the hard-working?

"You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffs are true, And unafraid of toil.”

You guessed it. Hufflepuff. Of course, that’s not the only trait valued by this House that he exhibits. Who is more loyal in the series than the child who got half his face burned off and still did his best to earn the love and respect of the one responsible? Who never faltered in his loyalty even when he was sent away on an impossible mission? Who spouted angry words most of the time yet was willing to let his ticket home go temporarily in favor of ensuring the safety of his Uncle and his crew? That’s right, our boy Zuko. That very loyalty to his father is what unfortunately bound him for the longest time, until he was forced to face what a monster he was and let go of it in favor of more important things, namely his own morals and his loyalty to his Uncle.

He also has an incredibly strong sense of justice, as proven by the above statements, as well as this moment:

and he can be incredibly patient when he needs to be, as seen during The Blue Spirit and the Southern Raiders episodes.

Hufflepuffs are also said to be fair (which he clearly is), dedicated (need I say more?), honest (which Mr. shouts-his-feelings-at-the-top-of-his-lungs and can’t-lie-without-being-obvious-or-glancing-away-and-has-been-found-out-every-time-he-tried of course is) and modest (this one he starts without but by the time he joins the Gaang there isn’t anyone more modest or humble)

As “an idealist with a pure heart and unquestionable honor” , Zuko is the Hufflepuffiest Hufflepuff to ever Hufflepuff and I will die on this hill

3) Another easy one is our girl Suki, whom I’d say is a Gryffindor through and through, even if she is very loyal to her friends.

The other members of Team Avatar are a bit trickier because they all exhibit a pretty even mix of traits from more than one House, but still if we just concentrate on their defining characteristics we can get to an answer. 

4) I’d argue that Sokka belongs in Ravenclaw, even though he is of course quite brave and extremely loyal to his loved ones, not only because he’s a strategist and an inventor, but also because, as best stated by Master Piandao:

Ravenclaws most value wit, learning, intelligence, creativity and wisdom (this last one is a bit iffy but I’m sure he’ll get there when he’s older), as well as priding themselves on being original in their ideas and methods. That’s Sokka to a T.

5) Katara gave me a hard time. She’s unbelievably loyal to her friends and family, she’s compassionate, patient, fair, hard working and dedicated, with a REALLY strong sense of justice, so a case can be made for Hufflepuff easily. However she can also be quite cunning when she wants to (most obviously during The Waterbending Scroll, City of Walls and Secrets, The Painted Lady, and The Runaway), she has a lot of ambition (if you count every variation of “I will make the world a better place by force if I have to”), she disregards the rules when it suits her (again The Waterbending Scroll as well as The Runaway) and she can be proud at times, so we could argue she’s a Slytherin. She’s also undoubtedly very intelligent and even quite wise for her age. It took me a while to decide but then I pondered; at her very core, what are the statements that define her? What words just scream “that’s it, that’s Katara”? They are, of course, these two phrases:

The first sounded incredibly Gryffindor to me, and the second is half Gryffindor half Hufflepuff, so it had to be between those two. As such, I decided to look into Gryffindor first. Katara is, of course, astoundingly courageous, but what else? I had to actually look up definitions for the Gryffindor traits besides courage because they all just kinda meant “brave” to me initially 😅, but what I found was:

*Nerve: “one's steadiness and courage in a demanding situation”. Yep. Who’s the most level-headed, steady and reliable person whenever the Gaang is in any kind of pinch? That’s right. Katara

*Daring: “adventurous or audaciously bold“. Yep. I’d say she ties with Toph for boldest in the Gaang

*Determination: “firmness of purpose”. Yep, absolutely. See the above image from the Painted Lady. ‘Nuff said.

*Chivalry: can mean 2 things, one is “sum of the ideal qualifications of a knight, including courtesy, generosity, valor, and dexterity in arms”. All of that is true of her (her “arms” being her waterbending), but I found it interesting that to be chivalrous can also mean “gracious and honorable toward an enemy, especially a defeated one, and toward the weak or poor”. I’d argue that this fits her even more. Once again, just take a look at The Painted Lady episode. 

*Courage and bravery: they can mean the same thing, namely “the ability to do something that frightens you” and of course that fits Katara, but the word courage in particular has another meaning, which is “strength in the face of pain or grief”...

I’d say she’s pretty good at that. I think that settles it, Katara is a Gryffindor.

6) For Toph I was split between Gryffindor (thinking of her brash, bold nature) and Slytherin for a while, but after looking into Katara and researching all those definitions I think I have to give it to Slytherin. Of course, Toph doesn’t seem to be very ambitious unless you count “being recognized as the greatest earthbender in the world”, but she is quite cunning. She knows exactly how to use her “poor helpless blind girl” persona to get what she wants, as seen both on The Blind Bandit and The Runaway. She’s also an extremely good actress, being able to play the “reserved and obedient little girl” to her parents for years, and being easily able to pick it back up when it suits her. 

She’s also stubborn, proud, and 100% willing to use any means, regardless of laws or rules, to get what she wants. 

As for self preservation? Remember that her response when asked to teach Aang, which was crucial to save the world but would’ve compromised her secret, was this:

Slytherins can also “hesitate before acting, so as to weigh all possible outcomes before deciding exactly what should be done “ and my first instinct was to say that it didn’t fit Toph at all, but what is Toph if not a person who “waits and listens before striking”? Slytherins tend to favor Neutral Jing it seems. 

Almost forgot that as a daughter of the Beifong family she’s sort of nobility and she technically also meets the “blood purity” criteria.

7) Finally, we get to my boy Aang. He was really difficult. He’s loyal, patient, fair, kind, modest (usually) and just but I can’t really call him a hard worker most of the time.  

He’s brave, adventurous, determined and chivalrous but he does tend to get discouraged during demanding or stressful situations (his friends always make it better though)

He’s creative, very wise for his age, and quite smart (except when he’s playing around with Sokka in which case they share one brain cell 😂)

He can even be cunning when he needs to be. If he ever went to Hogwarts, he’d definitely be a Hat Staller like Harry. I heard someone say once that they considered Aang a Gryffindor because he liked to show off a lot, but that’s not really a Gryffindor trait (think of Neville Longbottom, Remus Lupin, Harry Potter and Minerva McGonagall. I think any one of them would sooner Stupefy themselves than go show off their skills in front of a crowd for no reason other than to brag).

Once again, we must pin down what it is that defines him, what his core is. After much thought, I decided it’s this: 

It’s his compassion, which he learned from his people, and his desire to value and protect all life. It’s his loyalty to the ideologies of the Air Nomads of which he is the last remaining bastion. It’s his strong moral code, his sense of right and wrong, his wish to make friends and to believe the best of everyone. That’s his center. That is what makes him Avatar Aang. In light of that, I think we can consider Aang, first and foremost, a Hufflepuff.

In the end, Team Avatar is made up of one Ravenclaw, one Slytherin, one Gryffindor (two after Suki joins), and two Hufflepuffs

Ironic, that the House least valued in the Harry Potter universe is the one that houses arguably the most pivotal characters of Avatar the Last Airbender: Zuko and Aang. Fitting, that even in this they parallel each other.

This is already long enough so I don’t think I’ll do Mai, Ty Lee, or Iroh. Maybe some other time.

zukka hp au:  Zuko’s a Gryffindor in a family of Slytherins, and Sokka’s a Ravenclaw.

This is kind of random bits and pieces I wanted to add:

Suki might be my favorite in this au

She’s just so self-assured and knows who she is

She’s really really popular and she’s always got time for the younger students

Like no problem is too small 

You lost your cat? Get Suki. You need help on a potions essay? Get Suki. You’re really stressed and scared and worried you don’t belong? Suki’s always happy to listen and give advice if you want it

She’s a prefect and on track to be Head Girl. She’s extremely unbiased and all the Houses are happy to go to her. Even Slytherin, which surprised people at first, but she’s just a solid friend to everyone and doesn’t play favorites

She’s pretty dedicated to her work as well

Not much is known about the Kyoshi warriors at Hogwarts

They’re a tight knit group, but everyone has intense respect for them

They’re badass and they get shit done

Suki’s been playing Keeper since second year

She’s just that good

Other people thought that she’d want to be seeker, and she’s decent at it

She’s a wicked chaser

But she’s really reliable, so she tends to play Keeper because Gryffindor doesn’t really have anyone better at the moment

I’m kind of playing around with the idea that the Kyoshi also are werewolves? But I’m changing how that works. You’re either born a werewolf or you can learn how to become one with some variation on becoming an Animagus. But no one outside the Kyoshi know if that’s more than a rumor or not. Still intense respect. Werewolves are accepted by society in this au. Individual people and families might have their own issues, but none of that stigma. Still need to work out the kinks of this

For Toph- you can’t beat her in a duel

If you actually get past her regular magic, her earth magic just sticks you in a corner so you have to think about what you’ve done

She’s the youngest, but she knows she’s the best

She doesn’t talk about herself much, but you can tell her parents make her sad

She’s pretty sure she’s aro ace

If she can kick your ass, she’s satisfied

So that’s Suki in Gryffindor, Aang in Hufflepuff, Sokka in Ravenclaw, Toph in Slytherin, Zuko in Gryffindor

I’m not sure where to put Katara, I kind of really want Hufflepuff, because she’s reliable and loyal, but sometimes, she’s very Gryffindor

Also, Bumi is the headmaster

He’s absolutely nuts

But he drives Ozai and Sozin crazy

Because he knows EVERYTHING

I’m now wondering if Iroh should be potions master

Zuko’s favorite place is the lake

He likes to hang out with the turtleducks

And watch the giant squid 

Once he snuck down to the Slytherin common room to see the squid just swim around from the windows showing the lake

I am going to redeem Azula 

She might lose her mind a little first

But Mai and Ty Lee have her back

I’d really like to see Azula be friends with Suki

I also need to come up with backstory as to why Sozin and the water tribe have beef

Like everyone hates Sozin

But what is the specific crap

I think the water tribe hates them, because, shhh, it’s still a secret to the gaang, but he sent the man who ambushed and killed Sokka and Katara’s mom

But I haven’t worked out what exactly made him do it

I have to figure out what exactly the prophecy says

Maybe they thought it could also apply to the water tribe

Also, I swear zukka will happen

It’s just this is very enemies to friends to lovers

Like this will be the slowest burn

They might pine for a couple years

The Hogwarts train wasn’t as clean as Azula had expected it to be. She huffed in discontent, but decided not to say anything about it. She knew that most of the people around her weren’t used to the superior conditions she lived in and she would’ve get to used to them eventually.

Azula sighed before sitting down. Zuko crossed his arms over his chest while looking down on his younger sibling. He toyed with the idea of asking her if she would be alright, but he swiftly decided against it. Even if she was nervous – which was unlikely, since it was Azula that he was talking about – she would never admit it. Again, it was Azula he was talking about it.

Zuko signed. ‘I’ve already seen Sokka, so I’m going to see where he is,’ he muttered.

‘Fine,’ Azula said while checking out her nails. She didn’t as much as glare at her brother when he left het coupé.

Azula allowed her a few deep breaths. Today would decide what the next seven years of her life would look like, so she would be lying if she said she wasn’t a bit scared. It was a good thing she was such a good liar.

It had surprised her that Ozai had joined them to bring them to London. When Zuko had to leave for his first year it had only been Ursa. That had to be expected, since Ozai had neved liked his son. It hadn’t helped that Zuko had turned out to be a Gryffindor.

Azula on the other hand was Ozai’s favourite child and she was determined for things to stay that way. She had to be sorted into Slytherin.

It wasn’t really a family thing and Ozai had never mentioned to Azula that he had expected her to end up in Slytherin, but he had always praised his own house as the only true house. Slytherins wer cunning, ambitious and resourceful and Azula liked to think that she had those qualities as well.

‘Excuse me,’ someone said as a door shoved open. Azula looked at the girl. She had a very long braid, ligthbrown eyes and a very exciting grin. ‘Can I sit here?’ she asked.

It wasn’t someone Azula would classify as her ideal first new friend. She shrugged, eyes the girl thoroughly. ‘If you want.’

‘Thanks!’ the girl said. ‘My name is Tai Ly.’ She sat down on the other side of Azula and smiled eagerly.

‘I’m Azula,’ Azula said.

‘Nice to meet you!’ Ty Lee looked outside and waved.

‘Are you parents here?’ she asked.

‘They have dropped me off,’ Azula responded. ‘They’ve probably left by now.’

‘My parents always stay,’ Ty Lee said.

She was quit for a little while, until the train started moving. She watched her parents for as long as she could before leaning back.

‘Do you know in which house you’ll end up?’ Azula asked.

‘I don’t know,’ Ty Lee answered. ‘I have six sisters, and they’re all in Gryffindor. So everyone expects me to end up in Gryffindor as well, but I don’t know if it suits me. I mean, I’m their sister, not an exact copy, you know?’

‘My brother’s in Gryffindor as well,’ Azula said. ‘But I’m actually hoping that I’ll be sorted into Slytherin.’

‘I think I’m going to thrust the system to put me where I belong,’ Ty Lee said. ‘And I’m really hoping that’s not in Gryffindor.’

Azula smiled at the girl. Maybe she was not as bubbly as she had seemed.

‘Hello,’ another voice said. The girl had long black hair with two top knots. Her eyes were darkened by carefully applied eyeshadow and eyeliner and all her clothing was black. Azula decided that she liked this girl.

‘Can I sit here?’ Mai asked. ‘All the other places are full.’

‘Of course,’ Ty Lee said cheerfully, before Azula could respond. Mai sat down next to Ty Lee. They formed an astounding contrast – pink next to black.

‘We were just talking about the houses we want to be sorted into,’ Ty Lee said.

‘Slytherin,’ Mai said without second thought.

Azula could help but grin widely at those words. She really liked this girl. ‘Same,’ she said.

‘God, no I really want to be sorted into Slytherin,’ Ty Lee said. ‘I hope I will be, though.’ She pondered a few seconds before cheering up again when an old lady entered their coupé, asking if they were interested in candy.

‘No, thank you,’ Azula responded.

Mai looked at woman with a face that looked bored and annoyed at the same time.

‘Yes!’ Ty Lee exclaimed.

‘So, what house do you think you’ll be sorted in?’ Sokka asked towards the smiling boy that sat next to his sister.

‘Huffelpuff,’ Aang responded.

Sokka looked slightly disapproving, just as the girl that sat next to him. She had introduced herself as Toph and Sokka had noticed that there seemed something weird about her – but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.

Aang didn’t seem to notice it. ‘You?’ he asked.

Sokka huffed. ‘I’m in my third year,’ he said proudly.

‘So you have already been sorted?’ Toph said. ‘What house are you in?’

‘Ravenclaw,’ Sokka responded.

‘So you’re really smart?’

Katara snorted. ‘Not really,’ she said. ‘We were all kind of surprised when he wrote back home that he was sorted in Ravenclaw.’

Sokka glared at her, but decided to ignore her comment. ‘What house do you think you’ll be in?’ he asked Toph.

‘I’m a Slytherin, for sure,’ she responded. Sokka glared at her, but she didn’t see him. The realisation dawned on him that Toph seemed to be blind.

‘And you?’ Aang ask Katara. She frowned while playing with the red necklace around her neck. ‘I’m not sure,’ she answered. ‘My mom is a Gryffindor, my dad is a Slytherin. So maybe I’ll be a Hufflepuf as well, so that we’ll combine all houses.’

‘I think you’d make a very nice Ravenclaw,’ Sokka said. ‘You’re quite smart as well.’

Katara shrugged. ‘We’ll know soon enough,’ she said.

Toph was one of the first students to sit down. The entire crowd was looking at her. ‘Very brave… and very reckless,’ the voice said in her head. ‘But also very determined. Interesting.’

Slytherin, Toph thought.

‘I think that is indeed the best place for you,’ the voice said. ‘Slytherin will value you more than any other house… SLYTHERIN.’

‘Another one of you?’ the voice said in her head. ‘I’ve already seen six of your sisters, all in Gryffindor. And I’m sure you’ll find your place in…’

NO, Ty Lee thought. I’m not like my sisters.

‘Not like your sisters?’ the hat pondered. ‘A very strong urge to prove yourself, indeed…’

Slytherin, Ty Lee thought.

‘Slytherin will make you great, that’s for sure,’ the voice said. ‘But I still think Gryffindor is a very good place for you… no? You’re sure? I can see you are… in that case: SLYTHERIN.’

Mai wasn’t impressed by the crowd staring at her. She crossed her arms and waited for the hat to be placed on her head.

‘Hmm…’ the voice in her head said. ‘I’m not sure whether to pick between Ravenclaw or Slytherin.’

Ravenclaw, Mai wondered. She?

‘You’re more intelligent than you give yourself credit for,’ the voice said. ‘And Ravenclaw will inspire you to explore that side of you more… but you’ll feel at home in Slytherin as well. You’re determined and very cunning…’

Slyherin, Mai thought.

‘Really?’

SLYHERIN, Mai thought while frowning. She sat down next to the bubbly girl that had turned out to be a Slytherin as well. Who would have known.

Katara tried to find Sokka while she walked towards the head. Her heart felt like it was beating in her throat.

She sat down and tried to look confident, but she was sure that her nerves were visible on her face.

‘Very brave,’ said a voice in her head. ‘Very brave. But also very resourceful. Nothing will stand between you and your goal.’

Ravenclaw, Katara thought.

‘Ravenclaw? You’re smart, but I’m not sure if that’s the place for you. I’m quite sure it isn’t, to be honest. You’re more interested in knowledge you can use, not knowledge just for the sake of knowledge. No, Ravenclaw is not a good fit. Slytherin will help you to reach your potential, no question.’

But people will think I’m evil, Katara thought.

‘People will assume things about you based of your house anyway,’ the voice said. ‘But I’m quite sure that I’ve found the perfect fit for you.’

Azula stared at the ragged, ugly hat she had to put on her head in a few short minutes. She really hoped that none of the other students had lice.

Azula forced herself to seem stern and confident, but couldn’t deny that her stomach was magic weird movements. She allowed herself a short glare towards the Gryffindor table, but she couldn’t recognize her brother between the hat-wearing crowd.

She heard her name and forced herself to walk calmly towards the chair, making sure that she wouldn’t make any sudden movements. The hat was placed on top of her head.

‘A hard worker, but not a Hufflepuff, that’s for sure,’ she heard the hat say. ‘Very smart, very smart indeed… and also very brave. But those qualities are means to an end, aren’t they? Very ambitious… and resourceful. I think you’ll be an excellent… SLYTHERIN.’

Azula released the breath she didn’t realise she was holding. She did it.
