Also see some of my new collages from my The World Without Us series in “Unnatural Histories” at the new project space of the incomparable @sashachav called Footnote located at 543 Union St, #1E Assembly Required, a collective of artists, curators and writers that has curated exhibitions in three venues within easy walking distance of each other during the month of October and during the upcoming Gowanus Open Studios weekend. Artpoetica: Union St, #2B Footnote Project Space: 543 Union St, #1E The Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse: 165 at 2nd Street NEST at Artpoetica is an interdisciplinary exhibition that emphasizes our personal spaces, both internal and external, as infinitely generative and erotic. Unnatural Histories at Footnote seeks to unearth obscured stories from the past while creating a space for new stories to be told. And Extraordinary Things at the Boathouse displays past and present objects that we use and discard, in order to challenge our perception of the familiar. A throughline connecting each of these exhibitions is the inclusion of a number of Gowanus artifacts which were originally exhibited as part of a local archiving project called The Hall of Gowanus. Initiated, in part, by one of our members, Sasha Chavchavadze, at Proteus Gowanus in 2009, over the past decade and beyond, community historians have been collecting and documenting the Gowanus neighborhood through found objects, as a way to preserve a rapidly disappearing history. Among the objects incorporated into our exhibitions are old nails, Kentile samples, oyster shells, building insulation, Prussian blue powder, architectural rubble, and a rusty 19th-century iron, fished from the canal. We re-assemble these artifacts alongside (and sometimes in conversation with) the work of the nearly 30 contemporary artists on view.
