Sometimes the struggles we go through to be ourselves can be as rewarding as the end result.
A pretty breezy one here. Only content notes are surgery mention and needle mention. No gore to be found, no sex neither. Just good ol' fashioned yearning.
This is definitely a bit of a right angle to my usual stuff. There's no horror, it's light on dialogue, but its in a very similar space to a lot of the other stuff, just a different way of going at it.
Daughter of Elysium
I scheduled the surgery without telling my parents. They wouldn’t understand.
When I came out as trans they were supportive, in perhaps the slightly awkward way that cis people tend to be when they want to be accepting of things they don’t understand. This was different though.
I sat in the waiting room of the clinic in Montevideo, lined with faux wood paneling and sleek glass. Peak 2010s architecture. An older building, but the clinics reputation spoke for itself. There was no way I was going to get this procedure done in North America. Too expensive, too niche.
Too many hoops to jump through, too. Go see this doctor, talk to this therapist. Walk with these crutches. Practice with this fake charger for a year. Bullshit, all of it. I just wanted to be me.
So I saved money where I could. I slept in the heat of the Californian summers, kept the lights off early in the winter, rode the train to work, ate cheap meals, canceled all my subscriptions, lived in a 300 sq foot apartment in Watsonville.
3 years and $100,000 Californian Dollars later, I got on a train in Santa Cruz for a 3-day journey to Uruguay.
It was late June, a few days before the solstice. This far south of the equator that meant the sun rose late and set early. It was early morning, a quarter to 7, and 5 hours ahead of California time. I was used to being awake at night, but that only made the early sunrise more disorienting.
“Lewis, Kara,” a thrill of adrenaline rushed through me as the receptionist called my name. After reciting my birthday to confirm my identity, I was taken back to preop. I changed into a surgical gown and then lay down on a gurney while a nurse ran an IV to my arm and started saline. I thought about asking what happened once the arm was removed, but I figured it wasn’t worth the explanation.
For the next 10 minutes I stared at the clock. I hadn’t brought anyone with me. This was something to do for me, by myself. No partner, no friends. I had brought a bag with one change of clothes, my passport, and my phone. I thought about calling my friend Cory, but decided against it. No sense in getting anyone worried. As far as the outside world was concerned, I was on vacation.
I guess that wasn’t too far from the truth.
At 7 sharp, a couple of orderlies came in, checked my name and date of birth, and released the brakes on the gurney. They wheeled me out into the chilled hallway, and through the double doors into the operating room.
Inside the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, and several techs were waiting. A nurse placed a mask on my face and told me to count backwards from ten. A sweet, chemical smell filled my nostrils, and the world faded out.
* * *
It wasn’t the first time I’d had surgery, so the novelty of coming up from the anesthesia surprised me. Rather than the slow, heavy feeling I’d expected, it was like waking up from a nap. Disorienting, but in a cozy way. Nothing hurt. I hadn’t expected that. Probably the painkillers were still feeding in.
I tried to open my eyes, but my lids only twitched slightly. I heard one of the nurses say “You’re awake! The doctor will be in to see you soon. Everything went well, congratulations.”
I tried to reply, but my jaw moved jerkily and I had trouble forming words. The result was a disjointed grunt emerging from my mouth. But I could tell that I had a mouth, which was good.
The nurse left. I could hear his shoes squeaking off into the distance. As they faded, the thrum of the HVAC replaced it, and an occasional mechanical whirring near me. My eyes were still closed, and for the first time I noticed the green letters in the corner of my vision. Instinctively, I tried to look at them, but they moved with my eyes. After a time I was able to make them stay put long enough to look at them.
ARLINGTON ROBOTICS SYSTEMS
BANGOR, WASHINGTON, CASCADE REPUBLIC
I managed to open my eyes after a few minutes. At first it was all much too bright, everything blown to white, but after a few seconds my vision dimmed to a comfortable level. I focused on a tiny hole in the floating ceiling above. After a moment, I managed to zoom my vision in.
I marveled for a time at the detail in the ceiling. This mass-produced object, fiberglass and paper, contained so much beauty. How many times had I stared a ceiling like this without noticing?
The doctor came in and reaffirmed that everything had gone well. She told me that rehab would start in a few days, once my new body’s systems stabilized and adjusted to neural commands. I tried to smile but couldn’t manage to get my face to move right.
The doctor chuckled and plugged a display into a port on the back of my new neck. She held it up to me, and I watched as the words “What is this for?” appeared on it. She explained that until my vocal rehab started to kick in, this display would help me communicate.
She told me to raise my arms out to my sides. I struggled with this task for a moment before finally managing to do so. For the first time I got a look at the body I’d picked out from the inside.
Gray plating, seams that slid over each other, an unapologetically mechanical body. I’d wanted that. They’re getting good at synthetic skin these days, but I wanted to distance myself from humanity. There was nothing wrong with humanity, but it never spoke to me. I’d always been somewhat apart.
* * *
I slept most of that first day. The next day they let me eat. The bioprocessor seemed to be working, the staff said, but I should keep it light, and stick to carbs rather than fat and protein until the new tract could build up a sufficient biome to support those.
Odd as it sounds, it was 36 hours post-op before I realized I hadn’t peed. The charging station that I hooked into took care of filtration and detox of what little biomass I had left. I felt suddenly elated. I actually tried to get up out of bed, and promptly tripped over my own foot, smashing my face against a wall.
The nurses rushed in, worry on their faces, but I couldn’t stop laughing, and that’s when I heard my voice.
It wasn’t like my old voice. It wasn’t cold and computerized, but warm, and rich, like an old Roland Jupiter, full of dense harmonics, singing highs, and comforting, enveloping lows.
Soon I was sitting on the floor, sobbing. My eyes didn’t water anymore, but I still went through the motions. I held my gray plastic hands to my face, and touched them to my cheeks. I felt the subtle vibrations as motors moved my eyes around. I had never felt so happy, so myself. So real.
* * *
After a week I was able to clumsily walk around the hospital room, and they moved me to the recovery house. I met a few other converts there. There was a girl named Morgan from Seattle, a guy named Case from Kansas City, a few others. I mostly kept to myself.
I started speech therapy shortly after the move. Lots of reading convoluted sentences, but also singing, reading poetry, even some play-acting. I grew to love my voice. It was obviously synthetic, but that only made it feel more like a part of me.
Motor therapy was interesting. They asked me if I played any instruments. I told them I played bass. The therapist walked to a closet and returned with a bass made entirely out of carbon fiber. I asked why they made it from that, the therapist told me I’d see shortly, and handed me the Bass.
I immediately gripped the neck with far more force than I’d intended, denting the frets and the strings. I said I understood now.
Time flew. The solstice came and went, and by August I could speak clearly, play “Highway Star,” and wash my own chassis without damaging it. I could dress myself. I could walk without tripping over my feet.
On an evening in early August, I bade farewell to my fellow converts at the recovery house, and made my way to the train station. I could have taken a cab, or the bus, but I opted to walk. It was 8 miles and took all night, but I enjoyed every moment of it. Never tiring, stopping for food to recharge myself here and there at convenience stores and night markets.
I settled into my roomette for the trip back to Santa Cruz, looking out at Montevideo Bay. I saw my reflection in the window of my train, and for the first time, really took it in, with eyes that were my own.

Donahue’s was busier than usual, the music from the jukebox competing with the rattle of balls from the pool table. It was always such on the first night of a new intern class starting residency at nearby Edenbrook Hospital.
Voices rose in excitement, others somewhat raspy from exhaustion after a long fourteen-hour shift. Drinks flowed freely under the dingy neon lights that the owner Reggie insisted added to the ambiance but was likely an attempt at keeping the electricity bill down.
After three years of this, Cassie Valentine could distinguish the newbies from the regulars. Once upon a time, she had been one of them. Finding her way in a new city and job, struggling with her self-esteem and wondering if she’d just made the worst mistake of her life.
She remembered doing tequila shots with her future roommates as they boasted of how they’d take over from the attendings that hadn’t exactly left a good first impression. Now, they were one of the senior physicians charged with molding the next generation of doctors.
Well, she was anyway, Cassie thought smugly with a side-eyed glance at Bryce Lahela, surgeon extraordinaire. He still had a year left in his general surgery residency and likely a few more years after that for specialization.
In what? He hadn’t quite figured it out yet, not that anyone could read the uncertainty in his demeanor, not with an ego the size of Alaska. Cassie was the only one who knew the man behind the carefree mask and his struggles with living up to his own expectations.
So, like any good friend, Cassie took great pleasure in rubbing her success in his face. After all, she was doing exactly what she’d set out to do when she set her sights on Edenbrook and training under Dr. Ethan Ramsey.
She was three years ahead of schedule on account of winning a coveted junior fellowship with his diagnostics team. And three months away from heading up the team.
“This place is a zoo,” Bryce groused as someone bumped into him, causing his beer to splash onto the sanded floor. “Anyway, what was I saying?”
They were standing near the bar, their attempts at securing a booth or a two-top thwarted by the sheer number of people spilling into the bar during Happy Hour.
“You were complaining about the lack of action in your sex life and maybe even shaving your head,” Cassie teased, tipping the beer bottle for a sip.
Bryce nearly choked on his drink, coughing and sputtering as it went down the wrong pipe.
“You trying to give me a heart attack?” he glared as Cassie thumped his back. “I’m fairly positive I said Tanaka wants me to focus on what kind of surgeon I want to be and that there might be a trauma fellowship at Mass Kenmore.”
“Not nearly as interesting as your love life, or lack thereof.”
Bryce ran a hand through his hair, the light-brown streaks gleaming under the light, and spread his arms with a grin. “Come on! This body gets plenty of action.”
Cassie was about to continue the smack talk when a group of rowdy residents pushed past them on their way to the bar.
“Hey!” Bryce shouted, grabbing her arm to steady her before she could lose her footing. “Watch where you’re going.”
“Whatever, bruh,” one of them sneered, his words slurring at the edges. He was built like a linebacker, flexing his beefy arms for effect. “Isn't it past your bedtime, pops?”
His friends guffawed and slapped high-fives. Grabbing their drinks, they brushed past them, their crude laughter trailing behind them.
Bryce stared daggers at their retreating backs, correctly guessing they were Ortho Bros—more muscle than sense. He knew most of the orthopedic surgeons at Edenbrook, but this group was new.
His eyes narrowed as they commandeered a dartboard, crowding out another group of interns who had been enjoying a lighthearted game.
Cassie followed his gaze, and a plan began to form. Nothing but total humiliation would do.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” she asked, nudging Bryce, a mischievous gleam in her green eyes.
“I don’t even want to know what you’re thinking,” he shuddered. “You’re scaring me with that look.”
“Come on, Lahela,” Cassie urged, her voice taking on the grim tone of a TV evangelist. “Are you going to let those meathead interns get away with disrespecting us? What’s next? You’ll let them muscle you out of your OR?”
Bryce shook his head at the dramatic declarations, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth despite himself. Cassie’s competitiveness matched his own, but he’d rather be on this side than facing off against her. She might look like an innocent blonde princess, but she fought dirty.
He squared his shoulders, took a deep breath, and shot her a sideways glance, a glint of amusement in his eyes now. “Let’s teach these Ortho Bros the pecking order at Donahue’s and Edenbrook.”
Cassie smirked as Bryce added an exaggerated swagger to his step as they marched toward the dartboards.
“Yo! Didn’t anyone teach you ‘kids’ to respect your seniors?” Bryce called out.
“Isn’t Dr. Tanaka putting you in charge of the surgical intern OR schedule, Dr. Lahela?” Cassie remarked slowly, her tone sweet as honey. “I don’t know about you, but these four could probably use a time-out before you add them to the board. What do you think? Three months?”
She grinned as the realization dawned on them—they’d just dissed the man who controlled their surgical schedules and access to the OR.
“Six months, minimum,” Bryce nodded, enjoying as their smirks faded into looks of alarm. Surgeons needed to cut. Getting benched for even a day was torture.
“Wait, you’re that Dr. Lahela?” gawked the beefy intern. “You’re the one that performed the extrapleural pneumonectomy solo as a second-year resident?”
“Focus, Bryce,” Cassie whispered sharply out of the corner of her mouth, knowing her friend’s weakness for praise. He’d always loved an audience.
Bryce threw her a frustrated look, his ego fighting with his desire to take the interns down a peg. Cassie was pleased to see that common sense prevailed.
He straightened to his full six-feet-three height and stared down his nose. “Yeah, I’m that Lahela. And if you don’t want your surgical career to go down in a flaming pile of shit after only one day, you’ll check your ‘bruhs’ at the door.”
The Ortho Bros started to apologize, their voices coming out strangled as they tripped over the words while Bryce scowled.
Cassie folded her arms across her chest, her steely-eyed glare mirroring his. She peeked at Bryce and the satisfied grin threatening to break across his lips. He met her look and winked.
Oh, yeah. Annihilation was so much more satisfying than humiliation.

More surgeon suffering pls! Maybe bea learning more about Ava’s injury?
[definitely sooo gentle & no present-day suffering lol but here u go]
//
‘you can ask.’
beatrice’s gentle, callused, careful fingers still along your back, their patterns you can’t quite decipher gone quiet. ‘i would never do that.’
her voice is so soft and so relaxed, it’s not at all a reprimand; you can’t say it aloud, not yet, but you love her. you roll over so that you can see the gentle planes of her face through the silvery-blue light from the moon and the night outside her big windows, the blinds not yet drawn. she looks at you openly, patiently, like there’s nothing she wants to take from you; everything she wants to give. you know — in your heart and through your friends and your family and your therapist telling you over and over again — that you have so much to offer: you’re beautiful and funny and very smart, and you love the world more than anyone you know. you also know that beatrice is sometimes less sure of herself than she seems: she clams up every time her parents call, unable to tell them to, unequivocally if it was up to you, fuck off; she loves to be lazy and sleep in and wants no one to know; she still is in the habit of downplaying accomplishments, anything from a surgery she mastered (impressive in that you know how hard it is) to a new route she climbed at the gym (you have no idea but lilith was jealous and you can imagine it’s hot); she’s a horrible cook.
‘i know,’ you say, and you do. you let a finger drift down the bridge of her nose, count her freckles, feel the chapped bow of her lips beneath your thumb. she has a scar, small, through her left brow, and you trace it. ‘what’s this from?’
she smiles, always so quick to understand, always so generous. it makes you feel like you could light up the entire world sometimes. ‘i was five; my brothers were trying to teach me how to rollerblade.’
you think about it: beatrice’s gap-toothed grin and the delightfully terrible bob haircut she had for so much of her early childhood, the photos making you laugh when, unprompted, lilith showed you a few weeks ago when you’d all had dinner at a good oyster place near bea’s house. ‘can you rollerblade now?’
‘no, it frightened me. i never learned.’
‘putting that on the short list of things that scare you. good to know.’
she holds up her right arm so you can see the small scar on her elbow, the skin darker than before. ‘at university, i was drunk and my crush dared me to climb a tree.’
you can’t help the laugh it pulls out of you. ‘oh my.’
she nods. ‘yes, quite. needless to say, amelia and i went our separate ways fairly soon after.’
‘well, her loss. i’d have paid to see you fall out of a tree.’
‘i didn’t fall,’ she says. ‘i scraped my elbow on the way up, but i did continue.’
‘of course you did.’
she shrugs. you trace the scars across her chest, ones you love.
‘camila told me you tried to go back to classes a week after your surgery. like, the day after you got your drains out.’
bea laughs. ‘yes, and promptly fell fast asleep about three minutes in.’
‘front row?’
‘well, the second.’
‘knew it.’
‘i can keep going, if you like. i have a good story about a scraped knee during field hockey at boarding school.’
‘homoerotic, i hope.’
she rolls her eyes, but based on her silence you know you’re right.
she lets you sit in it, easily, and her house is beautiful and warm and, you’re beginning to think — to hope — it might be full of your things one day, too. it’s easier to be brave here, but your words, the worst of them, still get stuck in your throat. ‘well, what do my scars tell you?’
she weighs it. ‘you know i’m more interested in cardio.’
‘you’re the smartest person i’ve ever met.’
‘well, you favor your left hand when you’re practicing sutures, and i know your left foot gets numb often. you have trouble with temperature regulation and walking long distances, but an easier time standing for the most part; your neck aches, i think all the time.’ she pauses. ‘your handwriting is abysmal, although i suspect that has nothing to do with your injuries.’
you’re about to start crying, but she makes things lighter, even now.
‘all i care about, ava,’ she says, soft and sure, a hand tangled in your hair and then gentle on your cheek, ‘is that you get the care you need, that you tell someone — me or anyone else who can help. and you can tell me whatever you like, if ever you feel ready.’
‘i can’t — i want to.’
she kisses your forehead. ‘like i said. it’ll always be up to you. i’m here.’
you take a deep breath. ‘my mom had a garden,’ you say. ‘she died, uh —‘ you get a little caught, stuck on the way her eyes looked when she wasn’t alive anymore, when you couldn’t move, when you were stuck for so long, screaming and so, so scared — ‘she grew all kinds of vegetables.’ your voice shakes but beatrice only nods. ‘and flowers. we were going to —‘ you sniffle and beatrice just wipes your tears — ‘i think she wanted to keep bees. i don’t even know if that was possible; we had a little yard. but everything grew.’
‘that sounds wonderful.’
‘it was, even though i hated eating my vegetables.’
beatrice laughs softly, admonishing in a way that’s harmless, fond. ‘you’ve grown so much since then.’
‘hey, i’ll have you know just today i ate, like, seven bites of a salad.’
‘very impressive.’
‘can i — not right now, because i think i’ll just cry too much, but — can i tell you more about her? i wish you could’ve met her.’ i wish i could remember her more; i can’t forget.
‘i would love that. and, if she was anything like you, i’m sure she would’ve lit up an entire room. it would’ve been an honor.’
‘bea, i really don’t want to cry again,’ you whine.
‘you should know,’ she tells you, a little firm, so there’s no argument. ‘she would be so proud of you. i know it; who wouldn’t be?’
‘that’s —‘ you bury your face in her neck, just for a moment, soft and warm and safe.
‘would you like to plant a garden?’
‘in my tiny ass apartment?’
‘no,’ she says, and you can’t see her but you can practically feel her rolling her eyes. ‘here. i have the whole back yard and, frankly, no real interest in a lawn.’
‘i —‘ you back up so you can look at her, and her eyes are clear. ‘really?’
‘of course. i’m actually quite interested in self-sustaining agriculture, and the pacific northwest has great growing conditions for so much wonderful flora and fauna.’
‘wow. okay, but — it’s your house.’
she pauses. ‘ava.’
‘i just — you’re sure?’
‘i would really enjoy it, if you’d like. also, my friend marco, from the climbing gym, runs the community garden in their neighborhood and has been pestering me to meet you.’
‘you talk about me?’
‘of course.’
‘well, if marco will do all the heavy lifting, and preferably both of you not have shirts on, i’m so in.’
‘it’s february.’
you shrug. ‘you’re tough.’
beatrice laughs, and you sink into it, delight in it. you could light up the whole world, ava, she told you after two glasses of wine and half an edible the other night, entirely serious, crammed onto the small couch in your small apartment, your life expanding far beyond, past any walls you knew.
‘next weekend, when we’re both off,’ she says, ‘we can go to the nursery nearby and get started.’
‘you’re —‘ the love of my life sits right on the tip of your tongue, but you kiss her instead. ‘thank you.’
‘thank you for telling me about your garden, and your mother.’
all you can do is nod, and then hold her after she turns over and falls asleep.

Vampires could be time capsules of what people looked like at various points in history and I know live action vampire media cannot be bothered, but books and cartoons have no excuse.
Vampire Diaries does not pride itself on its efforts at historical accuracy (like putting horses in Virginia ten centuries ago) and I believe I’ve complained about this before. But give TVD a budget and a creative team like the earlier seasons of GOT and then when you tell me your cast has thousand-year-old Viking vampires, you can prove it.
Randomly looked up what Alexander the Great looked like at 5:30am and part of the description was that he was probably around 5ft tall. But you think of him and you probably picture some six-foot-two Adonis. People were just shorter back then.
Give a human immortality and though most vampire media makes them maybe 200-500 years old, because most vampire media likes to focus on how they were interwoven into the last few centuries of our history, humans 500 years ago still looked different!
It would be such a small thing, and the whole point of vampires interacting with humans is the whole ‘blending into society’ aspect, invisible predators, so they’d have grown used to the fashion and customs of the era, but while you can get a haircut, you can’t stroll up to a plastic surgeon’s office.
Things like, vampires with rare genes that haven’t been seen in centuries, because it’s recessive and died out. Vampires who still talk with the accent or language they grew up with, or can call it back when they want to, even though it’s been a dead language for generations. Or a language that was never written down, oral traditions that only this one person remembers.
Dances that have been lost to history, craftmaking, survival skills, herbal knowledge.
I explored some of this very, very briefly with my vampires, because mine reach 700, 800, 900 years old easy, and I really want to give it due justice.
Usual vampires are some variety of either recent American, or some bougie French or English gentleman who can only comment on the Victorian era. I didn't like Castlevania: Nocturne very much, the hero team was just comparatively less compelling, but I adored the diversity of the vampire species and kept watching specifically to see what would happen with Olrox.
Like, there is enough vampire romance media out there about how this immortal 17-year-old cannot control his animalistic nature even with 200 years of practice.
I want a story about some anthropologist with a hyper fixation on a culture that they only know exists through anecdotes from the other societies that destroyed it, only for a thousand-year-old vampire to go “ya I still remember where my house stood, here I’ll show you.” (and I do have this near exact scenario already planned for my book)
“Oh, Atlantis? Yeah, shame about that one. This one time I was there…”
Atlantean vampires would be so cool.
Like, Interview With the Vampire, but less…. Less.

“Ok, so Rick, Daryl, Maggie, Glenn, Michonne, very pretty name by the way, and Carol. I think I’ve got it,” I said, pointing to each person as I said their name so I could associate names to faces. I followed the group up the steps and out into the sunshine. I took off my glasses and blew some dust off of the inside.
A teenage boy was sitting outside in the grass. He couldn’t have been older than 14, maybe 15, and he was holding an infant. They couldn’t have been more than 6 months old. I had to push the thoughts out of my head of what the mother must have gone through birthing a baby during the literal apocalypse.
“Carl, this is Vector,” Rick said to the boy. I assumed this was his son. I squatted down to Carl’s level. Carol said some things to Rick that I couldn’t make out before walking off.
“So you cut off Aaron’s foot?” he asked me. I chuckled a little and nodded.
“She saved Aaron’s life, and we can’t thank her enough for that,” Rick corrected.
“I’m a trauma surgeon. Probably the best kind of doctor to have around in a situation like this. It was far from my first amputation,” I told him, “and who is this little one?”
“This is my sister, Judith,” he replied. I cocked my head and admired the little baby in his arms. She just stared at me, wide-eyed, before giggling and waving her hands around at who knows what. ”Or Lil’ Ass Kicker, if you’re asking Daryl.”
“Well, she is adorable.” I stood back up and looked over at Rick, holding a hand up over my eyes to block out the sun. “So Rick, you seem like an authority figure in this place. Where do you want me at?”
“Vector, you’re gonna be sharing that house over there with Daryl,” Rick said, pointing to a house that was just out of my line of sight, “there’s plenty of space for two people.” I felt my heart stop for a moment, and my eyes grew wide. I felt my stomach churn at the thought of sharing a space alone with a man I’d barely met. I rubbed my rope scars.
“You want me where?”
“She’s goin’ where?” Daryl asked. The irritation in his voice was heavy. I could only see his shape in my peripheral, but I could feel the distaste for me radiating off of him. I thought I was going to choke on it.
“Daryl, it makes sense to keep her near the infirmary.” Rick retorted.
“I don’t know, is there like, someone who’s…not a man…that I can stay with?” I asked, then immediately recanted my statement, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be picky. Y’all were gracious enough to let me in, and I can’t thank you enough for that.” I looked over at Daryl, “we’ll make it work.”
“I dunno who 'we' is, but I ain’t the one,” he said. He slung his crossbow over his shoulder and sauntered away. I watched as he dragged his feet across the ground back to his, well now “our” house.
“He’s really not so bad once you get to know him,” Rick assured. I gave him a hesitant face.
“Are you sure? He seems, I don’t wanna be mean, but a little more than just rough around the edges. Will I be, umm,” I swallowed hard, “safe in there? Y’know, since I’m “tiny.””
“As long as you don’t swing first,” Glenn replied.
“Hey Maggie, you don’t, uh, happen to have a hair tie, do you? I had fashioned one out of gauze and a rubber band, but it broke.”
“Rosita might,” she said, patting me on the shoulder, “c’mon, Glenn and I can show you around and introduce you to everyone.” I gave a small smile and a nod. Her and Glenn started off, and I looked up at the sky and took in a deep breath of fresh air. My brothers and my dad crossed my mind.
“I wish you guys could see this,” I whispered, following after the two of them.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
After introductions to everyone, Glenn and Maggie took me over to the infirmary, where I stored the medical supplies I’d been carrying. After giving the remaining astronaut food to Rick to store in case of an emergency or a long journey and emptying it of gauze, bandages, disinfectant, pills, and small medical tools, my pack was much lighter. I still had yet to get my weapons back.
“So is Rick right?” I asked, following the two of them back outside, “about what he said about Daryl? I just get the vibe that he doesn’t like me, and I’ve hardly talked to the man.”
“Daryl’s very…” Maggie turned to Glenn before looking back at me, “protective of the people he cares about. You’re a fresh face. Don’t take anything too personally. And eventually, he’ll really see you as one of us. You’ll be fine.” She turned to look at the house I’d be staying and then back at me. “I’ll go in with you if that would make you more comfortable.” I swallowed and nodded.
She gave Glenn a quick kiss & he walked away before we headed over and up the tiny steps to the front door. It was a cute little grey house with large windows and flowers in the front that I was surprised weren’t dead. I figured gardening wouldn’t be at the top of anyone’s priority list in a time like this. Maggie knocked on the door and waited a few seconds before letting herself in.
“It’s Maggie and Vector!” she called out, letting me past her and closing the door behind us. No response. I unzipped my black combat boots and kicked them off. I let out a sigh of relief as my feet touched the floor, gently lifting each of my feet and pulling my socks off. The floor was ice cold under my feet.
“I’ve never been so excited to be barefoot. You forget about the little things, like being able to walk around without shoes on,” I said. I took a look around at what was in front of me. There was a set of stairs straight ahead, the kitchen off to the right with a small island in it, and a living area to the left with a couch, coffee table, and a chair. To the right of the stairs was a door, which I guessed was either a bathroom or a basement door.
“Well I bet you’re even more excited to get clean,” she said to me, “if this layout is anything like mine, which it looks like it is, I can show you where everything is at.”
“Hell yeah, let’s go,” I replied, following her over to and up the stairs. It felt strange to be walking around without my boots on. Previously, the only times I’d even taken them off were to quickly wash off when I’d find a creek, but that wasn’t very often. She led me to a room on the left and gently pressed the door open. Inside, there was a bed and a dresser with a mirror above it.
“This one’s you,” she told me, “oh, gimme your clothes & I’ll make sure they get washed.” I set my backpack down on the bed and fished my remaining clothes out.
“I would’ve been more than happy with just a chair cushion on the floor in a corner,” I beamed, handing my clothes over to her. I felt bad because they absolutely reeked, but she handled them as if there was no issue. Probably to not make me feel bad, which I appreciated. I left my bag on the bed and followed her back out to a door across the hall.
“This one’s the bathroom, and I'm guessing Daryl’s room is around the corner. Go ahead and enjoy a shower and I’ll see if any of us gals have some clothes you can borrow while yours get cleaned,” she said. I stepped into the small bathroom and turned to her.
“Maggie, I—“ I could hardly get my words out, “thank you for being so nice to me. And taking my clothes, showing me around. And letting me in in the first place. I promise I’ll be a productive member of the community here. I really can’t thank y’all enough.” I didn’t even think, I just grabbed her and gave her a giant hug. I don’t know what compelled me to do it. Maybe it was my lack of genuine human contact up to this point or being overwhelmed with the joy of finding a home. She slipped one arm out and hugged me back.
“I’m so sorry,” I said as I released her, “I should’ve asked you first.”
“You’re alright. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you first get here. Don’t worry about it. And you’re welcome,” Maggie replied, “I’ll have the clothes in your room before you’re done.” We nodded to each other before she turned around and headed down and out the front door.
I quickly undressed and left my clothes in a pile that I could easily grab when I was done. I draped a towel across the back of the toilet and did my best to get the water to the right temperature. I almost cried when I first stepped underneath it. The amount of dirt that immediately ran off of me was abhorrent. I probably shampooed my hair 5 times, the product stinging the small wound on the back of my head. But I didn’t care. I was just happy to have clean hair. I was definitely a bit aggressive with the soap.
“Fuck,” I said to myself, turning towards the water and sticking my face under it, “I’ve never been so happy to get soap in my eyes.”
After cleaning every crack and crevice of my body multiple times, I stepped out and grabbed a towel, drying my face first and wrapping myself in it. It felt so soft, like it was my first time touching a bath towel. I took a moment to soak everything in before leaving the bathroom.
“Daryl?” I called out, poking my head out the door ever so slightly. When I didn’t hear a response or any sound of movement, I scuttled across the hallway to my room and quickly shut the door. Once I was in, I saw the clothes that Maggie had set out for me. There was a pair of black denim shorts, a black sports bra, some socks, and a hair tie. I sat down on the edge of the bed, and unable to contain myself anymore, I started sobbing. I covered my mouth with both hands to try to stifle the sounds.
My mom, my dad, Preston, Jay, Eli…they would never get to see Alexandria. I would never get to see their smiling faces, hear their laughs, experience their joy. There wouldn’t be any more reunions when they came home from deployment, no late-night trips to the grocery store, no more interrogations about boys, no father-daughter deep talks when neither of us could sleep. I couldn’t believe that out of everyone in my family, I was the one who made it out and alive. Not the Navy SEALs…me.
Being a surgeon who treated survivors of mass shootings, I was well-educated on survivor’s guilt, but damn, nothing prepares you for having to experience it yourself.
I took a few minutes to cry before drying myself off and throwing on the clothes Maggie left for me. I tied my wet hair up into a bun and tossed my towel on the bed. I took my glasses off and set them on the dresser before collapsing on the bed next to my backpack. I rolled onto my side and continued to cry. It was all I could do. I finally felt safe enough to grieve.
Eventually, sleep came, and with it came the nightmares. But they were different this time.

Viktor Drago x Balboa!Daughter imagine part 2 preview
Time passed and you watched a fight Viktor was in,the interview that followed making you shiver. They talked about his loss which Viktor corrected as a disqualification, the Russian declaring a challenge to Adonis yet again. Max Kellerman asked him about his involvement with you,Viktor only answering by saying that there was nothing to tell and he was focused on his wins. You sighed as you turned the TV off, clearing up your coffee table.
Days later you had finished up your last shift of the week at the hospital, glad to be helping out in the ED as they were short staffed. You were a general surgeon, enjoying the days in the OR but there was something about the chaos in the ED helped you forget about the chaos of your own life. People had finally stopped asking about your involvement with Viktor, now resorting to whispering when they thought you couldn't hear.
You had various candles lit around your apartment,a glass of wine on your coffee table. You frowned at the multiple nail polish colors you had set out, your self care routine interrupted by a knock at your door.
"Coming!"You yelled, sighing as you wondered who could possibly be at your door at this time of night.
You shivered as you pulled the door open, gasping when you looked up to find the large man standing at your door. He waved,a shy look on his face.
"Viktor."You whispered, chewing on your lip nervously. "What are you doing here?"
"I need you."He said, hands in his pockets. "I have no one."
"What happened? Are you okay?"You neared him, looking him over quickly. You could tell he had something heavy weighing on his mind, feeling for the large man who was clearly torn.
"Can we talk?"He asked, smiling when you looked at him with concern.
"Yeah."You nodded, opening the door wider for the large man to step through. "Come in."
The large man made your small home feel even tinier, his eyes looking around the dark room that was mostly lit by the candles.
"I interrupt?"He asked, following you to your living room.
"No,just having a little self care night."You shrugged, turning to him.
"Self care?"He parroted, his brows furrowed in confusion.
"Yeah, helps me relax."You gestured to the masks you had used and the lotions you used for a self foot rub after you finished doing your nails.
He nodded, walking up to a picture on one of your shelves. It was a picture of you with your dad in the ring at Mickys gym,you were only about 4 when your mother took the picture of you "training" with your father.
"Very cute."Viktor pointed, turning to you with a smile
Wanted to give you guys a sneak preview on the part 2,I’m so glad you guys liked part 1. Part 2 will be done soon.

Chapter 6 - The Wolf is Indecisive
Freshly updated tags and overall summary, woohoo! CHAPTER 1
Trafalgar Law has a strict rule against devil fruit users. With some help from Nico Robin, you persuade him to allow you, a Mink who ate a human-human fruit, onto his submarine. The dynamic with the Heart's captain should have ended in a one night stand, but develops into a friendship with benefits. When Law begins to catch feelings, one of you must change or let the romantic potential go.
Minors DNI
CW's: Sex toys, Rough sex, Auralism, Penguin/Reader oral sex implied, Nico Robin/Reader implied, Law/Bepo implied
Law lay beside you, dwarfing you with his long, slender body. Tempted, you slowly move your hand from Law’s chest, down his abs, then slip passed the hem of his pants, savoring his happy trail’s texture. You grip the dildo, rubbing it like you would any other penis, although with the intention of shifting its base. A moan escapes him, tickling your lips. He grew louder the more you messed with it, forcing him to grab your wrist to make you stop.
“Bad dog,” Law grins his signature, intimidating smile. “You want me to punish you? I remember you like that.”
“Have you ever penetrated?” you blurt, realizing it may not have been the best timing. You laugh away your awkwardness, blushing more from embarrassment. “I-I’m sorry. I do like it when you take things out on me,” you play it off with a tease, the grin still plastered on your face. Law snickered.
“Well, that was a valid question. To tell you the truth, I haven’t done more than fingering or oral. Sure, I had power over anyone who would insult me, but I never wanted to deal with that stress nor hurt anyone. My gender is very personal to me, people don’t need to know when I pass flawlessly.”
You glance down, your hand casually plays with the head of the dildo, feeling the smooth silicone. “You… are a surgeon. So…” you felt rude asking, so it was difficult to form the words.
He understood. “I like it the way it is.”
“Oh, okay,” you’re caught by surprise as Law cups your face and kisses you roughly. With tenderness, he lifts himself up and gets on top of you again.
“Do you want it tonight?” he whispers in your right wolf ear. He takes the time to bite the edge of it, making you shiver. You lean towards him, nuzzling your face into his shoulder, arms around him, taking in his scent.
“I’d love to,” you murmur near his ear. His body becomes rigid for a moment, then he shifts to press his forehead against yours. You smile at him, enjoying seeing his blush and the emotions swirling in his usually enigmatic eyes. He seemed to be losing his confidence. “You’re okay,” you whisper, “I can take whatever you give me,” you give him a sly smirk, fluttering your eyelashes, “Take your time…”
Law sits up. He takes the hem of your pajamas and lifts the fabric over your head with your help. He grins, seeing as you had no bra to begin with. He touches one with a light slap, making you jolt and whimper, then stands to pull down your pants and underwear in one fell swoop. You laugh, appreciating his eagerness.
Once you were naked his right hand was squeezing your breast and the other cupping your sex. You blush deeply, feeling that sense of vulnerability like before. This objectification as his eyes ravage your body, observing the wide splashes of peach all over your pretty skin. You begin to pant from the excitement, watching him slowly lift his own shirt. You lift your feet to run along his abs, making him let out a guttural laugh. He liked the way you seemed to obsess with his tattoos.
A wide grin greeted you once he flung his shirt to the side. He takes your ankles in his hands and bites the sole of your right foot, his other thumb rubbing into the left. He relished in your ticklish giggling and protests.  Placing your feet back on his chest he lets you explore. The feel of his muscles rippling made you wetter and wetter, craving him to come closer. You slip your legs passed his waist and force him forward. He looked surprised at first, but he recovered and chuckled at your antics, placing his hands on the hem of his jeans where your feet were already trying to push them down.
The dildo was freed from the fabric, it bounced slightly still with his breathing. It was realistic and silky, complete with a wrinkle texture to mimic foreskin and veins. The tip was a bright reddish pink, the gradient of color was a tad lighter than his base skin tone, but darker than his white patches. He moved in closer to press into your vulva, teasing your entrance with the tip to lubricate it with your fluids. You flinch when he did this, groaning lightly at the sensation.
“You’re already so wet,” he growled playfully. “I don’t think I’ll need any lube, huh?” In response, your tail began to wag involuntarily between both your legs. He glanced down, smiling with a raised eyebrow as you wriggled. He grabbed your hips and pushed himself in, smirking broadly at your stopping and covering your crimson face. He hesitated as the dildo vanished halfway in, glancing up to watch you beg him with your body language. You rut your hips, push yourself lower and make the dildo push a bit deeper. You grunt in complaint, feeling it stretch you, but not quite enough.
Law pulled you in, experimentally pushing further until he felt a distinctive wall. You stretched out your arms above you, moaning softly against your upper arm. You peak at him, your face as red as his. He seemed mesmerized by your display, pushing the dildo in in small pumps to hit the wall, making a few gruff sounds escape loud enough to ring in his ears. “Are you alright?” he asked softly, a serious expression crossing his face.
“More than good,” you groan, stretching your legs to the side, amused but unfazed by his unnecessary concern. “Hit me fast and hard, doctor.”
At your words he grew redder, his laugh shook you and the bed. “Alright, little wolf,” he said with some conviction. He began rocking his hips, pulling the dildo out half way, then hitting the wall at different intensities, examining your reactions. He huffed slightly, the egg holding the dildo inside him moved a tad, pressing his gspot, and his dick throbbed, begging him to turn the button on to start the dildo’s vibe. He worried it would overwhelm him before he could satisfy you, so he kept focused. His own walls were slick, he felt his body radiate heat as his dopamine rush hit a new high.
He took both your hands in his, bottoming out inside you from the new angle, leaning in to look at your flushed face closely. As he pumped with more confidence, he kissed your bright lips, introducing his tongue once you reciprocated. You squeeze his hands tightly, squeezing your eyes closed as his tongue tries to fuck your throat. Saliva ran down your chin, you felt tears prickle in your eyes; as his tongue messed with you the more confident he grew. He wanted the moans to escape louder, forgetting about the others hearing. After all, you were his, he’d make a point to let anyone interested know.
He was at a full, steady pace now. You felt your insides tighten as the dildo’s blunt head rolled across your g-spot and hit your cervix again and again with intent. He lets one of your hands go and shows you a small remote. You hadn’t noticed it earlier, you gaze at it through half lidded eyes, panting from his ministrations. You jolt at the sound of vibration, he had started the egg first. He lifts his head to hiss, all you could see was his neck for a moment. He looked down and pressed his forehead with yours, panting more feverishly now. It was so hot.
The sound of more vibrating. Law opened his mouth from the sensation, making you grin. He quickly changed the setting to a less harsh flicker against his dick. He began to hump again, chasing more pleasure by tightening his legs and rubbing into the vibe’s hole. Finally, the last button made the dildo’s head itself vibrate. Your eyes widen at the sudden rippling inside you, you arch your back and whine loudly as he thrust, feeling your impending climax speed up significantly.
“Ah!! La-Law!” you tightening your legs around his as he pumped even faster, chasing his own climax. He held your hips firmly now, practically bruising the skin, determined to hit as hard as he could.
“Omi…” he whispered at first, gritting his teeth, “Y/N…!” he groaned loudly this time, losing all care as he moved more aggressively due to your walls clenching.
Your hands reached up and scratched along his heart tattooed shoulders as you came. “F-Fuck! Too much!” tears flowing down your cheeks. Now that you’d squirted over his belly and thighs, it was so much more slippery and sensitive inside. He kept going, ramming you harshly as he finished until he came as well, cum dripping from his cunt, though the egg stopping the full fluid from spilling out. He stopped the vibrations then finally pulled out, the dildo’s head dripped with your fluids. He blushed a bit at the sight, surprised by just how aroused you were. “Hmm… remind me to put a towel down next time,” he chuckled.
You remained spent with your arms to your sides, panting to regain your regular breathing. Law lowered himself above you again, carefully planting some open mouth kisses along your cheek, also trying to regain his breathing. You stare at him tiredly, surprised he was giving you such romantic affection. You roll your head away from him, giving him room to kiss your neck. A few moments pass, you focus on the sound of his lips on your skin. Eventually, you felt a sharp sucking on your neck. You whine, gently pushing Law away, but he continued. As quickly as it started, he was kissing your cheek again. Your right hand rises to entangle in his hair, your eyes closing as he tenderly claimed your skin, occasionally going back to leave the bruise even darker.
Eventually, Law stood and lifted you bridal style. You silently watch him, holding your hand over the hickey he left you. He brings you up to kiss you firmly, bruising your lips just a bit more. You reach up to scratch along his neck, allowing yourself to melt into his affection. You didn’t know why he was doing this, nor if it mattered. You felt him move, heading for the restroom to bathe with you.
After a few minutes, you were leaning against him in his bathtub, sleepily allowing him to cuddle you tenderly, wash you, explore you with his hands to pull sounds from your throat. At one point you turn your head to meet his. Surprisingly, he was at the brink of tears, his golden eyes dark. His arms curled around you, embracing you like a stuffed toy, and buried his somber face into your neck. You had a feeling you knew what had happened, but neither of you formed words the rest of the night.
The next morning, you sat nervously on Law’s bed after relieving yourself, glancing at his sleeping form. You were anxious of leaving the room to face your friends’ questions. Law had insisted you stayed, his arms consistently snaking around you after you’d both cleaned up. He squeezed your rolls, your arms, your tail and your ears. He doted on you; he was surprisingly clingy. Even now, he stretched sleepily, searching for you. You smile softly and squeeze his hand in yours. You knew what he was feeling now, there wasn't much room for doubt, but sex wasn’t an answer to you. You wanted his words, too. For now, you would be patient.
You were particularly exhausted today. All night Law had tossed and turned. His expression would twist in fear as he dreamt. As though on cue, he takes his hand away from yours and shields his head and whimpers. Sighing, you lie beside him, gently pat his arm to let him know you aren’t a threat, then wrap your arms around him. Without waking, he slowly calmed thanks to your warmth. You cant help but admire his serene face, planting a feather light kiss on his lips.
“This would be… so unhealthy,” you muse, nuzzling into his chest. Your heart leapt into your throat as he stirred awake, yawning, then looking down at you through bleary eyes, raising a hand to pet your wolf ear back against your hair. Your heart slowed, a smile pulls at the corner of your mouth which he returned.
“Keep sleeping, Omi-ya…,” despite his gravelly voice, it felt like a command.
“Law…” you hesitated, chewing your tongue.
Law pecked your lips, distracting you from your thoughts. “I’m sure they heard all that,” he huskily chuckled into your lips, “but our guests probably didn’t—save for the Straw Hats. They don’t need any more information. From now on, sleep with me,” he purred, pressing his forehead against yours. “Don’t worry about the women’s quarters. Stay with me…,” you still weren’t sure if it was your anxiety or if he truly sought to leave no room for argument.
As much as you loved him and as much as you wanted to follow his order, you gingerly shake your head side to side; “N-No, Law.” Squeezing your eyes shut, you expect to be yelled at as your father would have, but there was no response. Law slowly let you go and got up from the bed. Fluttering your eyes open, you follow his chiseled form walk across to the bathroom. Inside you felt your guts tighten, the silence actually felt worse… At least if he yelled you would know how he felt.
Once out, he walked over to you as he threw his shirt on. “Are you going to get ready? I can handle some of the damages before you get up,” he offered calmly, not making eye contact. After a small pause, his expression sobers further, “We’re… about a week off from Wano,” he mumbled. “I apologize for being so… controlling. I don’t want to make you feel forced to be around me.” You silently watch him finish zipping his pants up, grab his hat from the rack beside the door. Taking Kikoku into his right hand, he stepped out without so much as saying good bye.
Frowning, you ready yourself as well. You wanted nothing more on earth than to be around him, to be his lover, but he was being too insistent that your view of relationships wasn’t what he wanted. No beauty on earth could sway you to choose someone over your own morals, even if he was very tempting- you could imagine how he would act in full control during sex, if he let his sadistic side take hold; you wonder if he might even submit to you if you flashed your confidence. How maybe, just maybe, you could cradle him when he finally burst and shared all his secrets with you, some especially for you and only for you. Awkwardly, you test your steps as you dressed, making sure you weren’t too wobbly. It would be a long day.
Fuck, too much! The muffled words echoed.  Cries like honey, the sound that described a mouth agape and tears flowing, nails digging into flesh and legs quivering. The voice of an angel moaned, practically screamed. What would it be like to be the name that dropped from their soft lips, to caress their skin, to—
Distracted by the tightness in his boiler suit’s crotch, Penguin ultimately runs head first into Law, who is taken aback as he too was busy thinking about that person. Dumbfounded, Penguin looked up at Law, staggered backwards and stood at attention. “G-Good morning, ‘Cap!”
“Good morning, Penguin,” Law’s tone is neutral, his eyes scan Penguin with a certain scrutiny that made Penguin’s neck start to heat up. Clicking his tongue, Law walks passed him, seeing as he made no noise complaints.
“C-Captain!” Penguin called, “Er, the others already had breakfast. We … saved you and Y/N some food and coffee.”
Law paused, not facing him, then murmured a “thank you” as he continued down the hall. He hadn’t quite taken it in in the heat of the moment, but the crew knew now. This now established a relationship between you and him; it wasn’t a real relationship, but it certainly was, officially, a relation. He headed for the lounge, where most of the crew spent time during the day socializing when there was little to do. Then he would start his proper morning routine.
“Torao!” Franky walked out into the hall, stopping Law before he reached the lounge. “My man, my man! I’ll be honest, I sleep like a log, but your pals let me know what’s up.” He pat Law’s whole arm with his large robotic hand, making him side step slightly.
Law liked Franky quite a bit. He was a damn cyborg, for fucks sake, but he was still a Straw Hat. “I was about to go tell those fools to shut the hell up,” Law glared up at him. “Or maybe you want to tell them making Y/N-ya uncomfortable by bringing this all up has consequences. I’ll have their heads hung in the boiler room so they can sweat off their regrets.”
“You do sound like Robin,” Franky laughed loudly, “SUPER scary! So, I guess you told them how you felt?” Law averted his eyes, pouting slightly, eyebrows knit tight. “As expected, you would be wishy-washy about it, Torao” Franky chuckled. “How about we get breakfast? Or are you going to spend time with your partner?”
Law flushed notably. “Fine, why not? But first, I need to speak with the crew.”
“You may as well just inform Pen’,” Franky pointed out. “You don’t want the samurai to know, do you?”
“Shit, fine.” Law began following the cyborg towards the galley. Penguin was no longer in the hall, having gone to attend to duties to keep his mind off… things. Law activated his ability, detecting Penguin’s location with Scan. Luckily, he hadn’t strayed too far, he was sweeping the restrooms. As they passed the men’s restroom, Law called for him, continuing on without waiting.
Once they arrived he sat with Franky at a spacious four person table. Penguin soon arrived and Law gestured for him to sit, which Penguin nervously followed. He wasn’t sure how to spend time with Law without Shachi or Bepo after all that happened; it felt strange and he was still jealous. To make things worse, what he had heard only fueled his envy. There was no one more deserving of love than Law, in his mind, but…
“Penguin,” Law cut off his thoughts, “How… are you?”
“Fine, Captain.” Penguin replied, feigning a peppy demeanor. He and Franky acknowledged one another as well. “So, do you need me to grab you some breakfast, Cap’?”
“I just need you to inform the others what happens if they make Y/N-ya uncomfortable,” Law held his intertwined fingers in front of his eyes, hat shrouding them in the dim lighting.
Penguin shivered when Law casually recounted his plan for punishment. He nodded quickly and stood to stand at attention. “Aye, Captain.” He turned away toward the entrance.
“Hey, Pen’,” Law’s voice stopped him in his tracks. “Go see what Y/N-ya is doing when you’re done.”
Penguin shuffled on his feet nervously, not looking back. “Aye,” he trekked on, disappearing down the hall.
Franky looked at Law, eyebrows raised. “What was all that about?” Despite his reluctance, Law decided to entertain his question and began to vent, slowly but surely.
You sat on a chair in the greenroom. You had snatched a snack for breakfast: a biscuit the crew left for you, your coffee mug sat atop a glass table in front of you. In one hand you held the biscuit with a napkin, the other flipped thru the pages of a book in your lap. You felt that dull ache in your belly from last night, the one that chastised you for having rough sex, but you were busy distracting yourself from thoughts of who the sex was with and how uncomfortable the tension between you was this morning.
“…I don’t want to make you feel forced to be around me.”
Was that manipulative? There they were again, the thoughts you were trying to avoid. “Ugh!” You set the book on the table and rip a big chunk out of your biscuit in frustration. Patience, you tell yourself, this is almost over. If he doesn’t change his mind so be it. You were an independent person, entirely whole without him. Taking in a deep breath, you finish your biscuit and wipe your eyes with the clean side of the napkin, tears threatening to fall down your cheeks.
“Y/N?” came a call from the entrance to the greenroom. It was Penguin. You call him, letting him know you’re there and are soon met with Law’s cute, blushing friend standing before you awkwardly. “Uhm, the captain was looking for you,” he said, leaning a hand on the table, smiling at you sheepishly before looking around at the flowers.
“Who takes care of these flowers?” You ask, making no effort to hide your disinterest in talking about Law.
“Huh?” Penguin seems surprised, but he stands straight and responds, “Several members of the crew have their own sections of the garden they care for. I take care of one of the most important factors, though: I keep track of the growth of the vegetables we use in our kitchen.”
“You’re so useful, I’m proud of you,” you smile at him with your chin resting on your palm. “You‘re tasked with a lot of important things, aren’t you?”
Penguin’s cheeks lit up. “Y-Yeah, sure. I train new recruits, I keep track of everyone’s schedules and things needing attention… Bepo’s the first mate & navigator, but I’m basically co-captain,” he grinned, hands on his hips, clearly taking pride in himself.
Giggling, you take a sip of your coffee. “Do you want to sit with me?”
“I do, but… I have to report back to Cap’,” Penguin scratched the back of his neck. “Not to pry, but… did you two argue?”
“No,” the answer was honest, but you didn’t sound confident. “We had sex and he’s acting like he’s smitten with me. He ordered me to stay with him and behaved like a wet kitten when I refused.”
Penguin cleared his throat, trying to remain composed; the casual way you spoke of these things caught him of guard. “So, he asked you to join us?”
“He asked me to sleep in his room every night for the rest of the trip, that’s all,” you take a much longer swig of your coffee, expressing disappointment it was almost gone when you glanced inside the cup.
You raise your head towards the Slap caused by Penguin’s palm meeting his face. “I see… He refuses to fully commit, huh.”
“That,” you shrug, “And the fact we’re incompatible.”
It wasn’t hard to see Penguin wasn’t exactly disappointed by this prospect. “S-Speaking of which, uhm, do you… Want to try me on for size?” Penguin grew redder and redder, not trusting he sounded smooth whatsoever. “I mean—Captain would be pissed, so, uh, I don’t mean a relationship, either. I’m not leaving this crew. But—”
“Do you need a blowjob?” You grin at him, bedroom eyes searching for his under the hat shrouding them. “I’m sure you heard everything, you must be pent up,” you purr.
“Uhm—I—Well, I’m pretty… I’m uhm—” You grab Penguin’s boiler suit, forcing him close, and see him fumbling with his zipper. You help him, grinning to find he isn’t wearing much underneath. He had his own tattoos, you ran your fingers from the one on his chest down to the tent in his shorts.
“This should be fun,” you keep eye contact with him as the situation escalated.
“What took you so long?” Law gave Penguin a skeptical glare as he closed Law’s office door behind him.
“Omi—I mean, Y/N’s just fine, Cap’” he can’t help his sleazy grin as he saluted him. “They were just enjoying some time alone in the greenroom, Cap’.”
“Captain,” Law corrected his lifelong friend, making Penguin jump, grin faltering. “What did you do,” he stood up, walked over and took Penguin by the collar. “You look a bit sweaty, there, Pen’.” His pupils had shrunk considerably, leering daggers into Penguin he swore he could feel.
As calmly as he could manage, Penguin kept his lazy grin. “I had to take care of some of the plants, that’s all. Was showing Omi—Y/N how to care for them and, y’know, it’s pretty warm with the heat lamps in there.”
Law frowned deeply, finally letting go of his friend. He didn’t like having developed this jealousy-- as Franky confirmed his symptoms to be. It was stupid, it made him feel sick. Maybe that was where the legend of the Hanahaki disease came from, this pining sensation filled his throat with bile and iron, making it hard to swallow or breathe. Whatever Penguin did was within his right, but Law hated being lied to.
“You’re prepping dinner alone tonight,” Law said sharply, walking towards his desk again. “You better make it good.”
Penguin’s eyes widened in shock, “What? Why—”
“You made out with them. You did something. I know when you’re lying, Penguin.”
Something snapped inside him. Penguin stomped his foot, clenching his fists tightly, “What the fuck does it matter! You don’t want them to stay. Let them do whatever the fuck they want. It’s not my fault you’re emotionally constipated, Law!” He bit his lip, but remained steadfast, whatever Law would dish out he could take.
Law stared at him. In fact, he stared passed him. He was thinking, finally averting his eyes when he had nothing to say. “You’re dismissed.”
Penguin remained in front of Law’s desk; it was his turn to lecture. “You really shouldn’t assume they’ll die with us. You should let them stay, have faith in them. If you love them—”
“We’re incompatible,” Law stated simply, but he tilted his head as though he had his hat on, wanting to hide his eyes on reflex.
“You give a fuck, Law. You do. If you love someone, you should make compromises.”
“Penguin,” Law slammed his palms on the table, standing up. “I don’t need you to tell me shit. My love for them means nothing if we do not agree. I will not change! Neither will they!” He visibly flinched, realizing too late he admitted his feelings.
“Fine,” Penguin sighed. “Then stop controlling them. Leave them alone, Captain. You got what you wanted, right?”
Law shot him a death glare. “Don’t you fucking assume that’s all I wanted. It took trust to get that far. You wouldn’t understand.” Penguin nods in acknowledgement, allowing Law to continue. “This entire situation is distracting,” he spat, “I have duties I must fulfill… If they joined us, that would be a permanent problem.”
“A problem?” Penguin grit his teeth. “They aren’t a problem. It wouldn’t be a problem if you were just honest with your feelings. You can still just be their friend, their captain, because you respect them.”
Silence fell through the room. Law soon let out a long sigh through his nose. Penguin wasn’t wrong, he could continue enjoying Y/N without the commitment if he simply gave them proper respect and freedom. He would ultimately need to heed what they want and whether they want to continue the intimacy or not.
Y’know, the way you’ve treated them… Not to be a downer, but it wasn’t very macho of you, Torao. Law recalls his conversation with Franky, the guilt once again boiling the back of his neck. A partner deserves your utmost respect, their autonomy, to feel SUPER safe with you. Sure, possessive can be sexy, but threats? I didn’t think you were the type.
I just want Penguin and I to be okay, Law had insisted, And they were interfering with that. If they just stuck to me, we wouldn’t have to worry. I don’t understand why they can’t be loyal to me-- at least while they’re here--  instead of causing drama.
Franky snickered at him, eyes crinkling at the corners. You are jealous. A friend with benefit shouldn’t cause anyone jealousy if they spend time with someone else. You’re in denial, Tora-O!
Law had rolled his eyes at him, but he thought about it—until he realized Penguin was gone even after he’d finished his coffee. His mind became clouded, trying to come up with a reason Penguin hadn’t returned. He was holding back the urge to use his devil fruit and find out, but using energy like this was so fucking stupid, he reasoned. Thus, he trotted to his office after Franky bade him farewell, convinced he could drown his worries in research or maybe some wine he had stashed away.
Now he was in the present and it stung. A feeling in his chest told him he feared rejection, but he also feared lose. If he kept his distance, Y/N dying in Wano would only hurt. If Y/N died on his crew, he would not forgive himself. If he could just enjoy them now, as they were, without this envy stabbing him he’d feel happier. Selfishly happier.
Looking up at Penguin again, he tried to sound calm. “Can you at least tell me what you did? Whatever it was, I respect it,” it was almost humorous how dishonest his tone grew, but Penguin wasn’t amused.
Tightening his fists until his knuckles turned white, Penguin finally gave in. “They’re… very good with their mouth. Think of that what you will.”
Law didn’t seem to mind not hearing exactly what Penguin meant. He knew his stomach would tie itself into a tighter knot if he insisted. “Alright, thank you.” Law continued staring his friend down. “I… Appreciate the honesty, Pen’.” He leaned his cheek onto his fist, closing his eyes, a smirk curling the corner of his mouth. “I suppose I’ve fallen for a pirate who exercises their freedom, regardless of how dangerous the consequences may be,” he showed some teeth now, looking up at Penguin again. “I won’t make you make dinner alone. Though, I ask you to help with that tonight. You’re dismissed.”
Penguin let go of a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. Straightening himself out he saluted, “Aye-aye, Captain!” and walked out of Law’s office. Somehow, it seemed he may have swayed Law… at least he hoped.
Law wanted to apologize. It was agonizing, worrying about this all night. Currently he was working through a new textbook, comparing it to an older volume and helping peer review a paper that recently released. Not that his studies mattered to the scientific community now that he was a pirate. Still, it was far easier to study biology than to review his current obsessive thoughts; on the margin of his notes he occasionally wrote down whatever emotion boiled over.
Lately, he had been working with Raizo who—unfortunately—had a devil fruit he was fascinated by. At first, he had been irritated that Raizo wanted to start their training by meditating, but now he asked for it. If he could learn to calm himself, maybe he could think straight about this. In fact, if it weren’t for his meditating he doubted he could focus as well as he did on his studies. It wasn’t only you or the Tang or the journey that caused his mind to run, it was Wano, Kaido and the Poneglyphs, too.
There was a knock at his door. He felt his heart pick up speed and his face grow hot. Was it them? Had they decided to join him after all? He hadn’t expected to feel such anxious anticipation.
“Hey, Captain,” Shachi appeared. Law pressed his forehead to his palm, reeling at the intense spinning sensation as his body adjusting back to a neutral state. “Are you alright?” Shachi walked up to Law’s desk, concern etched on his face.
“Fine,” Law growled. “Get on with it, what do you want?”
“Wanted to ask if you wanted dinner. You skipped lunch and dinner, man.”
“Sure, I’d appreciate that,” Law squinted down at his papers.
Shachi stared at him a moment, as though trying to find something in his expression. Law kept his classic poker face, eyes finally shooting up to leer at Shachi.
“What is it? Anything else?” the irritation in his voice was palpable.
“Uhm,” Shachi cleared his throat. “Y-Yeah! Er, tomorrow, if you wake early, we wanted to watch the sunrise to celebrate our final week at sea before arrival. What say you?”
“Sunrise,” Law couldn’t hide his disgust. “I doubt I’ll sleep enough to—”
“Then stay awake,” Shachi suggested quickly. “Come on, Captain. Lighten up, yeah? Y’know, sunrise is really roma—”
“I don’t need that right now,” Law cut him off. “As it is, I’m too distracted.”
“You’re plans are all set, now all that’s left is to go with the flow!” Shachi grinned. “We’re free this week, Cap’. What about along with that dinner,” he lifted two finger guns at his friend, “We talk, just you and me…”
Law stared at Shachi blankly. All his friend liked to do was cause trouble.
Shachi’s grin only doubled, his sharp teeth glittering. “Come on~, pwease~. I’ve got some juicy gossip I wanna share. You know, about someone you like.”
After a pause, Law rolled his eyes as dramatically, even painfully, as he could. “Ugh, fine. Do what you want, just bring me some onigiri already.”
Shachi returned almost as quickly as he left, setting the dish in front of Law who gratefully began to eat. “Well,” Shachi trailed off a moment, making sure Law was paying attention, “Wolfy’s been spending time with others… So, while snooping, I found Penguin with them. Nico Robin, too. In fact, I swore I saw Nico and Wolfy kissing, is that crazy?”
Law choked on the water he was chugging, sputtering and coughing to regain his composure. “A warning, please?!” He tried to glare, but Shachi only saw distress.
Shachi smirked coyly, wrinkling the bridge of his nose in satisfaction. “Oh you care-care…”
“Get the hell on with it!” Law barked.
“I dunno,” Shachi used his pinky finger to rub the inside of his ear. “Maybe… I shouldn’t say anything else. Y’know, without compensation.” Law stared at him, the bored expression on his face intimidating. Shachi felt blue spread across his face. “R-right, so here’s the thing,” Shachi continued, adjusting his collar as it had gotten hot all of a sudden, “They want to move on from you, man. What did you do?”
Although it felt as though tar filled his throat, Law looked down at his onigiri before taking another bite. “Hmph,” he used the chewing to process his thoughts. “I’ve… done plenty,” he admits. He lifted a paper to his face, looking over the margins. “I’m… jealous—Franky said that’s what this is, anyway—and I need to ask them how they feel about it.” He cleared his throat again, blushing as his eyes darted to the side.
“Jealousy, yeah.” Shachi smiled sympathetically. He knew his friend well, Law hardly ever talked about romance, so this was alien for him. “I’d be jealous, too. Usually, people try to make you jealous when they aren’t sure that you care…”
“I already showed them that I care,” Law calmly scribbled something in the margin again. Showed affection.
“Oh, so you’re convinced that’s the kind of care they wanted? Did you ask?”
Law was dumbfounded, prepared to scrawl whatever Shachi proposed. “Wait, what do you mean?”
Shachi cleared his throat, “Hah, I’m not… a professional at this romance thing. Er, I was just thinking about like… Some people don’t like to only feel lusted after. Some people like when you take care of them or make them food. Some people like gifts or long walks…”
Care about their health. Care about their wants… Shachi curiously leaned over to try and catch what Law was writing. He snorted when Law covered the paper and squinted at him. “No, you can’t look.”
“Okay, Captain Dork,” Shachi beamed, accepting Law’s death glare. “Are you following what I’m saying? But—see, I wanted to suggest something else.” He lifted a hand to scratch the back if his neck. When Law remained silent, he steeled himself and opened his mouth, “Maybe you shouldn’t pursue them.”
Silence followed Shachi’s statement. Law expressed thoughtfulness rather than bewilderment, tapping the bear ornament of his pen against his cheek. “I… wasn’t planning to keep them to begin with.”
“Exactly,” Shachi said, almost sharply. “So, you’re being selfish here, Cap’. You’re trying to make sure they like you; you’re trying to make sure they want you, but you aren’t showing them you love them.”
“I’ve already had this conversation,” Law crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow at him. “I know Pen’ must have told you something. I can’t make up my mind so quickly, I want to use the time I have now and talk with them, but first I need to figure out an apology as well as our dynamic.”
“Then meet us tomorrow at sunrise,” Shachi insisted. “We’ll have some drinks and you can single them out. Then you can make your move, Cap’.”
Law hesitated a moment, crooked grimace plastered on his face as he checked his notes obsessively. Fine… Now what the hell do you recommend I say?” he sighed. “This better not be some sort of trick or your next job will involve mopping the floor with your tongue.”
Shachi saw an image flash across his face. He himself shoving his own dismembered tongue around with a stick. He shuttered, “Y-Yes sir, no sir. I really, really want to help, okay. As for what to say—”
“Alright,” Law lifted a hand to signal Shachi to stop. “Forget the advice. I’ll… meditate on it.”
The morning crept up on Law. He had had another cup of coffee to keep himself awake, but his exhaustion was palpable. Pathetic, he knew he’d look like shit in front of them, so he took a shower. For a few minutes he allowed the water to pelt him, taking deep breaths through the nose, holding them, then releasing them thru his mouth. He did his best to maintain his mind clear, surely everything would be fine...
The Tang floated above the surface, Wano a visible speck on the horizon, the rays of the sun slowly punctured the darkness of the sky, dissolving the remaining stars. The crew were busy setting up on deck, bringing out plenty of alcohol to go around. The smell of fresh eggs and bacon wafted around the halls of the Tang, stirring the other residence to make it for the party. Law had gotten dressed, slapped both cheeks in the mirror and placed his hat over nicely combed hair. The smells snuck their way into his room, both exciting him and making his flipping stomach ache. What would they say to him now…? Why were they so distracting?!
Steeling himself, Law ventured out of his room, met by his closest friend, Bepo, who was already heading to his room.
“Captain~!” Bepo cheered. “Hello, good morning. Are you feeling alright?” His excitement wavered as he looked upon his captain a touch longer. “You don’t look like you’ve slept.”
“Not at all,” Law commented calmly, his smirk remained steadfast as he approached Bepo.  “Don’t worry, I was up late when Shachi asked me I should join you all. I hadn’t meant to be up this long.”
Bepo nodded, brows still stitched together with worry. He hadn’t looked well in a while, like something was bothering him and Bepo knew who it was. If only this were easier. “Captain,” Bepo walked beside him, “Do you need my help with anything?”
Law simply shook his head. “I’ve got it. You know I always have a plan, Bepo.”
Relief seemed to wash over Bepo, nodding and smiling at Law now. “Okay! I trust it should be fine, then… I’ll be here for you, though,” the bear twiddled with his fingers the rest of the way to the deck.
Law first noticed the sky as he exited. The dark blue pushed by the yellow light peeking over the horizon was dazzling so far. He glanced around when he heard the greetings from his peers. The samurai and ninja were enjoying a peaceful placement near one of the railings. Raizo, Kanjuro, and Kin’emon were all smiling at a crowd at the center causing a commotion. Law’s eyes followed theirs. It was the Straw Hats, all chatting and laughing around someone, as well as his closer friends.
Bepo led him over. For now, Law had a pleasant smile on his face, greeting his crew directly as he walked. He was offered breakfast and a drink, he accepted, surveying the tables they were prepping to eat at together. Finally, his gaze drifted up, the sight of yourself and Nico Robin dancing between the crowd made him halt. Robin’s long slender legs were elegant, but a little awkward when dancing alongside your much shorter ones. Your face was level to Robin’s chest, so it couldn’t be helped it was awkward.
They were laughing, twirling to the music Franky had playing on a snail. Robin brought her face close to theirs, leaning in to bump foreheads in pure, blissful affection. It was a loving display. Law tore his eyes away enough to see Penguin, standing to the side gazing at you with a soft smile on his face. Law could tell he was a little jealous, but there was likely no malice in his dear friends heart. Law sighed, golden iris once again meeting the two dancing, his throat growing dry and closing, his heart sinking into his stomach like a brick. Robin kissed you, not on the lips but on the forehead, your paler skin flushing a notable pink from your pretty shoulders, neck to cheeks.
Law didn’t have much time to observe the dress Robin had helped you choose, emphasizing your curves, glittering in the sun. You were wearing a color akin to the sea, such a beautiful color that if Law had looked hard enough, he would have bled from his nose. Unfortunately he didn’t notice, Law turned towards the table to sit at the spot on the edge, sitting in a cross-legged position with arm slung over the backrest. He was clenching his teeth, hat brim low, and took a long swig of beer. At this rate, if he didn’t suck it up and let you join, the Straw Hats would spirit you away. At least, that’s what he thought as Zoro took the time to dance with you now, awkward on his feet, but grinning from ear to ear. Wasn’t he Robin’s other lover, besides Franky? Law tapped his pointer finger on the table, a tch clicked out thru his teeth.
Law could have done many things, drawing his Kikoku in a sleep deprived rage was not the preferred action. Still, he did, and Zoro flung you towards Robin instantly, drawing a sword to block Law’s attack, which surprised Zoro in it’s intensity. Not saying a word, Law pushed, but jumped back due to Zoro’s strength and summoned his Room.
“Law!” You call out, being held back by Robin as the others watched quietly. His crew were surprised, never seeing their captain entirely stop thinking and leap into a pointless battle. “Please, stop!” You shut your eyes tight, all the frustration boiling over into tears as Zoro clashes again with Law once again; he knew Law liked distance, so he made the speedy effort to close said distance instantly. Luckily, Kikoku held up against Zoro’s single sword. Zoro had little intent on hurting Law, but wanted to gauge Law’s speed and strength. Surely Zoro wouldn’t be able to knock him down easily, distraction or not.
“What’s your problem, Torao?” Zoro’s sharp, determined eyes bore into Law’s burning ones, an eyebrow raised. “Take your anger issues elsewhere. We’re going to miss the sunrise thanks to you.”
Law glanced around to see all the eyes watching with anticipation. You had stepped away towards the rising sun, leaning over the railing. Law saw your tail tucked between your legs, ears flat against your head as though to block out sound, and body subtly shaking. He eased off Zoro, embarrassment warming his skin. Bepo gently touched his shoulder, instantly bringing him some semblance of relief. “Captain, let’s go watch the sunrise… Will you follow me?”
Law, tempted to approach you, saw Robin already beside you, comforting you. He felt Bepo’s soft but firm paw tighten on his shoulder. He nodded slowly, eyes shut, taking deep breaths. He felt himself tense like an anxious child as Bepo guided him towards you-- a few feet to the side of you—to watch the sunrise. The steps of the others followed suit. Without covering you from Law’s view, Zoro, Usopp, Ikkaku and Penguin hovered behind you, looking up at the sky as Robin continued comforting you with a gentle hand.
The sun peaked out over the horizon. As beautiful as it was, it moved the viewers on the Polar Tang’s deck to express hopefulness, tear ducts to fill, soft laughter and banter to pass through the silence. Talks about comfort, about the future, even teasing remarks.
“Captain…” Bepo cut into Law’s concentration, his efforts to breathe deeply interrupted. It had, in fact, helped soothed that jealousy symptom that nagged him enough to do something so brash. “You love them, don’t you?” Bepo asked, voice gentle.
“…” Law looked down at the sea, the waves hitting the side of the Tang rhythmically, the suns rays dancing on their surface. “…If that’s what it’s called, I suppose I do.”
He looked up, eyes widening to see Bepo blinking away tears. “Right,” Bepo nodded. “They’re my good friend, I feel… So, I think you have good taste.”
A smirk formed on Law’s lips, the creasing of his eyes welcome to Bepo. Finally, a real smile.
“You should try and say sorry,” Bepo offered delicately. “If you love that person, I can love you too, right?” Bepo played with his fingers, his fur tinting pink.
Blinking several times and adjusting his posture, Law chuckled. “Love me?” He rolled his eyes, “When were you not loving me, exactly?”
Ears flickering with anxiety, Bepo pushed away the idea of insinuating these feelings were like what Law felt for you. It wasn’t… the old love, the familial love he was alluding to. Law was highly intelligent, surely he was simply avoiding stating what he knew Bepo meant. Romance was fickle, it could make or break them. There was no chance Law would entertain such a relationship with the chance of losing Bepo forever. “I love you just as much as I always have,” Bepo laughed nervously. “And more each and every day, Captain.”
Law sighed, smiling warmly at his furry friend. “Of course. As I do you,” he gently pat Bepo on the forearm, then turned away. “I’ll… Talk to them and clear things up. It’s one more week…” he trailed off, the last sentence meant for himself rather than Bepo.
With his still tearful eyes, Bepo watched Law slowly walk towards you, hand on the railing as though for support. He felt comfort as the Straw Hats, Ikkaku & Penguin stepped away from you, giving Law a chance-- with your permission, of course. Hopefully, things would move smoothly and the final portion of the journey could be one of peace before the storm. Bepo simply had to trust Law could from the right words.

Dark elfs doctor ask reminds me of my doctor visits xD
I went to an orthopaedic doctor and surgeon because I fell on my foot
And when he asked me things I told him
Well last Sunday (it was the Monday a week later) I slipped downhill on some gravel and fell on my foot. There's no pain anymore, but it's still swollen and blue and the toes are turning blue as well...
I know it's gonna be fine in another week, but my mom wanted me to have it checked out
So we have some x-rays, and he comes back looking pissed. "You broke your ankle joint!"
Me: "Oh no! That sucks!"
D:"yeah, it's in pieces! Multiple! The hospital will have to put a plate around them!"
M: "Huh, I did not expect that..."
D: "didn't it hurt?" (Bad sign if your doc asks you that, btw)
M: " Well, the evening of and first day I needed to use a chair so I didn't need to put all my weight on it, but it quickly hurt less! 4 days later, the only pain came from going downstairs and folding the ankle... also I can move it and everything!"
So I had to get surgery, and my doc was pissed that I walked on the foot for 8 days... technically 9 cause I went to the hospital the next day
He might have been that pissed cause I had broken the same ankle joint almost exactly 3 years prior, only less complicated(only required1 screw not 6 and a plate), had between the two a light concussion and almost broken nose cause I decided to walk up a ramp that was a waterslide for kids in a public pool and brained myself on the slide tiles
The infection near my main artery in my leg he cleaned out and would have killed me over the weekend
There was more, but I can't remember rn
That man went through it with me!
good lord darling
