Inktober Day 11 ⁘ Wander

Here are six ten moody little sentence from Chapter 11 of Basil Pitch's Diary. (In case you missed it, I posted Ch. 10, September, a few weeks ago, then fled the country.) Baz is hanging in in Niall and Dev's room:

The last time I was here with Niall, he’d told me to hold out for more than ear scritches and the occasional carrot. Now we sat on his bed with a chessboard between us. “Baz,” Niall said quietly. “What are you doing?”  “Beating you.” I moved my queen to menace his remaining bishop. “With Snow, I mean.” Niall did that thing where the rook and king hop around, which shouldn’t be allowed, and I realized he’d won. Again. Somewhere, in a parallel universe, there is a me who grew up with someone to play against, demolishing a Niall who never went to math camp.

Musing: I've actually written a ton since the last chapter even though I've been AWOL, but for a while no matter what I wrote, Baz felt out of character. I'd write a scene, like it, and then think "but why is he doing this?" Then I'd rewrite with Baz behaving completely differently, and that also felt OOC.

I worried that I'd somehow doomed myself with inconsistent characterization, but then I figured it out: Baz at this point is deeply inconsistent. He presents himself to the world one way, he tells the reader / himself that he's something else, and deep down he's a secret third thing. And sometimes his masks slip.

To some extent this is every unreliable narrator. But boyo has REALLY tangled himself up at this point. Something's gotta give. Until it does--which it will, soon--I have to be very clear in my mind, even if Baz isn't, about which Baz is driving the Baz at any given moment.

A lot of you can do that sort of thing intuitively. I can't. So I've been building this out (showing you just the headers b/c spoilers):

This might stultify some (most?) of you. For me, though, it's freeing. When my brain isn't trying to keep track of everything, my imagination can unfurl.

"'Everything'?" you ask. "This isn't that plotty a fic." It's not, but it's already 2.5x longer than anything else I've written, which means developing skills I haven't needed before. Anyway, my BPD chart and I are having fun. We're very happy together.

Posting Plan

I pushed myself to get Ch. 10 up before leaving home for three weeks, because Ch. 9 had ended on such a wretched note. While I was happy to have gotten it up, I didn't love the self-imposed time crunch (though betas @cutestkilla, @facewithoutheart, and @thewholelemon were fuckin' heroes). Feeling rushed had me stressing and second-guessing choices that were probably fine.

My plan now is to pause updates until I have at least a very rough first draft of the final chapter, then post it all at regular intervals. I know a longish pause means some folks who'd been reading along will wait until it's complete, if they return at all. To those folks--sorry, and I get it, and thank you for reading in the first place, and I love you.

However, Simon feels anything but great—he can’t make a single spell work on his own and is openly hated by his roommate. Thankfully, he is befriended by a plucky young mage who lives for adventure.

Six Sentence Sunday

I hope that this spring (or autumn in the southern hemisphere) brings you all the very best things.

Ah well, my brain is a silly place and this story was coming whether anyone wanted it or not.

“If you haven’t guessed, I’m an American,” Shepard Love said, winningly. “But I love Japan. It’s always been my dream to come here.” Peni didn’t need to be told. There was something so American about him. He smiled too broadly. He gestured too much. His accent was terrible. And most of all, he didn’t seem to be bothered that she was ignoring him, so that he was left holding a conversation alone.

He’s alive.  Everything I’ve done. Every line I’ve crossed.  It was all worth it.  Now if only he’d put down the bloody sword and help me out of this infernal trap.  “Snow?” I call out to him.

Still, there’s too much power nestled in his hand. I could sense it when we tumbled down the hill. It was like having a sparking ember crash into my chest. He was so warm in my arms as I grabbed onto him in the fall. And when I offered him my hand, I felt that power even more concentrated. Mixed with a feeling of unbridled urgency.

Why is this slowly starting to feel like a date?  It’s not. I know it’s not. But I still can’t stop my mind from wandering down a path where it is.  As soon as Vera has left the room, I’m rushing to put my violin away and fish my phone from my jeans pocket. There’s no way I’m going to be able to handle being alone with Snow for an entire afternoon - watching him try on clothes and eating food with him.

Thank you to everyone that’s been tagging me all this time!! I do read your stuff, I just have a lot going on personally and academically.

But here’s something I’ve writing. I thought about angsty smut, and I came up with a dub-con, drunk-bathroom sex, getting back together.

It’s going to be two chaptered, so I’m working on the second one, because it’s the smut.

Here’s some:

“You don’t leave someone you love! You don’t pack everything you own and vanish!” I let go of him. “You don’t lose contact with them on purpose or ignore them. If you really had wanted me, you wouldn’t have left me.”

“Simon…”

I punch him in the face. In the nose. Just like I did when we were younger. When we hated each other to no end. His head snaps back in a reflex, and a groan escapes his mouth.

As I see blood peaking from his nosetril, I remember how it felt that time, and I hate how things changed so much for us in this time. I hate that he’s as away from me now as he was in the past. That we’re no longer “us”.

So I kiss him.

I take him by the back of his neck and pull him into me. Like our first kiss.

He goes easily. Almost willingly.

There’s blood and teeth and spit into the kiss but I wouldn’t change a thing.

As I open my mouth more to invite him in, I think of how much I missed this. I missed him. My stomach drops to the floor when our tongues collide.

I have wanted to do a Baz cosplay with my cane ever since I got my cane, and I'm so happy I finally did! Thank you @foolofabookwyrm-activated for running the server's cosplay content 🥰💖 This was so much fun to put together.

Quick notes:

Ignore my boobs. This was the perfect shirt for a Baz cosplay and I couldn't get rid of my boobs.

The object I'm holding in the last photo is a wand! Not sure how well you can see that 😂

I had my mute on my viola so it didn't make noise because there were other people in the house.

I threw my rainbow flag up over my bi flag because I didn't feel like taking my bi flag down, so that little stripe of blue you see on the other side of the purple is my bi flag.

It’s no longer Wednesday, but I didn’t feel like posting then. I have less than a week left for my COBB fic and I am growing slightly concerned as the fic also grows. (Why do I always do this to myself?) On a better note, I did finish my COBB art! Take a look if you haven’t seen it and be sure to check out the very cool fic it’s for: Signs of the Past.

Here’s a snippet from my own COBB fic. The working title was Fit for a King, but I’ve actually decided to call it Strictly Professional.

"This good?" I ask.

He's nodding his head and thrusting into my hand.

"Very good."

To back up his answer, he moves one hand down to cup my arse, tugging my hips forward in time with his next thrust. The hand on the back of my neck reaches up to take hold of my hair and pull.

"Yeah," I say. It comes out sounding more like a growl than an actual word. "Very, very good."

So good, I know this is all going to be over for me a lot quicker than I wanted.

I can't remember the last time I felt this wild for someone. Wanted so badly.

Every touch is a spark, every kiss, an electric current.

I'm a bloody fire hazard in his arms.

I make my way back to the door and grab the grocery bags, heading into the kitchen to put the stuff away. By the time I’m finished and return to the living room, Baz has worked his way through all the envelopes and most of the packages. There’s some stuff we ordered for the flat that got delayed over Christmas– a new spatula, some hooks for the back of the door, and Baz’s fancy face wash. I snatch up a box of chocolates sitting on top of the pile and plop down in the big squashy chair across from Baz. 

“‘Oo are ees rom?” I ask around a dark chocolate caramel. 

“Daphne’s sister,” Baz replies without looking up.

He’s in the midst of opening the final package, a flat one in a cardboard envelope. I’m about to grab another chocolate when the look on his face stops me. The tops of Baz’s cheekbones have gone faintly pink, and his eyebrows are pinched together in the middle.

“What’s that?”

“Nothing,” Baz replies too quickly, clutching the open package to his chest.

Hi everyone! Thank you to everyone who tagged me over the past couple weeks. In the past week and a half I’ve gone halfway around the world, which is why I’ve been AWOL from from WIP stuff. And also why I kind of under-promoted chapter 10 of Basil Pitch’s Diary, which I posted in a fugue state five hours before hopping on a plane.

“Calm down.” Dev slid the plate toward me. I shook my head. “I just want to see the man who deflowered you.”

“Don’t be vulgar,” I said, feeling extremely flowered.

Simon Snow and the Mage's Heir

In the months since coming to Watford, Simon was now positive that not all creature stories were make-believe. Penny’s roommate was a pixie, his Greek professor was a minotaur, and the dean of students was (possibly?) an elf. (Or so the rumours told.)

Simon himself was almost a legend. The Mage had told him that he was the Chosen One. The Greatest Mage in existence. A mage who had been prophesied for centuries, who would come when the World of Mages needed him most. Simon knew he was different. He certainly had access to more magic than most mages ever dreamt of.

None of those stories could have prepared Simon for what he faced now.

Hello friends! Another Wednesday is here.

I'm going home for the holidays today. I really don't want to, but hopefully it won't be terrible!

I started a new WIP yesterday, is anyone surprised? I thought I could finish it quickly but I've already lost steam soooo who knows.

Here's a snippet:

“How do you feel?” he asks, and immediately wants to kick himself. What a question, Basilton. Even in the best of moments, it's the last thing people want to be asked. (Unless they're narcissists. Or masochists. Or simply well adjusted people who don't panic when they have to answer an innocent how are you?)

Simon attempts one of his idiotic grins. It looks wrong on a face that's mostly swollen bruises and bandages. “Fucking peachy,” he says, and Basil has to fight a smile. He can't smile. Simon can't joke about this. He can't. Not when—

“I thought you were dead,” Basil says. He chokes a bit on it. His throat feels dry. (When was the last time he's drunk anything?) I thought I'd lost you, he wants to add, but his mouth doesn't comply.

This fic is supposed to be Comfort No Hurt, because all the hurt already happened. (So yeah there's a bit of hurt anyway. Oh well!) It's an AU, kind of a rivals to lovers thing but at this point they're “friends”. Hopefully I'll continue it soon.

I have nothing to share from The Vampire and the Boy in the Tower, but there's a big chapter planned for today if I can finish writing it on the train later 🥰 I also want to pick up Like We Had A Clue again, try to post at least one more chapter before Christmas (also because I realised that the last chapter is going to be shorter than I thought and it's mostly written already, so I only have two big chapters to write! I can do this!)
