I Wanna Talk About "Comments"
Tumblr media
IMG ID: Yknow go figure you’d abandon this for a popular fandom… goes to show you just write for attention and instant gratification. May as well just delete this. It’s clogging up space. To do all this and walk away for mainstream games is so typical for people like you who claim to be in it for the art. You’re in it for the ratio, you’re in it for your massive ego, so just delete it.
I've been getting a few comments like this lately, and this one is honestly the least biting, but I've been seeing enough of them that I've decided to post this.
I've already deleted this "Named" Anon Comment off the fic, and I'm not going to reply to them, but I wanted to take a moment to talk about this mentality, and why comments like this make no sense.
Basically: They're angry that I'm taking a break from this fic from a small fandom—a fic they've never interacted with—while I'm also writing another story for another fandom that happens to be bigger. This bigger fandom fic has (despite being in first-person with a non-linear storytelling style, famously hated formats) gained a bit of attention. Which is fine. That happens.
So let's talk about why this comment sucks, and why it fails at every level to be any form of criticism, constructive or otherwise.
"abandon this for a popular fandom" Everyone can see that this fic is marked as incomplete. Whoever this is, they chose to click on an incomplete fic that hasn't been updated in eight months—only eight months. A drop in the bucket, really, and the time I went between chapter 5 and chapter 6 was over a year. This is on them. They do not get to put this on the writer. At any point they could have stopped. At any point, they could have closed the fic. They knew this from the get-go. They did not. This was their decision, and they're trying to blame me for their despair. They made it through 245k before they reached this point, and I know because they commented on the last chapter specifically.
"you just write for attention and instant gratification" "Instant"? I don't think this person knows how writing works. Like, on a fundamental level. This story started getting posted in 2020, with my most recent update this year (2023), and they think writing and posting something is looking for "instant gratification". Bold to assume this is "instant". (Bold to assume we have any control over it at all.)
"May as well delete this. It's clogging up space." AO3 is only limited by its server size, and my fic is a drop in the bucket. It is not taking up much in the way of space. Besides, just because something is unfinished does not mean it doesn't belong on AO3. That's why you're allowed to upload chapter by chapter. That is a critical function of the website. It's also an archive, which means it's designed to hold information, finished or unfinished. Again, shame on the reader.
"You're in it for the ratio; you're in it for your massive ego." These are not only assumptions, but if this person is really so opposed to the idea of people doing things for attention, they should ignore children when they need food, only read published novels that are obviously written in a desperate grab for money, and never go on AO3 ever again. If writers didn't want attention, they wouldn't post online for free because they'd just keep it to themselves. And if commenters didn't want attention, they wouldn't comment. (But then would we even have a fandom, if no one's talking to anyone else?) Is this the attention they wanted? Probably. I've found that people like this seem to thrive on the misery they inflict on others.
If y'all care to know why this person was so abysmally wrong in this specific context: (if not, just skip to the end of the list.)
This fic that they're complaining I left for a bigger fandom? I actually left that bigger fandom for this fic. That "bigger fandom" was the first video game I was ever obsessed with. It was 1997, and I wasn't even allowed to touch the console. My brother destroyed the final disc in a fit of rage. I've never even beaten the final boss. It has been 26 years, and for a solid 15 of them I was desperately trying to figure out what I wanted to write for the pairing that changed my life. This fic that they're complaining about me "abandoning" Fires of War for has been rolling around in my brain for longer than the media for Fires of War has even existed. In fact, when you search my username here on tumblr, an ask I sent another user laying this out is essentially the first thing you see. (At least, right now.) In fact, my current user pic is from Fires of War. I did not change it because there's no need to.
Fires of War is actually still in progress, and they would have known this if they read the other comments on the same chapter they complained on. I originally took a break from FoW due to stress, and because no matter what I tried, the next chapter just wasn't working. After a break, I realized why—the outline was broken and needed to be adjusted. Meanwhile, the other fic I'm working on to relieve that stress is much, much easier to write. In my eyes, it's much lower quality, as well. It requires fewer stages of editing. The words flow easily because they're much closer to my speaking voice. I'm not constantly researching cultures I know little about for fact checking and world building and (I shit you not) intercontinental politics. (I once researched the GDP, climate, and economy of Spain in 1986 for several hours and proceeded to have a three hour debate with my editor about a plot point. Yes. Three hours.) Oh, and I don't have to write anything in Iambic Fucking Pentameter. (Yes, that's a thing in Fires of War. They are complaining that I "abandoned" a story that has bits of dialog in god-forsaken Iambic Pentameter. Even at my peak, I wrote 8k in two weeks. But with my current "popular" fic, I can whip out 14k in one. That's how much easier it is.)
I want to turn those "ratio" stats off. I've mentioned this to people a few times, actually—I wish there was a way to turn all stats off on the Archive. They actually give me anxiety. I don't want to know how many comments are on my fic, or kudos are on a little obscure piece. I think that information should only be accessible to the writer, like Tumblr follow counts.
Literally talk to me for three seconds and you will be sick of how into the art of it I am. Holy shit, I cannot shut up. I will include required reading. I will rant about the details I put in for plotlines ten chapters out. I will give you a crash course in tone, word choice, and counting verbs. And yes, I count verbs! Holy fuck I am autistic as hell and this is my special interest. I love writing so much. It's my favorite thing in the world. Please stop my I CAN'T STOP I LOVE WRITING SO MUCH GOD IT'S THE ONLY THING THAT KEEPS ME FUCKING SANE. So you can imagine how misguided I think someone is when they say I'm not into the art of it. It just exposes them as someone who doesn't know what art is.
I'm a hermit who doesn't really go online much aside from using Discord as a free texting app because for some reason every texting app I've gotten has been broken. I legit do not like attention. I talk to like four people a day outside of work. I don't even like it when people complement me too much. Even if I went above and beyond, just one sentence is more than enough and move on, please. It's good to know my actions have had positive consequences, because that's crucial for my brain processing said consequences so I can continue said action in the future because I know I didn't do something wrong, but repeated praise makes me uncomfortable. It took me a long time to understand this about myself. This seems antithetical at first, but I do like the comments that break down the themes, execution, etc. in my fics. If they're breaking things down, moving to point to point about parts they enjoyed, there are giving me critical feedback. They tell me what thy enjoyed, and what was picked up. It's extremely useful feedback to know what they enjoyed, and what stood out to them. It helps me write better stories on the future, and hones how I get my point across. Besides, what is art that doesn't spark innovation and thought? It is forgotten.
The strongest hate is born of love—misguided though it may be—and this person has made that clear. Obviously they care about this fandom or they never would have commented like this. But if they knew more about people and less about what they want everyone to give them, maybe the spaces around them would be safer for the people in their lives—or the people they brush against online.
Comments like this often make people not want to write their fic.
Thankfully, I'm actually am in it for the art, so they might be going out of their way to make the lives of everyone around them miserable, but they haven't achieved their goal here.
However, there are a lot of writers who critically need feedback; who need this positive reinforcement. It's also why it's so important to tell writers why you enjoy their work. Even if it's something small like "I like your word choice" or "I really liked this line" or "I can't wait to find out how they resolve this"—that's feedback more valuable than we can really quantify.
"I like your word choice."—The way you pay attention to the words you use is working with the tone.
"I really like this line."—The way this line is formatted is very memorable and hits better than the others. It may be good to pay attention to it to find out why.
"I can't wait to find out how they resolve this."—You have gotten a good grade in suspense, a thing that is possible and reasonable to achieve (or however that meme goes).
I am constantly learning. I am constantly growing and changing as a person and a writer, and other people are critical to this. Sitting in a room and shouting will not make you better at making jokes, and shoving your writing in a corner never to see the light of day will never give you the tools to communicate with other people.
Sometimes I feel like people like this *points to the top of the page* don't want to learn that lesson, because of the painful reckoning with their actions it will entail.
If this is you, or you have done something similar, I recommend going through, finding your old comments, and deleting them yourself, or even apologizing if you can. Clean up your own mess, so people like me don't have to do it for you. This is a public space. Act like it.

Matt Shuham at HuffPost:
Last summer, a candidate for the New Mexico state House showed up on Nathan Jaramillo’s doorstep. Jaramillo, the Bureau of Elections administrator in Bernalillo County, said Peña had previously sent threatening emails to both himself and to others in the county. Jaramillo brushed it off, annoyed at the personal intrusion but unconcerned. Five months later, Peña, a Trump supporter who lost his election and rejected the results, was arrested and charged with organizing a string of brazen drive-by shootings targeting public officials. Jaramillo thought back to five months earlier, when the man had shown up at his doorstep. The severity of the situation “really hit me,” Jaramillo told HuffPost. “In hindsight, it was a lot more scary.” Now, Jaramillo’s office assigns ticket numbers to emails they receive, organizing them by sender and keeping tabs on the office’s responses, in the hopes of anticipating anyone who could escalate their complaints into something more serious.
But the incident with Peña — who has pleaded not guilty, and whose attorney did not respond to a request for comment — is just one scene representative of an increasingly tense era of American politics. Fueled by Trump’s lies about election theft, supporters of his have spent years threatening election workers and the democratic process — and acting upon those threats. Now, as the 2024 presidential campaign charges toward November, election offices are taking steps they’d never dreamed could be necessary. Several election officials HuffPost spoke to laid out laundry lists of upgrades — everything from ballistic windows, doors and walls to new security cameras, electronic access badges and location trackers on ballot boxes. And as the Republican Party continues to push lies about election integrity — a scripted Republican Party call last month falsely claimed there was “massive fraud” in 2020 — election officials are gearing up to protect what promises to be an even more tense presidential contest this year.
[...] Around the country, election officials are working on evacuation and “quick containment” drills for future potential envelope attacks — even just using a bucket to contain a suspicious envelope — and stocking up on masks, gloves and naloxone, just in case, said Jennifer Morrell, a former elections official in Utah and Colorado and co-founder of an election consulting group during a recent call hosted by the National Task Force on Election Crises.
[...] “Prior to 2016, it was a pretty sleepy industry. People trusted their election officials and the process,” she said. Then, Hall said, “everything changed: When you have rhetoric coming from the top, it empowers and activates people all the way down the food chain.”
[...] But election workers’ preparations for 2024 are complicated by the sheer range of security issues that could come up: Since 2020, for example, Trump supporters across the country have tried — sometimes successfully — to copy data from sensitive equipment like voting machines and ballot tabulators. In Michigan, for example, several prominent Republicans, including a former GOP nominee for state attorney general, have been charged with felonies for their roles in an alleged conspiracy to improperly gain access to ballot tabulators. In Colorado, a former county clerk faces felony charges for allegedly allowing a computer technician to get into election machines under false pretenses; information from the machines was subsequently shared at an election fraud conspiracy theory summit. The answer to these growing threats, according to election officials, is a mix of background checks, digital protections like phishing training for staff and multi-factor authentication for accessing databases, in addition to physical measures like electronic badges that allow different levels of access to observers, volunteers, election workers and government employees.
[...]
Brain Drain
For veteran election administrators, the Trump era has brought with it a troubling wave of resignations. Workers at all levels have decided they’d rather not participate in a process that, in recent years, has led some of their neighbors to think they’re part of an anti-democratic cabal. What used to be considered sleepy “clerk work” is now heavily scrutinized — and, as the Republican attacks against Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss showed, may make people vulnerable to nationwide defamation campaigns. In North Carolina, there’s been a “huge increase” in directors of elections retiring, Bowens said. And Jaramillo described “individuals that were with our office for 20-plus years [who] made the determination that they weren’t in it for the 2024 ride.” Mast said he’d seen an “incredible” number of election workers retiring or changing fields. Among elected clerks, Mast said the position has gone from one filled largely by career administrators who served lengthy tenures to one with roughly 30% turnover every four years. After the “environmental changes” of 2020, experienced clerks have begun leaving the field more often, he said. “It’s incredible to see.”
Election administration was once a sleepy nonpartisan industry, but with rampant election denialism instigated by Donald Trump and fellow right-wing bad actors, election administrators are looking to make safety upgrades before this fall's election.

Visiting the Philippines
Before leaving Asia I visited the Philippines with my dad, as he is friends with a couple who live there and invited us to visit them.
The Philippines consists of more than 7,600 islands. We were on the largest and most populous island, Luzon, which is where Manila is located. My dad’s friends whom we stayed with reside outside of Tagaytay, a city that is technically less than two hours south of Metro Manila, but with Philippine traffic it takes longer than that.
I thought Vietnam had crazy traffic, but getting around there was much easier than in the Philippines. My dad’s friends have a hired driver because the roads are honestly insane to navigate there. In addition to cars and motorbikes, the popular modes of transportation that locals use in the Philippines are Jeepneys and tricycles. Jeepneys are essentially the public buses that people can easily hop on and off, and they’re often decorated to be flashy and colorful. They can get quite very crowded, though; we saw several that had people seated on the roof and hanging out of the back. Tricycles are basically motorcycles that have been outfitted with covered sidecars to transport more passengers. These are also often colorful and overflowing with people. While it is cool to see these forms of transportation that are unique to the Philippines, they contributed a lot to the difficult traffic.
Tumblr media
Despite spending many hours in the car, our hosts showed us around to some great sites. Tagaytay overlooks Taal Volcano, an active volcano that erupted as recently as 2020. One day we took a boat out on Taal Lake to see the Volcano Island. Due to the volcanic activity this island is supposed to be closed to inhabitants, but people still live there to farm and fish and preserve their homes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also went to a beach further south to swim. The water was very clear and calm, making for a pleasant swim. The beach we were at also had boats and water toys available, so we road a banana boat out to sea that allowed us to see more of the coastline and feel some sense of adventure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For our last day we visited Metro Manila to see some historic sites. We went to Fort Santiago, which provides a lot of insight into colonial history. There is also a museum on site there about José Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines who was executed in 1896 for his role in inspiring the revolution against the Spanish rule. We also visited several churches. The majority of Filipinos are Catholic so there are many beautiful churches around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course I cannot forget to cover the food. Filipino food is AMAZING and I am so sad that it is not easy to find where I live in the US. I left the Philippines well-fed with a stomach full of Halo-halo, Adobo, Chicharon, Lanzones, Mangoes, Pomelo, Sinigang, Lumpia, Kare-kare, Pancit, Milkfish, Bibingka, and Buko Pie. This is not Filipino food, but we also got KBBQ as a treat and it was only about $10 USD. One of the things I will miss most about SE Asia is the availability of incredible food.
Tumblr media
Overall I really enjoyed the Philippines and was glad we got to stay with people who live there to see some things that the average tourist would not. Besides the sites and food that I wrote about I also loved how warm and welcoming Filipinos were, and I would love to go back some day. Our hosts recommended Palawan or Boracay for the most beautiful spots so those are now on my bucket list.

WEEK 6: SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS AND THE SLOW FASHION MOVEMENT
1. Fast fashion:
Fast fashion has grown in popularity in recent years, coinciding with rapid development and the demand for inexpensive and convenient clothing in the "fast-food" manner. Dr. Preeti Arya, an assistant professor of textile development and marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, defines fast fashion as a business model that focuses on producing clothing in large quantities and as quickly as feasible in reaction to current trends (Nicioli 2023). The term first appeared in a New York Times article in 1989, when Zara's first store debuted in the United States. According to the Times, the clothing were meant to be designed from concept to final product in 15 days, at moderate pricing and with client ease.
Tumblr media
Ever since the inception of "fast-fashion" trend, brands such as Zara, H&M or Mango has been trying to replicate styles which inspired from prestigious runways of New York, Milan, Paris, etc. The great side is that they can do a mass production of those so-called "trendy designs in real-time" as brands can deliver vast amounts of apparel and ensure that customers never run out of inventory (Stanton 2023). The goal is very clear: Getting these designs into customers' hands while the clothing is still popular and affordable. Buyers can experience dressed in the same manner as their favorite celebrities, as if they were on the real fashion runway, for a much fairer price.
2. Impacts of “instant noodle” fashion styles on the environment:
Tumblr media
However, everything has their own down side and fast-fashion is not an inception. Given the fact that brands have been producing clothes in mass quantities, the consequences of it has always been a hot topic, if not the hottest to debate. The fashion industry has faced criticism for failing to address social and environmental concerns, putting non-financial expenses on the global agenda (Niinimäki et al. 2020) and an analysis from Business Insider has proven it right. Fashion production accounts for 10% of total world carbon emissions, which is comparable to the European Union. It depletes water resources and pollutes rivers and streams, and 85% of all textiles end up in landfills each year (Maiti 2024). Washing clothes everyday might seem to be a harmless daily to-do in every individual's bucket list but in reality, it throws 500,000 tons of microfibres into the ocean each year, which is comparable to 50 billion plastic bottles. Fiber production is also regarded as one of the major contributions to the industry's worldwide pollution footprint. The survey also discovered that fiber production has the greatest impact on freshwater withdrawal (water diverted or removed from a surface water or groundwater source) and ecosystem quality due to cotton agriculture. The UN predicts that by 2030, emissions from textile production would have increased by 60%.
3. "Slow fashion - slow food - slow digestion"
On the other brighter side, Kate Fletcher (2007) developed the slow fashion movement after being inspired by the "slow food" movement, which promotes responsibility in food production and consumption. Slow fashion companies prioritize craftsmanship, environmental stewardship, and high-quality items (Brewer 2019). Slow fashion is a fashion philosophy that values sustainability, ethical principles, and quality before quantity. It focuses on quality above quantity, ethical manufacturing, sustainable resources, local production, and transparency.
4. Effects of slow fashion on the environment:
Subsequently, slow fashion emphasizes environmentally friendly processes and ethical working conditions. In contrast to fast fashion, it values quality and longevity while advocating for both the environment and people. Slow fashion promotes environmentally friendly materials, decreases waste, lowers carbon emissions, and encourages ethical manufacturing practices. It also ensures quality manufacturing, which extends the life of the garment or material. A growing number of farms and organizations support the slow-fashion movement. One such example is the Better Cotton Initiative, which establishes principles and practices for sustainable production, while several other organizations provide resources and information to modern farmers. Slow fashion seeks to foster a more sustainable and ethical fashion sector that prioritizes workmanship, durability, and social responsibility by encouraging thoughtful consumption and responsible production processes.

There are aspects of this that contain a grain of truth, but the way it’s framed & oversimplified to claim there’s been no (or even barely any) change to Chick-Fil-A is simply factually wrong, and is still an example—albeit definitely a far less violent and egregious one—of the all-or-nothing maximalism and failure to accurately assess threat scale that I’m criticizing in the original post.
I think looking at the actual numbers will help put this in perspective. Chick-Fil-A went from a yearly donation of:
~$2 Million (out of ~$4 Billion sales) to several directly anti-queer groups, many of which actively used that money to lobby against civil liberties for queer people & are listed as hate groups by the SPLC, in the early 2010s, to
<$2 Million (out of $9 Billion sales) to 3 groups that, while structurally discriminatory against queer people, were not actively campaigning against civil liberties and are not listed as hate groups by the SPLC, and did use that money to provide legitimate services, in the mid-to-late 2010s, to
$0 to 0 hate groups from Chick-Fil-A itself (out of $21 Billion sales) & <$2000/ from the owner Dan Cathy to the NCF, which donates to thousands of Christian organizations, some of which are listed as hate groups by the SPLC, in the late 2010s to early 2020s
That last one is what is being referred to by Dan Cathy donating towards lobbying against the Equality Act. As of 2021, Dan Cathy donates less than $2,000 yearly out of his personal billions (compared to the $20,000,000,000 of his company’s yearly sales) to an organization that that divvies up donations to thousands of charities, many (but not all) of which are problematic, and range in severity. Is that bad? Does that reflect poorly on who Dan Cathy is as a person? Sure.
But the scale of the actual material impact here is a drop in the bucket in a drop of a bucket in a drop of a bucket, to the point that as it stands now:
more of Chick-Fil-A’s money goes directly into the pockets of queer employees in a single day than Dan Cathy donates to anti-queer causes with his own personal wealth in a full year
you could easily buy the most expensive meal at Chick-Fil-A, three meals a day, every day, all year, and not even a fraction of a penny of your money would go to those anti-queer causes; you are not contributing to them in any meaningful way by eating there
Dan Cathy already has billions and if CFA didn’t make him another penny he would still be able to keep donating $2K in perpetuity until he dies without making a dent in his fortune; you are not preventing him from doing so by not eating there
you would be hard pressed to find a multi-billion dollar company/corporation/franchise whose owner does not spend at least $2K on something shitty or evil
At the end of the day, Chick-Fil-A is a company. Its owner is a shitty billionaire, like any other big company. Needing or expecting either a company or its billionaire owner to be moral & good is an unrealistic and weird expectation to have, and one no other major fast food chain or Capitalist endeavor is passing. CFA is interested in the bottom line & avoiding bad PR, and as such the trend has been that CFA immediately folds and makes major concessions every time there has been any significant pushback to its donation structure.
There have in fact been major changes to Chick-Fil-A in regards to its corporate and donation structure, both from 2012 to 2018 and in 2019, to the point that it does not pose any meaningful threat to queer people. the hyperfocus on a chicken restaurant as representative of anti-queer anything at this point is just unreasonable, outdated, and thoroughly disconnected from the actual material impact it doesn’t have on queer livelihood.
And further, it is exactly this disproportionality and disconnection from real life material impact in favor of moral symbolism that enables the hypocrisy I’m criticizing in this post: Regardless of anything that changes about the company’s actual actions, even when they have no meaningful impact on queer life, Chick-Fil-A nevertheless symbolically represents being anti-queer now and forever, while Hamas (et al)’s real life impact on queer people can be literally life and death, but as long as symbolically they represent freedom & resistance, you’ll have queer people defending them.
it is wild to me that you will legit get more flacc in American & online queer communities for saying it’s maybe not that big of a deal to eat a chicken sandwich from a company that stopped donating to anti-queer lobbying more than a decade ago than you will for directly engaging in political action to support a terrorist organization that actively tortures & executes queer people to this day

2020. Finally, my Japan dream came true. This destination has been on my bucket list since 17 years old but of course as a lower middle income firstborn, Japan is but a dream. Lalo na, I stopped school that year and yes, I’ve no passport pa so hindi talaga aligned. Such a vivid memory tapos naluha ako kasi hindi nga aligned. So yes, Japan dream is more than the usual dream. MMK levels pero may hefty serving of Emily In Paris, third world edition. Not a super fan of the whole pop cult thing pero kakanood talaga ng Eiga Sai ‘yan after sawaan ang reruns ng anime sa free TV. No prob naman sa anime reruns pero as we adult, the themes that we are looking for get more real and darker.
I also love Jap food kaya nung may sweldo na ako, Little Tokyo is my break from reality and insanity. As I was downing salmon and uni sashimi, inisip ko na ansarap na nga dito nung version, what more sa Japan mismo ‘di ba? Ah. Kakalig the thought!!!  Hassle ‘yung concept map sa utak ko now kasi andami ko na namang gustong sabihin about this dream turned reality, pero sige, gawin na natin kasi I am giving myself 45 mins. max para malatag ‘to since dami ko pang tasks for month-end, the coming months both sa work and outside work. :D ‘Yung work, OK lang e, ‘yung outside work ang mas nakakapressure to be honest. Deadlines versus dead lines na naman po ang peg natin because Taurus szn is fast approaching.  Upon careful research and well-curated content about Japan, I picked Osaka-Kyoto over Tokyo. Never talaga ako fan ng cityscape kahit super sure akong I will bask in the clever design and myths of Tokyo. Also, cheaper ‘yung cost estimate ko ng Osaka. LOL. Osaka because it’s the kitchen of Japan saka mas accessible sa USJ. I got my passport and syempre, saktuhang budget is USJ x Harry Potter. ‘Yung tatay kong pakitong-kitong as usual basher kasi ‘yung travel date namin is really close to the pandemic lockdown. Pero, nilaban ko kasi ‘yung mismong good friend ko from Tourism Board PH mismo, go pa rin kahit ilang days later pa sila nag-travel. Anxiety 100000000 ako pero dahil nga mapilit ako and YOLO moment ko ‘to, sabi ko na I WANT THIS SOOOOO BADLY. Hamuna COVID noon. Plus, I monitored the news naman talaga na wala pang cases in Japan. My good friend assured me na that I can fly pa talaga plus sabi na push ko na kasi sayang since alam niyang gustong-gusto ko ito. Sabi rin niya, I will be getting rekta updates from her bago sila mag press release sa madlang people, so ayun na nga. Wala na. Touch move. Bahala na. Bye, Pinas. Babalik naman ako.  Dad was so ugh. Baka raw deliks mag-fly, etc. Finally, I said na kung ayaw niya, iiwanan ko siya. Period. ‘Di ako nag-mega plan para lang mapunta sa wala ‘yung hirap at pagod ko. At the back of my head, alam ko he means well pero, syempre, push ako. Plus, alam ko rin dahil Q4 pa lang, deep dive na ako about the pandemic, this flight may be the last one na and will resume ulit sa panahong ‘di ko masabi mismo. LOL. Laban lungs mantra was birthed. :D Graphic. Fantastic. As if, hindi niya ako kilala. As in. Sidenote: One of the reasons why I don’t have a new car is because between a car and travel, travel is an essential for me.
As usual, before pa lang mag-take off, tulog na ako then ‘pag gising ko, nasa Osaka na kami!!!!! Ritual ko ‘yan sa lipad na matulog kasi usually, first flight out, last flight in ako. Less stress since forever delayed plus maxxed out mo talaga ‘yung mga araw na andun ka sa pupuntahan mo.  And, damn. Ang lamig. Eto pala sinasabing Osaka has an air that brings chills to your bones. Partida, mga 11 degrees levels pa lang ‘yan pero lamigin talaga ako so parang kakalas buto ko not because may edad na but because ganun talaga since 17 years old. LOL. Si dad naman, super onti lang ng layers ng damit during our whole stay. Happy siya sa malamig. 1 heat tech top, 1 heat tech bottom, Levis 501s, Levis shirt, kicks, beanie, heat tech socks. Syempre, another challenge is hindi maligaw sa train. I can’t forget my first time to pee in Japan. Solid na agad. Hahahahahahahaha. ‘Yung kakalma ‘yung pantog mo to the point of nearing meditation state na. Shet. Just realized na ‘yan pala unang-una kong ginawa as soon as I landed. Sabi ko after hitting the flush button na this is a worthwhile trip. Mhie, ano na? Why naman ganun?  So, kinikilig talaga ako pero shet, ang hirap mag-navigate lalo na I really have a hard time na ‘di maligaw even in Manila. Pero pinaghandaan natin ito. In a mala-Recca hyperfocus mode, kinausap ko mga dragons para ma-sure na maging bragging rights ko na yes, first trip ko to Japan took forever pero ‘di ako naligaw. CHZ. Pride talaga. My vice. My poison. Pero kahit mapride ako, isang tip para ‘di maligaw is ask for help. HAHAHAHAHA. Sobrang they take tourism seriously and syempre, hardworkers talaga sila kahit robotic na galawan pati smile and quality of service nila.  And, we rode the train na shet apaka layo. After what felt like forever sa train, bumaba na kami. FUCK. Nike girl kasi talaga ako because of the brand story pero comfy pair talaga UB sa travel in all fairness. Ni-research ko rin ‘yan ng bonggang-bongga and my good friends also bashed me na bakit ayaw ko bigyan ng chance ang UB. Mahaba ‘yung lakad pero ‘yung hotel I booked is sobrang lapit sa mismong stairs ng station across Uniqlo and H&M. Hahahahaha. Kaya pala kahit super sale like 70% off ko siya nakuha, mahal pa rin for me. As in. HAHAHAHAHA. Eto na po. Ubusan na ng funds pero go lungs. Eto na ‘to.  Siguro, talagang sabi ng universe, sigeeee. Wait ka muna diyan. Tiis lang muna para sa first trip mo sa Japan, talagang masasabi mong, the dream is worth the wait. Habang papalakad kami sa hotel, naluluha ako. TENGENE. So weird pero ganun talaga. Babaw ko talaga. Hahahahaha. Lakad-lakad. Check ng mga damit and other stuff. ‘Yung mga dala kong damit, mas mura ko nabili sa Manila kaya wala na akong binili. Common misconception kasi na mas mura damit sa ibang bansa. Nope. Kahit compare ko pa sa Malaysia and HK, since budget hunter nga ako and curator (ems), maraming good deals sa Pinas. Hahanapin mo lang talaga. Kahit sale season pa ‘yan. So if may bibilhin ako, naka-compare na ‘yan sa kung ano mang meron sa Manila agad. If mas goods, go. Else, sa Manila na lang ako bibili.  Natulog lang ako then poof. Masks are being hoarded na. I didn’t get pa kasi sabi ko later na. Messaged my good friend and asked anong lagay ng Japan lalo ng Osaka. Confirmed. First case. Meron na. Sobrang efficient ng Jap government. Nawala bigla ‘yung hoarding ng masks. And widely available. LOL. ‘Di naman ako nag-hoard since 2 lang kami ni dad. Tuloy pa rin ang mga turista. Marami-rami ring Pinoy, pero for me lang, solid kasi onti lang talaga ang tao. Wala akong nakitang bata masyado sa train, and  bulong pa ni dad sa train, feeling daw niya bumata siya kasi halos puro oldies ang kasabay namin pa-USJ station. LOL.  COVID kagulo aside, sobrang sulit kasi ‘di masyadong mahaba ang pila which I abhor sa lahat. Halos nasolo rin namin ang fave spot ni dad as a tourist spot lover sa may Glico Man. Hahahahahaha. Todo pic and selfies siya tapos ako naman, nag-try ng secret menu na squid ink takoyaki + whiskey highball by the river so early in the morning. Pero super legit and one for the books. Plus morning booze is liferrrrrr.  Si dad, kanin pa rin bfast. 7Eleven baka naman sa Pinas galingan niyo. Hahahahaha. Sobrang sarap pero kaya mong umubos ng 1-2K ‘pag gusto mong mag mini bfast haul. In Jap, convenience stores plan their inventory based on the weather. Galing nooooh. But, sabi ko nga kay dad, andito na kami, so fuck it. Hahahahahahahahaha. And nakalimutan ko rin magbook ng hotel outside USJ that time kasi ‘di ko naconsider ‘yung COVID cases as a variable sa trip na ‘to. ‘Di ko naman puwedeng bully masyado dad ko kasi kita kong worried din talaga siya.  Soooo, Harry Potter. Sobrang galing kasi kahit bumili pa ako ng early access ticket, walang pila. As in. Kahit saan. Tapos cutie pa na kasabay namin pumasok ‘yung mga school kids with their signature uniforms and backpacks. Such a pak snippet talaga. ‘Di na ako masyado naka-snap ng pics and vids kasi ‘yung kilig ko ‘di ko na talaga kinakaya. As in. Shaky hands talaga ako na akala mo naman first year student ng Hogwarts.  Also, hearing KAWAII irl is soooooooooooooo euphoric. Hahahahahahaha. Tabi. Wala kayong paki. In Jap kasi, ngayon-ngayon pa lang na-counter culture ‘yung plus sized women. Stick-thin talaga sila for a long time kaya getting KAWAII with peace sign irl is sooooo glorious. Tapos ‘yung mga nag-comment diverse sila: staff, students, teens, parents. So benta po tayo, opo. Confirmed. I usually shut down compliments and pick up lines kasi ‘di ako fan. I am sooooo critical sa self ko as a panganay na laging “not good enough” ang side dish sa bawat meals. :D Luh but true that bit.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaah. Hindi naman siya pasavogue but it’s so me. Then medyo off lang ako sa merchs kasi mas maganda ‘yung quality ng scarf plus a tiny haul gifted by a good friend from London branch. Tipid mode try pa ako kasi since nga wala akong napiling souvenir maliban sa magnet which is weird because I hate magnets, pero ang ganda lang nung magnet na ‘to. Mga 600 php din kaya dapat talaga maganda. Pota. Then, I got a plastic mug ng Butterbeer. Mhie, ang mahal. Hahahahaaha. Leche. The picture ulit. More Kawaii comments in the air. Tabi ulit. Tabi. No prob. Kasi ‘di naman siya nagbayad. Hahahahahahaha. Sabay sabi niya sana all. LOL. Very third world po tayong nakaka-LL pero shet. ‘Wag ka na mag-convert. Harry Potter ito e.  ‘Di na naman ako nakakuha ng as much photos and vids as I should kasi nag-immerse lang ako sa moments na andun ako. I have arrived. ‘Yung kababawan pangarap ko, natupad na nga on steroids pa. Then, kasama ko pa dad ko. LOL. Sabi ko rin, in a few years, ‘di na to makakalakad ng 2 hours straight. Dati, kahit 4 hours lakad, g lang. Now, medyo iika-ika na siya e. Hahahahahaha. Sorry dad. Better late than never.
Just after sunset. This is a plot twist. Be warned.  While Japan is a dream, its realities hit me so hard.  Imagine? So saddening and maddening. Tapos, bakit sobrang ‘di pa sila happy e maganda ang infra, healthcare at iba pa nila. Sa Pinas, sobrang olats pero kahit tambay makikita mong masaya, as in masaya.  Tagal kasi nung stoplight sa Ped Xing. Kaya naluha ako. Slight lang naman.  Yes, Japan happened at this point in my life to make me see na though money is never an issue sa akin, it was a cause of shit sa family namin. But, money is but a means to have more options lang talaga. ‘Wag mo isama ang essentials diyan a. Beside the point ‘yun. Really had to wait this long kasi kung noon siguro, naging alipin na tayo ng well-dressed fallacies of success. ‘Di ko sinasabing ‘wag mong hangarin ang mas pak na income and benefits. What I am saying is that money and happiness are not bedfellows most of the time.  Kung baga, e, ‘yung Kobe beef meal namin ni dad na syempre, pinaghirapan natin is good but the memories that go with it makes it worthwhile. Saka, sa truth, I don’t like steak bilang seafood po tayo. At, nag give way ako kasi gusto raw niya. Kakanood kay Mark Wiens. Pota. Kaya ekis yung king crab. Need ko talaga mag-prioritize that time e. LOL. ‘Yung ngiti sa mata ng tatay ko nung binilhan ko siya ng Tokyo release ng Olympics (if I remember right) nakita kong na-proud siya sa akin. Nagpa-thank you sa akin tatay ko. OPAK. LOL. Iyak-tawa siya e. Ako naman, kurot-kirot inside but maintained ang RBF natin because fuck off.  Nag-go na ‘yung ped xing light. I looked up and whispered: Thank you, universe. Thank you, mother dragon. Your love and life lessons live on, indeed.  ‘Di na kita nakasama sa Japan kasi ikaw ang pinaka nega star and love-hate bestie ko 5evs talaga. And 100% sure ako na if andito ka, ‘di ako matutuloy kasi syempre, gagamitan mo na naman ako ng “ikaw ang nanay, ako ang anak” very “tabi na. Alvene” argument mo. Hahahahaha. NKKLK. Parang may sapi.) + biking sa gedli naman this time around. I-add ko erotica scene. Erotica ha. ‘Yung artful at rooted sa phenomenlogy of love slant. Photo op with Jiro and location nung Railways na Jap movie. CHZ. At saka, baka naman mahaginan ng company trip if and only if makapag-summit levels ng Mt. Fuji ang mga kaganapan. Luh. Luh. Luh.  Linawin ko lang ‘yung erotica scene. In Japan, sex/work mindset ng mga tao kaya sobrang dying breed na talaga sila. ‘Di ba ang weird? ‘Di naman kelangang maging hayok pero I want to understand bakit ganun though may mga assumptions na rin naman akong bitbit. Si V kasi may pakana nito at mga pasa-links and memes niya kaya napunta ako sa universe na ‘to. Again, goes back to first world ka pero bakit ang unhappy mo much? Bakit?  Oks na? :D LELS. Baka ma-screenshot ako e. Hahahahaha. CHZ.  AGHHHHHH. How to balance career x lifegoals. Know your why and why not. Easier said than done, but can be done. AJA!

Escape From Paradise is a USA based travel blog by Ingrid Lemme - an award-winning TV Host, Publisher, and Travel Writer & Blogger.
Our Story:
My husband and I are snowbirds, some of these fortunate retirees that are able to fly south as soon as it gets colder in the northern hemisphere. We think of our home locations as paradise, as we are spending our summers in the mountains of West Virginia, our winters on the ocean in Palm Coast, Florida and then in between we are visiting my beautiful hometown of Montauk on the East End of Long Island, New York. As much as we love the places where we live, Marcus and I are adventures and we are always looking forward to another exciting "Escape from Paradise”. Life is short and the bucket list long ;) ….
