A hairy star chickweed with multiple flowers and stems with cauline petiolate foliage arises out of a choss pocket with rich mesic mineral soil.
An ode’ to Stellaria spp. a brand new group of interest to me.
I want to talk about this I do, These are from last year, here we have a case of me learning that I was just accepting these as just starry chickweed and realizing that I never learned to ID past that point. This is S. pubera but, why and how, usually I associate this plant with mesic woods only but in truth we see “it” as a complex everywhere, there are only a few legit Identifiers for this. These won’t show you good examples of this issue of ID or the complex but I took plenty of photos this year that I haven't uploaded on my cpu yet. The S. pubera complex seems to revolve more around site, height, morphology, and range restrictions, the flowers are the same in the complex and tend to be large, the issue with some minor distinctions are clumping populations with multiple stems and single stems individuals with one flower only per plant, the leafs tend to either be cauline entirely sessile or having lower petioles that are cauline with almost near clasping sessile leaves t’word the top. The interesting thing is I can still make a claim that it is S. pubera and not S. corei due to a few minor differences, It definitely helps to have a well backed range map too but these are somewhat incomplete due to mis-ID and un-updated herbarium specimens.
Two key characters Ive focused on are length of sepals being much longer on Core’s and the petals being almost fully dissected down to it’s attachment point.
Its more clear to see this S. pubera, the sepals are not longer than the petals and you can clearly see the 5 dissected petals that are bifidate instead of core’s which really looks like 10 petals at first glance. So, with that said, I can only ID these when they are in bloom. Most Key texts/ flora’s are also only up to par with this ID limit.
Stellaria corei, Tenessee chickweed, a cool species for sure now that I know it correlates with ecotone in many cases.
Stellaria corei, an interesting common name for something who’s core is the Ohio River Valley, Its one of those common gripes you learn to deal with because you have to accept a described from location as common name instead of just calling it Core’s starweed or chickweed. Ecotone rich mesic alkaline hill to dry alkaline species. Really a generalist but does occur more often in these specific woodland ecotones.
Stellaria fontinalis, I literally went to TN and was at Mays prairie, I was distracted and I feel really dumb too many distracting endemics imo, At the same time, I was very distracted by snowy orchids, blue rattlesnake master, 10 species of st. johns worts, Silphium mohrii and many other cool species. This is a wet karst species that I managed to overlook :/ learned about it this year, rather 2 months ago in prep with plant walks.
Stellaria pubera, starry as a complex, common chickweed, Coastal, Great Plains, Pacific, Atlantic, Upper Midwest, Rocky, and Mesic, SIngle flowered sessile, Cauline petioled multiflower are still all deciding factors.
Stellaria longifolia, narrow long leaf species, might as well look like it should be angustifolia or longifolia or linaris would of also been good names for it.

MerMay + Offense Class
(yea im gonna be real. I think the other two would be finished until June so here's what I got rn)
(i'm also aware about how inaccurate for two freshwater fish species to be next to a ocean fish but these are half-person; half-fish so realism is already out of the window)
Soldier - Bluegill / Lepomis macrochirus (state fish of Illinois, since Soldier originated in the Midwest)
Pyro - Black Dragonfish / Idiacanthus atlanticus (i just thought it fits because of the name)
Scout - Brook Trout / Salvelinus fontinalis (state fish of New York, invasive species of trout; i.e. these mfs are technically everywhere in the Northern Rocky Mountains in Canada)

Brook trout! (Salvelinus fontinalis) I once saw a bunch of these little guys in the stream while taking flow measurements, fell in love with them then and there.

Dsmp characters as fish because a special interest of mine is northeastern game fish 👍
c!Ranboo - Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)
Basically the loser of the fish community lmao. They are really sensitive to their surroundings. They need the water to be a certain pH and temperature in order to survive. They are migratory in order to fulfill those needs. They are also bullied by other fish (specifically brown trout) to the point where populations are dropping. They are one of the more timid and docile species of trout. They stick in small groups. They will become aggressive when feeding or defending their spawning nests. Brook trout also have some of the most unique and colorful patterns. Brook trout hybrids are common occurrences
c!Tommy - Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides)
Largemouth are the fish that is in everybody’s business. They are very much in your face all of the time. Simultaneously both very smart and very dumb. They commit to one spot to make their nest and will defend it fiercely. They are picky where they put their nest and spend a lot of time maintaining it to keep it in good condition. They typically will live in the same body of water and not migrate out, but will change depths depending on the seasons and where food is located.
c!Tubbo - Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu)
Basically the Largemouth’s little brother. They are very similar but the smallmouth are typically smaller and bit more docile. They are also arguably a bit smarter than the largemouth as well. They are also very territorial and will defend their nests. Their nests are also well kept. When defending or hunting, they fight like a tank. Although smaller than the largemouth they pack a bigger punch. Smallmouth are also more cold tolerant than other fish.
c!Phil - Walleye (Sander vitreus)
Walleye remind me of crows. They have terrific eyesight, which is why they have big eyes. Their unique eyes allow them to hunt at night. They have one of the greater lifespans and can live to be a couple decades old. Walleye spend time in schools with members similar to them. They like to lurk in deeper cooler water. They are more active at night and more docile during the day. They become aggressive when seasons change and they have to stock up for the winter
c!Techno - Bullhead catfish (Ameiurus melas)
Bullhead are similar to walleye and live in similar conditions. They like cooler murky environments to reside in. They are docile if left alone. They will become predatory and territorial if provoked or feeding. They have venomous spines on their fins which hurt like a bitch if you get stung (not fatal). They scavenge more than hunt and scrounge around the bottom looking for food. They fight hard and hit hard. And once they have something they are very determined to not let it go
c!Wilbur - Brown Trout (Salmo trutta)
Brown trout are actually invasive and are not native to North America, they originate in parts of Europe and Asia. But they have now established themselves as part of the ecosystem. They compete with the native species and often pose a challenge. They are typically bigger than other trout species and their competitors get shoved around a bit. Browns are smart and cunning, and are very successful hunters. They are arguably the most territorial species of trout
c!Quackity - Musky (Esox masquinongy)
Easily one of, if not the smartest gamefish. They are nicknamed “the fish of ten thousand casts” because they are very picky and know how to differentiate lures from real bait fish. They are hard to catch. Muskies are ambush predators and will eat anything that fits into their mouth. This includes waterfowl, rodents, and frogs. They are elusive and like to stick to themselves. Musky are very dedicated to their territory and will fight any intruders out
Yay fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#disclaimer I am no professional biologist and I have heavily personified the fish lmao#this was fun I might do it with other characters#I ♥️ fish#yknow what fuck it I’ll main tag this one#c!ranboo#c!tommy#c!tubbo#c!philza#c!technoblade#c!wilbur#c!quackity#dsmp#text

“Pumas aren't even in the same genus of lions there's literally no way for them to reproduce and make cubs. Whoever made that suggestion is dumb "
i cannot stand people who don’t know basic shit about science i’m BEGGING yall to understand that scientific rules are not all size fits one jesus christ. Yes, typically it is much harder for two animals in separate genus to breed but it is NOT impossible and saying that it is just shows that you don’t know shit about advanced biology. it is okay to not know something but stop being so wrong so loud please. There is a name specifically for hybrids of two separate genus, they’re called intergenetic hybrids.
Known hybrids
-Pumapard (Puma concolor + Panthera pardus)
-beefalo (Bos taurus + Bison Bison)
-Caraval/servical (Caracal caracal + Leptailurus serval)
-dogxim (or Graxorra)
-chinese false-eyed turtle (Cuora trifasciata + Sacalia quadriocellata)
-Hybrid Iguana (cross between Amblyrhynchus cristatus and Conolophus subcristatus)
-Savannah and bengal cats (Hybrids of Leptailurus serval and Prionailurus bengalensis respectively with domestic cats, Felis catus)
-Ursid hybrids, so most bears of different genus can interbreed excluding giant pandas
-Yakolo (Bos grunniens + Bison bison)
-wholpin (Tursiops truncatus + Pseudorca crassidens)
-tiger trout (Salmo trutta × Salvelinus fontinalis)
sorry if this was too aggressive but PLEASE don’t call people dumb when you’re being a fucking idiot 🙏 it is common fucking sense to use google guys.

Day 2 of Fishuary!
Prompt: Salmonid
—
Can you tell I’ve never drawn a fish like this before? Cus I haven’t lmAO- but! Looking around at salmonids I settled on the beloved brook trout <3 if I haven’t made it clear yet, I’m not sticking completely to the animal’s natural colouring, instead saturating certain aspects!
Salvelinus fontinalis is the name, being pretty is the game. These dudes are GORGEOUS. Maybe that’s why they’re the state fish of nine different US states! I don’t know too much about these goobers other than photos of them are super silly, they’ve got huge eyes and no thoughts behind them. Good for them!!
I see pictures ranging from ‘game fish size’ to ‘sitting in some dude’s palm’ size. I just wanna hold them…

IN MEMORIAM:
Wilhelminus Otto Petrus Panter IEdéfix.
Geboren: 7 of 9 juli 2007, Broekop Langedijk, Noord-Holland.
Overleden: 23 oktober 2023, Hoorn, West-Friesland.
Grootmoeder: Mariska Steltenpool.
Beste vriend: Wenzel Fanvliet.
Lievelingskleur/eten: Muisgrijs.
Niemand noemde hem poes, katachtige of Wopperik. Genderaliseren was men/hen/hun/hemsie vreemd.
Not done. Wop was autonoom.
In Kat Wie Trast

Tagged by @belphegor1982 for the “Share in a new post the last line I wrote and tag as many people as there are words.”
I’m doing three lines because you need the full context to appreciate it--
“Remind me again,” Daphne sighed, looking up from the book she was reading. “Why are we memorizing the Latin names of all these plants?”
“Because the common names vary by era and by language—and mixing them up can have disastrous results,” Vincent replied, calmly. “For example—putting Sphagnum moss instead of Fontinalis moss will turn your fire-resistance elixir into embalming fluid.”
“…Yeah, like, let’s avoid that,” Shaggy said, his eyes wide.
Tagging anyone who wants to do this!
