I'm joining @homsweethom and her #FollowHerLead campaign by sharing a story that will hopefully help empower women in our creative industry. ⋅ Two years ago, a well-known stationery boutique here in LA put out a call for a "creative collaboration," seeking a hand lettering artist to design a print to promote their business. I submitted my work, was asked to come in, talked through ideas with the owner and left floating on cloud nine. I was so excited about the gig that I forgot to discuss compensation at the meeting (ugh) but I *really* wanted to work on the project, so I delivered sketches anyway plus a ballpark price for the design. Knowing the owner was a female entrepreneur who ran her own small business and worked with other creatives in our field, I presumed she would understand the value of paying for custom work. Pfft. ⋅ I was told exactly what you see above (that's my "you've gotta be f*cking kidding me" face), followed by "I'm sorry if this wasn't clear to you from the beginning" and "I absolutely respect your time and talent." (Which, to be clear, was clearly NOT the case.) She then clarified the designer would offer their work in exchange for exposure and press, and that the print would be featured on her blog, social accounts and are quite popular and get lots of buzz. None of this was discussed in her original post or our in-person meeting or I would've never bothered. Also, those terms are completely and utter garbage and it's infuriating that just because you're a creative (and/or a woman), you don't get treated with the same amount of respect. Ain't nobody got time for that. ⋅ I stuck to my guns and we ended up meeting halfway at a price that was above my baseline but not what I wanted. The print was well-received, but that exposure/press/future partnership (predictably) did nothing for me. ⋅ Addressing fair compensation upfront is crucial as a creative professional. It's a lesson I learned the hard way and by sharing this story, I hope you don't have to. Your time and talent are valuable. Never forget it. #ladiesgetpaid #fuckthewagegap #followherlead

Making real money off of art is hard. @homsweethom is holding a contest to empower female creatives by sharing stories of when a client said something that questioned our creative value. She lettered this card inspired by my story: I received an inquiry from a business who saw an original piece in my portfolio and wanted to use it to promote their business. I said that I would be happy to let them use it if we sign an art agreement for usage and I charge a licensing fee. The only email response I got was, "I won't use it if you don't want me to." I never actually gave them a number so in essence that response was, "no matter what the cost is I will not pay you to use your artwork for my profit." If I don't stand up for value in my work, no one will. Too many people do it for free, which creates the idea in clients AND artists that asking to be paid is asking too much. I refuse and I stand with you @homsweethom to say that art is a REAL profession deserving of REAL money and RESPECT. #followherlead #ladiesgetpaid

It was so hard to decide what type of scenario to write about, because there have been so many stories I could share from my over my 30 years of design work. Don't steal someone's art and profit from or even use it without offering compensation. It's their intellectual property.
