Sujo e vestindo trapos, ele carrega um saco nas costas que usa para raptar crianças. O Papa-figo mata os meninos e meninas mentirosos para chupar o sangue e comer o fígado (daí o nome, corruptela de papa-fígado). Segundo a lenda, a criatura é um homem que sofre de uma rara e misteriosa doença (para alguns, o mal de Hansen), o que explicaria sua aparência grotesca).
