Eyyy! Love that you caught both of those, haha. Cosmo Sheldrake's great to have on in the background while writing, so it was inevitable I'd borrow lyrics for at least one fic.

pass by the day was going to be for a phandom event, but 2020 was (obviously) a tire fire so I dropped out. Even so, I still want to finish this one. 'Danny gets stuck in the Thermos' is a phandom trope I've wanted to play with for actual years now, if only to get this gif out of my head

we'll sleep when the morning comes is one of three chimera fics I am just itching to throw myself headlong into* once I've finished at least one of my current big FMA projects. This one would be from Hawkeye's POV, and would focus on the hanging plot thread from mangahood of those off the books State Alchemists that were making all the chimeras. It's also the heaviest on that good good body horror, aka my favorite trope to write.

*The other chimera fics are she sang to me a language strange, deadfic wip version is posted here, and we danced with our heads hung. Chimera fics are a great way to take fandom tropes like wingfic and mermaids and make them upsetting. :)

so like, key things would change but the basic fma concept stays the same. do quirks exist in an alchemy world? is alchemy still special though if quirks exist? but otherwise how would fumi get stuck in dark shadow.... and i want hawks to have his wings :’( goddammit rain i want to force this to work so bad but it’s sending my brain into meltdown!

ok, quirks exist as well as alchemy because i say so. who the hell do hawks and tokoyami try and bring back from the dead? their mom? are they biological brothers? MY HEAD HURTS. i have an overwhelming need to make all crossovers make sense and this is taunting me. alright, hawks is an alchemical prodigy and tokoyami is his adopted baby brother. at 11, hawks tries to bring back their mom (fumi is 5, old enough to participate but not really know what’s happening.... yes, when i was 15 i wrote a huge fic around the premise of al being 6 years younger than ed, i have experience in this area. please don’t read it).

fumi gets stuck in dark shadow’s body (oooh, he could share a consciousness with dark shadow? or not), and keigo is stuck with a shadow-child for a sibling and boatload of guilt over what happened.... you know what, i bet truth takes his wings. or one wing. a leg initially, and then a wing for payment when he ties fumi’s soul to dark shadow. he gets an automail leg but kind of just... has one wing now? i i dont think automail wings would be very practical. or maybe it could work. (fun fact, i also once wrote an fma wingfic where ed loses one wing 😭)

i’d shake a few things up from here. dabi takes on a mustang-ish role but he’s still only 3 years older than hawks (don’t rlly wanna fuck with the ages). at 14 he’s another prodigy state alchemist and he’s the one to recruit hawks. timeskip time! if this was a fic i’d set it when hawks is 22, meaning tokoyami has been dark shadow for 11 years (yikes). i kind of want him to have to pretend to be hawks’ quirk—lets say dark shadow needs a host and without tokoyami’s physical body, hawks becomes dark shadow’s host. so no one except a few actually know that hawks’ “quirk” is actually his little brother (rain, i’m having way too much fun, i’m stopping here)

Of the AUs I came up with myself, the latest is a Wolfwood wingfic we’re currently kicking around.

We’re cutting this because I just cannot stop talking about my AUs and it’s getting. SO LONG.

I won’t explain all the underlying headcanons we’ve propped it up on, but basically the Eye of Michael ritual Wolfwood went through involves magic in our stories. And the EoM -- no one, in fact -- knows that it’s magic. They just are going off of old notes talking about a strange energy they found and blah blah anyway Wolfwood’s been modified with magic and plant blood to get the effects he has in canon.

Which makes it really easy to justify me rolling up to Mary in Discord and going, basically, “Hey, what if after Wolfwood’s procedure he starts to get what looks like a massive back infection. He’s sore and sickly and struggling to do his normal training and he can’t lay on his back and has to wear loose shirts. Everyone’s sort of waiting and watching to see if he dies or not, and Chapel is annoyed his project might be about to fail on him.

...and then one day Wolfwood’s laying in his room being tended to by Wynn (yeah she’s there but- well I’ll explain further down) and his back bursts in a gross mess and when he cleans himself up he feels so much better. ...and has wings.

They’re not even *useful* wings. He can flap them but they can’t support his weight. They’re basically just in the way.

...pretty much all mine and Mary’s discussions about this have been the hurt/comfort feels of him angsting and wondering if he might die while Wynn also has no idea what’s happening. The physical relief after his wings emerge. The attempts to get to the shower and get clear after without anyone seeing him. The days of laying in bed unhappy as Wynn dabs his back with a cool damp rag to try and soothe the swelling...

Oh, yeah. And Wynn in an angel in this.

I said before I’d explain the “angel AUs” sometime so here’s part of the explanation now.

There are 3 different angel AU bases depending on the setting. One for the City AU, one for FMA, and one for Trigun. I’ll leave the others for later. Trigun is the oldest anyway.

So it all started with “what if Wynn was Wolfwood’s guardian angel” and we based a whole AU off that which I won’t get deeply into here because this isn’t that AU, this is a branch from that. Because there, Wynn was a sort of modern pop culture-ish concept of an angel as a divine being that can choose to be visible or invisible. She has a True Form but generally appears like a human woman, with or without wings, to not hurt mortal eyes and brains.

...and then we saw the posts about “what if angels were like birds” again and THIS angel Wynn is a little white puffball of ambiguous (changing) size that Wolfwood found outside hiding in the shelter of a rock just after a sandstorm. She had a broken wing or two (she has multiple pairs of wings. I think 3 pairs?) and so he took her in and tried his best to nurture her back to heath.

Wynn was not yet fully sapient, because okay. Backstory. God in this AU is NOT a full omni god. So he couldn’t see the future to know that Knives was gonna do a fuckery on the SEEDS ships, so he only sent a handful of angels along to watch over the humans. They have this whole colony thing in the bag, they’ll be fine. Just a few guardians will do. And only one with any seniority, the rest he just made on the spot. Welcome to life, go with the ships.

In the ORIGINAL angel AU, Wynn is one of those “fresh” angels. Only gets to see earth for a little bit before she’s packed on a spaceship to float around making sure the techs notice loose bolts and shit. But the fluffball AU? The angels are on Gunsmoke, looking around at this wreckage. Flying themselves ragged trying to keep up with the survivors. There’s just not enough of them. Well, maybe they should try this whole “creation” thing and make more of themselves. They’re not on God’s level but if mortals can do it they can try. ...by ripping off the mortal method.

So they produce babies. It doesn’t matter how, what matters is they produce scores of these pigeon-sized fluffballs who aren’t born sapient but gain it over time. They’re not really immortal yet either, though they’re ageless and hard to kill. But as they get older they get more and more control over their divine powers and they get smarter and smarter, and eventually what I’ve been calling the “establishment angels” swoop in and give an offer. Remain in the mortal world, or come join the establishment angels doing their jobs protecting humans. You’ll remove yourself from direct interaction with the mortal world and we’ll help you gain the rest of your power.

So Wynn is still in the “nonsapient fluffball” phase when Wolfwood finds her huddling in the shadow of a rock, injured, blinking up at him with her many many eyes. He’s expecting her to shrink away from him, panic and flail, run, something. But she’s got spiritual empathy and knows he wants to help her, so she just lets him smuggle her inside and make her a soft nest of blankets and try to see to her injuries.

When she’s better he tries to release her outside by just.. leaving her outside and shutting the door. But she shapeshifts herself hands and just lets herself back in, so he wakes up to her tucked into a ball against his side. She’s not letting him kick her out.

So, by the time of the EoM’s surgery and procedure on Wolfwood, Wynn’s getting pretty smart and after this whole wing mess when she struggled to comfort him... she starts teaching herself to talk so she can help him better.

But for the actual time where he’s suffering those worried days not knowing if he’s about to die of massive infection or not... she’s a many-winged puffball awkwardly trying to drag a wet rag over his red and swollen back.

...we’ve been talking about this specific AU on and off for days now.

For Ed’s wings I chose a Harris Hawk because black and red coloration matches Ed’s outfit, they’re alternatively called ‘wolf hawks’ how fma-coded is that name it’s so badass, best eyesight of all hawks, Riza HAWKeye, theyre used in falconry which the military would love because it means they would be a) widely available and b) the bird-part of the chimeras brain would be pre-trained to be obedient and follow commands, they’re one of the only kinds of predatory birds that have a pack mentality which would have a hierarchy which they could rearrange into an officer/subordinate system easily, they have this really funny behavior where they stand on top of their pack mates to get a better view.

And Ed always needs a better view because he’s because he’s so—

He’s got his gun here because he’s in a violent insurgent kind of mood and he’s helping Greed’s crew and Wolfie commandeer a secret military chimera base.

More of my thoughts:

Ed’s automail is actually helpful to him. All Bird chimeras have trouble getting off the ground due to their weight and will usually use a cable and reel on their belt to “launch” off the back of a truck or train going full throttle, kind of like a kid getting a kite up. Once they’re up, they’re going, and Ed is no different, even with his automail— it mostly just wears on his stamina, and his harness (I forgot to draw it) helps mitigate that too, so he’s fine.

Other chimeras, due to the size of their wings, have trouble making quick turns or adjustments. Meanwhile Ed can turn on a dime by twisting around and kicking his automail leg really hard.

The only real problem that his automail presents is in his port system actually; in the fact that his ports are built off of and bolted into his bones, except that his bones are hollow now, so if he jostles his arm or leg wrong he could shatter the bone and disconnect his automail, and likely damage his remaining limb so badly in the process that he’d never be able to get a new port system/new automail.

The idea is kind of that Ed gets kidnapped into a Military Chimera program while he’s still in the hospital after the 5th lab, because they were struggling to figure out how to transmute human-birds that would live and function, and they knew he’d studied Tucker’s work. Believing they’re going to hurt Al—who’s nowhere near this place and has no idea where his brother is—he figures it out. They make him the first test because they can’t exactly let him go. It’s successful, but after he’s transmuted with the birds, he gets amnesia and mentally regresses to cope with being a human chimera. He gets trained as an actual soldier now, an aerial sniper, but after a few months of missions he catches sight of his brother in east city and remembers everything— now he’s going to tear the military apart with the help of his friend, Wolfie, who has a strangely familiar voice, a wolf head, and a wicked skill with throwing knives.
