Ana and I are visiting the vet tomorrow to see how her toe has healed this past week (two weeks? I've lost track of time). It will be interesting to see what they say, considering she's a master at escaping her bandage 🫣

I'm very thankful for the support you guys have given me since this accident, but we're not really out of the woods just yet. As I mentioned in my original post, we have tomorrow's visit plus, most likely, a third visit in another two to three weeks. Veterinary costs are expensive enough, but then we have the medicine she has to take on top of that, which insurance doesn't cover 😭

But I Don’t Want To Challenge Your Troublemaker!

The astute among you will notice that this is not the Mane that I announced last week. Unfortunately, I ran into a giant creative block with Fluttershy, and my deck last week had put a niggling idea into my head concerning this deck, so I decided to make this one instead and give my thinking about Fluttershy another week to marinate.

This is actually the third deck already that I’ve built for this Rarity, and I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the interesting ways that you can play with her, even if she’s unlikely to be viable competitively. Put another way, if I had a local group to play with, I can imagine that I would be bringing decks with this Mane to it a lot, even if I would probably never play her in a tournament. This time, though, my initial idea was something that at least in theory sounded like it may have some competitive value, as it is kind of a control deck with an accelerated win condition through reliably gaining a big pile of AT.

In one of my previous decks, I had made the connection between this Mane and Lord Tirek, Meddler, though in that deck I used it to implement card recursion. What I only this week realized, though, is that Tirek forces the opponent to challenge him, meaning that even though it’s my modifier that’s forcing them to start the faceoff, they are still starting it. For the purposes of Prepared, this is a big deal. Thus, I had the skeleton idea for the deck: play this Mane, Tirek, Bodyguard, and a metric ton of removal. Build up a big pile of Unicorn tokens at Tirek’s problem, drop a Unicorn token on their side with our Mane, and on their turn they’ll be forced to give us a pile of AT through those Prepared triggers. Then we turn that AT into points via the usual Mistmane approach.

Now, shortly after starting to build this deck, I realized that although that general strategy is pretty sound, there’s a big issue, and that is the Mane itself. Somehow (maybe because this Mane wasn’t necessarily supposed to be used for control) we have to make a Problem faceoff happen before we can settle into our control gameplan. Because, unfortunately, getting Rarity onto her Boosted is absolutely critical. If this Adventure, I would absolutely consider the Yellow splash for Fluttertone, but given that this is Core, all that we can really do is just play like a midrange deck and try to start a faceoff, I guess. There’s an obvious problem if we ever run into another control on the other side, though at least we are able to start LLP to give us something to do in that case.

The choice to include Purple comes down to a few things. First, Immediate speed movement is just generally great in a control deck, and has some extra utility for the early and midgame. AT generation with Starlight is also great, as we have some AT-intensive tactics that we’ll want to be using, like Delivery Mare to clear things off of the opposing side. Twilight & Rarity is also a great tool for any Troublemaker-focused deck, and Hyper Beam is one of the better options for Resource removal that we can integrate, given that these two colours are historically awful at it.

In the end, this design doesn’t quite have the “metric ton” of removal that I had been envisioning, although there certainly is a fair amount of it here. Delivery Mare is a good option against tokens, as they have cost zero, while we also have a lot of targeted big target removal thanks to the White events. One interaction that I particularly like is that the Mistmane cycle itself generates Unicorn tokens as the Mistmanes are dismissed due to Uniqueness, so if we have some spare AT on a turn, and especially if we have multiple Bodyguards in play, we can turn that spare AT into even more later by scoring and creating the Unicorn tokens now.

Ultimately, this Mane is seriously held back by her Start-side ability, even though the rest of this deck looks quite interesting. It probably requires significant tweaks to reach a final optimized form, but I can see its path to victory, which is more than I can usually say of the things that I build in these posts. Especially if we get some way in future sets to boost a Mane aside from the usual method, I think that this is absolutely a concept that I will try to return to. As it stands, again this is something that might be a lot of fun in a local group, but probably not a good idea to stake your tournament life on.
