“I know courtly life is not of interest to you, but this may prove an exception.” His eyes flicked to mine, betraying the importance of his speech.

I shrugged, holding my jaw tight to fight a yawn, “I would not describe politics as a hobby of mine, but don’t let that stop you.” 

Eyes back on the prizes, he continued, “I was taken in by a very quiet rumour. A certain knight has just returned after besting another. This was quite a coup for him, as the other warrior was one of some renown.”

Leaning back in his chair, his enlarged eye met my gaze steadily. “Much to his consternation, not to mention the chagrin of his household, he had scarcely returned home when a metaphorical glove was found adorning his doorstep.”

I buried the sinking feeling in my stomach and responded, “I’d imagine that was quite an unwelcome surprise.”

Nodding, he leaned forward to consider the next piece. “Quite so. Decorum would call for a rest period, but I suppose honour waits for no man. What makes this more unusual was that the challenge specified a ring round, not a bout. You’re familiar with the concept?”

I sighed an affirmative, saying, “Instead of ramming each other with a big stick, the knights use the stick to try and pick up a series of rings, the one with the most rings wins, right?”

A small smile played across his face. “That’s the gist. Although less interesting to the common spectator, the match is surprisingly important to the court at large.”

“Must be a lot of pressure on our noble knight.” I responded in a monotone.

“Truly unfortunate, but necessary I suppose.”

Tucking the Baron’s signet ring away into his desk, he emerged with a small coin purse which he clunked onto the turntable.

“Would you care for a receipt?”

“Nah,” I waved it away as I picked up the purse, “they trust me.”

A single nod dismissed me, leaving him to update his ledger and the man outside the door to collect the sorted goods. 

Exiting his office, I turned the opposite way that I had been led. Generally, I’ve no reason to spurn the familiar, but I make it a habit to vary my exit routes. Entrances are less important; I have the only other key and I never carry it with me. The “lock” is actually magically tied to the keys in some arcane manner; no pick would open it. I’d know, I’d had Sarey try. The box itself was also rather obstinate; no hammer would even scratch it. I’d know, I’d had Baret try that too.

I hummed as I walked, letting my feet carry me through utilitarian offices and dusty storage rooms as I turned Feddigan’s words over in my mind. Many lifetimes ago, some smart thieves decided they needed a way to discuss crime in broad daylight without arousing suspicion. They developed a language within a language, called a cant. Everyone uses their cant differently, almost like an accent to disguise their words. Take Feddigan, for instance. A banker speaking of the noble court and duels is par for the course. But if I were to mention the phrase “knight of some renown” in a tavern, the room would be deprived of oxygen when everyone collectively gathered breath to laugh. This accent, as it were, meant that I had to spend a little bit of time decoding his words. 

I checked my fingers off as I considered. Firstly, the only thing he might know about is our next job, but he generally wasn’t given much more warning time about jobs than we were. Secondly, the fact he’d met my eye pointedly when he started to speak meant that his words carried a pretty big meaning. Fourth, using the setup of a “knightly duel” meant that this job had a third party, someone who was already contracted to steal the thing we were assigned to. Fifth, a “ring round” meant that the third party wasn’t intending to harm us. Yet. 

I closed my hand, unwilling ot count higher. Unfortunately for me, the mention that the outcome was important to the “court” meant that this job wasn’t just for profit, it had political repercussions. In short, I had to hurry back home, as we were on a time limit.

In about half the time it took to get delivered to Feddigan’s office, I emerged out of a back entrance into the light of the now firmly risen sun. As much as I wished to participate in the regular post-score activities, I turned my feet and headed for home. Duty called, apparently.

The cabinets largely depend on your preferences; some may look more traditional, while others still appear modern.

1. Shaker cabinet doors. These belong to the most common and popular cabinet doors with recessed panels and clean lines and offer tons of flexibility regarding style. Shaker cabinet doors are usually found in stock kitchen cabinet designs.

Designing a Luxury Kitchen - Top Five Suggestions

The internet is full of articles and sites that are crafted by people claiming to represent the luxury kitchen market.  However, "luxury" is an over-used word these days.  Now that "luxury to the masses" is a common marketing concept in everything from handbags to kitchen tile, it has become difficult to wade through the plethora of information to find what the true luxury consumer is really looking for....to be set apart from the mass market.  As a kitchen designer for a high-end British company, I seldom engage in projects that cost less than $100,000 (often the cabinetry alone surpasses that amount).  Therefore I consider myself to be on the front lines of engagement with the real luxury consumer.  If you are building, remodeling, or designing a luxury kitchen, (or perhaps you just want to emulate one), then consider these suggestions.

1.  Understand the difference between a framed cabinet with an inset door and a cabinet with an overlay door.  A framed cabinet with an inset door is considered to be the higher-end option while cabinetry with overlay doors are the more common type seen on the market today.  Many of my clients are not familiar with this difference when they visit my studio and if you are unfamiliar as well, I encourage you to view cabinetry from both categories in person.  It is a little bit difficult to visualize, but essentially a framed cabinet with an inset door is  a cabinet box with a stationary frame mounted to the front of this box.  The cabinet door then sits inside (flush) the frame.  Traditional English cabinetry was bench made in this manner and it still holds appeal today.  An overlay cabinet can have a frame or be frameless, but regardless, the door overlaps the frame or box.    A frameless cabinet with overlay doors can be very desirable in a contemporary kitchen where clean, smooth lines are desired.  However, in terms of traditional cabinetry, this is seen as an inexpensive way to produce a lot of cabinets.  A framed cabinet with an inset door is a lot more work to manufacture and requires a great deal more craftsmanship to get everything properly aligned in its aperture.    If your home value is over $1.5 Million, you really should be purchasing framed cabinetry with inset doors.  There is simply a perceived quality associated with it.

2. Spend your money on high-end refrigeration. Most of my clients still opt to conceal their refrigerators behind custom cabinetry panels.  However, even if you want the professional look of stainless steel, I would encourage you not to skimp on your refrigerator.  A few years ago, Sub Zero had a firm corner on the market for fully integrated refrigeration.  By "full integration", I mean that the refrigerator can be designed to sit flush with the cabinetry (24" deep) without the need for a stainless steel grate above it, and without an exposed stainless steel frame.  Now, however, there are several more manufacturers offering this feature, including Miele and Thermador.  While not all of my projects utilize a fully integrated refrigerator, the vast majority of them do.  Luxury kitchens frequently feature a pair of refrigerators that are paneled and trimmed out to look like an armoire or beautiful piece of furniture.  In fact, this can be your kitchen's best focal point if done well.

3.  Design a space to conceal all of your counter top appliances, such as coffee makers, toasters, blenders, etc. Most high-end kitchens that are well designed allow the homeowner the luxury of having "uncluttered" counter tops.  After all, aesthetics are a big part of what you're paying for.  Sometimes this can be a large walk-in pantry with built-in cabinetry.  Alternatively, I have often employed a method of creating a tall larder cabinet in close proximity to the sink and refrigerator.  This larder cabinet, complete with pocket doors,  can have an internal counter top with outlets affixed to the back of the cabinet for plugging in an assortment of small appliances ranging from the microwave to the stand-mixer.  The idea here is that everything is easily accessible and already plugged in.  No luxury kitchen should require the homeowner to pull out a heavy appliance from a base cabinet.

4. Consider using a mixture of counter top materials. In large luxury kitchens today, a single marble or granite material on all counter surfaces can look quite cold.  Perhaps it is because these large kitchens simply have so many square feet of counter top material.  Regardless, this is a careful line to walk because using too many different materials can quickly look like a trend.  To be easy on the eye, consider using your stone of choice around the perimeter counter tops  and then opt for a wood top on the island.  This breaks up the coldness factor of stone  while not conflicting with the pattern of your marble, limestone, or granite.

5. Don't put a stainless steel panel on your dishwasher. This is really just a pet peeve of mine.  Personally, I don't think the dishwasher is an attractive appliance.  Therefore there is no added value in putting a stainless steel panel on it - even if all of your other appliances are stainless steel.  Placing a stainless steel door on your dishwasher just breaks up the visual line of the beautiful cabinetry on which you are splurging.  I strongly encourage you to consider a fully integrated dishwasher model.  Miele, Bosch, and Asko all currently offer excellent fully integrated models.  Again, the term "fully integrated" means that the entire dishwasher front (including the controls) are concealed behind a cabinetry panel.  If done properly, you will not be able to distinguish between your dishwashers and any of the adjacent cabinetry.

The Tiny Zone: Between Two Worlds

A few wisps of trailing white fog clung to Riley's legs as she emerged from the roiling clouds, putting the latest trial that the two of them had overcome together firmly behind them.

Riley cradled Ethan close to her hip, shielding him protectively from the strange world that they'd been thrust into against their will. They were both in this together, she knew, but it was different for him. He was so small and fragile, so helpless without her protection. He needed her. And after a couple near misses where she thought she'd lost him, the feeling of his tiny warm body against hers was a reassuring one.

"Three down," she said softly. She'd seen how Ethan winced when she spoke too loudly, and she didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable. "We've got this."

Ethan wrapped his hands around her pinky reassuringly, and Riley's heart gave a little flutter as she walked them through the latest in an endless series of doors. It was such a small gesture - literally - but it made all the difference in this cold, sterile place of plastic and machinery. Together, she and Ethan could overcome whatever weird tests and trials their sadistic captors threw at them. Riley was sure of it. Hell, she was starting to enjoy the challenge.

Ethan gave a low whistle as they stepped into the next room. "Well", murmured Ethan, so softly she had to strain her ears to hear his little voice. "That's different."

The space was a simple one, another plain featureless chamber like all the others they'd been in. This one was occupied by three objects and absolutely nothing else. The first of them was a panel - inset flush with the white plastic of the wall, it was a plain black rectangle that reminded Riley of a flatscreen TV. And, on either side of the panel, two complicated-looking machines that both seemed to primarily consist of a ring-shaped assembly, with lots of cables and wires that trailed off and disappeared into the walls.

One was pretty big, big enough that Riley could have stood inside of it quite comfortably. The other was small enough that she didn't even notice it right away, but - Riley thought with an increasingly unwelcome sense of realisation - it was just about the right size for someone like Ethan. One for her, one for him.

Before either of them could think of something to say, the black screen suddenly flickered into life. Symbols began to appear, fading onto the screen one after another - bizarre, unfamiliar glyphs that hovered there for a moment before transforming into English letters, as if they were being translated in real time for Ethan and Riley's benefit.

"No one will ever- are these guys for real with this Scooby Doo shit?" scoffed Riley.

"Wait... does that mean..." Ethan trailed off, leaving the rest of his thought unspoken. It might have been, Does that mean we did it? *Or maybe, *Does that mean it's over?

Riley noticed a low hum running through the room, so quiet it might have been there from the beginning. It was getting louder and higher-pitched with each passing moment, though, reverberating unpleasantly in the air. As it rose in pitch and volume, it was soon accompanied by a shuddering that shook the floor under her feet. The combination made Riley feel a little sick to her stomach.

"Wow, that is not a fun noise!" said Ethan, covering his ears as the shrill tone got louder and louder. "If this is how they plan to finish us off, their technique leaves a lot to be desired!"

Suddenly there was a brief whine like an old-fashioned camera bulb firing, and a blinding white light flooded the room. Ethan cried out in discomfort, and Riley grimaced and raised her free hand to cover her eyes. When the light receded, the two machines had changed. They were active.

A shimmering curtain of color hung in each of the metal rings, flickering and distorting occasionally as though it was suffering from interference. Despite that, though, Riley immediately recognised the scene visible through the bigger of the two rings: it was an image of her own bedroom, the bed she'd been sleeping in when she was whisked away. The image showing through the smaller ring was harder to make out from her perspective, but she would lay odds that if she put Ethan down in front of it he'd see something very similar.

Ethan seemed to have figured it out, too. "I guess that settles it, then." he said. His voice was subdued - was it a mournful note she detected, or was that just wishful thinking? They'd really only known each for about an hour, after all. It was pretty silly to expect him to miss her, wasn't it?

"Yeah." Riley replied, trying to inject a chipper note into her voice. "Home sweet home!"

"I'll be honest... I wasn't sure they were going to let us go."

"I mean, it's true what the screen said." Riley shook her head. "Even if we went back to... back to our worlds and told everyone, who would ever believe a story like this?"

"Yeah," Ethan said with a sad little smile. "A story like ours... it's pretty unbelievable."

Riley leaned down carefully, intending to put Ethan down on the ground. Something made her pause, though, and she brought her other hand up to support him instead, cupping him in her fingers. She brought Ethan up to her face, looking down at him sitting in her hands like a little doll. He smiled uncertainly, and she tried to commit every detail of his face to memory. She had the horrible feeling she was never going to see Ethan again.

"Hey," she said quietly. "Before I let you go. I just wanted you to know... I won't forget you. Thank you for trusting me. I wish... I wish we could have met, in the real world."

She kissed him on the cheek - or tried to, at least. Since her mouth was almost as big as his entire body, it was kind of awkward, and he tensed up when she pressed him to her lips. But it was the thought that counted, right?

"Riley..." Ethan said. He looked up at her with shining eyes as she gently set him down on his feet. "I won't forget you, either."

There was something else to say, but Riley didn't know what it was. For a long moment, the two of them stood there, regarding each other in silence. In the end, it was Riley who broke the spell.

She took a step back, then another. She couldn't bear to prolong this moment any longer.

"Good luck, Ethan. With everything!"

There was a hiss and a crackle and an ozone smell in the air, and then Riley was gone. Ethan actually saw her appear on the other side of the portal, fading into existence like a bad effect from some corny old sci-fi show. She whirled around immediately and stared right at him, but he could tell she wasn't really seeing him. He watched her face fall through the distorted surface of the portal, watched as she wandered over to her bed and sat down.

His portal was there too, whirring softly and waiting for him to pass through. He could see his bedroom through it - shamefully messy as always. He'd been meaning to take those cups down to the kitchen for days. Through that little ring was his life: his home, his family, his job, his friends. A world perfectly sized for him, where he wouldn't be in constant danger from everything around him. His world.

A world without Riley.

Ethan looked down at the floor solemnly, his fists slowly closing and opening. When he looked up at his lifeline back to safety and normality, his expression was blank.

Ethan turned away and ran to the other ring, as fast as his little legs would carry him. He plunged through the shimmering veil of Riley's portal without a moment's hesitation, and his tiny body vanished from sight with an equally tiny pop. The portals remained open for a moment longer, then the whirring stopped and the veils of color faded away. A minute later, the ambient light that suffused the white plastic of the complex winked out, plunging the chamber into darkness.

"Riley! Riley, I'm here!"

"Ethan!?"

Somewhere mysterious and remote, in a control room of white plastic covered in lights and dials, two aliens gravely regarded their instruments. One was very tall. The other was so tiny that they had their own little control station, complete with a chair that looked like it could have come from a dollhouse.

The big alien looked at the little alien. The little alien looked at the big alien. Each of them smiled a mysterious little smile at the other.

You might be wondering why they were smiling. You might be wondering what the purpose of all this was. But some questions are destined to be left unanswered... in the Tiny Zone.
