SJM Romance Week - Day 6 - Romantic Gestures
@sjmromanceweek When a grouchy man starts haunting her coffee shop, Nesta's romantic gestures come in the form of insults on his coffee cups.
A drizzle had misted the glass and as the world darkened, the yellow streetlights were blurs on the other side.
At the opening of the door, a brisk wind blew in. The man it carried with it was sharp-faced in a finely made dark pea-coat with an umber and orange patterned scarf tucked into it. It contrasted starkly with his red hair and pale complexion.
Emerie nudged Nesta in the ribs: target acquired.
He’d turned up a couple of days ago, coming after the evening rush and poor Gwyn had the displeasure of serving him. His first coffee had apparently been too cool despite being close to scalding. Then he’d summoned Emerie to wipe his table despite the evidence of the previous wiping still evaporating as he sat down. Nesta would handle him today. The best part of her day was to offer up the same rudeness that was given to her friends.
‘Yes?’
The man’s odd, amber eyes snapped from the signage to her. ‘Black coffee.’
Of course, he had needed to scan the entire menu for that difficult choice. Nesta ensured he could see how hot the water pouring from the machine was lest he complain that the temperature wasn’t warm enough.
‘Anything else?’
‘A little bit of customer service wouldn’t go amiss.’
Nesta shrugged one shoulder in response. ‘When you rediscover your manners.’
He stalked away to pounce on one of the vacant, highly-popular armchairs tucked away amongst the tall shelves. It was slow that evening; they were staying open later, trying to offer an alternative to bars for the non-drinkers, but it hadn’t quite taken off the ground.
There was no need to do it, but when his coffee was ready, rather than deliver it – as she might do for anybody else – Nesta called out, ‘Black coffee for the man with no manners.’
Emerie was wide-eyed. He’d reduced Gwyn to a stuttering mess when he’d pressed her for the details of suppliers for their snacks and refrigerated drinks. Emerie had simply called him a dick at the end of her shift when she got home.
To Nesta’s surprise, he pulled himself away from his book to saunter to the counter.
‘Thanks.’ His eyes glanced at her cleavage then noticed there was no name tag pinned there. There was a slight flush to his cheeks when he realised that he’d simply looked at her breasts.
‘Want my name to complain to the manager?’
His brows raised. ‘Not interested in your name.’
‘Oh, just my breasts.’
The man didn’t dignify her with a response, merely took his coffee then strolled back to his table, plucking a different book off the shelf as he went.
‘His name is Eris,’ supplied Emerie.
‘His name is a pain in my ass.’
As the evening wore on, the shop became more subdued. With only four people left – a group of three plus a solitary Eris – Nesta ushered Emerie home for the evening.
‘I don’t like you walking home alone so late,’ she complained.
Nesta held out Emerie’s jacket to help her into it. ‘Well, I like my dinner cooking when I return home, wife.’
‘You wish.’
‘Sometimes I do,’ she replied.
Emerie leaned back against the counter, arms folded. ‘It’s Gwyn’s turn to cook tonight.’
‘Get home, immediately.’
She gave a laugh and tossed her dark braid over her shoulder. ‘If there’s anything left of the house. If a fire truck is there when I get home, I’ll call.’
‘Such a beautiful woman but she cannot cook for shit,’ said Nesta with a shake of her head.
Emerie placed a hand on her heart. ‘Thank goodness she’s got us. See you at home. Be safe. Call me if you need.’
When the group left, Eris called her over with a beckon of his fingers as if she was a hound.
‘Can I get a camomile tea?’
Nesta gestured to the counter on the other side of the store. ‘Have your legs stopped working?’
Eris gave a pinched smile in return. ‘You don’t seem particularly rushed off your feet.’
That was true, she’d give him that. Nesta swept an imaginary cap through the air, collected his cup then set to brewing a tea for him – and one for her. She dimmed the lights in the coffee shop although the candles were still illuminating the tables and soft lights were on in the bookshop area. It had been an idea that had come as a result of burnout in corporate life. She’d climbed the ladder almost ruthlessly, soaring to the top, giving hour after hour to her job then her sister almost died in childbirth and she’d not seen Feyre for nearly her entire pregnancy. Work always took precedent. After that, it felt pointless. Her life revolved around work and she didn’t enjoy a single moment. Nobody ever woke up with the dream of spending twelve hours a day in an office. With the money she had been hoarding, Nesta lived her dream. Maybe it was a little dream, but she made the place she wanted; a cosy bookshop with good coffee and better cakes. It wasn’t a fortune maker, but Nesta loved it. Emerie and Gwyn worked with her to help out in its first few months of existence, but it was going well. Nesta had made something that she was proud of.
When she carried the tea over, Eris had swapped books. She knew that merging a coffee shop with a book shop would result in patrons reading while they drank, but it wasn’t a library – so she told him as much.
‘What if I chose one book and only read that when I’m in here?’
‘Again, not a library.’
A shrug was offered, but that shrug gave her pause because she’d been there before, been that person without a spark. As Nesta went through the motions of cleaning out the coffee machine and washing up the last few mugs, her eyes continually flickered to Eris. He hardly read the book in his hands. His eyes kept drifting to the wall then he’d skip a page or two and try to focus like his heart wasn’t in it. Not once did Nesta see his attention stray to his phone. He was somewhere else – a bad break-up maybe plaguing his thoughts.
Taking pity, Nesta plated up the last few sugary items – the three of them wouldn’t shrivel up and die if they didn’t polish off the stock for once – and set them down on his table with a paper bag.
‘Yours, if you want.’
‘Oh.’
‘Thank you, Nesta. You are welcome. There, manners.’
There was an elfin quality to his face like the bones of his face was sharper, more pointed than others. ‘Your name is Nesta?’
‘No, the other person working right now.’
Her sarcasm usually cut the skin, but Eris snickered. ‘Thanks, Nesta.’
By the time he left, Emerie was blowing up her phone with calls asking why she wasn’t home yet along with a picture of the charred dinner Gwyn had made then a message asking her to pick something up on the way home for them to eat. She’d stayed open later than usual because she felt too guilty to kick Eris out when his mind seemed occupied elsewhere. He’d thanked her again before he left along with returning his plate and mug to the counter – and a hefty tip that she was not expecting.
***
Eris came in every single day that week. He’d stand, stormy-faced in the queue, awaiting his black coffee. Depending how snappy or short he was, depended what name she scrawled on his cup. Grumpy man in the coat. Man who looks like a drowned rat. Mr. Miserable. He never took much offence by it, just raised his brows, paid for his drink then stalked over to the books to sit alone. By Friday, Nesta began preparing his coffee the moment he came in from the rain. When his lips parted, she pressed the cup into his hands. Eris scanned the writing on the receipt.
Mr Can’t-even-crack-a-smile-on-a-Friday.
‘I’m going to touch your newest books with greasy fingers.’
‘You wouldn’t dare,’ she said.
His lips quirked. ‘Try me.’
When he retreated to his favourite corner, Emerie cleared her throat. ‘Excuse me.’
‘You may be excused,’ replied Nesta.
She rolled up a tea towel and whipped Nesta across the thigh. ‘What’s that? Were you flirting?’
Her jaw dropped. ‘That was not flirting. That was me warning a customer that if he ruins a book, I will beat him with it.’
Emerie gave a slow nod, not believing it for a moment. ‘I wish I had that shield. I go home feeling bad if a customer is rude. Gwyn cries. You grow more powerful.’
‘When they ask to speak to the manager, I hit them with the uno reverse card.’
Once the coffee shop had cleared out, Nesta was left alone again with Eris. Like the previous nights, he was unsettled. No book truly held his focus.
‘Camomile tea and a brownie. If you get crumbs on the books, I will bill you for the damage.’
‘This music is awful,’ he said, not tearing his attention from the novel – although she’d been watching and this was the most focused that he’d been all evening so it was likely a façade.
‘Take it up with the manager,’ she replied.
‘I wish I could,’ he muttered.
While he drank, Nesta changed the window display. New stock had arrived that morning so she was eager to have it on show ready for the morning. Through it all, Eris murmured that a book was wonky or the colour schemes clashed.
‘Would you like to do it?’
‘Not particularly,’ he replied, sipping at his tea – but for once there was some life behind his eyes, a slight brightness that hadn’t been there all week. ‘What time does this place close?’
Nesta mimed looking at an imaginary watch on her wrist. ‘Oh, about seventeen minutes ago.’
Eris screwed up his face. ‘I thought you’d be eager to kick me out.’
‘It’s a Friday night. You’re a young, presumably single, handsome man. If this is the only place you have to go on a Friday night then I feel bad to kick you out.’
‘Well, I sound pathetic.’ He drained his tea. ‘Sorry. Your boss won’t be mad?’
‘Yeah. She’s a bitch. Don’t mess with her.’
Surprising her entirely, Eris asked if there was anything he could help with to ease the lock up process. She’d already put the day’s takings in the safe, so she handed him a cloth and spray to wipe down the tables again. Dutifully, he set to the task.
‘You after a job?’
Eris gave one low chuckle. ‘I have a job.’
This was a man that she simply could not work out. From the exterior, he seemed sour and irritable, but he took her sniped words and parried them back.
Even when Nesta locked up the door, Eris remained nearby, watching over her shoulder as revellers began to emerge for the night and stumbled down the pavements.
‘Can I give you a ride?’ He gestured to the rain then pointed to a car worth more than any she’d ever sat in before. It was a massive, gas-guzzling beast that could plough down anything in its path. If the four horsemen of the apocalypse upgraded from horses to vehicles, it would be this one.
‘I don’t make a habit of getting in cars with strange men. Goodnight.’
It was a twenty-minute walk, fifteen if she moved her legs a little quicker to avoid the drunken idiots staggering around the streets. Nesta zipped her coat to her chin then steeled herself for the walk.
Eris turned his car around and she heard it roaring behind her.
It crawled along the road beside her, keeping pace with her walking.
‘If you won’t accept a ride then I can at least make sure you get home safely this way.’
‘You’d be so cut up if something happened to me,’ she scoffed. ‘We’re strangers.’
‘True,’ Eris admitted, an arm resting on the wound-down window. ‘But it's difficult to find a decent cup of coffee around here.’
Each night, Eris had given a generous tip to the pot which was at odds with his prickly demeanour. He could continue to come and be miserable if a fat tip was pushed into the jar at the end of it all.
Nesta made a tutting noise. ‘Will you stop this? You make me look like a woman of the night, driving along beside me and calling out the window.’
‘Ah, a jezebel,’ he said with a laugh. ‘It’s pouring. I’ll drop you off. Get in.’
She slipped her phone from her pocket and hastily flung a badly typed text into the group chat telling them she was in the car with Eris and shared her location. At the sensation of the heated seats, Nesta eased out a satisfied noise. The car was not what she expected on the inside. A blanket was strewn across the back seats and it was covered in muddy pawprints and dog hair. More of it was on the upholstery.
‘You have a dog?’
‘Uh. Yeah. I did,’ he replied, face tightening. ‘Tell me the way.’
‘I’ll give you five stars if you don’t talk to me,’ she quipped but the sadness had already leaked into his expression like those first couple of nights that he’d come to the shop. Maybe not a break up at all.
In a silence that was only interrupted by her directions, Eris drove her home. He was a good driver, never speeding, never taking risks despite the engine that thrummed with power. At the house, he pulled up.
‘I’ll see you tomorrow.’
Nesta nodded. ‘Sure. Eight 'til eight tomorrow, but we have shorter hours on Sundays.’
‘Thanks for the heads up.’
Her fingers stilled on the door handle. ‘Are you alright? You’re spending every evening until close in a coffee shop. Don’t you have a home to go to?’
‘Yeah. I don’t want to be there,’ he said without expanding on it. ‘Goodnight Nesta.’
***
That weekend, they continued their strange dance. Nesta called out orders for the dude with the stick up his ass, the guy who needs to get a library card, and the neat freak who keeps re-arranging the books. Each time, Eris sauntered to the counter or waved his hand through the air expecting table service, not at all bothered by her insults.
‘You’re definitely flirting,’ murmured Emerie as she hung up her apron for the afternoon.
‘I’m harassing him,’ countered Nesta.
Gwyn shook her head. ‘He seems to like it.’
Eris was sprawled out in a chair, shoes off, socked-feet resting on the chair opposite as he read. A cookie had chunks bitten out of it sporadically as he remembered its existence. He looked well and truly at home in the alcove cut into the wall. It was Nesta’s favourite part of the shop – the main reason she’d purchased the building. They’d pinned a lattice to the wall and wound fake ivy and fairy lights through it to make it something special.
‘Are we kicking him out to close?’
Nesta chewed on her lip. ‘I feel guilty every time. He’s got nowhere else to go.’
‘It’s not a shelter for waifs and strays. It’s a business,’ said Emerie.
Sunday was meant to be a chill out day with the coffee shop closing just after lunch to at least give Nesta a little bit of free time away from it. Eris seemed far too cosy to turf him out. She convinced Em and Gwyn to go on ahead in the gloomy weather and she’d catch up. Then, Nesta plopped down on the stool beside Eris.
‘Closing time?’
‘I’m afraid so.’
Eris heaved a sigh as he closed the book.
‘You know you can buy the books,’ she said, raising a brow. ‘That’s how we make money.’
‘Sorry. Tell your boss I enjoy the ambience too much.’
She gave him a half-sigh. ‘I am the boss.’
He reached back to the shelf to slide the book – a fantasy one – back into its place. ‘I was wondering why the manager put the grumpiest member of staff on every single day.’
Nesta choked on a laugh. ‘Me, grumpy? You have an aura like a sad, wet cat around you. It sucks me in like a black hole. That’s why I stay away.’
Eris slipped his long feet back into his shoes and tied up the laces. He wasn’t particularly dressed down for a weekend. All of his clothes screamed money.
‘So, what’s the story? Why do you spend every minute here?’ Nesta scanned him from head to toe. ‘Bad break up? Don’t want to pay for heating at your own home?’
‘I just don’t want to be there.’
Under her piercing stare, Eris crumbled. He pulled his phone from his pocket and slid it across to her. She was expecting a gorgeous woman there or a cute couple’s photo. Instead, Nesta was met with a massive, black dog with masses of shiny fur.
‘My boy,’ said Eris, wincing as he spoke. ‘Fifteen years old. Put to sleep last week.’
‘Oh. I’m sorry.’
‘It’s so quiet at home. I can’t bear to get rid of his bed – or that blanket in the car.’ Eris shook his head. ‘I know, just a dog. Get over it.’
Nesta clenched her teeth together then, ‘That’s not true. Fifteen years is a long time to love something. It’s natural to grieve a pet. Sorry for insulting you for the last few days. If I knew there was a reason for this mood, I’d have left you be.’
‘It’s alright. It was fun. I just needed a place that was open late so I didn’t have to go home. Then I found you. Your insults stopped me feeling sorry for myself.’
His words, though not deep, still had her heart giving a flutter. ‘I’ve still got to kick you out, I’m afraid.’
Eris dipped his chin then buttoned up his coat. He carried his own tray to the sink and loaded the items onto the dishwasher because he was practised enough with the closing routine.
‘Black coffee tomorrow for the dog lover?’
‘Ask your manager when you can get the night off.’
‘Drop me home and you can talk to her.’

Hiya! How about a Larissa x fem vampire teacher fic where there's like a shortage of fresh blood, so larissa offers her own blood and at first reader is like no wtf I can't do it but they start getting a little hungrier and they eventually give in. Like they don't kill larissa or anything like that they just drain her a little and then take care of her afterwards? Bringing her cookies and putting her to bed, and Larissa reassures them that they're not a monster and stuff?
Hey Anon!
This idea was super fun to write! Thank you so much for requesting it. ☺️

A/N: I’m slowly working through the many pieces I’ve started writing. Keep sending through more requests, I love writing your ideas! They’re so creative.
———————————————————
“What could Larissa want?” Your nerves are high as you walk through the corridors. Your boss, Principal Weems, had asked you to stop by her office after school earlier today and now that classes had finished, you can’t help the anxiety settling in your stomach. It doesn’t help that you’re having to limit your blood intake due to a shortage of fresh blood from your suppliers. You swore you’d never harm someone for blood but lately, your patience has been running thin. Your fangs have been so sensitive, everytime you pass literally anyone else in the corridor, you keep getting an overwhelming urge to drink from them. Well there’s that and the blood bond that comes with it. Whenever you drink blood straight from someone’s body, your fangs will only ever crave them.
Taking a deep breath, you knock on the wooden door to her office. “Come in.” Larissa’s soft English accent sounds from the other side of the door. Your shaking hands manage to open the door, stepping inside before closing it behind you. “Ah Miss Y/L/N, thank you for coming. Please, take a seat.” She offers a warm smile, extending her hand towards an empty seat by her desk. God, the scent of her was intoxicating. “What did you need to speak to me about?” You were grateful for the soft leather chair that caught you as your legs dropped you halfway through sitting down.
“Well as you know, we were originally only hiring you as a temporary post while Mrs Sayer was on maternity leave. However, she has decided to resign to be a stay at home mum. The students adore having you as their teacher so, Ms Y/L/N, would you like to be a permanent member of the Nevermore staff?” Shock falls upon you as you hear her words. “Yes, of course. Thank you.” You can’t help the excitement in your veins as you say this. Larissa grins, sitting back in her chair, raising her head approvingly. “I was hoping you’d say that. Thank you Miss Y/L/N that’ll be all.” She says, offering out her hand for you to shake.
The moment you stand, black spots cloud your vision, a cold sweat flushing over your body. A tingling sensation floods your veins as you grab her hand. “Miss Y/L/N, you look dreadful.” Your already pale complexion had lost the minimal colour it had to it, making you whiter than a sheet of paper. Your fangs throb at the connection of your skin on hers. “I’m ok, don’t worry about me.” Take her. Drink from her. Make her your blood bond. The primal vampire urge sounds clearly in the forefront of your mind. “Y/N. Sit. Down.” Larissa’s tone deepens, and you obey, sitting back down as your head spins.
“Good. Now what’s going on?” She stands up, walking over to you. Bringing a seat closer to yours, you tense at the close proximity, your fangs throbbing to make her your blood bond. Taking a deep breath, you try to regain some composure. “There’s a shortage of blood from my suppliers so I’ve been having to limit my blood intake. Let’s just say my body isn’t handling it well.” Larissa purses her lips, deep in thought after hearing your words. Your hands, now damp with sweat, rub awkwardly over your pants, hoping the friction of fabric on your skin will help ground you. “And you can’t just drink from someone?”
You let off a slight chuckle at her words. “Physically? Yes, I very much can. If anything, it’s been getting harder and harder not to. Everytime I’m near anyone, my fangs start throbbing, it’s rather excruciating. But I swore I wouldn’t take someone’s blood for my own well-being. It’s not fair on them.” A slight pause falls over the room before she says her next words. “Use mine.” Your head darts up to her, your eyes filled with shock. “I can’t. If I drink from someone, it causes a blood bond. If I use yours, I can’t use any other blood. I can’t drag you into that.”
Of course, you wanted a blood bond with her. She had the most intoxicating scent out of anyone in the school. The fact you’d get to see her everyday definitely wasn’t a negative either. You had always had a soft spot for your boss, how could you not. She has the most gorgeous smile and her infectious personality is nothing but genuine.
“You wouldn’t be dragging me into anything, I’m offering. If it means I get to see you more often, then I will gladly be your blood bond.” She says, her hand brushing back stray hairs from her shoulder, exposing her neck. The sight of her soft skin, unmarked and pale, made your fangs send a sharp pain of desire through your body. Darting your eyes to her cerulean ones, you take a deep breath. “Are you sure? There’s no going back from this.” Your voice was soft with uncertainty as you ask this, your heart racing. She nods. “I’m sure.” Moving closer to her, your fangs ache for the taste of her.
Placing a soft kiss on her neck, you mumble against her skin. “I feel you’re horribly romanticising this Larissa.” A soft chuckle escapes her. “Are you complaining?” You shake your head before gently sinking your fangs through her skin, a sharp breath escaping her at the initial puncture. The moment you taste her, you can’t help the soft moan that falls off your lips. Her blood was divine, the sweet liquid trickling down your throat.
Extracting yourself from her skin, you swallow, receiving instant relief from your blood malnutrition. Reverting your gaze back to Larissa who gives you a reassuring smile. “Come on.” You stand up, offering her your hand which she sceptically takes. You lead her through the door on the side of her office, separating it from her private quarters. Leading her over to her couch by the fireplace, you help her sit down. “How are you feeling?” Your voice is full of worry as you crouch down in front of her. She lets out a small chuckle. “Like I just ran two marathons back to back.” You have to suppress your grin as she says this. Reaching into your back pocket, you pull out a block of chocolate. Breaking off a row, you offer it out to her, which she gratefully accepts. “I was saving this for tomorrow, it helps the headache Wednesday always manages to give me.”
Larissa’s soft chuckle fills your ears, making your knees weak. “At least I’m not the only one she gives them too.” You can’t help your grin, shaking your head. “Not at all.” Standing up, you quickly grab her a glass of water. “Here, drink. You need it.” She takes it, desperately trying to stop the lightheaded feeling over-taking her. Sitting on the couch next to her, she all but falls weakly onto your chest. Your arm instinctively wraps around her, your free hand reaching up to gently stroke through her hair. You can’t help the guilt burdening you as you look down over her. “I’m so sorry.” You murmur, your voice soft, barely louder than a whisper. She lifts her head to face your, placing her lips softly on your cheek. “Don’t be. It’s not your fault. I know what I’ve gotten myself into. Please, Y/N, don’t beat yourself up over this. I did it because I can’t have my favourite teacher feeling under the weather. I care about you a lot.”
A soft smile pulls at your lips as you hear this. “I’m your favourite?” Her grin is infectious. “Well, do you see me forming a blood bond with anyone else?” You can’t help the chuckle that escapes you. Shaking your head, you grin. “Well, no…”
“Exactly. Besides, it’s already done. You’re stuck with me now.” She chuckles, pressing her head firmer against your chest. A soft smile is glued to your face as you gently place your lips to the top of her head. “Thank you.”

summer beach house pt 1- tommy shelby x oc
A/N: lil blurb for a new au (lol) for tommy x ali, aka the summer beach house au! hope you guys enjoy.
Tumblr media
Tommy's attention turned quickly from his newspaper when he heard the front door of his Manhattan condo slam shut. His brow furrowed as he heard light footsteps scamper past the dining room and trail down the hallway towards his daughters bedrooms. "Hi, Daddy!" Twelve year old Marisol, affectionately known as Mari, chirped as she closed her bedroom door quickly.
"Morning," he grumbled as the front door cracked open again and he heard his wife, Alistair walk through the door, on the phone with someone from her bakery. "Yes, I am aware we are out of the espresso chips and I've told you a thousand times our supplier discontinued them, so we may have to cut the espresso chip cookies from the menu," she explained, an annoyed tone to her voice. Tommy smirked, raising an eyebrow as she walked into the dining room, clad in a matching hot pink Pilates set. Tommy set his paper down, cradling his chin between his thumb and forefinger as he watched her pace back and forth, curves on full display in her activewear. She turned to look at him and blushed, his gaze hungry and wanting. "Celeste, I gotta go, we'll talk later," Ali said, hanging up the phone. She set her phone down on the solid oak buffet and crossed her arms over her chest. "Mr. Shelby," she smirked. "Where in hell did you go looking this fucking good this early in the morning, hm?" he asked, standing up and stalking over towards her, arms caging her in against the wood of the buffet. She giggled as Tommy nuzzled against her neck, biting the flesh gently, earning a squeak from her. "Thomas, the girls will be in here any second," she giggled, making no attempt to swat him away. "Still need to shower though, hm?" he asked her, a naughty twinkle in his eye. "Yes, but, Thomas, you're already dressed," Ali pointed out, noting his dark blue suit she loved him in. "Can always get dressed again," he rasped, pressing a kiss to her lips.
The girls bounded in the dining room, ready for their breakfast of cereal, toast and eggs. "Ew, Daddy, get off Mommy!" Lexi, their younger daughter told them, wrinkling her nose at their affection. At ten, she didn't quite get romance. They both knew she'd be there soon. "But she looks so pretty this morning," Tommy counter-argued, earning an eye roll from both his daughters. "Will you sit with us this morning?" Mari asked them, eyes wide in anticipation. Tommy and Ali eyed each other, and Tommy mentally flushed his desire of a shared shower with his wife down the drain. "Of course," Tommy said. How could he deny them anything?
"Girls, Frances is going to start packing some of your things, we leave for the beach house in two weeks," Tommy said when they were halfway through their breakfast. School had let out last week for the summer, and Tommy had a few things to finish up in the city before he could afford to go down to South Carolina for the rest of the summer. Ali was ready. Ready for a break. Ready for a break from the city, the bakery, their city life. The girls cheered, excited to be back at their beach house, back with their beach house friends. Swimming all summer and eating some of the best food.
Ali smiled at Tommy, who bumped her knee against his with a wide smile on his face. It would be a summer to remember.

How to (Not) Properly Prepare Mandrakes
cw: mandrakes were definitely harmed in the writing of this story.
Neville led her into the greenhouse, his back broad and almost too wide for the tiny door creaking open at his touch.
“You’d think after all these years Sprout would have enlarged these doors,” Pansy mused. Of course, she had no problem walking through, despite her platform shoes. Heels might not be practical as a Healer, but she refused to give up any advantage she could take for a little more height.
Still, standing next to Neville and looking up at his amused smile, Pansy still felt she could use several more inches. Letting her eyes drag down unabashedly down his chest, muscled even beneath his gardening apron, and trim waist, she ended her inspection at his crotch.
She could do with several more inches, indeed.
“Pansy.” His tone caught her attention, and she looked up to see his smile had widened, the flash of his teeth white against his tan skin. “I didn’t say it earlier, but you’re looking good.”
Well, well, well.
“You’ve certainly grown up decently well yourself, Longbottom,” she teased. Who knew that underneath that bumbling, shy exterior existed this delicious man?
He blushed, grasping the back of his neck in a nervous gesture that gave her the distinct desire of teasing him some more. That wasn’t why she was here though. With a short shake of her head, she brought her attention back to the task at hand and the reason why she’d approached Neville Longbottom in the first place.
“So these are them, then?” she asked, indicating the potted plants on the table in front of them.
His hand dropped and he turned to face the mandrakes, his chest lifting and hands spanning to rest against the wood as confidence filled his voice. “Yes, I pulled these particular pots after our letters.”
Pansy narrowed her eyes as she inspected the plants. “These are fully mature mandrakes?” They looked smaller than she’d expected, not that she had handled the plants in any recent memory. The last time had been during their Hogwarts days, more than a decade past now.
“Only just. They’ll be moving in with one another any day now,” he affirmed.
Pansy hoped that her theories would prove correct. If the efficacy of their potions were indeed greatly improved upon the freshness of the mandrakes, then she planned to make an offer Neville and the Hogwarts board couldn’t refuse. St. Mungo’s current suppliers weren’t as particular on quality as they liked to claim, and no amount of cajoling on her end seemed to change the outcome.
“Well, then, shall we?” She held her hand out, waiting for the signature earmuffs she remembered from her childhood.
Neville looked at her askance. “What, you want to harvest them now?”
“Whyever not? I want to see the mandrakes for myself and see how you handle them. Isn’t that why you asked me to come up here?” This time it was Pansy’s turn to be confused. His last missive had invited her out to her alma mater at her soonest convenience.
“Well, I just thought you’d like to see the plants, then have a spot of tea and catch up.” He flushed a rich pink the moment the words left his lips. Pansy thought he never looked more adorable.
“I see. Owls not quite immediate enough for a conversation, Longbottom?” Salazar, he was fun to tease.
Pansy risked a glance at the hand propped on the desk. No ring. She hadn’t heard much about Longbottom before her current project and had assumed he’d gone off and married one of his Hufflepuff friends–Abbott, or maybe Bones. She might have even considered Granger given the way he’d panted after her when they were students. Too bad that particular Gryffindor was too busy dancing around Draco, neither of them fooling anybody with their attempt at secrecy.
“I didn’t think getting your hands dirty was an option.”
Merlin.
He said that sentence without any attempt at hiding his interest, his voice dropping at the idea of prim and proper Pansy Parkinson getting soiled. At least, that’s how she interpreted his change in tone.
“That’s what gloves are for,” she quipped. Once again, she looked around expectantly at the well-organized greenhouse. She didn’t see any gloves, or earmuffs.
“Well, that’s unfortunate because I prefer to go without. We also did away with earmuffs years ago,” he explained. Pansy opened her mouth to reply, but he beat her to it. “Let me demonstrate.”
Taking his cherry wand in hand, he intoned, “Sonus exsurdo.”
Her eyes widened at the immediate loss of sound. Delighting in her response, he raised both hands to clap straight into her face. Nothing. With another wave of his wand, sound was restored.
“That’s so much better than those cursed earmuffs!” Pansy had always hated wearing them. They only came in two garish colors and left indents in her hair.
“I do have some on hand just in case,” he admitted, “but I’ve never had need of them after learning that little charm. If you really want, I can also get you some gloves.”
Pansy considered his offer. She really did want to see the process first hand since she barely remembered her own experience. She also had a feeling Neville had his own techniques. “I do want to help you harvest them, but I’ll try it your way.”
He quirked a brow at her, and she elaborated, “No gloves.” She could just schedule a manicure for later that evening. His delighted laugh had her stomach flipping over, and she decided she was glad of her decision.
A short few minutes later, both of them deafened and a second apron procured for Pansy, they stood ready to get to work. Grasping the base of the plant firmly, Neville tugged upward in one smooth motion. As he did so, Pansy couldn’t help but admire the biceps that swelled with his effort. Her admiration halted at the first fling of dirt into her face.
The mandrake let out a wail that would have no doubt killed them on the spot without their charms. The monstrous little thing still had acne scars from its juvenile stage. Squealing and wiggling its arms, it seemed to beg for a return to its dark haven. Instead, Neville pinned the mandrake to the table top, raised a slender knife, and sliced straight through where the stem met the root. The mandrake went still. Blood pooled around the wound.
The suddenness of the act shocked Pansy to the core. She knew mandrakes were sliced and boiled in a variety of ways for use, but she hadn’t ever witnessed the actual moment of one’s death.
He proceeded to clean up the ends of the leaves, setting them aside to use elsewhere. He repeated the entire process with the remainder of the mandrakes. Thankfully, he tasked Pansy with uprooting the mandrakes while he handled the knife, and they set a steady rhythm. They were done with the table of pots after only an hour of little interruption.
The moment they stopped moving and Pansy set aside the last container, she flattened her palms on the table and willed them to stop trembling. No wonder the school never allowed students to harvest the mandrakes. They were just plants, but they were also far too humanoid for the act to feel as emotionless as she’d assumed.
So absorbed was she in her attempt to bring herself under control, that she startled at the return of her hearing.
“Everything alright, Pansy?” He sounded concerned, and Pansy looked up to meet his wide eyes with her own. They were hazel, little flecks of moss green in the light brown. His eyes were pretty. He looked worried.
“Yes, I’m sorry…that was just more than I expected.” She breathed in deep to steady herself.
He nodded sympathetically and, to her surprise once more, settled both hands on her shoulders and squeezed in reassurance.
His hands.
She dropped her gaze to look, fully expecting them to be covered with dirt and, in turn, staining her blouse.
His hands were spotless.
“How?”
Neville laughed, and she realized her mouth had dropped open. She shut it with an audible click and scowled.
“I have a little charm for the dirt, too,” he said, dimples deep in his cheeks.
He beckoned her hands forward. Once she raised them, he muttered and the dirt fell away as if it had never been there. Wandless. Impressive.
“You are full of surprises, arent you?” They shared a grin at her question.
“You’ve barely seen anything,” he replied with a wink.
“Longbottom…”
His moment of confidence faltered at her drawl of his name, replaced with a blush so deep it made his earlier one look pale in comparison.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to–”
She cut him off before he could misunderstand. “If you don’t show me more of these surprises, I just might cancel our plans right now.”
Pansy looked up at him coquettishly, biting her lip and hoping he was just as easily turned on as she already was. His gulp was apparent, and she held back her grin of triumph.
“How long has it been?” she asked. Pansy knew it was nosy, but she was genuinely curious.
“How long has what been?” he responded, confused.
Tilting her head and continuing to look up through her curtain of her bangs, she placed a hand on his belt and tugged in a manner that left absolutely no room for doubt.
“Oh!” Lips in an innocent little ‘o’, Neville tilted his head back to stare at the ceiling as he thought. If he wasn’t so tall, Pansy would place her teeth around the apple of his throat and swipe it with her tongue. “With someone, or…?”
Pansy smirked at the vision of Neville Longbottom wanking amidst the greenery of his greenhouses.
“It’s been a bit,” he admitted. “I’ve been so busy with students and keep such early hours that I end up going to bed before most bars even open.”
“But alone…” Pansy’s curiosity would kill her one day, but she needed to know.
Neville glanced over at the prepared mandrakes before answering her. “This morning, actually.”
“Wait, why did you look at the plants?” she demanded. Pansy had always known of his uncanny skills in Herbology, but she had never dared consider a more carnal application.
He stared at her as she fidgeted, blinking a few times in the silence. “Are you asking because you’re just curious?”
“I’d like to fuck, and if plants are involved, I want to know first,” Pansy said bluntly.
His cough didn’t cover up his laugh at all. “In that case, you ought to know that I frequently use plants to heighten certain sensations and induce hallucinations.”
Pansy looked between him and the mandrakes, brow furrowed. “Oh. That’s more elaborate than what I imagined.”
He looked like he was struggling to keep a straight face. “Which was?”
“I was thinking of something more along the lines of a cumsock.”
He really did have a lovely laugh. He threw his head back with the force of it, wiping away the tears from his eyes once he regained control of himself. “There are varieties that lend themselves well to that purpose, but I like to have more fun than that. I’ve cultivated specimens to do…more.”
“I have nothing else scheduled for today since I thought harvesting would take most of the evening,” Pansy announced.
She wasn’t usually so forward without a few drinks in the half light of whatever date location she usually required beforehand. Neville had her nearly stamping her feet in impatience–she wanted his pants off yesterday. She nearly swooned when he cast locking and silencing charms.
“Luckily, I can say the same today.” He turned to pick up one of the freshly plucked mandrake leaves. “I know you’re aware of the medicinal uses, but have you ever tried smoking it?”
Pansy had not, but she was not at all against trying as long as it was with Neville. She snapped her fingers and conjured a small flame, a trick that had his eyebrows jumping up into his hairline in appreciation. Shaking the same hand extinguished the fire.
“Fancy.”
He held out his hand, and she took it, swallowing heavily at the way his long fingers curled around hers. Strong. Deft. She imagined them inside of her, plunging deep and pressing just there.
She was keen to see what all he had hidden in his seemingly innocent garden beds, with or without his handy little cleaning charm. As long as Pansy experienced those hands for herself, she’d willingly butcher a hundred mandrakes. She’d even wear those fluffy monstrosities.
“Lead on, Longbottom.”

SO, mandrakes. Another plant. I guess I'm just into flora at the moment? Mandrakes can be kind of yikes depending on how I handle it, so I hope I made their use more exciting than frightening.
