LOL omg hi. this is indeed a blast from the past but i'm also hugely intrigued by this conspiracy cos the author of atyd did leave a (very nice!) comment and bookmarked that fic back when i wrote it in 2017... in fact i think she was the first person who ever commented on my fic. tbh i never read atyd so i don't know what specifically you're referring to re: characterization or certain nuances but i'm sure that my characterizations were heavily inspired by gen fluorescentgrey and eve montparnasse and a number of other writers so idk if it's fair to take credit for anything.

@yeats-infection/fluorescentgrey’s jump into the fire is one of the first webgott fics i ever read, and it permanently restructured my neurological pathways. it’s absolutely one of those stories that cleaved my life into two discrete eras, a Before and an After. this is THE premier webgott modern au to me.

web is doing an american literature phd, lieb is a geology student and also a rock climbing enthusiast (most of which serves the modern setting but all of which feels 100% canon). at a party one night they share what is deemed, and aptly described as, The Best Kiss Ever.

the author expertly handles side characters, which is so much fun in a fandom like band of brothers where there is such a multitude of characters (the baberoe b-plot, and the exploration of the babe/lieb friendship, are glorious. i will never, as long as i live, recover from the I lieb you text exchange). the writing is so rich and vivid that i wish i could make a home inside of it, par for the course in a fluorescentgrey fic. sensory detail and crisp character analysis and economy of language all come together in some kind of holy trinity of storytelling. here’s an excerpt that gives you some idea and, i hope, kicks your interest up to 100; the rest is simply unmissable.

“Lieb,” Webster said. His own voice echoing in the cavern of his skull. Echoing basically out of another place and time such that at first he did not quite realize it was himself that had said it. Liebgott cracked an eyelid. In the purplish light the redness in the white of his eye seemed a deep blue. He pressed his tongue against his canine tooth, as though he were going to let the characteristic smirk stretch across his face but had thought better of it at the last minute. It was immediately clear that he understood something that Webster realized later he had been trying to say, even if he himself wasn’t exactly sure what it was. The entire world sharpened like a pencil into this narrow point. The space between them which was shrinking. There was a kernel — an atom — of raw, pure truth at the center of this space and they each reached for it, towards each other. And the sun sank its last drop of light into the molten core of the world. Thence the best kiss ever.

Hell or High Water

There's one fic in this category and it's Hell or High Water (@mottlemoth, 250K+, WIP, E). I know you're already reading it but if you've somehow just emerged from a year-long coma and this is your first contact with the internet  since your miraculous recovery, then please let me introduce you to Hell or High Water. This fic is a world unto itself - unreal l how many lines from this beast I think about on a regular basis.

Spectacular sci-fi where Ed is an engineer on a spaceship and STE/DE is the ship's AI. Poignant and tender and laden with moments that will take your breath away.

Ed is a glassblower and Stede is an unhappily married "straight" man who starts coming to the hot shop to watch him work; their relationship in this one is so organic and perfectly written. Already can't wait for the re-read.

Like HOHW, you're probably already reading this one, but if not then you should be! Every word of hype is deserved; this fic is so joyful and healing and tender, with a perfectly-in-character ensemble crew and the sweetest friends-to-lovers slow burn I've ever read.

Adorably awkward single-dad Stede hires heartwarmingly perfect nanny Ed to help with the kids, and it's as funny and sweet and satisfying as a great rom-com.

Metal dectorists AU! An unusual take on "Ed is the master of a world Stede has always dreamed of exploring," which is fuckin' metal detecting, that's right. Very fun and heartwarming.

New-bookstore-owner Stede and the hot guy who runs the bar next door. Digs into some of the thorniness of Stede's marriage/sexuality crisis, which leads to mounting UST and a searingly hot, planets-colliding payoff.

This fic breaks my heart but I just can't stop coming back to it - Ed goes to a molly house to try to get Stede out of his system. Guess who is also there, trying to process things? Achingly hot and angsty, with some excellent OCs to boot.

Delightfully funny and sweet fake-boyfriends trope and jealous misunderstandings when Stede's ex shows up and Ed helps Stede avoid him.

⬥Cabin Pressure by entanglednow -- 6K, E

Flaming hot "consequences of 'platonic' friends sleeping in the same bed" one-shot.

⬥Wayfaring by @justkeeptrekkin -- 35K, E 

Another deserved fandom classic, Ed and Stede marooned together on an island, a gorgeous slow unfolding of the beautiful life they build together.

⬥If You Were Mine to Keep by Pamplemousse (@mysterybees) -- 75K+ (WIP), E

Incredibly sweet, romantic forced marriage story where Ed is made to marry an aristocrat and Stede agrees to be the one to marry him. Instant chemistry and a powerful friendship that slowly blossoms into more. Pure loveliness.

Fun Sex

My all-time favorite genre: zany sexual chemistry and adventures in sex positivity. "Erotic friendship," maybe? Whatever you call it, it's the best. Started compiling recs for this section and realized I had multiple fics for every author, so I'm going to recommend authors instead!

❖afterism (@onlylostphysics) -- creator of the exquisite, paradigm-shifting "kissing is what lovers do" series, an S1 canon-parallel in which Ed and Stede become friends with benefits from day one. Pure perfection, every installment is hot and beautiful as a standalone or in series but I particularly love elegant and restrained (Ed orchestrates his own ravishment under the guise of teaching Stede how to handle a hostage), and all dressed up (fingering and playful orgasm denial and Ed being head over heels in love, just mind-meltingly hot and romantic).

❖alsaurus (@ofmd-alsaurus) -- another who can do no wrong in my book. Every fic is so sweet and sexy and uniquely hilarious; I'm particularly partial to Good Habits (Stede has an unusual way of getting off, Ed likes to watch) and There's No Accounting for Taste (Ed tries to set a sexy trap and things go off the rails). 

❖Jimsnose (alivamae) -- snappy and hot and always deliciously unpredictable, I love everything they've written but especially The Theater of Fear (Stede helps Ed cope with the guilt of nearly killing him through the healing magic of roleplay)(seriously though this fic is so delightful I just got pulled into another re-read) and Golden Teachers (Ed introduces Stede to magic mushrooms)(I am a sucker for low-stakes recreational drug use in fics and this one is exquisite, now with searingly-hot sequel Penis Envy).

❖heartroots (@bonesofyourheart) -- another master of the hot/funny/sweet/endearing/hot again genre blending, especially Aphrodisiac (Stede struggles with finishing too quickly and tries a magic potion to help him last longer) and If You're Too Shy, Then Let Me (Stede gets an "accidental" front-row seat to Ed's alone time).

House Specials

⬥Touching Your Goodness -- E, 14K

Ed and Stede are back together but not yet Back Together when two strangers come into the mix and make them both jealous - mutual pining and comedic misunderstandings with bonus POTC (Sparrow/Norrington) crossover.

Smut and fluff after Stede gets cursed by some famously haunted treasure. Just in time for the Halloween season!

⬥The Healing Kind -- 22K, E

Post-S1 reunion where Ed is depressed and self-destructive, and Izzy teams up with Lucius and Mary to get him back together with Stede: angst to hurt/comfort to fluff to smut.

⬥Such as They May Be -- 6K, E

THROBB FORTNIGHT Fic Recs: Days 1-5

Day 1: Canon Divergence

This is a wonderful No Defection/”Betrayal” AU where Theon never went to Pyke in the first place. There are several things that I especially love about this fic:

1) Often in these types of AUs, it’s taken for granted that a Theon who’s chosen to stay with Robb (or never had the chance to choose) will be happy with that decision and that without actively divided loyalties, all the other issues will just…go away somehow. This fic, in this a very well-drawn couple of scenes, examines and acknowledges how that’s unlikely, how Robb and Theon, despite loving each other, have a lot of situational issues between them as well as interpersonal problems with communication and empathy, and things aren’t likely to just go away.

2) That said, the love and trust between them is so very genuine, and even when they argue and hide from each other, they cannot help but be tender with each other.

3) Excellent and satisfying characterizations of both! Robb is young and vulnerable in some ways, and needs Theon’s support, but also stubborn and overprivileged and not entirely able to open up either. Theon, for his part, is loyal and supportive but struggling with a lot of the same issue as in canon and though they seem to have resolved the question of his hostage status somewhat, the trauma still gets him, and his reaction to Karstark’s execution – which is the inciting moment here – is poignant and realistic.

Day 2: Modern AU

Subterranean Homesick Blues by Fluorescentgrey (M, 4.9k)

A beautifully atmospheric and achingly bittersweet fic. The setting is…I’m not sure but I want to say 80--90s maybe? The families and weed drug lords in Northern California, so there is a lot of mention of drug use, as a warning to anyone who’s not into that. But really, the fic isn’t about being drug lords at all. It’s about Theon’s past youth and lost love for/with Robb, on which he reminisces in vivid, idealized, and yet somehow suppressed flashbacks. They have a very canon-esque relationship in this, where it’s unclear if in between their friendship and partying and snuggling on illegal train rides their was more to their relationship, whether Robb reciprocated or it’s mostly in Theon’s head. The present time is a modern AU translation/version of Theon and Jeyne trying to make their way up to Seattle to Jon after they’ve escaped Ramsay. Their relationship/friendship is also well done. I just very much enjoyed both the style this was written in and how very canon-like this kind of feels, despite being a modern AU.

Day 3: Childhood/Pre-Canon/Friendship and brotherhood

This is just a super adorable childhood fic about Theon dealing with lowkey learning/realizing that life is slowly moving on without him back home and Robb dealing with wanting to be Theon’s brother but knowing he’s not really and that Theon has actual sibling he might want to bonding with. And, of course, both of them learning to navigate each other and their friendship. Angsty and cute at the same time. Robb’s POV especially is fantastic –  I love the bit of petulance mixed with naivete where he’s got this genuine but very childish understanding of what Theon should be acting like if he had really been “stolen” as he claims, but he does have kind of an instinctive understanding of the truth at the same time because he’s so uncomfortable about the whole thing (yet doesn’t want to acknowledge it).

Day 4: Trust and loyalty

to bandage your wounds with the salt on my tongue by janie_tangerine (T, 1.6k)

Perhaps only vaguely fitting this prompt/theme, but it IS a No Defection AU where Theon comes back to Robb after things go to shit on Pyke. But really, what I love about it most is that it’s an incredibly tender hurt/comfort fic (because Theon comes back sick, for hand-wavy reasons). Soooo much cuddling and tenderness and it’s incredibly iddy. I’m more meh about this aspect, but I know a lot of people enjoy Theon having some self-doubts and self-esteem issues in these sorts of situations, which is a pretty central emotional note in this fic, and Robb is in fact very reassuring in response.

Day 5: Secret Relationship

After All This Time by saltywench / @salty-wench (M, 11k)

A fantastic, entertaining, enthralling, tropey in the best way 1940s-1950s Hollywood AU! This fic is basically a short romance novella, staring Theon as a rising movie star and Robb a blossoming young director who’s family is very “from the industry.” The secret relationship comes from the fact that, well, it’s the 1950s so homophobia very much exists, and especially in such a public-facing industry. But it’s handled with such a light touch that it’s not overwhelming at all and serves the conflict in a meaningful way. It’s a story filled with this sense of romance and longing and hope and nostalgia in the end that is somehow especially heart wrenching, but in a good way – and I think for that it’s the kind of fic that’s difficult to comment and write a rec for.

The characterization, plot, pacing, emotional and sexual tension, and the supporting cast (Patrek, Kyra, Margaery!) were all incredibly on point. (And of course the happy ending!) I have to say, I loved some reversals and trope subversions here especially, such as Theon being an outsider to the Hollywood scene, but not working class like in so many modern AUs. His family is also fancy in its own way, just not the kind that would help him here. And Robb must apologize at one point or another for being an oblivious prick – always a nice dynamic reversal!

For fic I really love (all on AO3) fluorescentgrey Muccamukk churchkey and independent_variables among many, many others. I love @/anticmiscellaney 's zines-- his comic art is unique and a beautiful addition to the genre. Right now I'm reading a lot of war biographies or histories. For fiction Catch-22 was my favorite read of the year, along with delving into the Discworld universe.

I'm a total sucker for historical AUs, fix-it, and kidfic/found family. I also love songfic-- it was really popular when I was first reading fic and getting into fandom but I see less and less of it now.

Passover. It has the best food.

I draw and read and write and also now I work on bicycles. I love working on my bikes. I'm replacing my wheels next week. Isn't that exciting. Also enjoy hiking and being outdoors and cooking for my friends and family. Earlier this week I made a batch of raspberry-white chocolate blondies that unintentionally turned out pink.

I'm not fun enough for fun facts. Uhhhh my mom and I go mushroom hunting (not the psychedelic kind, mostly for chanterelles and lobsters). We tried to teach our dogs to hunt truffles but they didn't have the attention span. Oh! I do West Coast Swing. It's like classic 1940s swing dance but modern and (imo) prettier.
