Aaah I didn't know other anons were paying attention to my embarrassing requests for scrubbies😳😭 Now I need to step up my game and think of more creative requests...
But also yes I agree 5 star yelp review for the tickle cleaning machine!!! Only drawback is a machine can't tickle talk me..... OR CAN IT??? (this is a challenge!)
from cleaning anon🧼🛁
Ooooh my yessss I have like a whole little troupe of cleaning anons nowww ~ I daresay my business will be booming when I have you all lined up on the conveyer to go in like a waterpark ride, once the strip-bot is done having her way with you of course, pulling away your clothes and tossing them into the bins while my techs start slapping rubber cuffs on your wrists before chasing you into the flume with their tickle sticks.
With a hummmmm the magnets in your cuffs are drawn up to keep your arms secure over your head so that the smirking operator can pull the crank and send you downnn the water chute, passing through gate after gate of ticklyyyy spraying jets for your presoak. As the ride slows you are treated to two previews. The desperate whimpering giggly gasps of the person ahead of you, just around the corner ~ and from a viewing window you can see the cleaning anon who completed their treatment, trembling and blushyyy pink as they're brought out for inspection to a crowd of techs with fluffy plumes.
Ahh but you're getting distracted and didn't even see the scan bots appear. All those red lights gliding up and down your body, making it tingle and wiggle. Probing brushies slide out to test your skin for imperfections. Klaxons wail every time they find a spot. The brush in your navel sets one off. The brushes going between your toes go off endlessly. A brush in each armpit goes off. Your back, your shoulders, even your tush are marked. The body map behind them, the cleansing plan, grows more complex by the second as it continuously updates.
Reaching an unheard of threshold, you aren't going around the curve to join those giggles, the floor instead opens and you are deposited for deep cleaning. The table below instantly reacts to the weight of your body and snatches your wrists and ankles with thick straps. With a buzzing sound the spherical denizen of this cleansing chamber floats into view.
"Convening cleaning intervening~!" The machine chirps in rhyme, rumbling as it produces a spider-like array of scrubbing brushes, spinning buffers, and gloved hands working in rubbing pairs to suds themselves up. Your squirms and struggles go entirely unnoticed as the hands begin rubbing your sides and legs and feet so the brushes can move in and begin their teasing cleansing, spinning and swirling about to buff all your sensitive skin.
"Overweening queening leaning~!" The machine taunts as you protest, the buffers moving up to tease at your neck and under your arms. The hands massage and work the tingly cleansing bubbles into your skin, thumbs rubbing at your hips and inner thighs, coming back around after the brushes with a slickening solution to give your skin a nice pink sheen.
"Careening well-meaning spring cleaning~!" With a chime new cleansers enter the sudsy fray, twirling fluffy puffs glistening with their oil and approaching your navel, your royal chest buttons and even your lower royal button. The machine dings happily as it begins working your most regal areas to a perfect cleansed shine, the puffs whirling and grazing along your buttons with the utmost care while the hands tease and taunt tracing your pinkened softened areas ~ along your sides and ribs and underarms, down your legs to each toe. All those loving strokes inspecting and verifying while the puffies dip in and out under the watchful teasing eye of the machine~
Which continues until a horn honks loudly indicating a flip. With a spin the table inverts and you find yourself strapped similarly with your tush presented for all those tools. And the process begins again, the machine chiming and beeping while the hands and brushes move about to suds and clean and buff your booty, your thigh-backs, behind your knees, over your back with special attention to the small, and another coating for your armpits from behind.
"Survening silk-screening dry-cleaning!" Plucked up from the table, you find yourself on a clothesline like frame, hanging by your magnetic cuffs as the machine retracts and presents two long silken sheets. Your wiggling trembling cleansed form is pressed between them, the soft material wicking away the remaining solutions while stimulating your skin. Every struggle and wiggle you make only furthers the sensation as the silks are held close to your helpless body. And of course, the hands can't help but taunt and bully with poking strokes through the sheets on your worst spots, just daring you to get all worked up as they caress around your thighs and royal buttons~
"Reconvening supervening screening~!" The machine announces as it retracts and floats high into the ceiling. As you watch it depart with a gloved hand waving, you look back down and are face to face with the smirking face of the quirky inspector.
"Hiii~!!" The boisterous energy is matched by an expression of loving contempt for her product. Snapping on a glove and inspecting your hanging body, she muses about "Hmmm. Mmmhmm. Uhhh-huhhh". With a pause, she pulls out a notepad, scratches something into it and has both the pad and pen drop carelessly as she reaches into her lab coat and produces a wireless magic wand. With a growing sadistic grin she activates the scanners and starts buzzing your most royal button. "Dirty little thing. Go on. Be naughty. Be nasty." She taunts, a thumb rubbing your side earnestly while the wand chases your button with buzzing tickly vibrations.
And as your giggling moans start to escape your resistant lips, you realize you'll be seeing that machine again very soon~

To the Ties Made of Crimson- A SatoGou Fanfic
Tumblr media
[Read on Ao3!]
Rated G - No Warnings Pokemon Journeys Ash/Goh 7645 Words
Summary: There's a red string, tiny, nearly transparent, tied to Gou's finger that trails off into the night. He tells himself he's as ambivalent towards it as his family seems to be. A little string doesn't matter to him. At least, not in comparison to the other dreams he's racing towards. There's a red string, small, shining in the light, tied to Satoshi's finger that he winds around his wrist. He wonders about it, daydreams about it. And yet, with every other goal he's chasing, a little string falls by the wayside. Until it doesn't.
Notes: I've always loved to think of red string au's as the world telling you about the choices you're going to make. Not determining your future for you, but sharing the future you made with your past self. Love and time are both too free and fluid to be restrained in a linear way. Enjoy the gay pokeani boys.

Maybe it would’ve been a bigger thing if his parents had been around more. Somehow, through research and school and stargazing, Goh had neglected to give too much thought to his string, beyond the day to day of it. Quickly after he became conscious of it, it just as easily was slipped into the back of his mine. Or rather filed, categorized.
It was like another body part to him. Goh had dark hair that curled up on the ends, and weak legs that could run fast but not for very long, and a string tied to the end of his finger that looped and coiled about.
It was another part of growing up, wasn’t it?
Some families made a big deal of milestones like this, charting heights, filming first steps, celebrating seeing your string for the first time. But like all those other things, for Goh, that was simply a part of getting older.
In all honesty, Goh was almost shy about it. It wasn’t that he was purposefully trying to hide it, but having hardly ever talked about it with his family he tended to shy away from the subject.
He vaguely remembers his classmates teasing him about it once, a good few years ago. It was that little stretch of time between seeing Mew and quitting school. Where he went only because he felt he had to, not learning anything at all.
“The only thing waiting at the end of Goh’s string is Mew!”
“Mew’s the only soulmate he would accept anyway.”
“Don’t be silly, it’s not like someone like Goh has a string!”
It didn’t hurt like it was meant to, and Goh ignored their teasing until they grew tired of it.
Secretly, quietly, with only the stars as his judges, Goh wondered if they were right.
Maybe he truly wasn’t meant for another human to love, in any sense of the word. He was just fine on his own.
He was eight when he decided, on a winter’s night, on a rooftop, alone. Yes, he didn’t need a soulmate- platonic, romantic, it didn’t matter. Goh would be fine on his own, just him and his search for Mew. That would be enough.
He leaned against the railing of the building, resting his chin on the weathered stone. It’s cold, he shivered slightly.
Goh breathed out heavily just to watch the puff of breath flume out in front of him. It rose up before it dissipated, swirled about for a seconds blink and then it was gone. Goh stared up where his breath once was, but the stars were all that stared back at him, blinking, watching. Goh blinked back.
Slow, one, two, three, blinks in a row. He heard once that some pokemon like it when you blink real slow at them like that. That it told them without words, “I love you”.
Bliiiink. Bliiiiink. Bliiiiiiiiink. To the stars above.
He held his hand up above him. It was still hard to see, it didn’t come as naturally to him as it should’ve.
When he focused, breathed deep and really looked, he could see it. The thread that blew about gently, the tiny knot that kept it secured to his finger. It was a sparkling, shimmering red. Like the streaks in his hair, almost, but ever so slightly off.
Goh rubbed his thumb across his palm, curling all his fingers in. The string caught slightly with the motion. Goh wondered if all the way out there, past the horizon, under the starlight, if the person on the other end could feel the twinge.
‘I’m sorry,’ He wanted to say to the person waiting on the other end. ‘I will not wait for you.’
For a moment, he wondered.
‘What sort of person would be tied to someone like me?’
For another, he wondered.
‘That is, if there’s anyone at all.’
A chill winter's wind whipped around Goh, tossing his hair back and forth.
Concentrating on the string again, Goh pulled at it with his finger. Tugging ever so slightly more, it was gently giving until he’d got it wrapped around his wrist a few times, resting gently on his palm.
He gave the thread a soft pull, holding it taut for a few seconds before releasing it again. He pulled again. Released again. Pulled. Released.
‘I’m sorry,’ He thought, ‘ you were matched with someone like me.’
It became something of a habit, an idle repetition his fingers get up to on their own. A soft tug for a moment, then release. One. Two. Three. I love you. I’m sorry.
That’s what it meant to Goh at least, that’s what it was meant to mean.
What the person on the other end took it as, he wasn’t sure.
‘If anyone is there at all,’ his mind filled again, on its own.
He tended to keep his string wrapped up like that. Looped around his wrist, running against his palm. It was in his hand, in his grasp.
Every now and then he felt a jolt or two coming from the other end. Somewhat frequently to be honest, but there never seemed to be any pattern to it.
‘Is this your message?’ Goh asked himself, asked the string. ‘ Do you wonder about me the same way I wonder about you?’
The string didn’t answer. It never had before.
Yet Goh found himself curling around the thread as he slept, dreaming, waiting.

Ash probably should’ve paid a bit more attention in class, or to his neighbours, or even just to Gary’s bragging. It just seemed boring at the time, so the thought never really stuck. There were Pokemon to meet! New places to see.
So honestly, Ash didn’t really know what the strings were until he caught note of his one day. A sliver of a sparkle, red caught in the breeze with his hands out in front of him.
It was like it was there, then gone again when he blinked.
For a moment, Ash wondered if his eyes were malfunctioning. He stared long and hard at his hand, the left one. There, just there if he paid enough attention, was the thin red string adorning his little finger.
It curled around and overlapped itself, one two three ringlets between his knuckles. A tight, even knot held it in place.
Ash curled his finger in, watching intently. The string followed, tightening slightly.
And for some reason, a grin spread across Ash's face, and a laugh spilled out from his lips.
Regardless of the why and how, even if Ash didn’t understand it himself, there was something about watching the little string float out from his finger that sparked a bit of joy in him.
He didn’t manage to tell his mother before she figured it out on her own. In his defence he really had been meaning to tell her, he just wasn’t sure how to bring it up. In hers, she had known it was coming soon. She’d been watching.
They were on a walk together, night settling over Pallet Town once more. The streetlights stretched their shadows side by side. Ash, eight years old, was nearly the same height as his mother by the shadows illusion, providing he walked on tiptoe.
Step by step they made their way, and Ash raised his arms up up up to the sky, watching how his string caught the streetlight, its dazzling crimson hue against the rest of the inky black.
“It’s a very pretty string, isn’t it?” Delia remarked idly.
Ash’s attention snapped towards her.
“You can see it too?”
Delia looked straight ahead, at the road winding down in front of her.
“Mmhm.” She hummed in reply.
Ash stood stock still, frozen in place from the shock.
Delia turned slightly, still walking.
“Ash?”
“Mamaaaaa!” He whined, “Why didn’t you tell me?!”
Delia sighed, but she was smiling. It’s soft, a fragile expression she feared wouldn’t last.
“Why didn’t you tell me ?”
Ash grimaced as he realized he wouldn't be winning this argument.
“I’m your mother! I’d hope you’d tell me when important things happen, for your safety at the least.”
Ash jogged the few steps forward to catch up with his mother, slowing as he matched her stride. He watched his own feet kick up dust instead of meeting her eye.
“I’m sorry, Mama. I did mean to tell you…”
She couldn’t hold it against him, not really, and she knew it.
“But…” Ash continued, and Delia steeled herself. “What is this, even? You said it was important?”
Taking a deep breath, Delia reached out, placing a hand on her son's shoulder.
“In some ways it can be very, very important, and in others, it’s not. That depends on you.”
“But what is it?!” Ash pressed, impatient. His steps grew more forceful, his anticipation growing.
“It’s your string, Ash.”
“I know it’s a string, Mama.”
“Not just a string. Your string.”
Ash tilted his head to the side, looking over at his mother. He watches her expression, staying ever neutral as she explained.
“A string appears around your finger sometime before you turn ten, though the ages tend to vary between six and nine-ish, with outliers either direction. They wind around your littlest finger and are invisible most of the time. People can see their own strings however, as well as the strings of people they’re particularly close to, like family members or very close friends. The stronger the red colour, the stronger the connection.”
“Between who? Family members?”
Delia shook her head, and hoped her voice wouldn't do the same.
“Between string partners. Somewhere out there, the other end of the string on your finger has travelled all the way to wrap around someone else’s finger.”
Ash was quiet for a moment, contemplating. His eyes snapped open.
“Who?”
“That’s the thing. We don’t know who’s on the other end of your string. Not yet anyway.”
“Not yet?”
Delia pulled her son in just the slightest bit closer as they walked.
“The person on the other end… they’re what people call a soulmate. A stringmate, sometimes. It’s a way of telling you that there’s someone out there who you’re gonna love an awful lot, and they’re gonna do the same.”
Ash scrunched his face up.
“Like… a date? Aiko from school mentioned something ‘bout that once… I think…?”
Delia hummed lightly.
“Mm. It can be, if you want and your string mate wants. It’s up to you to decide what it means.”
“Sounds… complicated.”
Ash stuck out his tongue and scowled.
“Aw-ahaha… Ash, listen alright.”
Ash’s expression turned to confusion, but he looked his mother in the eye as she spoke.
“Having a string mate can be a wonderful thing. It’s a bit exciting to know that somewhere out there is another person who’s gonna care about you sooooo much, that you have a little string to remind you. Don’t let it be a sad thing, okay? Having more people to care about is always a good thing, and I know you care about people, pokemon, and things an awful lot.”
Ash nodded, listening as she talked.
“But who put the string there? Why do they wanna tell me?”
Delia shrugged her shoulders.
“We don’t know. Some people think it’s a pokemon we don’t know about yet. Other people think it’s our world itself! Some people say Arceus creates them. But it doesn’t matter so much as to why they’re there as much as knowing that they are there, and you get to figure out what you do with that.”
Ash groaned a bit.
“It’s so complicated!”
“It is, it is, but it’s exciting too, isn’t it?”
And Ash let a smile poke through, a small one.
“Yeah… it is. I hope my string mate is super super nice! Do you think they’re gonna like Pokemon like me? Do they live in Pallet? Or maybe super super far away?! How would I meet them then? When can I meet ‘em? I wanna see ‘em super super soon!”
Delia gave her son’s shoulder a slight squeeze.
“I’m sure your soulmate will be a wonderful person. As for where, that’s another mystery. Some people wind up their strings to try and pull their string mate closer, others try to find the person on the other end by following it, but I don’t think either of those work very well. Strings get caught sometimes.”
“Caught?”
“On places that’ll be important to you, on memories you haven’t had yet. Sometimes they even loop around other people if they’re important to you meeting, or other Pokemon!”
Ash lit up.
“It’s like a big red web!”
“Exactly.”
Ash picked up his steps again, walking forward with just a bit more excitement. The tiny porch light on their house, glowing warm and friendly, welcomed them home with its infrequent flickers.
“One last question…” Ash said, toying with his own string again.
“Shoot.”
“If p-particularly close family members- and friends- are able to see each other’s strings… Why can’t I see yours? Am… I not close enough?”
Delia had prepared herself for this question, and yet still found herself somewhat unprepared to answer.
“No, no we’re very very close, sweetheart, don’t you worry about that. You can’t see my string because I don’t have one.”
“Oh.” Ash kept walking. “Is that sad?”
He asked genuinely, purely out of curiosity. And with years and years of fielding the same question, Delia could honestly say this was the only time the person asking hadn’t treated the revelation like some kind of tragedy.
“Nope. I’m very happy as I am, with you and my friends and my work, there are lots of people I care about and who care about me! I don’t need a string to help me find them or to remind me.”
“And… I do?”
“Maybe. Some people never meet their stringmate, or at least, they never know who their stringmate is. Stringmates are just important people after all, there’s not strict rules. All that we can say for sure is that there’s a little red string on your finger and on the other end is someone else who’s gonna care about you very, very much, and the same will go for you. The universe wants you to know that for one reason or another, and now it’s a part of your journey, however you’d like to make it a part of that.”
As Delia finished her sentence, she rounded the corner that turns onto the tiny rock path leading up to her house. Ash continued forward as Delia turned to check the mailbox once before heading inside. Ash waited by the door for her, hesitating just slightly.
“I hope I get to meet them someday. Someone I care about… and who cares about me… if they’re important enough that something wants to tell me that…”
He trailed off for a moment, and as Delia made her way up the steps, she wondered if he'd finished the sentence there.
“If something wants to tell me that… then I gotta meet 'em someday. I gotta tell ‘em, so they know they’re cared about. I promise… I will tell them.”
And Ash opened up the door and headed inside.
Letting a contented smile wash over her face, Delia followed suit.
Really, strongly, she hoped that Ash would meet his soulmate someday.
At the least, because she’d like to think they’d be better for knowing him.
-
It honestly had been a pretty good day for the most part. He almost wished there was a more solid reason, but really Goh had just been slipping into unease without fair reason.
It just lined up that way. The anxiety and uncertainty that was building in him, the bubbling uncomfortable feeling he couldn’t let spill to anyone in his tiny little apartment.
Theoretically, metaphorically speaking.
His parents were staying at work for the night, finishing up a project deadline, and his grandmother had been on a trip to visit her old friends for the past 4 days.
So no one would know if he slipped away, stayed somewhere else for the night.
The swift night breeze seeped through Goh’s sweater and seeped into his skin, chilling him enough to almost make him return to his apartment to grab a coat. But tenacity is a flaw as much as a virtue, and he pushed onward with gritted teeth.
The heavy bag slung across his back carried everything he really needed for the night. Sleeping bag, pop up tent, research notes and gadgets.
He told himself this was for research purposes alone. Pure coincidence that his stargazing spot was the optimal conditions for research.
He wasn’t a great liar, even to himself, but if he kept repeating it, maybe he’d start to believe it.
It was just suffocating there, he let himself think as he heaved his way up the old stairs, too focused on carrying the weight to filter his own stream of consciousness.
The empty rooms, the still, stale air. It bordered on uncanny the longer he stayed there. The lights illuminated the nothingness that permeated the space, pushing Goh out.
So he ran away, again, like always. Like a coward.
Goh was used to setting up this tent by now. It was like a friend to him, each motion familiar.
With the tent secure, or secure as can be on a rooftop instead of the intended ground, Goh lets himself lean back against the hard concrete railing, looking up towards the stars as always.
Without thinking about it, he subconsciously raised his right hand up, watching the trailing red thread dance about in the wind.
‘I’m sorry.’ He thought, a frequent occurrence.
The thread didn’t answer. It never did.
Goh grit his teeth, tearing his eyes away from the skies.
Usually stargazing helped him feel better, and today it only succeeded in making him feel worse.
Whatever.
It didn’t matter.
He didn’t need to worry about his parents, his soulmate, none of it was important.
Research was important. Mew was important. If his readings were correct, the Lugia appearing over town tomorrow afternoon was important.
Ducking back inside the tent, Goh repeated the same to himself over and over, until exhaustion took over and he slipped into listless sleep.
-
He ran down the hill like his life depended on it, backpack thunking against him, heart pounding in his ears.
(He ran up the road, fuelled by adrenaline and excitement, partner clinging onto his shoulder, heart pounding in his ears.)
He jumped, leaping towards a creature he’d only seen on a flickering computer screen.
(He jumped, leaping towards a monster, a friend, something to be challenged.)
And he was slipping, falling-
(And he was climbing, reaching)
And then their eyes met.
-
In someways, looking back, Goh felt stupid for not realizing it. The way his heart pounded, the thrilling exciting feeling of it all. Didn’t it just make sense as a meeting of two soulmates?
And yes, that's what it is, that’s what it was, and looking back Goh blushed and felt his string wrap just the tiniest bit tighter around his finger. Maybe it was just his imagination, but he swore he could feel it pulling at him when he thought about it.
But then…
The spray of the ocean clung to his skin, blood pumping hot through his veins, eyes drawn to the person beside him.
Because what kind of person would do something like this? Jump onto Lugia, ride it over the bay. It’s madness, truly speaking.
Goh’s exact brand of insanity.
So his thoughts were a bit rushed and jumbled as he clung onto the Pokemon. He managed to remember to grab research data, and he managed to stay hanging on.
What kind of person would do something like this?
‘Someone like me’, his mind supplied.
And with all his attention poured onto his new companion, then following the exhausting travel home, Goh didn’t even think about his string once.
-
Ash wanted to say he spoke up because he had a feeling, or because he was drawn to Goh, or anything romantic like that.
Instead, it was late at night. The moonlight peered in through the slats in the blinds and Ash watched it wash up against the walls from his bed. He couldn’t sleep.
He hated not being able to sleep, it was such an awkward uncomfortable feeling, the urge to squirm and twist filling his mind.
For the sake of Pikachu, curled up against his side, he restrained himself.
Ash watched its ears twitch slightly as it slept, watched its back rise and fall in a steady even rhythm.
For a while, that was enough. The even tempo provided by Pikachu was soothing, sweet. Ash could feel his eyelids growing heavier with each little twitch of Pikachu’s ears.
But that wasn’t the problem.
It was the buzzing, uncomfortable feeling that zigzagged back and forth in his chest. Like if a dozen Joltik had all crawled their way in there. Ash grimaced at the mental image.
That buzzing feeling that wouldn’t cease, wouldn’t let him sleep no matter how tired he was, it was beginning to drive Ash insane.
Or at least, that was the excuse he wanted to come up with, because he couldn't think of a good reason for why he’d whispered out.
Lightly, quietly enough there was no risk of anyone hearing him, unless they’d been straining their ears for it, Ash spoke.
“Goh.”
It wasn’t a question, it was nothing but a name, let loose into the night cautiously.
There was silence for a moment, near silence at least.
Ash strained his ears.
Pikachu’s breathing, Sobble snoring, the air conditioner running, and there -
“ Ash .”
So very, very quiet, as light as a feather, was Goh’s voice.
The buzzing feeling subsided only lightly.
“Are you alright?”
Ash asked, without even thinking about it.
Near silence again. The buzzing returned, growing dizzier and more frantic.
Ash clenched his fists, screwing his eyes shut. Had he just imagined Goh’s voice, was he really that sleep deprived?
“Why?” Came Goh’s reply, still as hushed as could be.
“Today… it was….” Ash began.
Terrifying, Worrying, Scary.
HIs mind filled in. But Ash couldn’t say any of these things.
“Intense.” He settled on.
“With Suicune? And the hunters?”
“Mm.”
Ash could hear his blood rushing better than he could hear Goh. It thumped in his ears, pounding and pounding. He wondered if he was getting a headache. Maybe that's why he couldn’t sleep.
“Were you scared?” Goh answered after a moment’s hesitation.
Ash’s breath caught in his throat.
He wanted to say no. Either No, because he always believed Goh would win in the end, or No because he’d faced scarier things, or just No because he didn’t want Goh to worry but instead he said nothing at all.
Goh spoke again, not waiting for Ash’s reply.
“‘Cause… I was just a little. Don’t tell Chloe.”
“You were scared?” Ash asked. He didn’t mean for it to sound accusatory, he was just… surprised.
“I-I… augh, yes, yes I was, okay, are you gonna laugh because I’d prefer you just get it over with.”
“No!” Ash lowered his voice, careful, “No, I just… You seemed so prepared and ready.”
“I just… I thought they were gonna really hurt Suicune. And I wouldn’t be able to stop it. It felt like… like if I couldn’t stop them from hurting Suicune, then… what was even the point of being a trainer, you know?”
And Ash’s heart ached badly because he did . He knew exactly what Goh meant.
He’d just hoped that Goh wouldn’t have to feel it.
“Yeah.” Ash replied, and this time his voice was the one as light as air.
He opened his palm just to clench it again.
“Suicune deserved better than that, you know? I wonder if… if maybe it’s been taken advantage of before? It hid up really high in this big old tree, and it didn’t want me anywhere near it. A-and I can’t blame it, I don’t, I- I don’t know if it… hated me for catching it? I just wanted to help it, but I kept feeling like I screwed up.”
Goh trailed off.
“And?”
Ash prompted lightly.
“And when we were in the tree, I just… I remember sitting with it, facing away ‘cause I remembered that Suicune get shy about observation, and I just… I had this feeling like we understood each other. Like… right then, Suicune understood I was trying to take care of it. I’ve never felt anything quite like that before.”
The last few words came out breathy, and Ash could hear the emotion trickling through Goh’s words.
“So yeah… I was scared that… that even after I’d managed to like… connect with it or something, I’d let it down. Then… would it ever trust anyone again?”
“But you didn’t, did you? You saved it, and it knew that, and it stayed with you. Everything worked out.”
Ash was trying to reassure Goh, but he didn’t even feel like he was convincing himself.
“Yeah.” Goh replied, “It did. I wish I didn’t still feel worried about it.”
Ash could’ve kicked himself. Of course Goh felt worried, of course and here he was just making things worse this was so frustrating and the buzzing just kept getting worse .
“I-“ Ash tried, but the words fizzled out.
“I-!” He tried again.
Gritting his teeth, Ash pulled his arm in closer to his chest. He could feel the string on his finger pulling at him, growing tighter as he curled in on himself.
“I was scared too.” He managed, finally, to say. Still quiet into the darkness, still hushed and cautious.
“You were?” Came Goh’s reply, hesitant.
“For Suicune, of course… that even if we tried our best, those hunters might still get away with it. I’m glad they didn’t.”
Ash bit his lip. That wasn’t all of it, he knew it wasn’t, but it felt so hard to say what should’ve been simple.
“Yeah…”
The buzzing, the buzzing, the awful trapped feeling laying under his own skin, it was becoming unbearable. Why couldn’t he just say what he wanted to?
“A-and.” Ash started, unable to go any further.
“And?” Goh prompted, gently.
“And… you.”
There was a quick noise, a quiet noise, a sharp intake of breath followed by silence.
Silence, then a shy, “me?” Wavering down from the top bunk.
“I- I was trying to keep calm, and reassure Lucario and everything but… I guess it could just feel my own worry. When I heard you shouting I couldn’t see you at all. I was so worried that… maybe they’d hurt you.”
“Ash…”
“I’m sorry. It’s not that I don’t trust you, I promise! I know you’re strong, I don’t ever want you to think I don’t believe in you.”
Ah. So that was it. Funny how talking to Goh made all the threads in his mind seem to untangle just right.
“Ash I-! I didn’t think that, don’t worry. I don’t… think that. I’m just- I-… I’m… happy? I think? That… that you were worried. For me.”
“Of course I worry about you!”
“I worry about you too!”
And part of that made Ash’s skin crawl, because he didn’t want anyone worrying on his behalf, not even his mother. And another part of him, tiny and hidden and tucked away, breathed a quiet sigh of relief.
“I- I’m not happy that you're worried ,” Goh explained, stumbling over his words, “Or I guess I kind of am? But… I guess I’m happy that you ‘care enough to be concerned’, or whatever however that saying went.”
“Saying?”
“Nothing, it’s silly! Just… something in one of Chloe’s fairy tale books that... stuck with me, I suppose.”
“Mm…. Fairytale, huh… tell me about it?”
“Of course!”
And maybe it was Goh’s gentle words, they way they came even and breathy. Maybe it was the tugging at his hand. The thread around it getting pulled gently, then released, long and slow and even. One. Two. Three. A moment’s rest. One… two… three.
It almost seemed like the motion and Goh’s voice were in tandem with each other.
The buzzing was subsiding. Washed away by warm golden light Ash could feel himself sinking into as he fell asleep.
As he drifted off, Ash’s finger caught on the edge of the string just slightly, and he pulled it in closer to himself. Hopefully the person on the other end could feel it, could feel that warmth that Ash was basking in.
Maybe it was just sleep taking hold, but like a knot had been untied, Ash could’ve sworn the string was coming easier now, giving just that slightest bit more.
-
Most people, as close as the two of them were, probably would’ve asked each other by now. If for nothing else than pure curiosity.
Goh had asked Chloe about her string when they were both nine, just managing to see the sparkling sliver of hers when she held it up to the light.
“Are you gonna follow it?”
He’d asked, idly reaching out to try and touch the thing.
“I… don’t know.”
There was something so solitary in her voice, far and echoing down a tunnel of her thoughts, that Goh never asked about her string again.
She, of course, knew better than to mention his string. She’d heard the teasing, she knew what they thought. Sometimes she wondered if Goh ever thought the same.
In all honesty, Goh suspected that’s why he’d never managed to ask Ash about his string, if he even had one. It’s not that he wasn’t curious about it, he was so curious it made his brain itch. Rather if he did ask, common courtesy would have him show his string in return, and Goh would rather not talk about that. He took some consolation in the fact that Ash never asked either. Maybe he was just as shy. It felt weird to imagine Ash being shy like that… but it was kind of fun to imagine him all flustered too, Goh thought.
So Goh didn’t ask about it. Tried not to think about it.
‘It’s not my business.’ He thought each time he caught himself straining his eyes at Ash’s finger tips. ‘If Ash wants to tell me about his string, he will.’
And for the most part, that worked well.
It was by pure, honest accident Goh ended up seeing Ash’s string that day. It caught in the bright, Alolan sunlight, light bouncing off the trophy they lifted up into the air together.
And it was a strange feeling, watching it twist about, looping around Ash until Goh couldn’t tell which direction the other end really led.
Strange, in that something about knowing someone else out there cared very much for Ash made Goh’s heart warm. Good, he thought. Ash should be cared for so very, very much. But even thinking those words felt somewhat strained, pulled back as if tied up, prevented from coming to fruition fully.
And yet…
Even with that feeling nagging at him, over all of that was a silly sort of contentment.
Seeing Ash’s string meant they were close, at least in the universe’s eyes.
Goh grinned over at Ash, who did the same in return.
He didn’t need the universe to tell him they were close. He already knew that perfectly well.
But…
It was kind of nice.
-
He wasn’t even planning it, it all just happened at once. Goh wasn’t thinking much, running after Ash.
Of course, he was thinking, a lot.
Messy, shapeless thoughts of excitement and joy and satisfaction were whirling about in his head.
He just wasn’t thinking things through like normal. There was no plan, no reason behind it. Only Ash’s grinning smile, eyes widening as Goh approached.
He didn’t even have to say a word for Ash to open his arms, and Goh was leaping, throwing himself into Ash.
The impact was enough to knock them both back a bit, Goh grabbing onto Ash hard and feeling Ash’s arms gripping him in much the same way.
Running on the same excitement Ash spurred them both forward, a spin that carried the momentum into whirlwind.
Spinning, around and around, Goh’s eyes shut tight as his smile stretched further.
Until they weren’t anymore.
Until he found his eyes had opened. Looking out to a swirling array of reds, vibrant and dazzling, all around them.
He tumbled out of Ash’s grip, still laughing along with him. It wasn’t until they both jumped up together, feet finally back on the ground, that Ash opened his eyes in turn, widening as he took in the view with a quick gasp.
The excitement was still there, the laughing thrilling joy still running about them. It was simply the sight of the string curling its way through reality, around them both, that settled a feeling of hush over them.
“Whoaaaa….”
Ash breathed out, looking up at the swirling circles of red enveloping the both of them.
“I-is that my string? Or yours?”
And Goh, feeling Ash’s arms around him, feeling Ash’s breathing, in his own grip (it was just that slightest bit heavier with his excitement) feeling the flustered sort of joy that envelops them both, replied in kind.
“Yeah… I think it is.”
-
They didn’t talk about it for another 3 days.
Ash swore he meant to, he promised, it was just… everything all happened at once, and with Gengar and getting back to Kanto and the championships coming up, there was so much to do that he just… didn’t bring it up.
He didn’t forget, he didn’t avoid it on purpose.
It was more that, if Goh wasn’t going to bring it up again, Ash had enough to think about, mind busy and buzzing and clattering.
Or he did, for a bit, and then… things subsided. The chaos of his life always seemed to ebb and flow like that. Everything on top of itself, compounding on top of him, then it all receded.
The calm always came, eventually, whether he recognized it or not.
The moment it clicked for him was three days after they’d both gotten home, adventures sticking around the port again for the time being.
He hadn’t even meant to talk about it that day either, but things always fell into place like that, didn’t they?
With all the locals up for a battle beat for the day, Ash stuffed his hands in his pockets and headed up the hill to the spot where he promised Goh they’d meet.
He could see Goh’s profile in the distance as he made his way up. The setting sun over the ocean cast light against Goh, obscuring his face. A shimmering ring of golden looped around him, and Ash held his hand up to get a clearer look as he drew nearer.
Goh stood looking out over the town, one arm out in front of him, reaching his fingerstips outwards as if trying to scoop the sun out of the bay.
Sarunori lingered off to the side, more preoccupied in playing with Goh’s new Shellder than with Goh himself.
Pressing his finger to his lip and nudging Pikachu to follow along, Ash walked over to Goh, quietly settling in to stand beside him.
The breeze passed over them.
Ash glanced towards Goh’s hand, watching the string flicker back and forth in the wind.
“It really is pretty…” Ash murmured.
Goh startled slightly, though he tried not to show it.
“Yeah. It really is.”
Ash raised his own hand to Goh’s, letting them bump against each other. The section of the string kept wound around Goh’s palm slowly came undone in the breeze, and Ash watched how his end of the string gave in response.
“We… we really are soulmates, Goh?”
Goh swallowed. Ash wasn’t just asking if the strings truly did connect, and he knew it.
“I think we are. I want us to be.”
Goh took a nervous glance over to Ash.
Ash in return, faced the port.
“Awwughh!” Ash yelled, kind of, it was a bit of an odd noise, and Goh really couldn’t conceal his jump this time.
“S-Ash?! Ash is it really that ba-“
“I shoulda known sooner! I promised- I’m so sorry…”
“ Huh ?”
Goh stared Ash down in bewilderment, but Ash returned him with an oddly focused look.
“Mama told me about soulmates and what they mean. How it’s the world or Arceus or whatever telling you this person on the other end cares about you and the other way around.”
There was such conviction in Ash’s words, such honesty in his tone. Goh felt his eyes begin to sting.
“I wanted to meet my soulmate so bad so I could tell 'em I cared about them… even if I just met ‘em I thought it’d be able to feel it, yanno? …and even then I wanted them to know. That I cared about them or would care about them or whatever. It’s important.”
And Goh tried so hard to keep himself together, but he cracked and tumbled, and the tears stinging his eyes grew strong enough to spill over.
“Ash… what are you even saying?” He was crying, the tears streamed down his face in quick succession, but he couldn’t help from smiling either.
“You’ve already shown me you love me more than words could ever say.”
It was Ash’s turn to blink in surprise for a moment, but the grin returned stronger than ever.
“Then I haven’t broken my promise after all!”
Goh wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.
“You never do.”
He took a deep, shaky breath, looking down and away from Ash’s face.
“Ash, I… I’m sorry.”
“Goh?”
“I… I don’t know if I thought I’d ever meet my soulmate. I never really… focused on it too much? And when I did it wasn’t exactly… pleasant. I was kind of stupid, you know? I didn’t really… believe. That there’d be someone out there who’d care for me like fairytales say. And when I met Mew… I guess part of me decided that it would be good enough. That if I got to see it again, I wouldn’t need a soulmate, or friends, or any kind of human connection.”
Ash opened his mouth as if to protest, but quietly closed it, letting Goh continue.
“I’m still going to see Mew. I’m gonna catch every pokemon! I'm gonna catch Mew! But… I like having friends. I love all the Pokemon I’ve caught, I love watching silly movies with Chloe, I love, love adventuring with you. I’m ambitious! I want it all. The me today can’t… even imagine that the younger me wanted to abandon his soulmate. I’m sorry.”
Ash was still quiet for a moment, holding his hands together. His right hand toyed with the string on the left. After a moment, he looked to Goh, face purely serious.
“Do you still feel that way? That you’d rather not have a soulmate at all?”
And Goh was able to finally meet his eye, look right into deep browns that clashed with glowing blues and know he meant it when he said,
“No.”
Ash’s expression melted back into a smile.
“Then all I really wanna know is… is it okay if I keep caring about you?”
“Only if it’s okay that I keep caring about you!”
“Okay?”
“Okay!”
And this time it was Ash who threw himself into Goh’s awaiting arms.
-
Things didn’t change as much as Goh feared they would, thank goodness for that. If there was anything he was fearing the most about being Ash’s soulmate, is that somehow it’d mean he lost him as a friend.
Things are the same, and yet different. Different in the way that fall is different from spring, while being the same feeling in reverse.
Goh liked it a lot, if he was being honest.
The little smiles Ash would give him, the special ones reserved just for him. He liked the word of it, the feeling of saying that’s him, that's Ash. His fate assigned friend, his special person.
Part of that just came with the knowledge that the inverse was true.
He mattered to Ash. So said the universe. So said Ash, every morning when they woke up and every night when they went to sleep.
“I love ya, Goh! Goodnight!” While tugging the string each evening, “Good morning, Goh!” Every dawn pulling at the thread.
And it wasn’t just the words of it, it was the way Ash would break a piece off of whatever he was eating to share it with Goh, it was the way he’d light up whenever he heard Goh cheering for him, it was the way his grip would tighten when he grabbed Goh’s hand and took him searching through the forest or the streets or wherever .
It was in those days, the adventures in the early morning, the returns home late at night, Goh felt like he finally understood why people cared so much about stringmates.
‘Cause he sure as hell cared about Ash.
To love Ash was to let himself be loved by Ash in return.
But universe or not, string or otherwise, that wasn’t all that loving Ash entailed, and Goh had known it for a while.
He’d just hoped it wouldn’t come so soon.
His stomach dropped as he read the message, it was like plunging into the water on Lugia’s back again. Like Lugia, but in reverse, as fall was to spring.
“Sorry, Ash. I…”
He took a moment to breathe, trying to keep his composure. Everything Ash had done had built up to this, since nearly as long as they’d known each other. Since way, way longer, Goh knew. He couldn’t ruin it now. At least, not more than he already was.
“Can’t watch your battle tomorrow.”
He finished. Hearing the words out loud, even from his own mouth, made them all the much more real, and all the much more worse.
Ash tried to hide it, but Goh still watched the shocked expression rise up onto his face.
“I got an urgent summons from Project Mew.” He explained slowly. He’d known this was a risk, he’d known that with both of them chasing after their dreams there was a chance their paths would separate.
“So I have to leave right now…”
And petty as it was, he’d wanted to see this! The look of blank surprise Ash wore when he won, followed by the elation and excitement as everything hit him? Goh loved seeing that expression on Ash’s face more than any other.
He’d wanted to see that. He had the utmost faith that Ash would win.
And if somehow, somehow , he hadn’t, Goh had wanted to be there, to encourage him. To tell him he knew Ash was capable of amazing things, that he would win someday, it just wasn’t time yet.
And yet, the time had come for them both to split, and Goh hated it.
“Really?”
Ash was smiling, again he was smiling. It didn’t stop Goh from hearing the hint of upset in his voice, the tiniest sliver of sadness buried by the other syllables. It didn’t stop him from feeling the gentle tug at the string, the pulling that compelled him to just run forward, cry, and never leave.
He stood his ground.
“Well then, you make sure you meet that Mew!”
If it was anyone else, the cheerfulness Goh was presented with would make him raise his defences. The idea that they didn’t care he was leaving.
But this was Ash. Goh knew Ash. He knew that voice, he knew that expression.
He knew Ash didn’t want him to leave, and selfishly, he was grateful.
“Yeah! Make sure you win too, Ash!”
He said, giving the string a quick, tight tug.
‘Don’t let me be the thing that drags you down. Not now and not ever.’
He thought, quietly praying the thoughts reached his soulmate.
“Yeah! It’s a promise!”
And it hurt still, Goh still felt that sting, but there was still the fact of the matter. He couldn’t stop destiny from calling him anymore than Ash could. He’d wanted to be there for Ash, he’d wanted Ash to be there with him when he saw Mew.
But maybe this… this could be their fate in the same way their meeting was.
For Ash to reach towards his goal at the same time as Goh jumped towards his… it felt fitting, in a cosmic sense.
He still hated it, but hating the universe was nothing new for Goh, was it?
“The next time we meet…”
And there would be a next time, Goh would cling to that next time. Meeting Mew was his destiny, the one crafted in the palm of his hands. Being with Ash was just as much his destiny, the one tied to his finger and held tight.
“It’ll be with a smile!”
‘I won’t wait for you.’ Goh thought as they bumped their fists together, string tangling with itself for a brief moment. ‘Cause I know you wouldn’t want that. We’re running towards our goals in parallel.’
He gave Ash one last wave before heading off in the opposite direction, back towards the hotel to gather his things.
Head down, fingers toying with the string, Goh tugged surely, slowly.
One.
Two.
Three.
‘We’ll find our way back together, Ash. I know we will. And when you see me again…
I’ll have Mew in one hand and you in the other.
That, and the biggest smile you’ve ever seen.
I promise.’

6 Jan 2023
Ladies with liquorice eyelashes go tick tock on the cobblestones.
A church clangs the time in handsome gold reverb in the blue air.
Some ex colleague comes to the joint and there are big handshakes
And those manly hugs only men do and then that crackly language.
Voluptuous shapes of fish dart and sting in the canal water whilst
Overhead on the bridges these strangers pose in colour for cameras.
Stalls stuffed with glitter globes and metal toys with famous flags.
Yonder down the park there’s a Christmas fair, a week unto 2023.
Kids go crazy on the carts and bumper rides in mock violence
And it kinda makes you wanna be a child again, that your body
Were that small so it could fit in one of the lil carriages in glee.
The leaves lie in wet auburn triangles on the floor and the adult
Folks smoking leave these terminal white puffs in rangy sight.
On the stereo speakers are these age-old Xmas classics sang in
American English with their universal crooner spleen and ore.
Out from the market and unto the lofty streets with the vermillion
Trams shackling by as if it were 100 years back and you
Were in a movie or a photograph and weren’t anybody magic.
You pass the Farmacia signs with their seductive green neon crosses.
There’s a Poste Italia – here – and you pop in there, with a postcard
You must send back to your father in the United Kingdom and
The office inside is very hushed and the ladies in the booths are
Senior and wear gaudy paint on their eyes and there are a few words
Of English as they look for a stamp to send the card airborne …
Grazie you say as you leave and there’s a Polizia car outside;
And there’s a slight glimmer of nervousness at the slick blue vehicle.
(Yesterday you passed a governmental building of some sort and
There was this lady outside in camouflage uniform and this
Humungous machine gun saddled nicely in her arms as if she were
Holding a baby: and it was shit scary to be that close to a gun:
Because you’ve never seen one up so close and physical before.)
As you walk your memories holler about with this inner friction.
Which jumps out in these random words, talking to yourself.
You wonder when your mind will ever stop being so relentless.
But when you’re in another part of the world … you feel, hmm,
A bit forgiven? Perhaps? And you’ll just have to live with your
Condition – whatever indeed that means – will need to prevail.
There’s the gaudy crimson M sign of the METRO and, err, let’s
Go somewhere else and you yomp down these cold stairs and the
Sound changes with the texture of the oxygen and you head through
The grey tunnels with these tiled walls and citric banners con
Quelle parole folli … and then you’re on the deadly space of the platform
And your train’s a-coming in 3 ½ mins and you look at the indigo
Tracks and wonder how easy it’d be to jump off and wait there
With the sooty tubes and those electric bars of however many volts.
The train comes and seventy people get off, seventy go on, through
This scared bustle after the doors slide to and then there’s a beep
Beep beeping to wink the need to not be in the causeway when they shut.
Then la tua fluming under the city at this insane mph speed and your
Headphones are drowned by the gushing rumble of this animal vehicle;
The windows making these flashing reflections of yourself and the
Shapes of other people – women&tots and there’s a fluffy dog – and
You all make a distance across an entire span of a two million metropolitan
Area in thirteen ticks and then there’s this new station to bounce off on.
Construction! This new skyrise’s being erected and there are these
Racy sounds of hammers and machinery and the windows are only frames
And have no glass and the soil around the building is all warred up in brown.
Out from this station and along the roads and your pass the graffitied walls.
These energetic symbols in wonky capital letters; slogans of masses.
Some of them are names of people and you doan know the reference,
Who he or she was and you wonder when the graffiti artists come out
To prowl: coz you never seen them spraying: only see the spray paint.
You get to this super matrix of new highrises next in hard blocks v the sky.
Wondering what the people inside the balconies are like – and many of them
Are athletic it seems, for the bicycles tied to the railings, and many are
Botanical too, for the range of plant pots with the jungle leaves wavering.
“Scusi?” there’s this man that’s just crossed you. Behind you, and you turn:
And take the headphones out again and he jabbers some sentences at you.
He has olive skin and these purple eyebrows and you eventually
Get he’s asking for a cigarette – sure, he can have one – and you
Pop the packet out and hand one over and he says thanks, my friend.
[Just a simple favour for somebody you’ve never met or will see again.]
A mini football field afterwards with these boys taking
Pops at the goals and they’re wearing tops of AC Milan and Internazionale
(and still being friends despite arch rivals) and you find it odd
To be in a country where the soccer quality is actually worldclass.
You hope the lads grow up to be athletes themselves, and you wished
You could join in the game, but that’d be weird, to ask, and your
Wearing these clunky boots and you were never good at football anyway …
Farther down the street there are these posters for art museums either flank.
Neo modern art; bodies in magical forms of despair, all confused by this
Century, and how hover by the bin outside the hostel garden, finishing
A cigarette and listening to those chaps footballing in the park and
Wondering where to go afterwards and marvelling at the wealth of Europe.

Finding You - Part Four
Feat. Josh Anderson
Tumblr media
Part One // Part Two // Part Three
Word Count: 4,926
Warnings: smut
A/N: I’ve been looking forward to writing this part for awhile, so hopefully you enjoy it. Listen to Never Be Like You by Flume & Kai while you read :)
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Oh, gosh. You hadn’t even opened your eyes up, but you could already feel your head throbbing violently. Blinking open, it took you a second to remember exactly what happened last night, and things were still fuzzy. You remembered challenging Josh that he couldn’t find you, going to the bar with Kate, getting extremely drunk and then Josh wiping off your makeup. Other than that, you weren’t completely sure what went down.
The pain in your head distracted you from the feeling of a warm body behind you. Based on what little you did remember, you figured it was Josh. He must have really taken care of you last night if you decided to break your own rule and let him stay. Rolling over with a groan, you turned to see him peacefully asleep next to you.
Josh had only been able to convince you to stay the night at his place a few times, and he had always been up before you because you were not a morning person. This was the first time you got to see him asleep and you took the time to really take him in. His hair, that you loved to run your hands through so much, was disheveled from his sleep. It made him look so much younger and for a second you could imagine what a teenage Josh looked like. Your hands itched to reach out and run your fingers through the soft strands, but you also didn’t want to wake him. His lips, so full and soft, were parted slightly and would move he breathed out little puffs of air. A flush covered his cheeks, making them rosy, while his stubble made you want to kiss his jawline.
Josh was shirtless and in a pair of his boxer briefs, but he must’ve been overheated because all of the blankets were kicked off of his body and on you. One of his hands was tucked into the waistband of his briefs, making you chuckle, while the other was laid across his defined chest.
Oh, gosh, you thought again. A wave of pain hit your head and you felt yourself getting extremely nauseous. You quickly stood up and looked around your room to find the little trash can you had. Spotting it, you walked over and fell to the ground, hunching over when heaves started to wrack your body.
“Shit,” you moaned out, vomiting into the trash can. Your stomach and head both ached so bad, making you wish the pain would just stop. It was a girls night out, so it didn’t exactly surprise you that you were hungover, but this was abnormal.
“Y/N?” Josh called out with a sleepy voice from behind you, waking up from the sounds of you getting sick. “Fuck, baby.”
Josh’s voice sounded panicked and you quickly felt his hand wrap around your hair to hold it back. “Get away, I don’t want you to see me like this.”
“Nothing I haven’t seen before,” Josh murmured, while his hand rubbed at your back. The feeling soothed you and soon the heaves stopped. When your stomach felt a moment of relief, you sat back on your heels hoping the nausea was over.
“What are you talking about?” you questioned him, confused when you had never gotten drunk enough to be sick in front of him before. Josh’s face had a moment of realization and his puppy dog eyes got a sad look in them.
“Y/N, you were drugged last night,” Josh told you quietly, still rubbing your back gently. “At least, that’s what Kate and I think. I was trying to find you and before I could I got a call from Kate to come get you because you were barely coherent. She thinks the guys you were dancing with drugged out.”
Thoughts of what could have happened if Kate and Josh hadn’t been there to save you entered your mind, raising the hair on your arms. Another wave of sickness hit you suddenly, and you bolted back over the trash can. The burn of stomach acid in your throat was all you could feel, numbness spreading through you.
You were always careful when out at the bars and the fact that this happened only made you feel extremely stupid. If you had just cut the games with Josh then you wouldn’t have been there without him, dancing with some random guy to make him jealous.
“I’m sorry,” you said, not even knowing what else to say. You leaned back and rested your head on his shoulder, finding comfort in his warmth.
You felt one of his arms wrap around you and pull you closer, while he leaned down to press a kiss to the top of your head. “Don’t say that. You have nothing to be sorry for, absolutely nothing. Those scumbags are the ones that should pay,” Josh grew increasingly more tense as he spoke and you could tell he was upset.
“No, I’m sorry I put you through that. I shouldn’t have been so naïve,” you explained, reaching up to run a hand through his hair.
Josh let out a deep breath, seeming to mull your words over. “Just,” he paused. “Just, please be more careful if I’m not there. I never want to get a phone call like that again.”
A sense of clarity struck you in this moment, why were you pushing Josh away so hard? He had been nothing but open and respectful, trying to see a vulnerable side of you that you continually denied him. And for what reason?
You were certainly not the type of girl that would ever let an ex define her future relationships, especially when they were the one who fucked you over. Why were you so scared of opening up and giving Josh a chance outside of your little arrangement? He had certainly tried over the last few weeks, always asking if you wanted to go get food or do something, rather than just having sex.
Josh was someone you had trusted instantly and just knew was a good guy. Even though you were continually denying him more, he was still so patient and still tried to get you to open up.
Let’s be honest, the fact the idea of getting into another relationship and losing yourself scared you. Terrified you, really. You had changed so much since breaking up with your ex, but you still needed to trust your instincts. If everything inside was screaming that Josh was worth it, why couldn’t you just let yourself be happy?
“Penny for your thoughts, Y/N?” Josh said, pulling you out of your thoughts.
“Just thinking of how grateful I am you were there,” you told him quietly, not wanting to confess too much. While he had made it clear that he more than to be just fucking, he never said he wanted a relationship. Your revelation felt good, and you knew that you wanted to try to open up more, but you also didn’t want to rush anything.
You felt Josh’s hand on your jaw, tilting your chin up towards him. He pressed a kiss once to your forehead and another to your nose. “I’d kiss you, but you were just sick,” he teased with a chuckle.
With what little energy you had, you lightly slapped him on his stomach, pretending to be offended. “Way to kill the mood.”
“C’mon, lets get you a shower and breakfast,” Josh lifted you to your feet. “I’m sure you’ll feel better and then we can talk more.”
You led Josh towards your bathroom, although at this point he clearly knew where it was since he took care of you last night. You walked over to the sink and dug a spare toothbrush out of a drawer. “No one likes morning breath either.”
Josh finally felt relaxed, letting his head tilt back with laughter. “Touché.”
The two of you stood side by side, brushing your teeth, which was much more domesticated than you thought possible. “Ok, I need to show-,” you started to say, when Josh captured your lips in a kiss.
“Fuck Y/N,” he mumbled against your lips. “I’ve wanted to do that since I saw you yesterday.”
You moaned around his lips, letting yourself get lost in the kiss. His lips were soft and tender, but eager and demanding - just like him, really. The second her touched you, it left you wanting more. You ran your hands up his bare chest and into his thick hair, pulling on the stands. Josh groaned into your mouth and it made you smile, knowing it was a weak spot of his.
When you finally came up for air, Josh’s lips were swollen and your breath was coming in spurts. “Shower. Now.”
Josh was still only in his boxer briefs and you could see the outline of his hard cock pressing against the material. He pulled your sleep shirt over your head, leaving you standing in only your panties. The second your shirt was off Josh was back on you, sucking and nibbling at your neck. You could feel every single place where he was touching you, like flames scorching through your skin.
“I could stay like this with you...” Josh murmured in your ear softly, trailing off as he leaned back and pressed another kiss to your lips. Kicking off the last of your clothes, you took his hand and led him into your shower.
It was a tight fit with both of you in your small shower, but Josh didn’t seem to mind having to be so close. Water poured over the two of you, wetting your hair and running down to stream off of your breasts. Josh groaned at the sight, leaning down to suck on your wet nipples. The sensations of his mouth on your skin was overwhelming, making you moan.
Once he had teased you for long enough, Josh claimed your mouth again in a wet, demanding kiss. You explored each other with your tongues and mouths until you could barely breathe, your lungs burning from the lack of air.
You threaded your hands through his hair, tilting his head back so you had access to his neck. Your mouth wandered until you found his pulse, taking extra time to suck on the sensitive skin.
“Fuckkkk baby,” Josh groaned, encouraging you to suck harder. Reaching down, you gripped his cock in your small hand, running your fingers over the sensitive head. His fingers trailed down your stomach, to find your pussy wet and throbbing. Your breath caught between a sigh and a moan at the feeling of him pushing two fingers inside of you.
Your eyes met with a force that sent shockwaves through your body, the intimacy of the moment too much. The need to feel him inside of you became too much and you moved so your back was against the wall. Josh clearly got the hint, but hesitated. “Y/N, I need to grab a condom.”
You could barely make out his words over the feeling of his fingers on your clit, rubbing in circles. “No, it’s fine. I’m on birth control and I trust you,” you whispered to him, thinking back to earlier when you promised yourself to give this a real shot.
The look in Josh’s blue eyes at that moment, you wished you could see it every day for the rest of your life. A shy smile broke out across his face and he pressed a quick kiss to your lips. His strong hands cupped beneath your ass and you jumped up into his arms, wrapping your legs around his waist.
You could feel the hardness of his cock between your legs, so close to entering you. Looking back up at his face, a crackle of energy passed through the two of you. Raw and carnal. Working your fingers back into his hair, you tugged just as he pushed into you, a small sign leaving your lips.
“I love that sound,” Josh whispered in your ear, starting to move. The look of confusion on your face must have been enough to tell him you didn’t understand what he was talking about. “When I your pussy takes my cock or you come, this little breath leaves your lips and it’s the sexiest thing ever.”
Unsure of what to say to that, you started to rock your hips, encouraging him to move. Josh groaned when he hit the end of you, so deep it almost hurt. Almost. The feeling of your wet skin sliding on one another and you fully seated on his cock - you had never felt such deep satisfaction.
Josh watched you with every roll of his hips, gauging your response as he started a slow and steady rhythm in and out of you. You could feel the impending climax beginning as your thighs tightened around his waste and your breaths became more shallow.
Your eyes never left one another. Not even when they glazed over as the sensations became to much and you came around his cock. Ragged murmurs of pleasure left Josh’s lips as he came hard, your pussy tightening around his cock and milking it. His hand braced the two of you on the wall as his forehead dropped down onto your shoulder. Needing a minute to catch his breath, you brought your hand up to run through his wet strands. Josh started to leave little kisses on your skin as he came back to reality. Your legs were shaky as he set you back on your feet, but you didn’t have much time to think about it before he started to massage your scalp with shampoo.
“Ohhh, babe that feels so good,” you said, humming to yourself at the feeling of his strong fingers massaging your scalp.
After rinsing your head, you were eager to be able to wash his thick hair. You had to stand on the tip of your toes to reach the top of his had, earning a chuckle from Josh. He soon realized you were struggling and tipped his head back to help you out. Soaping up your loofa, Josh ran it over every inch of your body, ensuring that you were clean.
Once the two of you were clean, you stepped out of the shower to dig out towels from your drawer. Josh dried you both off and then wrapped a towel around his waist, while you grabbed your bath towel.
Stepping out of the bathroom, you grabbed Josh’s hand and pulled him back to your room. Josh put on his clothes then laid back down on your bed. You could feel his eyes on your skin as you dug through your closet to grab something to wear.
“So, what are your plans for the day?” Josh asked, fiddling with the throw pillow you had on your bed. His questioned seemed quiet, nervous almost, and you thought back to yesterday when he asked the same thing after stopping by.
“Oh uh, my parents are coming to visit for dinner so I’m seeing them,” you told him, absentmindedly. You hadn’t even thought of the words that came out of your mouth before speaking them, suddenly worried he would be scared off.
“What are they like?” Josh asked, catching you off guard with a question you were not expecting.
“They’re a lot,” you took a second to think over your answer, wanting to be kind but honest. “My mom and I aren’t super close, so I mostly just talk to my dad when they visit. They try to be nosy, so I keep my private life to myself.”
“That’s sad, I couldn’t imagine not being close with my mom,” Josh said. You turned to him, pulling on a shirt and grabbing a pair of leggings.
“Well yeah, but that’s because I bet you’re a momma’s boy,” you teased, guessing you hit the nail on the head if his reaction said anything. “My siblings and I are all close, so it doesn’t really bother me.”
You could feel Josh’s eyes reading you, so you turned away to start brushing out your hair. “Yeah it does, but that’s ok.”
After you were both dressed, you took Josh downstairs to cook breakfast. It really should have been lunch, because it was almost noon, but your favorite meal of the day was breakfast so that’s what you made.
Kate was in the kitchen when you got down there and you immediately walked over to give her a hug. “I’m sorry about last night.”
“Y/N, don’t worry about it,” Kate whispered in your ear, squeezing you a little tighter. Once she let go, she turned to Josh who had sat at one of your barstools. “I talked to the manager of the bar. Good news, they found him on security cameras and they won’t be letting him back anytime soon. Bad news, he paid with cash so they don’t have his information to give the police.”
“That’s bullshit! He can’t just-” Josh started to yell, his anger catching you off guard. He took a deep breath in, trying to calm himself as you walked over to his side. Running a hand over his back, you felt his tense muscles start to loosen.
“Josh, nothing bad happened,” you tried to soothe him. “You and Kate made sure I was fine.”
He heard you words and finally calmed, turning to press and kiss to your lips. “If I see him out, I’ll kill him.”
You chuckled at his comment, but doubted he was joking. “Can I make you some breakfast?”
His eyes softened and he kissed you again. “Sure, baby.”
Kate turned the conversation to a lighter topic, joking with you and Josh as you cooked. When the scrambled eggs were done and you had buttered the toast, you handed Josh his plate of food. “Voila!”
After breakfast, Josh said he needed to get back before their practice. You kissed goodbye and promised to talk later once your parents left.
•••
Josh: How’s dinner?
You: Just getting to the restaurant, wish me luck.
Josh: You don’t need it. Just think of our shower this morning ;)
You: Don’t be a tease.
Your parents and you were seated in a booth at your favorite Italian restaurant in the city, when you finally saw your saving grace walk through the door. Out of all your siblings, you had a special bond with your only brother. The two of you were closest in age and you seemed to always stick together over the years.
He was protective, but not overbearing, and always trusted your decisions. It was hard when you came to Columbus for college and he moved for his job. You tried to always talk at least once a week and plan your trips home around the same time.
“Y/N,” your brother said as you jumped on him for a big hug, earning a laugh from him. “I missed you too.”
“Hey Aaron,” you looked back to take him in, noticing the worry lines on his eyes a little more prominent. “Stop working so much, I can tell you’re stressed.”
His presence made the dinner with your parents much more enjoyable and conversation flowed easily. From your table in the restaurant you could see the kitchen, bar and entrance. You laughed at something your dad had said and took a sip of your wine.
As you set your glass back down, Josh caught your eye walking in the door. Your breath caught, causing you to choke on the wine and you desperately tried not to cough too loudly.
You felt every bone in your body go still, waiting to see who followed Josh into the restaurant. When it was just Seth and Boone that walked in behind him, you let out a sigh, grateful you weren’t about to find him on a date with another girl.
“Y/N,” your mom called to you, looking around to see what had your attention. “Are you ok?”
You snapped back into reality, not wanting her to know it was Josh you were looking at. “Oh, yeah. Sorry, I thought I saw someone.”
The waitress brought over your food and all the attention on your weird behavior shifted to her. After that, you tried not to glance over at Josh and the boys eating, but it was hard. Time to time, you could feel Josh burning holes into your skin. At one point, the two of you locked eyes and the muscle in his jaw tightened. Why was he pissed?
You thought over the whole day, trying to find anything that would make him upset. When he left your house earlier, things were fine. Perfect, really. You two seemed like you finally were on the same page with one another. Was he upset with you about last night? After sharing a piece of cheesecake with your brother, you decided you couldn’t take Josh’s angry glances anymore.
“I need to go say hi to a friend,” you told your family as they were gathering their things to leave. “I’ll meet you guys out front.”
Getting up, you walked over to the table where Josh, Seth and Boone were enjoying their third bottle of wine. Boone’s eyes went wide when he saw you approaching, and he reached over to hit Josh with a warning.
“Hey boys,” you greeted them all and they all reciprocated the greeting, all of them except for Josh. “Is there a problem?”
Clearly, your question was directed at Josh, so Boone and Seth glanced towards each other with wide eyes.
“Nope,” Josh murmured. That’s it? Nope. That’s all the response he was going to give you?
“Well, I just came to say hi,” you decided to talk to Boone and Seth, since Josh was going to ignore you. “My parents and brother are in town for the evening so we were getting dinner.”
You could see a look of realization flash across Josh’s face, his features softening.
“Y/N, I-“ he started to finally speak, but you cut him off.
“See you guys later,” you turned away and walked out of the restaurant to say goodbye to your family.
“Who was that, honey?” you mom dug, seeing the upset look on your face.
“Just some friends,” giving her no more information, she dropped the subject.
You and Aaron said goodbye to your mom and dad, promising to come home and see them soon. Aaron was staying at your place tonight since he had an event in the city the next day. Waiting around for the Uber, you could feel his eyes on you. “So who was that?”
Leave it to Aaron to dig for answers, although you knew his intentions were well. “Just some guy I’m seeing - or thought I was seeing.”
“Well he’s watching you,” Aaron nodded over your should towards the restaurant window. Your skin itched to turn around and see his face, knowing he felt like an ass.
“I think he thought you were my date,” you laughed with Aaron over Josh’s mistake.
“Poor guy must have it bad,” Aaron told you, searching your face for a reaction.
“I’m mad at him right now but he really is a good guy,” you ensured Aaron, just as the Uber pulled up. Aaron got the door for you and at the same time you heard the restaurant door ding as it opened.
“Y/N,” Josh called out from behind you. Rather than pushing any further, he surprised you by walking up to Aaron. “I’m Josh, these are my friends Seth and Boone.”
“Aaron, I’m Y/N’s older brother,” he told them, shaking each of their hands.
“Can we talk?” Josh asked you, and you felt all of their eyes on you.
Before you had a chance to answer him, Aaron spoke up. “I’m going to go back to your place, Y/N. I have a key so take as much time as you want.”
You gave him a mean stare, mad that he was forcing you to talk to Josh. Not allowing you a chance to argue, he hoped into the Uber and it drove away.
“I like him,” Josh chuckled, earning a laugh from Boone and Seth.
“Well, I don’t right now.”
You followed the boys to Josh’s car, getting into the front seat. Josh dropped Seth and Boone off at their place’s and then pulled into the parking garage of his condo. When he put the car in park, he finally started to speak. “Y/N, I’m sorry.”
Expecting you to say something, he paused, but you stayed quiet, forcing him to continue.
“I’m sorry I made assumptions about who your brother was, and that I didn’t trust you. I should have trusted you. I just-,” he hesitated. “After this morning, I thought we had gotten so far. And you never mentioned having dinner with him, just your parents. So when I saw him, I assumed the worse.”
“Exactly, Josh. You assumed the worse,” you started, not nearly finished with you angry rant. “And this morning was the closest we have been. You think I’d let you fuck me raw one minute, and then have another guy meet my parents the next?” your voice raised, and at your last comment you saw Josh visibly wince.
“I know, I’m sorry. Fuck-“ Josh sighed, running a hand over his face. “How many times do I have to say that I fucked up? I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions.”
“Josh, I was finally starting to feel better after breaking up with my ex,” you started to tell him. “I felt independent again, like myself. But then you come along and consume me. What if I lose myself again?”
You didn’t expect to see the anger that crossed his face, his grip on the wheel tightening. “Do you think you’re special? That you’re the only one who’s ever been hurt by someone? News flash, you aren’t! Stop using it as an excuse because you won’t get over the past and trust another guy.”
His words hit the nail on the head, cutting into you. “How dare you? You don’t even know me Josh!”
“Because you won’t let me! You don’t think I’m scared? I’ve been hurt, too. But I’m making the decision to trust my judgement that you won’t be like the last girl who used me.”
You didn’t even know how to respond to his words, leaving you both breathing heavily in the silence of his car. He was right, you couldn’t argue that. All of your decisions had been fueled by fear. This morning you felt like you were finally ready, and then the second you have a little argument you use it as an excuse to close back up.
“Take me home,” you told him quietly.
“No,” Josh begged next to you. “Please don’t leave like this.”
“Josh, I’m not mad. You’re right, and I’m sorry. I just need to think, so please take me home,” you asked him again.
Starting up his car, Josh drove out of his parking garage and towards your house. You took the time to think about the last 24 hours and everything that had happened.
Josh had taken care of your last night and you woke up this morning so grateful for him.
You realized that he had done nothing wrong, and yet you were constantly denying him yourself. He had always asked to hang out or do things, rather than just fuck like you were trying to keep it. And yet, you had still been shutting him out.
That realization made you want to open up to him, and give this relationship a fair chance. When he left your house after showering and breakfast, you felt like you were on cloud nine, and couldn’t remember being happier.
And now? You shut down again for no reason, other than miscommunication and a small argument. Josh was right when he yelled at you in the car at his place. You weren’t the only person that had even been hurt by a relationship, and surely there had been girls that tried to take advantage of his status as a professional athlete. But he still trusted you, so why couldn’t you do the same for him?
You were still thinking as he pulled up to the front of your house. Turning to him, you started to speak but stopped, not quiet sure what to say. You took a second to think over the right words. “I’m going to spend tomorrow with Aaron, so I won’t be able to see you.”
Josh started to speak, but you cut him off. “Just give me some time to think. You were right, and I haven’t been fair to you. I just need to figure out some things, but this isn’t me saying goodbye.”
“It feels like it is,” he murmured quietly, the hurt look in his eyes too much.
You didn’t know what to say to show him that you weren’t giving up, so instead you leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his lips.
“I promise it’s not Josh, I couldn’t give you up if I wanted to.”
With that you left the car, not turning around for a second glance as you made your way onto the porch. Unlocking your door, you opened it and fell back against it as it closed.
Pulling out your phone, you sent him a text. A promise that you just needed time.
You: I’m bad with words, so listen to Never Be Like You by Flume. Hopefully this can show how I’m feeling, see you soon.

[Image Description: three digital drawings rendered to look like oil paintings. 1. a painting of keyleth. she is a regal looking half elf with pale white skin and long wavy orange hair. she is wearing a light teal gown that coveres her chest in two long vertical strips of satin held together by a golden belt. across her shoulders is a cloak of autumn leaves and on her head is a white rack of antlers adorned by spring flowers. she is holding her staff of gnarled wood. in the hook at the top of the staff sits a glowing shard of light blue crystal. 2. a painting of pike. she is a soft-muscled white gnome with stark white hair held back in a long neat braid. she is smiling goofily at the viewer with one hand playing with the flyaways of her hair and the other holding her amulet of serenrae. she is wearing a knit shawl in fuchsia and purple that is wrapped tightly around her shoulders. underneath the shawl she is wearing a periwinkle gown that puffs out at the hips. 3. a painting of scanlan. he is a toned brown skinned gnome. he is smirking lasciviously of camera with a wink. his wavy brown hair is pulled partially back in a low ponytail and his moustache is curled. he is wearing a purple satin beret adorned with a flume of feathers and a green eyeball gem. he is wearing a fully unbuttoned purple doublet, fuchsia sash, fuchsia pants and a golden belt. he is in the process of drawing his decorative sword. I had the utmost joy and honour to draw some beloved familiar faces for the new Tal'Dorei Reborn book by Darrington Press. My vision for an older Keyleth, Pike and Scanlan, rendered in 'oil' paintings.

The Heart - Part Two - Roman Godfrey
(Nerd!Reader X Roman Godfrey)
Part One
“I’ll see you at six, nerd,” he said, giving you a playful grin. You rolled your eyes as he walked off, people gawking at you as you turned back to your locker. Like always, you didn’t care that they stared. You could care less. All you were thinking about was what to wear.
After tutoring Roman, with a degree of success, it was time to complete the deal you made. It was time for your date.
A/N: Thank you for all the kind words on the first part! Roman is hella smooth btw (sorry for the horrible ending.)
Tumblr media
You studied your reflection in the bathroom mirror, making sure your outfit was orderly. Your hair was fixed up, after what felt like hours of manipulating it. For once in your life, you felt that you looked great. The outfit you changed into after school was comfortable; dark pants and a light tee shirt that paired well with the jacket you had resting over your shoulder.
Maybe it was too simple. The nerves you had felt during the school day returned. You could still hear Roman’s voice in your ear telling you to “wear something nice.” This outfit wasn’t nice enough, you thought to yourself. You rushed back into your bedroom, throwing clothes everywhere in the search of just the right outfit. You settled on a soft sweater, voting to keep the dark pants you already had on.
Making your way back to the bathroom, you felt more content with your wardrobe choice. It was a bulky sweater, making you look small and keeping you warm. It’s soft, colored hue made your eyes pop. Much better. You fixed your hair again, repairing the damage you had done when you changed into the sweater.
You had started walking down the stairs of your home when you heard a honk. You leaned over a chair and peered out of the window. You saw a small, old-fashion car in the driveway. It’s top was down and you could see Roman waiting for you in the driver’s seat.
Nearly tripping out of the door, you made your way to Roman’s car. He was now standing outside of the car, waiting for you so he could open the passenger side door. When his eyes fell on you, his lips parted for a moment.
“Hi,” you said, your shyness showing through. You brushed a hand through your hair and Roman smiled softly down at you.
“Hey, you ready to go?” He pushed himself off his car, which he was leaning against. You took in his attire; dark pants and a navy blue button up. His hair looked styled, up more than down. The most attractive feature however, was his soft, close lipped smile.
“Yeah,” you said and Roman opened the car door. Before you sat down, Roman leaned towards you, his breath tickling your neck.
“You look great,” he whispered lowly. You blushed and smiled at him, hoping that you seemed even the slightest bit confident.
“So do you,” you replied, surprised your voice didn’t falter. Roman grinned and bit his bottom lip as you sat down in his car. He shut the door and walked back over to the drivers side. “So what do you have planned?” You asked, trying to remain calm.
“You’ll see,” Roman said with a smirk. He started the car and backed up and out of your driveway. He put on the radio, tuning it to a light rock station at low volume. The now sunset colored sky of Hemlock Grove soared above you as Roman drove through town.
“You did great on your test,” you said, turning to face Roman. “I’m proud of you,” your words brought a wide smile to his face.
“I have you to thank for that grade,” he said, his hands tightening around the steering wheel as he spoke. “I would’ve failed without you.” You blushed at his statement, turning to look outside the car. You were on a country road, at least it looked like one. Towering trees loomed over the road ahead of you, spicing the air with the scent of pine.
The rest of the car ride went on without a hitch. You did your best to deal with awkward silences and Roman was just Roman. He was flirtatious and, or so it seemed to you, happy.
“So you’re not going to tell me where you’re taking me?” You asked as the terrain around you seemed to grow more unfamiliar by the second.
“Nope,” Roman said, popping the ‘p’. You turned to look at him, brows furrowed but saw that he was grinning at the road before the car.
“Are we at least close to where you’re taking me to?” Roman let out a chuckle and glanced at you. His green eyes were bright, catching your eyes before he looked back to the road. “You’re not saying anything?”
“You and your silly questions,” Roman said, shaking his head lightly. “Just enjoy the ride, Y/N. Don’t stress, this isn’t school ya know. You don’t have to prepare for a test.” You smiled at his analogy and teasing tone. Roman took a turn down a forest path suddenly, and your confusion on the location only worsened.
“Roman,” you said, your tone catching his attention, “where are we?” The evergreen trees towered over the car, hiding the now darkening sky. You had only been driving for twenty minutes, but the dusk was turning quickly into night.
“We’re here,” Roman said, turned off the car and turning to you. He wore a smug smile, “not so bad, huh?” You turned and looked out the windshield. You got out of the car and walked over to the cliff’s edge. The sleepy town of Hemlock Grove seemed even smaller from the height; your worries were nonexistent.
“It’s beautiful,” you murmured as you looked to the sky. The startings of stars started poking through the sky. You felt a warmth spread on your lower back, causing you to glance behind you. Roman’s hand rested against your back and he was smiling down at you.
“I thought you would like it,” he said his green eyes seemed darker in the fading light. Your mind flashed to the rumors you had heard over the last two years; how Roman slept around and never looked back at the hearts he broke. You didn’t want to be one of those girls.
You turned back to the scene before you with a slight frown on your lips. Roman seemed to sense your change and walked back over to the car. You turned your head and watched him sit on the hood of his car. Roman pulled out a cigarette out of a pack and lit it.
“Those will kill you,” you said, walking over to him. He let out a puff of smoke, watching as you sat beside him. “Your lungs will turn black and bounce like a rubber ball.”
“You know how to set the mood,” Roman chuckled, taking another drag from his cigarette. Feeling your ears turn red, you glanced away from him.
“Sorry,” you said, your nervous feeling coiling in your stomach. Some date you were. You gazed down at your shoes, trying to think of a way to dig yourself out of this hole.
“Do you want to know why I wanted to go on this date with you?” Roman asked suddenly, bringing your attention back to his face. You remained silent, but Roman took this as a sign to continue. “People don’t know anything about you,” he said, looking down at you, “I asked around too. Nothing.”
“Oh?” You asked, confused by what point he was trying to make.
“I’d see you in the hall and wonder what was going through your head. Then I heard you were a Peer Tutor.” He took another drag from his cigarette. “I didn’t need help with Anatomy,” he admitted, catching you completely off guard.
“What?” Roman smiled at you, then looked out to the sky as the last bits of sunset disappeared. Lights lining the cliff flickered to life, bathing the two of you in a low glow.
“I know the heart,” Roman continued, “I just wanted to know yours.” The instant he spoke, a blush spread across your entire face. Roman saw this and grinned. “You’re cute when you get all flustered, nerd.” He reached his free hand out and brushed the back of his knuckles against your warmed cheek. You longed to melt into the touch, but you turned away from it.
“So you just wanted to…”
“Get to know you,” Roman said, he turned and took another drag, letting the smoke flume out of his mouth. “Now I do,” he tone lacked any emotion.
“You could have just come up and talked to me!” You exclaimed, a little anger shining through in your voice. “Like a normal person would! Instead you played dumb just to…” you gripped the long sleeves of your sweater tightly to keep from shouting.
“What can I say?” Roman drawled, “my mother was an actress.” You were tempted to wipe the smirk off his face, his handsome face that you wanted to kiss. Your nostrils flared a little in anger, not just towards Roman but anger at yourself.  There was a reason you didn’t close to your peers, and it seemed that Roman was no different after all.
You held your arms close to your sides, crossing them across your chest. Roman’s jaw clenched at the sight. He didn’t mean to make you angry; he just didn’t know how to talk to you. No one knew anything about you.
“I’m not some mystery for you to solve and forget about,” you said, turning just enough so he could hear you clearly. The wind picked up slightly, sending a chill down your spine; but by now, you were used to the coldness. You looked out to the dim city lights that illuminated the streets of your home town. From the cliff, the High School could pass as a small storage facility.
“Here,” before you could turn around to object to whatever Roman was doing, he wrapped a jacket over your shoulders. He stood next to you, looking out at Hemlock Grove. The White Tower stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the surrounding forests.
“I won’t forget you,” he said suddenly, “you’re too yourself to be forgotten. You don’t try to blend in, you just are you.” He turned to face you now, “people think that they know me. You’ve heard the rumors, the truths.”
“Yeah, but that’s not who you are,” you said, meeting his gaze.
“It is,” he said, “I thought that maybe, a beautiful mystery like yourself could change that.” He held your gaze and for an instant, you thought you saw a glimmer of hope flash across his face. “Do you think you can?”
He held out one of his hands and you glanced at it. You looked up and met his gaze once more. He licked his lips, almost like his was nervous. You felt a soft smile bloom on your lips and you nodded. Instead of taking his hand however, you leaned up on your tippy toes.
You brushed your lips against his and Roman’s extended hand immediately went to your face. He cupped your cheek and pulled your lips fully against his own. The kiss was rough, but you found a softness in his touch that made up for it.
“I can try,” your murmured against his lips, “I’m just a tutor, after all.” Roman let out a breathy chuckle and shook his head. He pecked at your lips again before resting his forehead to your own. He smiled down at you, his thumb tracing your cheekbone.
“You’re so much more than a tutor, Y/N,” your name sounded like heaven falling from his lips. You leaned forward again, pressing your lips to his with confidence. With the sun completely gone, the stars danced in it’s place; and two hearts became one.

Mr Willow
There was nothing spectacular about Mr Willow. He worked at a chemicals plant most of his adult life and had few friends and his family weren’t especially interested in him and he had no wife or ex wife or kids of his own. Was a nice guy, though. He donated bits of his income to charities, each month. And he paid to have trees planted in different parts of the country. He was kind to his dog. And animals in general; he didn’t eat meat or dairy products and he didn’t see the point in horror films and things that he heard about in the news genuinely upset him rather than being mere words and statistics. The chemicals plant allowed Willow two weeks of holiday per annum. He booked the hols hours for the full fortnight, for May the next year; and then he booked a trip around Europe, to go to Lisbon, Milan, Bratislava and Valencia – thinking those a good selection. He selected places to stay and got those travel books and picked out places he wanted to visit whilst in each city and ogled pics of the sights on the web and it was all mega exciting and he was really looking forward to going, all the way through the winter months and past the Christmas which he spent on his own, and the storms in the spring and the general decaying solitude of his existence. Then it got to May. He was on holiday. Cheerful weather. Willow locked his flat up and set out for the airport. Made him feel like he was in boyhood again, on the upper deck of the bus as it zoomed him out of the city and into the fields and at the end there was the airport tower; and he got off the bus and went into the flush wild noisy glee of the airport; three thousand people in a big building and all heading in different places. His flight to Lisbon was in two hours. Willow went through the security without any mishap whatsoever. Didn’t get buzzed on the scanners, nothing. Then went and sat in one of the bars and the drink he bought was mighty expensive but that didn’t matter. When the flight was announced, Willow was the first in the queue to board. He got on the plane. There was little delay and then the plane was geared up on the runway and then fluming down it and it picked up and ascended from the earth with angelic zeal and then was in the air and ploughing up and within minutes he could see the matchbox sizes of the houses in the city below him and everything seemed perfect and the plane ventured forward and he couldn’t recall a time in recent memory where he’d been as happy. He didn’t put his music on or read his book; it was tranquil enough to sit and watch through the window. And the plane came to the border of the country and then there was the North Sea in enormous blue; and the clouds were these orange and yellow and white puffs of glory in perfect paintings across the span. Within an hour their plane was soaring across the Atlantic. Willow was still watching out the window. When there was a loud BANG somewhere behind him. Which startled everybody, made people flinch and one woman shriek. Willow looked around to see what had made such a sound, and other people were looking, too; he watched the fear on their faces. Then there was a second bang! Louder than the first … [The news bulletin the following morning partially read thus: All 140 passengers and crew on an Edinburgh to Lisbon flight are feared dead after the plane suffered technical problems and crashed into the Atlantic. Authorities are searching for survivors.]
