The ER-localized protein, FT INTERACTING PROTEIN1 (FTIP1), is required for FT movement into the phloem translocation stream, which takes it to the meristem (Figure 20.9). (...) Both of these targets activate LEAFY (LFY; a floral identity gene we will discuss later in this chapter), and LFY directly activates the expression of AP1 and FD, forming two positive feedback loops (see Figure 20.19). (...) Genetic studies have shown that there are four distinct developmental pathways that control flowering in the LDP Petunia (see Figure 20.19):
The photoperiodic pathway behind in the leaf and involves phytochromes and cryptochromes. (Note that phyA and phyB have contrasting effects on flowering.) In LDPs under long-day conditions, the interaction of these photoreceptors with the circadian clock initiates a pathway that results in the expression of CO in the phloem companion cells of the leaf. CO activates the expression of its downstream target gene, FT, in the phloem. FT protein ("florigen") moves into the sieve tube elements and is translocated to the apical meristem, where it stimulates flowering. As shown in the enlargement of the meristem in Figure 20.19, FT protein forms a complex with the transcription factor FD. The FD-FT complex then activates downstream target genes such as SOC1, AP1, and LFY, which turn on floral homeotic genes on the flanks of the inflorescence meristem.
In rice, a SDP, the CO homolog Heading-date 1 (Hd1) acts as an inhibitor of flowering. During inductive short day conditions, however, Hd1 protein is not produced. The absence of Hd1 stimulates the expression of the Hd3a gene in the phloem companion cells (Hd3a is a relative of FT). Hd3a protein is then translocated via the sieve tubes to the apical meristem, where it is believed to stimulate flowering by pathway similar to that in Arabidopsis.
In the autonomous and vernalization pathways, flowering occurs either in response to internal signals – the production of a fixed number of leaves – or to low temperatures. In the autonomous pathway of Arabidopsis, all of the genes associated with the pathway are expressed in the meristem. The autonomous pathway acts by reducing the expression of the flowering repressor gene FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC), an inhibitor of SOC1 expression. Vernalization also represses FLC, but by a different mechanism (an epigenetic switch). Because the FLC gene is a common target, the autonomous and vernalization pathways are grouped together.
The gibberellin pathway is required for early flowering and for flowering under noninductive short days. The gibberellin pathway involves GA-MYB as an intermediary, which promotes LFY; gibberellin may also interact with SOC1 by a separate pathway.
All four pathways converge by increasing the expression of key floral regulators: FT in the vasculature and SOC1, LFY, and AP1 in the meristem (see Figure 20.19).

Seaweed Extract Triggers Early Flowering in Plants
Seaweed Extract Triggers Early Flowering in Plants https://ift.tt/gNRmvlG Controlling when plants to bloom can have benefits for agriculture and there are things that can help, but it would be useful to know how they work. Bahmani & Prithiviraj examined Ascophyllum nodosum extract (ANE) and the seaweed’s effect on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. They found that adding one part in a thousand of ANE was enough to induce flowering, thanks to the solution’s effect on a genetic pathway related to plant age. Bahmani & Prithiviraj found that adding ANE to the plants triggered upregulation in key flowering time genes: FT (FLOWERING LOCUS T), SOC1 (SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS 1), and LFY (LEAFY). It also decreased the expression levels of MIR156A and MIR156C, which inhibit the flowering process. The key chemical appears to be fucoidan, which the plant confuses with some simple sugars that trigger the changes in gene expression. The botanists found this out by growing Arabidopsis plants with different amounts of seaweed extract. They counted leaves and days until the plants flowered, and looked at how active flowering-related genes were. They also used plants with standard genes and with extra copies of key flowering genes. While we primarily attribute the observed effects to fucoidan, it is plausible that other bioactive compounds also contribute to the regulatory networks involved. ANEs are complex mixtures comprising a diverse range of bioactive constituents, including amino acids, phenolics, vitamins, osmolytes, phytohormones, and hormone-like substances. Ok!
In the majority of species individual flowers have both pistils and stamens. These flowers are described by botanists as being perfect, bisexual, or hermaphrodite. However, in some species of plants the flowers are imperfect or unisexual: having only either male (stamens) or female (pistil) parts. In the latter case, if an individual plant is either female or male the species is regarded as dioecious. However, where unisexual male and female flowers appear on the same plant, the species is called monoecious.[20] Many flowers have nectaries, which are glands that produce a sugary fluid used to attract pollinators. They are not considered as an organ on their own.[21]
Inflorescence
Main article: Inflorescence
The calla lily is not a single flower. It is actually an inflorescence of tiny flowers pressed together on a central stalk that is surrounded by a large petal-like bract.[22]
In those species that have more than one flower on an axis, the collective cluster of flowers is called an inflorescence. Some inflorescences are composed of many small flowers arranged in a formation that resembles a single flower. The common example of this is most members of the very large composite (Asteraceae) group. A single daisy or sunflower, for example, is not a flower but a flower head—an inflorescence composed of numerous flowers (or florets).[23] An inflorescence may include specialized stems and modified leaves known as bracts.[24]
Floral diagrams and formulae
Main articles: Floral formula and Floral diagram
A floral formula is a way to represent the structure of a flower using specific letters, numbers and symbols, presenting substantial information about the flower in a compact form. It can represent a taxon, usually giving ranges of the numbers of different organs, or particular species. Floral formulae have been developed in the early 19th century and their use has declined since. Prenner et al. (2010) devised an extension of the existing model to broaden the descriptive capability of the formula.[25] The format of floral formulae differs in different parts of the world, yet they convey the same information.[26][27][28][29]
The structure of a flower can also be expressed by the means of floral diagrams. The use of schematic diagrams can replace long descriptions or complicated drawings as a tool for understanding both floral structure and evolution. Such diagrams may show important features of flowers, including the relative positions of the various organs, including the presence of fusion and symmetry, as well as structural details.[30]
Development
A flower develops on a modified shoot or axis from a determinate apical meristem (determinate meaning the axis grows to a set size). It has compressed internodes, bearing structures that in classical plant morphology are interpreted as highly modified leaves.[31] Detailed developmental studies, however, have shown that stamens are often initiated more or less like modified stems (caulomes) that in some cases may even resemble branchlets.[32][13] Taking into account the whole diversity in the development of the androecium of flowering plants, we find a continuum between modified leaves (phyllomes), modified stems (caulomes), and modified branchlets (shoots).[33][34]
Transition
The transition to flowering is one of the major phase changes that a plant makes during its life cycle. The transition must take place at a time that is favorable for fertilization and the formation of seeds, hence ensuring maximal reproductive success. To meet these needs a plant is able to interpret important endogenous and environmental cues such as changes in levels of plant hormones and seasonable temperature and photoperiod changes.[35] Many perennial and most biennial plants require vernalization to flower. The molecular interpretation of these signals is through the transmission of a complex signal known as florigen, which involves a variety of genes, including Constans, Flowering Locus C and Flowering Locus T. Florigen is produced in the leaves in reproductively favorable conditions and acts in buds and growing tips to induce a number of different physiological and morphological changes.[36]
The ABC model of flower development
The first step of the transition is the transformation of the vegetative stem primordia into floral primordia. This occurs as biochemical changes take place to change cellular differentiation of leaf, bud and stem tissues into tissue that will grow into the reproductive organs. Growth of the central part of the stem tip stops or flattens out and the sides develop protuberances in a whorled or spiral fashion around the outside of the stem end. These protuberances develop into the sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Once this process begins, in most plants, it cannot be reversed and the stems develop flowers, even if the initial start of the flower formation event was dependent of some environmental cue.[37]
Organ development
Main article: ABC model of flower development
The ABC model is a simple model that describes the genes responsible for the development of flowers. Three gene activities interact in a combinatorial manner to determine the developmental identities of the primordia organ within the floral apical meristem. These gene functions are called A, B, and C. A genes are expressed in only outer and lower most section of the apical meristem, which becomes a whorl of sepals. In the second whorl both A and B genes are expressed, leading to the formation of petals. In the third whorl, B and C genes interact to form stamens and in the center of the flower C genes alone give rise to carpels. The model is based upon studies of aberrant flowers and mutations in Arabidopsis thaliana and the snapdragon, Antirrhinum majus. For example, when there is a loss of B gene function, mutant flowers are produced with sepals in the first whorl as usual, but also in the second whorl instead of the normal petal formation. In the third whorl the lack of B function but presence of C function mimics the fourth whorl, leading to the formation of carpels also in the third whorl.[38]
Function
See also: Plant reproductive morphology
The principal purpose of a flower is the reproduction of the individual and the species. All flowering plants are heterosporous, that is, every individual plant produces two types of spores. Microspores are produced by meiosis inside anthers and megaspores are produced inside ovules that are within an ovary. Anthers typically consist of four microsporangia and an ovule is an integumented megasporangium. Both types of spores develop into gametophytes inside sporangia. As with all heterosporous plants, the gametophytes also develop inside the spores, i. e., they are endosporic.
In the majority of plant species, individual flowers have both functional carpels and stamens. Botanists describe these flowers as perfect or bisexual, and the species as hermaphroditic. In a minority of plant species, their flowers lack one or the other reproductive organ and are described as imperfect or unisexual. If the individual plants of a species each have unisexual flowers of both sexes then the species is monoecious. Alternatively, if each individual plant has only unisexual flowers of the same sex then the species is dioecious.
Pollination
Main article: Pollination
A Tūī, Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae, feeding on flax flower nectar, with yellow pollen on its forehead
Grains of pollen sticking to this bee will be transferred to the next flower it visits.
The primary purpose of the flower is reproduction.[39] Since the flowers are the reproductive organs of the plant, they mediate the joining of the sperm, contained within pollen, to the ovules — contained in the ovary.[8] Pollination is the movement of pollen from the anthers to the stigma.[40] Normally pollen is moved from one plant to another, known as cross-pollination, but many plants are able to self-pollinate. Cross-pollination is preferred because it allows for genetic variation, which contributes to the survival of the species.[41] Many flowers are dependent, then, upon external factors for pollination, such as: the wind, water, animals, and especially insects. Larger animals such as birds, bats, and even some pygmy possums,[42] however, can also be employed.[43][44] To accomplish this, flowers have specific designs which encourage the transfer of pollen from one plant to another of the same species. The period of time during which this process can take place (when the flower is fully expanded and functional) is called anthesis,[45] hence the study of pollination biology is called anthecology.[46]
Flowering plants usually face evolutionary pressure to optimize the transfer of their pollen, and this is typically reflected in the morphology of the flowers and the behaviour of the plants.[47] Pollen may be transferred between plants via a number of 'vectors,' or methods. Around 80% of flowering plants make use of biotic, or living vectors. Others use abiotic, or non-living, vectors and some plants make use of multiple vectors, but most are highly specialised.[48]
Though some fit between or outside of these groups,[49] most flowers can be divided between the following two broad groups of pollination methods:
*Fascinating!*
Yes, thank you very much!

(Just gonna combine all the Grimmons wedding stuff I have together~)
They called it “The Red Wedding”. Because it was them. Why wouldn’t they?
Everybody else rolled their eyes at the dorky joke, except for Sarge, who thought it was the absolute most fitting title, and was very proud of his boys for using it (nobody had the heart to tell him otherwise).
Donut was the self-appointed decorator, and he absolutely REFUSED to make everything plain red, or go with half orange and half maroon... he finally came up with an acceptable compromise; a gradient of both, creating a beautiful sunset effect with the colors.
Sarge was naturally Simmons’ best man, and Grif chose Tucker because yes; they were bros, but also if he doesn’t give the guy a specific job to do, Tucker would try to take over and drive everybody bonkers (starting with the inevitable clash he’d have with Donut over creative control).
Kai has decided to call herself the Grand High Queen of all Bridesmaids (they tried to tell her that there isn’t a “bride” here, that title doesn’t work, but she does NOT care). She does a good job making sure her brother, and her soon-to-be brother-in-law, look nice for their big day.
Church was trying to act like he didn’t care THAT much, because Grif and Simmons had basically been married for a decade and then some, who even cares... but damn it all, the mushy romantic vibe was GETTING TO HIM. Carolina and Tex kept catching him looking wistfully at some of the decorations (different pictures propped up on tables, showing Grif and Simmons at different ages, some before they met, and many of them together, mapping out their lives). They playfully teased him, making all kinds of ‘how-adorable’ gestures, causing him to shove them away (but he couldn’t hide his grin).
Caboose looked at the gift table, came to the conclusion that it was NOT arranged correctly, and decided to re-stack and move everything around (at first the others worried he might make something that wasn’t structurally sound... but it actually looked really nice, and easy enough to grab a gift without everything falling down). Lopez joined him, instead moving around vases and floral displays; who says robots don’t understand the art of flower arranging?
Wash was enjoying walking around, looking at the food tables, the area where the ceremony would take place, the dance floor... it was very pretty, yes, but also somehow had calming atmosphere. He talked with the others here and there, and mostly just enjoyed how pleasant this all was. Even the chaos when Sarge thought a gift was some kind of booby-trap sent by an assassin, and Donut freaked-out when one of Simmons’ hair-ties snapped. He stood with his friends, listening to them all bicker and joke, and it was still true; oddly charming, even after all these years.
Locus forces himself to stay away from the walls (or else he’ll fall into his habit of trying to hide in the shadows). He offers to help Tucker move a table, but is shooed away, told to simply go relax... he still has trouble doing that, but Carolina sees him struggling, and being a student of chill herself, comes to his rescue.
Doc made sure to hold Donut and Tucker in check, relaying what they were doing to Grif and Simmons, so the actual wishes of the men who were getting married had a chance to be heard. If the others were too dismissive, O’Malley “helped” by knocking over several chairs, thus giving them a problem to fix that didn’t involve throwing glitter everywhere or playing a mix-CD called “Hot Love’n”.
Although there are several lights all around them through the ceremony, Grif recognizes one particular glow that seems to be hanging out in one of the light fixtures; he smiles in that direction as he finally steps out of his changing room, on his way to walk down the aisle. Simmons is there as well, and in front of all their guests, loved ones and friends from Chorus, the two men walk toward each other.
To match with the whole sunset theme, the vows were exchanged as the sun started to go down... and it was perfect for a whole other reason; the proposal had taken place at sunset. It was hard to escape all the sappy symbolism, for a wedding? You had to go all-out.
Grif and Simmons certainly did just that when they recited their personal vows.
First was Grif, followed by Simmons.
“At first, I thought it was funny to annoy you. Because you’re REALLY cute when you get flustered. So, that’s why I kept on messing with you and teasing you. Then, something changed. You started laughing at my jokes instead of just telling me to shut up. That was when I noticed, you’re REALLY cute when you’re happy. So that’s why I kept trying to get you to loosen up and relax. After a while, I realized that I just thought YOU were cute. All the time. It didn’t matter what you did or what you said, it would be the cutest thing I ever saw in my life, and I HATED myself for getting a stupid crush on my friend. I thought if I ignored it, maybe it would go away, but I COULDN’T ignore it, because YOU never went away. You were always right there with me, and you weren’t just cute anymore. It wasn’t just a crush anymore. I fell in love with you, hard. You became everything I wanted, and I hated myself even more, because I thought you’d never want ME. It just seemed impossible that I could ever have MORE… then, something changed again. You finally made me understand that you loved me, too. Suddenly, everything that I thought was impossible was REAL. It isn’t difficult or scary, it is the easiest thing in the world. I can get what I want without being selfish, because I’m also giving you what YOU want. We both want this, we want each other, and now we HAVE each other. Being together motivates me like nothing else, it makes me want to TRY. Loving you, and being loved by you, brings out the best in me…”
“I spent so much of my life feeling alone. For years, I was trying to get anybody to pay attention to me, trying to make friends, trying to impress people. I was never good enough, and nobody ever wanted me. Then I met YOU. No matter how much I tried to push you away, you wouldn’t budge. You wouldn’t leave me alone, you wouldn’t shut up, you drove me CRAZY… and before I even realized it was happening, you turned into the center of my whole world. You were my first real friend, my BEST friend, and so much more. I thought about you constantly, arguments we had, things that made us laugh, you utterly took over my head. You saw me at my worst, you knew all my faults, every single awkward and embarrassing fact of my life, and you still wanted to be around me. I didn’t understand what a big deal that was. I didn’t understand how important you were, or how special you made me feel. Maybe if I hadn’t been alone for so long, I would have been able to figure out why I wanted to say MORE when we talked, why I wanted to get even closer when we were together, why I wanted to hold you and not let go… but even though it took me too long, I’m glad everything happened with you. I’m glad everything happened BECAUSE of you. I needed you my whole life, and didn’t even know it. I don’t have to worry about not being good enough with you. I can actually feel and safe content, knowing without a doubt that we love each other…”
They kissed. The others cheered. At last, they were married... and for several hours, everybody celebrated this fact.
Simmons was still internally spinning long after all the dancing and laughter was over… he just couldn’t lose that bright and bubbly feeling in his head; he was married now. Grif was his husband. This was going to be their first night together as newly-weds. Tomorrow, they would leave for their honeymoon. He knew all of this was going to happen, he had planned most of it step-by-step, and he’d been very aware of everything all through the evening… but it was still sort of overwhelming. Not surreal, no, everything was incredibly clear and detailed. It was just so MUCH, and he was so HAPPY.
They hadn’t said a word since finally escaping all their friends and family, stumbling away from the party (though at this point, it was winding down), and blushing at all the celebratory calls when people realized the married couple was going up to their room together. They had both practically fallen down in the elevator several times due to extreme giggle-fits, and then tripped as they walked down the hall, because they couldn’t stop trying to kiss each other. Neither man had a single alcoholic drink all day, but they certainly looked and acted drunk, and they knew it, which made it even funnier.
Once inside their room, they fell down on the bed, laughter turning into softer chuckles and hums of joy, and they finally had a chance to just… take a deep breath. Sigh. Look at each other.
The bed wasn’t quite gigantic, but still more than big enough for them both. It had an extra-fluffy comforter, which Grif and Simmons were currently nestled into… they both smiled at each other, their faces soft yet clear in the dimly lit room (Grif had flipped on one light near the door as they came in, but that was it. More than enough to see by, and besides; there was a skylight above them, and although it wasn’t directly over-head, a full moon was up there somewhere).
The room itself was very nice, but not too extravagant, and still small enough to feel cozy. Grif had specifically chosen this hotel for the ceremony and this room for their wedding night because it was big enough to have space for everybody, but not nonsensically expansive (the idea of getting lost trying to find their room was horrible, but knowing their luck, that was exactly the kind of thing that would happen… and then they’d fall into a hell-dimension or something, whatever, weird crap ALWAYS went down when they wandered off, but not this time DAMMIT, it was gonna be a perfect day!). Also, this place wasn’t decorated with a bunch of fake-tourist-beach-themed junk, thank you very much. Grif was Hawaiian, he was getting married in Hawaii, he knew what was up.
Grif had slowly shed some of the outer layers of his suit after the ceremony, the jacket left behind on a chair down stairs, his tie long gone, and shirt un-tucked. Simmons was still all together, but that wasn’t going to last. Grif gently loosened Simmons’ tie for him, and Simmons began undoing his own buttons. They continued like this, switching between doing something for themselves, or helping the other remove a bit of clothing. Simmons sat up, placing his glasses on a table beside their large bed. Grif rolled onto his back, kicked off his shoes, and started wiggling out of his pants. Simmons giggled at the sight, then helped Grif get the job done. Once Grif was finally free of the fancy clothes and able to relax, Simmons took his own pants off (folding them absentmindedly out of habit), and gathered up everything to put out of the way.
Grif re-positioned himself, scooting to the middle of the bed, and held an arm out to Simmons. Smiling, Simmons came back to the bed, sitting with Grif and melting into his arms. They were only in their boxers at this point, able to feel each other’s skin and warmth… familiar and well-known at this point, but they would never get tired of it. They would never not love it.
As the cuddling continued, they realized they hadn’t spoken at ALL since they came in here… and that was kinda funny.
Grif and Simmons ALWAYS talked. Constantly. It was their whole thing. They bickered and bothered each other, they joked and laughed, they had deep and meaningful discussions or stupid and irrelevant conversations. The fact that they could always talk, about ANYTHING, was perhaps the first indication that they were meant to be (but they had unfortunately been too oblivious to see that right away). They never got tired of that, either. It was sort of ironic right now, though… what was there to say? “I love you”? Well, that was very true, but also very obvious. They had said it several times through the day, dozens perhaps. In their vows, Grif and Simmons had gone into more detail about their love, getting all sappy and honest in front of EVERYBODY (but hey- it was a wedding, that’s what you do). They also didn’t need to say what they wanted to do together right now. In fact, they had gotten each other undressed without a word.
Silently, they seemed to agree that they didn’t need to talk right now. They were both full of food and feelings, tired from walking around and dancing, but much to excited to even consider trying to sleep. They just wanted to keep looking at each other, and keep touching each other. They were in no rush, no rush at all…
Simmons pressed his forehead to Grif’s, and began to hold his husband’s hands, stroking them with his own fingers, running his thumb over the knuckles, turning them over to see the palm’s… as if he was looking at them for the first time. Grif was content to let it happen, enjoying the devoted attention. After a moment, Grif made a move of his own, bringing Simmons’ hands up, first kissing the back of the cybernetic one, and then the organic one. Such a silly, old-fashioned romantic gesture would have felt awkward in a different situation with a different person… but this was Simmons.
The man who has listened to Grif ramble on about how he thought Salad Fingers took place in the same world as the movie 9, who has held Grif’s hair back when he threw-up on several occasions, who has seen Grif get repeatedly kicked in the crotch and sent flying clear across a room... and also the same man who has given Grif his own heart to keep Grif alive, who has comforted Grif after dozens of nightmares, who has shared nearly every part of his life with Grif. The man who was now Grif’s HUSBAND. It was just a given that they would be silly together, and by nature, they made each other act stupid. It was impossible to imagine anything that was “too romantic” when it came to Simmons, because they deserved all the romance that existed; they loved each other, in just about all the ways you could love a person. Romance was more than welcome in moments like this. Romance was MADE for moments like this.
Simmons now moved his hands up Grif’s arm’s, traveling over the shoulders, finally going up into Grif’s hair. Simmons’ fingers, both flesh and metal, were so intuitive as they ran across Grif’s scalp, gentle but firm in a way Grif simply adored. Grif leaned forward, tilting his head down and kissed Simmons on the chest, right in the little dip of the collar bone. Simmons let out a long and sweet exhale, and it was music to Grif’s ears. Grif’s hands found their way to Simmons’ back, running up and down, feeling the shoulder-blades, the curve of the spine… and Simmons could feel the warmth of Grif’s touch, how soft his hands were with just barely a little rough edge of callous in certain spots.
They pulled each other closer together, Grif’s face finding his favorite spot in the crook of Simmons’ neck, their chests now pressed close. Grif felt like he was completely wrapped up in Simmons, wanted and loved. Judging from the way Simmons kept pressing multiple little kisses into Grif’s shoulder, Simmons felt the same. They finally leaned away to look at each other again, and Grif felt a sensation building in his chest; it made him shudder… such a white-hot feeling, it burned but didn’t exactly “hurt”, it was pure joy, so bright and strong… as Simmons moved his hands to hold Grif’s face, Grif actually let out a sound (that was thankfully quiet) like a gasp and a whine happening at once.
Simmons seemed to know what was happening and what to do, so he kissed Grif on the mouth, and it was… it was like all their other kisses, somehow, even though those had each been different, like the kiss when Simmons first told Grif how he felt, like all the casual kisses shared while watching TV, but it was also new, and familiar in a way it never had been before… it was everything. The feeling inside Grif’s chest finally had somewhere to go, as Grif did everything he could to somehow kiss his gratitude into Simmons… who, at last, was no longer spinning inside.
He suddenly felt focused and concentrated, everything he wanted was right HERE, nothing else mattered; he was where he belonged. Had he ever thought it was possible to feel this way? To even hope for it? The fact that he would find himself utterly comfortable, knowing without doubt that he was surrounded by affection, able to give it as well as have it returned? Grif could still surprise him at times, doing things that thrilled and excited him, but what really charmed Simmons about their relationship; he could actually relax into it. He didn’t have to worry about being good enough or “earning” the right to be this happy. They loved each other, and now they were married, it was so easy and wonderful to be together. As the kiss continued, Simmons felt warm tears of joy roll down one side of his face (only one eye still watered-up, but he still had that tingling sensation in his cybernetic one).
They both sighed once more, Simmons moving to lay back on the bed, and Grif easily following him. Their legs linked together as their heads sunk into the pillows. They still hadn’t spoken… but Grif was tracing the edge of Simmons’ jaw with his thumb, while Simmons rested his hand on Grif’s chest. Almost like they were playing a game, they could both guess what the other was thinking, all sorts of compliments and endearments shared through expressions and body language. They even knew the sound of their voices so well, they could practically hear each other. It made them giggle again, and they snuggled closer, hugging until it passed.
“Hey Grif…” Simmons finally said, looking him in the eyes.
“Hmm?” Grif made a little curious noise.
“You know what?”
“What?”
“You’re my HUSBAND~” Simmons grinned at him.
Grif choked on his own laughter, burying his face into Simmons’ shoulder.
They would never stop making each other stupid, they would never stop being silly and sappy, they could talk forever or say nothing at all, they would always feel safe and comfortable with each other, they would always find ways to make it feel new and exciting, they would never get tired of how it was when they were together… because they were in love. They were husbands. They were married.

Top New Horror Books in November 2020
Thirteen Storeys by Jonathan Sims
Type: Novel Publisher: Gollancz Release Date: 11/26/2020
Den of Geek says: This debut from Jonathan Sims is an excellent portmanteau novel – a selection of very creepy horror stories told by the residents of a property development that houses both the very richest and some of the poorest of London. It’s an ultra modern take on the haunted house story while each tale mixes in different subgenre flavours from techno-fear and shifting architecture to creepy kids and beyond, all building to a joined up climax that’s pleasingly violent and gross.
Publisher’s Summary: A dinner party is held in the penthouse of a multimillion-pound development. All the guests are strangers – even to their host, the billionaire owner of the building
None of them know why they were selected to receive his invitation. Whether privileged or deprived, they share only one thing in common – they’ve all experienced a shocking disturbance within the building’s walls.
By the end of the night, their host is dead, and none of the guests will say what happened. His death has remained one of the biggest unsolved mysteries – until now.
But are you ready for their stories?
Jonathan Sims’ debut is a darkly twisted, genre-bending journey through one of the most innovative haunted houses you’ll ever dare to enter.
Bone Harvest by James Brodgen
Type: Novel Publisher: Titan Books Release Date: 11/17/2020
Den of Geek says: A folk horror spanning a century, Brogden’s tale of a strange community who worship an ancient god takes us right up to the present day and to the parochial backdrop of a small set of allotments where residents bicker and secrets are kept, not realising that the new tenants are hiding something much bigger than any of them could imagine. A sprawling and evocative novel with plenty of ikky bits.
Publisher’s Summary: From the critically acclaimed author of Hekla’s Children comes a dark and haunting tale of an ancient cult wreaking bloody havoc on the modern world.
YOU SHALL REAP WHAT YOU SOW
Struggling with the effects of early-onset Alzheimer’s, Dennie Keeling leads a quiet life. Her husband is dead, her children are grown, and her best friend, Sarah, was convicted of murdering her abusive husband. All Dennie wants now is to be left to work her allotment in peace.
But when three strangers take the allotment next to hers, Dennie starts to notice strange things. Plants are flowering well before their time, shadowy figures prowl at night, and she hears strange noises coming from the newcomers’ shed. Dennie soon realises that she is face to face with an ancient evil – but with her Alzheimer’s steadily getting worse, who is going to believe her?
Secret Santa by Andrew Shaffer
Type: Novel Publisher: Quirk Books Release Date: 11/10/2020
Den of Geek says: A short snappy read which would no doubt make an excellent Secret Santa gift for the festive season, Secret Santa is a horror comedy set in the 80s in the book publishing heyday, where a new editor is tormented by her co-workers and accidentally gets her revenge via a freaky gnome doll. Shaffer is a comedy writer, critic and satirist so expect shivery fun.
Publisher’s summary: After half a decade editing some of the biggest names in horror, Lussi Meyer joins prestigious Blackwood-Patterson to kickstart their new horror imprint. Her new co-workers seem less than thrilled. Ever since the illustrious Xavier Blackwood died and his party-boy son took over, things have been changing around the office. When Lussi receives a creepy gnome doll as part of the company’s annual holiday gift exchange, it verifies what she’s long suspected: her co-workers think she’s a joke. No one there takes her seriously, even if she’s the one whose books are keeping the company afloat. What happens after the doll s arrival is no joke. With no explanation, Lussi s co-workers begin to drop like flies. A heart attack here; a food poisoning there. One of her authors and closest friends, the fabulous but underrated Fabien Nightingale, sees the tell-tale signs of supernatural forces at play, stemming from the gnome sitting quietly on Lussi s shelf. The only question is does Lussi want to stop it from working its magic?

Kingfisher The Hollow Places, which follows a recent divorcée who, penniless and depressed, moves in with her uncle only to find a portal to countless, often nightmare-inducing realities in his wall. Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark
Type: Novella Publisher: Tor.com Release date: 10/13/2020
Den of Geek says: What if, in addition to your garden-variety human racists (known as “Klans”), the Ku Klux Klan also included literal monsters, demonic carnivores (known as “Ku Kluxes”). This is the premise for Ring Shout, a supernatural horror that follows three Black women—a sharpshooter, a soldier, and a master swordswoman with the ability to talk to spirits—as they hunt down Ku Kluxes. Their job turns even higher-stake when they discover that the Klans and Ku Kluxes are gathering for a large-scale attack. If you’re bemoaning the end of Lovecraft Country season one, this is the story for you.

Publisher’s summary: The award-winning author of The Miseducation of Cameron Post makes her adult debut with this highly imaginative and original horror-comedy centered around a cursed New England boarding school for girls—a wickedly whimsical celebration of the art of storytelling, sapphic love, and the rebellious female spirit.
Top New Horror Books in September 2020
Night Of The Mannequins by Stephen Graham Jones
Type: Novella Publisher: Tor.com Release date: 09/01/2020
Den of Geek says: The second book by Stephen Graham Jones this year after The Only Good Indians, this zippy horror sees a bunch of teens pull a prank in a movie theater involving a dressed up mannequin which turns tragic. Now our protagonist Sawyer needs to put things right. Funny, camp and gory, this is a quick read, a coming of age story with a b-movie feel that’s full of surprises.
Publisher’s summary: Award-winning author Stephen Graham Jones returns with Night of the Mannequins, a contemporary horror story where a teen prank goes very wrong and all hell breaks loose: is there a supernatural cause, a psychopath on the loose, or both?
Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare
Type: Novel Publisher: HarperCollins Release date: 09/17/2020
Den of Geek says: You might be tempted in by the title alone (or indeed the cover art which is pleasingly cheeky) but this YA novel from author and horror nut Adam Cesare sounds like it should be also be a fun romp as a clown mascot goes nuts and starts offing the kids of a run down town. This is Cesare’s first foray into YA, though he has a rich background in genre.
Publisher’s summary: In Adam Cesare’s terrifying young adult debut, Quinn Maybrook finds herself caught in a battle between old and new, tradition and progress—that just may cost her life.
Quinn Maybrook and her father have moved to tiny, boring Kettle Springs, to find a fresh start. But what they don’t know is that ever since the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory shut down, Kettle Springs has cracked in half.
On one side are the adults, who are desperate to make Kettle Springs great again, and on the other are the kids, who want to have fun, make prank videos, and get out of Kettle Springs as quick as they can.
Kettle Springs is caught in a battle between old and new, tradition and progress. It’s a fight that looks like it will destroy the town. Until Frendo, the Baypen mascot, a creepy clown in a pork-pie hat, goes homicidal and decides that the only way for Kettle Springs to grow back is to cull the rotten crop of kids who live there now.
The Loop by Jeremy Robert Johnson
Type: Novel Publisher: Gallery / Saga Press Release date: 09/29/2020
Den of Geek says: An evil corporation conducting nefarious experiments on unsuspecting teenagers in a small town, a violent outbreak which sounds zombie-adjacent and a group of plucky outsiders trying to survive and even save the day, this should be a sci-fi horror page turner for lovers of this particular sub-genre. Despite the slightly generic sounding plot, Johnson is known for his ‘bizarro’ work so we’d expect this to have hidden flair.
Publisher’s summary: Stranger Things meets World War Z in this heart-racing conspiracy thriller as a lonely young woman teams up with a group of fellow outcasts to survive the night in a town overcome by a science experiment gone wrong.
Turner Falls is a small tourist town nestled in the hills of western Oregon, the kind of town you escape to for a vacation. When an inexplicable outbreak rapidly develops, this idyllic town becomes the epicenter of an epidemic of violence as the teenaged children of several executives from the local biotech firm become ill and aggressively murderous. Suddenly the town is on edge, and Lucy and her friends must do everything it takes just to fight through the night.
The Ghost Tree by Christina Henry
Type: Novel Publisher: Titan Books/Ace Berkeley Release date: 09/08/2020
Den of Geek says: A very dark coming of age tale from Christina Henry whose novels Alice and Lost Boys were reimagining of classic tales. The Ghost Tree is a standalone story which sees a teenage girl become her own hero in the face of terrible circumstances. Though it’s about young adults, this isn’t a YA novel, more, says Henry, it’s “an homage to all the coming-of-age horror novels I read when I was younger – except all those books featured boys as the protagonists when I longed for more stories about girls.”
Publisher’s summary: A brand-new chilling horror novel from the bestselling author of Alice and Lost Boy
When the bodies of two girls are found torn apart in her hometown, Lauren is surprised, but she also expects that the police won’t find the killer. After all, the year before her father’s body was found with his heart missing, and since then everyone has moved on. Even her best friend, Miranda, has become more interested in boys than in spending time at the old ghost tree, the way they used to when they were kids. So when Lauren has a vision of a monster dragging the remains of the girls through the woods, she knows she can’t just do nothing. Not like the rest of her town.
But as she draws closer to answers, she realizes that the foundation of her seemingly normal town might be rotten at the centre. And that if nobody else stands for the missing, she will.
Dracula’s Child by J. S. Barnes
Type: Novel Publisher: Titan Books Release Date: 09/22/2020
Den of Geek says: A long and thorough tribute to Bram Stoker’s original, written in the style of Stoker’s prose and imagining a continuation of the story this is a must-read for Dracula fans. It follows on directly from the original novel and imagines the Harkers’ lives some years after their ordeal at the hands of the Count.
Publisher’s summary: Evil never truly dies… and some legends live forever. In Dracula’s Child, the dark heart of Bram Stoker’s classic is reborn. Capturing the voice, tone, style and characters of the original yet with a modern sensibility this novel is perfect for fans of Dracula and contemporary horror.
It has been some years since Jonathan and Mina Harker survived their ordeal in Transylvania and, vanquishing Count Dracula, returned to England to try and live ordinary lives.
But shadows linger long in this world of blood feud and superstition – and, the older their son Quincey gets, the deeper the shadows that lengthen at the heart of the Harkers’ marriage. Jonathan has turned back to drink; Mina finds herself isolated inside the confines of her own family; Quincey himself struggles to live up to a family of such high renown.
And when a gathering of old friends leads to unexpected tragedy, the very particular wounds in the heart of the Harkers’ marriage are about to be exposed…
There is darkness both within the marriage and without – for new evil is arising on the Continent. A naturalist is bringing a new species of bat back to London; two English gentlemen, on their separate tours of the continent, find a strange quixotic love for each other, and stumble into a calamity far worse than either has imagined; and the vestiges of something forgotten long ago is finally beginning to stir…
Top New Horror Books in August 2020
The Hollow Ones by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro
Type: Novel Publisher: Del Rey Release Date: 08/04/2020
Den Of Geek says: Master of horror Guillermo del Toro reunites with Chuck Hogan, who collaborated with del Toro on The Strain for the start of a new horror series. It’s a paranormal tale that begins in the world of crime as a young FBI agent experiences an otherworld evil on the job. Del Toro is a master of world building and Hogan is a well respected literary voice so this should be a corker.
Publisher summary: A horrific crime that defies explanation, a rookie FBI agent in uncharted, otherworldly territory, and an extraordinary hero for the ages.
Rookie FBI agent Odessa Hardwicke’s life is derailed when she’s forced to turn her gun on her partner, who turns suddenly, inexplicably violent while apprehending a rampaging murderer.
The shooting, justified by self-defence, shakes Odessa to her core and she is placed on desk leave pending a full investigation. But what haunts Odessa is the shadowy presence she saw fleeing her partner’s body after his death.
Determined to uncover the secrets of her partner’s death, Hardwicke finds herself on the trail of a mysterious figure named John Silence: a man of enormous means who claims to have been alive for centuries, and who is either an unhinged lunatic, or humanity’s best and only defence against an unspeakable evil.
Night Train by David Quantick
Type: Novel Publisher: Titan Books Release date: 08/25/2020
Den of Geek says: Quantick is a former journalist and screenwriter for shows including Veep, The Thick of It and The Day Today. His latest novel is a high concept horror with an intriguing premise – a woman wakes up on a mysterious train full of the dead with no idea of where she is or how she got there. His books have been likened to David Wong and M.R. Carey which is incentive enough for us to pick this up.
Publisher’s summary: A woman wakes up, frightened and alone – with no idea where she is. She’s in a room but it’s shaking and jumping like it’s alive. Stumbling through a door, she realizes she is in a train carriage. A carriage full of the dead. This is the Night Train. A bizarre ride on a terrifying locomotive, heading somewhere into the endless night. How did the woman get here? Who is she? And who are the dead? As she struggles to reach the front of the train, through strange and horrifying creatures with stranger stories, each step takes her closer to finding out the train’s hideous secret. Next stop: unknown.
In Night Train David Quantick takes his readers on a twisting, turning ride through his own brand of horror, both terrifying and darkly funny. With echoes of Chuck Palahniuk, David Wong and M.R. Carey, Quantick’s unique and highly entertaining voice sings out in a page-turning adventure through a hellscape only he could imagine. If you haven’t discovered this rising star of the genre it’s time to step on board and have your mind melted.
Nicnevin and the Bloody Queen by Helen Mullane, Dom Reardon, Matthew Dow Smith and Jock
Type: Graphic Novel Publisher: Humanoids Inc. Release date: 08/20/2020
Den of Geek says: This is a great looking new graphic novel written by film distributor and documentarian turned sled dog racer Helen Mullane. It’s a British folk horror in the classic tradition with a modern twist, featuring a young female protagonist and gorgeous art. A proper page turner from an exciting new voice, illustrated by industry heavyweights.
Publisher’s summary: Something strange has been unleashed in the north of England. A modern-day druid commits a series of ghastly murders in an attempt to unleash the awesome power of the ancient gods of Great Britain. But all hell really breaks loose when his latest would-be victim, Nicnevin ‘Nissy’ Oswald, turns out to be more than she seems. A British tale mixing black magic and horror, godfathered by Jock, one of the new masters of comic book suspense.
The Living Dead by George A Romero and Daniel Kraus
Type: Novel Publisher: Tor Books Release date: 08/04/2020
Den of Geek says: This is the book that zombie king George A Romero left unfinished when he passed away in 2017. It’s now been finished by Kraus who collaborated on the books of The Shape Of Water with Guillermo del Toro – this an multi-threaded origin story charting the start of the dead walking the Earth from the man who created the modern zombie genre this is pretty essential reading.
Publisher’s summary: It begins with one body. A pair of medical examiners find themselves facing a dead man who won’t stay dead.
It spreads quickly. In a Midwestern trailer park, an African American teenage girl and a Muslim immigrant battle newly-risen friends and family.
On a US aircraft carrier, living sailors hide from dead ones while a fanatic preaches the gospel of a new religion of death.
At a cable news station, a surviving anchor keeps broadcasting, not knowing if anyone is watching, while his undead colleagues try to devour him.
In DC, an autistic federal employee charts the outbreak, preserving data for a future that may never come.
Everywhere, people are targeted by both the living and the dead.
We think we know how this story ends. We. Are. Wrong.
Top New Horror Books In July 2020
Survivor Song by Paul Tremblay
Type: Novel Publisher: William Morrow/Titan Books Release Date: July 7
Den of Geek says: The latest from the master of sad horror Paul Tremblay is one of his best yet. It is however, disturbingly prescient. Following an outbreak of fast acting rabies, hospitals are short of PPE and citizens are on lockdown. But when Doctor Ramola’s heavily pregnant best friend Natalie is bitten, the two must go on a perilous journey to save her unborn child. It’s gorgeously written, very moving and a little bit disturbing during a pandemic.
Publisher’s summary: A riveting novel of suspense and terror from the Bram Stoker award-winning author of The Cabin at the End of the World and A Head Full of Ghosts.
When it happens, it happens quickly.
New England is locked down, a strict curfew the only way to stem the wildfire spread of a rabies-like virus. The hospitals cannot cope with the infected, as the pathogen’s ferociously quick incubation period overwhelms the state. The veneer of civilization is breaking down as people live in fear of everyone around them. Staying inside is the only way to keep safe.
But paediatrician Ramola Sherman can’t stay safe, when her friend Natalie calls, her husband is dead, she’s eight months pregnant, and she’s been bitten. She is thrust into a desperate race to bring Natalie and her unborn child to a hospital, to try and save both their lives.
Their once familiar home has become a violent and strange place, twisted into a barely recognisable landscape. What should have been a simple, joyous journey becomes a brutal trial.
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
Type: Novel Publisher: Gallery/Titan Books Release date: July 21
Den of Geek says: Stephen Graham Jones is being touted as the next big thing in horror circles and while he’s had more than 20 books published it’s likely this will be his big breakout hit. The Only Good Indians follows a group of Blackfeet Native Americans who are paying the price for an incident during an Elk hunt a decade ago. Social commentary, a supernatural revenge plot and an intimate character study mix in this literary horror with something to say which brings genuine chills.
Publisher’s summary: Adam Nevill’s The Ritual meets Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies in this atmospheric gothic literary horror.
Ricky, Gabe, Lewis and Cassidy are men bound to their heritage, bound by society, and trapped in the endless expanses of the landscape. Now, ten years after a fateful elk hunt, which remains a closely guarded secret between them, these men and their children must face a ferocious spirit that is coming for them, one at a time. A spirit which wears the faces of the ones they love, tearing a path into their homes, their families and their most sacred moments of faith.
The Only Good Indians, charts Nature’s revenge on a lost generation that maybe never had a chance. Cleaved to their heritage, these parents, husbands, sons and Indians, these men must fight their demons on the fringes of a society that has no place for them.
Malorie by Josh Malerman
Type: Novel Publisher: Del Rey/Orion Release date: July 21
Den of Geek says: This is the sequel to Bird Box, the brilliant horror-thriller which spawned a not-that-great Netflix movie that was nonetheless extraordinarily successful. The original imagines a world populated by monsters – if you look at them you instantly lose your mind and harm yourself or others. The sequel finds Malorie and the two children years later – the kids are now teens who’ve never known a world other than the one behind the blindfold while Malorie still remembers the world before it went mad. A character study as well as a tense, paranoid horror story, this is one of the most anticipated horrors of the year.
Publisher’s summary: The much-anticipated Bird Box sequel
In the seventeen years since the ‘creatures’ appeared, many people have broken that rule. Many have looked. Many have lost their minds, their lives, their loved ones.
In that time, Malorie has raised her two children – Olympia and Tom – on the run or in hiding. Now nearly teenagers, survival is no longer enough. They want freedom.
When a census-taker stops by their refuge, he is not welcome. But he leaves a list of names – of survivors building a future beyond the darkness – and on that list are two names Malorie knows.
Two names for whom she’ll break every rule, and take her children across the wilderness, in the hope of becoming a family again.
Top New Horror Books In June 2020
Devolution by Max Brooks
Type: Novel Publisher: Century Release date: 06/16/2020
Den of Geek says: If anyone’s going to make a book about Bigfoots (Bigfeet?) not only genuinely very scary but also entirely believable it’s Max Brooks. The author of widely acclaimed World War Z weaves a found journal, snippets of interviews and the odd real life example together to tell the story of the remote eco-community of Greenloop who is isolated after a volcanic eruption and faces a deadly new threat brought on by changes in the ecosystem. It’s a cautionary tale, and a sometimes satirical fable of the dangers of underestimating nature.
Publisher’s summary: As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined . . . until now.
But the journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing – and too earth-shattering in its implications – to be forgotten.
In these pages, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the beasts behind it, once thought legendary but now known to be terrifyingly real.
Kate’s is a tale of unexpected strength and resilience, of humanity’s defiance in the face of a terrible predator’s gaze, and inevitably, of savagery and death.
Yet it is also far more than that.
Because if what Kate Holland saw in those days is real, then we must accept the impossible. We must accept that the creature known as Bigfoot walks among us – and that it is a beast of terrible strength and ferocity.
Part survival narrative, part bloody horror tale, part scientific journey into the boundaries between truth and fiction, this is a Bigfoot story as only Max Brooks could chronicle it – and like none you’ve ever read before.
The Secret of Cold Hill by Peter James
Type: Novel (paperback) Publisher: Pan; Main Market edition Release date: 06/25/2020
Den of Geek says: This is the follow up to 2015’s The House on Cold Hill, a supernatural thriller from multi-award winning British crime writer Peter James. It’s a modern take on a classic ghost story set in the Sussex countryside – the sequel sees the haunted Georgian mansion of the first book destroyed and new houses built in its place, where new families face malevolent forces from the past.
Publisher’s summary: From the number one bestselling author, Peter James, comes The Secret of Cold Hill. The spine-chilling follow-up to The House on Cold Hill. Now a smash-hit stage play.
Cold Hill House has been razed to the ground by fire, replaced with a development of ultra-modern homes. Gone with the flames are the violent memories of the house’s history, and a new era has begun.
Although much of Cold Hill Park is still a construction site, the first two families move into their new houses. For Jason and Emily Danes, this is their forever home, and for Maurice and Claudette Penze-Weedell, it’s the perfect place to live out retirement. Despite the ever present rumble of cement mixers and diggers, Cold Hill Park appears to be the ideal place to live. But looks are deceptive and it’s only a matter of days before both couples start to feel they are not alone in their new homes.
There is one thing that never appears in the estate agent brochures: nobody has ever survived beyond forty in Cold Hill House and no one has ever truly left…

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires
Type: Novel Publisher: Quirk Books Release Date: 04/07/2020
Den Of Geek says: The latest novel from Grady Hendrix is set in the same world as his masterful horror My Best Friend’s Exorcism, this time focusing on the wives and mothers of Charleston, South Carolina. Occupied with looking after their families and keeping up appearances, one group of women have to step up and fight when a charismatic stranger comes to town. A modern vampire novel packed with heart (and gore) this is another hit from one of the most exciting horror writers around.
Publisher’s summary: Steel Magnolias meets Dracula. A haunting, hair-raising, and ultimately heartwarming story set in the 1990s, the novel follows a women’s true-crime book club that takes it upon themselves to protect their community when they detect a monster in their midst. Deftly pitting Dracula against a seemingly prim and proper group of moms, Hendrix delivers his most complex, chilling, and exhilarating novel yet.
With Grady’s unique comedic timing and adoration of the horror genre, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires is a pure homage to his upbringing, the most famous horror book of all, and something we can all relate to – the joy of reading.
Eden By Tim Lebbon
Type: Novel Publisher: Titan Books Release Date: 04/07/2020
Den of Geek says: From the author of The Silence (which is basically A Quiet Place, published several years before A Quiet Place came out) comes another eco-horror which sees pollution and climate change force humanity to create locked off zones which are off-limits to people. Eden follows a group of adventurers who break the rules and enter one of the zones where nature has taken hold and begun to rebel. Should appeal to fans of Bird Box and Annihilation.
Publisher’s summary: In a time when Earth’s rising oceans contain enormous islands of refuse, the Amazon rainforest is all-but destroyed, and countless species edge towards extinction, the Virgin Zones were established in an attempt to combat the change. Off-limits to humanity and given back to nature, these thirteen vast areas of land were intended to become the lungs of the world.
Dylan leads a clandestine team of adventurers into Eden, the oldest of the Zones. Attracted by the challenges and dangers posed by the primal lands, extreme competitors seek to cross them with a minimum of equipment, depending only on their raw skills and courage. Not all survive.
Also in Dylan’s team is his daughter Jenn, and she carries a secret – Kat, his wife who abandoned them both years ago, has entered Eden ahead of them. Jenn is determined to find her mother, but neither she nor the rest of their tight-knit team are prepared for what confronts them. Nature has returned to Eden in an elemental, primeval way. And here, nature is no longer humanity’s friend.
Eden is a triumphant return to the genre by one of horror’s most exciting contemporary voices, as Tim Lebbon offers up a page-turning and adrenaline-fuelled race through the deadly world of Eden, poignantly balanced with observations on humanity’s relationship with nature, and each other. Timely and suspenseful, Eden will seed itself in the imagination of the reader and continue to bloom long after the last page.
The Wise Friend By Ramsey Campbell
Type: Novel Publisher: Flame Tree Press Release date: 04/23/2020
Den Of Geek says: The latest from British horror legend is a mystical tale of the occult which hints at the monstrous. Campbell is regarded by many as one of the most important horror writers of his generation. Influenced by H P Lovecraft and M R James, and influencing many horror writers who came after him, he’s published more than 30 novels. His latest sounds like a treat.
Publisher’s Summary: Patrick Torrington’s aunt Thelma was a successful artist whose late work turned to- wards the occult. While staying with her in his teens he found evidence that she used to visit magical sites. As an adult he discovers her journal of her explorations, and his teenage son Roy becomes fascinated too.
His experiences at the sites scare Patrick away from them, but Roy carries on the search, together with his new girlfriend. Can Patrick convince his son that his increasingly terrible suspicions are real, or will what they’ve helped to rouse take a new hold on the world?
The Book of Koli – The Rampart Trilogy, Book 1, By M.R. Carey
Type: Novel Publisher: Orbit Release date: 04/14/2020
Den of Geek says: This is the first book in a new trilogy by M.R. Carey who wrote excellent zombie novel The Girl With All The Gifts. This is an eco-horror/sci-fi which sounds like Tim Lebbon’s Eden in reverse – in Carey’s book it’s everything outside a small village that’s a threat – and both books are aimed at fans of Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach trilogy. Little surprise that horror writers are turning their attention to the environment in these frightening times and in Carey’s careful hands (there was an element of nature evolving in Girl With All The Gifts) this should be a new world worth visiting.
Publisher’s summary: EVERYTHING THAT LIVES HATES US . . . Beyond the walls of the small village of Mythen Rood lies an unrecognisable landscape. A place where overgrown forests are filled with choker trees and deadly seeds that will kill you where you stand. And if they don’t get you, the Shunned men will. Koli has lived in Mythen Rood his entire life. He believes the first rule of survival is that you don’t venture too far beyond the walls.
He’s wrong.
The Book of Koli begins a breathtakingly original new trilogy set in a strange and deadly world of our own making.

Den Of Geek says: A ghost story set against the backdrop of the sinking of the Titanic is a strong premise to set out with, from a writer who has good form with mixing horror with history after The Hunger which centres around The Donner Party, a group of pioneers in the middle of the 19th century, some of who resorted to cannibalism when their group got stranded. Alma Katsu is an author who “Makes the supernatural seem possible” according to Publishers Weekly, and the weaving in of real people with this creepy sounding tale of a nurse who survives the Titanic only to meet another passenger who couldn’t possibly have made it out is highly appealing.
Publisher’s summary: This is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the passengers of the ship from the moment they set sail: mysterious disappearances, sudden deaths. Now suspended in an eerie, unsettling twilight zone during the four days of the liner’s illustrious maiden voyage, a number of the passengers – including millionaires Madeleine Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim, the maid Annie Hebbley and Mark Fletcher – are convinced that something sinister is going on . . . And then, as the world knows, disaster strikes.
Years later and the world is at war. And a survivor of that fateful night, Annie, is working as a nurse on the sixth voyage of the Titanic’s sister ship, the Britannic, now refitted as a hospital ship. Plagued by the demons of her doomed first and near fatal journey across the Atlantic, Annie comes across an unconscious soldier she recognises while doing her rounds. It is the young man Mark. And she is convinced that he did not – could not – have survived the sinking of the Titanic…

It’s written by Fink and Cranor, the creators of the podcast, and has already garnered widespread acclaim. Fans of Twin Peaks should definitely check out Night Vale.

Deathless Divide by Justina Ireland
Type: Novel Publisher: Balzer + Bray Release date: 2/4/20
Den of Geek says: Justina Ireland’s Dread Nation was one of the most-talked-about YA debuts of 2018, and for good reason! The story of Black zombie hunters in an alternate Reconstruction-era America is already one of the best premises of all time, and Ireland more than follows through on the promise of kickass, sociopolitically cathartic potential—with Dread Nation, and now with Deathless Divide. (We love this one so much, it’s also on our Top New YA Books of February 2020 list.)
Publisher’s summary: The sequel to the New York Times bestselling epic Dread Nation is an unforgettable journey of revenge and salvation across a divided America.
After the fall of Summerland, Jane McKeene hoped her life would get simpler: Get out of town, stay alive, and head west to California to find her mother.
But nothing is easy when you’re a girl trained in putting down the restless dead, and a devastating loss on the road to a protected village called Nicodemus has Jane questioning everything she thought she knew about surviving in 1880s America.
What’s more, this safe haven is not what it appears—as Jane discovers when she sees familiar faces from Summerland amid this new society. Caught between mysteries and lies, the undead, and her own inner demons, Jane soon finds herself on a dark path of blood and violence that threatens to consume her.
But she won’t be in it alone.
Katherine Deveraux never expected to be allied with Jane McKeene. But after the hell she has endured, she knows friends are hard to come by—and that Jane needs her too, whether Jane wants to admit it or not.
Watching Jane’s back, however, is more than she bargained for, and when they both reach a breaking point, it’s up to Katherine to keep hope alive—even as she begins to fear that there is no happily-ever-after for girls like her.

The Boatman’s Daughter by Andy Davidson
Type: Novel Publisher: MCD x FSG Release date: 2/11/20
Den of Geek says: If it’s good enough for Paul Tremblay, it’s good enough for us! We love a good atmospheric horror read, and The Boatman’s Daughter sounds like it has more atmosphere in one page than most books do in their entirety.
Publisher’s summary: A “lush nightmare” (Paul Tremblay) of a supernatural thriller about a young woman facing down ancient forces in the depths of the bayou.
Ever since her father was killed when she was just a child, Miranda Crabtree has kept her head down and her eyes up, ferrying contraband for a mad preacher and his declining band of followers to make ends meet and to protect an old witch and a secret child from harm.
But dark forces are at work in the bayou, both human and supernatural, conspiring to disrupt the rhythms of Miranda’s peculiar and precarious life. And when the preacher makes an unthinkable demand, it sets Miranda on a desperate, dangerous path, forcing her to consider what she is willing to sacrifice to keep her loved ones safe.
With the heady mythmaking of Neil Gaiman and the heartrending pacing of Joe Hill, Andy Davidson spins a thrilling tale of love and duty, of loss and discovery. The Boatman’s Daughter is a gorgeous, horrifying novel, a journey into the dark corners of human nature, drawing our worst fears and temptations out into the light.

New/revised/whatever- List of stuff
Egos (Marks/Jacks) that I have written for or at least actually have thought about HCS/other universes for: (Just some brief rambles about them, please don't hesitate to ask about them :3)
-Anti, Two takes really, I like him soft, like him mean, hes just fun to write, plenty of different ways to spin why he acts out, what he is and all that. My current fav way to portray him is a missing piece of Seans soul, which means hes unstable as a ‘person’ (cough, not really a human but not, not human either.) And how he has static filled blue eyes but usually hides them with the scary emerald green...
-Jameson, I will always stand by this kinda universe i created with a friend aages ao that Shawn took away Jamesons voice when being puppeteered by an awful ink creature that shares his body. Giving Jameson a lovely fear of knives, some scars, and some very damaged vocals..
-Crank, Oh my fucking boi, a near dead human spliced with a bunch of robot parts..human skin tangled with wires and a heart incased in metal..hes a right mess, a voice in his head that makes him feel all sorts of bad.. He tries his best..he cries oil, I hardly get to write him but I love him.
-Blank, another big fav oi, black hollow eyes..a tendency to faint... My Hc involves him having been in an accident that almost killed him, leaving him with a very rare heart condition. He also has an aura which..kinda ties into him having a few abilities and stuff.
-Nes.. He started off as my own kinda Ethan ego, basically Ethan who was mistreated and really lost his marbles..hes great for the real twisted messed up kinda stuff, so dependant on others, a minor murderer, and has been eyed off by a certain ice cream driver for quite some time...
-Were eth, Okay granted this was literally just kinda an idea that..Eth became a were wolf boi, fangs, tail, ears. Hes just a fun lil pupper
-Eden. Succubus Ethan basically, but well, he again kinda turned into his own thing separate from Ethan. He's got a tail and wings, and hes a lovely lithe thing. He doesnt dare do things without consent, just gets a bit touchy-feely when hes gone without any energy for too long. Very wide stunning saphire eyes.
- Jackie Oh my lad..Buff, trans, adorable, sweet. I always love tinkering around with how/what powers he has tbh..and like- I’ve always had the hc that his eyes are lilac?? or gold. Depending on things.. and he works either at a comic book store, a gym, or at the counter of a gas station. Gives the best hugs. Also I love AUS where hes a phoniex because of uhm?? Big fucking red wings??? YES.
-Hen, Getting his accent right is tough but other than that I love writing about the tired doctor living off coffee and ignoring himself in favor of others.
-Chase The fucking best dad, sunshine lad. Running a vlogging channel and doing his best while combatting depression..I hc him to have chronic fatigue so he has to push himself extra hard. but He does well in trying to get better and look after himself and only slips up like any other helpless human. Very fun to write.
- Robbie. Sof.t zombie lad. Drown in a sweater. Stutters and is v quiet. Slow with speech. Struggles to see sometimes. Loves soft textures.Loves attention. Overall soft fucking lad.
-KOTS, To mean known as Simon. Actually v smart, big brain, very scattered n shy and nervous and squirrelish. Loves books n plants, loves nature. Red is his best colour. Warm sweaters and nuzzling and cuddling up. I always get torn between him being a hybrid of human/squirrel or just a lovely soft guy.
-Yan ! My fem nb/trans gal! They’ll kick ass with their katana, have the hots for Bim, and looove Japanese culture and stuff. Very adorable. Loves pink. 10/10 love to write.
-Technically I do have a muse for Mark, or..idea? I’m thinking about shoving it into my own oc/thing..but basically he got tortured n abused by Authy so hes not quite like the real life markimoo..just a nervous mess whose dealing with his traumas..
-Bing, Skater lad, yellow/orange eyes, sunflower vibes. Tries his best, clumsy as fuck, great for a laugh when hes not cowering under google.
-Edward iplier, Gah my doctor lad.. I have a hc that he Lost arm. In fire..or by dark n wilf. He has heterochromia too!! One cho ceye one blue one. He is a fucking nerd (Minor adhd lets be honest) He fucking loves space and science and space/science related lights. He has a bat plus with spacey wings. He likes reading, likes being clean and is quite a quiet indulger in food which has left him with a big of a softer figure. Super gentle nature..nothing like the arrogant portrayal we got in some videos.
-Angus I love this man!!! Part Aussie, part irish, a whole lot of gruff old dad with a soft spot for nice people and animals, has his own big place, next to a large ass forest. Loads of scars. Loves boots and cameo coloured clothing. A lovely guy when you get past the rough edges.
Aand onto all my ocs as of writing this (cause you name well know I be writing new ones like..all the time.)
--------------------
OC’S (My original characters!)
-Jessy, Cowboy- Choker with gold bell. Lil ears/horns. Spots. Shy but sweet. Hands and feet different colour to rest of skin. Kinda fur ish feeling rather then just straight-up skin. Pear shaped figure. Shy lad. Likes to take lots of naps, anxious easily but a big people pleaser too.
-Ailan and Keros. Moth n butterfly boi. (Literally just made up with a friend, just a random soft pair of lads tbh nothing too fleshed or spesh)
- Louie - Followed by a dark being/creature/spirit... Yet to determine what else about him, but hes got brown hair, pointed ears and looks lovely in green.
-Quinton A Hybrid of Demon and Angel otherwise called a Guardian. Quirky, Pan as shit, great dress sense. Extremely calm. Can see auras. Lovely black feathered wings. Bright blue hair. Kind smile. Works at a little coffee shop in his spare time.
-Ori Very pure angel boy, previously owned and not very well treated by a god, came crashing down to earth with no memories but his wings intact. Some help him.
-Lumi Ghost boy! Died years ago under awful circumstances..now lingers around on earth, sometimes meeting humans who happen to be able to feel or see his presence, he has the ability to make himself solid for short periods of time.
- Lucio Witchy..dragon soul something or other- Deaf.Paralyzed? In the arms??They might use alot of energy trying to hover around instead of having to use a chair..(I mean how many witches do you see with chairs??).. Although they could not have use of their arms instead, like..paralyzed from the shoulder down- they still have them but theyre effectively useless and easily sore.. (which might make magic really hard, cause theyd have to master it again without their hand gestures.)
- Eztli, Bit of a prick. Basically got cursed to have really weird blood that replished and rejuvinated too fast/too much by a witch he angered. So he turned the curse into a good thing and basically goes out offering himself as a human blood bag for vamps willing to pay in info, items, cash or uh..other services..
- Gallio Photographer, has hypocalcemia. Haven't really done much else with him tbh.
-Aomi Warlock/witch in training. Downright awful at it. Young and lives in a nice lil cottage outside of the village he was abandoned in.
- Lucas A moonstone gem perma-fusion, he kinda has SPD/DID but he doesn't, cause..hes two gems that became one but not fully. Leaving him to be a bit of a mess and not as strong as other moonstones.
- Kiyan. A little assistant android!! Created to assist, he can make portals!, He works at a post office. Hes under surveillance by the company that made him and isnt yet aware of many human customs/emotions..
- Alex A very confused, overly optimist Alien who doesn’t know what they are. Come from the planet Eutychia, 4'3. They fucking glow. You know Kilowatt from space chimps? think that. But hair n freckles and more human and just as bubbly and energetic.

The expression of CO is controlled by the circadian click, with the peak of activity occurring 12 h after dawn (Figure 20.10A). Genetic and molecular studies have shown that in Arabidopsis CO protein accumulates in response to long days, and this accelerates flowering (Figure 20.10B). As indicated in Figure 20.10B, a critical feature of the coincidence mechanic in the LDP Arabidopsis is that flowering is promoted when the CO gene is expressed in the leaf (the site of perception of the photoperiodic stimulus) during the light period. (...) In contrast, during long days CO gene expression is accompanied by a sharp increase in CO protein level, because at least some of the expression overlaps with the light period (see Figure 20.10B). (...) In the morning, phyB signaling appears to enhance CO degradation, whereas in the evening (when CO protein accumulates in long days), cryptochromes and phyA antagonize this degradation and allow the CO protein to build up (see Figure 20.10). (...) Moreover, exclusive of both the native FT and Hd3a genes is substantially elevated during inductive photoperiods (long days in Arabidopsis and short days in rice) (Figure 20.10C). (...) That is, in rice the coincidence of Hd1 expression and light signaling through phytochrome suppresses flowering by inhibiting the expression of Hd3a (Figure 20.10D).

RvB16 Episode 2 Review: Incendiary Incidents
(Old Blog Repost)
Last time, not a lot happened other than going out for food, Donut unlocking his true potential as a contortionist, and alien Norse Gods are a thing that exist. Nothing that unusual for this show. We got the setup, so what’ll they do with it now as the pizza quest continues? Lets find out!
Overview
To the shock of no one, Grif crashed the ship. He rushes everyone through the insults and sidenote to Kai’s… so does she actually have regular contact with their mom? Makes me really wonder about where Grif stands with his family. Anyways, good news is the pizza place isn’t far off! They just have to go through some ominous woods! Grif however opts to go through the less than ominous woods which would take longer, but isn’t… well, ominous. This gets Simmons attention. Enough that, as they make their way through, he pulls Grif aside to find out what his deal is. My shipping heart is happy to see Simmons noticing that something’s not right with his not-boyfriend and getting to the bottom of it… please tell me I didn’t accidentally write an innuendo,
So you knwo that ‘new science’ Grif mentioned last episode? Well here’s that new science: laziness… sort of! So when stuck on the moon (I THINK he called it Iris? So… after Michael and Lindsay’s daughter/Geoff’s goddaughter? AWW!), Grif found a book that Jax left behind about story structure. He found out about ‘incendiary incidents’, which are incidents that jumpstart a plot essentially I tried to look it up to see if that’s an actual term… and all I got was a bunch of fire safety websites. But I’ll take Joe’s word for it and say it’s an actual term. So Grif cutting off Jensen before, crashing the ship deliberately as it turns out due to a message from Locus, and avoiding the ominous woods is to avoid getting into an incident that would jumpstart a plot, and therefore lead them into another adventure. IDK if this is clever fourth wall breaking but… wow. WOW. Even Simmons gets chocked up about how much effort Grif put into doing nothing. It’s counterproductive when you think about it, but still!
Unfortunately for Grif, he IS in a webshow with plot structure and the powers to be aren’t going to let them get out of it that easy. Caboose discovered a glowing lake. And a figure emerges form it. Now the episode summary describes a thought to be deceased team member returning. Oh my Gd, that… that’s crazy! It could anyone! But why?! Tex? Flowers? Shelia? Church? Alpha Church? Yellow Church?! The guy who got killed during one of those 360 videos?! The possibilities are endless! It could be anyone! Who knows what kind of shocking twist it cou.. it’s Donut. Who we all knew was alive. Yeah… well I’ll give them this, it had me hyped for the episode.
So Donut… Jesus Christ. No, seriously, Donut is now Jesus. He walked ont he water for crying out loud! Donut says that he had been taken through time and that they have to go into the past to stop a great danger… and absolutely no one buys it. Now to be fair, Simmons makes a good point later. They already went through a time travel story and it turns out it was just a simulation. So them being skeptical about this happening again, especially since only Caboose saw the body horror last episode and I imagine that he forgot by now, is pretty understandable. But yeah no one buys it and Grif feels relieved about avoiding the story bomb… until Simmons points out that refusing the call is an actual story trope. See Grif? There’s no escaping!
So the Reds and Blues make it to ton and… yeah, it’s been totaled. After talking to Jeremy Dooley… I-I mean a cop… no, I’m 90% sure that was Jeremy. Anyways! After that, Donut tries to convince them of time travel again, and this time has actual proof. He has this new gun which he uses to open a portal to a few days earlier. How did he get this? Well to put it simply, after he got hit by Loco’s machine he got sent back in time and his body got wrecked, but God found him and fixed him. IDK if he means the Christian God or one of these alien Gods, but they’ve picked the Reds and Blues to be his time traveling warriors and has sent back four more guns for them to use to go back in time with. The portals can also only fit two grown humans at once.
Unfortunately, things go downhill quickly. So you guys remember the four armed guy from the trailer? Well the sky goes dark and he appears… oh sorry, typed that wrong. I mean that SHE appears. Yes everyone, we have a legit female villain at last!! I couldn’t get her name, but part of it sounded like Callie… which is my name… UGH… anyways! Yeah, she starts causing chaos and destruction. Donut uses a bubble shield, telling the others to use the portal guns and get away. They comply with everyone pairing off: Cabbose and Lopez, Tucker and Sister, Grif and Doc, and Sarge and Simmons. Donut remains behind, though I assume that he’ll follow them later. Huggins, who has been following the group, chases after Grif and Doc by going through their portal. We follow Sarge and Simmons as they land in… what looks like ancient Egypt. Could be wrong, but we’ll have to wait and find out cause that’s the end of the episode!
Review
Well all of that escalated quickly!
So… gonna talk about Grif first! Cause yes, he’s getting a character arc! I mean I guess it could have ended here since his plan failed, but since Huggins went after him and Doc we could get something on that front. Anyways, so I was right and Grif is actively trying to keep them out of getting into adventures. To the point that he’s putting effort into maintaining laziness… that’s the kind of logic I expect form this show. It wasn’t how I expected it, but I expected it. It’s also good to see that he does still have some hangups from the moon. He seems a lot more… what’s the word? High-strung than normal? He’s also still talking in pretty large bursts compared to normal. I don’t know if that’s just me reading into it too much, but it seems like Joe is trying to show that Grif still has hangups from his self-exile. Which hey, if it means more Grif focus, I am not complaining!
The episode is more about plot than the last one. Last week was the setup, and now the payoff is here. So first, Donut. He was written SO WELL. One of the issues last season was that Donut was pretty much a background prop and they even forgot to put him in scenes. Joe must have realized that this was a problem cause he’s already fixing it BIG TIME. Donut’s had shit happen man! He comes off as slightly mroe serious and competent in a sense that he actually knows the gravity of the situation. But he still feels and acts like Donut, which is good! It shows that he CAN be useful and competent, but without sacrificing his personality. Heck he only spouted out one innuendo and it was just to prove that it was really him. I am digging this new direction!
So turns out that the four armed guy si a terrifying alien goddess of death… I dig it! So someone pointed out that this character is similar to Hela from Thor: Ragnarok. SO it REALLY seems like Joe is basing the villain off Norse mythology… or just the Marvel Cinematic Universe verisons of them. Either way is fine. So I’m not sure if… Kali-Ra I think is her name? Anyways it doesn’t seem like she’s with the same group as Huggins cause I imagine that she would have reacted. I also don’t think that this chick is the main villain since DOnut referred to a ‘devil man’, but still she is terrifying and badass and I LOVE it. We finally got a female main villain guys! Joe is the hero we’ve waited for! Yay! Also Sarge asking he rot marry him, Of course he’d want to marry a violent death goddess… I’ll totes ship this!
Alright, time travel! SO ever since Joe mentioned it in that post a while ago, I’ve… been skeptical. Time travel in pretty much every show tends to be confusing and create tons of plot holes. It even happened in RvB before with Season 3 before Burnie retconned it as a simulation. Didn’t save my head from imploding, but still that’s a fair excuse. Hopefully Joe has a VERY good idea on what he’s doing with this, but I’ve been warming up to the idea since then. It’ll be fun to see the guys in different time periods at least! Form how it looks, Sarge and Simmons may go tomb raiding it it really is Ancient Egypt. I mean Sarge vs mummies, there is no way that cannot be epic!
So the gang is being split up, and the pairs are interesting! Sarge and Simmons sin’t that much of a surprise and tbf it’s been a long time since they had some one-on-one time. Simmons has also grown out of being a kissass quite a bit, so it’ll be interesting to see how that goes. Caboose and Lopez are together… so I’ just going to assume that in every animated RT production, Burnie is just meant to be stuck with/get annoyed with Joel in one way or another. Cause that is the impression I’m getting. Tucker and Sister are together, so I imagine flirting… okay I’m good with that! Hopefully Sister gets some focus to herself that isn’t just Tucker trying to hit on her, but still I’m good with this!
And finally Grif and Doc… that one is gonna be interesting. Grif in particular seems very grudgey against Doc for the betrayal and we just saw Doc save Grif form getting crushed by tackling him into the portal. Which props to Doc for that BTW. Still with that and since they’re 100 on an adventure now, Grif’s not gonna be a happy camper. Also if O’Malley gets active and starts going into Grif’s past issues like in S13, I… imagine that’ll be rough for our favorite orange boy. Also Huggins chased after them, so I assume that they’ll be discovering her soon. Which if she pals up with them…t hat could be really cute tbh! I am all for Grif and Doc shenanigans with a a ball of light! But yeah, this could lead to a LOT of things and I’m very interested in seeing how this plays out.
Final Thoughts
It was great! Admittedly this is a lot mroe bizarre than RvB has been in a while but it’s also RvB where Grif still being alive after getting hit by a tank and having Simmons organs thrown into him improperly isn’t ever questioned. Alien Norse Gods? Ia m all for it! Donut being Jesus? Awesome! More setup for Grf having a character arc? HELL YEAH MAN. It was a well done episode, progressing the plot without wasting any time, gives us a glimpse at how dangerous our villains our, gives us a badass female villain, and sets up everything for the episodes ot come. There’s definitely a feeling of epicness compared to last time, so it looks lie Joe is taking the armature gloves off and giving us one Hell of a story. I am very excited to see where it leads!

From flowering-related genes to your plate: the science behind optimizing radish yield
From flowering-related genes to your plate: the science behind optimizing radish yield https://ift.tt/G13jyz8 You can listen to this page as an audio file. Radish, a member of the Brassicaceae family, has been a popular root vegetable grown for centuries. However, the timing of radish flowering is crucial for successful cultivation. Radish plants that flower too early may not produce a substantial yield of roots, while late-flowering plants can lead to overgrowth and lower-quality roots. Yuki Mitsui, from Tokyo University of Agriculture, and colleagues have recently found that complex interactions among replicated FLC genes determine the flowering time of radishes. Researchers used RNA sequencing analysis to examine the regulatory roles and interactions of radish FLOWERING LOCUS C (RsFLC) genes, the main flowering repressor candidates, and other flowering-related genes. They found that some genes related to flowering, cool temperature and day length sensing, and other flowering pathways were differentially expressed in early-bolting and late-bolting radish cultivars under different flowering-inducing cold conditions. Among the flowering integrator genes, the four RsSOC1 copies, which are flowering inducers, were downregulated. The three RsFLC copies, which are flowering repressors, were upregulated in the late bolting cultivar compared to the early bolting cultivar in flowering-inducing cold conditions. The scientists also looked at how some small pieces of DNA in two important genes (RsFLC1 and RsFLC2) could affect when radish plants flower. They found that adding these pieces of DNA to the genes can make the plants flower later than usual. They also found that one of these pieces of DNA in RsFLC2 affects not only that gene, but all three RsFLC genes, which means that controlling when radishes flower is complex and involves lots of different genes working together. Mitsui and colleagues write: Our results suggest that the flowering time of radish is determined by epistatic interactions among replicated FLC genes. This provides a unique system for investigating regulatory interactions among evolutionary divergent loci originating from orthologous genomes. As the same RsFLC1 and RsFLC2 insertion alleles are found in several radish cultivars, our results will be helpful for further breeding improvements. RvB16 Finale Speculations
We are nearly 24 hours away from the season finale and to say that Season 16 has been crazy would be putting it mildly. We’ve had time travel, movie sets, talking lens flares, heavy doses of feels, and the looming threat of a paradox caused by an evil ‘time God’. I have no idea how this is going to end honestly. Like... I am more uncertain than I was last season about it. But lets explore the possibilities.
Now where we left off the Reds and Blues are preparing to go back in time to when Wash got shot to save him from getting a brain injury to begin with. Now to fully understnd what could possibly happens, we need to go back over how the time guns function. I went back voer the first few episodes, and this is what we know:
There are five total guns, but they only have three in their obsession. Donut and O’Malley have the other two.
The guns can open a portal to anywhere in time, even at random.
Each portal can only handle two grown men at a time. If more than that go through one, it will launch you into the present.
The time guns can function as regular teleportation portals due to the above fact.
Episode 2 showed Donut taking everyone back a few days ago with only one gun. As such, unless Donut’s gun is different, the guns can create more than one time portal at once.
So here is what I think is going to happen based off where the last episode left off. The Reds and Blues, minus Wash, Donut, and Doc for obvious reasons, will go back to that moment. Since the Fates appeared before the Cosmic Powers and confirmed that the end is going to happen, there is a possible chance that they will try to interfere. Now Genkins role is unclear since it looks like he’s the traitor and there’s not enough info known for me to deem if he’ll interfere or let things play out. Also even if they do interfere, the firewall is still in place, so they’re going to fail to stop them regardless. I’m also not sure if they’d bring up that Huggins is ‘dead’ (still don’t buy it) but if they do,t hat could make Grif hesitate on the plan. But lets just say for now that they go back in time to Season 15, Episode 17.
This can go one of two ways as far as I see it. They either save Wash or don’t. If they do save him, there is a very good chance that this will cause a paradox. Why? Well int hat case Wash doesn't get shot, Locus doesn't have to leave, Caboose doesn't get angry enough to knock out all the Zealots, and essentially it creates a butterfly effect. It means that that one tiny change causes everything to change in major unforeseen ways. In other words, this could theoretically undo the events that got them time traveling to begin with. Which will cause a paradox. IDK what will result, if an alternate time line is created, if a buffer period exists to get them to fix it, it’s unclear but IDT that Joe would have explained how paradoxes work if one of them wasn’t going to happen, if not all of them.
The other possibility is that Wash still gets shot or worst, the Reds and Blues cause it as part of the Closed Loop (or in simple terms, they never had the choice to save Wash, they were always meant to cause the opposite). Whether they cause him to accidentally stumble into the crossfire or one of them shoots him without meaning to, it’s uncertain. Part of me wonders if Tucker shooting Flowers in Episode 4 is foreshadowing to him being the one to cause it on accident since remember, we never saw who shot Wash. I also had a theory that to prevent the paradox, Grif goes back to that moment and has to do it himself which needless to say will cause tension, but that’s a different thing. Either way, if they fail then it’ll be a HUGE hit on their morale. And since they time traveled again and can't reinforce Chrovos’ prison due to Donut stealing The Hammer, this final act unleashes Chrovos and time is screwed.
I think in either scenario, a paradox is going to happen and then the next season will deal with the guys, or even just one or a select few, having to fix it while dealing with not just Chrovos and Donut, but potentially some angry Cosmic Gods. Will this involve more time traveling? I’m not sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Chrovos took the guns back since the Reds and Blues purpose would have been fulfilled. There’s also the whole ‘corruption’ thing that’s still unclear and him being free could cause some of the guys to join him due to it, but again it’s not 100% clear about how that works. But it’s safe to say that this upcoming finale is going to cause something major to happen and that the result is going to be.. well, bad. Very bad. But we shall see. Either way, I am ready except not.

Fresh Muse List
In case you guys were curious about my characters I have a big old list:
Egos:
Anti (Usually the softer kind, has green emerald glowings eyes which turn staticy blue when hes vulnerable/being open/himself. He can be an asshole though and does in deed take out bad guys with his knife.)
Jameson Jackson (Mute but does actually still have a voice- his vocals are in ruins and he's kinda dealing with poor eating making him dangerously skinny. He works as a bartender and has silver tipped brown hair that's a little bit longer than the others.)
Crank (Robot Ethan ego. He’s an utter mess- eyes sometimes fizzle out, joints stiff, has emotional issues. He also has a corrupted voice in his head that is real nasty when he pops up and sometimes takes over their shared frame.)
Blank (Fricking soft boy, his aura is hard to control and sometimes controls him. He has a rare heart issues which makes him prone to fainting and collpasing without much warning. Still, he tries.)
Jackieboyman (Super hero boy! Super buff, caring, kind, and tol. Lilac/Gold eyes. Little odd strip of red in his brown hair. The best voice. Works as a gas station worker to hide his identity (he looks great in the blue button up and glasses.) He.’s ftm trans. Sometimes I HC him as a phionex other times he has pretty golden whips of light.)
King of the Squirrels (Otherwise known as Simon. He’s a hybrid, Tail, ears. Omega. Very sweet, little skittsh and frzzled. Wears glasses and cozy sweaters- likes making nests and being out in nature. Loves PB but is actually allergic..doesn’t keep him from eating it though.)
Henrick Von Schneeplestien (Grumpy german doctor who lives off of coffee. He is willing to assist those in need and really needs to sleep.)
Chase Brody (He’s got his youtube channel and a bunch of positive vibes! He’s strugglign sometimes with depression but its not always so bad. Sometimes he had real bad migrains though, and he also suffers from chornic fatigue making his days shorter or hard to get teverything done.)
Wilford Warfstache (We know him, lover of bubbles and pink. Talks funny, loves candy. Chubby man.)
Yandere (Nonbinary somewaht MTF. They’re a real cutie, will punch dickheads without a sweat and really just want someone to be their senpai and let them fall for them head over heels without running away..)
Were-Eth (Ethan got bit by a werewolf and now deals with that. Basically an Ethan muse with a small twist. He’s absoultely adorable with the tail and ears and sharp teef.)
Mark (Abused and kidnapped by Author My Mark is a little bit softer then the guy he’s based on. He’s a little bit shorter and alot more anxious and unsure of himself thanks to Author breaking him down. He’s vcovered in lots of scars spescfially his wrist’s and does not like water much. )
Bing. (Tries his hardest to be good, bit glitchy but he’s chill. He tries to skate, and jokes wen nervous. He’s pretty sweet though.)
Edward Iplier (Absoulte adorable dork, He tries to help everyone and anyone no matter what- I’ve kinda fallen in love with the idea of him only having one arm but that’s only one of many ideas. He loves space, he’s chubby and also loves food. He’s got a prety neat aura ablity too.)
Robbie. (Soft grape zombie boy. He’s sweet and innocent as ever. He’s easily th e shyest of the bunch and doesn’t always talk to much. He loves getting affection though and is always eager to please.)
