Modern Ikebana There is a new generation of radical artists who are reinventing what it means to arrange flowers - many of them inspired by the Japanese art of ikebana. Since its origins in the 6th century, ikebana has been as much a philosophy as an art, with its roots in Zen Buddism and a reverence for nature. Over hundreds of years ikebana has developed a complex set of unwritten rules that take a lifetime to master. But in recent years the distinctive look of ikebana - with its love of the asymmetric shapes (found in nature) and its willingness to embrace simple, natural materials - has found a new audience. Thus a new generation of artists have opened up to a new way of working with flowers. ‘Modern Ikebana' showcases a selection of these floral artists - from Tokyo to New York. The authors Victoria Gaiger and Tom Loxley - editors of the award-winning ‘rakesprogress’ - the UK’s leading independent magazine about the art of gardens, plants and flowers - talked to 25 of the most exciting young florists working today about their art and inspiration. It includes an introduction to the history and evolution of Japanese floral art and beautiful images of the artists’ studios and their floral creations. ‘Modern Ikebana: A New Wave in Floral Design’ by Victoria Gaiger and Tom Loxley, Published by ‘Ludion’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #modernmasters #floralcontemporary #punkebana #floralsculptors #zenbuddism #nature #flora #fauna #rakesprogress #victoriagaigerludion #modernikebana #tomloxley #modernikebanaanewwaveinfloraldesign https://www.instagram.com/p/CUW9rzCIboX/?utm_medium=tumblr

Modern Ikebana A new book from Victoria Gaiger and Tom Loxley explores the design evolution of Japanese flower arranging. ‘Ikebana’ - the Japanese art of flower arranging - is thought to have originated in the sixth century. With roots in Zen Buddhism and a reverence for nature, the tradition has become as much a philosophy as an art. The practice of ikebana has a number of rules, including the importance of visual minimalism, adherence to nature, a scalene triangular structure and an expression of emotion. As with most age-old forms of creativity, however, there are those bringing the practice into its contemporary context, experimenting and innovating with new forms and processes. 'Modern Ikebana' a new book from ‘rakesprogress’ editors Victoria Gaiger and Tom Loxley, profiles the designs and designers doing just this. The floral artists and designers featured are based around the globe; Manu Torres (Portland, US), Toru Watarai (Kamakura, Japan), Emma Weaver of ‘Palais' (London, UK), design studio ‘Poppykalas’ (Copenhagen, Denmark) and ‘Wife NYC’ (New York, US). In the book the authors talk to these practitioners about their work and inspiration and explore the history and evolution of Japanese floral art. ‘Modern Ikebana: A New Wave in Floral Design’ by Victoria Gaiger and Tom Loxley, Published by ‘Ludion’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #modernmasters #floralcontemporary #punkebana #floralsculptors #zenbuddism #nature #flora #fauna #rakesprogress #victoriagaigerludion #modernikebana #tomloxley #modernikebanaanewwaveinfloraldesign https://www.instagram.com/p/CUW9l8FIRsl/?utm_medium=tumblr
