DRIP DRIP by paru itagaki was good as fuck. obsessed with the way she uses sexuality and innocence and comedy to explore trauma and how naturally we get to cycle through the MCs life dealing with the same struggles. big huge recommend this is peak you guys go read it now
the delicacy with which romantic encounters and the idea of love, betrayal and the prejudices around sex and purity are handled is amazing, at times breathtaking and at times super funny, and the ending is particularly triumphant. it’s short but a masterpiece

i got distracted and ended up sprawled out on the couch to read BEAST COMPLEX, also by itagaki paru. i haven't read beastars' manga yet but i rly want to asap and seeing so many different detailed and fascinating one off beast stories from her was a delight. i hope we get more!
special shoutout to the story of the peacock and the taxidermist pig and the story about the struggling girlboss tiger and the dominant somewhat erotic masseuse alpaca, two dynamics that drove me absolutely fucking crazy oh my god
(note: I’ve watched beastars and liked it for a good while but never read it. that and the rest of itagaki’s offerings are definitely edging towards the top of my to-read list this woman has a gift )

DOUNIKA NARU HIBI is a quaint unassuming look into the sex lives of young people. The animation isn't much to write home about, but it's an interesting premise worth checking out…or so i thought. Then i kept watching. I'm so sorry to these cool lesbians for being in this OVA, cause what the fuck. welcome to the sliding scale of mess
the first act, about two lesbian exes of the same girl hooking up and commiserating after her wedding, was pretty good, it didn't linger on their awkward sexual chemistry enough to get super invested, but that was ok with me since i foolishly expected more of that vibe
things started downsliding in part 2, about a gay teacher with a high schooler fetish, but since it started with an ex student confessing and had several time skips i was expecting something that would focus on the two as adults: instead it meandered awkwardly and landed on uhh.
so this fucking guy, instead of reconnecting with the ex student years later or finding someone new or changing his job or something, begs his uninterested students to throw him a literal pity party then INVITES THEM TO HIS EX LOVE HOTEL HOME AND BLUSHES AND IT FADES TO BLACK.???
it was very 'never let them know your next move' type bad directing. the limited time was squandered on random shit, and the introspection didn't hit, and nothing hit really. most of it is just the guy thinking for ten minutes his sisters bf looks kinda like that one guy lol
if you like teacher student you won't like this. if you don't like teacher student you won't like this. noone will like this. however this was not the end of my horrors. it was all a trojan horse, a queer adult smokescreen for the true shit de resistance of this OVA, part 3+4.
gonna preface with a quick note: if people like taboo shit in general im cool with letting them mind their business. on a personal preference level sexual romance between high schoolers n stuff is p normal, and sexuality+puberty as a narrative for other reasons can be really interesting. regardless of this fact, what will come next will please nobody.
part 3 and 4 follow the world's blandest, lacking in personality next door neighbours couple at around the age of maybe ten, and probably 14 or 15 in the second part. this was clearly the OVA's primary focus, so it got to meander for TWO parts and not one! what joy! huzzah!
part 3, i shit you not, follows a very young elementary school boy who is constantly harassed and creeped on by his 20 something cousin, who spends half her time asking if he's had sex with his girlfriend, and the other half trying to touch him inappropriately as he screams "I'm being sexually harassed!"
…said cousin acts in AV, and the boy's mum shits on her for that, while his dad, her uncle, watches her videos and wants her sexually. neither of them take care of their son, who gains a sexual fixation on her. the little girl finds out and things get predictably weird. TMI but as someone who had dubiously nonconsensual sexual experiences (done to me with no ill intention, kids are weird and these things can happen randomly without proper education) with another kid very young I think there are ways to tackle this topic that can be interesting. this was not and i was so,show equal parts bred AND pissed off for the remaining duration, not helped by the website chugging every thirty seconds to really rub it in.
the kid says it's too early and things don't get particularly far, but its clear his weird sexual fixation on his cousin (+abuser, no matter how they laugh it off and don't take it seriously) is getting inbetween them. this meanders into their mid teens, where they're still tense.
they have a nothingburger conversation about this, and then the girl jacks off a bit, and then they have an extremely sterile and character dynamically uninteresting boob touching session, and the cousin gets married, and they get voted best couple for hanging out a lot, and it fades out on the girl implying they slept together after they receive a condom for being the best match. allegedly. zero chemistry and all…
you might be wondering why i'm describing this much, but it occured to me that they probably had the marriage element and the boob scene to loop back into some of the motifs of part one, which bothers me cause that was the only part of this OVA with any kind of enjoyment involved. it left me thinking: was the queer stuff thrown in last minute to frame 3+4? for something not marketed as particularly controversial yet also unable to commit to either quaint interesting human sexual dynamics OR particularly messy ones exclusively, where does that leave part 1?
I think these are probably silly questions to ask, since I realised it was a manga adaptation, and one that I couldn’t care less to look into at that, although I might out of morbid interest later, but it still left me questioning things: its not titillating, its not quaint, not nostalgic, not looking to explore much or to direct the stories to have much cohesion OR major differences. what was the point of it all? it leaves a weird taste in my mouth that the lesbians might have been seen as ‘equally controversial' or something just for being gay, or at least I felt like I was scrambling for some sort of connective tissue between all three sections that I couldn’t find a satisfying answer for.
its a case study for incompetence, which is wild as it started pretty strong and was looking to be an easy recommend solely for focusing on adult sexuality and queer themes and multiple little stories, but ultimately the meandering road lead nowhere. worse than nowhere, actually. down into the depths of boring, maddening mediocrity.

i decided to start my quest into reading umezu manga this afternoon and clicked the first result i could find: the short oneshot FASTING, about a girl who falls victim to an eating disorder after being called slurs by a guy in the street. very short but interesting for what it is
you can tell from the ending that she's so taken in by how badly she was treated she believes the guy who hurt her due to her own self hatred now, but even if she falls for it in the moment, in eating him to compensate for what she's lost her body remembers. since it’s such a short read, I definitely recommend it if you can stomach the portrayal of disordered eating in media, although it could have flourished slightly more thematically with a little more breathing room

UMIBE NO ETRANGER huh…it was really prettily animated. i like mio i think. i want to read the source material but somehow despite being easily pleased i felt so empty and kept getting distracted. it just wasn't hitting cause it didn't let us get to know the characters at all.
as a big fan of many short oneshot type romances and also a big dokyuusei enthusiast an OVA movie full of brief romantic set pieces is right up my alley but whether just in adaptation or in general the relationship doesn't get explored at all. it feels like stick figures kinda.
im easily pleased but I couldnt pull a masterpiece out of the stone and what was chosen to be adapted (if that's what happened here) was extremely piecemeal and very impersonal to the point the sex scene left me feeling barely anything about it. man. i wanna watch smth better. ill consider the source material but the movie sadly was just not it for me (and I ended up unsatisfied in my need to watch a movie so the next media was queued up immediately after)

MIRAI E NO STARWAY was a wonderful return to catch up with the aikatsu cast 😭 i can't give an unbiased rating but seeing everyone again was so beautiful, and they knew what they were doing with the yuri implications too. im just. so glad they're all still out there, shining.
special shout out to the ED, which still managed to stand out despite the crazy quality of classic aikatsu EDs and had a beautiful rosy moth fairy theme…ever since i laid eyes on the original endings ive wanted to create something as pretty myself. this stands among the best of all time

KIMI E MUSUBU HAPPY END, a short oneshot about a Cupid trying to hook up his client with a woman so he can be reborn but being chosen instead, was nothing insanely special but very cute and i liked Q as a character a lot from what we see of him and the cupid lore was nice. more importantly i just lost my shit at this no context quote, which has to be the line of all time

PERFECT BLUE was excellent, WAY more of a mind fuck than I was expecting, especially towards the ending where i needed to google a little to figure it out 100%. its really great if you want to be terrified, confused and feel visceral paranoia and spiralling dissociative terror
im not sure it's like a 'this is my FAVOURITE movie of all time' type of movie although it hit super super hard, but its insanely good and I think I'll recommend this to people whenever possible and be super annoying about it! its something i was meaning to watch for years heheh
I think itll probably improve on a rewatch knowing the broad strokes of what the ending implies about the events of the story, but we'll see when I get to it. For now im generally very pleased with the viewing experience and some scenes will stick with me forever. Another good idol anime ticked off my list ~

MAZU WA OISHII GOHAN WO TABEYOU was not the most mindblowing one volume yaoi ive ever read but was extremely cute!! my favourite meal is glasses boys who cook opening up to their boyfriends (i wonder why). when theyre paired up with warm friendly chill guys. it reminds me of mine
romance really hits different when you’re in one of your own. and fast food like a decently good oneshot can be filling in the best possible way when it hits right
