The first Torrid store -Ā Brea Mall - Brea, CA (Opened April 18, 2001)
Designed by JGA, Inc.Ā
From the book: ā€œThe retailer, Hot Topic, based in City of Industry, CA, started a short 12 years ago with a concept and a target market; cutting edge apparel, accessories and novelty items--all inspired by alternative music, oriented towards a hip and trendy, teenage market. Hot Topic changed the look of their retail settings, which are usually located in mainstream malls, and the company has recently taken aim at another special market. The new focus is on plus-size teens; an area that the fashion market seems to have neglected.Ā
Up until this time the 15-30 year old hip and trendy young women who wear sizes 14-26 had no other choice but to shop in the larger size women's shops where the fashions were tailored to the more matronly and conservative tastes. That is how Torrid was born!Ā
Torrid was introduced in a new, hot and fun retail setting designed by JGA, Inc. of Southfield, MI which has designed the various prototypes for the Hot Topic stores as well. To be sure of the need for such a niche to be filled, the company opened five Torrid shops almost simultaneously; the first in Brea, CA, followed by stores in malls in Mission Viejo, CA, Annapolis, MD, Omaha, NE, N. Attleboro, MA, and Littleton, CO. The merchandise offerings are clustered as "Streetwear," "Clubwear," Rockabilly Wear," and Renaissance Wear" and the stores average about 2,750 SF. Besides the "everyday" slacks and novelty T-shirts, these larger size young women can find black vinyl pants and mini-skirts, black corsets, dog-collar chokers and platform shoes as well as retro-inspired clothing and accessories. In addition to the gothic and prom dresses, Torrid also carries a full line of lingerie for this particular market. Listening to the target market, Hot Topic's Torrid offers teenagers and up the opportunity to look "girly yet fierce."Ā
The design objective for the prototype store that was designed by JGA, Inc. was to create "a celebration of abundance" and make the setting as unique, unconventional and spirited as the plus-size young women who will be shopping here. Inspired by a "mythological, after-hours club in New Orleans," the atmosphere is romantic, dark and filled with a sense of "unbridled passion." "From the signature flaming heart icon to the curving voluptuous lines throughout the store, excessive materials and scale mirror the zest of the Torrid woman." It starts out front with the shopper-stopping facade which serves as a dramatic gateway to the store.Ā
The curvaceous and sensuous "hourglass" figures of the Torrid customer is expressed in the hand-crafted metalwork and the backlit translucent glass glowing red. A "drippy" red chandelier and theĀ hand blown flaming heart torcheres add to the store's distinctive sense of place and being. The mosaic porcelain tile floor sets the color palette of jewel tones and metallics. "Visually complex, layers of finishes and architectural pieces evoke a one-of-a-kind artistic flavor." The eclectic mix of fixtures, furniture and furnishings-even the armoires--add to the New Orleans flavor. The hand painted, whimsical and overscaled armoires or cabinets are used to anchor the various zones within the store and at the center of the space a large bronze metallic drape further divides the departments.
The designers added special touches to each area to create that unique, one-of-a-kind feeling to the design. Specially designed, oversized red sculptured chairs with slatted backs are featured in the shoe area. Shoes and accessories are displayed on the slatted backs. The lingerie area takes on a more intimate and exotic--almost Moroccan--feeling with the hand blown glass chandeliers suspended down from large plaster domes. Seen behind this area--beyond a hand painted wall and arc--are the individual, oversized dressing roomsĀ which are equipped with flattering uplights and decorative chandeliers that are visible from other parts of the store. The cash wrap becomes a "focal fantasy" in the total design and it resembles a giant canopy bed topped with twisting shapes and forms.
The space is filled with a pulsating excitement that is so appropriate for the merchandise and the young clientele. In addition to the shimmering palette of rich, deep colors, the warm colored downlights not only enrich the ambient colors and textures but they enhance the merchandise display. The traditional long and narrow mall space is broken up into more personal and individual zones by the variations in ceiling heights, the tin ceilings, finials and the assorted wall coverings. The use of brocades, metallics, and jewel tones on the walls also help to differentiate areas in the store. The metal fixture system--tortoise shell like in appearance--was customized to accommodate the products unique size and length requirements.
If all goes as well as anticipated we can expect to see more and more Torrid shops opening up across the USA- maybe even as many as 700 outlets!ā€

The eastern reaches of Annapolis River don't carry much current. Though it's well and truly flowing west, the water is dark and holds few obstacles to raise a rapid. These dim autumn days are deceptive if you're locked inside away from nature. Get out in the forest, let your eyes adjust, and all that sleepy scenery will lighten up the gloom. The short hike in to this burial ground is a big part of what keeps me coming back. Finding a good place to leap Burbidge Brook is part of the fun, hurtling across in hopes of not walking home with wet feet. I was spared that today, but only just.
I may well be running away, filling my afternoon with gentle isolation, the quiet company that comes in having nothing between me and silence. The real appeal that drives me isn't history, not the non-existent desires of the dead or the ongoing expectations of the living. I come to feel the freedom of doing something insignificant. I want to work to exhaustion, tire my body and calm my mind, so sleep will settle a little heavier when night falls. The world has no demands on days like these, and no one will care about my efforts beyond a few descendants. It's one step up from busywork, only slightly more significant than digging a hole in any old ground.
It took me two straight years of searching to find the Charlton grave, mounted by a single shattered limestone marker in a bit of tangled brush. An elderly neighbour finally showed me here, and we dug it up together. Totally buried in a nondescript grove, I'm not even sure how he found it himself. One tree looks much the same as another to me, so they're not the best landmarks ā€“ and if not for his good memory, it might have been lost forever. So I took down the coordinates, and made certain that time would remember this place where the dead still make me feel alive.
Every time I've come back since that first visit, the long-broken gravestone has been buried in leaves. Lying flat on the earth, it doesn't take long to get lost. So I'm here today to build a small dirt ramp, just enough to let the rain and wind keep it clean from the forest floor. It's not much, but a more complete solution would probably prove worse in the long run. If I were to cement the pieces and remount the marker to its base, it wouldn't be long before a branch or even an entire tree came down to break it worse than before. The safest approach is to leave it lying at a slight angle. Somewhere in the limbo between perfection and "good enough" is a gentle place I've always been happy to inhabit.
This isn't the sort of pursuit you'd exactly call archaeology. It's not ancient enough to draw any academic interest, yet too old to hold the attention of living memory. I'm just here to fill that middle ground, because I've got the time, interest, and physical ability to make an effort. There's no historical or social significance, no famous names or great deeds ā€“ just a reflection of very ordinary lives, like most of us descend from.
It's well past two centuries since the burials. First was Mary Charlton in 1815, then her husband Henry the following year. From my understanding, this style of gravestone dates from somewhat later, at least the 1840s, so it was likely marked with a wooden cross until money was saved for something permanent. Far as I can figure, no one else ever joined them here. Their son, Aaron was buried in Wilmot, and their daughter Experience up the road in Mount Hanley. They were all from Massachusetts, likely Loyalists who came to Nova Scotia after the Revolutionary War. Neither of their children strayed far, but still out of sight from this humble stead. Just in earshot of the dark Annapolis River, running almost silent, speechless as the dead themselves.

Most Affordable Neighborhoods To Live In Baltimore, Maryland
Tumblr media
You may have heard that Baltimore is an expensive place to live ā€” and when you look around, it seems like it lives up to this reputation. But, lucky for you, there are still affordable neighborhoods that can be great places to live. You don't have to spend a fortune on rent to live in the city - take a look at some of these cost-friendly areas and pick one for yourself!
Woodsboro
Woodsboro is a very small community with less than 300 homes in total. The median home price is $165,000, making it one of the most affordable areas in Baltimore County. Homes here tend to be older and smaller but still comfortable and functional. The neighborhood has its own school district and close access to shopping centers off Carroll Avenue or Route 40.
Greencastle
Greencastle is a neighborhood in South Baltimore that offers a quiet community and access to amenities like shopping, dining and entertainment. The average home value in Greencastle is $275,000, which is significantly less than the citywide average of $390,000.
The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Greencastle is $1,250 per month, which is only slightly more expensive than the citywide average of $1,200 per month.
Glen Burnie
Glen Burnie is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in Baltimore. Located just north of Fort Meade in Anne Arundel County, this community is known for its shopping, dining, and entertainment options. With easy access to Interstate 97 and Maryland Route 295, Glen Burnie residents can enjoy quick commutes to Washington D.C., Annapolis, or Baltimore City.
Dundalk
Dundalk is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in Baltimore as well as other nearby cities. It is located about 11 miles from downtown Baltimore and has an average home price of $140,000. This neighborhood is great for families looking for an affordable place to live close to schools and shopping centers.
Essex
Essex is located in Baltimore County, Maryland, and has a population of 15,561. The median age of residents here is 39 years old and nearly 49% of the population are married with children. The average household income in this neighborhood is $71,891 per year which is much lower than the citywide average of $78,230.
Takeaway: Baltimore is a great city and one of my personal favorites. There's something for everyone here, with tons of opportunities to experience history, culture, and the outdoors. These affordable neighborhoods are some of the best places to experience these things, so if you're looking to move, hopefully, this ranking helps!

Seresin slamming the door on their nosey teammates should be satisfying. It isnā€™t. It feels too final, the air in the room stiff and stagnant as Seresin snarks out a response and claims the bed as his. Bob wants to argue, or at least discuss a practical arrangement that doesnā€™t leave either embarrassed (himself, really) or anyone curious as to why neither can stand the otherā€™s company at the moment, but his throat dries up. He swallows. Jakeā€™s stare is unnerving, several seconds too long. Bob feels assessed and found wanting. He feels small, and lacking, despite being the same height. Life long habit has him pushing his glasses only to brush against the bridge of his nose. He drops his hand uselessly by his side, fingers twitching. Glasses, pens, loose threads - all typical victims of his nervous fiddling. Thereā€™s nowhere for his nervousness, his confusion, or overthinking to go.Ā
ā€œI take care of myself.ā€ It doesnā€™t matter that itā€™s technically true, it sounds weak. His dadā€™s career in the Navy offers him no protection. No legacy. Long and respected as it might be, no one will look at the last name Floyd and draw conclusions, make comparisons - good or bad, wrong or right. No oneā€™s looking out for him at all. Not many, at least. Duck, now, and the rest of the Eagles; itā€™s wrong to sweep them up with so many in the Navy who simply turn their heads, pretend to not see the uglier side of the service. He knows the list extends to the Dagger Squad too, or at least he hopes so. Itā€™s support, though, that not everyone has. For Bob, it feels earned - not until he settled into his role as wizzo and worked with Duck enough to earn them enough credit and goodwill to get invited to Top Gun. He can admit that much of college was a lonely experience, at least where his budding Navy career was concerned, especially once he got his shit together and stopped drinking. A skinny, nerdy gay kid with a troublesome mouth only has so much appeal. Even in a place like MIT.Ā  It could have been worse, he knows, the rotc program at MIT had cultural cushions that Annapolis never would have. Annapolis would have terrorized him.Ā
Right as Bob is, it glosses over what Seresin means, anyway. Front-seater versus back-seater - itā€™s a fight heā€™ll lose every time with a man like Seresin, ego and pride overinflated like the large Academy ring he wears. Ego with no chance of deflating since Seresinā€™s read is correct - if asked, Nat will figure out how to accommodate him. Bob refuses to give Hangman the satisfaction. Nor does he want to disrupt Natā€™s fun any more than he already has.Ā
He watches Seresin unpack, silent, his turn to stare. If thereā€™s a solution to this, Bob doesnā€™t know what it is. Finding another bed is a non-starter just as the idea of sleeping on the floor makes his back ache, which leaves sharing - nope, also a no-go. His eyes catch on the console. Itā€™s a startling realization - their dynamic might have been described as friendship before he ruined it with a drunken kiss. It makes sense with Nat, Rooster, and Fanboy. Being Natā€™s wizzo lent itself to bonding, sheā€™s easy to talk to in a way he refuses to compare to his sister, but even that has a line theyā€™re still navigating. He canā€™t say heā€™s stayed at her place as long as he has Seresinā€™s. Nor can he account for why Hangman hasnā€™t ratted him out about his back - if not to command, then to Nat. Outside of the potential physical limitations of an injury, and perhaps more dangerous, is the mental strain, slower reaction times, and clouded thinking that could accompany it. He can insist heā€™s fine all he wants, but thereā€™s no denying the danger he put her in. Without her even knowing - doesnā€™t that contradict every drunken thing that fell out of his mouth that night?Ā
Maybe he should question Seresin seeking refuge in the bathroom, but Bob canā€™t overlook the small chance at privacy, lowering himself onto the edge of the bed with a sigh. He rubs his eyes. The decor, although far fancier, reminds him of his grandparentā€™s old ranch house in Montana, sold shortly after his sisterā€™s death. Sheā€™d love it here, the thought turning his sigh into a groan. He forces himself to push the thought away; everything is complicated enough as it is.Ā
Jake reappears and Bob wants to stay sitting, his only way to hide from the entire mess, but he forces himself to stand, to do this properly.Ā
ā€œI donā€™t know how I got home,ā€ he hedges, still wanting to hide behind the easy excuse being too drunk gives him. Itā€™s simple, but itā€™s also cowardly. And itā€™s cruel. Itā€™s awfully cruel to make Seresin doubt and question unnecessarily. Despite the smile and the southern charm, that Bob can tell is too sweet, underneath it all, Seresin seems nervous. Unsure. Concerned, the type of concern Bob doesnā€™t think can be so easily pinned on Seresinā€™s fixation on winning Natā€™s interest. He thinks of mint essential oils and salt air and the metallic taste of blood - Jakeā€™s touch.Ā
ā€œNo,ā€ Bob answers, meeting Seresinā€™s green eyes. ā€œNatasha doesnā€™t know. No one does.ā€ He owes Seresin honesty. And an apology, which in hindsight, he should have started with. ā€œI am sorry. For kissing you, for everything.ā€ Bob runs a hand through his hair, an attempt at dispelling his anxious energy. ā€œI was drunk.ā€ The clarification likely means nothing to Seresin, but it does to him - both as a reminder of why he sticks to water and an explanation that this is far outside of his norm. ā€œI wasnā€™t thinking.ā€Ā
All the carefulness Bob usually practices evaporated because he let himself get drunk. He put them both at risk. His sexuality might not be a secret, but he isnā€™t careless. He isnā€™t naive. Bob doesnā€™t hook up with pilots or maintainers heā€™d have a greater chance of overlapping with in flight or on the ground. He doesnā€™t flirt openly at the usual Navy haunts. There is always some distance - being out doesnā€™t mean being open; not everywhere, at least. ā€œNeither is an excuse - I still shouldnā€™t have kissed you.ā€
He licks his lip. ā€œLook - if you want me to go, I will.ā€ Heā€™ll take the fall; heā€™ll make up a believable excuse that keeps Seresin unscathed. Natā€™s questioning will be harder to dodge; she might see through it, but sheā€™ll keep it to herself till their out of the mountains. The teasing will be brutal, though surely not worse than Seresin pissed off at him. ā€œJust tell me what you want me to do.ā€ Fitting, he thinks, that the front-seater should call the shots.
šš€š“š€š’š‡š€ šŒš„šš“šˆšŽšš„šƒ š’šŽšŒš„š“š‡šˆšš† š€ššŽš”š“ š‡šˆšŒ š‡š€š•šˆšš† š“šŽ š“š€šŠš„ š–š‡š€š“š„š•š„š‘ š‘šŽšŽšŒ š–š€š’ š‹š„š…š“. it didn't bother him because she was right, he was a last minute addition to the group, as most would correctly assume that jake preferred lone wolf activities. coyote was the one who had a habit of inviting him into more group-oriented things, though jake couldn't pretend that the small town charm and mountainous background wasn't swiftly winning him over. anything that promised physical activity, adventure, and fresh air that didn't carry with it the continuous stench of a busy naval base was usually a good call for winding down in jake seresin's book. whilst the others were making plans for lunch and discussing going sight-seeing, jake's head was already filled with thoughts of going on an early morning hike to watch the SUNRISE. he thought nothing of javy's long and roguish smirk as his best friend dropped an old key into the palm of his hand. jake propped his luggage bag atop his shoulder with one hand, nodded, and made his way up the stairs and down the hall to his room.
the inn reminded him of old southern houses. it was very traditional with a wraparound porch that sparked his memories of being young and swinging from a porch swing back at the old seresin farmhouse. he was excited to see the elegant, period-style of his bedroom at the inn---- only FLOYD was standing in his way. a quick glance over his shoulder alerted that the others were following right behind of him like grinning and snickering little children. just to be an asshole, jake smiled back and slammed the door in their faces once it was just him and bob inside. well, fuck. ( they're almost more attracted to drama than he is. ) he's given barely any time at all to process his present circumstances before bob's grilling him with a, "you're taking the floor." like hell.
"does this beautiful face look like it sleeps on floors?" seresin arcs a brow, promptly dropping his bag on the foot of the bed to mark his territory. though he's shared two-man officer staterooms onboard aircraft carriers, what he does on deployment suddenly feels like paradise in comparison to being left alone with robert floyd right now. a moment goes by, and then another, of jake taking a little too long at staring at him. jake, unfortunately, notices that floyd hasn't replaced his glasses, making the color of floyd's eyes appear more prominent to jake than they ever have. ignoring the realization, he rips his bag open and starts unfolding work out clothes for tomorrow's hike.
"but feel free to whine and cry back to tasha 'till she gives up her own bed. i mean, she does everything else for ya. ain't that right?" it's gonna be a looooong night, and a long trip in general if bob thinks he can handle being stuck with an irritable, confused, and typically provocative jake seresin. jake just decided that, with time, he'll be able to SCARE floyd off and steal the room for himself. it's a matter of psychological warfare and he's the king of that shit.
or used to be.
his thumb skims the edge of his nintendo switch case, which then gets tossed on top of the bed with his other unpacked clothes. he just purchased the new tales of symphonia remastered version and a demon slayer game with pretty legit reviews. although, javy and him were supposed to have similar interests, somehow bob turned into the one hanging out at his place late to game until the sun came up. it was never clarified of being an official friendship---- not that seresin would have owned up to it out loud. even making up with bradshaw's annoying ass was a lot less detrimental to jake's image than being 'friends' with bob, because jake came out looking like a heroic figure at the end of that mission. bob was just someone who wandered into his daily life by sheer ACCIDENT.
"no one cares what happens to you."
"one good deed doesn't make a good man."
words that shouldn't have any impact on seresin were suddenly reaching for the chokehold around his neck. people have said A LOT of cruel shit about him in the past---- the higher-ups probably compared him to his father, too, and thought he was a selfish prick in the shadow of 'the great general'. it was assumed that men who fought for their country were inherently selfless; no one ever knew about the monster that jake had to live with back at home, when the combat was over. it's part of the reason why jake steered away from going infantry or special forces in the first place; he would've been good at it, just as he was good at everything that he set his mind to. killing wasn't even an issue for him, but the thought of turning into his father was a pure nightmare within itself. ...jake had to save his own skin, regardless of the fact that it looked like consistently abandoning people. a team, a friend, even a GOD can't protect you. jake knows and embraces this harsh reality, yet gets treated like the villain for it.
quietly, seresin retreats to the bathroom to splash cold water on his face. letting bob get to him was sinking to a new kinda low, and he should be over it after getting back at him during training. still, something feels terribly off for him: having to stomach that floyd's probably hated him all along even after jake's guard had been starting to lower around him. hating him right back should be easy enough. yet, there was something that mickey said earlier that got under his skin. he casually wipes his hands off with a towel as he steps back into the bedroom to go and confront bob.
this shouldn't be brought up, EVER, but jake's going to be careful about his wording along the way.
"you remember that night outside the karaoke bar?" he's not even going to say the word 'kiss'. "when you were drunk as hell, and i went lookin' for ya. i didn't see anyone else out there. ...you didn't go and say anything to natasha or the guys, didja?"
the question's asked more calm and smoothly than jake really feels. it takes a sincere effort to smile, though there's venom across those lips, in those sparkling teeth. all he knows is that he can't risk the TRUTH getting out. the more that people figure out about seresin, the more that they begin to see right through him. sure, other individuals just like him have achieved their ambitions and have made it up the great officer ladder. there was one gay admiral who also chose to come out when 'don't ask, don't tell' collapsed at last, but it was more so a control thing with seresin. he has to be better than everyone, and all he's been raised and taught about his sexuality was that it was one huge weakness.

2020 Life Olympics
The real Olympics may have been canceled in 2020 but the Life Olympics persevered like the postal service of Olympics.Ā
First, Iā€™d like to apologize for my role in the chaos of 2020 because I think I had a slight miscommunication with the powers that be and I feel partly responsible. Here was my plan for 2020:Ā
My theme for 2020 is Intention because I want to take the energy I feel right now and deploy it with more intentionality next year - bringing increased mindfulness to how I spend my time, money, physical and mental energy. And because I love wordplay, I also literally want to spend more time camping ā€œin-tentā€ to enjoy more peace and quiet and beauty in nature.
The universe was like, ā€œOh, she wants to spend less money and more time outside? Well, shut it down. Shut the whole planet down.ā€
Tumblr media
I mean, mission accomplished, I guess? I did spend less money and more time outside and had to be VERY intentional with my mental energy to survive the day-to-day morass of 2020. Next time, I will be more specific with my annual manifestations. Sorry to all.Ā
2020 was brutal for pretty much everything and everyone. I donā€™t know anyone who isnā€™t in some state of grief right now, including myself. I debated doing a Life Olympics at all this year, feeling like-- what is the point? Hundreds of thousands of people died, our democracy is hanging on by a thread, and millions of people lost jobs, businesses, and homes.Ā
Like many people, Iā€™ve been struggling with anxiety and depression this year which intensified as it got darker and colder outside. At a low point, I talked with my therapist about the struggle of just not wanting to do any of the things that usually bring me joy-- and how periods of relief were so fleeting.Ā ā€œBut you have to keep doing those things,ā€ she said,Ā ā€œeven if theyā€™re not working right now, you have to keep doing those things and trust the process; the joy willĀ return.ā€Ā
So even though I donā€™t really feel like it and kind of feel like itā€™s dumb, Iā€™m writing the 2020 Life Olympics. Iā€™m trusting the process.
2020 Life Olympics Recap
Work - Participation Trophy
Starting a company is hard, operating a company is harder, but running a company during a global pandemic and economic crisis is something I wouldnā€™t wish on my worst enemy. 2020 was not a fun year to lead a business; it was hell. On March 15, the plan for the year pretty much went out the window and everything went into survival mode. I never take the company or my team for granted, but Iā€™m particularly grateful to be able to usher this work into 2021.
Despite the craziness, we still had some big wins this year. We launched new productĀ partnershipsĀ with PowerSchool and Amazon Business. We rebuilt our tool for equitably calculating district funding formulas. And I got to flex my creative muscles with EdFinToks! Throughout it all, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by a team of people who are as compassionate as they are talented.Ā
Iā€™m worried about public educationĀ more than ever after this year, but Iā€™m going to keep fighting every day to make it work better for kids.Ā
This is Work-Lite but I also spent a good chunk of time this year leading the modernization workgroup for Bill Henryā€™s transition committee after his spring primary election to become the new Baltimore City Comptroller, ousting a 25-year incumbent, Joan Pratt. This was an enlightening (and infuriating) experience for me that gave me a glimpse into the operations of a segment of the City government. This process also really helped crystallize how much I enjoy making public agencies function more efficiently; Iā€™m excited to see what Bill does with the recommendations (some are already being put in action!)
Health - GoldĀ
This is the second year in a row (and ever) that Iā€™m giving myself a Gold medal for Health. This was easily a year that I could have regressed on all of my healthy habits and no one would have blamed me. Instead, I leaned into protecting and improving my physical and mental health in 2020. Itā€™s not an exaggeration to say that walking probably saved my life this year. I spent a lot of time walking around my neighborhood and various state and city parks-- walking is maybe not the best word; I stomp and charge around like I have a score to settle with the ground beneath me. My walking increased 370% in 2020. This is a habit of 2020 that Iā€™d like to keep. My brain and body are happier if I can spend a little time walking-- stomping-- around outside each day.Ā
Tumblr media
I also did a lot of biking this summer. My cycling increased 200% this year-- with much more time spent cycling outdoors. My crowning achievement this year was biking to and from Annapolis:
Tumblr media
I spent a LOT more time outside this year which was critical for my mental health. On the downside, I only did 90% as much yoga and 60% as much strength training, so I want to try to be a little more balanced next year.Ā
I also invested a lot in my mental health this year. I kept up with therapy every 2-4 weeks and in October I decided to pursue a formal diagnosis for ADHDĀ which I definitely have! Needless to say, staying in one place this year has been a special kind of hell for me.Ā
Home - Silver
Well, I definitely spent less money this year. And the way I did spend money made me (mostly) sad:Ā
Travel down 70%Ā
Auto & Transportation up 200% (boo cars)
Shopping down 60%
Personal Care down 35%Ā
Gifts and donations up 200%Ā
Food and Dining down 40%
Entertainment down 35% (I kept up my singing lessons virtually which accounts for a lot of this category)Ā
2020 was quite the palate cleanser from my 2019 year of hedonism but maybe we can go for a happy medium in 2021? Just kidding-- I will resume my hedonist ways the minute the world opens.Ā
I also redid my home office like every other work-from-homer on the planet and replaced my crumbling kitchen floor so the house got some TLC.Ā
But nobody enjoyed having me home all year as much as Darwin:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Relationships - Bronze
What a weird year for relationships of all kinds. Iā€™m giving this a Bronze because while I invested a lot into a few relationships this year, there are also a lot of people in my life to whom I havenā€™t been able to give my time and love.Ā
One of the most important relationships in my life this year was with one of my former students. After bouncing around in the foster system for many years, we reconnected around the holidays in 2019 and he started crashing with me while we tried to figure out stable housing and employment. He was arrested in January and was incarcerated for the next several months awaiting trial. Finally, we were able to negotiate a plea agreement with the Stateā€™s Attorney and he came home around Independence Day. We spent the next several months getting him set up with a phone and various identification documents-- a nightmare in normal times and a total abyss during the pandemic. I got him registered to vote when we got his ID card and I took him to vote for the first time (a supreme treat for this former social studies teacher):
Tumblr media
Heā€™s now got a full-time job and stable living situation. Calling this THE success of 2020. Thank you to everyone who helped me with resources all year for housing, legal processes, and documents. It takes a village.Ā
It was a bizarre year for family. We lost my grandmotherĀ in September, so not being able to spend the holidays together felt like an especially cruel loss. Other big losses this year include a trip to France to celebrate a milestone birthday for my mother and my brother and sister-in-lawā€™s wedding (Mosby seemed pretty ok with the alternative plan, though):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But in many ways, my family has been more together than ever this year thanks to prolific group chats and photo-sharing. Mostly, Iā€™m just glad everyone else is safe and healthy. As my father often reminds me,Ā ā€œOur problems are small.ā€Ā
And dating? What to do with this weird Jane-Austen-esque dating scene-- as if modern dating werenā€™t fraught enough. Is this the universe punishing me for ending my 2019 dating hiatus early?Ā I, for one, have given up. You win this one, pandemic. Iā€™m just going to have my little Twitter crush and call it a year. Next year, though...
Tumblr media
Horizons - SilverĀ GoldĀ
You know what? Itā€™s hard to expand your horizons without people or places.Ā
Tumblr media
I did the best I could. I finally got back on track with my Goodreads challenge and actually had a really good year of reading,Ā including finally embracing audiobooks through my Libro.fm subscriptions. I especially enjoyed Michelle Obamaā€™s book BecomingĀ and Mike Birbigliaā€™s The New OneĀ on audio-- both narrated by their authors.Ā
I camped in Pocomoke (MD), Western MD, Lake Michigan, and Ohiopyle (PA):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I explored over 30 new hiking/biking trails-- some favorites including the Youghiegheny River trail in PA, the NCR trail, Catoctin Mountain, the C&O Canal Towpath, Annapolis Rock, and of course, Stoney Run in my backyard.Ā
I left Facebook and started the Life Olympics newsletter. Iā€™ll be honest, I donā€™t miss Facebook but I also donā€™t understand where that energy, time, and brain space went. I was spending cumulativelyĀ hoursĀ a day mindlessly scrolling Facebook and I quit cold turkey and barely noticed-- what black hole of our brains does social media occupy? I kind of thought that with all that extra time I would write the next great American novel or something. Iā€™m probably spending a little more time on Twitter, which I could stand to cut back on. Other than that, I think I was just trying to process the shitstorm of this year. Maybe Iā€™ll write the next great American novel post-pandemic.Ā
For the first time in my life, I feel somewhatĀ ā€˜caught upā€™ on pop-culture. I finally watched Parks and Recreation (twice); I watched The Mandalorian andĀ finally actually watched Star Wars (episodes IV-IX); I watched the final seasons of The Good Place and Schittā€™s Creek; Iā€™m caught up on Insecure; I watched The Prom and Ma Raineyā€™s Black Bottom and Jingle Jangle; I even started Bridgerton. I know what everyone is talking about and Iā€™m catching so many more pop-culture references these days. (I guess instead of writing the next great American novel I watched Netflix?)
2020 Lessons
Iā€™ve spent plenty of time mourning the missed opportunities of 2020 and will probably always wonder what this year could have been in an alternate universe with a functioning government. But we only have this reality for now, and we made the best of it.Ā
I wanted to slow down in 2020, try to be more intentional, more mindful, and...
Tumblr media
No thank you! I liked the pace of my life; it makes my brain and heart happy. Iā€™m happiest when I wake up in a different city three days in a row. I like darting around every borough of Manhattan for nine meetings and three cocktails and then taking a red-eye to Europe. I want to run around to eight conferences for 18-hours a day for three weeks and then sleep for 22 hours. I miss overloading my brain so much that I need a deprivation chamber to sleep. This is who I am. This is how I like to live. And when I was locked down alone in the house for a year, slowing down, being mindful, I never once thought,Ā ā€œI should have... when I had the chance.ā€ Because I always did. And I always will.Ā
2021
We shake with joy, we shake with grief.
What a time they have, these two housed as they are in the same body.
Mary Oliver
Weā€™ve had enough grief. 2021 is going to be all about joy.
Universe,Ā let me be clear: this is not a euphemism or code or secret signal.
I want pure, unadulterated, abundant, joy. I want multi-course dinners in restaurants with lots of close friends and good wine. I want the virus so far gone that I can make-out with handsome strangers. I want a rollicking good time in France and/or Brazil and/or Prague and/or New Zealand and/or Bali. I want to spend the day after Christmas in NYC with my father. I want to be a glutton for theatre and art and music. I want celebrations and parties and sequins.Ā
I want to shake with joy.Ā

Naturalists comb Nova Scotia woods for birds in bid to halt loggers
BRIDGETOWN, N.S. -- Naturalists are listening and looking for migratory birds in a Nova Scotia forest today, part of an effort to halt logging in an area containing old hardwoods.
A sign went up this week from WestFor Management Inc. saying cutting would resume in an area between two pristine Annapolis Valley lakes known for canoe routes as early as Monday.
However, several bird watchers headed into the woods on Friday seeking to show the logging will disturb habitat for nesting migratory birds at a crucial time of year.
Wildlife biologist Bob Bancroft, a former provincial government employee, says he's called police and Environment Canada to ask them to enforce provisions of the Migratory Bird Convention Act, but he hasn't heard back about possible action.
Environment Canada didn't respond immediately with comment on whether this legislation would be considered applicable.
Lands and Forestry Minister Iain Rankin said in an interview Friday the tree-cutting has provincial approval, and his department isn't aware of any species at risk in the area.
The company was not immediately available for comment, but was working on a response today to a written list of questions.
Bancroft said he's heard ovenbirds calling from the forest floor, brown creepers singing their "cheerful-sounding song" while nesting under the tree bark, and a pileated woodpecker call and drum near the proposed cut.
The biologist said cottagers in the area are also on the lookout for the possibility that blanding turtles may be in the area.

An Elusive Peace, Chapter 8
[Read on AO3]
Rated: T
Summary: For Hamilton and Eliza, peace was supposed to mark the end to their separation and the beginning of domestic bliss. But Hamiltonā€™s ambition and the challenges facing the new nation quickly interfere. Happily ever after may not be as easy to attain as they once hoped.
Ben Franklin and the Constitutional Convention...
May-September 1787
ā€œDonā€™t do it,ā€ James McHenry muttered beside Hamilton, hardly moving his lips as he watched, attention rapt, on Washington, who stood on the other side of the room in all his stately dignity. Gouverneur Morris was striding towards the General, his cane and wooden leg thumping on the floor in a rhythmic one-two pattern. ā€œDonā€™t do it.ā€
ā€œHeā€™s going to do it,ā€ Hamilton whispered to his old friend, grinning and already starting to shake with laughter.
ā€œYouā€™re looking well, my dear General,ā€ Morris boomed. His hand landed firmly on Washingtonā€™s back in a companionable pat, then lingered.
ā€œOh my God.ā€ Mac placed his palm over his eyes.
Washington tensed visibly at the touch and slowly turned his head. Morris froze in place under Washingtonā€™s icy gaze. Slowly, he removed his hand from the Generalā€™s shoulder. With a nod and an uncomfortable smile, Morris slunk back across the room towards them.
Hamilton was laughing so hard he had to hold on to Macā€™s shoulders to keep himself upright. Morris glared at him as he approached. Trying to bring his great guffaws under control, Hamilton managed to comment, ā€œWell done, my good fellow.ā€
ā€œI thought for a moment there Iā€™d been turned to stone,ā€ Morris said. He chanced a fearful glance back towards Washington, who had resumed his careful observation of the fireplace. When Hamilton collapsed into Mac, overcome with laughter again, he added, ā€œIā€™m glad you found that amusing.ā€
ā€œI canā€™t believe you just did that,ā€ Mac said, still shaking his head.
ā€œI told you not to,ā€ Hamilton defended himself, still laughing. ā€œThe General hates being touched. And heā€™s not been feeling well. His sore head has been making him grouchy as a grizzly bear.ā€
Morrisā€™s eyes narrowed. ā€œYou didnā€™t mention the last part.ā€
ā€œDidnā€™t I?ā€
Morris shook his head once, decisively.
ā€œOops,ā€ Hamilton grinned.
ā€œYouā€™re the devil, Ham,ā€ Morris grumbled, stalking away towards another group.
ā€œColonel Hamilton,ā€ he heard Washington call from across the room. He looked, and saw Jemmy standing in front of the General. The two were looking at him expectantly.
He breathed out slowly to calm his mirth. Mac took a large step to the side, as though to distance himself from Hamilton and whatever trouble he may be in with their good old commander. Smirking at his friend, Hamilton excused himself and made his way towards the fireplace.
ā€œGood evening, sir,ā€ he greeted Washington with a sunny smile.
ā€œYou and Major McHenry seemed to be having a grand time,ā€ Washington observed. A fond twinkle glimmered in the Generalā€™s eye and the corner of his mouth twitched ever so slightly. Had Washington intuited his mischief, he wondered, and played along? Or was he simply glad to see Hamilton and Mac enjoying themselves?
ā€œI always enjoy a chance to socialize with my old companions,ā€ he answered. Turning his attention to his other friend, he inquired, ā€œHow are you, Jemmy?ā€
Jemmy tilted his head in a noncommittal gesture. ā€œGeneral Washington and I were just discussing the assembly tomorrow. Mr. Randolph has agreed to submit my plan for consideration. I wondered if you might be prevailed upon to speak after him?ā€
Although the assembly had achieved a quorum a week ago, no serious inroads had been made to improving their current constitution or developing a new one. He took heart that Jemmy finally felt ready to put forward the plan heā€™d developed in the months since the Annapolis convention. ā€œIā€™d be happy to do my part. What do you need?ā€
ā€œI read your speech from the New York Assembly where you tried to convince your colleagues of the importance of giving Congress the power to levy the five percent impost under consideration. You spoke very movingly about the need for a stronger union between the states. I hoped you might rework your comments for the gentleman now assembled.ā€
Jemmy wanted him to be the one to call for scrapping the Articles of Confederation, he understood. He sighed. With Lansing and Yates as his co-delegates, both hardened Clintonians, he had no leverage or influence over his own stateā€™s vote, but perhaps he could convince some of the other delegates of what needed to be done.
ā€œIt would be my honor.ā€
ā€œThank you, Mr. Hamilton,ā€ Jemmy nodded, with the same twitch of a smile that Washington favored.
A roar of laughter rose up from the next room. Hamilton craned his head around, looking for the cause of the sudden jocularity. ā€œThatā€™ll be Doctor Franklin,ā€ Washington commented behind him. ā€œHave you been introduced yet, Alex?ā€
The familiar name from the General made him furrow his brow. For all the Generalā€™s ill humor over the past few days, he seemed to be regarding Hamilton in a peculiarly fond manner. He pushed the thoughts aside; heā€™d learned long ago not to question Washingtonā€™s inconstant moods, and to simply enjoy any time spent in his good graces.
ā€œNot formally, sir. Weā€™ve never spoken outside the assembly.ā€
The great and famous Benjamin Franklin had arrived at the first session carried aloft in a chair by four convicts like some great old sultan from a distant empire. While Hamilton had seconded Franklinā€™s first motion, heā€™d not yet had the chance to interact more substantially with the venerable old man.
ā€œCome along, then. Heā€™ll be delighted to meet you,ā€ Washington said, touching his back lightly to urge him onward.
Hamiltonā€™s eye just happened to meet Morrisā€™s as Washington tapped his back, and he saw Morrisā€™s eyes widened in disbelief. He had to try to cover the sudden burst of laughter that resulted. ā€œExcuse me,ā€ he coughed, covering his mouth. Washingtonā€™s eyes were twinkling again when he looked back at him. The General was almost certainly in on the mischief, he thought, smiling.
ā€œMy dear General,ā€ Franklin called out as they entered the adjoining room. ā€œPlease, come join us. Has someone refreshed your glass?ā€ He waved a servant over, despite this being Mr. and Mrs. Binghamā€™s home. When you were world famous and revered, you could command any room you entered, Hamilton supposed.
ā€œThank you,ā€ Washington nodded to the servant. They moved close to the settee where Franklin was holding court, and one of the men gave up his seat for the General. Hamilton remained standing at his side. ā€œI donā€™t believe youā€™ve met Colonel Hamilton yet, Doctor Franklin.ā€
ā€œHamilton.ā€ Franklin frowned over his name, adjusting his glasses down his nose to peer at him. ā€œOh, yes. Hamilton. The hero of Yorktown, isnā€™t that right?ā€
He was about to demur when he heard Washington confirm, ā€œJust so.ā€
ā€œAh, see, my mind is still firm, even if this old body is starting to give way,ā€ Franklin jested, then tipped his head and raised his glass. ā€œA great honor, sir, to be included in such fine company as yours.ā€
ā€œI did only my duty, sir,ā€ he pleaded, feeling his cheeks warm under Franklin and Washingtonā€™s praise. ā€œBut I am beyond honored to make your acquaintance, Doctor Franklin.ā€
Franklin waved away the flattery like an annoying fly. ā€œWhere are you from, Colonel Hamilton?ā€
ā€œOriginally the West Indies, sir, but since the war Iā€™ve made New York my home.ā€
ā€œHeā€™s connected to the Schuyler family,ā€ Washington explained for him.
Franklinā€™s whole face lit up at the mention of the Schuylers. ā€œI passed some very enjoyable hours at General Schuylerā€™s home last time I was in Albany, perhaps a century or so ago.ā€ Hamilton laughed dutifully. ā€œWhat vivacious young daughters he had. So charming, and bright. Can you believe one of them beat at checkers? Miss Elizabeth, I believe it was. And she seemed so unassuming at first. God help the man who ends up married to her. Heā€™s in for a shock if he thinks heā€™s acquired himself a humble Dutch housewife, that much is certain.ā€
Hamilton grinned at the description of his wife. Eliza had told him the story of meeting Mr. Franklin when heā€™d stayed at the Pastures back before the war, and he was delighted to hear his darling Betsey had made such an impression on the man in return. ā€œI thank you for your well wishes, sir, though I assure you I was under no such illusion when I made my vows.ā€
Franklin raised his bushy brows. ā€œAh, so youā€™re the lucky fellow who caught that remarkable young lass. Congratulations.ā€
ā€œThank you, sir. Though I wouldnā€™t say I caught her. She bewitched me, body and soul. I had little choice but to go along.ā€
ā€œSounds about right,ā€ Franklin chuckled. ā€œWell, come, sit down, Colonel. Sit, sit.ā€ One of the gentleman near Franklin surrendered his seat so Hamilton could sit beside him, and a servant quickly hurried to place a glass in his hand.
ā€œNow, Colonel, what do you think of our most august assembly so far?ā€
**
Hamiltonā€™s knee bounced impatiently as the coach made its way down Wall Street. When his little townhouse at last came into view, he had to fight off the instinct to leap from the moving vehicle. He was desperate to get home.
It wasnā€™t just that the convention had taken a turn for unbearable, though it absolutely had. The cramped gray and green East Room, located upstairs in the State House, the very same that had witnessed the historic signing of the Declaration of Independence, had now been overrun by petty politics and sniping. Secrecy demanded the windows be closed, which left every delegate, to a man, sweating and ornery, and often more concerned with swatting flies than listening to the endless speeches.
He could feel the chance for strengthening the union slipping through their collectively sweaty palms.
At least there had been some hope of movement on the deadlock when heā€™d left. The delegates had entrenched themselves in support of either the Virginia plan, favored by the larger states, and the New Jersey plan, favored by the smaller. Jemmy, despairing of finding any solution, had approached him in mid-June for his opinion. Heā€™d answered honestly that he was not truly in sympathy with either camp.
ā€œWhat would you see done?ā€ Jemmy pressed.
ā€œIt wonā€™t be popular,ā€ Hamilton had cautioned. When Jemmy continued to press, heā€™d answered finally, ā€œWhat we need is as close an approximation of the British system as can be replicated on our soil. The British government is the best in the world and I doubt very much whether anything short of it will do in America.ā€*
ā€œYouā€™d wish us to install a monarch?ā€
ā€œMonarch is an indefinite term,ā€ heā€™d replied evasively, though heā€™d never balked at the idea as much as most of his countrymen.* For all the talk of tyranny that characterized the discourse of the revolution, it had been Parliament, not King George, with whom the colonists had first clashed. Had the king consented to allow them to form their own separate parliament, they never would have declared independence at all.
Madison had nodded distractedly, and Hamilton fancied he could see political calculations whirling behind his eyes. ā€œYou should speak,ā€ Jemmy suggested after a long pause.
ā€œWhat will be the point? I canā€™t even influence my own stateā€™s vote, and Iā€™m quite certain no one will agree with my opinion on the matter.ā€
ā€œNo,ā€ Jemmy agreed bluntly. ā€œThey wonā€™t. But to hear your plan makes Virginiaā€™s proposal sound moderate by comparison. If you speak honestly, very honestly, about your opinion, and emphasize how democratic Randolphā€™s proposal truly is, we may move some of the smaller states to make some concessions.ā€
ā€œEasy enough, for what even is the Virginia plan but democracy checked by democracy, or pork with a little change of the sauce?ā€*
ā€œThat,ā€ Jemmy declared excitedly. ā€œSay that.ā€
ā€œYouā€™re going to get me hanged as a Tory,ā€ Hamilton had smirked.
ā€œItā€™s a secret convention. No one outside that room will hear the details. Itā€™s our only chance to create a true union, Hamilton. Please.ā€
Heā€™d consented, and made the heretical speech Madison requested. Much like his speech in the New York assembly the year before, no one even bothered to debate him on the merits of his plan. But, encouragingly, heā€™d sensed the merest hint of a shift in the smaller states, a new willingness to at least discuss the Virginia plan.
Lansing and Yates must have sensed it two, for both men abandoned the convention with no intention of returning. Without at least two of the three delegates, New York no longer retained the power to vote in the convention. Now that both men had left the convention for good, he wondered just how long that speech of his would stay secret.
But no, it wasnā€™t just the interminable debates and miserable feeling of uselessness that had driven him home. Not even his court cases were the true cause, though thatā€™s what heā€™d told Jemmy when heā€™d kept needling him for the reason he was abandoning the convention in such a moment of crisis. ā€œSome of us have to work for a living,ā€ heā€™d snapped at his friend. ā€œI donā€™t have the luxury of abandoning my legal practice for months at a time.ā€
No, it was his wife. His darling, darling wife. He felt anxiety clench in his gut as he examined the townhouse for any indication of the distress within, hurrying to grab his bags from the coach.
Sheā€™d written to him that she been feeling unwell in early June, but that it was nothing serious. Heā€™d worried at that, but not unduly. Eliza possessed positively rude good health most of the time, but a sniffle now and then was to be expected, heā€™d tried to soothe himself. His reply to her had a perhaps fanciful request that she come join him in Philadelphia, for it felt impossible for him to submit to such a long separation from her and the children, whatever the expense or inconvenience it might necessitate for her to travel to his side.1
Only after heā€™d sent the letter did he truly come to grips with just how ridiculous the suggestion was. Heā€™d awaited her reply, expecting a teasing rebuke. Instead, after a long delay, heā€™d received an unusually short note where sheā€™d admitted she was feeling too unwell to travel such a long distance. He shouldnā€™t worry over her, though, but be sure to see to his own health. Was he resting properly? Eating regularly?
Thatā€™s when he knew he needed to leave.
Eliza was the most supportive, loving person heā€™d ever met in his life. He adored that part of her, her tender concern and her unwavering devotion. However, it did leave him concerned sometimes. She was the kind of person whoā€™d worry, with perfect sincerity, over his stubbed toe even as she slowly bled to death herself.
When he thrust open the front door and tossed his portmanteau down in the foyer, he could immediately hear his sweet little cherubs playing in the front parlor. ā€œYou sit here, Fanny,ā€ Angelica was instructing. Sheā€™d taken to the role of bossy big sister like a duck to water.
He peered into the parlor and observed the beautifully domestic scene heā€™d been lacking for the past two months. Pip had been freed from his lessons it seemed, because he was rocking merrily on the play horse that sat in the parlor when no company was expected. Angelica seemed to have organized a pretend tea party, because sheā€™d seated little Fanny down across from her and was now pushing an empty pewter cup across the floor. Fanny didnā€™t seem to mind the handling, and she sat placidly where sheā€™d been placed, sucking her thumb and cuddling the old cloth rabbit Pip had recently outgrown. Best of all, he saw Eliza with them, on her hands and knees behind the sofa, apparently fishing out a toy for baby Alex, who was toddling curiously by her side.
The sight of her up and about with the children eased the tight knot in his middle.
ā€œHi Papa,ā€ Pip greeted with a wave, though he didnā€™t stop his ride on the horse.
He waved back, smiling at his little boyā€™s enthusiasm. ā€œHello my little lambs.ā€ Stepping further in to the room, he added, ā€œAnd hello to you, my dearest angel. You had me very worried after your last letter.ā€
When Eliza scooted back to look at him, however, he found, to his shock, that it wasnā€™t actually Eliza at all.
ā€œWell, my darling,ā€ Peggy said with a teasing drawl as she looked up at him, ā€œI donā€™t quite remember writing to you, but I appreciate your concern.ā€
ā€œPeggy? Whereā€™s Eliza?ā€ he asked, frowning heavily.
ā€œUpstairs.ā€ Some of the amusement drained from Peggyā€™s face. ā€œSheā€™s been a touch under the weather. I came down to help look after the little ones so she could rest.ā€
He fled from the room and raced up the stairs two at a time. Heā€™d known something was wrong. Heā€™d felt it. He should have left sooner, after her first letter. She never admitted to illness lightly, not when she knew how he worried over her.
The bedroom was dim when he opened the door, with the curtains pulled over the windows to keep out the summer sunshine. His wife rested peacefully on their bed in her nightgown, the sheets mostly kicked aside, unnecessary in the heat of the afternoon. He approached quietly and sat gingerly on the bed.
She shifted a little, but didnā€™t wake.
He rested the back of his hand against her forehead, then her cheek, trying to test her temperature. She didnā€™t feel warm to the touch, but heā€™d have to go collect the thermometer to be sure. Sighing, he leaned down and touched his lips to her forehead.
ā€œBetsey?ā€ He touched his finger to her darling little button nose, which wrinkled slightly from the tickling sensation. ā€œBetsey?ā€
At last, her eyelids fluttered and she gave a long sigh. ā€œMm. Alexander?ā€
ā€œItā€™s me. Iā€™m home.ā€
She smiled softly, then frowned, and began to push herself up in bed. ā€œWhat are you doing here? Youā€™re supposed to be in Philadelphia.ā€
ā€œI needed to see you. Donā€™t sit up, my angel. You should rest.ā€
She rolled her eyes and finished arranging herself into a seated position. ā€œI told you not to worry. Iā€™m not that fragile, sweetheart.ā€
ā€œWhatā€™s wrong?ā€ he asked.
ā€œIā€™ve just been a little lightheaded, lately. I think itā€™s this terrible heat. Really nothing for you to rush home over,ā€ she scolded lightly again. ā€œYou worry too much.ā€
ā€œA rich accusation coming from you,ā€ he teased.
She laughed and shook her head stubbornly. ā€œNo. I worry the exact right amount.ā€
ā€œOh, do you?ā€
ā€œMm hm.ā€ Her smile was big enough that he could see her dimples.
He leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her soft lips. Her hand came up to cradle his cheek. ā€œIā€™ve missed you so much,ā€ he confessed when their lips parted.
ā€œIā€™ve missed you, too, sweetheart. I wish you didnā€™t travel all that way on my account, but Iā€™m very happy to have you home for a little while.ā€
He sighed and collapsed against her, so that his head rested on her chest, over her heart. The steady beat beneath his ear was perhaps the only sound in the world that could soothe the anxiety heā€™d been carrying all the way from Philadelphia. Her fingers stroked soothingly over his hair as she adjusted to hold him to her.
ā€œI donā€™t think Iā€™m going to go back,ā€ he admitted.
ā€œYouā€™ll go back.ā€ She spoke in a confident tone, as though sheā€™d peered into his future and seen exactly what was going to happen.
He shook his head against her. ā€œNo. Itā€™s awful, Betsey. They all snipe at each other like children. Worse, actually. Our children are better behaved. Itā€™s just men with outsized egos listening to themselves give speeches while everyone else ignores them.ā€
ā€œHave you given any of those speeches?ā€ she asked lightly.
He smirked, taking her point. ā€œI have. I gave a brilliant address that lasted six hours and would have cured all our nationā€™s ills. And I was the only one in the room who listened.ā€
ā€œAh,ā€ she chuckled. He felt the vibration roll through her chest, and clutched her closer. ā€œSurely it canā€™t be all bad.ā€
ā€œI did get to meet Doctor Franklin,ā€ he granted. ā€œHe remembered you, you know, from when he stayed with your family in Albany. He says you beat him at checkers.ā€
ā€œI did,ā€ she confirmed. ā€œSoundly, might I add.ā€
He curled closer to her, relishing in her solid weight beneath his arms. He couldnā€™t stand to leave her again. He couldnā€™t. ā€œI donā€™t want to go back.ā€
ā€œAll right, sweetheart,ā€ she soothed, rubbing his back tenderly and still stroking his hair. ā€œStay home with us for a little while. Weā€™ll see how you feel after youā€™ve had some rest and some time away from your frustrations.ā€
**
Eliza was right, of course.
He did go back. Not a week after heā€™d left, General Washington had written him of his continued despair at the proceedings, and added a simple appeal: ā€œI am sorry you went away. I wish you were back.ā€2 After seeing to his business and spending some much needed time with his wife and babes, he packed his bag and set off for Philadelphia once more.
When he returned, he found a great deal of progress had been made towards an actual agreement. The Connecticut Compromise, people were calling it. Hamilton collected the notes from Madisonā€™s room in the Indian Queen tavern and took them down to read the speeches heā€™d missed and catch up on the latest gossip.
ā€œWashington took us to task the other day,ā€ Morris reported with some amusement. ā€œApparently someoneā€™s been careless with their notes of the latest resolutions. He gave us a good talking to about taking care not to distress the public with our premature musings.ā€
ā€œWhose paper was it?ā€ Hamilton asked curiously, skimming over the notes of one of Madisonā€™s rebuttals.
ā€œNo oneā€™s claimed it. Itā€™s still sitting there on podium by Washingtonā€™s seat.ā€
Hamilton laughed, though he couldnā€™t say heā€™d be brave enough to risk Washingtonā€™s ire were they his notes at the front of the room. His eyes flicked up just long enough to see Mac, bright red in the cheeks, sinking down towards his ale. Their eyes met, and Mac shook his head desperately.
His poor, dear Mac.
On and on the debates went.
In early August, Hamilton felt his disgust with his fellow delegates growing daily as they began to debate the issue of slavery. Heā€™d have liked to see a provision for gradual abolition included, of course, but the vehement arguments from the slave-holding states made it clear that any such provision would end the whole debate. And then theyā€™d gone the extra step to demand their slaves be counted for representation.
ā€œThey treat the poor men like property!ā€ Morris railed, reiterating his speech from the floor that day. ā€œIf a slave be a man, treat him as such, and set him free and let him vote. But if they continue to treat their slaves as little better than cattle, then by God, they shouldnā€™t profit from his numbers in the federal legislature.ā€
Hamilton sighed glumly over his drink. Listening to the delegate from South Carolina debate Morris that afternoon had brought back dark specter of grief. Jack should have been the delegate for South Carolina, heā€™d thought, nearly glaring at the manā€”the imposterā€”as heā€™d spoken from his seat. Jack never would have stood and defended the appalling institution.
ā€œYouā€™ve been quiet,ā€ Morris observed after taking a long dram.
Hamilton shrugged.
ā€œYou donā€™t find it an outrage that theyā€™ll be able to count three fifths of their enslaved population? That the southā€™s representation and influence will be unjustly bloated by their inhumane institution?ā€
He found it an outrage that they had an enslaved population to count in the first place. But that was the sort of radical comment heā€™d only say to Jack and Lafayette. And though he took Morrisā€™s argument in the spirit in which it was offered, he couldnā€™t shake the distaste he felt at hearing the antislavery contingent of their delegation comparing enslaved men and women to livestock. ā€œTheyā€™re people,ā€ he said softly.
Morris frowned at him.
ā€œThatā€™s the difference, Morris. Theyā€™re people. I hate that counting them wonā€™t do a thing towards helping them, but they should count. Everyone should count.ā€3
Morris took another long drink. He didnā€™t raise his complaints again. At least, not in Hamiltonā€™s earshot. Ā
Heā€™d gone home again not long after, needing the comfort of his wife to help him push through the final days. Although Eliza had been better when heā€™d left, he was heartsick to find her ill again when he returned. It was even worse than before; she could barely hold food down. When heā€™d tried to talk to her about how worried he was, though, she only laughed.
ā€œThis time, itā€™s your fault, my love.ā€
Heā€™d frowned in confusion until sheā€™d placed his hand over her belly. His eyes widened as he touched her soft middle with a new reverence. ā€œAre you sure?ā€
Sheā€™d nodded. ā€œIā€™ve been in this state enough to know the signs.ā€ She studied his face for a long moment before asking, ā€œAre you happy?ā€
Heā€™d grinned at her. ā€œBetsey, I am so happy.ā€
The knowledge of that little life they were expecting had given him strength enough to return to Philadelphia for the last time. When the final agreements had been struck, he joined the committee of style and arrangement to help put the language in order. The document bore little resemblance to his ideal government, but it was infinitely better than their current Articles, and he vowed to do his best to see it implemented.
Though he couldnā€™t vote on behalf of New York, he voiced his own support when the final draft came to the floor for a vote, and willingly affixed his signature to the bottom of the page before leaving the East Room for the last time. The delegates all met for a farewell dinner at the City Tavern down the road, each man trying to drown the enormity of the task ahead by falling deep into their cups for the night. They were all committed now, whether they liked it or not.
A more perfect union, indeed.

At Least 8 Killed Following Flooding in New York City, Newark, New JerseyĀ
Authorities say at least eight people have died across New York City and New Jersey as a result of the historic flash flooding caused by the weather system formerly known as Hurricane Ida, which struck the northeastern United States just three days after devastating much of the southeastern state of Louisiana.Ā
The storm dumped so much rain in New York City that the local National Weather Service issued its first flash flood emergency for the iconic metropolis and the neighboring city of Newark, New Jersey. The service posted a record-setting 8 centimeters of rain in New Yorkā€™s famous Central Park in just one hour, and many streets were quickly turned into rivers, leaving cars and even commuter buses submerged.Ā
The lights of Times Square in New York are reflected in standing water, Sept 2, 2021, as Hurricane Ida left behind not just water on city streets but wind damage and severe flooding along the Eastern seaboard.
The cityā€™s subway system was so badly flooded that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority shut down all but one of its lines. Ā
More than 8 centimeters of rain was also recorded at Newarkā€™s Liberty International Airport, forcing officials to suspend all flight activity, and the air traffic control tower was temporarily evacuated due to a tornado warning. Parts of the airport were flooded, forcing officials to move passengers to higher floors. Governor Phil Murphy has issued a state of emergency for all of New Jersey.Ā
A motorist drives a car through a flooded expressway in Brooklyn, New York early on Sept. 2, 2021.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a state of emergency for the city, including a travel ban for all nonemergency vehicles until 5 a.m. local time, while New York state Governor Kathy Hochul issued a similar decree for the entire state.Ā
Flash flooding was also reported in the neighboring states of Pennsylvania, with reports of water rescues and evacuations from several small towns. Tornado warnings were issued for parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, while as many as 230,000 people were left without power in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.Ā
The storm system also struck parts of the nearby state of Maryland, where at least one person was killed and another person was missing after heavy rains flooded an apartment complex in the city of Rockville, located just outside of Washington, D.C. A tornado also struck a section of Annapolis, Marylandā€™s state capital.Ā
Ida has been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone after coming ashore Sunday as a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 240 kilometers an hour, making it one of the most powerful storms to ever strike the mainland United States. Ā
A man passes by a section of roof that was blown off of a building in the French Quarter by Hurricane Ida winds, Aug. 29, 2021, in New Orleans.
Electricity is slowly being restored to the tourist city of New Orleans after Ida damaged or destroyed eight electric transmission lines that provide power to the city and much of southern Louisiana. State authorities and regional utility company Entergy have said it could be as long as 30 days before power is fully restored, leaving residents without air conditioning to spare them from the areaā€™s searing late-summer heat, as well as food and running water. Residents across the region have been waiting in long lines for hours at gas stations to get the fuel needed to run the portable electric generators to provide some electricity for their homes.Ā
Both Governor John Bel Edwards and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell have urged residents who evacuated ahead of Idaā€™s arrival to stay away during the crisis. Ā
U.S. President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit Louisiana Friday to get a firsthand look at the damage. Ā
