“Looking into and eagle’s eye...it changes you” Mike told us quietly, his eyes trained to the north along a craggy ridge line. We sat in the blind silently, unmoving, necks craned and eyes scanning. It is a hard thing to describe I guessed and later felt. Our film Sky Migrations is an attempt to share some of that feeling, the sense of awe and wonder and wild that these birds carry as they traverse thousands of miles over multiple hemispheres and a diversity of landscapes on their ancient migration path. Historically what we humans feel and how these birds affect us was inconsequential. That has changed though. With human sprawl introducing new threats to wild habitat and the ecosystems where raptors thrive, our feelings towards these creatures, our interactions with and connection to them matter more than ever. We need new stewards, we need young folks on the front lines, and we need people to care. The Hawkwatch banding sites are a way to gather data and help track the health of raptor populations over time, but they are also sites that are open to the public to visit and get a brief introduction to these birds - not just as specks in the sky or distractions out the corner of your eye, but as wild powerful apex predators that rely on huge swaths of wilderness to continue to thrive. Sky Migrations. Every fall, as the warmth of summer fades and winter’s cold edge presses into the north country, a river of raptors flows south, from Alaska all the way to the southern tip of Argentina. Sky Migrations // “Looking into an eagle’s eye...it changes you.” // The making of this film began, as most good ones often do, with no funding and no plan, just an idea (thanks @wasatchandy @charles_post) a truck full of camera gear, caffeinated beverages, and three smelly humans with copious amounts of psyche and a love for storytelling and conservation. Those three humans were myself, @max.lowe and @charles_post. Over the course of ten days we followed the migration path, from Nevada down to New Mexico (covering around 1000 miles - a small part of these animal’s journey) laughing too hard at our own jokes, sleeping on the side of the road, learning, learning, learning,marinating in tepid hot springs, talking long and hard about how to engage young folks in meaningful stewardship, and inadvertently becoming mildly obsessed with raptors along the way. By the end of the trip we had each experienced first hand what @floatingfeather had described to us that first day. Looking into am eagle’s eye is both terrifying, mesmerizing, and life changing// Sky Migrations is our attempt to share some of that with you - you can catch it on tour with @banffmountainfestival and @wildandscenicfilmfestival and/or visit the @hawkwatch crew at one of their mountaintop research stations along the western migration corridor.
