Tiger Shark
Part 2: The Sea
Chapter 7
The next morning, we discover a cave in the hill that the dam is built into. It turns out the hills are not as fertile as I had thought—instead they are quite rocky, with just enough topsoil to grow the knee-high grass that covers so much of the arena.
We move our camp into the cave. I pick through our fishing kit to give us the best possible gear combination while Mako cuts a pair of long, slim branches out of one of the trees. Within a few minutes, we have a pair of perfectly usable fishing poles and are sitting with our backs to the dam, spears within easy reach, fishing in the lake and watching the rest of the arena for any sign of action.
We have no immediate luck fishing. Eventually, I get bored. Taking a spear, I wander around the little tree patch, finding a few bushes that I am confident are blackberries. Just beyond the trees and into the grass are signs of some sort of large hooved animals, but the creatures themselves are nowhere to be seen.
I decide to try to climb the dam, more out of curiosity than anything, but there are no handholds on its face, and it is built seamlessly into the hill, which I had thought would at least mean I could walk up the hill. After a few steps though, it grows too steep. The hillside is smooth and covered still in knee-high grass. There is nothing to hold on to, nowhere to gain traction. I try stabbing my spear into the ground to steady myself, but it hits rock only a few inches deep—not enough to hold strong when I put my weight on it. Finally, panting and sweating, I give up. I head back to camp to find Mako managed to catch one single fish.
“I think we need bait, not just lures,” he says, holding up the small fish.
“There are some blackberries in the trees. Not sure if they would work, but it’s worth a try.”
Mako cleans the fish while I find a rock with a sharp edge and scratch the numbers one through twelve in a row on a wall in the cave. I scratch an X under 1, 3, and 6, and then two under 5.
“Hey,” Mako calls, “Were you any good at the fire-starting station? I was terrible, but I don’t want to eat raw trout.”
I wouldn’t say I was good at building fires, but I was passable. The real problem, though, is not going to be my ability to build a good fire, but to find something dry enough to burn. The grass is green and the trees are green. I point this out to Mako.
He furrows his brow. “Grass would dry out fast if we cut it, but it won’t burn long enough to cook anything. And tree branches will take days to dry. You didn’t notice anything on your walk?”
“No, I didn’t notice any nice piles of chopped firewood just waiting for us, but there might have been some sticks laying around. I wasn’t really paying attention for those.”
We head into the trees to check, and thankfully we find enough small sticks on the ground to build a fire just big enough to cook the fish. I build a fire while Mako cuts a swath of grass and piles it just inside the cave to dry. Then he goes into the trees and gathers as many sticks as he can find while I roast the fish.
We are eating a supper of trout and blackberries when the cannon sounds. In the distance, a hovercraft descends to the tops of the trees, hangs for a moment, then flies away. Just before the sun goes down, the cannon booms again, but in the twilight I cannot make out where the hovercraft goes to pick up the body.
We decide to let the fire burn itself out and I volunteer to take the first watch, but we wait for the anthem to play before going back to the cave. Neither of us wants to miss seeing who has died. The fire is nearly out by the time the pictures appear in the sky. The girls from Twelve and Eight.
I hand Mako the sharp rock and he scratches an X in the top row of 8 and 12. He retreats farther into the cave. I stay just inside the entrance, hidden in the shadows, where I can watch everything. I wrap the blanket around my shoulders and put on the night-vision glasses.
~~~ ~~~ ~~~
After a few hours, I hear something moving on the other side of the tree patch. I close my fingers around my spear, ready to fight, but then I see them. They approach the river to drink just a few yards down from where we fished and ate supper. They are not tributes, but cattle. Except, they are not cattle like the pictures I have seen. They are taller, with massive, round shoulders and necks that are so thick there is little distinction between shoulder and head.
I watch them for a long time, smiling at these oddly graceful, incredibly ugly things. I am about to stand up to wake Mako to trade shifts when I see them. A pair of shadows slinking through the trees. These are tributes. But they are not looking for me. They seem quite focused on the monstrous cattle. After a little while, the pair splits up, one going upstream toward the dam and the other moving silently downstream, working cautiously around the hulking animals. Several minutes pass, then a bird calls from somewhere. The cattle pay it no mind, but the tribute closer to me does something inexplicable: they bark.
The cattle bolt right at the last place I saw the second tribute. I ready myself for a cannon, but what happens instead I am not sure. The cattle rumble away, following the river for a little while, then curving out into the open plain, but in the midst of their flight, one of them staggers and drops heavily to the ground. The second tribute had been lying in wait for one of the creatures to run close by, then killed it somehow. I can see from the flash of metal that they have a sword, but whether it was a stab or a slit throat I have no way of knowing.
The two tributes begin quietly talking. I listen for a few minutes, but can’t make out their words. I creep into the back of the cave and wake Mako by putting a hand over his mouth.
He jerks awake, but calms when I whisper, “Just me. Another pair just killed a big cow outside, but they haven’t noticed us.” I hope we did a good enough job hiding the fish guts and the evidence of our fire.
Mako nods, slips out of the sleeping bag, and takes the blanket, spear, and night-vision glasses. I slide into the sleeping bag. It is still warm. I hadn’t noticed how cold it has become until now that I am suddenly warm. I pull the top of the sleeping bag up to my nose and drift off to sleep.
~~~ ~~~ ~~~
I wake the next morning to the delicious smell of roasting meat. Remembering our enemies close at hand, I slither out of the sleeping bag as silently as possible and creep to the front of the cave, sitting down next to Mako.
Mere steps away from where we made our fire last night, the two tributes from Ten have built a sizable fire and are roasting several chunks of meat on a spit, frying others on flat stones, and boiling a pot of something. Laying where it fell last night is the neatly butchered carcass of the strange cow creature.
Mako and I watch them for several minutes. We are now stuck in our cave. There is no way we could get out without them seeing us, which is fine until what is left of our beef jerky and raisins run out.
I open my mouth to suggest to Mako that we just go kill them and get it over with.
“C’mon, we know y’all’re around here somewhere!” the boy calls.
Mako and I glance at each other but say nothing.
“We want to thank you for the coals. Never could’a gotten the fire goin’ without ’em! the girl says.
“We’ll even share the buffalo, if you’re interested. In exchange for helpin’ us get rid’a some’a the others!”
I glance at Mako and the look on his face tells me that we are thinking the same thing: it wouldn’t hurt to have allies, especially these two, who trapped, killed, and butchered whatever this thing is all by themselves. We nod at each other, stand, and leave the cave.
“Here we are,” I say, holding my hands out to the side, though not putting down my spear.
“Told ya it was Four,” the girl says.
“Yeah yeah. I was right about the buffalo though,” the boy responds.
They are each holding a sword, but make no aggressive moves. Mako and I approach slowly.
“We’re serious about that alliance,” the girl says. “We’ve got a plan, but it’s gonna take more’n the two of us.”
“Who’s the target?” Mako says.
“Cornucopia, a’course,” the boy says. “That’s the only way one’a us poor districts can win.”
“See, we know how to hunt ’n’ find edible plants, but the Careers’re sunk without the food at the cornucopia. If we can get rid’a all those supplies, or even most of ’em, it puts us on an even playin’ field.” Judging by her eager tone, the girl really is serious about an alliance.
“’N’ if we can get rid’a the Careers—or anyone else—while we’re at it, that’d be great.” The boy turns the spit.
“Does that include us?” I say cautiously.
“Like I say, our plan needs more’n two. We don’t want a permanent alliance any more’n you do, but if we work together, just for a day or two, we can thin the herd. It’ll be mutually beneficial. We’re willin’ to share the buffalo, work together to kill whoever we can, ’n’ then go our separate ways. We’ll even let y’all have your fishing spot back ’n’ we’ll camp somewhere else.” The girl stands, putting her sword down. “Whaddya think?”
“I think there’s no way to know you won’t kill us anyway,” Mako says.
“True, but you ain’t the biggest threat. The Career pack’s my top priority. Imagine you’re us. Why would we kill you, the most dangerous tributes who ain't hangin’ in the Career pack, when we could team up to get rid’a them first? Without your help, we don’t stand a chance ’f it comes to a fight.”
“Because you stand a better chance against us, two on two,” I say. Do they not teach math in Ten?
“Yeah, but neither of us is good with a distance weapon. The Careers have a decent bow, at least one of ’em knows how to throw knives, ’n’ they have Seven ’n’ Nine with ’em, so that’s two good with axes ’n’-”
“Wait, wait. You promised us the Career pack, not half the field. That’s the six deadliest people, and the boy from Nine, in the arena!” Mako stares at them.
“’Cept you two,” the boy says. “I saw ya at the bloodbath. With our plan ’n’ your skill, we can at least take out their supplies ’n’ a few of them ’n’ then get out before anything bad happens to us. We don’t wanna get in a knock-down drag-out.”
“What is your plan?” I ask, concerned they’ve only alluded to it so far, never giving any detail whatsoever. Then again, if I were them, I wouldn’t reveal my plan—especially if I were as confident in it as they are—until I knew Mako and I wanted in.
The girl, still standing, extends her hand toward us. “I’m Elsie, ’n’ this is Merritt, ’n’ if y’all’d like to join us for a breakfast of buffalo steak ’n’ some sort’a eggs, we’d be happy to explain.”

Dragon Ball GT 51
✨GT Stands For Gull Tactics✨
✨Positivity Page✨
Normally, I have a hard time coming up with something for GT to stand for with each episode, but this one has an embarrassment of riches. Gyre Turbulence, Girl Tornado, Gross Tentacle, Guzzling Tequila, Grabbing Trout... I can’t lose. So props to Episode 51 for satisfying a dumb bit I came up with 26 years after the show went off the air.
✨"Good" "Ideas", Poorly Executed✨
So it’s finally time for YOUR favorite Shadow Dragon. The people have spoken, and it’s Oceanus Shenron, also known as “Princess” and “the one that looks like a chick.”
In fact, Oceanus looks a lot like a slimmed down version of Haze, but he uses spinning powers to cast an illusion. This leads to the big issue I have with the episode’s plot, and Oceanus’ character. Let me back up and explain the setup to this.
So Giru has tracked the next Dragon Ball to a quaint fishing village, but he runs out of power before he can pinpoint its exact location. Before anyone can act on this, fish start dropping from the sky. Pan flips the fuck out and screams for like... a full minute? It felt like it anyway. Pan, you’ve been to space and you’ve seen your grandfather nude. Your parents got possessed by alien eggs and they tried to murder you. It’s just fish. Calm down.
Everyone in town rushes out to gather up the fish in wheelbarrows so they can make a quick profit selling them in town. But one local kid, Bish, isn’t so happy about the situation. Ever since “The Princess” started dumping free fish onto the village, the fishermen have stopped doing any work, and now they just drink all day and wait for more fish to fall from the sky.
Bish’s dad, however, disagrees with his son’s assessment. His counterargument: “Shaddup, you blasphemous ingrate, or I’ll throw my hip flask at you.” From what we see of Bish’s father, I’m pretty sure he’d be a surly drunk with or without this whole “free fish” deal.
Anyway, he throws the flask at Bish, and Goku catches it in his teeth because he won’t stand for child abuse. You can bring your grandkids along on dangerous martial arts adventures, sure, but don’t throw shit at ‘em. That’s where Goku draws the line.
Bish explains the whole bit to Pan while Goku cooks fish and then gives his frying pan to Giru. Aw, this is kind of nice. Everyone’s just chillin’ out, havin’ a fishfry. I’m not sure why Pan is so bummed out, but Bish is worried because he doesn’t know who Princess is or where she came from, but he doesn’t like what she’s done to his village, and also the seagull population has been terrorized lately. Bish has tended to their injuries, but they all hide inside a drydocked boat, because they’re too frightened to go out to sea.
Bish thinks there’s a connection, and he’s right. As soon as Giru recharges, he locates the Dragon Ball, and it’s on the forehead of the village’s Princess, who flies into dump more fish on them. Goku and Pan recognize her as a Shadow Dragon, and it’s clear that this is just part of their “destroy the world” agenda.
Here’s my question: How long has Oceanus been at this? I say this because the Shadow Dragons only came to be back in Episode 48, and Goku and Pan have been tracking them down ever since. They found Haze very quickly, and it seemed like they immediately went looking for Rage and found him without much delay. So I just assumed that Episodes 48-51 all take place in the same afternoon. Actually, if the entire Shadow Dragons Saga is just a single day, that wouldn’t surprise me at all.
And yet, everything about Oceanus implies a long con. Each Shadow Dragon seems to have picked out a “home base”, where they go to work ruining things. I almost get the sense that they’re competing with each other. Haze threatened to expand his territory until it covered the whole world, which would make it a paradise for himself. Rage claimed to have stolen the whole world’s electricity. Their individual goals don’t seem to mesh well, so I wonder if this is some deal where they’re all out to destroy the Earth, but only one of them gets to do it. And this is all some weird contest to see who gets to pull the trigger. By that logic, Oceanus seems to be doing her own thing her own way, but it feels like she’s been at it for a lot longer than the others.
Like, okay, the disguise is a neat bit. I just like her “Princess” design a lot better than her true form. I wish the other Dragons had similarly diverse looks to them. But why does Oceanus need a disguise at all? Apparently she’s been giving free fish to the villagers for a while now. They’re so used to it at this point that they call her a goddess and have given up working for a living. She warns Goku that no one has ever seen her true form and lived to tell about it, which is a cool line, but not for a villain who’s only a few hours old. Who else has seen her true form?
The premise for this story suggests that she’s been at this thing for weeks, or even longer, but that just doesn’t add up. Maybe Goku and Pan stopped at a Holiday Inn between Episode 50 and 51. So at most, Oceanus has been operating in Bish’s village for a full day. And yet the whole town has already gotten accustomed to her routine. It doesn’t add up.
And what’s the point of this whole charade? This is her only appearance, so she dies before we can find out her plan, but it seems like it would take forever to pull off. I mean, I guess her plan involves corrupting the village’s fishermen and damaging the local ecology, but wouldn’t it make more sense to just... I don’t know... use her wind powers to break stuff? That’s what the other dragons are up to. Haze was making land uninhabitable, Rage was forcing people to abandon cities, and when we get to Naturon we’ll find him digging tunnels and wrecking cities in the process.
Oceanus’ strange tactics might be explained by a quirky personality, which brings me to the Underwear Wish that created her. The Dragon Ball Wiki has a lot of words devoted to trying to connect each Shadow Dragon to the wish that birthed them, and while I respect the effort, it’s a lot of reaching. Someone might suggest that Oceanus uses the Princess disguise because Oolong’s wish was so frivolous and pervy. And maybe her weird plan is supposed to be tied to the nature of the wish. Like Ooong only asked for panties in order to stop Pilaf from wishing for world domination, so maybe that has something to do with it. There are people who spend a lot of time trying to connect these dots, but it just doesn’t make sense.
For example, Haze Shenron originated from the wish to revive Bora. What does any of that have to do with pollution? What does the wish to revive Goku have to do with electric slime? Nothing. These were just trivial matters that Toei slapped together. There is no underlying explanation for Oceanus Shenron. Someone wanted to write a morality tale about a fishing village corrupted by a false goddess, and so one of the Shadow Dragons was tailored to suit the role. It didn’t matter that the Shadow Dragons were only a few hours old, or that this one came from a wish for panties. It all just got slapped together.
✨Is This Episode Worse than "The Roaming Lake"?✨
All right, so how is the fight? Well, it’s a step up from Haze and Rage, but that’s not saying much.
Goku gets his clothes shredded by her initial attack, but Pan has a spare dogi in her backpack, so they’re back in business. Then Goku figures out that Oceanus just spins a lot, so he starts spinning too, and then they slam into each other really hard. It’s very dumb, but at least they’re hitting each other.
Oceanus still gets the upper hand, though, and manages to keep Goku pinned down. He just can’t get past the wind she creates. It blocks all his attacks, even the Kamehameha. You’d think Goku would try transforming to even the playing field, but maybe Rage Shenron spooked him out of that.
Anyway, all hope seems lost until the seagull Bish was carrying suddenly flies out of his hands and divebombs Oceanus from above. It can’t do a whole lot to her, but it does manage to get through her defenses, which gives Pan an idea. She flies directly over Oceanus and fires a Kamehameha straight down on her head. It’s like how there’s no wind in the eye of a hurricane. Oceanus is defenseless from that angle.
They make a lot out of this Kamehameha, like it’s Pan’s first, but I’m pretty sure she’s used it before in GT. This is the first time she’s used it to win a battle..... or it would have been, except Goku fires his own Kamehameha at Oceanus to finish her off. I don’t know if Pan’s was just meant as a diversion, or if the writers decided that Goku had to be involved in the finish because of Kozo Morishita’s rule against Pan actually getting to win fights or do anything cool.
The main point I want to make here is that none of this would be possible without the seagull literally showing our heroes where to shoot. As with the last two Shadow Dragons, Goku and Pan just sort of screw around the whole time, wondering why their attacks aren’t working, and then something else comes along to save them, like the underground spring Giru found, or the raincloud over Rage’s city, or this seagull.
After the fight, the fishermen thank Goku and Pan for showing them the error of their ways, and all the seagulls come out of that one boat. But they don’t have the budget for animating a flock of seagulls, so they use a bunch of still images instead. Hey, maybe don’t write stuff into the episode if you know you’re not going to be able to animate it.
Bish asks Pan to teach him how to fly next time, and Pan responds by inviting him to Mt. Paozu for lessons. Well that’s a brush-off if I’ve ever seen one. Why should he schlep all the way out to Mt. Paozu, Pan? You’re the one who can fly!
Then the episode ends with this shot of the four remaining Shadow Dragons. This is the first time we’ve seen them since the arc started. Episodes 48 and 49 had some shots of Rage and Oceanus, but the rest weren’t shown, which leads me to wonder if they hadn’t finalized their designs until this point. But that’s a problem for later.
Anyway, this episode is a lot better than the two that came before it, but that isn’t saying much. I’m still annoyed with the way they used a seagull to expose Oceanus’ weakness. Also, it’s kind of dumb that Oceanus’ weakness is just “attack from overhead”. Imagine if you could defeat Frieza that easily. But you can’t figure that out on your own, you need a seagull to demonstrate first.

"Autumnal", by Ray Harvey
Summer dies, the long days wane away. The heat in the sky melts like lead to liquid pools. The hills beyond are as white as clay. Now creep in the gentle autumn ghouls, Trailing behind their silken shawls of Lethe- an mist. Shadows warp, gourds enlarge. And now what is always there but not Quite clear — that blot lurking on the vision’s marge — Emerges with the year: unresting death, The slow blood sloshing with every breath Upon the bone-carved door. The senses clot.
Blue, blue days, windy days. The brittle clack of Leaves and their soft collisions in the dust. Dusty smells, leaf-fractured streets, the trees above Hissing thinly, like a pit of snakes. Must It all be quite so beautiful yet so hard to bear? This softly killing air with its furnace blast Of fume, its whispered currents of decay, Must it seep into my bones? Must it come so fast? One by one the rib cages of the leaves tear From their stems like wax. Big trees go bare. The glare Is great, extinction certain. Life won’t let life stay.
Now the morning grass lies flat, blanched and cold with frost. The sickles swing in the apple trees Whose limbs are stiff and leak like ink across The voided sky. A chopper fleet of bees Sack the throat of the friendly hollyhocks. They sweetly sway, but at what cost? At what cost are These people-sized flowers born? Why bloom At all? To what end? There at the field’s far Edge, where scarecrows spill their guts and the pale shocks Of corn glow white, the thud of fruit sounds like rocks On the hardened earth, and a goat coughs in the gloom.
The hunt sweeps out. Stag are bled, hung from their hocks In the boughs: throat-gashed, reeking, with antlers chipped, Disgorging chunked gallons into the groin-high stalks Where late the grasshoppers arced and flipped. Sweetly sour fall, with all your puffball that glow Like alien skulls in the lemon-lime glades, Glades choked with moss and mold. Yeasty earth, rains Distilling punky tea as color fades And hoof prints are raised intaglio On the forest floor. Across the ground below, Vapor hangs above the stubble plains.
And scuffed-up apples, so convex And so supple, come raining down with muted Clops. The cottonwoods are spending gold. Complex Odors — woodsmoke, crushed grass, denuded Bark — cast a pall. The sun is warm, the water cold, Streams die quiet in their empty beds. Stout-chested robins with their wind-mussed Hair, like shabby Halloween décor, jerk their heads, Leer. Last gnats everywhere ignite gold In the long last rays of the sun. Old Flies fall off. The summer moths have turned to dust.
We live a little while, a little while And we die. Our wings are mutable. This blown- Up shadow of me, hinged across a pile Of bone-white rocks, and once so small, is now grown Tall and unclear, in danger (I fear) Of slipping into nothingness. It’s slouched And leaning toward the extreme sea wall. The eternal surf is booming. Insects crouched On wobbly knees stare into the sere And melon vault. And do they, too, sense an ending near, Or care? Like me, both love and hate this lovely fall?
The year grows old. A wan crepuscular light. Time now for thought, time for bloody autumnal wine. Time for walking into the complicated night Beneath molten skies and moaning trees that line Like sentries the heaved-up, humpbacked, clicking walks. Pretty warts of lichen are tattooed all about. The squash exudes an oily musk. Gaudy gourds Bloat fast, tubers weird and curved like trout Beside these utterly lifeless rocks. Among a murder of crows, one groks From the deathless firs, and crickets strum their chords.
Is this my soul, then, expiring whitely Into the unanimous dusk? The clouds beyond Look similar. Harvest moon is lifting lightly Within — gorged and pocked, a lobeshaped flaxen-blond Or a skull of ice, soaring up new at the dying Edge of day, while simultaneously streaks Of a burgundy-and-purple sunset slaughter Bloom like flowers over the western peaks. Snows to come will come soundless, hushing the crying World. Full season’s here. The geese are flying Like arrows across the icy water.

GloPoWriMo 8.2: Don-Wah-Wah-Wahhhn
We boarded on a Greyhound headed south
He unto me his love undying pledged
And took me out to see the bay’s great mouth
The estuary at the world’s edge
Ever faithful and ever devout
He lay there on a hill upon the sedge
Though honestly that’s not quite how it went
The driver kindly told us to get bent.
So by the bay we next a steed did buy
A Corvette stallion for the lady love
“My goodness what a dashing prince”, said I
“You see what others set then rise above
Why I do believe I might now start to cry”
So dashing was his the valiant way he strove
He then let out a ceremonious belch
And made some armpit noises with a squelch.
So what, he wasn’t the Don Juan I craved
But still we ventured down Route 50 more
Because I almost drowned and then he saved
Me, thus, the man I do adore
What noble way he fought the beast and braved
The tides, the monsters lurking far from shore.
Though then the Coast Guard had to fish him out
He got it socked to him by rainbow trout.
With island hopping gusto he did rise
To seize with me the treasures of that bay
In brilliance below the crystal skies
With him upon my side I dared to stray
Such manifold delights as now defies
My explanation, he had such a way!
Though these detours were heavily dictated
By wine, and that man’s thirst was never sated.
At Easton-town sweet landfall did we make
The fair shore to my sea-tossed eye a boon
The lunch there was of such a brilliant make
Oh reader, you cannot picture that swoon!
I then knew that that this man was no rake
‘Twas then I knew I had to wed, and soon!
(Well, maybe I’m being just a little cliche
After all, it was just really good Chipotle)
I spoke to him of iron-hot desire
Now short of breath he said but one word: “Whoa”
With flames of love I saw him then perspire
What beauty would his words unto me bestow?
Such eloquence as such would then aspire
All gods in Heav’n and Hades far below.
He opened up his mouth and said “Uh, what, Rox?”
& hit a road sign as he scratched his buttocks.
As we waited for the carriage to repair
He lovingly and gently let me down
He said, “Well love, you should be aware
I’ve got another babe in Ocean Town”
I play the field, hey, what’s wrong, you can share!
Her name’s Melina, wow, she gets around
Just then a limo pulled up and demanded
He go- and then? That asshole let me stranded!
Such ruin! What a fiend! A pox on he
Who whispered nought but satin-covered lies
What undue malice! What base treachery!
To treat me as his love and then despise
Me for another and then leave me be
In some field in Queen Anne’s among the flies.
Though, asshat, think I’m gonna soon be seein’ ya
Cuz, sucks for you, I’m besties with Melina.
So go on coward, toss what salt you wish!
You better knock on wood, you sniv’ling wretch
On Ocean City Boardwalk there’s a bitch
Who has your number, you can writhe and retch
But never get past her revengeful dish
We’ll take it long and slow, you cad, no presh
And when hook's caught, we’ll use your ears as bookends
You really thought you’d cheat with my old girlfriend?

The Types of Fishing Rods to Use for a Particular Fishing Activity
Choosing the proper fishing rod is one of the most important, yet often overlooked by a lot of anglers, both beginners and experienced, factors in having success out on the water. Being able to place your bait in a precise location, without spooking any fish, can have a huge impact on whether or not you are getting bites. Use the wrong rod and you might not be able to cast as far or accurately as possible. Use the right rod and you can land a cast on a dime and work your bait the way it was intended, which will also produce you more bites, catches, and fun.
As you might probably know, there are different types of fishing rods for sale in the market. These fishing rods have different functions from each other, even though their main use is to catch fish. But with so many types of fishing to catch various fish species, you need a rod that can accommodate those activities. Some of the common fishing rods available are:
Spinning rods
Spinning rods are the most common type of rod found in the hands of fishos of all skill levels. A spinning reel is fitted underneath the rod making it a very versatile rod and reel combo suitable for lure casting and bait fishing. Depending on the weight class of your setup, a spinning rod can be used to target a wide range of small to medium-sized fish species from the shore, and they are well suited to small boats such as the Stabicraft Explorer boat or kayak or dinghy.
boat and kayak fishing.
Baitcasting rods
Baitcasting rods are a great alternative to spinning rods, as they’re quite versatile, but recommended for the more experienced fishos. Amateurs can very quickly be turned off by a baitcasting rod and reel combo because, without the proper handling, they are prone to tangling on the spool. But for an experienced angler, they offer even greater accuracy when casting and more control when handling a fish.
Overhead rods
Overhead rods are the classic boat fishing rod. They are engineered to work in perfect unison with an overhead reel and are usually slightly shorter and more powerful than casting rods. They’re made for fighting big species of deep-sea fish and sportfish. So, when you’re out in the ocean in your Seacruiser boat looking for game fish, just drop your line and wait for the bites to come.
Surf rods
Surf rods, as the name suggests, are designed specifically to suit surf fishing (but they’re ideal for fishing off rocks as well). The longest of the rod family, surf rods can be up to 4-5 metres long and are used from the shore to cast extremely long distances past the breaking waves to where the fish like to feed. Surf rods are usually used with big eggbeater reels to tackle big fish and cope with the added weight when pulling your catch in through the waves. To transport them easily, surf rods can be broken down into multiple pieces.
Fly rods
Fly rods are specifically designed for use with a fly reel when fly fishing. Fly fishing is very different to other traditional forms of fishing. It’s often compared to hunting, where stealth, patience and a whole bunch of skills are needed to cast a fly to mimic what the species is feeding on.
Fly rods are not just geared up for trout fishing in mountain streams and freshwater lakes; rods, reels, and lines are abundant, and flies to suit fishing everything from bass to bream, barra and beyond. If you're interested in learning more about fly fishing, we've got some great tips for beginners.
Kids rods
The first thing to consider when choosing a fishing rod for a child is the size. If the rod is too big for your kids to handle, they’ll become frustrated and may lose interest. While target species and fishing environment should still factor into your decision, an all-rounder rod, or rod and reel combo, (such as a light, spinning rod and reel combo) is usually a good choice when buying for kids; after all, it will probably need to be replaced with a larger model as your child grows.

What Is The Environmental Importance Of Rainbow Trout For Sale?
Rainbow trout's original range is from America to Russia, but they have been imported to many nations, including the United Kingdom. Chinook are blue gill that spends part of their life at sea, whereas sea trout are brown trout that go to sea (or sewin or peel or many other local names).
Rainbow Trout for Sale (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are not endemic to the United Kingdom; the brown trout is Cove River Ranch sole native fish (Salmo trutta). Rainbow trout's original range is from America to Russia, but they have been imported to many nations, including the United Kingdom. They are also commonly cultivated as a table fish as well as to stock lakes and rivers as a sport fish.
Brown and rainbow trout can migrate to sea and then return to spawn in freshwater. Chinook are blue gill that spends part of their life at sea, whereas sea trout are brown trout that go to sea (or sewin or peel or many other local names). However, both species have a variety of life histories that involve their migrating within streams, between reservoirs and lakes, and between freshwater, brackish, and salt water.
Importance of rainbow trout
Rainbow trout feed similarly for brown trout, mostly on crustaceans found on or underneath the surface of a lake or a river. Their principal food source is river flies, which are augmented by ground organisms or other fish.
Their life cycles are likewise quite similar, with the exception that rainbow trout reproduce in the spring in the wild, whilst brown trout reproduce in the late fall or winter. Spawning periods vary greatly and are affected by water temperature; they can hatch as early as January in warm locations like Texas and as later as June in cooler areas. They often spawn when water temperatures rise.
Despite efforts to generate vast quantities of juvenile zebra fish in hatcheries to offset the effect of enormous dams that prohibit both zebra fish and Pacific salmon from accessing their breeding areas, steelhead populations have declined significantly. Fisherman and aquatic biologists are increasingly worried that hatcheries have harmed the "fitness" of wild salmon and creek to live in the wild and that dam removal has stopped wild fish from spontaneously re-colonizing.
Guideline from the Rainbow Trout for sale
Because of increasing customer awareness campaigns, wild rainbow trout exports remain popular.
Frozen items are quickly gaining appeal, aided by rising worldwide commerce and culinary preferences.
Because of the availability of bigger wild stocks and a solid supply chain architecture, the United States will remain a prominent market for rainbow trout goods.
With governmental subsidies for feasible fisheries sites being located in northern states, India is developing as a regional industry with strong development potential.

Grå frede flue
The Grey Frede/Grå frede is a truly simple pattern that is one of the Danish favorites for sea trout. This short bodied pattern is again in the popular sea trout colour, GREY! The original uses only grizzle marabou and grizzle hackle but because I hunt birds I have this wonderful material, that I use here, is black grouse marabou for the tail and head. This type of highly mobile marabou is…

November 7, 2017 Winter Already Here??? Wow, we had quite the weather around western WA this past week with snow falling and temps in the high 20′s and wind blowing...completely uncharacteristic of this area for this time of year. Fortunately things are warming a bit so don’t hang up the fly fishing equipment just yet, there is great fishing to still be had so let’s get to it! First and foremost Puget Sound is fishing so well right now. I know most think of this fishery when it is nice and sunny out but actually this is our favorite time to fish here. Few anglers and fish that don’t have any idea how miserable you are standing there trying to catch them. Surface flies and baitfish patterns with a few polychaete thrown in work great right now. We use mostly floating lines and seem to do just fine so just our opinion but if that is all you have, no reason unless you want to to go buy a new line. Don’t get us wrong, we have new ones waiting for you like the Airflo Beach line (which is coming in full intermediate in January) and Rio Outbound Short if you are itching for one, happy to set you up! Fish 1x-3x tippet at about a 7 1/2 to 8ft leader. Turns over flies better in the wind, leaves fewer flies on the beach behind you and even fewer in the fish when you get too excited on the hook set. Yakima and Cle Elum are in full BWO mode right now and we have been loving the micro spey rods from everyone lately, swinging emergers across and taking both the rainbows and cutts on the swing...yes, the swing. Adult and emergers in 18-22 are working great, slow down and work the obvious water, you will find more success this way than trying to cover miles of river with our shortened daylight. Rather funny when you think about all the talk out there about the dead drift of both a dries and nymphs but very few discuss how incredibly well a swung fly represents the emergence of these insects. Give it a shot, next time your fly comes tight at the end of the drift, let it swing towards shore... Steelhead season is so close we can taste it. For those who like swinging flies, if it wasn’t obvious, this is all we do so if looking to book for the Olympic Peninsula this year, do so soon as we book up pretty early, especially for weekends. Call and set up your trip now for the Hoh, Queets, Sol Duc and Bogachiel. We will also be on the Skagit in January so book now! 206-708-7250

Razkiel vs. Etzel: Learning to Swim Edition
Razkiel: Glides through the water as smoothly as he flies, calm, completely in his element, dives down deep to hunt for sea serpents and trout, and is completely unperturbed by the eldritch monstrosities writhing in the icy abyss
Etzel: Screaming, certain he was dying even as he executes a perfect doggy paddle, vows to destroy every water body on the planet, and there’s a frog laughing at him until it catches Raz’s eye and pisses itself in fear
